Adhesive capsulitis, also known as frozen shoulder, is a condition characterized by shoulder pain and limited motion due to inflammation of the synovial lining and capsule. It is more common in middle-aged women and the non-dominant arm. Risk factors include prolonged immobilization, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and other conditions. This article reports a case of adhesive capsulitis caused by follicular lymphoma in a woman with no cardiovascular risk factors. The patient experienced shoulder pain and limited motion, and imaging tests revealed bone marrow abnormalities. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of follicular lymphoma. Treatment included shoulder hydrodistension and chemotherapy. The article emphasizes the importance of considering malignancies as a potential cause of adhesive capsulitis, especially in atypical cases, and highlights the need for early diagnosis to improve prognosis. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its individual components among manufacturing workers and their relationship to the Brazilian Workers’ Food Program (WFP).Methods: It was a prospective, cross-sectional, two-stage survey comparative of manufacturing workers from companies adherent and non-adherent to the WFP stratified by sector of activity and company size. The workers were interviewed in the workplace, and data on waist circumference (WC), blood pressure, and 12-hours fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum triglycerides (TG), and total and HDL-cholesterol were obtained. Mixed effects multilevel regression was used to compare WFP and non-WFP groups separately in each sex. All subjects gave written informed consent.Results: The survey included 332 workers from 16 WFP companies and 344 workers from 17 non-WFP companies. The general prevalence of MetS, according to IDF/AHA/NHLBI criteria, was high but not statistically different between sexes (39.8% in females versus 28.5% for males, p=0.16). Statistically significant differences were found between sexes in the prevalence of individual components: WC (77.8% in females versus 38.3% in males, p=0.002), TG (27.3% in females versus 40.8% in males, p=0.07), and HDL-C (52.2% in females versus 43.1% in males, p=0.05). Among males, MetS prevalence was significantly higher in the WFP group (33.0% versus 23.9%, p=0.008), and, in the individual components, the WFP group had higher prevalence of increased WC (47.0% versus 29.4%, p< 0.001) and elevated FBG (8.9% versus 6.3%, p< 0.001), as well as greater average levels of TG, HDL-C and FBG. Among female workers, no statistically significant differences between groups were observed in MetS prevalence and its individual components, but WFP female worker presented lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure.Conclusion: In a low-income population, male manufacturing workers participating in a food assistance program are at increased risk of MetS, an effect that was not identified among female workers.Keywords: public policy, workers, cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic syndrome, food insecurity

Abstract Background Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is widely recognized as an essential element in the triggering of innate immunity, binding pathogen-associated molecules such as Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and in initiating a cascade of pro-inflammatory events. Evidence for TLR4 expression in non-immune cells, including pancreatic β-cells, has been shown, but, the functional role of TLR4 in the physiology of human pancreatic β-cells is still to be clearly established. We investigated whether TLR4 is present in β-cells purified from freshly isolated human islets and confirmed the results using MIN6 mouse insulinoma cells, by analyzing the effects of TLR4 expression on cell viability and insulin homeostasis. Results CD11b positive macrophages were practically absent from isolated human islets obtained from non-diabetic brain-dead donors, and TLR4 mRNA and cell surface expression were restricted to β-cells. A significant loss of cell viability was observed in these β-cells indicating a possible relationship with TLR4 expression. Monitoring gene expression in β-cells exposed for 48h to the prototypical TLR4 ligand LPS showed a concentration-dependent increase in TLR4 and CD14 transcripts and decreased insulin content and secretion. TLR4-positive MIN6 cells were also LPS-responsive, increasing TLR4 and CD14 mRNA levels and decreasing cell viability and insulin content. Conclusions Taken together, our data indicate a novel function for TLR4 as a molecule capable of altering homeostasis of pancreatic β-cells.

The risk of hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia is a critical concern in thyroid surgery. Preserving parathyroid gland vascularization during surgery is essential for effective prevention. Preoperative and postoperative management, including calcium and Vitamin D supplementation, is paramount. Measurement of parathyroid hormone levels after surgery is the best predictor of hypoparathyroidism. Itraconazole (ITZ) is widely prescribed for the treatment of mycosis such as Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). However, it's related to toxicity and serious adverse events, such as Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). The objective is to describe a patient with PCM and CHF secondary to ITZ. Male, 50-years old, was diagnosed with chronic adult PCM and started ITZ 200 mg 12/12 h. After 2-months, acute CHF began without previous-heart disease. The electrocardiogram showed changes in ventricular repolarization and left anterior superior divisional block. Echocardiogram: slight reduction in left ventricular systolic function and ejection fraction of 51%. ITZ was replaced by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. After a week, there was remission of symptoms. Despite thousands of patients around the world received ITZ, few cases of CHF were reported. It's dose dependent and improves when the drug is discontinuing. ITZ has negative inotropic effect and probably causes mitochondrial dysfunction. Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates have been reported as an important nosocomial multidrug resistance pathogen. In the present study, we investigated antimicrobial susceptibility and the colistin-resistance rates, their genetic determinants and clonality among clinical E. cloacae complex isolates from different Brazilian states. For this, an initial screening was carried out on 94 clinical isolates of E. clocacae complex received between 2016 and 2018 by LAPIH-FIOCRUZ, using EMB plates containing 4 μg/mL of colistin, followed MIC determination, resulting in the selection of 26 colistin-resistant isolates from the complex. The presence of carbapenemases encoding genes (bla KPC , bla NDM and bla OXA-48 ), plasmidial genes for resistance to polymyxins (mcr1-9) and mutations in chromosomal genes (pmrA, pmrB, phoP and phoQ) described as associated with resistance to polymyxin were screened by PCR and DNA sequencing. Finally, the hsp60 gene was sequenced to identify species of the E. cloacae complex and genetic diversity was evaluated by PFGE and MLST. The results have shown that among 94 E. cloacae complex isolates, 19 (20.2%) were colistin-resistant. The resistant strains exhibited MIC ranging from 4 to 128 µg / mL and E. hormaechei subsp. steigerwaltii was the prevalent species in the complex (31,6%), followed by E. cloacae subsp. cloacae (26,3%). The antimicrobials with the highest susceptibility rate were gentamicin (21%) and tigecycline (26%). Carbapenemases encoding genes (bla KPC n = 5, bla NDM n = 1) were detected in 6 isolates and mcr-9 in one. Among the modifications found in PmrA, PmrB, PhoP e PhoQ (two-component