1. Use of high-pressure processing and low-temperature storage to extend the performance shelf life of 2 types of string cheese

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The manufacturing method of string cheese is similar to mozzarella, but the hot curd is extruded through narrow tubes or pipes, which align the protein fibers that provide the characteristic ability for consumers to pull strings from this cheese. Firmness is another important performance attribute for consumers who just bite into the string cheese without peeling off strings. There have only been a few studies on string cheese, but it is known that stringiness and firmness decrease during prolonged storage, which is a particular challenge for exporting string cheese. We explored 2 treatments to try to retain the stringiness and firmness of string cheese for longer storage periods. The techniques used were high-pressure processing (HPP; 600 MPa for 3 min) and reduced storage temperature (0°C). In other cheese varieties, these techniques have helped extend the performance shelf life. We tested these techniques using the 2 main types of commercial string cheese: direct acid string cheese (DASC) and cultured string cheese (CSC), which were obtained from 2 different manufacturing facilities. The DASC had higher fat (∼2.2%) and higher pH values (∼0.2 units) compared with the CSC. The CSC had higher protein content (∼3.4%), higher insoluble calcium content (∼8 mg insoluble Ca/g protein) and higher texture profile analysis (TPA) hardness values (∼4 N) compared with the DASC. Due to the compositional differences, the 2 varieties were statistically analyzed separately for all other attributes. In both cheese types, HPP caused an immediate reduction in stringiness, some solubilization of insoluble calcium, and a slight increase in the cheese pH values. High-pressure processing also caused a slight increase in TPA hardness of the CSC samples until 14 d (possibly due to a slight increase in cheese pH). The use of the 0°C storage temperature reduced proteolysis and helped retain firmness during storage. Low-temperature storage could help extend the performance shelf life of string cheese by a couple of months, but HPP was not suitable, as the process caused an immediate reduction in stringiness due to the disruption of the matrix induced by the HPP treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Local infiltration of knee joint in arthroplasty, provide postoperative analgesia and preserves motor power of quadriceps, which helps in early mobilisation, as compared to femoral nerve block which paralyses vastus medialis. Aim: To compare the quality of postoperative analgesia provided by femoral nerve block and local infiltration in unilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 60 patients (25-65 years) of ASA I and II, which were randomly(using random number table) divided into two groups – Group 1-femoral nerve block (FNB) and Group 2-Local Infiltration Analgesia (LIA). Abstract

In the traditional machining world, the drilling process has an important contribution to chip removal. The most important goals of drilling are low-cost and high-quality drilling. Drilling is a serious problem in precision engineering and mass production, so it needs great attention in manufacturing. Burr formation between inlet and outlet, surface roughness and corresponding maximum material rate. It plays an important role in quality during operation. The experiment was designed by Taguchi L27 orthogonal array. The focus of this study is to minimize the response when entering process parameters cutting speeds 0f 8, 16 and 24 m/min, feed 0.04, 0.12 and 0.2 mm/rev, point angles 118, 126 and 134 degrees. So study suggests that the lip angle is 8 degrees, 10 degrees and 12 degrees, and the diameter is constant at 10 mm, optimized by VIKOR approach.

11. Functionality of process cheese made from Cheddar cheese with various rennet levels and high-pressure processing treatments

