Understanding ionic interactions is essential to promote adequate crop nutrition. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) and their effects on strawberries' production and postharvest quality. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions adopting a completely randomized design in a 3 × 5 factorial scheme with four replicates. The treatments consisted of the combination of three rates of S (0, 30, and 60 mg dm−3) in the form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2 H2O) and five rates of N (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 mg dm−3) in the form of urea (pro analysis grade) enriched to 10 atom% 15N. The fruits were harvested weekly when showing ¾ maturation. At the end of the harvest, evaluations of the mineral composition of the plants' shoots, determination of N utilization, and physicochemical analyses of the fruit pulp were performed. The results showed that the interaction between N and S affected the fertilizer use efficiency (FUE), strawberry production, and the physicochemical attributes of the fruit pulp. Applying 120 mg dm−3 N and 30 mg dm−3 S improved both strawberry production and postharvest quality. Therefore, balancing N and S levels can improve both the yield and quality of strawberries. This study investigated the potential use of curcumin‐mediated photodynamic treatment as a postharvest decontamination technique to reduce microbial load and growth and therefore extend the shelf life of strawberries. Curcumin was applied on strawberries, followed by illumination and storage at 4°C for 16 days. Strawberries were evaluated for decay, microbial load, and physicochemical properties such as weight loss, color, and firmness during storage. The findings revealed that curcumin‐mediated photodynamic treatment effectively reduced the decay incidence and severity in strawberries, with 20% less decay occurrence compared to untreated fruits, which was shown to be dependent on curcumin concentration. While a complete reduction in microbial load was observed upon treatment, microbial growth remained unaffected throughout storage. Moreover, photodynamic treatment did not show any adverse impact on color properties and firmness of strawberries. This eco‐friendly technique presents potential for fruit's shelf‐life extension, although optimization of treatment parameters and photodynamic unit design seems to be essential. The strawberry species Fragaria nilgerrensis Schlechtendal ex J. Gay, renowned for its distinctive white, fragrant peach-like fruits and strong disease resistance, is an exceptional research material. In a previous study, an ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) mutant library was established for this species, resulting in various yellow leaf mutants. Leaf yellowing materials are not only the ideal materials for basic studies on photosynthesis mechanism, chloroplast development, and molecular regulation of various pigments, but also have important utilization value in ornamental plants breeding. The present study focused on four distinct yellow leaf mutants: mottled yellow leaf (MO), yellow green leaf (YG), light green leaf (LG), and buddha light leaf (BU). The results revealed that the flavonoid content and carotenoid-to-chlorophyll ratio exhibited a significant increase among these mutants, while experiencing a significant decrease in chlorophyll and carotenoid contents compared to the wild type (WT). To clarify the regulatory mechanisms and network relationships underlying these mutants, the RNA-seq and weighted gene coexpression network (WGCNA) analyses were employed. The results showed flavonoid metabolism pathway was enriched both in MO and YG mutants, while the chlorophyll biosynthesis pathway and carotenoid degradation pathway were only enriched in MO and YG mutants, respectively. Subsequently, key structural genes and transcription factors were identified on metabolic pathways of three pigments through correlation analyses and quantitative experiments. Furthermore, a R2R3-MYB transcription factor, FnMYB4, was confirmed to be positively correlated with flavonoid synthesis through transient overexpression, virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), and RNA interference (RNAi), accompanying by reoccurrence and attenuation of mutant phenotype. Finally, dual-luciferase (LUC) and yeast one-hybrid assays confirmed the binding of FnMYB4 to the FnFLS and FnF3H promoters, indicating that FnMYB4 positively regulates flavonoid synthesis. In addition, correlation analyses suggested that FnMYB4 also might be involved in chlorophyll and carotenoid metabolisms. Summary: Freezing is a widely used method for preserving fresh strawberries, and selecting appropriate thawing technologies is crucial for obtaining high‐quality thawed strawberries. Radio frequency technology provides a promising method owing to its expeditious uniform heating mode with substantial penetration depth. This study investigated the effects of radio frequency thawing (RFT) using electrode gaps of 12, 14, or 16 cm on the quality attributes of frozen strawberries, comparing them with refrigerator thawing (RT) and microwave thawing (MWT). The results illustrated that strawberries thawed by RFT exhibited significantly lower firmness loss and higher levels of anthocyanins and ascorbic acid compared to RT and MWT methods. Specifically, strawberries thawed with a 12‐cm electrode gap under RFT showed faster thawing rates, increased phenolic content, and enhanced antioxidant activity. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. is a serious threat to many crops, and C. siamense has become increasingly prevalent worldwide. However, the mycelial growth and virulence of many of these species, especially below 26 °C, has largely remained unknown. Here, mycelial growth of five representative Colletotrichum strains (three C. siamense [Cs], one C. fructicola [Cf] and one C. gloeosporioides s.s. [Cg]) from diseased strawberry was measured at 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 °C. Their virulence on Fragaria vesca and highly susceptible F. × ananassa cv. Benihoppe was tested at 14 °C and 22 °C. The strains did not differ much in mycelial growth between 10 and 26 °C, although growth of the Cs and Cg strains was somewhat faster than that of Cf. However, the strains varied greatly in their virulence on the two hosts. Strain Cs GQHZJ19, which grew fastest at 22 °C, was also the most virulent on both hosts at 14 °C and 22 °C. But growth rate of Cs was only positively correlated with virulence on susceptible cv. Benihoppe after 3 days at 22 °C. Based on the virulence analysis of the five Colletotrichum strains on hosts that vary in susceptibility at distinct temperatures, host genotype might play a decisive role in disease severity at an early stage, while temperature might influence the host–Colletotrichum spp. interaction at a later stage. More Colletotrichum strains (especially C. siamense) need to be tested to determine the mycelial growth and virulence in a wider temperature range and thus we can effectively manage disease. SUMMARY: Plants synthesize an array of volatile compounds, many of which serve ecological roles in attracting pollinators, deterring herbivores, and communicating with their surroundings. Methyl anthranilate (MeAA) is an anti‐herbivory defensive volatile responsible for grape aroma that is emitted by several agriculturally relevant plants, including citrus, grapes, and maize. Unlike maize, which uses a one‐step anthranilate methyltransferase (AAMT), grapes have been thought to use a two‐step pathway for MeAA biosynthesis. By mining available transcriptomics data, we identified two AAMTs in Vitis vinifera (wine grape), as well as one ortholog in "Concord" grape. Many angiosperms methylate the plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) to produce methyl salicylate, which acts as a plant‐to‐plant communication molecule. Because the Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) SA methyltransferase can methylate both anthranilate (AA) and SA, we used this enzyme to examine the molecular basis of AA activity by introducing rational mutations, which identified several active site residues that increase activity with AA. Reversing this approach, we introduced mutations that imparted activity with SA in the maize AAMT, which uncovered different active site residues from those in the citrus enzyme. