Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are bright millisecond-duration radio transients that appear about 1,000 times per day, all-sky, for a fluence threshold 5 Jy ms at 600 MHz. The FRB radio-emission physics and the compact objects involved in these events are subjects of intense active debate. To better constrain source models, the Bustling Universe Radio Survey Telescope in Taiwan (BURSTT) is optimized to discover and localize a large sample of rare, high-fluence, nearby FRBs. This is the population most amenable to multi-messenger, multi-wavelength follow-up, allowing deeper understanding of source mechanisms. BURSTT will provide horizon-to-horizon sky coverage with a half power field-of-view (FoV) of $\sim$10$^{4}$ deg$^{2}$, a 400 MHz effective bandwidth between 300-800 MHz, and sub-arcsecond localization, made possible using outrigger stations hundreds to thousands of km from the main array. Initially, BURSTT will employ 256 antennas. After tests of various antenna designs and optimization of system performance we plan to expand to 2048 antennas. We estimate that BURSTT-256 will detect and localize $\sim$100 bright ($\geq$100 Jy ms) FRBs per year. Another advantage of BURSTT's large FoV and continuous operation will be greatly enhanced monitoring of FRBs for repetition. Cisplatin is massively used to treat solid tumors. However, several severe adverse effects, such as cardiotoxicity, are obstacles to its clinical application. Cardiotoxicity may lead to congestive heart failure and even sudden cardiac death in patients receiving cisplatin. Therefore, finding a novel therapeutic strategy for the prevention of cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity is urgent. Quercetin is a flavonol compound that can be found in dietary fruits and vegetables. The antioxidant function and anti-inflammatory capacity of quercetin have been reported. However, whether quercetin could protect against cisplatin-caused apoptosis and cellular damage in cardiomyocytes is still unclear. H9c2 cardiomyocytes were treated with cisplatin (40 μM) for 24 h to induce cellular damage with or without quercetin pretreatment. We found that quercetin activates Nrf2 and HO-1 expression, thereby mitigating cisplatin-caused cytotoxicity in H9c2 cells. Quercetin also increases SOD levels, maintains mitochondrial function, and reduces oxidative stress under cisplatin stimulation. Quercetin attenuates cisplatin-induced apoptosis and inflammation in H9c2 cardiomyocytes; however, these cytoprotective effects were diminished by silencing Nrf2 and HO-1. In conclusion, this study reports that quercetin has the potential to antagonize cisplatin-caused cardiotoxicity by reducing ROS-mediated mitochondrial damage and inflammation via the Nrf2/HO-1 and p38MAPK/NF-[Formula: see text]Bp65/IL-8 signaling pathway. This study provided the theoretical basis and experimental proof for the clinical application of quercetin as a new effective strategy to relieve chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity.

Purpose: Postoperative endophthalmitis caused by nontuberculous mycobacterium is a rare but devastating complication after intraocular surgery. However, optimal treatment strategies remain undetermined in view of its rarity. Methods: We investigated the cases of culture-proven postoperative Mycobacteroides abscessus subsp. abscessus endophthalmitis in southern Taiwan, focusing on clinical manifestations and microbiological study, and aimed to describe clinical staging and to propose a therapeutic modality for this disease. Results: Twelve cases, including two published cases, were treated in two medical centers in southern Taiwan between Aug. 2011 and Dec. 2016, and all ever received cataract surgery at one clinic. Their disease courses could be categorized into four distinct stages, i.e., the initial, quiescent, recurrent, and end stage, and some cases experienced 1–4 cycles of quiescent-recurrent stages. The TAROGE-M radio observatory is a self-triggered antenna array on top of the ∼2700 m high Mt. Melbourne in Antarctica, designed to detect impulsive geomagnetic emission from extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy (UHE) particles beyond 1017 eV, including cosmic rays, Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, and particularly, the “ANITA anomalous events” (AAE) from near and below the horizon. The six AAE discovered by the ANITA experiment have signal features similar to tau neutrinos but that hypothesis is in tension either with the interaction length predicted by Standard Model or with the flux limits set by other experiments. Their origin remains uncertain, requiring more experimental inputs for clarification. The detection concept of TAROGE-M takes advantage of a high altitude with synoptic view toward the horizon as an efficient signal collector, and the radio quietness as well as strong and near vertical geomagnetic field in Antarctica, enhancing the relative radio signal strength. This approach has a low energy threshold, high duty cycle, and is easy to extend for quickly enlarging statistics. Here we report experimental results from the first TAROGE-M station deployed in January 2020, corresponding to approximately one month of livetime. The station consists of six receiving antennas operating at 180–450 MHz, and can reconstruct source directions of impulsive events with an angular resolution of ∼0.3°, calibrated in situ with a drone-borne pulser system. To demonstrate TAROGE-M's ability to detect UHE air showers, a search for cosmic ray signals in 25.3-days of data together with the detection simulation were conducted, resulting in seven identified candidates. The detected events have a mean reconstructed energy of 0.95-0.31 +0.46 EeV and zenith angles ranging from 25° to 82°, with both distributions agreeing with the simulations, indicating an energy threshold at about 0.3 EeV. The estimated cosmic ray flux at that energy is 1.2-0.9 +0.7 × 10-16 eV-1 km-2 yr-1 sr-1, also consistent with results of other experiments. The TAROGE-M sensitivity to AAEs is approximated by the tau neutrino exposure with simulations, which suggests comparable sensitivity as ANITA's at around 1 EeV energy with a few station-years of operation. These first results verified the station design and performance in a polar and high-altitude environment, and are promising for further discovery of tau neutrinos and AAEs after an extension in the near future.