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Due to its versatility and shelf stability, process cheese is gaining interest in many developing countries. The main structural component (base) of most processed cheese formulations is young Cheddar cheese that has high levels of intact casein. Exporting natural Cheddar cheese base from the United States to distant overseas markets would require the aging process to be slowed or reduced. As Cheddar cheese ripens, the original structure is broken down by proteolysis and solubilization of insoluble calcium phosphate. We explored the effect of varying rennet levels (we also used a less proteolytic rennet) and application of high-pressure processing (HPP) to Cheddar cheese, as we hoped these treatments might limit proteolysis and concomitant loss of intact casein. To try to retain high levels of insoluble Ca, all experimental cheeses were made with a high-draining pH and from concentrated milk. To compare our intact casein results with current practices, we manufactured a Cheddar cheese that was prepared according to typical industry methods (i.e., use of unconcentrated milk, calf chymosin [higher levels], and low draining pH value [∼6.2]). All experimental cheeses were made from ultrafiltered milk with protein and casein contents of ∼5.15% and 4.30%, respectively. Three (low) rennet levels were used: control (38 international milk clotting units/mL of rennet per 250 kg of milk), and 25% and 50% reduced from this level. All experimental cheeses had similar moisture contents (∼37%) and total Ca levels. Four days after cheese was made, half of the experimental samples from each vat underwent HPP at 600 MPa for 3 min. Cheddar cheese functionality was monitored during aging for 240 d at 4°C. Cheddar cheese base was used to prepare process cheese after aging for 14, 60, 120, 180, and 240 d. Loss tangent (LT) values of cheese during heating were measured by small strain oscillatory rheology. Intact casein levels were measured using the Kjeldahl method. Acid or base titrations were used to determine the buffering capacity and insoluble Ca levels as a percentage of total Ca. The LTmax values (an index of meltability) in process cheese increased with aging for all the cheese bases; the HPP treatment significantly decreased LTmax values of both base (natural) and process cheeses. All experimental cheeses had much higher levels of intact casein compared with typical industry-make samples. Process cheese made from the experimental treatments had visually higher stretching properties than process cheese made from Cheddar with the typical industry-make procedure. Residual rennet activity was not affected by rennet level, but the rate of proteolysis was slightly slower with lower rennet levels. The HPP treatment of Cheddar cheese reduced residual rennet activity and decreased the reduction of intact casein levels. The HPP treatment of Cheddar cheese resulted in process cheeses that had slightly higher hardness values, lower LTmax values, and retained higher storage modulus values at 70°C. We also observed that the other make procedures we used in all experimental treatments (i.e., using a less proteolytic chymosin, using a concentrated cheese milk, and maintaining a high draining pH value) had a major effect on retaining high levels of intact casein.

12. Effect of doping concentration on spectroscopic and structural properties of Nd:NaY[(W[O.sub.4]).sub.2] crystal

Abstract

The optical and structural properties of Na[Nd.sub.x][Y.sub.1-x][(W[O.sub.4]).sub.2] (NYW) single crystals grown from melt containing 1-10 at. % of Nd have been investigated. Optical absorption, photoluminescence, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray florescence studies have been carried out on grown crystals. The crystal is found to exhibit a broad absorption peak of ~16 nm width at 806 nm for 6 at. % of Nd doping. A decrease in fluorescence lifetime from 150 to 80 [micro]s with an increase in [Nd.sup.3+] concentration is observed for 1.06 [micro]m emission. Spectroscopic quality parameters ([[OMEGA].sub.4]/[[OMEGA].sub.6]) and quantum efficiency calculated from the above measurements and application of Judd-Ofelt theory are found to be 1.1 and 68%, respectively. Structural analysis through Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction data showed that the oxygen sublattice of NYW is not affected by changes in Nd dopant concentration, though the lattice dimensions are found to increase proportionately. The study for the first time shows that the high doping levels do not introduce any strain into the lattice. As a consequence the optical quality of the crystal does not deteriorate at high doping levels. The selection of doping concentration is therefore solely governed by the decay time requirement for a particular application. OCIS codes: 140.3580, 160.5690, 300.6280.

