Introduction: Alcohol-related problems disproportionally affect people experiencing homelessness. As the first wave of the COVID-2019 pandemic spread in 2020, a number of emergency shelters were opened in Lisbon. Increased difficulties in obtaining alcohol could have led to an increased incidence of alcohol withdrawal. Therefore, a low-threshold harm reduction intervention was introduced to these emergency shelters. This consisted of a fixed medication treatment, made available immediately for those with specific conditions, without the need for a medical evaluation or abstinence from alcohol, together with an offer of subsequent access to specialized addiction centers. The Problemas Ligados ao Álcool em Centros de Emergência (PLACE) study (alcohol-related problems in emergency shelters) is a retrospective mixed-methods observational study. It describes the demographic, health, and social characteristics of shelter users participating in the program and aims to evaluate the intervention as well as the experience of the patients, professionals, and decision-makers involved. Results: A total of 69 people using shelters self-reported alcohol-related problems. Among them, 36.2% of the people accepted a pharmacological intervention, and 23.2% selected an addiction appointment. The take-up of the intervention was associated with better housing outcomes. A description of an individual's trajectory after leaving the shelter is provided. Discussion: This study suggests that non-abstinence-focused interventions can be useful and well-tolerated in treating addiction in this population. publishersversion published

Abstract

One of the critical issues in spintronics‐based technologies is to increase the data storage density. Current strategy is based on shrinking the devices size down to tens of nanometers, or several nanometers, which is reaching its limit. A new proposal is to use multi‐level cells (MLCs) to store more than two bits in each cell. In this work, the multi‐level switching is realized in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB based nano‐scale single perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p‐MTJs) with three or four stable resistance states. A large range of writing currents for each state is obtained, accompanying with a good repeatability of set‐reset operations between different states. The developed multi‐domain model perfectly matches the experimental results, reflecting the magnetic behaviors during multi‐level switching. Furthermore, current‐driven domain wall (DW) motion is revealed in the circular p‐MTJs, where the DW position can be reversibly manipulated by applied current. To design high‐performance multi‐level p‐MTJs, the parameter diagrams are calculated, suggesting various feasible strategies to improve the multi‐level switching through materials optimization and devices geometry. In summary, the demonstration of multi‐level switching in single p‐MTJ shows the high potential of realizing the new generation of p‐MTJ‐based multi‐level spintronic devices, such as multi‐level memories and spin‐neuron devices. 28. Biomolecular NMR Assignment: Illustration Using the Heme Signals in Horse Cytochrome c

Abstract

NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique with applications in a myriad of areas of scientific research. In (bio)chemical research, NMR spectroscopy can provide unique insights on structure, dynamics, and reactivity of target molecules. These studies typically start with the assignment of the NMR signals to specific nuclei. Here, we describe an NMR assignment activity aimed at advanced undergraduate or graduate level students in either the biological or chemical sciences. Using a variety of NMR spectral data, students assigned the protons of the horse cytochrome cheme cofactor in a single 4 h session. It provides students with the opportunity to execute successfully a simulated research task and appreciate the complexity and challenges of an NMR assignment and the excitement of finding the solution. For instructors, it is designed to dispense the need to access NMR spectrometers, which facilitates its implementation. Ultimately, this increases the range of institutions and curricular units where it can be adopted.

Abstract

Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) have been explored for spin transfer torque magnetic random access memory devices (STT-MRAMs). The current-induced switching (CIS) of the p-MTJs requires a relatively high current density (J); thereby, very thin insulating barriers are required, consequently increasing the risk of non-tunneling conduction mechanisms through the MgO film. In this work, we fabricated CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB p-MTJs and studied the CIS characteristics, with the obtained switching current densities of about 2 × 1010 A/m2. The filament conduction through the MgO film was induced by applying a high set current (Iset) until a significant decrease in the resistance (R) is observed. A decrease in R with increasing current (I) for parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) states was observed. In contrast, an increase in R with the increasing I value was observed for filament p-MTJs. We used a two-channel model to extract the filament resistance (Rf) and filament current (If). The Rf dependence on the electrical power (Pf) was linearly fitted, and a heating coefficient β of about 6%/mW was obtained, which was much higher than 0.15%/mW obtained from the bulk metallic multilayers of the top electrode. The CIS for filament p-MTJs was modeled by considering the bias dependence of the tunneling and the thermal dependence of Rf, showing a significant change in the CIS curves and switching currents. Our study addresses the effect of filament conduction on the tunneling current of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB p-MTJs, critical for the design and control of the p-MTJ based devices, such as STT-MRAMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Some of the phenomena where the “globalization” concept is applied include the internationalization of markets, globalization of culture, polítical hegemony of world by some states, or groups of states, the increasing power of supranational institutions, and the development of a global division of labour. A starting point to understand the global division of work is the study of how companies are re-structuring, once they are the key-actors in the decision on which work should be found and where. The “value chains” describe each step in the productive process of a final product or service. Separated units of value chains can be in the same company (in-house) or in different companies (outsourced). Similarly they can be in a same local, or in other location. Normalization of business processes, combined with digitalization of information and the development of telecommunication networks made possible the tele-mediated work. This paper presents results from the European WORKS project, where are studied Portuguese cases of firms that integrate globalized value chain, and are analized the implications on work organization models and the (new) professional structures.

39. Optimization of exposure parameters for lift-off process of sub-100 features using a negative tone electron beam resist.

Abstract

A thorough study of exposure parameters for electron beam lithography using AR7520 negative tone electron beam resist is here presented. We optimized the beam voltage, apertures diameter and resist thickness in order to achieve the smaller dimensions possible for each resist thicknesses. Monte Carlo simulations of the electrons scattering process correlated the experimental results indicating a less efficient energy deposition into the resist layer for larger beam energies and resist thicknesses, thus resulting in larger doses required to expose a selected dot size. Furthermore, for the particular exposure conditions used we determined a forward scattered electrons range between 50 nm and 170 nm, depending on the dot nominal size. On the other hand, a reduced backscattering electrons range was observed showing a constant value of ∼ 560 nm, being therefore more significant when larger dimensions are exposed in a point-by-point exposure, and thus supporting the smaller doses observed for larger sizes. Finally, a baking step is used to further improve the etch resistance of the resist, which allied to the optimized exposure parameters, opens a pathway to achieve sub-100nm critical dimensions for the reproducible fabrication of nanometric devices using a simple lift-off method. Abstract

The article presents a study that determines the effectiveness of organic acids in preventing Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis (SE) and Minnesota (SM) in broilers. It details the method of the study that observes broilers that were challenged with SE and SM that were feed with organic acids through their food and drinks. It notes the findings of the study which shows that organic acids in diet and drink water of the broilers reduced the spread of SM. It also concludes the effectiveness of using organic acids in controlling both SE and SM.

42. Magnetoresistive nanosensors: controlling magnetism at the nanoscale.

Abstract

The ability to detect the magnetic fields that surround us has promoted vast technological advances in sensing techniques. Among those, magnetoresistive sensors display an unpaired spatial resolution. Here, we successfully control the linear range of nanometric sensors using an interfacial exchange bias sensing layer coupling. An effective matching of material properties and sensor geometry improves the nanosensor performance, with top sensitivities of 3.7% mT(-1). The experimental results are well supported by 3D micromagnetic and magneto-transport simulations.