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis revealed that one of the Vitis AAMTs shares an ancestor with jasmonic acid methyltransferases, similar to the AAMT from strawberry (Frageria sp.). Collectively, these data demonstrate the molecular mechanisms underpinning AA activity across methyltransferases and identify one‐step enzymes by which grapes synthesize MeAA. Significance Statement: While the two‐step pathway responsible for the biosynthesis of the grape aroma molecule, methyl anthranilate, has remained incomplete in Vitis spp., we identified two one‐step anthranilate methyltransferases in wine and one in "Concord" grapes that can methylate the tryptophan pathway intermediate anthranilate. Tracing the molecular basis of anthranilate activity in the maize and sweet orange methyltransferases uncovered distinct active site amino acids that impart substrate specificity. The use of herbal bio-actives and phyto-contents to increase livestock productivity is a revived interest in veterinary research. The effect of wild strawberry {Fragaria vesca (FV)} pulp extract (PE) as antioxidant supplement in bovine semen cryopreservation diluent was explored. The experiment involved three fertile bulls. Three semen ejaculates per animal were collected. Each sample was diluted with Semen Transportation Diluent (STD) in 1:2 ratio. The (semen + STD) sample was vortexed and centrifuged (at 32g for 15 min) to remove 50 % supernatant. The remaining sample was re-diluted with semen cryopreservation diluent (SCD) in the ratio 1:4. Three aliquots of 0.3 ml were set aside from each (semen + STD + SCD) sample and were further treated with; 1: 0.7 mL of SCD (SCD group); 2: 0.7 mL SCD and 0.8 % FV-PE (FV-PE 0.8) and; 3: 0.7 mL SCD and 1.6 % FV-PE (FV-PE 1.6). Sperm quality parameters were evaluated before and after 48 h of cryopreservation. Results showed significantly enhanced mean percentage of sperm viability, progressive motility, velocity and fertilizability in FV-PE 0.8 and FV-PE 1.6 groups as compared with SCD group. BACKGROUND: Most microorganisms that cause food decay and the lower the shelf life of foods are fungi. Nanotechnologies can combat various diseases and deal with the application of nanomaterial to target cells or tissues. In this study selenium nanoparticles (Se‐NPs) were synthesized using ascorbic acid and characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction and zeta potential. The different concentrations of As/Se‐NPs were tested against various fungi, including Alternaria linicola, Alternaria padwickii, Botrytis cinerea, Bipolaris sp., Cephalosporium acremonium, Fusarium moniliform and Fusarium semitectum. This study tested the influence of coated As/Se‐NPs on healthy strawberry fruits and those infected with Botrytis cinerea during 16 days of storage, with regard to shelf life, decay percentage, weight loss, total titratable acidity percentage, total soluble solids content (TSS) and anthocyanin content. RESULTS: Energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis showed only two elements: selenium and oxygen. TEM images showed that the nanoparticles ranged in size between 26 to 39 nm and were rhombohedral in shape. Se‐NPs showed antifungal activity against all tested fungi, the most effective being against Botrytis cinerea, Cephalosporium acremonium and Fusarium semitectum. During storage periods of strawberries fruits coated with As/Se‐NPs, the shelf life was increased, and the number of decaying fruits was less than in control (uncoated) and coated infected fruits. The decline in weight loss was lower in coated fruits than in control fruits. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrated that As/Se‐NPs could effectively maintain the postharvest quality of strawberries, even when the fruit was infected with B. cinerea. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Postharvest decay caused by Botrytis cinerea (gray mold) and Fusarium solani (fruit decay) negatively affects strawberry fruits during handling and marketing.The effect of cinnamon oil, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and/or pomegranate peel powder were estimated on the growth of the two pathogenic fungi and their fruit decay incidence under in vitro and in vivo conditions.The isolated fungi from decayed strawberry fruits were identified as Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium sp. The isolated Fusarium sp. was identified molecularly as Fusarium solani and registered in GenBank under accession number ON248575.1 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/ON248575.1).Complete fungal growth suppression was observed at a concentration of 3% for all tested materials, Additionally the same (100%) effect was achieved at 2% of a combination of essential oil, salts and pomegranate peel powder. Significant reduction in decay incidence and severity was observed in inoculated strawberry fruits treated with the same concentrations of the tested materials after 10 and 15 days of storage.The results demonstrate that cinnamon oil, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and/or pomegranate peel powder have potency as eco-friendly products, for safe postharvest treatments against strawberry fruit rots during storage. Strawberries in California are grown in specific coastal areas where land is scarce and climate change threatens future production. Strawberry growers are under pressure to adopt sustainable production strategies such as crop rotation, but this practice requires more land than back-to-back planting. The objectives of this research were to quantify the rate of crop rotation across the three main strawberry producing regions in California (Ventura, Santa Maria, and Monterey Bay), and evaluate geographic and edaphic influences on crop rotation. All strawberry fields in the main strawberry producing regions of California were identified by satellite imagery and manual inspection for the years 2017 through 2022. ArcGIS Pro was used to outline each strawberry field and compare among years to determine the period between successive strawberry plantings. Edaphic characteristics and shapefiles for surrounding fields were retrieved from public datasets. The three regions significantly differed in their rates of crop rotation. On average, 95, 52, and 25% of strawberry hectares were rotated each year in the Monterey Bay, Santa Maria, and Ventura regions, respectively. Shorter rotation lengths were associated with reduced distance from the ocean and soil with a higher percentage of sand. Based on 2 years of disease surveys, fields infested with Macrophomina phaseolina tended to be further inland than fields infested with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in the Monterey Bay region. This study determined that distance from the ocean and soil texture are associated with crop rotation lengths in California strawberry production. Enough land may be available in the Santa Maria and Monterey Bay regions for growers to lengthen crop rotations, but water quality, social networks, and financial considerations that were outside the scope of this study are likely to limit the ability for strawberry growers to maximize the duration of crop rotations. By increasing the permeability of the cell membrane of the treated material, pulsed electric fields (PEF) enhance the internal transport of various chemical substances. Changing the distribution of these components can modify the chemical and thermal properties of the given material. This study aimed to analyze the impact of PEF (1 kV/cm; 1 and 4 kJ/kg) applied to strawberries prior to drying by various methods (convective, infrared-convective, microwave-convective, and vacuum) on the chemical and thermal properties of the obtained dried materials (sugars content, total phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity (ABTS and DPPH assays); thermal properties (TGA and DSC); and molecular composition (FTIR)). PEF could have induced and/or enhanced sucrose inversion because, compared to untreated samples, PEF-pretreated samples were characterized by a lower share of sucrose in the total sugar content but a higher share of glucose and fructose. Reduced exposure to oxygen and decreased drying temperature during vacuum drying led to obtaining dried strawberries with the highest content of antioxidant compounds, which are sensitive to these factors. All PEF-pretreated dried strawberries exhibited a lower glass transition temperature (Tg) than the untreated samples, which confirms the increased mobility of the system after the application of an electric field. The aim of this study was to develop functional composite edible films or coatings for fruit preservation by the addition of bioactive components in combinations that have not yet been thoroughly studied, according to the relevant literature. Edible films were initially composed of (i) chitosan (CH), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) (50%-37.5%-12.5% ratio), and (ii) hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) (50%-37.5%-12.5% ratio). The bioactive components incorporated (5, 10 and 15% v/v) were as follows: (i) pomace oil-based nanoemulsion (NE) aiming to enhance barrier properties, and (ii) caffeine (C), aiming to enhance the antioxidant activity of films, respectively. Indeed, NE addition led to very high barrier properties (low oxygen and water vapor permeability), increased flexibility and reduced color. Furthermore, the contribution of these coatings to fresh strawberries' preservation under cold storage was investigated, with very promising results concerning weight loss, color difference, and preservation of fruit moisture and quantity of O2 and CO2 inside the packages. Additionally, C addition led to very high antioxidant activity, reduced color and improved barrier properties. Finally, the contribution of these coatings to avocado's preservation under cold storage was investigated, with very encouraging results for color difference, hardness and peroxide value of the fruit samples. Introduction: It has been suggested that the mechanism of phloem loading, that is apoplastic or symplastic loading, may affect a plant's ability to adapt to elevated CO2 levels. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) are two fruit crops that use different mechanisms to load sugars into the phloem - the former symplastically and the latter apoplastically - yet both species can increase their yields when grown in a CO2-enriched environment. In this study, we subjected strawberry and tomato plants to long-term CO2 enrichment to determine the morphological and physiological adaptations that enable them to increase their yields in response to higher CO2 levels. Methods: Transplanted tomato and strawberry plants were subjected to ambient (400 ppm) and elevated (800 ppm) CO2 for three months. We examined various parameters associated with growth, yield, photosynthesis, and carbon allocation by means of phenotyping, gas exchange analysis, and 13C labelling combined with isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Results: We found that CO2 enrichment promoted growth and reproductive development in both species, resulting in more flowers per plant (tomato and strawberry), larger crown (strawberry), and, eventually, higher yields. Gas exchange analysis and A/ci curves revealed that elevated CO2 increased carbon assimilation rate in strawberry, but not in tomato - the latter being limited by Rubisco's carboxylation efficiency. Finally, whereas both species prioritized fruit development over the development of other sink organs, they were both limited by carbon export at elevated CO2, since new photoassimilates were equally distributed to various sinks between CO2 treatments. Discussion: The findings suggest that both species will benefit from future increases in CO2 levels and support current glasshouse practices entailing CO2 enrichment. Those benefits probably stem from an enhanced performance of both species at early developmental stages, as differences in carbon assimilation rate (tomato) and carbon allocation between treatments at late developmental stages were absent. Moreover, crop adaptation to elevated CO2 seems to depend on the ability of each species to respond to elevated CO2, rather than on the phloem loading mechanism per se. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the effects of different microwave drying conditions on the texture and nutritional quality of candied strawberries in a vacuum environment. This study investigated the effects of three different vacuum microwave treatment conditions (2.5 w/g-1.5 h, 3.5 w/g-1 h, 4.5 w/g-0.5 h) on moisture migration characteristics, texture, microstructure, color, anthocyanins, and phenolics of candied strawberries, which were evaluated by hot air drying. The results showed that the time required for vacuum microwave drying to dry candied strawberries to 20%±2% moisture content was significantly lower than that of hot air, and the higher the microwave power, the shorter the drying time. In addition, the water in the candied strawberries obtained after drying mainly appeared in two states, namely, bound water and water not easy to flow. The relaxation time T2 of strawberry candied strawberries obtained by vacuum microwave drying increased with the increase of microwave power, which indicated that the degree of freedom of water increased. Cross-sectional microscopic observation found that vacuum microwave drying caused cell wall rupture, and the higher the microwave power, the closer the site of fissure formation to the medullary core, and the bigger the fissure, and the smaller the porosity, whereas the cellular integrity and the porosity of the samples dried by the hot air were higher than that of microwave drying. In addition, the hardness, viscosity, and a* value of vacuum microwave-dried dried strawberry preserves were lower than those of hot air-dried samples, but the L* value, total sugar, anthocyanin, and phenolic content were higher. The real-time detection of fruits and plants is a crucial aspect of digital agriculture, enhancing farming efficiency and productivity. This study addresses the challenge of embedding a real-time strawberry detection system in a small mobile robot operating within a greenhouse environment. The embedded system is based on the YOLO architecture running in a single GPU card, with the Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) representation being employed to accelerate the detection process. The experiments conducted in this study demonstrate that the proposed model achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of over 97%, processing eight frames per second for 512 × 512 pixel images. These results affirm the utility of the proposed approach in detecting strawberry plants in order to optimize the spraying process and avoid inflicting any harm on the plants. The goal of this research is to highlight the potential of integrating advanced detection algorithms into small-scale robotics, providing a viable solution for enhancing precision agriculture practices. YABBY genes encode specific TFs of seed plants involved in development and formation of leaves, flowers, and fruit. In the present work, genome‐wide and expression analyses of the YABBY gene family were performed in six species of the Fragaria genus: Fragaria × ananassa, F. daltoniana, F. nilgerrensis, F. pentaphylla, F. viridis, and F. vesca.The chromosomal location, synteny pattern, gene structure, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out. By combining RNA‐seq data and RT‐qPCR analysis we explored specific expression of YABBYs in F. × ananassa and F. vesca. We also analysed the promoter regions of FaYABBYs and performed MeJA application to F. × ananassa fruit to observe effects on gene expression.We identified and characterized 25 YABBY genes in F. × ananassa and six in each of the other five species, which belong to FIL/YAB3 (YABBY1), YAB2 (YABBY2), YAB5 (YABBY5), CRC, and INO clades previously described. Division of the YABBY1 clade into YABBY1.1 and YABBY1.2 subclades is reported. We observed differential expression according to tissue, where some FaYABBYs are expressed mainly in leaves and flowers and to a minor extent during fruit development of F. × ananassa. Specifically, the FaINO genes contain jasmonate‐responsive cis‐acting elements in their promoters which may be functional since FaINOs are upregulated in F. × ananassa fruit under MeJA treatment.This study suggests that YABBY TFs play an important role in the development‐ and environment‐associated responses of the Fragaria genus. The European pepper moth (Duponchelia fovealis) is predominant in the main strawberry production areas, including Brazil, as an important invasive pest and causes substantial damage to the crop. This damage is mainly attributed to the lack of effective management strategies. A promising alternative for managing this pest is implementing biological control through releasing natural enemies. This study determined the dispersal capacity of Trichogramma pretiosum for the management of D. fovealis in a strawberry crop in a low tunnel system 24, 48, and 72 h after parasitoid release. The experiments were carried out on strawberry farms in the mountainous region of Espírito Santo. Tunnels measuring 1.20 m wide by 50 m long were selected, in which artificial infestations of 30, 60, 90, and 120 eggs of D. fovealis were made on both sides of the strawberry tunnel at distances of 3, 7, 11, and 15 m, respectively, from the central point where the parasitoids were released. After the initial 24 h, new eggs were placed to replace the infested ones; the replacement was repeated at 48 and 72 h. The results indicated that, in strawberry plantations, T. pretiosum was efficient in parasitism. There was no difference between parasitism 24 and 48 h after parasitoid release, but parasitism was substantially lower after 72 h. The dispersion capacity of T. pretiosum was 14.21 linear meters, corresponding to an area of 17.05 m2. It is recommended that 93,000 T. pretiosum females be released per hectare every three days. Cheese whey is the most polluting by -product of the dairy industry, and whey use has been the subject of much research; however, the conversion of liquid whey into value -added yogurt products is insufficient. The aim of the current research is to study the effect of fermentation of a milk -liquid whey mixture into yogurt and strawberry supplementation on the syneresis index and textural and organoleptic characteristics during cold storage. For yogurt preparation, 25% liquid whey was substituted with the milk used for yogurt production, and after the fermentation process was complete, strawberry supplementation (12%). Results show that by using liquid whey in yogurt formulation, the syneresis index increased, whereas for texture properties, higher mean values of cohesiveness and springiness and lower values for hardness, adhesiveness, and gumminess were found. The time of storage also had a significant impact on the yogurt properties, and as the time of storage increased, the syneresis index increased and sensory scores reduced noticeably. The level of whey separation was significantly increased in yogurt samples containing liquid whey on the last day of storage, according to an evaluation of yogurt qualities (P<0.01). The results showed that although adding liquid whey into the yogurt production decreased the sensory characteristics (consistency and taste scores), yogurt with liquid whey and strawberry supplementation had an acceptable sensory score. Therefore, the use of liquid whey in the production of functional yogurt enables its reintroduction in the food supply chain and enhances sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture not only causes a decrease in soil fertility but also has negative effects on the environment, natural resources, and human health. Therefore, environmentally friendly practices, such as the use of organic fertilizers (OFs) and plant biostimulants that increase yield and fruit quality can be effective in solving these problems. In the present research study, we investigated the impact of using an OF alone and in combination with as a biostimulant different doses of humic acid (HA) on plant growth parameters, yield, fruit characteristics, and leaf mineral nutrient concentrations in plants of the Monterey and Albion strawberry varieties. As a result of this study, we determined that the combined application of the OF and HA increased the yield, fruit quality, plant growth, and nutritional elements in the crop compared with using the OF alone. In addition, the Monterey variety plants treated with OF and HA (5.0 L·ha-1) in T3 offered the best results among the different treatment groups and varieties. With this treatment, we obtained the highest total yield (262.42 g/plant), fruit weight, total soluble solids (TSS), and TSS/acid ratio, as well as increased growth parameters, and mineral nutrient concentrations in leaves. The application of seaweed extract and microbial biostimulants has been suggested as a promising approach to overcome yield-limiting factors in organic farming. Yet, information regarding their impact on organic strawberry production is limited. This 2-year field study evaluated the effect of seaweed extract and microbial biostimulants and their synergistic effects on strawberry plant growth, nutrient uptake, fruit yield, and quality under organic production. The biostimulant effects were compared on two strawberry cultivars: Sweet SensationVR Florida127 and Florida Brilliance. Over two seasons, the combination of seaweed extract plus microbial biostimulants applied biweekly consistently resulted in a significant increase of whole-season marketable and total strawberry fruit yields by 23% and 20% on average, respectively, compared with the no-biostimulant control. Application of either biostimulant alone did not consistently show positive effects on strawberry productivity. Modified strawberry root system architecture, enhanced N uptake, increased number of crowns, and higher soil respiration were observed in the biostimulant combination treatment in contrast to the no-biostimulant control. The biostimulant impact was not influenced by strawberry cultivar, but genotypic difference in yield performance under organic production was observed. 'Florida Brilliance' produced significantly higher total fruit number and yield than 'Florida127' by 26% and 12%, respectively, in the first season, and by 34% and 11%, respectively, in the second season. Marketable fruit number (by 18%) and yield (by 9%) of 'Florida Brilliance' were also higher in the first season, along with greater marketable fruit number (by 31%) in the second season. In addition, 'Florida Brilliance' showed significantly higher values of SPAD index, photosynthetic rate (early harvest), and fruit mineral contents based on dry weight (late harvest) than 'Florida127' in both seasons. Although the biostimulant treatments exhibited little influence on the fruit quality attributes including soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), SSC/TA, and total anthocyanin content, varietal differences were observed with significantly higher levels of SSC and lower contents of total anthocyanins in 'Florida 127' vs. 'Florida Brilliance' during each season. The benefits of combined application of seaweed extract and microbial biostimulants demonstrated in this study suggest the need to further elucidate their synergistic functions in promoting nutrient uptake and fruit yield in organic strawberry production systems under different soil and environmental conditions. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Identifying the best strawberries to produce colour stable nectars is a priority for the juice industry. Although riper strawberries produce nectars with better colour stability, variability between cultivars means that surface colour cannot be used as a single quality attribute to determine stability. Conductivity and bio‐impedance measurements can be used to differentiate ripeness of strawberries. The commercially available PEF Control System (ELEA) can measure cell disruption by measuring conductivity at different frequencies. Updated software measured strawberry conductivity at 121 frequencies between 100 Hz and 1 MHz to determine whether conductivity at these frequencies could differentiate ripeness, and be compared with the colour acceptance and stability of nectars produced from these strawberries.A high‐low ratio (HLR) was calculated by dividing the conductivity at frequency 1 MHz by conductivity at 1 kHz. HLR could be used to separate five strawberry ripeness stages, with decreasing HLR associated with increasing ripeness. HLR was then compared with the colour of nectars produced from these strawberries. Although there was a good correlation between HLR and an acceptable colour to consumers on initial production (r = −0.823, P < 0.001) and after 12 weeks of storage (−0.759, P < 0.001), cultivars differed greatly in both HLR and colour stability. Additionally, HLR had a strong correlation with firmness.The PEF Control System could be used to differentiate ripeness of strawberries by HLR, and therefore was associated with colour stability. The aim of this study is to dry whole strawberries, which are a sensitive and high value-added food, with different heating rate approach in different drying stages developed to overcome the problems encountered in microwave freeze-drying (MFD). To do this, a specially designed microwave (2450 MHz) freeze-drying system developed in our laboratory was used. Internal temperatures at two different whole strawberries which are one at the center and one at the edge of the basket were recorded during drying experiments by using a signal conditioner and fiber optic probes. Drying experiments were carried out until a moisture content of below 10% by weight was attained. Heating rates determined by preliminary trials of 0.035 °C/min and 0.2 °C/min were applied to whole strawberries in the primary and secondary drying stages, respectively. The quality parameters of microwave freeze-drying and freeze-dried whole strawberries were compared. In this context, dried strawberries were subjected to some physical (moisture content, water activity, texture, and color) and chemical (vitamin C, total phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity) analyses. Microwave freeze-drying (MDF) was able to preserve the vitamin C content of all strawberries by approximately 55% while yielding a final product of substantially similar quality to freeze-drying (FD). Chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) has emerged as a severe invasive pest of strawberry Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne in the United States. The objective of this study was to assess the field efficacy of a biopesticide and thrips predator, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot for S. dorsalis management in field grown