Abstract

We present timing solutions for four pulsars discovered in the Green Bank Northern Celestial Cap (GBNCC) survey. All four pulsars are isolated with spin periods between 0.26$\,$s and 1.84$\,$s. PSR J0038$-$2501 has a 0.26$\,$s period and a period derivative of ${7.6} \times {10}^{-19}\,{\rm s\,s}^{-1}$, which is unusually low for isolated pulsars with similar periods. This low period derivative may be simply an extreme value for an isolated pulsar or it could indicate an unusual evolution path for PSR J0038$-$2501, such as a disrupted recycled pulsar (DRP) from a binary system or an orphaned central compact object (CCO). Correcting the observed spin-down rate for the Shklovskii effect suggests that this pulsar may have an unusually low space velocity, which is consistent with expectations for DRPs. There is no X-ray emission detected from PSR J0038$-$2501 in an archival swift observation, which suggests that it is not a young orphaned CCO. The high dispersion measure of PSR J1949+3426 suggests a distance of 12.3$\,$kpc. This distance indicates that PSR J1949+3426 is among the most distant 7% of Galactic field pulsars, and is one of the most luminous pulsars., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We provide timing solutions for 45 radio pulsars discovered by the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. These pulsars were found in the Green Bank North Celestial Cap pulsar survey, an all-GBT-sky survey being carried out at a frequency of 350 MHz. We include pulsar timing data from the Green Bank Telescope and Low Frequency Array. Our sample includes five fully recycled millisecond pulsars (MSPs, three of which are in a binary system), a new relativistic double neutron star system, an intermediate mass binary pulsar, a mode-changing pulsar, a 138-ms pulsar with a very low magnetic field, and several nulling pulsars. We have measured two post-Keplerian parameters and thus the masses of both objects in the double neutron star system. We also report a tentative companion mass measurement via Shapiro delay in a binary MSP. Two of the MSPs can be timed with high precision and have been included in pulsar timing arrays being used to search for low-frequency gravitational waves, while a third MSP is a member of the black widow class of binaries. Proper motion is measurable in five pulsars and we provide an estimate of their space velocity. We report on an optical counterpart to a new black widow system and provide constraints on the optical counterparts to other binary MSPs. We also present a preliminary analysis of nulling pulsars in our sample. Abstract

The paper presents the concept of transformer diagnostic based on complementary methods with two measurements related to different physical phenomena. Two separate approaches are described. The first one allow the assessment of moisture content, ageing level and sludge presence in paper-oil insulation with joint measurement employing Return Voltage Measurement (RVM) and Polarization Depolarization Currents (PDC) methods. The second approach uses complementary measurements with Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) and Vibroacoustic Method (VM) to assess mechanical condition of an active part. Such approaches allow to perform more reliable and exact diagnostics. The results obtained in each pair of methods analyzed together show additional processes, which are impossible to detect with a single method. The paper describes basics of all four methods and gives directions for combined assessment. There are also some examples given of measurements from real cases.

Abstract

We describe an ongoing search for pulsars and dispersed pulses of radio emission, such as those from rotating radio transients (RRATs) and fast radio bursts (FRBs), at 350 MHz using the Green Bank Telescope. With the Green Bank Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument, we record 100 MHz of bandwidth divided into 4,096 channels every 81.92 $\mu s$. Abstract

In this paper, we present a novel artificial intelligence (AI) program that identifies pulsars from recent surveys using image pattern recognition with deep neural nets---the PICS (Pulsar Image-based Classification System) AI. The AI mimics human experts and distinguishes pulsars from noise and interferences by looking for patterns from candidate. The information from each pulsar candidate is synthesized in four diagnostic plots, which consist of up to thousands pixel of image data. The AI takes these data from each candidate as its input and uses thousands of such candidates to train its ~9000 neurons. Different from other pulsar selection programs which use pre-designed patterns, the PICS AI teaches itself the salient features of different pulsars from a set of human-labeled candidates through machine learning. The deep neural networks in this AI system grant it superior ability in recognizing various types of pulsars as well as their harmonic signals. The trained AI's performance has been validated with a large set of candidates different from the training set. In this completely independent test, PICS ranked 264 out of 277 pulsar-related candidates, including all 56 previously known pulsars, to the top 961 (1%) of 90008 test candidates, missing only 13 harmonics. The first non-pulsar candidate appears at rank 187, following 45 pulsars and 141 harmonics. In other words, 100% of the pulsars were ranked in the top 1% of all candidates, while 80% were ranked higher than any noise or interference. The performance of this system can be improved over time as more training data are accumulated. Abstract

