Abstract: Positron annihilation spectroscopy was applied to study relaxed P-doped n-type layers with Ge concentrations up to 30%. As-grown SiGe layers were defect-free and annihilations are superpositions from bulk Si and Ge. Proton irradiation at 2MeV energy with a fluence was used to produce saturated positron trapping in monovacancy related defects. The defects were identified as V–P pairs, the E-center. The distribution of Si and Ge atoms surrounding the E-center is the same as in the host lattice. The vacancy migration process leading to the formation of V–P pairs therefore does not seem to have a preference for either Si or Ge atoms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Positron annihilation spectroscopy has been used to study GaN grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on misoriented 4H-SiC substrates. Two kinds of vacancy defects are observed: Ga vacancies and larger vacancy clusters in all the studied layers. In addition to vacancies, positrons annihilate at shallow traps that are likely to be dislocations. The results show that the vacancy concentration increases and the shallow positron trap concentration decreases with the increasing substrate misorientation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Positron annihilation spectroscopy is used to study vacancy defects in GaN grown by molecular-beam epitaxy due to different polar directions and varying stoichiometry conditions during oxygen doping. We show that Ga-polar material is free of compensating Ga vacancies up to [O]=1018 cm-3 in Ga stable growth, but high concentrations of VGa are formed in N-stable conditions. We also show that vacancy clusters are formed in N-polar material grown in Ga stable conditions, which may be related to the higher reactivity of the N-polar surface. The increasing global demand for food will be met chiefly by increased intensification of production. For crops, this will be achieved largely by increased yields per area with a smaller contribution from an increased number of crops grown in a seasonal cycle. Production systems show a spectrum of intensification practices characterised by varying methods of site preparation and pest control, and inputs of germplasm, nutrients and water. This paper highlights three main types of intensification (based largely on the quantity and efficiency of use of external inputs) and examines both the on- and off-site environmental consequences of each for soils, water quantity and quality, and climate forcing and regional climate change. The use of low amounts of external inputs is generally regarded as being the most environmentally-benign although this advantage over systems with higher inputs may disappear if the consequences are expressed per unit of product rather than per unit area. The adverse effects of production systems with high external inputs, especially losses of nutrients from fertilisers and manures to water courses and contributions of gases to climate forcing, have been quantified. Future intensification, including the use of improved germplasm via genetic modification, will seek to increase the efficiency of use of added inputs while minimising adverse effects on the environment. However, reducing the loss of nutrients from fertilisers and manures, and increasing the efficiency of water utilisation in crop production, remain considerable challenges. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The total ozone reduction in the Arctic during the winters of 1993/94 and 1994/95 has been evaluated using the ground-based total ozone measurements of five SAOZ spectrometers distributed in the Arctic and from number density profiles of a balloon-borne version of the instrument. The ozone change resulting from transport has been removed using a 3D Chemistry Transport Model (CTM) run without chemistry. A cumulative total ozone depletion at the end of winter in March of 18% +/- 4% in 1994 and of 32% +/- 4% in 1995 was observed within the polar vortex, and of 15% +/- 4% in both years outside the vortex. This evaluation is not sensitive to the vertical transport in the model. The periods, locations and altitudes at which ozone loss occurred were tightly connected to temperatures lower than NAT condensation temperature.The maximum loss was observed at 50 hPa in 1994 and lower, 60-80 hPa, in 1995. Half of the depletion in 1994 and three quarters in 1995 occurred during the early winter, showing that a late final warming isnot a prerequisite for large ozone destruction in the northern hemisphere. The timing, the geographical location and the altitude of the ozone losses are well captured by the 3D CTM photochemical model using current chemistry, but its amplitude at low sun during the early winter, is underestimated. The model simulations also capture the earlyseason reductions observed outside the vortex. This suggests that the losses occurred in situ in the early winter, when low temperatures are frequent, and not later in March, when ozone is most reduced inside the vortex, which would be the case if leakage from the vortex wasthe cause of the depletion.
