Cockroaches are detected ashore worldwide. At present, little is known about cockroach infestation on ships. The authors' objective in this study was to assess the current prevalence of cockroach infestation on seagoing vessels. In August 2005, port officials investigated cockroach infestation on 59 ships in Hamburg's port via standardized procedures (ie, illuminating hiding places and using pyrethrum spray). About 3 minutes after illumination or chemical provocation, the inspectors counted the number of insects escaping from their hiding places. The examination revealed cockroach presence in the galley or mess room of 6 ships (10.2%). These ships were bigger than 10,000 gross register tons (GRT) and older than 7 years. Inspectors detected the cockroach species Blattella germanica on 5 ships and Blatta orientalis on 1 ship. The standardized use of pyrethrum spray more frequently detected cockroaches than did inspection or illumination of their hiding places. Ship classification is the classification of merchant vessels on the basis of construction rules issued by Classification Societies and serves the rapid and easy determination of the principle dimensions of structural members and shipboard equipment. The reasons for the classification of naval ships, Rules of Germaniseher Lloyd (GL) and construction of naval ships construction supervision as per NATO-STANAG, and problems with the classification of naval ships are described.

The final clarification of the RMS Lusitania's ownership could help clarify a number of political, commercial and military issues associated with the ship. RMS Lusitania was a Class 100A vessel built by Sir Raylton Dixon and Co. It was powered by a 17,000hp steam engine and had a speed of 24 knots. It was launched on Feb 12, 1906 and was sunk by a German U-Boat on May 7, 1915. Among other speculations, it is thought that the ship carried munitions and that the British government had hoped that the Germans would attack the vessel to draw the US into World War I.

The Maritime Administration (Marad) has drawn up a proposal to allow foreign-owned shipping companies to manage ships in the National Defense Reserve Fleet. This Marad reserve fleet is composed of about 316 ships scattered in different locations such as Ft. Eustis, TX; Beaumont, VA; and Suisun Bay, CA. They are presently being kept and managed by US citizens and are on standby for any military, non-military or comercial crisis. This proposal is up for comment until Apr 20, 1993. So far, it has not attracted much attention.
