This article summarizes recent progress in our understanding of the reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of superheavy nuclei in cold and hot fusion reactions. Calculations are done within the Fusion-by-Diffusion (FBD) model using the new nuclear data tables by Jachimowicz et al. [At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 138, 101393 (2021)]. The synthesis reaction is treated in a standard way as a three-step process (i.e., capture, fusion, and survival). Each reaction step is analyzed separately. Model calculations are compared with selected experimental data on capture, fissionlike and fusion cross sections, fusion probabilities, and evaporation residue excitation functions. The role of the angular momentum in the fusion step is discussed in detail. The fusion probability for the production of superheavy nuclei in cold fusion reactions was investigated and compared with recent experimental results for $^{48}$Ca, $^{50}$Ti, and $^{54}$Cr incident on a $^{208}$Pb target. Calculations were performed within the fusion-by-diffusion model (FbD) using new nuclear data tables by Jachimowicz et al. It is shown that the experimental data could be well explained within the framework of the FbD model. The saturation of the fusion probability at bombarding energies above the interaction barrier is reproduced. It emerges naturally from the physical effect of the suppression of contributions of higher partial waves in fusion reactions and is related to the critical angular momentum. The role of the difference in values of the rotational energies in the fusion saddle point and contact (sticking) configuration of the projectile-target system is discussed., Comment: submitted to PLB

Existing experimental facilities limit the possibilities for discovery of new nuclides to those synthesized with cross sections above 100 fb, but the perspectives for future high current accelerators could lower this limit by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, in the present work excitation functions for fusion-$xn$ evaporation reaction channels induced not only by $^{48}Ca$ but also by heavier projectiles (usually leading to smaller cross sections) on actinide targets were calculated in the framework of the fusion-by-diffusion (FBD) model. For the first time, in this approach, channels in which a proton ($pxn$) or alpha particle ($\alpha$$xn$) is evaporated have been included in the first step of the deexcitation cascade. To calculate the synthesis cross sections entry data such as fission barriers, ground-state masses, deformations and shell effects of the superheavy nuclei calculated in a consistent way within the Warsaw macroscopic-microscopic model were used. The only adjustable parameter of the FBD model is the injection point distance $s_{inj}$ and the value determined in our previous analysis of experimental cross sections for the synthesis of superheavy nuclei of Z=114-118 has been used. Excitation functions for the synthesis of selected (cross section above a few fb) new superheavies in the range of atomic numbers 112-120 are presented. Observation of 21 new heaviest isotopes is predicted. A realistic discussion of the FBD model uncertainties is presented for the first time.

The FOPI Collaboration at the GSI SIS-18 synchrotron measured charged kaons from central and semi-central collisions of Ni+Ni at a beam energy of 1.91A GeV. We present the distribution of the K$^-$\K$^+$ ratio on the energy vs polar angle plane in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame, with and without subtraction of the contribution of $\phi$(1020) meson decays to the K$^-$ yield. The acceptance of the current experiment is substantially wider compared to the previous measurement of the same colliding system. The ratio of K$^-$ to K$^+$ energy spectra is expected to be sensitive to the in-medium modifications of basic kaon properties like mass. Recent results obtained by the HADES Collaboration at 1.23A and 1.76A GeV indicate that after inclusion of the $\phi$ meson decay contribution to the K$^-$ production no difference between the slopes of the K$^-$ and K$^+$ energy spectra is observed within uncertainties. For our data a linear fit to this ratio obtained after subtraction of the $\phi$ meson contribution still shows a decrease with kinetic energy, although a constant value cannot be rejected. The contribution of $\Lambda(1520) \rightarrow p\text{K}^-$ decays estimated from fitting the thermal model to the experimental yields appears to be another factor of moderate relevance., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables (1 appendix table)

The Intermediate Mass Fragments emission probability from Projectile-Like Fragment break-up in semi-peripheral reactions has been measured in collisions of $^{124}$Xe projectiles with two different targets of $^{64}$Ni and $^{64}$Zn at the laboratory energy of 35 \amev. The two colliding systems differ only for the target atomic number Z and, consequently, for the Isospin $N/Z$ ratio. An enhancement of Intermediate Mass Fragments production for the neutron rich $^{64}$Ni target, with respect to the $^{64}$Zn, is found. In the case of one Intermediate Mass Fragment emission, the contributions of the dynamical and statistical emissions have been evaluated, showing that the increase of the effect above is due to an enhancement of the dynamical emission probability, especially for heavy IMFs (Z$\gtrsim$ 7). This proves an influence of the target Isospin on inducing the dynamical fragment production from Projectile-Like Fragment break-up. In addition, a comparison of the Xe+Ni,Zn results with the previously studied $^{112,124}Sn+^{58,64}Ni$ systems is discussed in order to investigate the influence of the projectile Isospin alone and to disentangle between Isospin effects against system-size effects on the emission probability. These comparisons suggest that the prompt-dynamical emission is mainly ruled by the $N/Z$ content of, both, projectile and target; for the cases here investigated, the influence of the system size on the dynamical emission probability can be excluded.