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to objectively assess the dentition status in South Indian postmenopausal women and compare the dental health of osteoporotic participants with nonosteoporotic individuals. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 consecutive ambulatory South Indian postmenopausal women (>50 years of age) were assessed for their dental health using an internationally validated scoring system. Bone mineral density (BMD) was assessed using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner. Results: About 39% of the participants were found to have osteoporosis and 23% had osteopenia at any site. More than half of them (57%) had poor dental health, and the predominant problems were cavities (43.5%) and loss of teeth (75%). Among 112 women who had tooth loss, the mean tooth loss was 4.8. The mean tooth loss among patients with normal BMD was 1.09 ± 1.2, in osteopenia was 2.1 ± 2, and in osteoporosis was 5.4 ± 2.8 (P < 0.01). The odds of having osteoporosis among the patients with three or more tooth loss were found to be 4.2 (95% confidence interval = 2.4–7.3). Conclusion: Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis had significantly higher number of tooth loss. Tooth loss may thus be used as a surrogate marker to predict osteoporosis.

Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is an eco-friendly solid state welding technique employed particularly for joining aluminium and magnesium alloys since they are difficult to join by conventional joining processes. The influence of tool rotational speed on mechanical properties of friction stir welded AZ91E magnesium alloy was investigated. The FSW processes were carried out at different rotational speeds of 900 rpm, 1000 rpm, 1100 rpm and 1200 rpm and at a constant axial load and transverse speed of 3 KN and 90 mm/min respectively. Further, the micro structural analysis and mechanical testing were performed on the welded joints. It inferred that the dynamic recrystallization have taken place in the friction stir welded zone as a result the joints fabricated at 1000 rpm rotational speed had an increase of 110% in Ultimate Tensile Strength compared to the base metal .

Abstract

Background:Sjögren’s Syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the exocrine glands accompanied by variable extra-glandular manifestations. Symptom flares, including dry eyes, dry mouth, dry skin, fatigue, myalgia and arthralgia, are frequent. Many of these symptoms have a considerable impact on quality of life, but are variable, sensitive to external factors, and difficult to measure objectively.Clinical research on Sjögren’s Syndrome is advancing with the help of patient registries: an array of clinical data is collected and available for approved studies. However, many of these registries focus on collecting clinical information and often fail to capture the diverse patient experience adequately. Thus, there is an unmet need for an online ‘patient portal’, secure and encrypted with the capability of interacting with existing registries, while also patient-facing to encourage active involvement in research and personal healthcare. Patient demand for this resource was highlighted in 2017 when the Cambridgeshire regional support group of the British Sjögren’s Syndrome Association (BSSA) contacted the Patient Led Research Hub (PLRH). The PLRH provides research expertise to co-produce research ideas with patient organisations1; the PLRH and Cambridgeshire group have since secured funding and initiated work on this project with the Cambridge Clinical Trials Unit.Objectives:Develop ‘My Sjögren’s Diary’ a cross-platform patient portal to:1.Act as an interactive tool to help patients manage their healthcare needs and aid communication with healthcare providers.2.Function as a research platform, enabling patients to consent to contact, as well as support home-based data entry, allowing real-time capture of symptom scores and ensuring ease of participation for patients. Link with the UK Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome Registry and NHS Digital to provide complementary clinical datasets.Methods:The PLRH has coordinated a team of rheumatologists, database programmers, patients and family members to develop My Sjögren’s Diary. Regular meetings, national surveys and correspondence with patients ensures the project remains relevant to patient needs, while collaborating with rheumatologists ensures the database is reliable, valid and of benefit to clinical care. Workshops hosted at key stages of database development have allowed both patients and rheumatologists to direct and refine My Sjögren’s Diary. A prototype was presented at the 2019 BSSA Annual Conference before further improvements and beta release.Results:A beta version of My Sjögren’s Diary enabling BSSA members to track their medication and symptoms is now active. Feedback will be incorporated into the final version before it is publicly available to Sjögren’s Syndrome patients. Further funding is required to develop the research platform.Conclusion:My Sjögren’s Diary encourages equal partnership between patients, clinicians and researchers. It presents a unique opportunity for comprehensive analysis of Sjögren’s Syndrome and associated health utilities. Abstract

