Abstract

The design, simulation, fabrication, calibration, and performance of the GlueX Start Counter detector is described. The Start Counter was designed to operate at integrated rates of up to 9 MHz with a timing resolution in the range of 500 to 825 ps (FWHM). The Start Counter provides excellent solid angle coverage, a high degree of segmentation for background rejection, and can be utilized in the level 1 trigger for the experiment. It consists of a cylindrical array of 30 thin scintillators with pointed ends that bend towards the beam line at the downstream end. Magnetic field insensitive silicon photomultiplier detectors were used as the light sensors.

Abstract

The mangrove swamp rice production system (MSRPS) in West Africa faces significant challenges in soil, water, and salinity management, making rice production highly vulnerable to variations in the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of rainfall, which are exacerbated by climate change. This study’s results can provide the initial basis for co-developing strategies with farmers aiming to contribute to the biophysical characterization of the MSRPS, in particular: (i) estimate the water-harvesting efficiency (WLef) of the plots in the north and south of Guinea Bissau (GB); (ii) characterize the unevenness of the bottom of the plots, which leads to salinization spots; and (iii) create soil consistency maps to provide farmers with a tool to prioritize sites with optimal conditions for tillage. The research was conducted between 2021 and 2023 in the study site of Cafine-Cafal in the south and Elalab in the north of GB. Systematic soil sampling in a grid was designed to quantify the soil consistency and plot/ridge areas were determined. Linear models were developed to predict biophysical parameters (e.g., effective planting areas and water-logging depths) and geostatistics were used to create soil consistency maps for each study site. The results show precipitation water-harvesting efficiencies of 15% and 16% for the southern and northern regions, respectively. Furthermore, the plasticity limits of 18.6% for Elalab and 35.5% for Cafine-Cafal show the most appropriate times to start tillage in specific areas of the paddies. This study provides information on the efficient management of tillage and freshwater conservation, providing MSRPS farmers with useful tools to counteract the effects caused by salinity and rainfall variability.

6. Factors That Influence the Success of First-Generation, Low Income Latino Community College Students

Abstract

This doctoral dissertation studied the various factors that influence the success of first generation, low income, Latino, community college students in transferring to four-year colleges and universities. The participants in this study were eight first-generation, low-income Latino male, EOPS community college students. This qualitative inquiry used a descriptive case study methodology and explored the actual and lived experiences of these students through a brief questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Validation Theory (Rendon) and Community Cultural Wealth Theory (Yosso) were used to analyze the participants' stories who have overcome many personal, family and financial hardships to achieve their goal of a college education and who have successfully navigated the transfer admissions process to a four-year college or university. Significant findings indicated that family, faculty/mentors, peers/classmates, ganas/determination, individual/personal attributes, giving back to their family & community and becoming positive role models were the foremost factors that influenced their success in college completion amongst other things. These factors helped the participants successfully navigate the transfer admission to a four-year college or university. El objetivo de nuestra investigación fue determinar relación de la Publicidad engañosa con el deber de idoneidad respecto a la compra de productos electrodomésticos, registrados en Indecopi – Tarapoto, 2020. La investigación tuvo como marco metodológico de tipo de investigación aplicada básica descriptiva, de diseño no experimental transversal correlacional. Se empleó como técnicas e instrumento de investigación la guía de observación documental. La población fue referida a la totalidad de los expedientes administrativos por publicidad engañosa vulnerando el deber de idoneidad en el año 2020, siendo un total de 40 expedientes y la muestra fue comprendida con la totalidad de la población. Del cual, se tuvo como resultado, que producto de la publicidad engañosa, existe vulneración al principio de idoneidad, respecto de la compra de productos electrodomésticos en Indecopi – Tarapoto, 2020. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between misleading advertising and the duty of suitability with respect to the purchase of household appliances, registered in Indecopi - Tarapoto, 2020. The methodological framework of the research was a descriptive basic applied research and a non-experimental cross-sectional correlational design. The documentary observation guide was used as a research technique and instrument. The population was referred the totality of the administrative files for misleading advertising violating the duty of suitability for the year 2020, making a total of 40 files and the sample was comprised with the totality of the population. The result was that as a consequence of misleading advertising, there is a violation of the principle of suitability, with respect to the purchase of household appliances at Indecopi - Tarapoto, 2020.