Ultra-marathons are typically held over harsh terrains such as mountains, deserts, or other wilderness, and place severe demands on the physical and psychological capabilities of participants. Adventure-race competitors commonly report hallucinations. The goal of this study was to gain insight into visual hallucinations (VHs) during a mountain ultra-marathon. Thirty-one Taiwanese runners who participated in the 2018 Run Across Taiwan Ultra-Marathon, which spans 246 km with an altitude difference of 3266 m and an overall cut-off time of 44 h, volunteered for this study. Self-reported questionnaires on sleep duration, hallucinatory experiences, clinical symptoms of cold- and heat-related illnesses, and the 2018 Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Score were recorded prerace, during the summit, immediately postrace, and 3-days postrace. Hematological samples were collected 1 week before, immediately after, and 3 days after the race. We present a portable calibration pulser system applied to radio antennas in order to detect ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. The system consists of a solid-state high-voltage impulse generator, a digital attenuator, a wide band (150-350 MHz) bi-cone antenna, and a differential GPS. Taking an advantage of light weight of each component (less than $1.4$ kg), we developed an airborne calibration system by attaching them on a commercial drone. This system will be used for TAROGE experiment in high mountains as well as in Antarctica. We will report on its design, construction, performance, and potential applications for future radio experiments.

Organic carbon materials, such as graphene and nanotubes, with a high specific capacity show promise in improving the energy density for lithium ion batteries (LiBs). Here, we report on the synthesis and characterization of C60(OH)12 and the C60(OH)12/graphene oxide (GO) composite and demonstrate their use as anode materials in LiBs. We find that the C60(OH)12/GO composite forms due to the chemical reactions between the carboxyl and epoxy groups of GO and the hydroxyl of C60(OH)12 nanoparticles and that C60(OH)12 uniformly grows on the surface of GO nanosheets. Using a suite of spectroscopy probes, we unequivocally show the mixing between C60(OH)12 and GO at the molecular level, which leads to superior battery performances. This composite has a reversible capacity of 1596 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, higher than the capacities of C60(OH)12 and GO. This composite has a superior cycling stability and excellent rate performance, making it a promising organic anode material for high-performance LiBs.

Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) have developed as promising hole transport materials for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The conjugated backbone serves as an efficient vehicle for transporting holes, and the electric dipole layer formed through the organization of ionic groups on CPEs may improve the hole collection efficiency. In this work, three CPEs anchored with –N(CH3)3+, –SO3− and –NH3+ ions, denoted as BF-NMe3, BF-SO3 and BF-NH3, respectively, were synthesized and applied as the hole transport material (HTM) of inverted planar PSCs. Replacing the benchmark material, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), with the three CPEs as the HTM considerably improves the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. The results from scanning electron microscope imaging, X-ray diffraction and time-resolved photoluminescence indicate that the structure of the ionic species rather than the type of charge has a decisive impact on the perovskite morphology. Both cationic BF-NH3 and anionic BF-SO3 layers enable methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) to grow into larger crystals and grains with fewer defects. Moreover, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the BF-NH3 and BF-SO3 devices have comparable charge recombination resistance, which is apparently higher than that of the BF-NMe3 and PEDOT:PSS devices. Consequently, the cationic BF-NH3 can act as an excellent HTM as the anionic BF-SO3 and the champion cell based on BF-NH3 exhibits a superior power conversion efficiency of 17.7%.