regulatory system), only the S175I substitution in PmrB found in E. cloacae subsp cloacae isolates were considered deleterious (according to the prediction of PROVEAN). By PFGE, 13 profiles were found among E. cloacae complex isolates, with EcD the most frequent. Furthermore, by MLST 10 ST's, and 1 new ST, were identified in E. cloacae. In conclusion, no prevalence of clones or association among carbapenemase production and polymyxin resistance was found between the E. cloacae. Thereby, the results suggest that the increased polymyxin-resistance is related to the selective pressure exerted by the indiscriminate use in hospitals. Lastly, this study highlights the urgent need to elucidate the mechanism involved in the resistance to polymyxin in the E. cloacae complex and the development of measures to control and prevent infections caused by these multiresistant bacteria., (© 2024. Indoor house dust is considered an important human exposure route to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which has raised concern about their environmental persistence and toxicity properties. In this study, eight PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, and -209) were determined in house dust from two cities with different socio-demographic characteristics from Brazil, examining possible relationships with factors that potentially influence contamination (population density, economic activities, presence of electronic equipment, and so on) and also estimating the risk of human exposure through oral ingestion and dermal contact. The Σ 8 PBDE concentration in Sorocaba city ranged between 380 and 4269 ng/g dw, while in Itapetininga city ranged from 106 to 1000 ng/g dw. In both regions, BDE-209 was the most abundantly found congener, followed by BDE-99. House dust from Sorocaba presented significantly greater concentrations of BDE-183 and BDE-209 than Itapetininga. Regarding risk exposure assessment, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of PBDEs was much lower than their respective reference doses (RfDs) in all pathways estimated (non-dietary ingestion and dermal contact). This study provided valuable data to improve the knowledge about the presence and exposure to PBDEs in Brazilian house dust in comparison to other developing countries and the need to control environmental pollution and protect human health., (© 2024. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide, being the third most commonly diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Despite the progress in screening, early diagnosis, and treatment, approximately 20%-25% of CRC patients still present with metastatic disease at the time of their initial diagnosis. Furthermore, the burden of disease is still expected to increase, especially in individuals younger than 50 years old, among whom early-onset CRC incidence has been increasing. Screening and early detection are pivotal to improve CRC-related outcomes. It is well established that CRC screening not only reduces incidence, but also decreases deaths from CRC. Diverse screening strategies have proven effective in decreasing both CRC incidence and mortality, though variations in efficacy have been reported across the literature. However, uncertainties persist regarding the optimal screening method, age intervals and periodicity. Moreover, adherence to CRC screening remains globally low. In recent years, emerging technologies, notably artificial intelligence, and non-invasive biomarkers, have been developed to overcome these barriers. However, controversy exists over the actual impact of some of the new discoveries on CRC-related outcomes and how to effectively integrate them into daily practice. In this review, we aim to cover the current evidence surrounding CRC screening. Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have long been associated with health risk behaviors, but they are poorly studied in Brazilian university students., Objective: To estimate the prevalence of ACEs and investigate their association with sociodemographic data, health risk factors and self-related health in a sample of university students., Participants and Setting: A cross-sectional study conducted with 546 students from a Brazilian public university., Method: The self-reported 10-ACE Study questionnaire (ACE-Q) and sociodemographic information (age, sex, family income), health risk factors (body mass index, physical exercise, alcohol and tobacco use) and self-related health were assessed. Chi-square Test and multivariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between the cumulative occurrence of ACE (ACE ≥4) and the studied factors., Results: Of the 546 participants, 464 responded to all ACE-Q questions; 74.4% reported at least one ACE, and 13.1 % reported four or more. Lower family income (OR = 2.02; 95%CI = 1.13-3.61; p = 0.01) and self-related poor health (OR = 2.29; 95%CI = 1.28-4.08; p = 0.00) were associated with the occurrence of ACE ≥4., Conclusion: Most students reported at least one ACE, while a minority reported ≥4 ACEs associated with lower family income and poor self-health. This study evaluated clinical features of individuals with long COVID (5-8 months after diagnosis) who reported sleep and memory problems (62 cases) compared to those without (52 controls). Both groups had a similar mean age (41 vs. 39 years). Around 86% of the participants were non-hospitalized at the time of infection, and none of them were vaccinated at that point. Subsequently, both cases and controls received the vaccine; however, the vaccination rates differed significantly between the groups (30.7% vs. 51.0%). Cases and controls had similar rates of symptoms at acute COVID phase. However, cases were more likely to experience coryza, dyspnea, headache, and nausea/vomiting during long COVID. Regarding new-onset symptoms in long COVID, 12.9% of cases had dyspnea, and 14.5% experienced nausea/vomiting, whereas in the control group there were only 1.9% and 0.0%, respectively. Cases also had a significantly higher prevalence of persistent headache (22.6% vs. 7.7%), and dyspnea (12.9% vs. 0.0). In addition, cases also showed an increased rate of mental health complaints: disability in daily activities (45.2% vs. 9.6%; P  < 0.001); concentration/sustained attention difficulties (74.2% vs. 9.6%; P  < 0.001); anxiety-Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item scale (GAD-2) ≥ 3 (66.1% vs. 34.6%; P  = 0.0013); and "post-COVID sadness" (82.3% vs. 40.4%; P  < 0.001). We observed a significant correlation between sadness and anxiety in cases, which was not observed in controls (P=0.0212; Spearman correlation test). Furthermore, the frequency of concomitant sadness and anxiety was markedly higher in cases compared to controls (59.7% vs. 19.2%) ( P  < 0.0001; Mann-Whitney test). These findings highlight a noteworthy association between sadness and anxiety specifically in cases. In conclusion, our data identified concurrent psychological phenotypes in individuals experiencing sleep and memory disturbances during long COVID. This strengthens the existing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 causes widespread brain pathology with interconnected phenotypic clusters. A 23-year-old male from Brazil presented with bright red hematochezia. Proctological examination revealed grade II internal hemorrhoids, but flexible sigmoidoscopy uncovered a 6 mm-pedunculated polyp in the sigmoid colon, which was found to result from inflammatory reaction to Schistosoma mansoni egg deposition. The patient had no signs of portal hypertension and was successfully treated with praziquantel. This case underscores a rare presentation of chronic intestinal schistosomiasis and emphasizes the role of early diagnosis in preventing severe hepatic sequelae of chronic Schistosoma infection.

