Abstract

The strong-interaction effects both in pionic hydrogen and deuterium atoms have been re-determined with improved precision. The hadronic shift and width in pionic hydrogen together with the hadronic shift in pionic deuterium constitute a one-fold constraint for the two independent pion-nucleon scattering lengths. Furthermore, the hadronic width in pionic deuterium measures the transition strength of s-wave pions on an isoscalar nucleon-nucleon pair which is an independent quantity not related to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths. The experiment was performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute by stopping a high-intensity low-energy pion beam in gaseous targets using the cyclotron trap. The X-rays emitted by the πH and πD atoms were analysed with a high resolution Bragg spectrometer equipped with spherically bent crystals. The pion-nucleon scattering lengths and other physical quantities extracted from the atom data are in good agreement with the results obtained from pionnucleon and nucleon-nucleon scattering experiments and confirm that a consistent picture is achieved for the low-energy pion-nucleon sector with respect to the expectations of chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract

The strong interaction shift ε1sπD and broadening Γ1sπD in pionic deuterium have been remeasured with high statistics by means of the πD(3p − 1s) X-ray transition using the cyclotron trap and a high-resolution crystal πD πD spectrometer. Preliminary results are ε1sπD = (−2325 ± 31) meV (repulsive) and Γ1sπD(1171+23-49) meV which yields for the πD scattering length aπD = [−(24.8 ± 0.3) + i (6.3-0.3+0.1)] · 10−3 mπ−1. From the imaginary part the threshold parameter for pion production is determined to be α = (252−11+15) µb.

Abstract

We have built a vacuum double crystal spectrometer, which coupled to an electron-cyclotron resonance ion source, allows to measure low-energy x-ray transitions in highly-charged ions with accuracies of the order of a few parts per million. We describe in detail the instrument and its performances. Furthermore, we present a few spectra of transitions in Ar$^{14+}$, Ar$^{15+}$ and Ar$^{16+}$. We have developed an ab initio simulation code that allows us to obtain accurate line profiles. It can reproduce experimental spectra with unprecedented accuracy. Abstract

The strong interaction shift $\epsilon$ and broadening {\Gamma} in pionic deuterium have been determined in a high statistics study of the {\pi}D(3p - 1s) X-ray transition using a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. The pionic deuterium shift will provide constraints for the pion-nucleon isospin scattering lengths extracted from measurements of shift and broadening in pionic hydrogen. The hadronic broadening is related to pion absorption and production at threshold. The results are \epsilon = (-2356 {\pm} 31)meV (repulsive) and {\Gamma}1s = (1171+23/-49) meV yielding for the complex {\pi}D scattering length a = [-(24.99 {\pm} 0.33) + i (6.22+0.12/-0.26)]x10-3/m{\pi}. From the imaginary part, the threshold parameter for pion production is obtained to be {\alpha} = (251 +5/-11) {\mu}b. This allows, in addition, and by using results from pion absorption in 3He at threshold, the determination of the effective couplings g0 and g1 for s-wave pion absorption on isoscalar and isovector NN pairs., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables accepted for publication in EPJA

Abstract

An unusual but effective way to determine at threshold the dpi -> NN transition strength is to exploit the hadronic ground-state broadening in pionic deuterium, accessible by x-ray spectroscopy. The broadening is dominated by the true absorption channel dpi- -> nn, which is related to s-wave pion production pp -> dpi+ by charge symmetry and detailed balance. Using the exotic atom circumvents the problem of Coulomb corrections to the cross section as necessary in the production experiments. Our dedicated measurement finds (1171+23/-49) meV for the broadening yielding (252+5/-11) \mub., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The most important processes for the creation of S12+ to S14+ ions excited states from the ground configurations of S9+ to S14+ ions in an electron cyclotron resonance ion source, leading to the emission of K X-ray lines, are studied. Theoretical values for inner-shell excitation and ionization cross sections, including double KL and triple KLL ionization, transition probabilities and energies for the deexcitation processes, are calculated in the framework of the multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method. With reasonable assumptions about the electron energy distribution, a theoretical K$\alpha$ X-ray spectrum is obtained, which is compared to recent experimental data.

Abstract

Radiation from the highly-charged ions contained in the plasma of Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources constitutes a very bright source of X-rays. Because the ions have a relatively low kinetic energy ($\approx 1$ eV) transitions can be very narrow, containing only small Doppler broadening. We describe preliminary accurate measurements of two and three-electron ions with Z=16--18. We show how these measurement can test sensitively many-body relativistic calculations or can be used as X-ray standards for precise measurements of X-ray transitions in exotic atoms.

Abstract

The full permanent magnet "supernanogan" type ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) ion source, SIMPA (Source d'Ions Multicharges de Paris) has been jointly operated by LKB (Laboratoire Kastler Brossel) and INSP (Institut des NanoSciences de Paris) since 2004. Since this time numerous projects have been started to use the extracted beam in atomic physics and surface physics experiments and the x-ray radiation of the ECR plasma for plasma and atomic physics investigations. In this paper recent achievements will be reported that include the first use of an electrostatic ion trap * for trapping highly charged ions on the beam line of an ECR ion source and electron temperature and density measurements with the help of the observation of the bremsstrahlung spectrum of the electrons in the ECR plasma of the source.** Also a new vacuum double crystal spectrometer *** is under construction in our lab that will allow us to measure the very narrow inner shell transitions of highly charged ions produced in the ECR plasma and provide new x-ray standards with this method for the atomic physics community.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate how combining highly-charged ions and exotic atoms measurements can provide high-accuracy information on particle properties, like the pion mass, on interactions, like the pion-proton strong interaction at low energy, and bound-state QED in strong fields. The use of highly-charged ion X-rays emitted by the plasma inside a super-conducting ion source provides a very detailed characterization of the response function of the X-ray spectrometer used to study exotic atoms, allowing for very accurate measurements. Conversely the use of the same high-resolution and high transmission spectrometer provides very accurate measurements of X-ray lines of few-electron ions.

Abstract

The 1s2s (3)S(1)→1s(2) (1)S(0) relativistic magnetic dipole transition in heliumlike argon, emitted by the plasma of an electron-cyclotron resonance ion source, has been measured using a double-flat crystal x-ray spectrometer. Such a spectrometer, used for the first time on a highly charged ion transition, provides absolute (reference-free) measurements in the x-ray domain. We find a transition energy of 3104.1605(77) eV (2.5 ppm accuracy). This value is the most accurate, reference-free measurement done for such a transition and is in good agreement with recent QED predictions.