Water is vital to life and development in all parts of the world. Since rain or other precipitation is the only source of water, it should be carefully harvested, stored, conserved and managed for the benefit of the largest number by optimizing the use of the amount available. The available water should be utilized judiciously so that the future generation is saved from deterioration stress. This study was conducted in the Deevanur tank located in Tindivanam Taluk in Tamil Nadu, India. The study was carried out in the crop calendar years from 2006–07 to 2017–18. The performance of the tank irrigation system in this study was evaluated using a Cropping Intensity indicator. This study reveals that Cropping Intensity was increased to more than 100% after rehabilitation of the tank irrigation system and is easily observed. Before rehabilitation of the tank, the average Cropping Intensity value was only 0.87. After rehabilitation of the tank, the average Cropping Intensity value increased to 1.20. The Cropping Intensity indicator is good for evaluating the modernization of the tank irrigation system. Abstract

In this paper, the preparation and studies of GeTe memory devices deposited using vapor-evaporation technique are reported. The programming current characterization shows the switching between the ON and OFF states and it was found that it requires a very low current for the transition which was comparable with other chalcogenide samples used in memory application. Switching between amorphous to crystalline nature was studied using resistance-temperature characteristics. Data-retention of GeTe device at different temperatures showed the effective use of the memory device.

Abstract

Introduction: Local infiltration of knee joint in arthroplasty, provide postoperative analgesia and preserves motor power of quadriceps, which helps in early mobilisation, as compared to femoral nerve block which paralyses vastus medialis. Aim: To compare the quality of postoperative analgesia provided by femoral nerve block and local infiltration in unilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 60 patients (25-65 years) of ASA I and II, which were randomly(using random number table) divided into two groups – Group 1-femoral nerve block (FNB) and Group 2-Local Infiltration Analgesia (LIA). Patients with chronic pain and on opioids were excluded. Numeric rating scale (primary objective), sedation score, nausea vomiting score and motor power were analysed. Abstract

Introduction: Clonidine an alpha 2 adrenoceptor agonist possesses analgesic properties and has been used as an adjuvant in epidural analgesia. The addition of clonidine to other analgesics may result in enhanced analgesia through additive mechanisms or synergistic mechanisms. The enhanced analgesia may lead to a decrease in the dosage of analgesic drugs along with reduction of side effects. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding clonidine to epidural ropivacaine and fentanyl mixture in terms of quality of analgesia and side effects in patients of total knee replacement surgery. Materials and Methods: A prospective randomised double blind study was conducted on 60 patients of ASA physical status I, II and III who underwent unilateral total knee replacement surgery under combined spinal epidural anaesthesia. Patients were divided into two Groups A and B randomly. Postoperatively Group A received continuous epidural infusion of ropivacaine 2 mg.ml -1 and fentanyl 2 μg.ml -1 along with clonidine 2 μg.ml-1 in the range of 3-7 ml.hr-1 while Group B received the ropivacaine and fentanyl epidural solution. The postoperative VAS scores, haemodynamic parameters, motor block, sedation, nausea, vomiting and any other significant side effects were noted. The two groups were compared with student's t-test, Pearson’s Chi square test and t-test using SPSS statistical software. Results: Visual analog scale scores were lower in Group A (3.38) than in Group B (3.72). The average infusion rate was lower in Group A (4.7 ± 0.7 ml.hr -1 ) than in Group B (5.5 ± 0.7 ml.hr-1 ). Patients in Group A required less dosage of rescue pain medication Paracetamol (1g i.v.), diastolic pressure and heart rate were lower in Group A. The groups were comparable in terms of sedation, motor block and nausea vomiting. Conclusion: Clonidine added to a ropivacaine and fentanyl mixture augmented the postoperative epidural analgesia without significant side effects.