Background: Facial nerve dysfunction can be a devastating trouble for post-parotidectomy patients., Objective: To assess rehabilitation outcomes concerning patients with post-parotidectomy facial nerve dysfunction, comparing benign versus malignant neoplasms., Methods: Prospective study enrolling adults who underwent parotidectomy with facial nerve sparing between 2016 and 2020. The Modified Sunnybrook System (mS-FGS) was used for facial assessments. Physiotherapy began on the first post-operative day with a tailored program of facial exercises based on Neuromuscular Retraining, to be performed at home 3 times/day. From the first outpatient consultation, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation was added to the treatment of cases with moderate or severe facial dysfunctions., Results: Benign and malignant groups had a statistically significant improvement in mS-FGS (p < 0.001 and p = 0.005, respectively). There was no significant difference between groups regarding treatment duration or number of physiotherapy sessions performed. The history of previous parotidectomy resulted in more severe initial dysfunctions and worse outcome. Age over 60 years and initially more severe dysfunctions impacted the outcome., Conclusion: Patients with benign and malignant parotid neoplasms had significant and equivalent improvement in postoperative facial dysfunction following an early tailored physiotherapy program, with no significant difference in the final facial score, treatment duration, or number of sessions required.

The effect of the use of Nilo tilapia filleting residues in the production of pâtés with the addition of oregano essential oil stored for 90 days at 4 °C was evaluated. For that, 5 treatments were performed as follows: TSA-control treatment; TES with the addition of sodium erythorbate; and formulation TOE1 with 600 ppm oregano essential oil; TOE2 with 1000 ppm essential oil; and TOE3 with 1400 ppm essential oil. The pâtés showed adequate technological and physicochemical characteristics and microbiological counts within the legislation standards. No significant differences were observed in the luminosity of the pâté formulations during storage, and the addition of oil contributed to the increase in a* values and stability of b* values. Regarding the lipid and protein oxidation, TOE3 showed lower values at the end of the shelf-life. The addition of essential oil did not affect the hardness and cohesiveness of the products. The fatty acids in greater amounts in the samples were linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. The analysis of biogenic amines indicated that only the treatments with the highest amounts of sodium erythorbate (TES and TOE1) showed losses of spermidine. It was observed that decreasing the inclusion of sodium erythorbate and increasing the inclusion of oregano essential oil resulted in a drop in cadaverine values. The secretome present in the conditioned medium (CM) of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is a promising tool to be used in therapies to promote bone regeneration. Considering the high osteogenic potential of the bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP-9), we hypothesized that the secretome of MSCs overexpressing BMP-9 (MSCs BMP-9 ) enhances the osteoblast differentiation of MSCs and the bone formation in calvarial defects. CM of either MSCs BMP-9 (CM-MSCs BMP-9 ) or MSCs without BMP-9 overexpression (CM-MSCs VPR ) were obtained at different periods. As the CM-MSCs BMP-9 generated after 1 h presented the highest BMP-9 concentration, CM-MSCs BMP-9 and CM-MSCs VPR were collected at this time point and used to culture MSCs and to be injected into mouse calvarial defects. The CM-MSCs BMP-9 enhanced the osteoblast differentiation of MSC by upregulating RUNX2, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteopontin protein expression, and ALP activity, compared with CM-MSCs VPR . The CM-MSCs BMP-9 also enhanced the bone repair of mouse calvarial defects, increasing bone volume, bone volume/total volume, bone surface, and trabecular number compared with untreated defects and defects treated with CM-MSCs VPR or even with MSCs BMP-9 themselves. Background:  Facial nerve dysfunction is the principal postoperative complication related to parotidectomy., Objective:  To test the hypothesis that the modified Sunnybrook Facial Grading System (mS-FGS) is superior to the original S-FGS in the assessment of facial nerve function following parotidectomy., Methods:  Prospective, longitudinal study evaluating patients with primary or metastatic parotid neoplasms undergoing parotidectomy with facial nerve-sparing between 2016 and 2020. The subjects were assessed twice, on the first postoperative day and at the first outpatient evaluation, 20-30 days post-surgery. Facial assessments were performed using the original and modified (plus showing the lower teeth) versions of the Sunnybrook System and documented by pictures and video recordings. Intra- and inter-rater agreements regarding the assessment of the new expression were analyzed., Results:  101 patients were enrolled. In both steps, the results from the mS-FGS were significantly lower (p < 0.001). Subjects with a history of previous parotidectomy and those who underwent neck dissection had more severe facial nerve impairment. The mandibular marginal branch was the most frequently injured, affecting 68.3% of the patients on the first postoperative day and 52.5% on the first outpatient evaluation. Twenty patients (19.8%) presented an exclusive marginal mandibular branch lesion. The inter-rater agreement of the new expression assessment ranged from substantial to almost perfect. Manganese (Mn) is one of the essential mineral micronutrients most demanded by cacao. Cadmium (Cd) is highly toxic to plants and other living beings. There are indications that Mn can interact with Cd and mitigate its toxicity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the action of Mn on the toxic effect of Cd in young plants of the CCN 51 cacao genotype, subjected to different doses of Mn, Cd, and Mn+Cd in soil, through physiological, biochemical, molecular, and micromorphological and ultrastructural changes. High soil Mn doses favored the maintenance and performance of adequate photosynthetic processes in cacao. However, high doses of Cd and Mn+Cd in soil promoted damage to photosynthesis, alterations in oxidative metabolism, and the uptake, transport, and accumulation of Cd in roots and leaves. In addition, high Cd concentrations in roots and leaf tissues caused irreversible damage to the cell ultrastructure, compromising cell function and leading to programmed cell death. However, there was a mitigation of Cd toxicity when cacao was grown in soils with low Cd doses and in the presence of Mn. Thus, damage to the root and leaf tissues of cacao caused by Cd uptake from contaminated soils can be attenuated or mitigated by the presence of high Mn doses in soil., (© 2023. Adolescence is a complex period of human development in which young people are susceptible to unhealthy behaviors, such as physical inactivity and an unbalanced diet. This study aimed to analyze the effects of 12 weeks of multi-disciplinary family and individual intervention on cardiometabolic risk parameters in overweight and obese adolescents and compare sub-groups, considering possible differences between sexes (males vs. females vs. intervention approach). Forty-three adolescents (13.73 ± 2.46 years old) of both sexes were divided into two groups: family group (FG) ( n = 21; 14.24 ± 2.61 years old) and individual group (IG) ( n = 22; 13.23 ± 2.27 years old). The following parameters were evaluated: anthropometry (body weight, height, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), calculation of body mass index (BMI), and waist-hip ratio (WHR)), body composition (fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), fat-free mass (FFM), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), body fat percentage (BF), and visceral fat), biochemical measures (fasting glucose, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoproteins (LDL-c), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL-c)), and the measurement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) before and after the interventions. The multi-disciplinary interventions occurred for 12 weeks (three days a week lasting 1 h and 30 min, in which 30 min were dedicated to theoretical interventions (nutrition: nutritional education and psychology: psychoeducation) and 1 h to physical exercises. A time effect was observed for LM, FFM, SMM, FM, and HDL-c, with higher values after intervention and a significant decrease for FM, BF, visceral fat, fasting glucose, TG, TC, LDL-c, and DBP ( p < 0.05). However, no group, sub-group, or interaction effects were observed when comparing FG, IG, or sexes ( p > 0.05). The responses of the present study show that both multi-disciplinary approaches (family and individual) promoted improvement in the body composition indicators, biochemical markers, and DBP of overweight and obese adolescents independently of the intervention group. Given this finding, health professionals, families, and adolescents could choose the type of intervention based on their preferences.

