1. Multi-Reference UCCSD Variational Quantum Algorithm for Molecular Ground State Energies

Abstract: We implement the Multi-Reference Unitary Coupled Cluster Singles and Doubles (MR-UCCSD) model with a quantum circuit that conserves the particle number to study the ground state energies of LiH, BeH$_2$, and H$_6$. This approach simplifies the MR-UCCSD computation by integrating quantum computing techniques, and reduces its complexity. As a profit of the better MR states, our MR-UCCSD approach satisfies systematically the predefined errors below 10$^{-5}$ Hartree,which is the highest precision of single reference UCCSD approach, along the whole bond length with only hundreds of CNOT gates, and meets satisfactory the requirements of both computational precision and quantum resource reduction., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We report an estimation of the injected mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The composition is inferred from an energy-dependent sky distribution of UHECR events observed by the Telescope Array surface detector by comparing it to the Large Scale Structure of the local Universe. In the case of negligible extra-galactic magnetic fields the results are consistent with a relatively heavy injected composition at E ~ 10 EeV that becomes lighter up to E ~ 100 EeV, while the composition at E > 100 EeV is very heavy. The latter is true even in the presence of highest experimentally allowed extra-galactic magnetic fields, while the composition at lower energies can be light if a strong EGMF is present. Abstract: We use a new method to estimate the injected mass composition of ultrahigh cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The method is based on comparison of the energy-dependent distribution of cosmic ray arrival directions as measured by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) with that calculated in a given putative model of UHECR under the assumption that sources trace the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. As we report in the companion letter, the TA data show large deflections with respect to the LSS which can be explained, assuming small extra-galactic magnetic fields (EGMF), by an intermediate composition changing to a heavy one (iron) in the highest energy bin. Here we show that these results are robust to uncertainties in UHECR injection spectra, the energy scale of the experiment and galactic magnetic fields (GMF). The assumption of weak EGMF, however, strongly affects this interpretation at all but the highest energies E > 100 EeV, where the remarkable isotropy of the data implies a heavy injected composition even in the case of strong EGMF. This result also holds if UHECR sources are as rare as $2 \times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, that is the conservative lower limit for the source number density., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

Abstract: We report on an observation of the difference between northern and southern skies of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray energy spectrum with a significance of ${\sim}8\sigma$. We use measurements from the two largest experiments$\unicode{x2014}$the Telescope Array observing the northern hemisphere and the Pierre Auger Observatory viewing the southern hemisphere. Since the comparison of two measurements from different observatories introduces the issue of possible systematic differences between detectors and analyses, we validate the methodology of the comparison by examining the region of the sky where the apertures of the two observatories overlap. Although the spectra differ in this region, we find that there is only a $1.8\sigma$ difference between the spectrum measurements when anisotropic regions are removed and a fiducial cut in the aperture is applied., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

5. Gamow-Teller strength distributions of 18O and well-deformed nuclei 24,26Mg by deformed QRPA

Abstract: We investigate the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strength distributions of {strongly} deformed nuclei, $^{24,26}$Mg, as well as of $^{18}$O. The calculations are performed within a deformed quasi-particle random phase approximation (DQRPA) which explicitly includes the deformation degree of freedom in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) and RPA calculations. The residual particle-particle ($p-p$) interaction as well as the particle-hole ($p-h$) interaction are extracted from Br\"uckner $G$-matrix calculations. The {residual interaction} dependence of the low-lying GT strength of these strongly deformed nuclei is examined by changing the strength of the residual $p-p$ and $p-h$ interactions. We have found that the low-lying GT peaks are quite similar in energy to those found in {spherical} $N=Z$ and $N=Z+2$ nuclei near magic shells, but the configurations {of $^{24,26}$Mg are largely mixed by} the pairing correlations and the deformation. Our results are compared to the experimental GT $(\pm)$ transition data by ($t$, $^3$He) and ($^{3}$He, $t$) reactions, {and found to reproduce the main features of GT strength distributions., Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures

