The known species of the genus Norellisoma from China are reviewed and two new species from Yintiaoling Nature Reserve in Chongqing City, where no other Norellisoma species are recorded, are described: Norellisoma wuxiense sp. nov., Norellisoma yintiaoense sp. nov. A key to the species of Norellisoma from China is provided.

Conisternum matiseki nov.sp. (figs 1-3) T y p e m a t e r i a l: Holotype: ♁, IRAN, SE Iran Rask, 405 m [a.s.l.], N 26°11.035’ E 61° 23.675’, April to May 2017, Mal. [L Malaise] trap, M. Ghafouri Maghaddam leg. (FSPC). D e s c r i p t i o n: Body length 5 mm, primary colouration dark. Head: Totally grey, the face, orbits, gennae, frontal vitta, parafacials brown, antennae totally black, arista bare and thickened in first quarter, palpi yellow with very short black bristles, vibrissal callus with three strong bristles. Thorax: Chaetotaxy standard for the genus, basal and scutellar bristles of equal size, all femora yellowish-brown apically. Abdomen: ♁. Sternites 3 and 4 very long, along the circumference of both sternites narrow stripe of the hyaline membrane (fig. 1), the lobes of sternite 5 long including his body, medially between both lobes with sh ort black bristles. Cerci separated, narrowed and very long with short black bristles basally (fig. 2), surstyli very short. Praegonite very narrow, long with two short bristles apically (fig. 3). A new species, Neodexiopsis hirsuta sp. nov. (Diptera, Muscidae), from Palmas, Parana, Brazil, is described and illustrated here. The proboscis and male terminalia are described using ultrastructural morphology. This new species resembles a member of the Scathophagidae, although the male terminalia have a typical Coenosiini morphology. The maximum-likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (IB) molecular analyses of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences for the new species, along with those for four other species of Neodexiopsis found in the same locality and two sequences from GenBank were carried out. The molecular analyses indicated N. hirsuta sp. nov. as closely related to Neodexiopsis rava Snyder, 1957 and Neodexiopsis paulistensis Albuquerque, 1956. N. hirsuta sp. nov. and N. rava are now included in the available Brazilian species key to the genus. The distribution data of the Neodexiopsis species from Brazil has been improved by including N. rava as a new record to Brazil.

The male genital and pregenital skeleton and musculature were studied in males of the following species of the Muscidae subfamily Azeliinae: Drymeia firthiana (Huckett, 1965), Drymeia longiseta Sorokina & Pont, 2015, Drymeia segnis (Holmgren, 1883), Thricops nigritellus (Zetterstedt, 1838), Thricops hirtulus (Zetterstedt, 1838), Hydrotaea dentipes (Fabricius, 1805), Muscina stabulans (Fallén, 1817), and Muscina levida (Harris, 1780). Descriptions and figures of the genital sclerites and muscles of D. firthiana and M. stabulans are given. A comparison was made between the genital segments and muscles of previously studied species of Mydaeinae and Muscinae and those of the Azeliinae. Based on the structure of the skeleton and muscles of syntergosternite VII + VIII and the phallapodeme muscles, significant differences were found between the subfamily Azeliinae and the subfamilies Mydaeinae and Muscinae. The basal position of the Azeliinae within the family Muscidae was confirmed. A comparison of the genital segments and muscles of the Muscidae with those of the Scathophagidae (Scathophaga stercoraria (Linnaeus, 1758)) and Anthomyiidae (Delia platura (Meigen, 1826)) was made. Tendencies in reduction of the pregenital segments and musculature, as well as of the phallapodeme muscles in the evolution of the Muscoidea have been revealed. The complete set of phallapodeme muscles in the Scathophagidae and Anthomyiidae corresponds to the basal state, and therefore the structure of the genital sclerites and muscles in the Muscidae shows a certain degree of reduction. The progressive changes in the Muscidae from the Azeliinae through the Mydaeinae to the Muscinae were traced.

The Fennoscandian species of the genus Gimnomera Rondani, 1867 were studied and a new species, G. freyi, is described. A new subgenus, Ozerovia, is established for Gimnomera albipila (Zetterstedt, 1846). Gimnomera albipila (Zetterstedt, 1846) is redescribed and a lectotype is designated for it. An identification key for the Fennoscandian species of Gimnomera is given.

The structure of the abdominal and pregenital segments and genitalia was studied in males of Mydaea urbana (Meigen, 1826) and Graphomya maculata (Scopoli, 1763) (Muscidae, Mydaeinae). Reduction tendencies were revealed in the pregenital segments and musculature in Muscinae as compared with Mydaeinae, and also in the genitalia of Muscidae as compared with Scathophagidae (Scathophaga stercoraria). The genus Graphomya was found to be similar to Mydaea but different from the tribe Muscini in the characters of the sclerites and muscles of the male genitalia and pregenital segments; this confirms the position of Graphomya in the subfamily Mydaeinae.

A checklist is presented of all 986 extant species of Diptera known from the archipelago of the Maltese Islands situated in the central Mediterranean. Species considered to be alien to the Islands are listed with annotations in Appendix 1. The history of dipterology applicable to the islands is outlined and the three important historical published records by Zetterstedt, Rondani and Bezzi & de Stefani-Perez are listed in Appendices 2–4. Species names that are synonyms are indicated where these were used in published records for Malta more or less after the Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera was published. Species we consider to have been misidentifications are also indicated with an annotation in most cases. Vermileo immaculatus Carles-Tolrá syn. n. & Cuesta-Segura and Vermileo balearicus Wheeler syn. n. are proposed junior synonyms of Vermileo vermileo (Linnaeus).

