Abstract

Introduction: The majority of medication apps support medication adherence. Equally, if not more important, is medication safety. Few apps report on medication safety, and fewer studies have been conducted with these apps.Objectives: The usability of a medication safety app was tested with nurses to reveal their perceptions of the graphical user interface and to discover problems they encountered in using the app.Methods: Usability testing of the app was conducted with RN-BSN students and informatics students (n = 18). Perceptions of the graphical components were gathered in pretest and posttest questionnaires, and video recordings of the usability testing were transcribed. The significance of the difference in mean performance time for 8 tasks was tested, and qualitative analysis was deployed to identify problems encountered and to rate the severity of each problem.Results: While all participants perceived the graphical user interface as easy to understand, nurses took significantly more time to complete certain tasks. More nurses found the medication app to be lacking in intuitiveness of user interface design, in capability to match real-world data, and in providing optimal information architecture.Conclusion: To successfully integrate mobile devices in healthcare, developers must address the problems that nurses encountered in use of the app. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals was created in 1949 to provide access to articles and book reviews in military and aeronautical publications. Until then, the majority of these publications had not been included in any government or commercial index. The original index included twenty-three titles. Currently, eighty periodicals are indexed by librarians at Air University Library and cooperating libraries, and include journals published in both the United States and abroad. The Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals: Historical Index of Titles 1949-2004 offers a comprehensive listing of all the titles covered by the Index since its inception. The dates of coverage are shown for each journal, along with all title changes.

26. Six Popular Financial Literacy Assessment Items and their Resulting Uses and Inferences: An Item Bias Study Utilizing DIF Analyses

Abstract

Financial education has become the popular antidote to the widespread financial literacy "problem" in the United States. Certain demographic groups (i.e., young adults, the elderly, women, and people of color) have been consistently identified as "financially illiterate." However, substantial increases in financial education – many targeting these specific groups - have achieved little, as research consistently finds that improvement to financial literacy in the U.S. remains elusive. The current study examined the validity and fairness of financial literacy assessments: specifically, whether test score interpretations and uses may be unfair due to measurement bias. Validity and reliability measures were analyzed, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analysis was conducted to identify potential measurement bias for the six financial literacy questions included in the 2018 National Financial Capability Study. Item responses were examined by participant age, race, and gender. The study found a lack of validity evidence regarding internal item consistency and item correlation, suggesting that the items measure different or multiple constructs. Furthermore, Differential Item Functioning (DIF) was indicated for three of the six items: Items two, four, and five. Large DIF was indicated for item two for the 65 and older focal group (β = -.13). Moderate DIF was found for item two in favor of the 18-24 age group (β = .06). Item four indicated large DIF for the 18-24 age group (β = -.10) and in favor of the 65+ focal group (β = .11). Items two and five indicated DIF for the Black/African American focal group (β = -.08 and -.06, respectively). Large DIF was found for item five in favor of the 18-24 age group (β = 0.09) and moderate DIF was found in favor of females in the gender group (β = 0.07). Test developers and users may find these items unsuitable for their target population(s).

Abstract

Although numerous studies have demonstrated that sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy can accurately determine the axillary nodal status for early breast cancer some studies have suggested that SLN biopsy may be less reliable for tumors >2 cm in size. This analysis was performed to determine whether tumor size affects the accuracy of SLN biopsy. The University of Louisville Breast Cancer Sentinel Lymph Node Study is a prospective multi-institutional study involving 226 surgeons. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of each institution, and informed consent was obtained from all patients. Patients with clinical stage T1–2N0breast cancer were eligible for the study. Some patients with T3tumors were included because they were clinically staged as T2but on final pathology were found to have tumors >5 cm. This analysis includes 2148 patients who were enrolled from August 1997 through October 2000. All patients underwent SLN biopsy using a combination of radioactive colloid and blue dye injection followed by completion Level I/II axillary dissection. Statistical comparison was performed by chi-square analysis. The SLN identification rate, false negative rate, and overall accuracy of SLN biopsy were not significantly different among tumor stages T1, T2, and T3. We conclude that SLN biopsy is no less accurate for T2–3breast cancers compared with T1tumors.