Abstract

Lipids from microalgae are a suitable feedstock for biofuel production. Some algal strains can produce up to 60% of their weight in lipids under favorable growth conditions, a trait that could be desirable for fuel production. In order to accelerate the screening process of high lipid containing microalgae a procedure combining Percoll density gradient and Nile red spectrofluorometry was evaluated. Native Chlorella sp. was grown under nitrogen-replete (2.94mM) and nitrogen deplete (1 mM) conditions. Cells were separated by buoyant density on a Percoll step gradient (100, 80, 60 and 10% v/v) and lipid content of the bands was estimated by measuring emitted fluorescence using Nile red spectrofluorometry. Cultures with increased lipid production (nitrogen depletion) generated lipid peaks (∼570nm) and reached equilibrium at 10% Percoll whereas cells with low lipid content (nitrogen sufficiency) emitted no fluorescence and layered at 80% Percoll. Abstract

To determine the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of propofol-based anesthesia in gynecological laparoscopies in reducing incidences of postoperative nausea and vomiting compared to a standard anesthesia using thiopentone/isoflurane.Randomized single-blind (for anesthesia techniques used) and double-blind (for postoperative assessment) controlled trial.Operation theater, postanesthesia recovery room, teaching hospital.Sixty ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) I and II female patients (aged 20-60 years) scheduled for gynecological laparoscopy were included in the study.Patients in Group A received standard anesthesia with thiopentone for induction and maintenance with isoflurane-fentanyl, and those in Group B received propofol for induction and maintenance along with fentanyl. All patients received nitrous oxide, vecuronium, and neostigmine/glycopyrrolate. No patient received elective preemptive antiemetic, but patients did receive it after more than one episode of vomiting.Assessment for incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting as well as other recovery parameters were carried out over a period of 24 hours.Six patients (20%) in Group A and seven patients (23.3%) in Group B experienced nausea. Two patients (6.66%) in Group B had vomiting versus 12 (40%) in Group A (p0.05). Overall, the incidence of emesis was 60% and 30% in Groups A and B, respectively (p0.05). All patients in Group B had significantly faster recovery compared with those in Group A. No patient had any overt cardiorespiratory complications.Propofol-based anesthesia was associated with significantly less postoperative vomiting and faster recovery compared to standard anesthesia in patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopy.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: A growing number of companies within the cheese-making industry are now using high-protein (e.g., 4–5%) milks to increase cheese yield. Previous studies have suggested that cheeses made from high-protein (both casein and whey protein; WP) milks may ripen more slowly; one suggested explanation is inhibition of residual rennet activity due to elevated WP levels. We explored the use of microfiltration (MF) to concentrate milk for cheese-making, as that would allow us to concentrate the casein while varying the WP content. Our objective was to determine if reducing the level of WP in concentrated cheese milk had any impact on cheese characteristics, including ripening, texture, and nutritional profile. Three types of 5% casein standardized and pasteurized cheese milks were prepared that had various casein:true protein (CN:TP) ratios: (a) control with CN:TP 83:100, (b) 35% WP reduced, 89:100 CN:TP, and (c) 70% WP reduced, 95:100 CN:TP. Standardized milks were preacidified to pH 6.2 with dilute lactic acid during cheese-making. Composition, proteolysis, textural, rheological, and sensory properties of cheeses were monitored over a 9-mo ripening period. The lactose, total solids, total protein, and WP contents in the 5% casein concentrated milks were reduced with increasing levels of WP removal. All milks had similar casein and total calcium levels. Cheeses had similar compositions, but, as expected, lower WP levels were observed in the cheeses where WP depletion by MF was performed on the cheese milks. Cheese yield and nitrogen recoveries were highest in cheese made with the 95:100 CN:TP milk. These enhanced recoveries were due to the higher fraction of nitrogen being casein-based solids. Microfiltration depletion of WP did not affect pH, sensory attributes, or insoluble calcium content of cheese. Proteolysis (the amount of pH 4.6 soluble nitrogen) was lower in control cheeses compared with WP-reduced cheeses. During ripening, the hardness values and the temperature of the crossover point, an indicator of the melting point of the cheese, were higher in the control cheese. It was thus likely that the higher residual WP content in the control cheese inhibited proteolysis during ripening, and the lower breakdown rate resulted in its higher hardness and melting point. There were no major differences in the concentrations of key nutrients with this WP depletion method. Cheese milk concentration by MF provides the benefit of more typical ripening rates.

