However, the DSM-5 criteria for melancholia (DSM-MEL) have been criticized, because of the difficulty in clearly distinguishing between melancholic and non-melancholic depression using DSM-MEL. Psychomotor disturbance (PMD) is one of the most important, as well as one of the only measurable symptoms of melancholia. Parker et al developed the CORE measure, which assesses PMD as a behavioral characteristic. The aim of our study was to objectively identify the subjective symptoms of melancholia by analyzing the symptoms associated with PMD.Patients and Methods: A total of 106 participants with MDD were examined by psychiatrists. Multiple regression analysis was performed in which the total CORE score was the dependent variable, and items of the DSM-MEL and historically suggested melancholic features were independent variables.Results: The following five independent variables were able to predict the total CORE score: 1) feelings of having lost feeling, 2) depressive delusions, 3) perplexity, 4) indecisiveness, and 5) no aggression against others.

Abstract

Previous studies on the effects of oil price changes indicate that oil price pass-through to inflation has decreased in the United States since the Great Moderation. This paper investigates why oil price pass-through has decreased from the viewpoint of an inflationary environment. By estimating a smooth transition autoregressive model that considers past US inflation rates, I show that oil price pass-through is low in a low-inflation environment. This result suggests that the inflationary environment is important in explaining the declining oil price pass-through in the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine when in the transitional period from NREM sleep toREM sleep the cortical activity characterizing REM sleep begins to occur in man, using AEP with long latencyas an index. In 10 of 12 subjects examined, the amplitude of N300, a component of the cortical auditoryevoked potential, was evidently smaller in REM sleep than in non-REM sleep. The start of the reduction ofN300 associated with the onset of REM sleep was estimated in these 10 subjects. In 5 of them, a markedreduction of the N300 amplitude occurred 0.5 to 2.5 minute just preceding the appearance of muscle atonia ofREM sleep. In 2 subjects, a similarly marked reduction of the N300 amplitude occurred 0.5 to 1.0 minute justpreceding the disappearance of sleep spindles or K-complexes. The present results suggest that thephysiological phenomena characterizing REM sleep do not always begin simultaneously, and that in man, thebrain electrical activity characterizing REM sleep often occurs a few minutes or less prior to the other twophysiological phenomena characterizing REM sleep, muscle atonia and rapid eye movements.

Abstract

To mitigate severe traffic confusion in the aftermath of an earthquake, the transportation management through the use of computer aided system is needful for government’s measures. Thus, a evaluation system based on the GIS and road network database has been developing in Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The system, which employs the flow dependent traffic assignment, estimates the maximum road network capacity with variable demand (namely, elastic demand) under any damaged network. Several categories of information, which are obtained from the system, can offer the efficient methods for transportation management.

31. Effects of Mineral-Commodity Price Shocks on Monetary Policy in Developed Countries

Abstract

This paper investigates effects of changes in mineral commodity prices on monetary policy. Using macroeconomic data from five developed countries (Australia, Canada and New Zealand as mineral-producing countries, and the US and the UK as non-mineral-resource countries), I estimate the impulse response functions of the policy interest rates and the core consumer price index (CPI) inflation rates to mineral-commodity price shocks. I find that, in response to an unexpected 10 percent increase in mineral commodity prices, the central banks in the mineral-producing countries are estimated to increase their policy interest rates by approximately one percentage point, and they seem to take anticipatory policy reactions to control core CPI variations triggered by these shocks. Thus, mineral commodity prices appear to be important determinants of the monetary policies in the mineral-producing countries. However, the effects of the increase in their policy interest rates on core CPI inflation are different across the examined mineral-producing countries. I also find that the central banks in the non-mineral- resource countries insignificantly respond to mineral-commodity price shocks because such price shocks have little impact on those countries'core CPI inflation.

Abstract

By ordering postwar Japanese historical scholarship on the “Rikkokushi,” (Six National Histories) chronologically, summarizing the current status of scholarship, and suggesting new approaches for study, this article aims to broaden the scope on the subject and heighten the possibilities for further research. The “Six National Histories” is a collection of six histories originally compiled in either the Nara or the Heian period and comprising dynastic histories up to the year 887. After categorizing postwar historiography into five periods (1940s-60s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s), the article divides it into stages and looks at future prospects for study. Abstract

— Aims: The present study focused on changes in P300 of the event-related potential (ERP) in two patients with alcohol dependence recorded throughout their alcohol withdrawal period. Results: As a result of this investigation, the peak latency of P300 in each patient was significantly shorter 2 or 3 days after abstinence from alcohol, when marked neurological manifestations appeared, compared to that of the control obtained from 8 to 10 days after cessation of drinking. Conclusions: It seems reasonable to conclude that the shortening of P300 latency reflects the enhancement of brain activity during the early withdrawal period and that an investigation of changes in P300 would be helpful to clarify the nature of neural activity in the brain associated with alcohol withdrawal. Abstract

Abstract: The association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and personality traits has been extensively studied. However, differences in personality traits between patients with melancholic MDD (MEL) and nonmelancholic MDD (NMEL) remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine whether neuroticism, which has been associated with MDD, and the five affective temperament subtypes assessed by the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-autoquestionnaire version (TEMPS-A) can be used to distinguish MEL and NMEL. A total of 106 patients with MDD (MEL, n = 52; NMEL, n = 54) and 212 age- and sex-matched healthy controls answered the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-revised and the short version of TEMPS-A. In hierarchical logistic regression analysis, only depressive temperament scores were identified as a statistically significant feature distinguishing NMEL from MEL. Depressive temperament scores assessed by the short version of TEMPS-A were found to be significantly higher in NMEL patients than in MEL patients., (Copyright © 2023 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc.