Background: Dynapenia is a risk factor of mortality. Therefore, the development of low-cost and easy-to-apply tools is essential to optimize the health surveillance actions of older people., Objectives: To compare the time spent on habitual physical activity (HPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) among dynapenic and non-dynapenic older adults and ascertain the predictive ability of these behaviors on outcome., Design and Setting: A cross-sectional population epidemiological survey was conducted involving 208 older adults., Methods: HPA and SB were quantified using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and dynapenia was identified by handgrip strength (women: 18.37 kgf; men: 26.75 kgf)., Results: The prevalence was 24.50%. In both sexes, dynapenic individuals reported a HPA median time of 70.00 minutes/week (min/wk), while non-dynapenic women and men reported HPA median times of 240.00 and 280.00 min/wk, respectively (P < 0.05). For SB among dynapenic individuals, a median of 388.75 min/day was observed in women and 428.57 min/d in men. In contrast, non-dynapenic women and men had 291.42 and 274.28 min/day in SB (P < 0.05), respectively. The best cutoff HPA to discriminate the outcome was 150.00 min/wk in women (sensitivity: 73.30%; specificity: 60.67%) and 140.00 min/wk in men (sensitivity, 71.43%; specificity, 61.54%). The best cutoff SB was 381.43 min/day in women (sensitivity, 53.30%; specificity, 84.80%) and 351.43 min/day in men (sensitivity, 71.43%; specificity, 73.85%)., Conclusion: Older individuals with dynapenia spent less time on HPA and more time in SB. Furthermore, HPA was found to be a better discriminator of dynapenic individuals, and SB better discriminated non-dynapenic individuals.

Cytokinesis is the last step of cell division, when one cell physically divides into two cells. Cytokinesis is driven by an equatorial contractile ring and signals from antiparallel microtubule bundles (the central spindle) that form between the two masses of segregating chromosomes. Bundling of central spindle microtubules is essential for cytokinesis in cultured cells. Using a temperature-sensitive mutant of SPD-1, the homolog of the microtubule bundler PRC1, we demonstrate that SPD-1 is required for robust cytokinesis in the Caenorhabditis elegans early embryo. SPD-1 inhibition results in broadening of the contractile ring, creating an elongated intercellular bridge between sister cells at the last stages of ring constriction that fails to seal. Moreover, depleting anillin/ANI-1 in SPD-1-inhibited cells results in myosin loss from the contractile ring during the second half of furrow ingression, which in turn results in furrow regression and cytokinesis failure. Introduction: Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), an important biomarker of exposure to anticholinesterases, varies its activity according to the intensity and duration of exposure to these agents. Their normal values may vary in different populations. It is important to determine the reference values for the local population, mostly black/brown., Objective: The objective was to investigate the baseline values of BChE activity in a sample of the Salvador city population (Bahia, Brazil), evaluating the sociodemographic characteristics., Method: A descriptive, quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach was carried out in 304 voluntary and healthy blood donors. BChE activity was determined using the integrated chemical system Dimension RxLMax and analyses of sociodemographic characteristics were performed., Results: For the 304 participants (18 to 67 years old), BChE activity values range were 7.4 to 19.8 U/mL (male) and 6.0 to 19.6 U/mL (female), without significant inter-racial differences (p = 0.986; Mann-Whitney). The participates were predominantly black (44.7%) and brown (40.5%), with higher levels of BchE activity in males (64.8%) (p-value = 0.01) than females (35.2%). There was no relationship between alcohol use and lower BChE activity (p = 0.725, Mann-Whitney). Women using hormonal contraceptives had a median activity 9.2% lower than the non-users., Conclusion: Despite the high miscegenation and predominance of the black race in Salvador, contrary to what was expected, the sample did not show statistically significant intra-racial differences in BChE activity, being able to use the same reference values currently used, observing factors such as sex, use of contraceptives, and drinking alcohol., (© 2022. Microorganisms can interfere with meat quality, being a public health problem. The aim of this study was to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from utensils of a bovine slaughterhouse and to evaluate the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the essential oil of Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary). Samples of surfaces and utensils used during slaughter in the northwest of the state of Paraná, Brazil were collected. After isolation and differentiation of the isolates by the coagulase test, the antimicrobial susceptibility test, Staphylococcus aureus identification and mecA gene research were performed. The study for biofilm production was carried out by the method of adhesion in borosilicate tube and by adhesion in polystyrene plate. Subsequently, the inhibitory activity of the R. officinalis essential oil and its ability to inhibit biofilm were investigated. Twenty-two of the samples collected were identified as coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and five as coagulase-positive Staphylococcus. There was resistance to all antibiotics tested, with clindamycin (33.33%) and rifampicin (29.6%) showing the highest rate. None of the samples was confirmed as Staphylococcus aureus or for the presence of the mecA resistance gene. The essential oil inhibited the growth of 48% of the isolates at a concentration of 16,000 µg/mL. Of these isolates, 33% were positive for biofilm production and this biofilm was also inhibited by the essential oil. A large multi-institutional case series of laryngeal cancer (LC) T4a was carried out, including 134 cases treated with open partial horizontal laryngectomies (OPHL) +/- post-operative radiation therapy (PORT). The goal was to understand better whether OPHL can be included among the viable options in selected pT4a LC patients who refuse a standard approach, represented by total laryngectomy (TL) + PORT. All 134 patients underwent OPHL type I (supraglottic), II (supracricoid), or III (supratracheal), according to the European Laryngological Society Classification. Comparing clinical and pathological stages showed pT up-staging in 105 cases (78.4%) and pN up-staging in 19 patients (11.4%). Five-year data on overall survival, disease-specific survival, disease-free survival, freedom from laryngectomy, and laryngo-esophageal dysfunction-free survival (rate of patients surviving without a local recurrence or requiring total laryngectomy and without a feeding tube or a tracheostomy) were, respectively, 82.1%, 89.8%, 75.7%, 89.7%, and 78.3%. Overall, complications were observed in 22 cases (16.4%). Sequelae were observed in 28 patients (20.9%). No patients died during the postoperative period. This large series highlights the good onco-functional results of low-volume pT4a laryngeal tumors, with minimal or absent cartilage destruction, treated with OPHLs. The level of standardization of the indication for OPHL should allow consideration of OPHL as a valid therapeutic option in cases where the patient refuses total laryngectomy or non-surgical protocols with concomitant chemo-radiotherapy.