6. Symmetry Energy from Two-Nucleon Separation Energies of Pb and Ca Isotopes

Abstract: We investigate the symmetry energy in relation with the two-proton and two-neutron separation energies using different nuclear mass data. For this aim, we exploit the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in the continuum (DRHBc), FRDM2012 and AME2020 data. First, we study the two-proton and two-neutron separation energies in Pb and Ca isotopes by subtracting the contribution of Coulomb energy. They show a strong correlation with neutron number as well as with the neutron skin thickness. By taking the relative difference of both separation energies, we derive the symmetry energy from Ca and Pb isotopes. Since the nuclear surface contributes to the symmetry energy, we deduce the volume symmetry energy by subtracting the surface contribution using several mass models. The obtained symmetry energy coefficient, $a_{sym}$, is 20.0 $\sim $ 22.7 MeV for Pb isotopes and 18.7 $\sim$ 19.3 MeV for Ca isotopes from the DRHBc mass table data, while the results from other mass tables are 19.6 $\sim$ 22.1 (20.7 $\sim$ 22.3) MeV for Pb isotopes and 18.9 $\sim$ 19.0 (19.6 $\sim$ 19.7) MeV for Ca isotopes from AME2020 (FRDM2012) data. The volume contribution to the asymmetry coefficient, $a_{sym}^v$, which depends on the ratio of the surface to the volume energy coefficients, $a_s / a_v$, is also provided for each mass model. Since the ratio $a_s / a_v$ is neither determined by nuclear theory, nor by experimental data, we have investigated $a_{sym}^v$ by using the ratio $a_s / a_v$ as a free parameter, and have obtained $a_{sym}^v = $ 27.0 MeV, almost irrespective of nuclear model and isotopic chain, with the ratio $a_s / a_v$ constrained as $a_s / a_v = 1.10 \sim 1.13$.

7. Residual Tensor Force Effects on the Gamow-Teller states in Magic Nuclei, 48Ca, 90Zr, 132Sn, and 208Pb

Abstract: We investigate the tensor force (TF) effect %in the residual interaction on the Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in four magic nuclei, $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb. The TF is taken into account by using the Br\"uckner $G$-matrix theory with the charge-dependent (CD) Bonn potential as the residual interaction of charge-exchange quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA). We found that particle-particle ($p-p$) tensor interaction does not affect the GT transitions because of the closed shell nature in the nuclei, but repulsive particle-hole ($p-h$) residual interaction for the $p-h$ configuration of spin-orbit partners dominates the high-lying giant GT states for all of the nuclei. It is also shown that appreciable GT strengths are shifted to lower energy region by the attractive $p-h$ TF for the same $j_\pi=j_\nu$ configuration, and produce the low-lying GT peak about 2.5 MeV in $^{48}$Ca. Simultaneously, in $^{90}$Zr and $^{132}$Sn, the low-energy strength appears as a lower energy shoulder near the main GT peak. On the other hand, the shift of the low-lying GT state is not seen clearly for $^{208}$Pb because of the strong spin-orbit splitting of high $j$ orbits, which dominates the GT strength.

Abstract: The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Abstract: JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

11. Ground state correlations on ground state densities and total binding energies of 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb

Abstract: Neutron and proton densities of doubly-closed shell nuclei 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb are studied based on a Hartree-Fock model with SAMi, SAMi-J27 and SAMi-T energy density functionals (EDFs). The ground state correlations (GSC) induced by isoscalar and isovector phonons are also evaluated by the second order perturbation theory with a self-consistent random phase approximation (RPA). We found that the interior part of the ground state densities is reduced by the GSC in consistent with the experimental data. On the other hand, the GSC enhances the neutron skin thickness of 48Ca and 208Pb. The effect of GSC on the total binding energy is also evaluated by the quasi-boson approximation. The effect of the tensor interaction is found small on both the density distributions and the binding energies., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

