Abstract

Melt-quenching technique was used to prepare iron tellurite glasses in the system Fe2O3-Sb-TeO2. The findings indicate that the variation in conductivity on alternate switching of gas atmospheres between oxygen and argon is reproducible. Moreover, the results suggest the practicality of the 15Fe2O3-5Sb-80TeO2 glass as an O2 gas sensor as evidenced by its high oxygen gas sensitivity.

Abstract

Nanoimprint lithography technology, which is able to easily create nanometer-resolution two-dimensional surface grooves on substrates over a large area by a step and stamp process, opens up an intriguing opportunity for functional liquid crystal (LC) alignment. We describe here a hybrid polymer consisting of two distinct moieties with largely different thermomechanical properties and surface activity. We present the results of nanoimprint lithography experiment using the hybrid polymer to demonstrate the practical applicability as an LC alignment layer. This material shows excellent capability both as a nanoimprinting material, requiring softness at moderate temperatures, and as a LC alignment layer, requiring sufficient rigidity. LC devices using the alignment layer show fairly stable electro-optic characteristics even after thermal aging, due to its high thermal stability. The soft component of the hybrid polymer helps it provide the multiple imprinting capabilities at higher temperatures virtually without any mold damages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The concept of hybrid polymers is proposed for liquid crystal (LC) alignment by nanoimprint lithography (NIL) technology in order to optimize thermomechanical properties and surface activity that is important for the LC alignment. Results show that LC devices using the hybrid polymer layer have demonstrated stable electro-optic characteristics even after thermal aging.

Abstract

Nano-architectures of single-crystalline anatase TiO2 nanosheets predominantly exposing the {001} facet are constructed in well-oriented configurations based on the strategies of controlled growth of TiO2 in novel growth modes, i.e. (a) the epitaxial growth mode of TiO2 nanosheets on the surface of oriented crystalline substrates, TiO2 and SnO2, resulting in an ordered growth direction, and (b) the hierarchical growth mode of TiO2 nanosheets on oriented nano-crystals, TiO2 nanowires, resulting in a well-ordered orientation and high surface areas as compared with conventional random growth of nanosheets. The present work explores a variety of methods for morphology control of TiO2 nanosheets directly grown on nanostructures as mother components, on which the potential of anatase TiO2 nanosheets to expose a high fraction of the reactive {001} facet is maximized. 43. Effects of Additives on Oxygen Reduction Kinetics at the Interface between Platinum and Perfluorinated Ionomer

Abstract

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at platinum electrodes covered with perfluorosulfonated ionomer film was studied in 0.05 mol dm-3 H2SO4 in the presence of various kinds of ammonium ions. Ammonium ion derivatives (R4N)2SO4 (R = H, CH3) and (R4N)HSO4 (R = C2H5, C3H7, and C4H9) were added with various amounts in the solution. The electrochemical measurements of ORR were performed to evaluate both charge transfer and diffusion kinetics of oxygen reduction at the Nafion film covered platinum rotating disk electrode. ORR was affected differently for different molecular weights of ammonium derivative ions. The suppression of ORR started in a short time for ammonium derivative ions of high molecular weight, reflecting the strong adsorption at the platinum surface. It was inferred that these ions strongly distorted the electric field at the platinum|ionomer interface. From the knowledge, a new method to inhibit the ORR degradation at platinum|ionomer interface was proposed, and several kinds of carboxylic acids or amino acids were tested as additives in the ionomer film. It was discovered that these additives successfully inhibit the ORR degradation brought about by impurity cations. After investigating the ORR kinetics, it was found that the additives prevented the degradation of the charge transfer step effectively, but the diffusion process in the film was degraded more by these additives.

44. Ion and Water Transport Characteristics of Perfluorosulfonated Ionomer Membranes with H<SUP>+</SUP> and Alkali Metal Cations

Abstract

Ion and water transport characteristics of Nafion ionomer membranes were investigated systematically in the mixed cation form of H+ and various kinds of alkali metal cation systems, which were prepared by equilibrating the membranes in the mixtures of HCl and alkali chloride in aqueous solutions of various mixing ratios. The membrane cationic composition showed that cations of larger atomic number had a higher affinity to sulfonic acid groups but less water content in the membrane than those of smaller atomic numbers. The net ionic conductivity was decreased, in any case, by the presence of alkali metal cations in the membrane. Different kinds of the interaction mode among cations were observed between H/Li or H/Na systems and H/K, H/Rb, or H/Cs systems. The interaction between alkali metal cations appeared to increase as the atomic number of the alkali metal cation increased. The water transference coefficient (electro-osmosis drag coefficient) increased from 2.5 to more than 10 by the presence of alkali metal cations. In the mixed systems, these cations were found to cause less water molecule drag than in the case of individual ions, in the presence of H+ ion. Overall, the transport characteristics of H+ and alkali metal cations influenced each other by way of the water molecules when they coexist in the membrane.

45. The Effect of Impurity Cations on the Oxygen Reduction Kinetics at Platinum Electrodes Covered with Perfluorinated Ionomer

Abstract

The mechanism of how impurity cations suppress the kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction on platinum surface covered with perfluoro-sulfonated ionomer film was studied in 0.1 N H2SO4 in the presence of various kinds of impurity ions of several concentrations. Impurity cations tested were Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ with the amount of 0.1%, 1%, and 10% as compared with H+ in the solution. Platinum disk of a rotating disk electrode was spin-coated with Nafion solution, and after drying the Nafion film-covered platinum was obtained. The electrochemical measurements were performed to evaluate both charge transfer and diffusion kinetics of oxygen reduction at the Nafion film-covered electrode. It was discovered that the impurity ions hindered enormously the rate of charge-transfer step at platinum covered with perfluoro-sulfonated ionomer. The suppression started already at 0.1% level of impurity concentration, but did not increase much at over 1% level. No suppression effect for oxygen reduction was observed for a bare platinum in the solution containing impurity ions, indicating that the effect is specific to the metal electrode−ionomer membrane interface. Also both the diffusion coefficient of oxygen and oxygen concentration in the membrane decreased by the presence of impurity cations. It was implied that all the process is related to the reorientation of polymer networks in the membrane, which might bring about the modification of electric double layer at the platinum−ionomer interface.

47. Histological Study of the Hydroxyapatite‐Collagen Complex Implants in Periodontal Osseous Defects in Dogs

Abstract

This study was performedto determine whether the process of wound healing, following periodontal surgery, could be improved through the combined use of collagen and grafting of hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles. Twenty‐four proximal defects were made in the mandibular fourth premolars and second molars of six adult mongrel dogs. Steel wires and resin were put into the defect to enhance plaque formation. At eight weeks, the wires and resin were removed. At ten weeks, HAP or HAP‐collagen complex was implanted during reconstructive surgery, along the root surface treated with acid conditioning. Dogs that received no implant following a flap operation served as controls. In these three groups of animals, differences in the extent and features of healing were histopathologically examined two months later. Animals implanted with a HAP‐collagen complex showed a larger amount of new cementum formation when compared with HAP‐implanted or control animals. In addition, in animals from the HAPcomplex group, the interdigitation between the root surface and the gingival connective tissue fibers tended to be reinforced resulting in suppressed epithelial downgrowth. However, neither bone formation nor the reformation of the periodontium was promoted in the HAPcollagen complex group. These results suggest that implantation of an HAP‐collagen complex promotes cementogenesis of the demineralized root surface and can establish a stronger interdigitation between the root surface and the gingival connective tissue fibers.