strawberry compared to synthetic insecticide applications that are current industry standard (spinetoram) conducted at UF/IFAS GCREC, FL during 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 in a 2-year field study. The following treatments were applied in the field: (1) biopesticide, capsicum oleoresin extract + garlic oil + canola oil application at maximum label rate; (2) predatory mite of thrips, A. swirskii released at 30 predators per plot; (3) spinetoram applied at maximum label rate; and (4) biopesticide applied 24 h before release of A. swirskii. A control plot with no insecticide or predatory mite releases was maintained. Results show that the capsicum extract can be used for management of S. dorsalis , especially during the latter stages of strawberry field season when resistance to spinetoram is high. Strawberry aroma, crucial for determining quality, involves complex volatile compounds which are challenging to identify. This study explores strawberry aroma analysis using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the Automated Mass Spectral Deconvolution and Identification System (AMDIS). Central to our research is the creation of a bespoke strawberry Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) user library using AMDIS, specifically for analyzing strawberry aromas. The library contains VOCs from 61 strawberry cultivars, integrating information on 104 VOCs, including mass spectra, retention index, chemical class, CAS number, formula, odor threshold, and odor description. This custom library significantly outperformed a commercial library by reducing potential false hits by 200, decreasing the size of report files by over 96%, and, most importantly, shortening AMDIS analysis processing time from 31 s to 9 s, representing an approximate 71% reduction. Further, the study demonstrates the library's practical application by contrasting the aroma profiles of strawberries harvested in winter and spring. This comparison revealed significant VOC variations depending on seasonal temperature changes, offering insights into environmental influences on strawberry aroma. In conclusion, this research marks a significant advance in strawberry aroma quality analysis. The importance of implementing recirculating drainage for greenhouse strawberries is often overlooked because of the low electrical conductivity (EC) of drainage and transpiration despite the large area of cultivation in Korea. In this study, we analyzed the growth of strawberry crops and their water and individual nutrient use efficiency when using closed-loop hydroponics in greenhouses. The study consisted of two parts: Experiment (Exp) 1 and Exp 2, each of which employed a different closed-loop hydroponic control method. In Exp 1, the system was controlled solely based on the EC of the drainage mixed with raw water. In Exp 2, the nutrient solution (NS) was corrected according to the ion concentrations in the drainage, with correction intervals of 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and no correction, while the control treatment was open-loop. In Exp 1, a prolonged increase in drainage EC resulted in an imbalance in NS ion composition and reduced fruit yield. In Exp 2, the NS composition was stabilized through periodic nutrient correction, and the fruit yield of the closed-loop treatments did not differ from the open-loop treatment. However, the closed-loop with 2- and 4-week correction in Exp 2 showed 94% and 88% higher nutrient use efficiency (NUE), respectively, than an open-loop system. Among the closed-loop treatments, the 2- and 4-week correction intervals had 36% and 32% higher NUE than the no-correction treatment. Furthermore, the 2-week correction interval showed a 3% improvement in NUE compared to the 4-week interval. These findings highlight the importance of considering a shorter ion correction interval for optimal NUE and normal plant growth in recirculating hydroponic systems of strawberry cultivation. Florida's strawberry industry is currently valued at $511 million annually but faces challenges from pathogens and arthropod pests especially Tetranychus urticae Koch (twospotted spider mite) and Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (chilli thrips). Predatory mites, particularly Neoseiulus cucumeris Oudemans, Neoseiulus californicus McGregor, and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, play a crucial role in pest management. However, there are concerns regarding how these biological control agents are affected by fungicides used in current pathogen management strategies. This study assessed the residual effects of commonly used fungicides in strawberries on the survival, feeding, and oviposition of these predatory mites. Commercially sourced predatory mites were reared on S. dorsalis larvae, and gravid female predators placed on fungicide treated strawberry leaf discs in a Munger cell for 120 h. Fungicides tested included two formulations of Captan, hydrogen peroxide + peroxyacetic acid, cyprodinil + fludioxonil, tetramethylthiuram disulfide, cyflufenamid and a control. All fungicides tested had an impact on the survival, feeding, and oviposition of the predators. Among the fungicide treatments, the lowest predator survival was observed in the cyprodinil + fludioxonil treatment, while the highest was observed in the hydrogen peroxide + peroxyacetic acid and tetramethylthiuram disulfide treatments. In all treatments, feeding and oviposition greatly varied among predators; specifically, N. cucumeris and A. swirskii had the lowest prey consumption, while N. californicus had the highest. These findings highlight the potential incompatibility between fungicides and predatory mites and demonstrate the need for the development of a fungicide rotation program tailored to the different susceptibilities of predators to fungicides. In this study, the impact of formulated emulsion was studied on strawberries which were coated using dip and electrostatic spray coating methods. The coated strawberries were kept at room temperature for a period of 12 days. A significant level of chargeability of w/o emulsion was achieved in terms of charge-to-mass ratio of 2.81 mC/kg at an applied high voltage of 2.0 kV, applied air pressure of 0.3 MPa, and liquid flow rate of 33.6 ml/min. The distance of 170 mm from the nozzle tip to Faraday cage was maintained during the measurements. As compared to uncoated and dip coated strawberries, the water-in-oil based electrostatically charged sprays considerably (p < 0.05) reduced the weight loss, decay rate, pH, titrable acidity, TSS, and antioxidant activity. In both the cases, i.e. strawberries coated with dip and electrostatic spray coating methods, the same weight loss was observed, however, there was a considerably less weight loss as compared to uncoated samples. The textures of the uncoated (9.02 N) and dip coated (12.58 N) samples were significantly different from the electrostatic spray coated (15.85 N) samples. Since, the coating formulation had no impact on the sensory attributes, the samples were considered as acceptable at the end of the storage. Cold stress has seriously inhibited the growth and development of strawberry during production. CBF/DREB1 is a key central transcription factor regulating plant cold tolerance, but its regulatory mechanisms are varied in different plants. Especially in strawberry, the molecular mechanism of CBF/DREB1 regulating cold tolerance is still unclear. In this study, we found that FveDREB1B was most significantly induced by cold stress in CBF/DREB1 family of diploid woodland strawberry. FveDREB1B was localized to the nucleus, and DREB1B sequences were highly conserved in diploid and octoploid strawberry, and even similar in Rosaceae. And FveDREB1B overexpressed strawberry plants showed delayed flowering and increased cold tolerance, while FveDREB1B silenced plants showed early flowering and decreased cold tolerance. Under cold stress, FveDREB1B activated FveSCL23 expression by directly binding to its promoter. Meanwhile, FveDREB1B and FveSCL23 interacted with FveDELLA, respectively. In addition, we also found that FveDREB1B promoted anthocyanin accumulation in strawberry leaves by directly activating FveCHS expression after cold treatment and recovery to 25°C. DREB1B genes were also detected to be highly expressed in cold‐tolerant strawberry resources ‘Fragaria mandschurica’ and ‘Fragaria nipponica’. In conclusion, our study reveals the molecular mechanism of FveDREB1B‐FveSCL23‐FveDELLA module and FveDREB1B‐FveCHS module to enhance the cold tolerance of woodland strawberry. Strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) is a species of great economic and nutritional importance. It is widely cultivated in different regions of the world. However, climatic factors have a significant influence on its production.To evaluate the ecoclimatic suitability and growth index of F.