12. Spatial correlation of a particle-hole pair with a repulsive isovector interaction

Abstract: We study the spatial correlation of a particle-hole pair in the isovector channel in $^{56}$Co and $^{40}$K nuclei. To this end, we employ the Hartree-Fock+Tamm-Dancoff approximation with the Skyrme interaction. We find a large concentration of the two-body density at positions where the neutron particle and the proton hole states locate on the opposite side to each other with respect to the core nucleus. This feature originates from a repulsive nature of the isovector residual interaction, which is in stark contrast to the dineutron correlation with an attractive pairing interaction between the valence neutrons discussed e.g., in $^{11}$Li and $^6$He. A possible experimental implication of the repulsive correlation is also discussed., Comment: 5 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: In this paper, we present the first high-speed video observation of a cloud-to-ground lightning flash and its associated downward-directed Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of the event was observed by a high-speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric-field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud-to-ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of -154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma-ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

Abstract: For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. Abstract: We study isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) densities in ${}^{40} \mathrm{Ca}$ in comparison with theoretical densities calculated by Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) models. The charge symmetry breaking and the charge independence breaking forces are introduced to study the effect on the IV density. The effect of isospin mixing in the ground-state density is examined by using the particle-vibration coupling model taking into account the collective IV giant monopole excitation. We show a clear correlations in the IV density and isospin impurity of ${}^{40} \mathrm{Ca}$ within the HF and the particle-vibration coupling model. 17. Ground-based HCN submillimetre measurements in Titan's atmosphere: an intercomparison with Herschel observations

Abstract: The aim of this study is to measure the vertical distribution of HCN on Titan's stratosphere using ground-based submm observations acquired quasi-simultaneously with the Herschel ones. This allows us to perform a consistency check between space and ground-based observations and to build a reference mean HCN vertical profile in Titan's stratosphere. Using APEX and IRAM 30-m, we obtained the spectral emission of HCN (4-3) and (3-2) lines. We applied a line-by-line radiative transfer code to calculate the synthetic spectra of HCN, and a retrieval algorithm based on optimal estimation to retrieve the temperature and HCN distributions. Our derived HCN abundance profiles are consistent with an increase from 40 ppb at ~100 km to 4 ppm at ~200 km, which is an altitude region where the HCN signatures are sensitive. We also demonstrate that the retrieved HCN distribution is sensitive to the data information. Comparisons between our results and the values from Herschel show similar abundance distributions, with maximum differences of 2.5 ppm ranging between 100 and 300 km. These comparisons also allow us to inter-validate both data sets and indicate reliable and consistent measurements. The inferred abundances are also consistent with the distribution in previous observational studies, with the profiles from ALMA, Cassini/CIRS, and SMA (the latest ones below ~230 km). Our HCN profile is also comparable to photochemical models by Krasnopolsky (2014) and Vuitton et al. (2019) below 230 km and consistent with that of Loison et al. (2015) above 250 km. However, it appears to show large differences with respect to the estimates by Loison et al. (2015), Dobrijevic & Loison (2018), and Lora et al. (2018) below 170 km, and by Dobrijevic & Loison (2018) and Lora et al. (2018) above 400 km, although they are similar in shape. Abstract: The isovector and isoscalar components of neutron-proton pairing are investigated in the N=Z unstable nuclei of the fp-shell through the two-nucleon transfer reaction (p,3He) in inverse kinematics. The combination of particle and gamma-ray detection with radioactive beams of 56Ni and 52Fe, produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility, made it possible to carry out this study for the first time in a closed and an open-shell nucleus in the fp-shell. The transfer cross-sections for ground-state to ground-state (J=0+, T=1) and to the first (J=1+, T=0) state were extracted for both cases together with the transfer cross-section ratios σ(0+,T=1)/σ(1+,T=0). They are compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations. The enhancement of the ground-state to ground-state pair transfer cross-section close to mid-shell, in 52Fe, points towards a superfluid phase in the isovector channel. For the “deuteron-like” transfer, very low cross-sections to the first (J=1+, T=0) state were observed both for 56Ni(p,3He) and 52Fe(p,3He) and are related to a strong hindrance of this channel due to spin-orbit effect. No evidence for an isoscalar deuteron-like condensate is observed.

