Dieser Beitrag analysiert die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Bildungsungleichheiten in Österreichs Schulen zwischen 2012 und 2022. Dabei stehen Veränderungen der Bildungspartizipation in den letzten drei Jahren im Fokus der empirischen Betrachtung, indem die Folgen der coronabedingten Schulschließungen und der gegenwärtigen Teuerungskrise für Ungleichheitsmuster untersucht werden. Der zweite Teil dieses Beitrags beschreibt darauf bezogene bildungspolitische Reformmaßnahmen im letzten Jahrzehnt sowie im Kontext der jüngsten Krisenbewältigung. Abschließend werden diese Entwicklungsstränge zusammengeführt und die sich daraus ergebenden Herausforderungen für die gegenwärtige Bildungspolitik diskutiert. Drei wesentliche Erkenntnisse dieses Beitrags sind: Bereits vor den jüngsten Krisenentwicklungen lassen sich für Österreich deutliche und persistente Bildungsungleichheiten nach sozialer Herkunft zeigen. Ungünstigere Voraussetzungen für Schüler:innen haben sich im Krisenkontext verstärkt und Bildungsungleichheiten im österreichischen Schulsystem weiter erhöht. Trotz bildungspolitischer Bekundung von Chancengleichheit werden Maßnahmen zur nachhaltigen Überwindung sozialer Ungleichheit im Schulsystem in der bildungspolitischen Praxis nicht bzw. nicht mit entscheidendem Nachdruck verfolgt. This chapter analyses origins and developments of educational inequalities in the Austrian school system between 2012 and 2022. In particular, we analyze the educational participation of pupils from different socioeconomic backgrounds within the last three years, paying special attention to the role of school closures during the Corona pandemic as well as the current inflation crisis. The second part of this chapter describes governmental policies regarding this question over this period. Finally, both strands are brought together in an outlook on the persistent challenges for the field of education policy and potential answers to reduce educational inequalities in the Austrian school system. Three key findings of this chapter are: Even before the recent crisis, strong and persistent social educational inequalities have characterized the Austrian school system. In the crisis context, however, socioeconomic disadvantages of pupils have intensified, leading to a further increase in educational inequalities in the Austrian school system. Despite being an often-cited goal, in practice, policy measures to overcome social inequalities in the school system are not pursued and implemented with sufficient emphasis.

The exhibition ‘An (Un)Pleasant Journey. The Life of Stefan Edlis after HIM’ brought Maurizio Cattelan’s sculpture HIM to the Jewish Museum Vienna and referred to an indelible part of collective European history from the perspective of the eponymous collector’s life story. In this context, Margula Architects realized an innovative exhibition concept for the sculpture, without ‘putting it on a pedestal’, integrating a very specific museum space, references to different times and places in the life of Stefan Edlis and a notorious piece of contemporary art in a unique design solution. Their spatial installation guides the viewer’s gaze through space on an imaginary journey through the collector’s life from his emigration to the US in 1941, to successful plastics manufacturer, and finally to famous art collector. The exhibition and the narration of Edlis’ life story revolved around ‘HIM’, one of Cattelan’s wax-sculptures, as an example of the collector’s approach to contemporary art, also mirrored in the documentary ‘The Price of Everything’ directed by Nathaniel Kahn. By adopting the concept of spatial collage Margula Architects combined multiple references to different time-spaces, mediated via fragments of design history. A rich spatial narrative was interwoven with the museum’s venue, drawing visitors in, guiding them through space and referring to Stefan Edlis’ eventful life. From medieval city views to contemporary urban imaginaries, imagination has always played a major role for outlining human understandings of urban life. Just recently, urban studies, urban planning, and artistic research have re-discovered imaginary approaches to urban lifeworlds as viable stimuli for urban transformation and social critique. In order to find pathways for sustainable development, creative strategies and imaginations of collective utopia have become a vital source of inspiration for urban planning and architecture. Interdisciplinary, inclusive approaches to create urban utopia have become central to thinking and writing about the urban as a shared imaginary matrix for collective sensemaking. This article provides a selective overview of the role of urban imaginaries from the Middle Ages, to the 20th century, and on to contemporary perspectives on urban spaces. In this brief tour d’horizon the potentials of images, imaginations, and utopian perspectives on urban life are sketched out for exploring and ultimately designing places of urban cohabitation. As an introduction to this journal issue on the role of urban imaginaries for creating liminal spaces for social change and critique, this article also aims to describe the use of creative strategies and urban imaginaries for urban studies, urban transformation projects, and artistic interventions in urban spaces. The articles in this issue demonstrate the multifaceted nature of urban imaginaries in contexts as diverse as exhibition design, visual anthropology, urban studies, and virtual/augmented reality. Adopting different imaginary perspectives ultimately paves the way for understanding urbanization as a utopian project, a collective struggle, and a manifestation of collective will, which continuously produces tangible and intangible outcomes. Processes of planetary urbanization, therefore, also inspire us to reflect on social, economic, and cultural co-evolution and participation on a global scale. The complex and overwhelming nature of impressions that continuously affect the urban dweller and the simultaneity of possible events that unfold in each single moment in any given city, seem to pose a challenge for