We present the first determination of the energy-dependent production amplitudes of N$^{*}$ resonances with masses between 1650 MeV/c$^{2}$ and 1900 MeV/c$^{2}$ for an excess energy between $0$ and $600$ MeV. A combined Partial Wave Analysis of seven exclusively reconstructed data samples for the reaction p+p $\rightarrow pK\Lambda$ measured by the COSY-TOF, DISTO, FOPI and HADES collaborations in fixed target experiments at kinetic energies between 2.14 and 3.5 GeV is used to determine the amplitude of the resonant and non-resonant contributions., Comment: 9 pages 4 figures

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. We analysed the $\phi$ meson production in central Ni+Ni collisions at the beam kinetic energy of 1.93A GeV with the FOPI spectrometer and found the production probability per event of $[8.6 ~\pm~ 1.6 ~(\text{stat}) \pm 1.5 ~(\text{syst})] \times 10^{-4}$. This new data point allows for the first time to inspect the centrality dependence of the subthreshold $\phi$ meson production in heavy-ion collisions. The rise of $\phi$ meson multiplicity per event with mean number of participants can be parameterized by the power function with exponent $\alpha = 1.8 \pm 0.6$. The ratio of $\phi$ to $\text{K}^-$ production yields seems not to depend within the experimental uncertainties on the collision centrality, and the average of measured values was found to be $0.36 \pm 0.05$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The production of K$^+$, K$^-$ and $\varphi$(1020) mesons is studied in Al+Al collisions at a beam energy of 1.9A GeV which is close or below the production threshold in NN reactions. Inverse slopes, anisotropy parameters, and total emission yields of K$^{\pm}$ mesons are obtained. A comparison of the ratio of kinetic energy distributions of K$^-$ and K$^+$ mesons to the HSD transport model calculations suggests that the inclusion of the in-medium modifications of kaon properties is necessary to reproduce the ratio. The inverse slope and total yield of $\phi$ mesons are deduced. The contribution to K$^-$ production from $\phi$ meson decays is found to be [17 $\pm$ 3 (stat) $^{+2}_{-7}$ (syst)] %. The results are in line with previous K$^{\pm}$ and $\phi$ data obtained for different colliding systems at similar incident beam energies., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Data from the experiment on the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV are analyzed with an aim to find signatures of exotic nuclear configurations such as toroid-shaped objects. The experimental data are compared with predictions of the ETNA code dedicated to look for such configurations and with the QMD model. A novel criterion of selecting events possibly resulting from the formation of exotic freeze-out configurations, "the efficiency factor", is tested. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions may indicate for the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems.

$\phi$ and K$^-$ mesons from Ni+Ni collisions at the beam energy of 1.91A GeV have been measured by the FOPI spectrometer, with a trigger selecting central and semi-central events amounting to 51% of the total cross section. The phase space distributions, and the total yield of K$^-$, as well as the kinetic energy distribution and the total yield of $\phi$ mesons are presented. The $\phi$\K$^-$ ratio is found to be $0.44 \pm 0.07(\text{stat}) ^{+0.18}_{-0.12} (\text{syst})$, meaning that about 22% of K$^-$ mesons originate from the decays of $\phi$ mesons, occurring mostly in vacuum. The inverse slopes of direct kaons are up to about 15 MeV larger than the ones extracted within the one-source model, signalling that a considerable share of gap between the slopes of K$^+$ and K$^-$ could be explained by the contribution of $\phi$ mesons to negative kaons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