Abstract: We present the first observation by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) of the effect of thunderstorms on the development of cosmic ray single count rate intensity over a 700 km$^{2}$ area. Observations of variations in the secondary low-energy cosmic ray counting rate, using the TASD, allow us to study the electric field inside thunderstorms, on a large scale, as it progresses on top of the 700 km$^{2}$ detector, without dealing with the limitation of narrow exposure in time and space using balloons and aircraft detectors. In this work, variations in the cosmic ray intensity (single count rate) using the TASD, were studied and found to be on average at the $\sim(0.5-1)\%$ and up to 2\% level. These observations were found to be both in excess and in deficit. They were also found to be correlated with lightning in addition to thunderstorms. These variations lasted for tens of minutes; their footprint on the ground ranged from 6 to 24 km in diameter and moved in the same direction as the thunderstorm. With the use of simple electric field models inside the cloud and between cloud to ground, the observed variations in the cosmic ray single count rate were recreated using CORSIKA simulations. Depending on the electric field model used and the direction of the electric field in that model, the electric field magnitude that reproduces the observed low-energy cosmic ray single count rate variations was found to be approximately between 0.2-0.4 GV. This in turn allows us to get a reasonable insight on the electric field and its effect on cosmic ray air showers inside thunderstorms.

Abstract: The Telescope Array Collaboration has observed an excess of events with $E \ge 10^{19.4} ~{\rm eV}$ in the data which is centered at (RA, dec) = ($19^\circ$, $35^\circ$). This is near the center of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster (PPSC). The PPSC is about $70 ~{\rm Mpc}$ distant and is the closest supercluster in the Northern Hemisphere (other than the Virgo supercluster of which we are a part). A Li-Ma oversampling analysis with $20^\circ$-radius circles indicates an excess in the arrival direction of events with a local significance of about 4 standard deviations. The probability of having such excess close to the PPSC by chance is estimated to be 3.5 standard deviations. Abstract: The isovector and isoscalar components of neutron-proton pairing are investigated in the N=Z unstable nuclei of the \textit{fp}-shell through the two-nucleon transfer reaction (p,$^3$He) in inverse kinematics. The combination of particle and gamma-ray detection with radioactive beams of $^{56}$Ni and $^{52}$Fe, produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility, made it possible to carry out this study for the first time in a closed and an open-shell nucleus in the \textit{fp}-shell. The transfer cross-sections for ground-state to ground-state (J=0$^+$,T=1) and to the first (J=1$^+$,T=0) state were extracted for both cases together with the transfer cross-section ratios $\sigma$(0$^+$,T=1) /$\sigma$(1$^+$,T=0). They are compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations. The enhancement of the ground-state to ground-state pair transfer cross-section close to mid-shell, in $^{52}$Fe, points towards a superfluid phase in the isovector channel. For the "deuteron-like" transfer, very low cross-sections to the first (J=1$^+$,T=0) state were observed both for \Ni\phe\, and \Fe\phe\, and are related to a strong hindrance of this channel due to spin-orbit effect. Abstract: Telescope Array (TA) is the largest ultrahigh energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) observatory in the Northern Hemisphere. It explores the origin of UHECRs by measuring their energy spectrum, arrival-direction distribution, and mass composition using a surface detector (SD) array covering approximately 700 km$^2$ and fluorescence detector (FD) stations. TA has found evidence for a cluster of cosmic rays with energies greater than 57 EeV. In order to confirm this evidence with more data, it is necessary to increase the data collection rate.We have begun building an expansion of TA that we call TAx4. In this paper, we explain the motivation, design, technical features, and expected performance of the TAx4 SD. Abstract: Following the announcement of the detection of phosphine (PH$_3$) in the cloud deck of Venus at millimeter wavelengths, we have searched for other possible signatures of this molecule in the infrared range. Since 2012, we have been observing Venus in the thermal infrared at various wavelengths to monitor the behavior of SO$_2$ and H$_2$O at the cloud top. We have identified a spectral interval recorded in March 2015 around 950 cm$^{-1}$ where a PH$_3$ transition is present. From the absence of any feature at this frequency, we derive, on the disk-integrated spectrum, a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit of 5 ppbv for the PH$_3$ mixing ratio, assumed to be constant throughout the atmosphere. This limit is 4 times lower than the disk-integrated mixing ratio derived at millimeter wavelengths. Abstract: In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes, and that the IBPs are produced by a newly-identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark-like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system, and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub-pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub-pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP., Comment: Typo fixed and reference added. Abstract: A formula to evaluate the effects of a general deformation on the Coulomb direct contribution to the energy of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) is presented and studied via a simple yet physical model. The toy model gives a reasonable account of microscopic deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) calculations in a test case, and provides a guidance when predicting unknown IAS energies. Thus, deformed HFB calculations, to predict the IAS energies, are performed for several neutron-deficient medium-mass and heavy nuclei which are now planned to be studied experimentally.

