This paper presents an integrated study on the effects of human activity, climate change and crustal movement on the changes of the middle reaches of the Tarim River in China. Remote sensing images and rainfall data from 38 stations from 1970 to 2021 were used for the research. The precise point positioning (PPP) approach was applied to ascertain the crustal movement of the study area using 256 Global Positioning System (GPS) station data of the recent 20 years. The results show that in the past 50 years the studied reaches of the river has moved north at maximum 2940 m or 57.9 m on average, and human activity may have played a dominant role in this change though extreme events of climate may have also taken a part in it. However, before the Anthropocene, its northeast migration is likely associated with crustal movement as the basin bottom inclines to northeast. To investigate the early attributional style and postoperative depression of renal transplant recipients and to explore the effects of attribution training on depression of them. A total of 62 patients who underwent renal transplantation in the urological kidney transplantation ward from a comprehensive 3A hospital of Fujian Province, from December 2016 to February 2018, were randomly divided into two groups: intervention and control group. There were 31 patients in the intervention group who underwent routine renal transplantation combined with attribution training, while 31 patients in the control group received routine renal transplantation. Five instruments were applied to evaluate these two groups of patients which are the Basic Data Questionnaire, Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Revised Piper Fatigue Scale (RPFS), Attribution Questionnaire (ASQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Attribution training can effectively improve patient’s attributional style, reduce depression, improve sleep quality and release fatigue. The early postoperative depression of renal transplant recipients is serious while Attribution Training can effectively improve depression, the sleep quality and fatigue, which solves the critical problems of clinical practice of kidney transplantation. Thus a strong basis for emotional problems improvement can be provided for renal transplant recipients.

Landslides constitute a severe environmental problem in Jiangxi, China. This research was aimed at conducting landslide hazard assessment to provide technical support for disaster reduction and prevention action in the province. Fourteen geo-environmental factors, e.g., slope, elevation, road, river, fault, lithology, rainfall, and land cover types, were selected for this study. A test was made in two cases: (1) only based on the main linear features, e.g., main rivers and roads, and (2) with detailed complete linear features including all levels of roads and rivers. After buffering of the linear features, an information value (IV) analysis was applied to quantify the distribution of the observed landslides for each subset of the 14 factors. The results were inputted into the binary logistic regression model (LRM) for landslide risk modeling, taking the known landslide points as a training set (70% of the total 9,525 points). The calculated probability of a landslide was further classified into five grades with an interval of 0.2 for hazard mapping: very high (3.70%), high (4.05%), moderate (18.72%), low (27.17%), and stable zones (46.36%). The accuracy was evaluated by AUC [the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve] vs. the validation set (30%, the remaining landslides). The final results show that with increasing the completeness of the linear features, the modeling reliability also significantly increased. We hence concluded that the tested methodology is capable of achieving the landslide hazard prediction at regional scale, and the results may provide technical support for geohazard reduction and prevention in the studied province.

This research was focused on estimation of tree canopy cover (CC) by multiscale remote sensing in south China. The key aim is to establish the relationship between CC and woody NDVI (NDVIW) or to build a CC-NDVIW model taking northeast Jiangxi as an example. Based on field CC measurements, this research used Google Earth as a complementary source to measure CC. In total, 63 sample plots of CC were created, among which 45 were applied for modeling and the remaining 18 were employed for verification. In order to ascertain the ratio R of NDVIW to the satellite observed NDVI, a 20-year time-series MODIS NDVI dataset was utilized for decomposition to obtain the NDVIW component, and then the ratio R was calculated with the equation R = (NDVIW/NDVI) *100%, respectively, for forest (CC &gt, 60%), medium woodland (CC = 25–60%) and sparse woodland (CC 1–25%). Landsat TM and OLI images that had been orthorectified by the provider USGS were atmospherically corrected using the COST model and used to derive NDVIL. R was multiplied for the NDVIL image to extract the woody NDVI (NDVIWL) from Landsat data for each of these plots. The 45 plots of CC data were linearly fitted to the NDVIWL, and a model with CC = 103.843 NDVIW + 6.157 (R2 = 0.881) was obtained. This equation was applied to predict CC at the 18 verification plots and a good agreement was found (R2 = 0.897). This validated CC-NDVIW model was further applied to the woody NDVI of forest, medium woodland and sparse woodland derived from Landsat data for regional CC estimation. An independent group of 24 measured plots was utilized for validation of the results, and an accuracy of 83.0% was obtained. Thence, the developed model has high predictivity and is suitable for large-scale estimation of CC using high-resolution data.