Abstract

Taking advantage of the C2-symmetry of the antitumor naturally occurring disorazole B1molecule, a symmetrical total synthesis was devised with a monomeric advanced intermediate as the key building block, whose three-step conversion to the natural product allowed for an expeditious entry to this family of compounds. Application of the developed synthetic strategies and methods provided a series of designed analogues of disorazole B1, whose biological evaluation led to the identification of a number of potent antitumor agents and the first structure–activity relationships (SARs) within this class of compounds. Specifically, the substitutions of the epoxide units and lactone moieties with cyclopropyl and lactam structural motifs, respectively, were found to be tolerable for biological activities and beneficial with regard to chemical stability.

Abstract

Comprised of a large collection of structurally diverse molecules, the prostaglandins exhibit a wide range of biological properties. Among them are Δ12-prostaglandin J2(Δ12-PGJ2) and Δ12-prostaglandin J3(Δ12-PGJ3), whose unusual structural motifs and potent cytotoxicities present unique opportunities for chemical and biological investigations. Herein, we report a short olefin-metathesis-based total synthesis of Δ12-PGJ2and its application to the construction of a series of designed analogues possessing monomeric, dimeric, trimeric, and tetrameric macrocyclic lactones consisting of units of this prostaglandin. Biological evaluation of these analogues led to interesting structure–activity relationships and trends and the discovery of a number of more potent antitumor agents than their parent naturally occurring molecules.

Abstract

To help meet the requirement described in an amendment to the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Act of 2008, Sandia National Laboratories' Security Systems and Technology Center was tasked by NNSA to develop a plan that could be used to help prioritize security expenditures utilizing methods that are objective and repeatable. NNSA asked Sandia to develop a method that takes into account different types of proposed projects not easily compared within the nuclear weapons complex (e.g. policy driven, sustainment, research and development (R&D), vulnerability based, or replacement). The plan is intended to assist the NNSA in managing its technology investments during the next five-fiscal year period. This paper describes the process developed to create the NNSA Physical Security Technology Management Plan. Through the implementation of the process, NNSA's security technology investment decisions will have a more consistent enterprise focus and application, improved sharing of information of physical security technologies, and more cost-effective utilization of technologies. The process includes the following five steps: (1) Review Principles, (2) Collect Information, (3) Analyze Information, (4) Develop Plan, (5) Implement Plan. Utilizing the process can help NNSA identify its physical security technology investment options, prioritize the options through a data-driven process based on risk management principles, and effectively communicate its decisions to all stakeholders. Moreover, employing a predetermined methodology for technology investments can aid NNSA in achieving its goals of transforming into a leaner, more efficient and less costly enterprise. Abstract

Taking advantage of the C 2 -symmetry of the antitumor naturally occurring disorazole B 1 molecule, a symmetrical total synthesis was devised with a monomeric advanced intermediate as the key building block, whose three-step conversion to the natural product allowed for an expeditious entry to this family of compounds. Application of the developed synthetic strategies and methods provided a series of designed analogues of disorazole B 1 , whose biological evaluation led to the identification of a number of potent antitumor agents and the first structure-activity relationships (SARs) within this class of compounds. Specifically, the substitutions of the epoxide units and lactone moieties with cyclopropyl and lactam structural motifs, respectively, were found to be tolerable for biological activities and beneficial with regard to chemical stability.

Abstract

Comprised of a large collection of structurally diverse molecules, the prostaglandins exhibit a wide range of biological properties. Among them are Δ 12 -prostaglandin J 2 (Δ 12 -PGJ 2 ) and Δ 12 -prostaglandin J 3 (Δ 12 -PGJ 3 ), whose unusual structural motifs and potent cytotoxicities present unique opportunities for chemical and biological investigations. Herein, we report a short olefin-metathesis-based total synthesis of Δ 12 -PGJ 2 and its application to the construction of a series of designed analogues possessing monomeric, dimeric, trimeric, and tetrameric macrocyclic lactones consisting of units of this prostaglandin. Biological evaluation of these analogues led to interesting structure-activity relationships and trends and the discovery of a number of more potent antitumor agents than their parent naturally occurring molecules.