Their conclusion is based on the misconception that the Fourier transform of tensor interaction is difficult or even impossible, so that the Skrme-type tensor interaction was introduced in an unreasonable way. We disagree on their claim. Abstract: The parity-transfer $({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction is presented as a new probe for investigating isovector $0^-$ states in nuclei. The properties of $0^-$ states provide a stringent test of the threshold density for pion condensation in nuclear matter. Utilizing a $0^+ \rightarrow 0^-$ transition in the projectile, the parity-transfer reaction transfers an internal parity to a target nucleus, resulting in a unique sensitivity to unnatural-parity states. Consequently, the selectivity for $0^-$ states is higher than in other reactions employed to date. The probe was applied to a study of the $0^-$ states in ${}^{12}{\rm B}$ via the ${}^{12}{\rm C}({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction at $247~{\rm MeV/u}$. The excitation energy spectra were deduced by detecting the ${}^{15}{\rm O}+p$ pair produced in the decay of the ${}^{16}{\rm F}$ ejectile. A known $0^-$ state at $E_x = 9.3~{\rm MeV}$ was observed with an unprecedentedly high signal-to-noise ratio. The data also revealed new candidates of $0^-$ states at $E_x=6.6 \pm 0.4$ and $14.8 \pm 0.3~{\rm MeV}$. Abstract: Motivated by the detection of a significant dipole structure in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays above 8 EeV reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger), we search for a large-scale anisotropy using data collected with the surface detector array of the Telescope Array Experiment (TA). With 11 years of TA data, a dipole structure in a projection of the right ascension is fitted with an amplitude of 3.3+- 1.9% and a phase of 131 +- 33 degrees. The corresponding 99% confidence-level upper limit on the amplitude is 7.3%. 30. Study of Charge Radii with Neural Networks

Abstract: A feed-forward neural network model is trained to calculate the nuclear charge radii. The model trained with input data set of proton and neutron number $Z,N$, the electric quadrupole transition strength $B(E2)$ from the first excited 2$^+$ state to the ground state, together with the symmetry energy. The model reproduces well not only the isotope dependence of charge radii, but also the kinks of charge radii at the neutron magic numbers $N=82$ for Sn and Sm isotopes, and also $N=126$ for Pb isotopes. The important role of $B(E2)$ value is pointed out to reproduce the kink of the isotope dependence of charge radii in these nuclei. Moreover, with the inclusion of the symmetry energy term in the inputs, the charge radii of Ca isotopes are well reproduced. This result suggests a new correlation between the symmetry energy and charge radii of Ca isotopes. Abstract: Ultra high energy cosmic rays provide the highest known energy source in the universe to measure proton cross sections. Though conditions for collecting such data are less controlled than an accelerator environment, current generation cosmic ray observatories have large enough exposures to collect significant statistics for a reliable measurement for energies above what can be attained in the lab. Cosmic ray measurements of cross section use atmospheric calorimetry to measure depth of air shower maximum ($X_{\mathrm{max}}$), which is related to the primary particle's energy and mass. The tail of the $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distribution is assumed to be dominated by showers generated by protons, allowing measurement of the inelastic proton-air cross section. In this work the proton-air inelastic cross section measurement, $\sigma^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$, using data observed by Telescope Array's Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors and surface detector array in hybrid mode is presented. $\sigma^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$ is observed to be $520.1 \pm 35.8$[Stat.] $^{+25.0}_{-40}$[Sys.]~mb at $\sqrt{s} = 73$ TeV. The total proton-proton cross section is subsequently inferred from Glauber formalism and is found to be $\sigma^{\mathrm{tot}}_{\mathrm{pp}} = 139.4 ^{+23.4}_{-21.3}$ [Stat.]$ ^{+15.0}_{-24.0}$[Sys.]~mb.