Landslide hazards affect the security of human life and property. Mapping the spatial distribution of landslide hazard risk is critical for decision-makers to implement disaster prevention measures. This study aimed to predict and zone landslide hazard risk, using Guixi County in eastern Jiangxi, China, as an example. An integrated dataset composed of 21 geo-information layers, including lithology, rainfall, altitude, slope, distances to faults, roads and rivers, and thickness of the weathering crust, was used to achieve the aim. Non-digital layers were digitized and assigned weights based on their landslide propensity. Landslide locations and non-risk zones (flat areas) were both vectorized as polygons and randomly divided into two groups to create a training set (70%) and a validation set (30%). Using this training set, the Random Forests (RF) algorithm, which is known for its accurate prediction, was applied to the integrated dataset for risk modeling. The results were assessed against the validation set. Overall accuracy of 91.23% and Kappa Coefficient of 0.82 were obtained. The calculated probability for each pixel was consequently graded into different zones for risk mapping. Hence, we conclude that landslide risk zoning using the RF algorithm can serve as a pertinent reference for local government in their disaster prevention and early warning measures.

Landslides are one of the major geohazards threatening human society. This study was aimed at conducting such a hazard risk prediction and zoning based on an efficient machine learning approach, Random Forest (RF), for Ruijin, Jiangxi, China. Multiple geospatial and geo-environmental data such as land cover, NDVI, landform, rainfall, stratigraphic lithology, proximity to faults, to roads and to rivers, depth of the weathered crust, etc., were utilized in this research. After pre-processing, including digitization, linear feature buffering and value assignment, 19 hazard-causative factors were eventually produced and converted into raster to constitute a 19-band geo-environmental dataset. 155 observed landslides that had truly taken places in the past 10 years were utilized to establish a vector layer. 70 % of the disaster sites (points) were randomly selected to compose a training set (TS) and the remained 30 % to form a validation set (VS). Rare earth elements (REE) mines have an extremely high strategic value, especially, in national aerospace industry and military fields. The long-term open mining and extraction processing of REE in the weathered crust since 1970s have led to serious land degradation, e.g., vegetation degradation, soil loss, reduction of soil fertility, and especially, environmental pollution to subsoil and groundwater. Taking southern Jiangxi, where ion-type of REE mines are mainly located, as an instance, the total mining area is measured about 79 km2 from 1291 mines, of which 56 km2 have been or are being managed with restoration measures identified by comparison between multitemporal very high resolution images available on Google Earth. Visual interpretation revealed that large-scale mining activities occurred after 2000 and restoration management was not intervened until 2010, in particular, 2013. As implemented by different enterprises or companies, post-mining restoration has a strong spatial variability in both management approaches and effectiveness from mine to mine. Up to today, no systematic monitoring and assessment have been conducted for this restoration intervention. It is, therefore, the objective of our study to evaluate the effectiveness of such restoration efforts using multitemporal October Landsat data with scene path/row number of 121/42-121/43 from 2000 to 2017. Eight managed and seven unmanaged typical mines were selected for a comparative analysis and restoration assessment.After atmospheric correction using COST model, NDVI and GDVI (Generalized Difference Vegetation Index) that is more suitable for low vegetation, as proxy of vegetation vigor and biomass production, were derived from all satellites images. The mean NDVI and GDVI values of each selected mine were calculated. The results show that NDVI of the managed REE mines has been increasing from 0.32 to 0.67 and GDVI from 0.55 to 0.90 year by year since 2010, indicating a vegetation recovery, especially, for those with effective management. In contrast, in the unmanaged mines, NDVI values remain low ranging from 0.20 to 0.40, and GDVI from 0.22 to 0.60, implying that the damaged vegetation cover caused by open mining and pollution has low capacity to recover without human intervention, where continue serious water loss and soil erosion. We also noted in some managed areas that planted grasses have survived but trees died or are dying probably because of the residual pollution in subsoil. This means a holistic management should be implemented in both surface, subsoil and groundwater, and monitoring be conducted by remote sensing in combination with soil sampling. This will be our next task of research.