Heterocyclic conjugated polymers BZCTVT and TAPTVT containing benzo[c]cinnoline (BZC) and tetraazapyrene (TAP), respectively, were prepared by using Stille coupling polymerization in microwave reactor. BZC and TAP act as acceptors and thiophene-vinylene-thiophene (TVT) acts as donors. Alkylated thiophene is the linker between acceptor and donor. This is the first time that tetraazapyrene was incorporated into conjugated polymers. The films of BZCTVT and TAPTVT showed maximum absorption wavelength at 522 and 534 nm, respectively. From cyclic voltammertry measurement, TAPTVT and BZCTVT exhibited low LUMO (−3.61 and −3.47 eV) and HOMO (−5.64 and −5.63 eV) energy levels. Even though BZC and TAP were planar structures, BZCTVT and TAPTVT showed large dihedral angles between alkylated thiophene and TVT (10.8–22.6°), and between alkylated thiophene and BZC and TAP (22.2–30.3°) based on their simulated energy-minimized geometry. The bottom-gate, top-contact OFETs based on TAPTVT and BZCTVT exhibited only p-channel behavior with hole mobility of 4.63 × 10−4 and 1.04 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1 and current on/off ratios greater than 104 after thermal annealing. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) patterns suggested that thin films of TAPTVT and BZCTVT preferred edge-on orientation.

The TAROGE-M observatory is an autonomous antenna array on the top of Mt.~Melbourne ($\sim2700$ m altitude) in Antarctica, designed to detect radio pulses from ultra-high energy (over $10^{17}$ eV) air showers coming from near-horizon directions. The targeted sources include cosmic rays, Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, and most of all, the anomalous near-horizon upward-going events of yet unknown origin discovered by ANITA experiments. The detection concept follows that of ANITA: monitoring large area of ice from high-altitude and taking advantage of strong geomagnetic field and quiet radio background in Antarctica, whereas having significantly greater livetime and scalability. The TAROGE-M station, upgraded from its prototype built in 2019, was deployed in January 2020, and consists of 6 log-periodic dipole antennas pointing horizontally with bandwidth of 180-450 MHz. The station is then calibrated with drone-borne transmitter, with which the event reconstruction obtained $\sim0.3^\circ$ angular resolution. The station was then smoothly operating in the following month, with the live time of $\sim30$ days, before interrupted by a power problem, and its online filtering has identified several candidate cosmic-ray events and sent out via satellite communication. In this paper, the instrumentation of the station for polar and high-altitude environment, its radio-locating performance, the preliminary result on cosmic-ray detection, and the future extension plan are presented.

A radio-frequency polarization measurement by the ARIANNA surface station was performed using a residual hole from the South Pole Ice Core (SPICEcore) Project. Radio pulses were emitted from a transmitter located down to 1.7 km below the snow surface. After deconvolving the raw signals for the detector response and attenuation from propagation through the ice, the signal pulses show no significant distortion and agree with a reference measurement of the emitter made in an anechoic chamber. The direction to transmitted radio pulse was measured with an angular resolution of 0.37 degree [statistical error]. For polarization, the statistical error of the polarization vector is depth dependent and below 1 degree. In addition, a slow systematic error as a function of depth is 2.7 degrees. Neither the direction or polarization measurement show a significant offset as a function of depth relative to expectation. We also report on the results of a simulation study of the ARIANNA neutrino direction and energy resolution. The software tool NuRadioMC was used to reconstruct the polarization and viewing angle to determine the neutrino direction. Multiple models of Askaryan radiation and detector sites along with a range of neutrino energies were evaluated. The neutrino space angle resolution was determined to be below 3 degrees, which is comparable to the systematic polarization uncertainty. Therefore it is expected that the polarization resolution, which is the dominant contribution to the neutrino space angle resolution, will be improved in future studies by determining and eliminating systematic effects.