Experimental observations show that the nematic order parameter (S) is significantly enhanced as the thickness of the cell is reduced. However, calculations based on earlier theories are not in good agreement with the experimental data. We earlier developed a molecular mean field model that assumes that the medium with polar molecules consists of inter-converting anti-parallel and parallel pairs, to explain the molecular origin of the ‘two lengths’ model. The model has been used to explain effects such as double re-entrance and the effect of electric field on the nematic–isotropic transition temperature, T NI. We have recently extended the Maier–Saupe (M–S) theory using an empirical variation of surface potential, to account for the enhancement in which a molecule near the surface is assumed to feel the mean field potential (M–S type) and also the surface-induced potential. Abstract

Experimental observations show that the nematic-order parameter is significantly enhanced as the thickness of the cell is reduced. Calculations of earlier theories do not agree well with the experimental data. We have developed a model assuming that a molecule near the surface feels the mean field potential (Maier–Saupe (M-S) type) and also the surface-induced potential. Our earlier calculations of extension of M-S theory are in better agreement with the experimental data. In the present paper, we propose a simple extension of McMillan theory, including the surface potential to account for the enhancement. Our calculations lead to a surface-induced smectic phase and an improvement in agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract

The response of liquid crystals to light is very important in applications of liquid crystals in display and memory devices. Experiments have been conducted on liquid crystals doped with photoactive azo compounds, and has been shown that under incident UV radiation such systems can lower the nematic isotropic transition temperature, T NI. In addition, in some mixtures a photo-induced smectic phase is observed, attributable to the change from the trans (longer) isomer to the cis (shorter) isomer in the photoactive dopant. We have previously developed a molecular mean field model, on the assumption that the medium consists of interconverting anti-parallel and parallel pairs, to explain the molecular origin of ‘two lengths’. The model was used to explain double re-entrance, the effect of electric field on T NI, etc. This model has now been modified to include the change between the trans and cis isomer, which is equivalent to an increase in the fraction of parallel (shorter) pairs. Abstract

Surface properties decide the fatigue, wear and corrosion behavior of a material. Hence their performance can be improved by surface modifications. Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is a promising technique to develop surface composite. The aim of the present study is to develop defect free surface composite of Al 5083 alloy reinforced with TiC particles and investigate the particle distribution in the matrix, mechanical properties and wear behavior of the composites. Microstructural observations were carried out by using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructural studies revealed that distribution of particles were more uniform in samples subjected to double pass than the single pass FSP. The microhardness profiles along top surface and across the cross section of the processed samples were evaluated. The average hardness along the top surface was found to increase by 27.27%, as compared to that of the base metal (88Hv). The particles were incorporated maximum average depth about 250μm in the surface composite. The slurry erosion tests revealed that the wear rate was highly reduced in case of double pass FSP samples as compared to base metal and single pass FSPed composite

Abstract

Despite major challenges, we believe that cellulosic sugars in agricultural waste are the best sustainable source for biofuels to meet world wide energy needs. One key challenge involves dealing with diverse cellulosic sugars, many with high levels of lignin. Other tough challenges include converting both 5-and 6-carbon sugars efficiently into ethanol and recycling carbon dioxide from fermentations back into useful biomass. We would like to develop “integrated biorefineries” that will use residual biomass from conventional crops and also harness microbial genomics to identify enzymes with which to process biomass produced in marginal lands with much greater efficiency than is now possible.