Landslides are common geological hazards that not only affect the normal road traffic but also pose a great threat and damage to human lives and properties. This study aims to conduct such a hazard risk mapping using Random Forest Classification (RFC) approach taking Ruijin County in Jiangxi, China as an example. Multi-source data namely terrain (DEM, slope and aspect), precipitation, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) representing vegetation condition and abundance, strata and their lithology, distance to roads, distance to rivers, distance to faults, thickness of weathering crust, soil type and texture, etc., were employed for this study. The non-numeric data such as geological strata, soil units, faults, were spatialized and assigned values in terms of their susceptibility to landslide. Similarly, linear features such as roads, rivers and faults were buffered with distances of 0-30, 30-60, 60-90 and 90-120 m and each buffer zone was assigned a susceptibility value of landslide, e.g., zones 0-30, 30-60, 60-90 and 90-120 of road buffers were assigned respectively 10, 7, 4, and 1, meaning that the closer to the road, the higher risk of landslide. In total, 16 hazard factor layers were derived and converted into raster. 156 landslide hazards that have truly taken places (points) and been verified in field were used to create a training set (TS, 70% of total landslides) and a validation set (VS, 30%) by buffering-based rasterization procedure. A number of polygons were defined in places where landslide is unlikely to occur, e.g., water bodies, zero-slope plain, and urban areas. These polygons were added to the TS as non-risk area. Then, RFC was conducted to model the probability of landslide risk using these 16 factor layers as predictors and TS for training. The obtained RF model was applied back to the 16 factor layers to predict the probability of landslide risk at each pixel in the whole county. The prediction map was checked against the VS and found that the Overall Accuracy and Kappa Coefficient are respectively 92.18% and 0.8432, and the landslide-prone areas are mainly distributed on two sides of the roads. The results reveal that extremely high-risk zones with a probability of more than 0.9 take up 76.70 km2 in the county, and the distance to roads is the most important factor followed by precipitation among all factors causing landslides as road construction and housing development cut off slopes leading to instability of the weathered crust; and heavy rainfalls trigger the instability. Our study shows that the RFC prediction has high accuracy and in good consistency with field observation.

BackgroundMechanical thrombectomy with a stent retriever (SR) and/or aspiration is the 'gold standard' for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion (LVO). However, sometimes clots may not be retrievable with a single SR alone or combined with aspiration.ObjectiveTo assess the safety and efficacy of a novel tandem stents thrombectomy (TST) technique as a rescue treatment for acute LVO that is refractory to conventional attempts.MethodsAll patients treated with the TST technique as rescue treatment after failure of conventional attempts were retrospectively reviewed. The postprocedural angiographic and clinical outcome, including modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral infarction (mTICI) grade, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, was assessed.ResultsNine patients (mean age, 65.2 years; median NIHSS score 18) with middle cerebral artery M1 segment (n=6) and terminal internal carotid artery (n=3) occlusions were included in the study. The TST technique was performed as a rescue treatment after unsuccessful stent thrombectomy alone (four cases) and stent thrombectomy plus aspiration (five cases). Successful recanalization (mTICI 2b/3) was achieved in all patients. No procedure-related complications occurred except reversible vasospasms were observed in three patients and one patient developed hemorrhage transformation after the procedure, but was asymptomatic. Three patients had good clinical outcome (mRS score 0–2 at 90 days). Two patients (22.2%) died.ConclusionsThe TST technique seems to be a safe and effective rescue treatment for acute LVO that is refractory to conventional attempts.

Landslides are one of the major geohazards threatening human society. The objective of this study was to conduct a landslide hazard susceptibility assessment for Ruijin, Jiangxi, China, and to provide technical support to the local government for implementing disaster reduction and prevention measures. Machine learning approaches, e.g., random forests (RFs) and support vector machines (SVMs) were employed and multiple geo-environmental factors such as land cover, NDVI, landform, rainfall, lithology, and proximity to faults, roads, and rivers, etc., were utilized to achieve our purposes. For categorical factors, three processing approaches were proposed: simple numerical labeling (SNL), weight assignment (WA)-based and frequency ratio (FR)-based. Then 19 geo-environmental factors were respectively converted into raster to constitute three 19-band datasets, i.e., DS1, DS2, and DS3 from three different processes. Then, 155 observed landslides that occurred in the past decades were vectorized, among which 70% were randomly selected to compose a training set (TS1) and the remaining 30% to form a validation set (VS1). A number of non-landslide (no-risk) samples distributed in the whole study area were identified in low slope (&lt, 1–3°) zones such as urban areas and croplands, and also added to the TS1 and VS1 in the same ratio. For comparison, we used the FR approach to identify the no-risk samples in both flat and non-flat areas, and merged them into the field-observed landslides to constitute another pair of training and validation sets (TS2 and VS2) using the same ratio of 7:3. The RF algorithm was applied to model the probability of the landslide occurrence using DS1, DS2, and DS3 as predictive variables and TS1 and TS2 for training to obtain the SNL-based, WA-based, and FR-based RF models, respectively. Verified against VS1 and VS2, the three models have similar overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa coefficient (KC), which are 89.61%, 91.47%, and 94.54%, and 0.7926, 0.8299, and 0.8908, respectively. All of them are much better than the three models obtained by SVM algorithm with OA of 81.79%, 82.86%, and 83%, and KC of 0.6337, 0.655, and 0.660. New case verification with the recent 26 landslide events of 2017–2020 revealed that the landslide susceptibility map from WA-based RF modeling was able to properly identify the high and very high susceptibility zones where 23 new landslides had occurred, and performed better than the SNL-based and FR-based RF modeling, though the latter has a slightly higher OA and KC. Hence, we concluded that all three RF models achieve reasonable risk prediction, but WA-based and FR-based RF modeling deserves a recommendation for application elsewhere. The results of this study may serve as reference for the local authorities in prevention and early warning of landslide hazards.