Shed skins of snakes have practical applications and can provide information on biodiversity. We examined shed skins or scales stripped from 53 native species of snakes from Taiwan and adjacent islands and 13 foreign species, verified the intraspecific variation of microstructures on the scales, conducted phylogenetic comparative analyses of microdermatoglyphics, and developed a guide and key to identify shed skins by scanning electron microscopy. We examined several microstructural characteristics of scales including the form and dimensions of oberhautchen cells, denticulations, microridges, nanopits, and nanochannels. Furthermore, we noted scale shape and presence or absence of rounded tubercles on the scales. The microstructures of apical (and central) regions of scales were similar to each other, but different from those on basal and lateral margins, the keel, or apical pits. The microdermatoglyphics on cranial scales (cephalic shields) differed from those on scales from other regions of the body. Those from the dorsal and dorsolateral surfaces of the body, and the dorsal surface of the tail were similar, as were those on scales from the ventral surfaces of the body and tail. For adults or juveniles, there was no significant ontogenetic variation in many microdermatoglyphic characteristics. By conducting phylogenetic mapping, we found that symmetrical (dorsal) scales without apical pit organs or rounded tubercles, keelless and rounded scales, flat microdermatoglyphic patterns (without longitudinal microridges), (sub)lamellate oberhautchen cells, cell borders without denticulations or with tiny and keelless denticulations, and relatively small nanopits at denticulation joints or covering cells, are likely to be plesiomorphic character states. We also examined character evolution models based on the microdermatoglyphics and their phylogenetic signals, conducted phylogenetic generalized least-squares regressions to examine the correlations among snake habitat type and the morphological traits on scales, and confirmed a hypothesis that the evolution of scale microstructures is dominated by both phylogenetic and functional (ecological) constraints. This study also indicates that scale microstructure can be used to identify snakeskin products, roadkill specimens and fragmented samples, scale remnants in predator feces, and wild snake sloughs.

Stroke is the cause of death and disability in the global population. Patients often suffer from strokes because poor living habits. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a hot topic in various fields, especially in medical applications. In this article, patient's physiological data is used to build model for predicting stroke in an artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANNs method proposed in this paper can reach about 98% in classification accuracy under the condition of 1000 times cross-validation.

This paper presents a system for predicting the current price of lead based on artificial neural networks and NARX models. Using the London Metal Exchange (LME) spot metal price dataset for about 30 years, the proposed smart lead price prediction system can achieve prediction error of less than 10% (that‘s, approximately equal to $100). This article believes that in the near future, it can be expanded to predict futures prices from lead to other industries and even precious metals.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To determine the comparative efficacy of developmental care versus standard care for reducing pain and stress in preterm infants during examinations for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). BACKGROUND ROP examinations are routinely performed in neonatal intensive care units to detect these lesions. Pain scores recorded during and after eye examinations have revealed physiological and behavioural manifestations of pain and stress. DESIGN A randomised crossover trial was conducted. METHODS Fourteen preterm infants were evaluated. The modified developmental care bundle included environmental modifications, positioning and containment, oxygen supplementation, interaction and approach and cue-based individual care, which were applied before, during and after the ROP examination. The primary outcomes were obtained from pain and stress scores using the premature infant pain profile-revised (PIPP-R) and a behavioural evaluation. The secondary outcomes were recovery time to the baseline of the vital signs and oxygen saturation. High-frequency relapse remains a clinical hurdle for complete remission of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) patients, with heterogeneous dysregulated signaling profiles—including of Raf-MEK-ERK and Akt-mTORC1-S6K signaling pathways—recently being implicated in disease outcomes. Here we report that GM-CSF/IL-3/IL-5 receptor common β-chain-associated protein (CBAP) is highly expressed in human T-ALL cell lines and many primary tumor tissues and is required to bolster leukemia cell proliferation in tissue culture and for in vivo leukemogenesis in a xenograft mouse model. Downregulation of CBAP markedly restrains expansion of leukemia cells and alleviates disease aggravation of leukemic mice. Transcriptomic profiling and molecular biological analyses suggest that CBAP acts upstream of Ras and Rac1, and functions as a modulator of both Raf-MEK–ERK and Akt-mTORC1 signaling pathways to control leukemia cell growth. Specifically, CBAP facilitated Akt-dependent TSC2 phosphorylation in cell-based assays and in vitro analysis, decreased lysosomal localization of TSC2, and elevated Rheb-GTP loading and subsequent activation of mTORC1 signaling. Taken together, our findings reveal a novel oncogenic contribution of CBAP in T-ALL leukemic cells, in addition to its original pro-apoptotic function in cytokine-dependent cell lines and primary hematopoietic cells, by demonstrating its functional role in the regulation of Akt-TSC2-mTORC1 signaling for leukemia cell proliferation. Thus, CBAP represents a novel therapeutic target for many types of cancers and metabolic diseases linked to PI3K-Akt-mTORC1 signaling.