Abstract

The marine toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis lenticularis has been implicated as the major vector in ciguatera seafood poisoning on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. Studies have demonstrated that associated bacteria play a role in the ciguatoxin production and that different clonal cultures of O. lenticularis harbor different culturable bacteria. In this study, more than 125 associated bacteria from two toxic clonal cultures of O. lenticularis (no. 302 and no. 303) were analyzed utilizing polymerase chain reaction amplification of the partial small subunit ribosomal DNA (rRNA), denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing. Approximately 50% of total bacteria identified in both cultures were a single species belonging to the Cytophaga-Flavobacter-Bacteroides complex. This bacterium was also found in six new O. lenticularis clonal cultures established 10 years after the original cultures used in this study and absent from a clonal culture of a different dinoflagellate species. The data presented here indicate a persistent and apparently specific association of this bacterium with O. lenticularis, which makes it a candidate involved in ciguatoxin production.

Abstract

Technical and economic problems are connected with the capacity extension of the grid to remote areas. The discovery and usage of interconnected power production using alternative power supply sources has been promoted. This article proposes a fulfillment with the use of Voltage Source Converter (VSC) and brushless generators with a standalone micro grid topology. With numerous Renewable Energy Sources (RES), including solar PV and wind the micro grid device is energized. However, to ensure the system's stability, a Diesel Generator (DG) collection and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) are also used. The topology suggested has the benefit of less number of switches and easy power. The structure applied has been fixed as an AC supply by DG. The wind and PV sources are DC sources related to the VSC DC connection. At the DC connection, the BESS is often used to promote the instantaneous equilibrium of power under complex conditions. The VSC further has the potential to alleviate power quality challenges such as harmonics, voltage control and load balancing, in addition to system integration. To illustrate all the capabilities of the proposed method, a good range of Matlab/Simulink yield outcomes are conferred.

Abstract

Flavinogenic yeasts such as Debaryomyces hansenii overproduce riboflavin (RF) in the presence of heavy metals. Growth and RF production were compared between wild-type D. hansenii and a RF production-impaired metal-tolerant ura3 mutant in the presence of sublethal cobalt(II) concentrations. Debaryomyces hansenii (wild type) exhibits an extended lag phase with an increase in RF synthesis. Supplementation of exogenous uracil shortened the lag phase at the highest concentration of cobalt(II) used, suggesting that uracil has a possible role in metal acclimation. The D. hansenii ura3 mutant isolated by chemical mutagenesis exhibited a higher level of metal tolerance, no extended lag phase, and no marked increase in RF synthesis. Transformation of the mutant with the URA3 gene isolated from Saccharyomyces cerevisiae or D. hansenii did not restore wild-type characteristics, suggesting a second mutation that impairs RF oversynthesis. Our results demonstrate that growth, metal sensitivity, and RF biosynthesis are linked.

Abstract

The toxic benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis lenticularis hosts a variety of symbiont bacterial flora. Laboratory cultured Ostreopsis clones require the presence of symbiotic Pseudomonas/Alteromonas bacterial strains for growth and toxicity development. Three culturable bacterial strains associated with Ostreopsis were identified as Pseudomonas/Alteromonas strain 1, Pseudomonas/Alteromonas strain 2 and Acinetobacter. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analyses of extracted Ostreopsis associated bacterial DNAs indicated that there were three culturable and four non-culturable associated bacterial strains. The results presented here are the first report of the presence of unculturable bacterial symbionts in a toxic benthic dinoflagellate. Ostreopsis lost toxicity when exposed to elevated temperatures in the field and laboratory culture and subsequently recovered toxicity at reduced temperatures. Ostreopsis associated culturable Pseudomonas/Alteromonas bacterial strains were significantly reduced in dinoflagellate cultures exposed to elevated temperatures. The decreased toxicity of O. lenticularis exposed to elevated temperatures and their subsequent recovery of toxicity in periods of reduced thermal stress may have resulted from the effects of elevated temperature on the spectrum of culturable and unculturable bacterial species interacting with their Ostreopsis host.