×ananassa in the face of the impacts of climate change in Brazil and the world.The potential global distribution of F.×ananassa it was based on predicted global climate changes using CLIMEX and the A1B and A2 emissions scenario for the years 2050 and 2100. CLIMEX weekly growth index (GIw) was applied, and productivity data in commercial strawberry cultivation in Brazilian areas were collected.The results indicate a progressive reduction in areas suitable for strawberry cultivation globally, mainly on the African continent, Australia, China, and the Americas for the years 2050 and 2100. In Brazil, only the South region and part of the Southeast will continue to be suitable for strawberry production.The CLIMEX model predicts a reduction in the suitable area for cultivating Fragaria×ananassa Duch between 2050 and 2100 due to climate change. AbstractStrawberry production is significantly affected by the climatic conditions (mainly light, temperature, and humidity). Thus, management of climate is of utmost importance for improving the plant growth, yield, and quality of strawberries. Keeping this in view, a study was undertaken to study the impact of greenhouse climate on performance of strawberry cultivated in soilless media under time-differential supplemental lighting. This research included three levels of supplemental lighting (I) viz. 235 (I1), 169 (I2), 132 μ mol m−2 s−1 (I3), and 3 levels of photoperiod (P) viz. 12 (P1), 14 (P2), and 16 h (P3) replicated thrice in a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) layout. The supplemental lighting of 132 μ mol m−2s−1 and photoperiod of 16 h resulted in highest fruit yield of 450.0 g/plant with an average value of 408.9 g/plant. The results indicated a significant increase in yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and fertilizer use efficiency (FUE) of camarosa strawberry with decrease in supplemental lighting from 235 to 132 μ mol m−2s−1 and increase in photoperiod from 12 to 16 h. Thus, subjecting the camarosa strawberry plants to light in the range of 362.5–430.6 μ mol m−2s−1 (including supplemental light of 132 μ mol m−2s−1) for about 16 h, keeping the temperature and humidity in the range of 19.5–25.0 °C and 65.0–75.0%, respectively, is desired to record the improved plant growth and quality fruit production, when cultivated in soilless media inside a greenhouse. Plant diseases significantly impact crop productivity and quality, posing a serious threat to global agriculture. The process of identifying and categorizing these diseases is often time-consuming and prone to errors. This research addresses this issue by employing a convolutional neural network and support vector machine (CNN-SVM) hybrid model to classify diseases in four economically important crops: strawberries, peaches, cherries, and soybeans. The objective is to categorize 10 classes of diseases, with six diseased classes and four healthy classes, for these crops using the deep learning-based CNN-SVM model. Several pre-trainedmodels, including VGG16, VGG19, DenseNet, Inception, MobileNetV2, MobileNet, Xception, and ShuffleNet, were also trained, achieving accuracy ranges from 53.82% to 98.8%. The proposed model, however, achieved an average accuracy of 99.09%. While the proposed model's accuracy is comparable to that of the VGG16 pre-trained model, its significantly lower number of trainable parameters makes it more efficient and distinctive. This research demonstrates the potential of the CNN-SVM model in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of plant disease classification. The CNN-SVM model was selected over VGG16 and other models due to its superior performance metrics. The proposed model achieved a 99% F1-score, a 99.98% Area Under the Curve (AUC), and a 99% precision value, demonstrating its efficacy. Additionally, class activation maps were generated using the Gradient Weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) technique to provide a visual explanation of the detected diseases. The wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.; F. vesca) represents a resilient and extensively studied model organism. While the AP2/ERF gene family plays a pivotal role in plant development, its exploration within F. vesca remains limited. In this study, we characterized the AP2/ERF gene family in wild strawberries using the recently released genomic data (F. vesca V6.0). We conducted an analysis of the gene family expansion pattern, we examined gene expression in stem segments and leaves under cold conditions, and we explored its functional attributes. Our investigation revealed that the FvAP2/ERF family comprises 86 genes distributed among four subfamilies: AP2 (17), RAV (6), ERF (62), and Soloist (1). Tandem and segmental duplications significantly contributed to the growth of this gene family. Furthermore, predictive analysis identified several cis-acting elements in the promoter region associated with meristematic tissue expression, hormone regulation, and resistance modulation. Transcriptomic analysis under cold stress unveiled diverse responses among multiple FvAP2/ERFs in stem segments and leaves. Real-time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) results confirmed elevated expression levels of select genes following the cold treatment. Additionally, overexpression of FvERF23 in Arabidopsis enhanced cold tolerance, resulting in significantly increased fresh weight and root length compared to the wild-type control. AbstractSoluble fertilizers are among the main costs in strawberry production, so knowing the nutrients balance in plant tissue is essential. In this sense, the Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis (CND) method is presented as a multivariate analysis tool for the nutritional diagnosis of the crop. The main goal of this paper was to establish CND standards and critical nutrient levels in strawberries cultivated in a soilless system. This study uses the Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis (CND) method to analyze nutrient levels grown in a soilless system. Commercial production greenhouses were evaluated for yield and leaf nutrients contents to develop the standards. Data were collected from 52 plots, each consisting of diagnostic leaves from 10 plants, and subsequently analyzed to determine critical nutrient deficiencies and excesses. The CND methodology was sensitive in diagnosing the differences between high and low-yield populations. Thus, adjusting the critical nutrient levels for soilless strawberry cultivation was possible. Due to deficiency, the most limiting nutrients for strawberry production were N, Mg, and S, and Zn and Cu due to excess. Results indicate specific nutrient thresholds, with significant findings from the integration of all indices, it was possible to calculate the sufficiency ranges for soilless strawberry: N = 26–31, P = 4–7, K = 8–11, Ca = 10–15, Mg = 3–4, S = 0.3–0.5 in g kg−1, and B = 18–95, Cu = 1–2, Fe = 46–96, Mn = 80–203, Zn = 1–40, Mo = 1.3–2.7, Ni = 0.1–0.4 in mg kg−1. In recent years, due to breeding improvements, strawberries with low anthocyanin content and a white rind are now available, and they are highly valued in the market. Strawberries with white skin color do not turn red when ripe, making it difficult to judge ripeness. The soluble solids content (SSC) is an indicator of fruit quality and is closely related to ripeness. In this study, visible–near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy are used for non-destructive evaluation of the SSC. Vis-NIR (500–978 nm) and NIR (908–1676 nm) data collected from 180 samples of "Tochigi iW1 go" white strawberries and 150 samples of "Tochigi i27 go" red strawberries are investigated. The white strawberry SSC model developed by partial least squares regression (PLSR) in Vis-NIR had a determination coefficient R2p of 0.89 and a root mean square error prediction (RMSEP) of 0.40%; the model developed in NIR showed satisfactory estimation accuracy with an R2p of 0.85 and an RMSEP of 0.43%. These estimation accuracies were comparable to the results of the red strawberry model. Absorption derived from anthocyanin and chlorophyll pigments in white strawberries was observed in the Vis-NIR region. In addition, a dataset consisting of red and white strawberries can be used to predict the pigment-independent SSC. The study explores anaerobic soil disinfection as an alternative to soil fumigants for controlling Verticillium wilt in strawberry crops. For this purpose, two agrowastes close to the strawberry-growing areas of Huelva province were tested as potential amendments for the control of Verticillium wilt: rice bran and residual strawberry extrudate. Furthermore, two application rates were evaluated: 13.50 and 20.00 t/ha for the rice bran and 16.89 and 25.02 t/ha for residual strawberry