Scathophagidae This family contains 417 predominantly Holarctic species (Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1856, 1863, 1866b) described nine Palaearctic and one Nearctic nominal species: of these ten, eight appear in his paper on Italian “ Stirps Scatophaginae ” (1866b). Four species are considered as valid, four as junior synonyms and two as doubtful (Aldrich 1905, Gorodkov 1986, Gorodkov et al., 1995, Šifner 2003, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). REMARKS: Rondani (1866b: 29) described Scatina fluvialis without specifying the number, the sex or the length of the specimens, publishing the species first in a separate (1866b) and then in the journal version (1867b). We found five specimens under the name Scatina fluvialis in this study (two males and two females in the MZUF and one male in the OUMNH). There are two MZUF females labeled “ Ital. Mer., Parma [= southern Italy, Parma]” but, as the type locality is “ Parma ”, one of them does not belong to the type series. We are unable to single out which of the two was collected on the Parmese plains. We leave the recognition of this latter syntype to a future specialist. Diagnosis. Gimnomera torikurai sp. nov. can be recognized by the black thoracic pleura with greyish dusting and the shape of male surstylus. Description. Male (Fig. 21). Head (Fig. 22): eyes reddish brown; frontal vitta reddish yellow; fronto-orbital plate and ocellar triangle black; face light brown with silvery microtrichose; parafacial yellow; genae narrow and yellow to grey with silvery microtrichose; postgenae and occiput dark grey microtrichose; postpedicel dark brown and approximately 2 times as long as wide; pedicel yellow; arista pubescent; palpi yellow and clavate, covered with short setulae; proboscis stout, with reduced labella; vibrissal angle with 1 strong and 2-3 subvibrissae. Chaetotaxy (black): 5 fr (medioclinate), 2 or (1 lateroclinate, 1 latero-reclinate), 1 oc, 1 poc, 1 vte, 1 vti. Thorax: wholly black with grey dusted; scutum with 4 longitudinal black stripes; postpronotum without erect black spinules on the anterior margin; proepisternum covered with hairs; anepisternum posteriorly with hairs; katepisternum sparsely with hairs; anepimeron, meron, and katatergite bare; metanotum bare and grey microtrichose. Chaetotaxy (black): 2 pprn, 2 npl, 1+2 ial; 2 sa, 2 pa, 2+3 dc, 1 dsc, 1 apsc; 1 prepm (yellow), 2-3 anepst, 1 kepst. Wings: hyaline, slightly tinged with brown; veins brown; vein R 1 with dorsal setulae on apical portion; veins R 4+5 and M 1 almost parallel; vein A 1 +CuA 2 abruptly end well before wing margin; calypter whitish yellow with hairs marginally; halteres yellow. Legs: coxae yellow to brown, femora and tibiae entirely yellow; fore femur ventrally covered with hairs; fore tibia with 1 apical d seta; mid tibia with apical d seta; hind tibia with 1 ad and 1 pd at middle, 1 pd basal one-third, 1 apical d, and 3-4 preapical setae; tarsi yellow, darkened apically. Abdomen: tergites I-V black and VI-VIII brown, covered with hairs; tergites I-II grey microtrichose and III-VIII rather shiny; sternite V (Fig. 23) with two broad median posterior lobes, covered with short spines; epandrium (Figs. 24, 25) sparsely with hairs but without setae; surstylus (Figs 24, 25) long and slender, tapered apically; aedeagus (Fig. 26) slender and apically membranous; epiphallus rod-shaped and slightly curved; paramere clavate, with setulae posteroapically; hypandrium strongly sclerotized and V-shaped; cercus (Figs 24, 25) somewhat slender, apically close to each other, sparsely covered with hairs and posteriorly with marginal setulae. Female. Abdominal sternites III to VI rounded square; segments VII to VIII sternites VII longitudinally elongate; segments (tergites and sternites) VII to VIII compressed and tegites VIII and sternite VIII strongly sclerotized and pigmented (Fig. 27); cercus, epiproct and hypoproct weakly sclerotized (Fig. 27). Other characteristics as those of male. Length (♂ ♀). Body, 6.0–6.5 mm; wings, 5.0 mm. Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido). Etymology. This new species is named after Mr. H. Torikura who first collected this species. Remarks. Ozerov (2019) synonymized Langechristia Ozerov with Gimnomera in his review of the Russian Gimnomera. Gimnomera torikurai sp. nov. belongs to the Langechristia group (G. amica (Ozerov), G. speciosa (Ozerov), and G. ziegleri (Ozerov)), which has no short erect black spinules on the anterior margin of the postpronotum. The present new species differs from other species of the Langechristia group in having the black thoracic pleura with greyish dusting and by the structure of male surstyli and cerci. Bionomics. This new species were collected from both flowers communities of Corydalis ambigua Cham. et Schltdl and C. incisa (Thunb.) Per. in early spring. This species is recognized by the following characteristics: frons, face, parafacial, and gena yellow; prescutum and scutum dark brown; postpronotum and thoracic pleura yellow; scutellum yellow with a pair of apical setae (Fig. 28); legs wholly yellow; abdominal tergites wholly yellow with narrow black line on each posterior margin (Fig. 29). Body length (♀). 5.5–6.0 mm. Distribution. Europe, Japan (Hokkaido), Russia (the European part, Siberia, the Far East) (Bagachanova et al., 2016), North America. New to Japan. Remarks.
