Shock recovery experiments of sinoite ([Si.sub.2][N.sub.2]O) were carded out in a pressure range of 28-64 GPa. Post-shock samples were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, micro Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Sinoite was stable up to ~28 GPa, being partially amorphous at 34 GPa, and almost completely amorphized above 41 GPa. These results are consistent with the observation that sinoite is found in enstatite chondrites classified into shock stage S2, and imply that sinoite may not be a crystallization product from impact melts and that it may be a metamorphic product of high temperatures and relatively low pressure. X-ray investigations of perchlorotriphenylene, a polycyclic aromatic chlorocarbon synthesized from tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, indicate a C2 conformation for this compound. It is stable under normal conditions, despite a distortion from planarity. Even in gas phase, the C2 conformation is favored, as is evident from MO and semiempirical calculations. This suggests the ability of the compound to undergo enantiomerization and its flexible nature.

The Sandorfy Huckel molecular orbital approximation method is still applicable to the heavier group 14 polymetallanes' electronic structures as demonstrated by the novel synthesis of long-chain polystannanes. Traditional methods were unable to synthesize the long-chain polystannanes but a new oligomerization technique the probably incorporates deprotonation, alpha-elimination and then insertion has been found, though its exact mechanisms are unknown. The synthesis technique and substances are described.

Roasting of solid tetrachlorophythalic anhydride yields compounds of general formula (C6H4)n such as perchlorotriphenylene, which is separated using thin layer chromatography. 8 mg of 80% pure perchlorotriphenylene is obtained from 1 gm of anhydride. X-ray analysis reveals the high distortion from planarity. The compound exhibits C2 symmetry and is stable under normal conditions.