Reliable prediction of landslide occurrence is important for hazard risk reduction and prevention. Taking Guixi in northeast Jiangxi as an example, this research aimed to conduct such a landslide risk assessment using a multiple logistic regression (MLR) algorithm. Field-investigated landslides and non-landslide sites were converted into polygons. We randomly generated 50,000 sampling points to intersect these polygons and the intersected points were divided into two parts, a training set (TS) and a validation set (VT) in a ratio of 7 to 3. Thirteen geo-environmental factors, including elevation, slope, and distance from roads were employed as hazard-causative factors, which were intersected by the TS to create the random point (RP)-based dataset. The next step was to compute the certainty factor (CF) of each factor to constitute a CF-based dataset. MLR was applied to the two datasets for landslide risk modeling. The probability of landslides was then calculated in each pixel, and risk maps were produced. The overall accuracy of these two models versus VS was 91.5% and 90.4% with a Kappa coefficient of 0.814 and 0.782, respectively. The RP-based MLR modeling achieved more reliable predictions and its risk map seems more plausible for providing technical support for implementing disaster prevention measures in Guixi.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are widely used in various industries. The open-pit mining and chemical extraction of REEs in the weathered crust in southern Jiangxi, China, since the 1970s have provoked severe damages to the environment. After 2010, different restorations have been implemented by various enterprises, which seem to have a spatial variability in both management techniques and efficiency from one mine to another. A number of vegetation indices, e.g., normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and atmospherically resistant vegetation index (ARVI), can be used for this kind of monitoring and assessment but lack sensitivity to subtle differences. For this reason, the main objective of this study was to explore the possibility to develop new, mining-tailored remote sensing indicators to monitor the impacts of REE mining on the environment and to assess the effectiveness of its related restoration using multitemporal Landsat data from 1988 to 2019. The new indicators, termed mining and restoration assessment indicators (MRAIs), were developed based on the strong contrast of spectral reflectance, albedo, land surface temperature (LST) and tasseled cap brightness (TCB) of REE mines between mining and postmining restoration management. These indicators were tested against vegetation indices such as NDVI, EVI, SAVI and generalized difference vegetation index (GDVI), and found to be more sensitive. Of similar sensitivity to each other, one of the new indicators was employed to conduct the restoration assessment of the mined areas. Six typically managed mines with different restoration degrees and management approaches were selected as hotspots for a comparative analysis to highlight their temporal trajectories using the selected MRAI. The results show that REE mining had experienced a rapid expansion in 1988–2010 with a total mined area of about 66.29 km2 in the observed counties. With implementation of the post-2010 restoration measures, an improvement of varying degrees in vegetation cover in most mines was distinguished and quantified. Hence, this study with the newly developed indicators provides a relevant approach for assessing the sustainable exploitation and management of REE resources in the study area.

The strong effect of ground damage and the serious earthquake-induced geological disasters are the notable features of Wenchuan earthquake. The distribution of earthquake-induced geological disasters in the earthquake is closely related to the distribution of earthquake fault, at the same time, it's also influenced and controlled by the physical geography, lithology, geological structure and human activities. The paper systematically generalizes the development characteristics, formation conditions and inducing factors of geological disasters combining with analysis of site conditions in Beichuan County. Analysis of correlative character between secondary geological disasters and the factor, and use information value method to evaluate the hazard of secondary geological disasters. The hazard map was obtained by summing up all geographical corresponding pixel values from each spatial layers according to information value. So geographical information systems combined with information value model can be quickly and effectively evaluate the spatial distribution and hazard of secondary geological disasters.

Microalgae are considered a promising biofuel resource to fix carbon dioxide (CO2), which can support social development and environmental improvement in the future. In this paper, characteristics of microalgae growth with two parameters of solar radiation and ambient temperature are investigated based on industrial-scale microalgae bulk growth model of Quinn et al. By using this model, the potential biomass production of microalgae in China is estimated based on data of the available untilled lands and the weather to be 7.38 × 109 tonnes. This is 2.4 times larger than China's energy consumption of 3.08 × 109 tonnes standard coal equivalent in 2010, and satisfies that predicted with an exponentially increasing trend for 2020, and 89% of the amount predicted for 2030. The annual total CO2 emissions reduced is estimated to be 13.5 × 109 tonnes, which can improve the natural environment besides supplying sustainable production in China.