Background: In endurance sports, stress, dehydration and release of chemical factors have been associated with red blood cell (RBC) alterations of structure and function, which may contribute to sports anemia, a well-observed phenomenon during long-distance running. Until now, the investigation of the changes of viscoelastic properties of RBC membrane, a decisive factor of RBC deformability to avoid hemolysis, is lacking, especially in an Oriental population. Methods: nineteen runners were prospectively recruited into our study. Hematological parameters were analyzed before and immediately after the 2015 Taipei 24H Ultra-Marathon Festival, Taiwan. Video particle tracking microrheology was used to determine viscoelastic properties of each RBC sample by calculating the dynamic elastic modulus G′(f) and the viscous modulus G″(f) at frequency f = 20 Hz. Results: Haptoglobin, RBC count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell hemoglobin, plasma free hemoglobin and unsaturated iron-binding capacity values of the recruited runners showed a statistically significant drop in the post-race values. Blood concentration of reticulocyte and ferritin were significantly higher at post-race compared with pre-race. 15 out of the 19 runners had a concurrent change in the elastic and the viscous moduli of their RBCs. Changes in the elastic and the viscous moduli were correlated with changes in the RBC count, hemoglobin and hematocrit. Conclusion: Viscoelasticity properties, the elastic modulus G′(f) and the viscous modulus G″(f) of RBCs are associated with endurance exercise-induced anemia. We investigated the temporal changes in major eye injuries in Taiwan by reviewing the medical records of all patients with ocular trauma hospitalized at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital during 2002–2004 and 2012–2014. A total of 169 eyes (161 patients) during 2002–2004 and 121 eyes (120 patients) during 2012–2014 were enrolled (mean ± SD age: 41.9 ± 20.8 years in 2002–2004, and 51.8 ± 19.3 years in 2012–2014). Males accounted for ~75% of patients. The most frequent injury-causing object was metallic material (~24%), and blunt traumas were most frequently attributable to traffic accidents and falls. The most common locations of injuries for males and females were the workplace and home, respectively. Open-globe injuries occurred in ~70% of eyes, requiring primary repair, cataract extraction, and/or intraocular lens implantation. The frequencies of fall injury, lacrimal system laceration, lens injury, corneal/scleral foreign bodies, and use of intracameral antibiotics increased from 2002–2004 to 2012–2014, while those of closed-globe injury, vitreous haemorrhage, optic nerve injury, and medical treatment decreased. The final visual acuity remained poor (≤20/200) in >1/3 of injured eyes. Despite therapeutic advancements, major eye injuries still pose a high risk for poor visual outcome.

This study investigated the “real-world” use of ranibizumab for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in Taiwan and assessed the visual outcome. We reviewed the medical records at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Taiwan, during 2012–2014 for 264 consecutive eyes of 229 patients with nAMD, who applied for ranibizumab covered by national health insurance. A total of 194 eyes (73.5%) in 179 patients (65.5% men; mean ± standard deviation age 69.4 ± 10.7 years) were pre-approved for treatment. Applications for treatment increased year by year, but approval rates decreased during this time. The major causes of rejection for funding were diseases mimicking nAMD, including macular pucker/epiretinal membrane, macular scarring, dry-type AMD, and possible polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. After completion of three injections in 147 eyes, visual acuity significantly improved, gaining ≥1 line in 51.8% of eyes and stabilising in 38.3% of 141 eyes in which visual acuity was measured. The 114 eyes approved with only one application had a better visual outcome than the 27 eyes approved after the second or third applications. In conclusion, ranibizumab is effective for nAMD; however, approval after the second or third application for national health insurance cover is a less favourable predictor of visual outcome.

For eyes with deficient capsular support, intraocular lens (IOL) implantation has long been a technical challenge. Recently, intrascleral fixation of the haptics of a three-piece posterior chamber IOL has become a popular option. In this procedure, externalization of the leading haptic during IOL injection is a stressful step. We present a modified technique to improve the ease and safety of this step. Our modified technique involves IOL injection with a motorized injector with several important modifications described here. With these modifications, a surgeon can easily maintain the correct orientation of the IOL in a well-controlled manner during IOL injection.