Abstract

Studies were conducted to assess the factors that may influence the rate and extent of biodegradation of biphenyl, naphthalene, phenanthrene, pentachlorophenol (PCP) and p-nitrophenol in water samples collected from the Guayanilla Bay (18 degrees N; 67.45 degrees W), southwest of Puerto Rico. In vitro studies mediated slow degradation of biphenyl, naphthalene and phenanthrene substrates by natural microbial flora present in the Bay. Addition of KNO(3) as a source of inorganic N greatly enhanced the degradation of phenanthrene but not of naphthalene, suggesting that effects on degradation due to nutrient limitation were compound specific. The rate and extent of degradation of naphthalene and PCP were higher in water samples collected closer to the source of contamination, i.e. the petrochemical complex. The identity of a phenanthrene degrading bacterium, previously identified by conventional phenotypic method (Zaidi et al., Utilizing Nature's Advanced Materials, Oxford Unviersity Press, 1999) as Alteromonas sp., was confirmed by partial DNA sequencing of the small subunit rRNA gene.

Abstract

Organic compounds exhibiting the smectic C phase are made of rod-like molecules that have dipolar groups with lateral components. We argue that the off-axis character of the lateral dipolar groups can account for tilt in layered smectics (SmC, SmC*, SmI etc.). We develop a mean-field theory of the smectic C phase based on a single-particle potential of the form UC is proportional to sin(2theta) cos phi, consistent with the biaxial nature of the phase, where theta and phi are the polar and azimuthal angles, respectively. The hard-rod interactions that favour the smectic A phase with zero tilt angle are also included. The theoretical phase diagrams compare favourably with experimental trends. Our theory also leads to the following results: i) a first-order smectic C to smectic A transition above some value of the McMillan parameter alpha, leading to a tricritical point on the smectic C to smectic A transition line and ii) a first-order smectic C to smectic C transition over a very small range of values of the model parameters. We have also extended the theory to include the next higher-order term in the tilting potential and to include the effect of different tilt angles for the molecular core and the chain in the SmC phase.

Abstract

The wind tunnel experiments were conducted over a solid/perforated plate with a long splitter plate in its plane of symmetry. The effect of varied level of perforation of the normal plate on the behaviour of two dimensional separation bubble was studied. The mean velocity and surface mean pressure distributions were also measured after preliminary flow visualization studies. The normal plate perforation levels used are 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%. The Reynolds number based on step height was varied from 4 × 103 to 1.2 × 104. Mean pressures were found to be strongly dependent on perforation level of the normal plate. The shape and size of the bubble vary with different perforated normal plate that is to say, the bubble gels reduced both in height and length upto 30% perforation level. For higher perforation of the normal plate, the bubble is completely swept out.

Abstract

Smectogenic organic compounds are made of rod-like molecules, which often have dipolar groups with lateral components. We argue that since the groups are generally off-axis, the electrostatic contribution to the intermolecular interaction between the neighbours in a smectic layer favours a tilting of the molecules. We develop a mean-field theory of the smectic-C (SmC) phase based on a single-particle potential of the form u sin 2θcos , consistent with the biaxial nature of the phase, where θ and are the polar and azimuthal angles, respectively. The hard-rod interactions which favour the smectic-A (SmA) phase with non-zero tilt are also included to construct phase diagrams involving isotropic, nematic, SmA and SmC phases. The topology of the phase diagrams, the calculated temperature variation of tilt angle in the SmC phase and the specific-heat jump across the SmA-SmC transition compare favourably with experiments.

Abstract

We extend our molecular mean field model of highly polar compounds to include hard rod interactions to develop a hybrid model. The latter interactions are restricted to second virial terms, following a method developed by Koda and Kimura. This allows us to calculate pressure-temperature phase diagrams. Depending on the model parameters used, the phase diagrams exhibit the following features: nematic-nematic phase transition, bounded SmAd region, double reentrance, reentrant nematic lake surrounded by the smectic A phase (the reentrant nematic lake merging with the main nematic sea) as well as the possibility of quadruple reentrance. We compare the calculated phase diagrams with the available experimental data.