Carbapenems are considered last-resort antibiotics for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Although the main mechanism of carbapenem-resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the loss of OprD porin, carbapenemases continue to be a problem worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of phenotypic tests (Carba NP, Blue Carba, and mCIM/eCIM) for detection of carbapenemase-producing Pseudomonas spp. in Brazil. One hundred twenty-seven Pseudomonas spp. clinical isolates from different Brazilian states were submitted to phenotypic and molecular carbapenemase detection. A total of 90 carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa and 5 Pseudomonas putida (35, bla VIM-2 ; 17, bla SPM-1 ; 2, bla IMP-10 ; 1, bla VIM-24 ; 1, bla NDM-1 ; 39, bla KPC-2 ). The phenotypic Carba NP, Blue Carba, and mCIM/eCIM showed sensitivity of 94.7%, 93.6%, and 93.6%, and specificity of 90.6%, 100%, and 96.8%, respectively. However, only the Carba NP presented the highest sensitivity and showed the ability in differentiating the carbapenemases between class A and class B using EDTA. Blue Carba failed to detect most of the class B carbapenemases, having the worst performance using EDTA. Our results show changes in the epidemiology of the spread of carbapenemases and the importance of their detection by phenotypic and genotypic tests. Such, it is essential to use analytical tools that faithfully detect bacterial resistance in vitro in a simple, sensitive, rapid, and cost-effective way. Gallium and indium octahedral complexes with isoniazid derivative ligands were successfully prepared. The ligands, isonicotinoyl benzoylacetone (H 2 L 1 ) and 4-chlorobenzoylacetone isonicotinoyl hydrazone (H 2 L 2 ), and their respective coordination compounds with gallium and indium [GaL 1 (HL 1 )] (GaL 1 ), [GaL 2 (HL 2 )] (GaL 2 ), [InL 1 (HL 1 )] (InL 1 ) and [InL 2 (HL 2 )] (InL 2 ) were investigated by NMR, ESI-MS, UV-Vis, IR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis. In vitro interaction studies with human serum albumin (HSA) evidenced a moderate affinity of all complexes with HSA through spontaneous hydrophobic interactions. The greatest suppression of HSA fluorescence was caused by GaL 2 and InL 2 , which was associated to the higher lipophilicity of H 2 L 2 . In vitro interaction studies with CT-DNA indicated weak interactions of the biomolecule with all complexes. Cytotoxicity assays with MCF-7 (breast carcinoma), PC-3 (prostate carcinoma) and RWPE-1 (healthy human prostate epithelial) cell lines showed that complexes with H 2 L 2 are more active and selective against MCF-7, with the greatest cytotoxicity observed for InL 2 (IC 50  = 10.34 ± 1.69 μM). H 2 L 1 and H 2 L 2 were labelled with gallium-67, and it was verified that 67 GaL 2 has a greater lipophilicity than 67 GaL 1 , as well as higher stability in human serum or in the presence of apo-transferrin. Cellular uptake assays with 67 GaL 1 and 67 GaL 2 evidenced that the H 2 L 2 -containing radiocomplex has a higher accumulation in MCF-7 and PC-3 cells than the non-halogenated congener 67 GaL 1 . Pseudomonas aeruginosa and species of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-baumanii complex are multiresistant intrahospital opportunistic pathogens, able to acquire carbapenemases and produce outbreaks with high morbidity and mortality. Pseudomonas putida has also emerged with similar characteristics. The aim of this research was to characterize the Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) detected by surveillance in Paraguay in the first 5 years of their circulation in hospitals. The coexistence of KPC and OXA-type carbapenemases was also investigated. 70 MBL-producing strains from inpatients were detected from clinical samples and rectal swab from 11 hospitals. The strains were identified by manual, automated, and molecular methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility was studied by Kirby-Bauer and automated methods, while colistin susceptibility was determined by broth macrodilution. MBLs were investigated by synergy with EDTA against carbapenems and PCR, and their variants by sequencing. KPC and OXA-carbapenemases were investigated by PCR. Clonality was studied by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The results demonstrated the circulation of bla VIM-2 (60%), bla NDM-1 (36%), and bla IMP-18 (4%). The MBL-producing species were P. putida (45.7%), P. aeruginosa (17.2%), A. baumannii (24.3%), A. pittii (5.7%), A. nosocomialis, (4.3%) A. haemolyticus (1.4%), and A. bereziniae (1.4%). PFGE analysis showed one dominant clone for A. baumannii, a predominant clone for half of the strains of P. aeruginosa, and a polyclonal spread for P. putida. Encounters between flowers and invertebrates are key events for the functioning of tropical forests. Assessing the structure of networks composed of the interactions between those partners leads to a better understanding of ecosystem functioning and the effects of environmental factors on ecological processes. Gathering such data is, however, costly and time-consuming, especially in the highly diverse tropics. We aimed to provide a comprehensive repository of available flower-invertebrate interaction information for the Atlantic Forest, a South American tropical forest domain. Data were obtained from published works and "gray literature," such as theses and dissertations, as well as self-reports by co-authors. The data set has ~18,000 interaction records forming 482 networks, each containing between one and 1061 interaction links. Each network was sampled for about 200 h or less, with few exceptions. A total of 641 plant genera within 136 different families and 39 orders were reported, with the most abundant and rich families being Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Rubiaceae. Invertebrates interacting with these plants were all arthropods from 10 orders, 129 families, and 581 genera, comprising 2419 morphotypes (including 988 named species). Hymenoptera was the most abundant and diverse order, with at least six times more records than the second-ranked order (Lepidoptera). The complete data set shows Hymenoptera interacting with all plant orders and also shows Diptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera to be important nodes. Among plants, Asterales and Fabales had the highest number of interactions. The best sampled environment was forest (~8000 records), followed by pastures and crops. Savanna, grasslands, and urban environments (among others) were also reported, indicating a wide range of approaches dedicated to collecting flower-invertebrate interaction data in the Atlantic Forest domain. Nevertheless, most reported data were from forest understory or lower strata, indicating a knowledge gap about flower-invertebrate interactions at the canopy. Also, access to remote regions remains a limitation, generating sampling bias across the geographical range of the Atlantic