extrudate. Amended and anaerobically disinfested soils were compared with a non-amended soil under anaerobic conditions, a soil treated with the chemical fungicide metam sodium and an untreated soil. One week before the start of disinfection treatment, these soils were artificially inoculated with 250 microsclerotia/g dry soil of Verticillium dahliae. After disinfestation treatments, pathogens were quantified, and strawberry plants were cropped in a growth chamber to further evaluate Verticillium wilt severity, which was measured with a symptom scale in the same potting soils. Measurements of the anaerobic condition, pH and microbial population densities were performed, and the results showed significant differences between the different amendments. In addition, the treatment with rice bran at 20 t/ha recorded the lowest population density of V. dahliae. Likewise, it was possible to achieve a reduction in foliar disease severity in all amended treatments in similar percentage to those obtained by chemical treatment. These results suggest potential application of this technique for the control of Verticillium wilt in the strawberry-growing area of Huelva, reducing the use of chemical fumigants. To study the polarization reflection characteristics of metal surfaces, a parameter optimization method for the polarization bidirectional reflection distribution function (pBRDF) model of metal surfaces based on the improved strawberry algorithm has been proposed. Firstly, the light scattering characteristics of metal surfaces were analyzed and a multi-parameter pBRDF model was constructed. Then, the working mechanism of the strawberry optimization algorithm was investigated and improved by introducing the chaotic mapping and Levy flight strategy to overcome the shortcomings, such as low convergence rate and easily falling into local optimum. Finally, the method proposed in this paper was validated by simulating open-source data from references and the obtained ones with a self-built experimental platform. The results show that the proposed method outperforms those by nonlinear least squares, particle swarm optimization and the original strawberry algorithm in fitting the detected degree of polarization (DOP) data, indicating the modeling accuracy was significantly improved and better suited to characterize the polarized reflection properties of metal surfaces. In order to obtain a strawberry fruit wine with strong aroma and typical flavor, the non-fermentative yeast, Torulaspora delbrueckii (Td), was sequentially co-fermented with four commercial wine yeasts (D254, K1, F15, and Aq) at a 1:1 inoculation ratio.The effects of the four mixed fermentation combinations on the physicochemical properties, volatile aromatic compounds, and consumer preferences of strawberry wines were evaluated using SPME-GC-MS and a 9-point hedonic scale.The results show that the co-fermentation of Td with different wine yeasts significantly affects the color and aroma components of strawberry wine.Sequential inoculation with Td and Aq or D254 resulted in a wine with a higher redness and saturation.For aroma, a total of 67 volatile compounds, mainly esters, alcohols and acids, were identified in the four strawberry wines.Based on the Venn diagram analysis, 19 aroma compounds were common to all four wine samples, with the Td+D254 combination producing the highest number of aroma compounds (48).The principal component analysis of major aroma compounds (ROAV>0.1) revealed that the volatile active compounds produced by Td+K1 group and Td+D254 group were similar, and closely related to octanoic acid, nonanal, and S-(-) -2-methyl-1-butanol, etc.The consumer preference test showed that the Td+D254 group of strawberry wine had strong fruity, refreshing, and floral aromas, achieving the highest preference score 6.7±1.2.Overall, the findings suggest that the combined fermentation of Td and Saccharomyces cerevisiae D254 has the potential to enhance the aromatic qualities of strawberry wine. AbstractIn strawberry cultivation, a variety of factors influence production and fruit quality. Yield is the most crucial component in fruit production. Chemical fertilizers are typically used to boost yields, however because of their high production costs, negative effects on the environment and human health, organic fertilizers or natural amendments are being utilized instead of chemical fertilizers. The primary goals of substituting chemical fertilizers with bioorganic formulations made from natural sources for fruit production are to lower costs of production and maintain fruit production sustainability. Therefore, to study the impact of these bioorganic formulations the current investigations were conducted in open field conditions under sub humid mid hills conditions of Himachal Pradesh with 12 treatment combinations and three replicate plots. The tested plants were given various combinations of bioorganic formulations [Jeevamrit (JE) and Ghanjeevamrit (GHA)] as a source of nutrients. When compared to conventional practices, statistically significant improvements were discovered in the parameters of yield and nutrient content in the soil and plant. Significant higher yield (21.13 tonnes/ha), soil nutrients and total microbial content was recorded in T4. The results of this study provide support to the recommendation that bioorganic formulations, such as the tested ones, be used on their own or in combination as a substitute for chemical fertilizers in plant nutrition for the production of strawberries. Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is a popular fruit consumed for its desirable flavour, aroma and colour and is considered a functional food due to its antioxidant properties. Noting the need for farmers to increase productivity to meet increasing consumer demands, this study aimed to explore the potential of biostimulants to enhance strawberry cultivation. Herein, a field trial was conducted on a commercial strawberry farm, wherein 1944 strawberry plants received fertigation supplementation with either a control solution (nutrients only) or nutrients combined with one of two biostimulant complexes (BCs). Biostimulant complex 1 (BC1) was composed of molasses, Aloe vera extract and fish-hydrolysate, and biostimulant complex 2 (BC2) was composed of potassium silicate and potassium phosphite. Results indicated that BC1 maintained total yields but increased the sellable proportion and decreased the proportion of waste. In contrast, BC2 increased total yields with both sellable yields and waste increased. No significant changes were observed for indicators of consumer preference (flavour, aroma and fruit colour), however, on-average large increases were observed to indicators of fruit antioxidant properties (phenolic and flavonoid content). Accordingly, these results support the utilisation of biostimulants as a strategy to improve strawberry on-farm productivity without compromising consumer quality measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infantile capillary haemangiomas (strawberry nevus) are common, benign vascular tumours that appear in infancy, typically within the first few weeks to months of life. While many of these haemangiomas undergo spontaneous regression, some may present challenges due to their size, location, or associated complications. Early intervention is crucial to prevent potential disfigurement, functional impairment, or other complications, especially when lesions affect critical areas such as the face, particularly near the eyes or nasal bridge. Propranolol is highly effective in arresting progression and inducing regression of these lesions. The production of berries, one of which is the blueberry, is a topic that has become relevant over time, due to the increase in the popularity of this strawberry. Every day, its use extends to more markets; The fact that their production requires specific geographical conditions and care restricts their supply on the international market. It is noteworthy that Michoacán has the appropriate characteristics for planting and harvesting. Therefore, the objective of this work is to determine the profitability and comparative advantage of Mexican blueberry production in Michoacán for the year 2023 through the Policy Analysis Matrix (MAP). A limitation of the work is the selected period of time, which in this case corresponds to the year 2023. Among the main conclusions, it stands out that with a value of 0.73 and another of 0.41, it can be deduced that blueberry production is a competitive activity and with an advantage for Michoacan producers. The cultivated garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) has a rich history, originating from the hybridization of two wild octoploid strawberry species in the 18th century. Two‐step reconstruction of Fragaria × ananassa through controlled crossings