urban studies, especially when applying traditional textual forms of inquiry. In this article, sketching was used as a research method to capture events and impressions during a weekend in the French city of Bordeaux. Instead of recounting experiences in a textual, hence structured and mostly linear fashion, a ���stream of consciousness���-sketch was chosen as mode of inquiry, in order to intuitively and accessibly depict memories of the city of Bordeaux. The result is one large Procreate canvas that captures fragments of memories, scenes, sceneries, and experiences, documenting and exploring a stay in the French region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Drawing and sketching appear to be apt tools for documenting and addressing urban complexity and simultaneity, allowing for a multiplicity of connections to be established between drawn elements. Also, they offer an intuitive and easily applicable tool for depicting and analyzing city life, while at the same time serving as a means for reflection and meditation for the researcher. In this research project we have used drawing as a research tool to investigate imaginary perspectives on city transformation in a context of Arts Based Research. We drew over photographs of a vast urban transformation site in the periphery of Vienna and analyzed the results. Thereby, we want to highlight visual structures of perception, unearth possible imaginaries that are bound to urban transformation and create creative input for future urban planning processes. Results have shown that images of newly built structures appear visually sealed, straight lined and somewhat antiseptic, with highly ordered, rectangular forms dominating the frame. In contrast, edited images with structures from the 20th century or a mix of old and new buildings exhibited organic, chaotic forms, less clear cut, straight-lined edges and an overall dominance of organic matter in the photographs. From this we infer that a balance of organic and inorganic matter develops over time and is not omitted or forgotten in the planning process. Also, the artificial, visually sealed design and the limitation of green spaces in images of new buildings are most striking. Plants simply need time to grow, engaging newly build structures in a dialogue that can be witnessed in the different images included in this article. Also, we show that imaginations of urban planning appear to be largely based on functional forms and straight-lined facades, with a balance of natural and artificial structures mostly neglected. Drawing, however, can highlight these aesthetic principles and constitute a tool to break up encrusted, traditional imaginaries of urban planning, serving as an inspiration for urban planners and architects alike. Das Kapitel zeigt, dass der Anteil der mehrsprachigen Jugendlichen an Österreichs Schulen im Zeitraum 2012 bis 2016 zugenommen hat und die demografische Entwicklung auch Schulen zu Orten der sprachlichen Vielfalt macht. Betrachtet man die fachlichen Kompetenzen der mehrsprachigen Schüler/innen in Mathematik, Englisch und Deutsch, so schneiden mehrsprachige Schüler/innen jedoch schwächer ab als einsprachige Jugendliche, wobei es deutliche Unterschiede je nach Herkunft gibt und vor allem der sozioökonomische Hintergrund ausschlaggebend für schulische Lernerfolge ist. Außerdem zeigt der Beitrag, dass die Deutschkompetenzen der Eltern mit den Kompetenzen ihrer Kinder in Zusammenhang stehen, aber erneut der sozioökonomische Hintergrund der wichtigste Erklärungsfaktor für die Schülerleistungen ist. Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit raumtheoretischen Ansätzen und deren Rolle in der Organisationsforschung. Unterschiedliche Modelle der Organisationsforschung und -theorie wurden dabei aus einer Perspektive der Raumtheorie beleuchtet, wodurch neue Ansatzpunkte für die Erarbeitung von organisationstheoretischen Ansätzen und Konzepten gewonnen wurden. Insbesondere Prozess- und Ablaufmodelle der Organisation, organisationale Sinngebung sowie unterschiedliche postmoderne Zugänge wurden dabei aus einer raumtheoretischen Sicht behandelt und konzeptionell erweitert. Das Ziel der Arbeit war es, hierbei neue Perspektiven und Konzepte für Organisationsforschung und -theorie zu eröffnen und die wissenschaftstheoretische Basis der Raumtheorie durch eine eingehende Aufarbeitung der relevanten Literatur in der Organisationstheorie abzubilden. Die Dissertation hat weitgehend explorativen Charakter und vergleicht und integriert unterschiedliche raumtheoretische und organisationstheoretische Ansätze. Als Ergebnis des analytischen Unterfangens konnten im abschließenden Teil der Arbeit eine Reihe von Eigenschaften und Grundvoraussetzungen für den Einsatz von raumtheoretischen Modellen in der Organisationsforschung und -theorie abgeleitet werden, die deren Anwendung anleiten und kontextualisieren können. Vor allem konnten Organisationen aber als Assemblage multidimensionaler und multirelationaler Räume beschrieben werden, was eine Reihe fruchtbarer Ansatzpunkte für Modelle und Theorien der Organisation bietet.

Regarding the spatial dimension of ego/alter relations, the fact whether egos and alters live within the same neighbourhood and the consequences thereof are heavily debated. Some authors argue that a network consisting mostly of people who live in the same urban area may result in lower socio-economic opportunities. Another strand of research emphasizes the importance of strong ties on the local level for neighbourhood embeddedness and social cohesion. In this article the role of the neighbourhood (a) in the formation of strong ties, (b) as the place where strong ties currently live and (c) as a meeting place for people sharing strong ties is investigated for three neighbourhoods in Vienna. In line with previous research results, it turns out that in the socially marginalized remote setting, strong ties are more often neighbourhood-based and less often interethnic. In the more affluent neighbourhood, strong ties are not so strongly bound to the neighbourhood, but are more spatially dispersed., Finisterra, vol. 48 n.º 96 (2013)