A project of using a target consisting of the mixture of (249-252)Cf isotopes to be bombarded with the 48Ca beam, aimed to synthesize new isotopes of the heaviest known element Z = 118, is under way at the FLNR in Dubna. In the present work excitation functions for all the reactions: 249Cf(48Ca,xn)(297-x)118, 250Cf(48Ca,xn)(298-x)118, 251Cf(48Ca,xn)(299-x)118 and 252Cf(48Ca,xn)(300-x)118 have been calculated in the framework of the fusion-by-diffusion model, assuming fission barriers, ground-state masses and shell effects of the superheavy nuclei predicted by Kowal et al. Energy dependence of the effective cross sections for the synthesis of selected new isotopes: (293)118, (294)118, (295)118 and (296)118 is predicted for the particular isotopic composition of the Cf target prepared for the Dubna experiment., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at mid-rapidity in semi-peripheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of $<$N/Z$>$ isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio $<$N/Z$>$ distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin "migration", that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasi-spectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a Stochastic Mean Field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. A complete set of existing data on hot fusion reactions leading to synthesis of superheavy nuclei of Z =114-118, obtained in a series of experiments in Dubna and later in GSI Darmstadt and LBNL Berkeley, was analyzed in terms of a new angular-momentum dependent version of the Fusion by Diffusion (FBD) model with fission barriers and ground-state masses taken from the Warsaw macroscopic-microscopic model (involving non-axial shapes) of Kowal et al. The only empirically adjustable parameter of the model, the injection-point distance (sinj), has been determined individually for all the reactions and very regular systematics of this parameter have been established. The regularity of the obtained sinj systematics indirectly points at the internal consistency of the whole set of fission barriers used in the calculations. Having fitted all the experimental excitation functions for elements Z = 114-118, the FBD model (with the new sinj systematics) was used to predict cross sections for synthesis of elements Z = 119 and 120. Regarding prospects to produce the new element Z = 119, our calculations prefer the 252Es(48Ca,xn)300-x119 reaction, for which the synthesis cross section of about 0.2 pb in 4n channel at Ec.m.= 220 MeV is expected. The most favorable reaction to synthesize the element Z = 120 turns out to be 249Cf(50Ti,xn)299-x120, but the predicted cross section for this reaction is only 6 fb (for 3n and 4n channels).

Using the large acceptance apparatus FOPI, we study central and semi-central collisions in the reactions (energies in A GeV are given in parentheses): 40Ca+40Ca (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 1.93), 58Ni+58Ni (0.15, 0.25, 0.4), 96Ru+96Ru (0.4, 1.0, 1.5), 96Zr+96Zr (0.4, 1.0, 1.5), 129Xe+CsI (0.15, 0.25, 0.4), 197Au+197Au (0.09, 0.12, 0.15, 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5). The observables include directed and elliptic flow. The data are compared to earlier data where possible and to transport model simulations. A stiff nuclear equation of state is found to be incompatible with the data. Using the large acceptance apparatus FOPI, we study central collisions in the reactions (energies in A GeV are given in parentheses): 40Ca+40Ca (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 1.93), 58Ni+58Ni (0.15, 0.25, 0.4), 96Ru+96Ru (0.4, 1.0, 1.5), 96Zr+96Zr (0.4, 1.0, 1.5), 129Xe+CsI (0.15, 0.25, 0.4), 197Au+197Au (0.09, 0.12, 0.15, 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5). The K0 meson production by pi- mesons of 1.15 GeV/c momentum on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb nuclear targets was measured with the FOPI spectrometer at the SIS accelerator of GSI. Inclusive production cross-sections and the momentum distributions of K0 mesons are compared to scaled elementary production cross-sections and to predictions of theoretical models describing the in-medium production of kaons. The data represent a new reference for those models, which are widely used for interpretation of the strangeness-production in heavy-ion collisions. The presented results demonstrate the sensitivity of the kaon production to the reaction amplitudes inside nuclei and point to the existence of a repulsive KN-potential of 20+-5 MeV at normal nuclear matter density., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Detailed studies of the azimuthal dependence of the mean fragment and flow energies in the Au+Au and Xe+CsI systems are reported as a function of incident energy and centrality. Comparisons between data and model calculations show that the flow energy values along different azimuthal directions could be viewed as snapshots of the fireball expansion with different exposure times. For the same number of participating nucleons more transversally elongated participant shapes from the heavier system produce less collective transverse energy. Charged pion spectra measured in 58Ni-58Ni collisions at 1.06, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are interpreted in terms of a thermal model including the decay of Delta resonances. The transverse momentum spectra of pions are well reproduced by adding the pions originating from the Delta-resonance decay to the component of thermal pions, deduced from the high transverse momentum part of the pion spectra. About 10 and 18% of the nucleons are excited to Delta states at freeze-out for beam energies of 1 and 2 AGeV, respectively., Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX with 3 included figures; submitted to Physics Letters B