Modern radio pulsar surveys produce a large volume of prospective candidates, the majority of which are polluted by human-created radio frequency interference or other forms of noise. Typically, large numbers of candidates need to be visually inspected in order to determine if they are real pulsars. This process can be labor intensive. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm called PEACE (Pulsar Evaluation Algorithm for Candidate Extraction) which improves the efficiency of identifying pulsar signals. The algorithm ranks the candidates based on a score function. Unlike popular machine-learning based algorithms, no prior training data sets are required. This algorithm has been applied to data from several large-scale radio pulsar surveys. Using the human-based ranking results generated by students in the Arecibo Remote Command enter programme, the statistical performance of PEACE was evaluated. It was found that PEACE ranked 68% of the student-identified pulsars within the top 0.17% of sorted candidates, 95% within the top 0.34%, and 100% within the top 3.7%. This clearly demonstrates that PEACE significantly increases the pulsar identification rate by a factor of about 50 to 1000. Abstract

Signals from the developing mammalian blastocyst rescue the corpus luteum (CL) and modulate the uterine environment in preparation for implantation and early pregnancy. Our previous studies demonstrated that both short- and long-term administration of chorionic gonadotropin (CG) markedly alters the morphology and the biochemical activity of the receptive endometrium. Because the effects of CG were superimposed on a progesterone-primed endometrium, this study was undertaken to determine if the inhibition of progesterone action by progesterone receptor antagonists (PRa) in intact and ovariectomized baboons would alter the action of CG on the endometrium at the time of uterine receptivity. In the short-term hCG-treated baboons, the PRa reduced the epithelial plaque reaction, completely inhibited alpha-smooth muscle actin (alphaSMA) expression in stromal fibroblasts, and induced the reappearance of the progesterone (PR) and estrogen (ERalpha) receptors in epithelial cells. However, this treatment protocol had no effect on the expression of glycodelin in the glandular epithelium. In contrast, glycodelin expression in addition to alphaSMA was suppressed in the ovariectomized animals. In the long-term hCG-treated baboons, the PRa had a similar effect on both alphaSMA, PR, and ER. In addition, this treatment also resulted in an inhibition of glycodelin expression in the glandular epithelium. These results indicate that blocking the action of progesterone on the endometrium even for a short period of time has a profound effect on the hCG-induced response in stromal fibroblasts. In contrast, for the diminution of glandular epithelial function in the presence of an ovary requires prolonged inhibition of progesterone action, suggesting a potential paracrine effect on the endometrium from the CL in response to hCG.