Forest. Future studies in these continuous and hard-to-access forested areas will yield important new information regarding the interactions between flowers and invertebrates in the Atlantic Forest. The food consumption of adolescents has changed nowadays, with an increase in ultra-processed food that in general shows higher calories and lower nutrients. Because of this, the objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of a 12-week multi-professional family versus isolated intervention on the food level processing of overweight adolescents. A randomized clinical trial study was carried out in which adolescents ( n = 43; mean aged 13.73 years) who were divided into FG-family group ( n = 21; the adolescents performed the activities with their parents) and IG-isolated group ( n = 22; the adolescents performed the activities alone). The parameters measured before and after 12 weeks of multi-professional intervention (physical exercise, nutrition and psychoeducation) were: body mass, height and body mass index-BMI. The level of food processing was analyzed using a three-day food recall (24hR), classified according to the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population (fresh, minimally, processed and ultra-processed foods). The main results show that there was only a significant reduction in the consumption of processed foods (FG: 7.93%; IG: 49.73%) and ultra-processed foods (FG: 35.06%; IG: 67.16%) in grams (FG: 22.29%; IG: 65.23%) and calories ( p < 0.05; for all comparisons). The consumption of fresh foods in grams (FG:61.97%; IG: 147.13%) and calories (FG: 147.13%; IG: 118.03%) and minimally processed foods (FG: 27.45%; IG: 14.64%) in grams increased significantly ( p < 0.05; for all comparisons). However, no significant differences were observed between all variables analyzed for the groups, nor any interaction ( p > 0.05). In conclusion, both groups who participated in the activities showed positive changes with increased consumption of fresh foods and reduced consumption of processed foods, without difference between them.

The presence of Staphylococcus spp. resistant to methicillin in the nasal cavity of swine has been previously reported. Considering the possible occurrence of bacterial resistance and presence of resistance genes in intensive swine breeding and the known transmissibility and dispersion potential of such genes, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of resistance to different antibiotics and the presence of the mecA resistance gene in Staphylococcus spp. from piglets recently housed in a nursery. For this, 60 nasal swabs were collected from piglets at the time of their housing in the nursery, and then Staphylococcus spp. were isolated and identified in coagulase-positive (CoPS) and coagulase-negative (CoNS) isolates. These isolates were subjected to the disk-diffusion test to evaluate the bacterial resistance profile and then subjected to molecular identification of Staphylococcus aureus and analyses of the mecA gene through polymerase chain reaction. Of the 60 samples collected, 60 Staphylococcus spp. were isolated, of which 38 (63.33%) were classified as CoNS and 22 (36.67%) as CoPS. Of these, ten (45.45%) were identified as Staphylococcus aureus. The resistance profile of these isolates showed high resistance to different antibiotics, with 100% of the isolates resistant to chloramphenicol, clindamycin, and erythromycin, 98.33% resistant to doxycycline, 95% resistant to oxacillin, and 85% resistant to cefoxitin. Regarding the mecA gene, 27 (45%) samples were positive for the presence of this gene, and three (11.11%) were phenotypically sensitive to oxacillin and cefoxitin. This finding highlights the importance of researching the phenotypic profile of resistance to different antimicrobials and resistance genes in the different phases of pig rearing to identify the real risk of these isolates from a One Health perspective. The present study revealed the presence of samples resistant to different antibiotics in recently weaned production animal that had not been markedly exposed to antimicrobials as growth promoters or even as prophylactics. This information highlights the need for more research on the possible sharing of bacteria between sows and piglets, the environmental pressure within production environments, and the exposure of handlers during their transport, especially considering the community, hospital, and political importance of the presence of circulating resistant strains., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Urban areas next to mangroves are subject to progressive heavy metal contamination. Treelets of Inga laurina were collected in this ecosystem and cultivated for 30 days in waterlogged conditions and closed pots (WC) and at field capacity (FC), while exposed to different Cd concentrations (0, 50 and 100 mg·kg -1 ). Soil water conditions did not affect total Cd in plants, with Cd accumulating in roots and WC inducing less leaf chlorophyll while increasing carotenoids and chlorophyll ratio. Higher net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and Ci/Ca ratio were observed under the highest Cd concentration and WC, while being conservative in water consumption as shown by the reduction in both water use efficiencies. Nutritional uptake behaved differently for each element, with N, Mg and Ca not being affected by Cd under WC but K increasing with Cd. At FC, plants showed higher values than WC, with the highest Cd concentration at FC showing the highest values overall. Nutrient allocation in organs was affected by WC in N, Mg, K, P and Ca but only P by Cd, with WC reducing nutrients overall and N, Mg and Ca behaving the same in both soil conditions while K was lowered in leaves and increased in roots under WC. P allocation under WC was not hindered by Cd even showing higher values in it than FC in some treatments. Altogether, results indicate that I. laurina can be considered a Cd-tolerant species, especially in WC and it presents a potential to be used as a phytoremediator plant., (© 2023. The high rates of carbapenem resistance among Brazilian Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates are mainly associated with the clone ST277 producing the carbapenemase SPM-1. Here, the complete genetic composition of a IncP plasmid harboring bla KPC-2 in isolates of this endemic clone carrying chromosomal bla SPM-1 was described using whole genome sequencing. These results confirm the association of these two carbapenemases in ST277 and also describe the genetic composition of a novel bla KPC-2 -plasmid. In Brazil, the production of KPC-type carbapenemases in Enterobacteriales is endemic, leading to widespread use of polymyxins. In the present study, 502 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were evaluated for resistance to polymyxins, their genetic determinants and clonality, in addition to the presence of carbapenem resistance genes and evaluation of antimicrobial