Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.Results: The eR&DCI was completed by 155 respondents (doctors n=38 (24.52%), nurses n=79 (50.96%) and allied health professionals (AHPs) n=38 (24.52%)). The response rate varied by professional group: responses were received from 79 out of 700 nurses (11%); 38 out of 132 doctors (29%) and 38 out of 76 AHPs (50%). Index scores demonstrated a positive research culture within the multidisciplinary workforce. Survey responses demonstrated differences between the professions related to research training and engagement in formal research activities.Conclusion: This is the first study to assess the feasibility of assessing the strength of an organization’s multidisciplinary workforce research and development (R&D) culture by surveying that workforce using the eR&DCI. We converted the index to “Online Surveys” and successfully administered it to the entire multidisciplinary workforce in the Children’s Hospital. We met our criteria for feasibility: ability to administer the survey and a response rate comparable with similar studies. Uptake could have been increased by also offering the option of the paper-based index for self-administration. Results of the survey are informing delivery of the research strategy in the Children’s Hospital. Abstract

1$T$-TaSe$_2$ is widely believed to host a Mott metal-insulator transition in the charge density wave (CDW) phase according to the spectroscopic observation of a band gap that extends across all momentum space. Previous investigations inferred that the occurrence of the Mott phase is limited to the surface only of bulk specimens, but recent analysis on thin samples revealed that the Mott-like behavior, observed in the monolayer, is rapidly suppressed with increasing thickness. Here, we report combined time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of 1$T$-TaSe$_2$. Our experimental results confirm the existence of a state above $E_F$, previously ascribed to the upper Hubbard band, and an overall band gap of $\sim 0.7$ eV at $\overline{\Gamma}$. However, supported by density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the origin of this state and the gap rests on band structure modifications induced by the CDW phase alone, without the need for Mott correlation effects., Comment: Accepted by PRL

Abstract

The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) study of the transient electronic structure and ultrafast carrier dynamics in the single- and bilayer TMDCs MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ on three different substrates: Au(111), Ag(111) and graphene/SiC. The photoexcited quasiparticle bandgaps are observed to vary over the range of 1.9-2.3 eV between our systems. The transient conduction band signals decay on a sub-100 fs timescale on the metals, signifying an efficient removal of photoinduced carriers into the bulk metallic states. On graphene, we instead observe two timescales on the order of 200 fs and 50 ps, respectively, for the conduction band decay in MoS$_2$. These multiple timescales are explained by Auger recombination involving MoS$_2$ and in-gap defect states. In bilayer TMDCs on metals we observe a complex redistribution of excited holes along the valence band that is substantially affected by interactions with the continuum of bulk metallic states., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We employ time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the spin- and valley-selective photoexcitation and dynamics of free carriers at the K and K' points in singly-oriented single layer WS$_2$/Au(111). Our results reveal that in the valence band maximum an ultimate valley polarization of free holes of 84$\,$% can be achieved upon excitation with circularly polarized light at room temperature. Notably, we observe a significantly smaller valley polarization for the photoexcited free electrons in the conduction band minimum. Clear differences in the carrier dynamics between electrons and holes imply intervalley scattering processes into dark states being responsible for the efficient depolarization of the excited electron population., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In Portsmouth, Sudanese women - who have arrived to the city in the last three decades - are re/making home in difficult spaces. Moving through both structural and social violences they are cartographers of im/possible life, whose experiences as 'Muslim' and as 'migrant' women elucidate and interrogate the conditions of belonging for those made 'Other' in Britain. Far from being abstract signifiers of difference, they are women who are embedded in particular local spaces, architectures and infra/structures which impose upon their possibilities of re/mapping home in the city. They also move through these spaces inhabiting particular bodies, which are marked and read in ways that rub against their own understandings of self and belonging; and which often contradict one another. Just as these spaces - both corporeal and urban - are sites of domination, so they also become vital spaces for negotiating and renegotiating the conditions of life in Portsmouth itself. Bodies, homes, high streets, mosques, church halls, WhatsApp and more are neither sites of total domination nor of bare resistance, but rather complicate binary narratives of power and agency as women's everyday practices on-the-ground become a critical optic through which to analyse geographies of im/mobility, in/visibility, dis/orientation and un/belonging. In this thesis, I map the everyday trails of complex and ambiguous landmarks which simultaneously provide Sudanese women with openings and closures for remaking liveable life in Britain, as an always already 'Othered' subject of the British city and nation. Mapping, as such, weaves throughout the composite analyses of the thesis as a visual, oral, haptic, affective and sensorial lens which not only elucidates geography as emerging through interlocking experiences of gender, race and class but also as embedded in particular material contexts, politics and histories of post/coloniality. This work draws upon sixteen months of feminist ethnographic research with twenty-three Sudanese women and informal interviews with a further eight women, along with participation in wider 'Sudanese Community' events. Through methods of walking, participant observation, mental mapping, photography and more, I piece together ecologies of power in Sudanese women's everyday lives in Portsmouth. My resulting claims are twofold. Firstly, that inhabitation is a crucial optic for critical feminist migration/diaspora studies, one which conceptualises power as both embodied and embedded, and which as such provides more nuanced accounts of diaspora, migration, difference, power, agency and resistance. Secondly, that a focus on inhabitation itself intervenes in the common-sense spatiality and temporality of 'the colonial', illuminating the ways in which Portsmouth in the present tense is a colonial space-time. Along with attention to the colonial, this also demands that race - as gender, and class - be made central to any account of migration or 'migrant' (or 'Muslim migrant') life. I pursue these claims through a conceptual toolbox which brings together critical feminist, Black feminist, socialist, post/colonial, queer and decolonial scholarship. I also do so through the original analytic spaces of Portsmouth and of Sudanese women, both marginalised sites of enquiry within wider discussions of migration and diaspora in Britain.