between pre‐improved selections of its parental species is a promising approach for enriching the breeding germplasm of strawberry for wider adaptability. We created a population of reconstructed strawberry by hybridizing elite selections of F. virginiana and F. chiloensis. A replicated field experiment was conducted to evaluate the population's performance for eleven horticulturally important traits, over multiple years. Population structure analyses based on Fana‐50 k SNP array data confirmed pedigree‐based grouping of the progenies into four distinct groups. As complex traits are often influenced by environmental variables, and population structure can lead to spurious associations, we tested multiple genome‐wide association study (GWAS) models. GWAS uncovered 39 quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions for eight traits distributed across twenty chromosomes, including 11 consistent and 28 putative QTLs. Candidate genes for traits including winter survival, flowering time, runnering vigor, and hermaphrodism were identified within the QTL regions. To our knowledge, this study marks the first comprehensive investigation of adaptive and horticultural traits in a large, multi‐familial reconstructed strawberry population using SNP markers. One of the biggest problems that threaten the production of strawberry in the world is the rapid damage and high rate of deterioration after harvest or during cold storage. Therefore, the current study was conducted to investigate the possibility of decreasing the post-harvest damage percentages and increasing the fruit quality of Fragaria x ananassa cv. 'Estavana' after harvest immediately or during the cold storage period. The strawberry plants were dipped for 3 to 5 minutes at 25 α in a solution of 10 L made from distilled water and containing salicylic acid (SA) at 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/L or chitosan (CHIT) at 0, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/L during the period of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 16 days after harvesting. The results showed that the fruit firmness was notably decreased, and the loss and decay percentages were increased by increasing the period of storage, but it could be decreased by using SA or CHIT. Fruit content from soluble solids, total sugars and anthocyanin was significantly increased in the 16 days stored fruits treated with 500 mg/L SA or 50mg/L CHIT. Treating the fresh harvested without or with SA or CHIT increased the fruit content from vitamin C. Empirical researchers often consider a single determinant of labor productivity: speed. This paper asks whether they are neglecting spillovers on output quality. Using high‐frequency data on the speed and quality of strawberry harvesters' work, we offer novel evidence that two distinct workplace policies associated with increases in worker speed lead to similar decreases in the quality of their work. We find that both peer speed and wage changes boost worker speed and lower output quality; 10 percent increases in speed are associated with reductions in quality on the order of 1.5–1.7 percent. The influence of light downconversion films (red, pink and blue films) on leaf physiological features and fruit bioactive compound accumulation was studied in strawberry plants. Red, pink and blue films were able to convert light less utilised by plants into more efficient light wavebands with various possibilities depending on the film characteristics (blue film shifts UV into blue radiation; red film shifts green into red radiation, pink film shifts UV and green into blue and red radiation but to a lesser extent than red film). Indeed, by enhancing the quality of light available for photosynthesis, the utilization of these films holds the potential to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability. All of these light downconversion films resulted in higher plant fresh weight compared to a control colourless (Cnt) film, with plants grown under blue film (UV-to-blue light conversion) showing the most impressive results in terms of total leaf area (+25%), leaf thickness (+10%) and leaf mass per area (+15%). Simultaneously, during the flowering stage, plants under blue film had a higher net photosynthetic rate due to the increase in photosynthetically efficient wavelengths. Moreover, blue film resulted in the highest total phenolic (+40% and +28% than red and pink films, respectively) and flavonoid content (+54%, +84%, +70% than Cnt, red and pink films, respectively) in fruit, with specific effects on targeted phenols, i.e., quercetin, ellagic acid and its glycoside, ellagitannins, and procyanidins. In conclusion, the use of the UV-to-blue conversion light film tested herein represents an innovative solution to increase strawberry yield and promote fruit nutraceutical features, playing a pivotal role in ensuring food quality and security and sustainable agricultural practices. In a study aimed at developing a rapid and nondestructive method for testing the quality of strawberries, spectral data from four strawberry varieties at different ripening stages were collected using a geophysical spectrometer, primarily focusing on the 350–1800 nm band. The spectra were preprocessed using Savitzky–Golay (SG) filtering, and characteristic bands were extracted using Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) analysis. Models for predicting strawberry quality were built using random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), partial least squares (PLS), and Gaussian regression (GPR). The results indicated that the SVM model exhibited relatively high accuracy in predicting anthocyanin, hardness, and soluble solids content in strawberries. For the test set, the SVM model achieved R2 and RMSE values of 0.81, 0.87, and 0.89, and 0.04 mg/g, 0.33 kg/cm2, and 0.72%, respectively. Additionally, the PLS model demonstrated relatively high accuracy in predicting the titratable acid content of strawberries, achieving R2 and RMSE values of 0.85 and 0.03%, respectively, for the test set. We evaluated the effects of fungicides on strawberry powdery mildew (PM) fungus, Podosphaera aphanis, using an electrostatic technique. Thirty-six fungicides were sprayed on single colonies of P. aphanis on leaves of strawberry seedlings (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier). Colony development varied depending on the tested fungicides. Particularly, pyraziflumid, triflumizole, triforine, polyoxin, sodium hydrogen carbonate + copper wettable powder, and flutianil + mepanipyrim were highly effective for reducing colony development. P. aphanis colonies were histochemically stained to observe the morphological characteristics of fungal cells forming normal and abnormal conidiophores. Abnormal conidiophores were classified into seven types based on their morphological and cytological characteristics. Finally, asexual conidia were collected from single P. aphanis colonies on the leaves spray-treated with fungicides using a dielectrically polarized insulator plate (electrostatic spore collector); conidia attracted to the insulator plates were counted using a high-fidelity digital microscope. Most tested fungicides highly inhibited the production and/or germination of asexual conidia. The germination of asexual conidia was observed only in thiophanate-methyl (methyl benzimidazole carbamates fungicides; MBC fungicides) and azoxystrobin (quinone outside inhibitors; QoI fungicides). Assessing with the electrostatic technique, we clarified that P. aphanis has developed resistance to both thiophanate-methyl and azoxystrobin. Thus, the methodological assessment analyzing the colony development and the number of conidia released from single colonies will be helpful information for screening effective fungicides. The species composition of the strawberry anthracnose pathogen population in Saga Prefecture was investigated through phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide sequences of the intergenic regions of the apn2 and MAT1-2–1 genes. Here, 77 out of the 80 Colletotrichum isolates used were classified as C. fructicola, and the remaining three were classified as C. siamense. The 77 C. fructicola isolates were tested for sensitivity to fludioxonil, which is widely used as the main fungicide in rotational programs in Saga Prefecture. High levels of resistance to fludioxonil were observed in 14 C. fructicola isolates tested for sensitivity to mycelial growth in fludioxonil-containing media. Furthermore, two inoculation assays using strawberry seedlings treated with fludioxonil were performed on five of the 14 isolates that showed high levels of resistance. The effectiveness of fludioxonil was significantly low in these isolates. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report fludioxonil resistance in a C. fructicola population.