Abstract

We present timing solutions for four pulsars discovered in the Green Bank Northern Celestial Cap survey. All four pulsars are isolated with spin periods between 0.26 and 1.84 s. PSR J0038−2501 has a 0.26 s period and a period derivative of 7.6 × 10−19 s s−1, which is unusually low for isolated pulsars with similar periods. This low period derivative may be simply an extreme value for an isolated pulsar or it could indicate an unusual evolution path for PSR J0038−2501, such as a disrupted recycled pulsar from a binary system or an orphaned central compact object (CCO). Correcting the observed spin-down rate for the Shklovskii effect suggests that this pulsar may have an unusually low space velocity, which is consistent with expectations for DRPs. There is no X-ray emission detected from PSR J0038−2501 in an archival Swift observation, which suggests that it is not a young orphaned CCO. The high dispersion measure of PSR J1949+3426 suggests a distance of 12.3 kpc. This distance indicates that PSR J1949+3426 is among the most distant 7% of Galactic field pulsars, and is one of the most luminous pulsars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present timing solutions for 10 pulsars discovered in 350 MHz searches with the Green Bank Telescope. Nine of these were discovered in the Green Bank Northern Celestial Cap survey and one was discovered by students in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory program during an analysis of drift-scan data. Following the discovery and confirmation with the Green Bank Telescope, timing has yielded phase-connected solutions with high-precision measurements of rotational and astrometric parameters. Eight of the pulsars are slow and isolated, including PSR J0930−2301, a pulsar with a nulling fraction lower limit of ∼30% and a nulling timescale of seconds to minutes. This pulsar also shows evidence of mode changing. The remaining two pulsars have undergone recycling, accreting material from binary companions, resulting in higher spin frequencies. PSR J0557−2948 is an isolated, 44 ms pulsar that has been partially recycled and is likely a former member of a binary system that was disrupted by a second supernova. The paucity of such so-called “disrupted binary pulsars” (DRPs) compared to double neutron star (DNS) binaries can be used to test current evolutionary scenarios, especially the kicks imparted on the neutron stars in the second supernova. There is some evidence that DRPs have larger space velocities, which could explain their small numbers. PSR J1806+2819 is a 15 ms pulsar in a 44-day orbit with a low-mass white dwarf companion. 13. Fusing Expert Knowledge with Monitoring Data for Condition Assessment of Railway Welds.

Abstract

Monitoring information can facilitate the condition assessment of railway infrastructure, via delivery of data that is informative on condition. A primary instance of such data is found in Axle Box Accelerations (ABAs), which track the dynamic vehicle/track interaction. Such sensors have been installed on specialized monitoring trains, as well as on in-service On-Board Monitoring (OBM) vehicles across Europe, enabling a continuous assessment of railway track condition. However, ABA measurements come with uncertainties that stem from noise corrupt data and the non-linear rail-wheel contact dynamics, as well as variations in environmental and operational conditions. These uncertainties pose a challenge for the condition assessment of rail welds through existing assessment tools. In this work, we use expert feedback as a complementary information source, which allows the narrowing down of these uncertainties, and, ultimately, refines assessment. Over the past year, with the support of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), we have assembled a database of expert evaluations on the condition of rail weld samples that have been diagnosed as critical via ABA monitoring. In this work, we fuse features derived from the ABA data with expert feedback, in order to refine defection of faulty (defect) welds. Three models are employed to this end; Binary Classification and Random Forest (RF) models, as well as a Bayesian Logistic Regression (BLR) scheme. The RF and BLR models proved superior to the Binary Classification model, while the BLR model further delivered a probability of prediction, quantifying the confidence we might attribute to the assigned labels. We explain that the classification task necessarily suffers high uncertainty, which is a result of faulty ground truth labels, and explain the value of continuously tracking the weld condition.

Abstract

Standard angiography demonstrates the anatomy of arterial occlusive disease but does not define its physiological significance. However, measurement of flow in a compromised vessel at rest and following peripheral dilatation provides important physiological information. Using digital subtraction angiography, femoral arterial flows determined by the cross-correlation transit time technique were compared to measurements by electromagnetic flowmeter. Thirty-five femoral arterial flow measurements were obtained in nine dogs instrumented with an electromagnetic flow probe and balloon occluder. Renografin 76 (7 cc) was power-injected at 14 cc/sec into the distal abdominal aorta. Angiographic flow measurements correlated well with electromagnetic flowmeter measurements (r = 0.94, standard deviation of the difference (SDD) = 15 ml/min). Intravenous studies provided somewhat poorer correlation due to difficulties in defining dimensions (r = 0.72, SDD = 36). Paired contrast injections (2 injections in succession) in 11 studies increased flow from an average of 80 to 250 ml/min (a 210 +/- 100% increase), providing an estimate of a vessel's capacity to provide increased flow during peripheral dilatation. Thus, reliable angiographic flow determinations may be obtained by arterial and intravenous contrast injections, adding physiological information to anatomical definition.