Abstract: Evidence for a large-scale supergalactic cosmic ray multiplet (arrival directions correlated with energy) structure is reported for ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) energies above 10$^{19}$ eV using seven years of data from the Telescope Array (TA) surface detector and updated to 10 years. Previous energy-position correlation studies have made assumptions regarding magnetic field shapes and strength, and UHECR composition. Here the assumption tested is that, since the supergalactic plane is a fit to the average matter density of the local Large Scale Structure (LSS), UHECR sources and intervening extragalactic magnetic fields are correlated with this plane. This supergalactic deflection hypothesis is tested by the entire field-of-view (FOV) behavior of the strength of intermediate-scale energy-angle correlations. These multiplets are measured in spherical cap section bins (wedges) of the FOV to account for coherent and random magnetic fields. The structure found is consistent with supergalactic deflection, the previously published energy spectrum anisotropy results of TA (the hotspot and coldspot), and toy-model simulations of a supergalactic magnetic sheet. The seven year data post-trial significance of this supergalactic structure of multiplets appearing by chance, on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be 4.2$\sigma$. The ten years of data post-trial significance is 4.1$\sigma$. Furthermore, the starburst galaxy M82 is shown to be a possible source of the TA Hotspot, and an estimate of the supergalactic magnetic field using UHECR measurements is presented.

Abstract: The arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays appear to be approximately isotropically distributed over the whole sky, but the last-generation UHECR detector arrays, the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger) and the Telescope Array (TA), have detected thousands of events, allowing us to study small deviations from isotropy. So far, Auger has detected a large-scale anisotropy consistent with a $\sim 6.5\%$ dipole moment in the distribution of cosmic rays with $E > 8$~EeV, and both collaborations have reported indications for smaller-scale anisotropies at higher energies. On the other hand, neither array has full-sky coverage, the Auger field of view being limited to declinations $\delta < +45^\circ$ and the TA one to $\delta > -16^\circ$. Searches for anisotropies with full-sky coverage thus require combining data from both arrays. A working group with members from both collaborations has been established for this task. Since even a minor systematic error in the energy determinations at either of the arrays could result in a sizeable spurious anisotropy along the north--south axis, we devised a method to cross-calibrate the energy scales of the two experiments with respect to each other by using events in a declination band within the intersection of their fields of view. 36. Quenching factor of Gamow-Teller and spin dipole giant resonances