resistance. Resistance to colistin (polymyxin E) was evaluated through initial selection on EMB agar containing 4% colistin sulfate, followed by Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) determination by broth microdilution. The susceptibility to 17 antimicrobials was assessed by disk diffusion. The presence of bla KPC , bla NDM and bla OXA-48-like carbapenemases was investigated by phenotypic methods and conventional PCR. Molecular typing was performed by PFGE and MLST. Allelic variants of the mcr gene were screened by PCR and chromosomal mutations in the pmrA , pmrB , phoP , phoQ and mgrB genes were investigated by sequencing. Our work showed a colistin resistance frequency of 29.5% (n = 148/502) in K. pneumoniae isolates. Colistin MICs from 4 to >128 µg/mL were identified (MIC 50 = 64 µg/mL; MIC 90 >128 µg/mL). All isolates were considered MDR, with the lowest resistance rates observed for amikacin (34.4%), and 19.6% of the isolates were resistant to all tested antimicrobials. The bla KPC gene was identified in 77% of the isolates, in consonance with the high rate of resistance to polymyxins related to its use as a therapeutic alternative. Through XbaI -PFGE, 51 pulsotypes were identified. MLST showed 21 STs, with ST437, ST258 and ST11 (CC11) being the most prevalent, and two new STs were determined: ST4868 and ST4869. The mcr-1 gene was identified in 3  K. pneumoniae isolates. Missense mutations in chromosomal genes were identified, as well as insertion sequences in mgrB . Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate late and asymptomatic patients after open partial horizontal laryngectomy (OPHL), investigating the clinical-surgical and socio-demographic factors associated with aspiration and severe dysphagia., Methods: One-thousand videofluoroscopic swallowing studies were performed in 100 asymptomatic patients in the late period after OPHL(median 6.5 years). Aspiration and severe dysphagia were, respectively, assessed by the Penetration-Aspiration scale (PAS) and by the Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) classification. Associated factors were investigated by multivariate logistic regressions., Results: 34% (95% CI 24.3-47.6%) of patients presented aspiration and 23% (95% CI 15.3-34.6%) had severe or life-threatening dysphagia (DIGEST grades 3-4). On logistic regression, the presence of aspiration was associated with lower preoperative serum albumin (odds ratio [OR]: 0.22; 95% CI 0.07-0.64; p = 0.005, for each 1 g/dL increment); a greater weight loss in early postoperative period (OR: 1.19, 95% CI 1.05-1.35; p = 0.008, for each 1 kg loss); older age at surgery (OR: 1.08; 95% CI 1.01-1.17, for each 1-year older); and with the presence of diabetes (OR: 5.16; 95% CI 1.09-27.47; p = 0.039)., Conclusion: Deglutition abnormalities are frequent in asymptomatic patients later after OPHL. Older patients, with lower preoperative serum albumin levels, with greater postoperative weight loss, and with diabetes compose the clinical profile at risk for having worse swallowing function in the late period after OPHL., (© 2022. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Leishmania sp. DNA and anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies in free-ranging Sapajus nigritus from an urban forest located in a city in the North Central region of the state of Paraná. For the indirect diagnosis, the direct agglutination test was used with promastigote forms of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis, where it was possible to detect the agglutination reaction in 53.33% of the S. nigritus blood samples. For direct diagnosis, the samples were submitted to real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, which confirmed the presence of Leishmania spp. DNA in 26.66% of the tested samples. It reinforces the importance of considering the concept of One Health in the face of diseases with high prevalence, such as leishmaniasis and the need for health education measures. Brazil is one of the largest consumers of pesticides in the world. This high consumption has resulted in higher potential health risk to agricultural farm workers due to occupational exposure. Hence, the aim of this study is to evaluate genomic instability, using Buccal Micronucleus Cytome (BMCyt) and telomere length (TL) measurement as biomarkers of occupational exposure to pesticides in rural workers living in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Genomic instability was evaluated in 81 pesticide-exposed farm workers (69 males and 12 females) with a mean age of 49.16 ± 10.06 years and a mean time job of 30.00 ± 14.00 years,81 non-exposed individuals (62 males and 15 females) with a mean age of 47.87 ± 10.66 years. BMCyt results showed significantly higher levels of cell damage (micronuclei and binucleated cells) and cell death (karyorrhectic and condensed chromatin cells) in subjects exposed to pesticide when compared to those non-exposed (p < 0.05). Although our results did not show significant differences in TL among exposed and non-exposed groups, effects in TL due to pesticide exposure was found in a multivariable linear regression model when we stratified the groups by age (≤ 49 years and ≥ 50 years old; β = 11.21, p = 0.006). In addition, TL reduction on was identified in relation to an increase in cigarette pack consumption (β = -0.633, p = 0.045). Furthermore, exposure to specific pesticides presented different effects in TL. Cypermethrin exposure resulted in a reduction in TL (β = -18.039, p = 0.018), while abamectin exposure led to an increase in TL (β = 23.990, p = 0.007). Background: The aim of this work was to identify gram-positive bacteria and their respective resistance profiles of free-living capuchin monkeys., Methods: For this, 15 Sapajus nigritus were captured in a municipal urban park in the northern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, and under pharmacological restraint, samples were collected with sterile swabs from the oral, rectal, ocular, nasal, and auricular regions. After isolation of the 22 gram-positive bacteria, each isolate was subjected to the catalase and coagulase tests for presumptive identification. Subsequently, phenotypic tests for bacterial resistance were performed using the agar diffusion disc method. The samples resistant to oxacillin were submitted to the PCR technique to search for the mecA gene., Results: Of the 22 gram-positive cocci of these two (9.09%) are Streptococcus spp. and twenty (90.91%) Staphylococcus spp. Among Staphylococcus spp. three (13.64%) were coagulate-negative (CoNS) and seventeen (86.36%) coagulate-positive (CoPS). Of the antimicrobials tested, enrofloxacin had the best performance, with only one (04.54%) isolate resistant to it, on the other hand, the antimicrobials with the lowest performance were cefotaxime and penicillin with 19 (82.36%) and 18 (81.81%) resistant isolates, respectively. Only five isolates had MAR less than 0.2, being one ocular, one