Abstract

VS2 is a challenging material to prepare stoichiometrically in the bulk, and the single layer has not been successfully isolated before now. Here we report the first realization of single-layer VS2, which we have prepared epitaxially with high quality on Au(111) in the octahedral (1T) structure. We find that we can deplete the VS2 lattice of S by annealing in vacuum so as to create an entirely new two-dimensional compound that has no bulk analogue. The transition is reversible upon annealing in an H2S gas atmosphere. We report the structural properties of both the stoichiometric and S-depleted compounds on the basis of low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffraction, and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

ObjectivesTo assess the reliability and the minimal clinically important differences (MCID) for FVC% predicted in the Scleroderma Lung Study I and II.MethodsUsing data from SLS I and II (N=300), we evaluated the test-retest reliability for FVC% predicted (FVC%; screening vs. baseline) using intra-class correlation (ICC). MCID estimates at 12 months were calculated in the pooled cohort (SLS-I and II) using 2 anchors: Transition Dyspnea Index (≥change of 1.5 units for improvement and worsening, respectively) and the SF-36 Health Transition question: "Compared to one year ago, how would you rate your health in general now?", where "somewhat better" or "somewhat worse" were defined as the MCID estimates. We next assessed the association of MCID estimates for improvement and worsening of FVC% with patient reported outcomes (PROs) and computer-assisted quantitation of extent of fibrosis (QLF) and of total ILD (QILD) on HRCT.ResultsReliability of FVC%, assessed at a mean of 34 days, was 0.93 for the pooled cohort. The MCID estimates for the pooled cohort at 12 months for FVC% improvement ranged from 3.0 % to 5.3% and for worsening from -3.0% to -3.3%. FVC% improvement by ≥MCID was associated with either statistically significant or numerical improvements in some PROs, QILD, and QLF, while FVC% worsening ≥MCID was associated with statistically significant or numerical worsening of PROs, QILD, and QLF.ConclusionFVC% has acceptable test-retest reliability, and we have provided the MCID estimates for FVC% in SSc-ILD based changes at 12 months from baseline in two clinical trials. Abstract

Buruli ulcer, a chronic subcutaneous infection caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, is increasing in prevalence in southeastern Australia. Possums are a local wildlife reservoir for M. ulcerans and, although mosquitoes have been implicated in transmission, it remains unclear how humans acquire infection. We conducted extensive field survey analyses of M. ulcerans prevalence among mosquitoes in the Mornington Peninsula region of southeastern Australia. PCR screening of trapped mosquitoes revealed a significant association between M. ulcerans and Aedes notoscriptus. Spatial scanning statistics revealed overlap between clusters of M. ulcerans-positive Ae. notoscriptus, M. ulcerans-positive possum excreta and Buruli ulcer cases, and metabarcoding analyses showed individual mosquitoes had fed on humans and possums. Bacterial genomic analysis confirmed shared single-nucleotide-polymorphism profiles for M. ulcerans detected in mosquitoes, possum excreta and humans. These findings indicate Ae. notoscriptus probably transmit M. ulcerans in southeastern Australia and highlight mosquito control as a Buruli ulcer prevention measure.

Abstract

Obesity and other metabolic variables are associated with abnormal brain structural volumes and cognitive dysfunction in HIV-uninfected populations. Since individuals with HIV infection on combined antiretroviral therapy (CART) often have systemic metabolic abnormalities and changes in brain morphology and function, we examined associations among brain volumes and metabolic factors in the multisite CNS HIV AntiRetroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) cohort, cross-sectional study of 222 HIV-infected individuals. Metabolic variables included body mass index (BMI), total blood cholesterol (C), low- and high-density lipoprotein C (LDL-C and HDL-C), blood pressure, random blood glucose, and diabetes. MRI measured volumes of cerebral white matter, abnormal white matter, cortical and subcortical gray matter, and ventricular and sulcal CSF. Multiple linear regression models allowed us to examine metabolic variables separately and in combination to predict each regional volume. Greater BMI was associated with smaller cortical gray and larger white matter volumes. Higher total cholesterol (C) levels were associated with smaller cortex volumes; higher LDL-C was associated with larger cerebral white matter volumes, while higher HDL-C levels were associated with larger sulci. Higher blood glucose levels and diabetes were associated with more abnormal white matter. Multiple atherogenic metabolic factors contribute to regional brain volumes in HIV-infected, CART-treated patients, reflecting associations similar to those found in HIV-uninfected individuals. These risk factors may accelerate cerebral atherosclerosis and consequent brain alterations and cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract

Over the past two decades, homelessness has become more visible, and with it are increased demands for law enforcement to minimise the visibility of people experiencing homelessness, and manage, or ultimately remove, local encampments. While scholarship exists on police responses to homelessness, the role that other security actors, such as municipal bylaw officers, play in managing and regulating homelessness is largely unknown. In this paper, we explore municipal bylaw officers' perceptions of their roles and responsibilities related to homelessness in Ontario, Canada. Our analysis reveals how bylaw officers have become important players in the security governance of homelessness. We demonstrate how bylaw officers' policies, which focus on the regulation of space, are loosely coupled with, or disconnected from, their frontline activities, which require the regulation of people. This loose coupling situates bylaw officers in a perceived regulatory grey zone, requiring them to use discretionary solutions informed by their subjective experiences to govern people experiencing homelessness. Abstract

Background: Social isolation has been suggested to increase the risk to develop cognitive decline. However, our knowledge on causality and neurobiological underpinnings is still limited.Methods: In this preregistered analysis, we tested the impact of social isolation on central features of brain and cognitive ageing using a longitudinal population-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study. We assayed 1992 cognitively healthy participants (50-82years old, 921women) at baseline and 1409 participants after~6y follow-up.Results: We found baseline social isolation and change in social isolation to be associated with smaller volumes of the hippocampus and clusters of reduced cortical thickness. Furthermore, poorer cognitive functions (memory, processing speed, executive functions) were linked to greater social isolation, too.Conclusions: Combining advanced neuroimaging outcomes with prevalent lifestyle characteristics from a well-characterized population of middle- to older aged adults, we provide evidence that social isolation contributes to human brain atrophy and cognitive decline. Within-subject effects of social isolation were similar to between-subject effects, indicating an opportunity to reduce dementia risk by promoting social networks.

Abstract

Tidal marshes store large amounts of organic carbon in their soils. Field data quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks provide an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers, and policy-makers working towards the protection, restoration, and valuation of these ecosystems. We collated a global dataset of tidal marsh soil organic carbon (MarSOC) from 99 studies that includes location, soil depth, site name, dry bulk density, SOC, and/or soil organic matter (SOM). The MarSOC dataset includes 17,454 data points from 2,329 unique locations, and 29 countries. We generated a general transfer function for the conversion of SOM to SOC. Using this data we estimated a median (± median absolute deviation) value of 79.2 ± 38.1 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 30 cm and 231 ± 134 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 1 m of tidal marsh soils globally. This data can serve as a basis for future work, and may contribute to incorporation of tidal marsh ecosystems into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies.

40. Ethnic inequalities in COVID-19 vaccine uptake and comparison to seasonal influenza vaccine uptake in Greater Manchester, UK: A cohort study

Abstract

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccine uptake is lower amongst most minority ethnic groups compared to the White British group in England, despite higher COVID-19 mortality rates. Here, we add to existing evidence by estimating inequalities for 16 minority ethnic groups, examining ethnic inequalities within population subgroups, and comparing the magnitudes of ethnic inequalities in COVID-19 vaccine uptake to those for routine seasonal influenza vaccine uptake. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Greater Manchester Care Record, which contains de-identified electronic health record data for the population of Greater Manchester, England. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate ethnic inequalities in time to COVID-19 vaccination amongst people eligible for vaccination on health or age (50+ years) criteria between 1 December 2020 and 18 April 2021 (138 days of follow-up). We included vaccination with any approved COVID-19 vaccine, and analysed first-dose vaccination only. We compared inequalities between COVID-19 and influenza vaccine uptake adjusting by age group and clinical risk, and used subgroup analysis to identify populations where inequalities were widest. The majority of individuals (871,231; 79.24%) were White British. The largest minority ethnic groups were Pakistani (50,268; 4.75%), 'other White background' (43,195; 3.93%), 'other ethnic group' (34,568; 3.14%), and Black African (18,802; 1.71%). In total, 83.64% (919,636/1,099,503) of eligible individuals received a COVID-19 vaccine. Uptake was lower compared to the White British group for 15 of 16 minority ethnic groups, with particularly wide inequalities amongst the groups 'other Black background' (hazard ratio [HR] 0.42, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.44), Black African (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.44), Arab (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.48), and Black Caribbean (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.45).