Abstract: Gamow-Teller (GT) and spin-dipole (SD) strength distributions of four doubly magic nuclei $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are studied by the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus random phase approximation (RPA) method. The Skyrme forces SAMi and SAMi-T without/with tensor interactions are adopted in our calculations. The calculated strengths are compared with available experimental data. The RPA results of GT and SD strengths of all four nuclei show fine agreement with observed GT and SD resonances in energy. A small GT peak below the main GT resonance is better described by the Skyrme interaction SAMi-T with the tensor terms. The quenching factors for GT and SD are extracted from the comparisons between RPA results and experimental strengths. Abstract: EUSO-TA is a ground-based florescence detector built to validate the design of an ultra-high energy cosmic ray fluorescence detector to be operated in space. EUSO-TA detected the first air shower events with the technology developed within the JEM-EUSO program. It operates at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Utah, USA. With the external trigger provided by the Black Rock Mesa fluorescence detectors of Telescope Array (TA-FDs), EUSO-TA observed nine ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and several laser events from the Central Laser Facility of Telescope Array and portable lasers like the JEM-EUSO Global Light System prototype. The reconstruction parameters of the cosmic ray events which crossed the EUSO-TA field of view (both detected and not detected by EUSO-TA), were provided by the Telescope Array Collaboration. As the TA-FDs have a wider field of view than EUSO-TA ($\sim$30 times larger), they allow the cosmic ray energy reconstruction based on the observation of most of the extensive air-shower profiles, including the shower maximum, while EUSO-TA only observes a portion of the showers, usually far from the maximum. For this reason, the energy of the cosmic rays corresponding to the EUSO-TA signals appear lower than the actual ones. Abstract: We study double charge-exchange phonon states in neutron-rich nuclei, in particular the double isobaric analog states and the double Gamow-Teller excitations, induced by the double isospin operator $\sum_{i,j=1}^At_-(i) t_-(j)$ and spin-isospin operator $\sum_{i,j=1}^A{\sigma}(i) t_-(i){\sigma}(j) t_-(j)$, respectively. We employ quartic commutator relations to evaluate the average energies $E_{\rm DIAS} - 2E_{\rm IAS}$ and $E_{\rm DGTR}-E_{\rm DIAS} - 2(E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS})$, and conventional double commutator relations to evaluate the average energies of $E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS}$ and $E_{\rm IAS}$. We have found that the corrections due to quartic commutators follow the approximate laws: $E_{\rm DIAS} - 2E_{\rm IAS}\approx \frac{3}{2} A^{-1/3}$ MeV and $E_{\rm DGTR}-E_{\rm DIAS} - 2(E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS})\approx 16 A^{-1}$ MeV. While the former is dominated by direct Coulomb effects, since Coulomb exchange cancels out to some extent with isospin symmetry breaking contributions originated form the nuclear strong force, the latter is sensitive to the difference in strength between the spin and spin-isospin chanels of the strong interaction.

Abstract: Despite deflections by Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields, the distribution of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) over the celestial sphere remains a most promising observable for the identification of their sources. Thanks to a large number of detected events over the past years, a large-scale anisotropy at energies above 8 EeV has been identified, and there are also indications from the Telescope Array and Pierre Auger Collaborations of deviations from isotropy at intermediate angular scales (about 20 degrees) at the highest energies. In this contribution, we map the flux of UHECRs over the full sky at energies beyond each of two major features in the UHECR spectrum -- the ankle and the flux suppression --, and we derive limits for anisotropy on different angular scales in the two energy regimes. In particular, full-sky coverage enables constraints on low-order multipole moments without assumptions about the strength of higher-order multipoles. Following previous efforts from the two Collaborations, we build full-sky maps accounting for the relative exposure of the arrays and differences in the energy normalizations. The procedure relies on cross-calibrating the UHECR fluxes reconstructed in the declination band around the celestial equator covered by both observatories. We present full-sky maps at energies above 10 EeV and 50 EeV, using the largest datasets shared across UHECR collaborations to date. Abstract: High-energy neutrinos are expected to be produced by the interaction of accelerated particles near the acceleration sites. For this reason, it is interesting to search for correlation in the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and HE neutrinos. We present here the results of a search for correlations between UHECR events measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array and high-energy neutrino candidate events from IceCube and ANTARES. We perform a cross-correlation analysis, where the angular separation between the arrival directions of UHECRs and neutrinos is scanned. Abstract: The surface detector (SD) of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment allows one to indirectly detect photons with energies of order $10^{18}$ eV and higher and to separate photons from the cosmic-ray background. In this paper we present the results of a blind search for point sources of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons in the Northern sky using the TA SD data. The photon-induced extensive air showers (EAS) are separated from the hadron-induced EAS background by means of a multivariate classifier based upon 16 parameters that characterize the air shower events. No significant evidence for the photon point sources is found. The upper limits are set on the flux of photons from each particular direction in the sky within the TA field of view, according to the experiment's angular resolution for photons. Average 95% C.L. upper limits for the point-source flux of photons with energies greater than $10^{18}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20}$ eV are $0.094$, $0.029$, $0.010$, $0.0073$ and $0.0058$ km$^{-2}$yr$^{-1}$ respectively. For the energies higher than $10^{18.5}$ eV, the photon point-source limits are set for the first time. Abstract: We derive a simple formula for the width of a multi-channel resonance state. To this end, we use a deformed square-well potential and solve the coupled-channels equations. We obtain the $S$-matrix in the Breit-Wigner form, from which partial widths can be extracted. Abstract: We present the results of the search for ultra-high-energy photons with nine years of data from the Telescope Array surface detector. A multivariate classifier is built upon 16 reconstructed parameters of the extensive air shower. These parameters are related to the curvature and the width of the shower front, the steepness of the lateral distribution function, and the timing parameters of the waveforms sensitive to the shower muon content. A total number of two photon candidates found in the search is fully compatible with the expected background. The $95\%\,$CL limits on the diffuse flux of the photons with energies greater than $10^{18.0}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19.0}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20.0}$ eV are set at the level of $0.067$, $0.012$, $0.0036$, $0.0013$, $0.0013~\mbox{km}^{-2}\mbox{yr}^{-1}\mbox{sr}^{-1}$ correspondingly., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: The neutron density distributions and neutron skin thicknesses in $^{40,48}$Ca are determined from the angular distributions of the cross sections and analyzing powers of polarized proton elastic scattering at $E_p = 295$ MeV. Based on the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation with the density-dependent effective $NN$ interaction, the experimental data is successfully analyzed, providing precise information of neutron and proton density profiles of $^{40,48}$Ca with small uncertainties. The extracted neutron and proton density distributions give neutron skin thicknesses in $^{40,48}$Ca for $-0.010^{+0.022}_{-0.024}$ fm and $0.168^{+0.025}_{-0.028}$ fm, respectively. The results of the density profiles and the neutron skin thickness in $^{48}$Ca are directly compared with the {\it ab initio} coupled-cluster calculations with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, as well as relativistic and non-relativistic energy density functional theories., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Collaboration (Auger) recently reported a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies above 39 EeV and the flux pattern of 23 nearby starburst galaxies (SBGs). In this Letter, we tested the same hypothesis using cosmic rays detected by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) in the 9-year period from May 2008 to May 2017. Unlike the Auger analysis, we did not optimize the parameter values but kept them fixed to the best-fit values found by Auger, namely 9.7% for the anisotropic fraction of cosmic rays assumed to originate from the SBGs in the list and 12.9{\deg} for the angular scale of the correlations. The energy threshold we adopted is 43 EeV, corresponding to 39 EeV in Auger when taking into account the energy-scale difference between two experiments. We find that the TA data is compatible with isotropy to within 1.1{\sigma} and with the Auger result to within 1.4{\sigma}, meaning that it is not capable to discriminate between these two hypotheses., Comment: More accurate title, fixed an inconsistency in the declination range used, with a few figures slightly changing as a result, other minor revisions