oral, and three nasal, they had multiple resistance index varied between 0.07 and 0.92, with an average of 0.45 and a mode of 0.3. Among the samples with the highest resistance index, a positive coagulase Staphylococcus stood out, being intermediate to gentamicin and resistant to other antibiotics and an intermediate streptococcus to gentamicin, enrofloxacin, and resistant to other antibiotics. No sample was positive to mecA gene., Conclusions: Future studies should be conducted to identify the Staphylococcus species, the high rate of antimicrobial resistance of the monkeys in this study suggests that Grooming's behavior may be contributing to the sharing of the resistant microorganism among the members of this group of primates., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Due to recent developments in NGS technologies, genome sequencing is generating large volumes of new data containing a wealth of biological information. Understanding sequenced genomes in a biologically meaningful way and delineating their functional and metabolic landscapes is a first-level challenge. Considering the global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) problem, investments to expand surveillance and improve existing genome analysis technologies are pressing. In addition, the speed at which new genomic data is generated surpasses our capacity to analyze it with available bioinformatics methods, thus creating a need to develop new, user-friendly and comprehensive analytical tools. To this end, we propose a new web application, CABGen, developed with open-source software. CABGen allows storing, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting bioinformatics data in a friendly, scalable, easy-to-use environment and can process data from bacterial isolates of different species and origins. CABGen has three modules: Upload Sequences, Analyze Sequences, and Verify Results. Functionalities include coverage estimation, species identification, de novo genome assembly, and assembly quality, genome annotation, MLST mapping, searches for genes related to AMR, virulence, and plasmids, and detection of point mutations in specific AMR genes. Visualization tools are also available, greatly facilitating the handling of biological data. The reports include those results that are clinically relevant. Introduction: Background: we aimed to investigate the isolated effect of tele-exercises (TE) and their combined effect with nutritional coaching (NC) on health-related parameters of overweight and obese individuals. Methods: forty-one overweight (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2) and obese (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2) women were randomly assigned to the experimental groups: TE (n = 20) or TE+NC (n = 21). TE was applied 3 days/week in both groups, while TE+NC also received NC 1 day/week. Anthropometric, body composition, and exercise capacity-related outcomes, quality of life, and eating behavior were assessed before and after 8 weeks of the intervention. Results: a significant main time effect (p < 0.01) was detected for flexibility, isometric muscle strength and dynamic muscle endurance, but no main group effect was noted (p > 0.05). On the other hand, neither a significant main time nor group effect (p > 0.05) was detected in the anthropometric and body composition measures, quality of life, or eating behavior. Similarly, no significant between-group difference was observed in the absolute or relative change analysis (all comparisons, p > 0.05). Conclusions: an 8-week TE program enhanced exercise capacity, but did not impact anthropometric or body composition-related outcomes. The combination of NC+TE did not have a clinical advantage in the management of overweight and obesity.

Objective: To describe the correlation between the residues, their anatomical location and the presence of laryngotracheal penetration and aspiration in patients after supracricoid laryngectomy undergoing cricohyoidoepiglotopexy reconstruction., Methods: This study included 70 patients treated by supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglotopexy reconstruction in a referral national cancer hospital. The patients were submitted to swallowing videofluoroscopy, and the findings were classified by the penetration and aspiration scale. The images were described observing the presence or absence of residues and their anatomical location., Results: The prevalence of penetration in this study was 68.6% and aspiration was 34.3%. An association was found between the presence of residue on the tongue (p=0.005), posterior pharyngeal wall (p=0.013), pyriform recesses (p=0.002), valecula (p=0.061), and laryngeal penetration. The residue in the upper esophageal sphincter (p=0.039) was associated with the occurrence of laryngotracheal aspiration., Conclusion: Patients undergoing supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohioidoepiglotopexy reconstruction have food residues in different anatomical regions after swallowing. Penetration was associated with the presence of residues on the base of the tongue and posterior pharyngeal wall. Aspiration was associated with the presence of residues in the upper esophageal sphincter.

There is still a lack of consensus concerning the recommended etching concentration, application time and type of silane when bonding lithium disilicate-reinforced glass ceramics manufactured by CAD/CAM. The purpose of this study was thus to conduct an in vitro study which investigates the influence of hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentration, etching time and silane type on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of lithium disilicate to resin composites. Thirty-nine IPS e.max CAD blocks were randomly divided between thirteen groups (n = 3). The variables were HF concentration (9.5 or 4.9%), etching time (20 or 60 s) and silane type (Bis-Silane, Monobond Plus and ESPE Sil Silane). The blocks were cut into beams, aged for 10,000 cycles in a thermocycler and submitted to tensile stress to determine μTBS. A control group featuring the Monobond Etch & Prime (MEP) agent that combines etching/silanisation into a simultaneous process was also added. This group was discarded from the analysis due to only having pre-test failures. The data were analysed using a three-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). The HF concentration, etching time and silane type significantly influenced μTBS (p < 0.001). Significant interactions between time and silane type (p = 0.004), HF concentration and silane type (p < 0.001) and among the three factors (p < 0.001) were noted. Etching lithium disilicate with 9.5% HF (60 s), followed by the application of Bis-Silane, resulted in the highest μTBS (16.6 ± 9.0 MPa). The highest concentration and etching time under study, combined with a two-part silane, resulted in the highest bond strength, while the application of MEP showed a complete pre-test failure.