Abstract: The results on ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) mass composition obtained with the Telescope Array surface detector are presented. The analysis employs the boosted decision tree (BDT) multivariate analysis built upon 14 observables related to both the properties of the shower front and the lateral distribution function. The multivariate classifier is trained with Monte-Carlo sets of events induced by the primary protons and iron. An average atomic mass of UHECR is presented for energies $10^{18.0}-10^{20.0}\ \mbox{eV}$. The average atomic mass of primary particles shows no significant energy dependence and corresponds to $\langle \ln A \rangle = 2.0 \pm 0.1 (stat.) \pm 0.44 (syst.)$. The result is compared to the mass composition obtained by the Telescope Array with $\mbox{X}_{\mbox{max}}$ technique along with the results of other experiments. Abstract: EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25$^{th}$ of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Finally, we present a first reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks relative to the detector., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We report on the in-beam gamma spectroscopy of $^{102}$Sn and $^{100}$Cd produced via two-neutron removal from carbon and CH$_2$ targets at about 150 MeV/nucleon beam energy. New transitions assigned to the decay of a second 2$^+$ excited state at 2470(60) keV in $^{102}$Sn were observed. Two-neutron removal cross sections from $^{104}$Sn and $^{102}$Cd have been extracted. The enhanced cross section to the 2$^+_2$ in $^{102}$Sn populated via the $(p,p2n)$ reaction is traced back to an increase of shell-model structure overlaps, consistent with the hypothesis that the proton-induced two-deeply-bound-nucleon removal mechanism is of direct nature.
