A major shortcoming of LII is its inability to measure soot aggregate properties. Elastic light scattering, however, is a suitable method to provide these additional information [1]. The technique has been performed following different strategies, mainly in terms of the number of angles involved and the use of absolute or relative scattering intensities. In the last couple of years, many e-Science infrastructures have begun to offer production services to e- Scientists with an increasing number of applications that require access to different kinds of computational resources. Within Europe two rather different multi-national e-Science infrastructures evolved over time namely Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications (DEISA) and Enabling Grids for E-SciencE (EGEE). DEISA provides access to massively parallel systems such as supercomputers that are well suited for scientific applications that require many interactions between their typically high numbers of CPUs. EGEE on the other hand provides access to a world-wide Grid of university clusters and PC pools that are well suited for farming applications that require less or even no interactions between the distributed CPUs. While DEISA uses the HPC-driven Grid technology UNICORE, EGEE is based on the gLite Grid middleware optimized for farming jobs. Both have less adoption of open standards and therefore both systems are technically non-interoperable, which means that no e-Scientist can easily leverage the DEISA and EGEE infrastructure with one suitable client environment for scientific applications. This paper argues that future interoperability of such large e-Science infrastructures is required to improve e-Science in general and to increase the real scientific impact of world-wide Grids in particular. We discuss the interoperability achieved by the OMII-Europe project that fundamentally improved the interoperability between UNICORE and gLite by using open standards. We also outline one specific scientific scenario of the WISDOM initiative that actually benefits from the recently established interoperability.

This paper presents a knowledge architecture and set of ontologies that can be used as the foundation to facilitate the matching of abstract resource requests to services and resources, to determine the functional equivalence of Grid middle wares and deployments and to allow the description of ‘hybrid’ compound Grids composed of individual heterogeneous Grids. This is necessary as in all these cases what is required is mediation between different views or descriptions of Grids, which requires a formal reference vocabulary. We present a framework and ontologies for achieving this.

Executive Summary - The expert group convened in two meetings at Brussels to provide an expert's view on the 5 to 7 year research priorities for the European context. This group's opinion was that current Grid implementations lack many essential capabilities, which would enable the vision of complete resource virtualization. Three perspectives are defined to envision Next Generation Grid(s) (NGG): the end-user vision in which the simplicity of the Grid is exemplified; the architectural vision of a large-scale, selforganizing network; and the software vision of a programmable system. Each of these visions is described in detail to support the assignment of priorities to the research agenda. In order to realize those visions, a number of research priorities have been identified. They fall into three categories, the first one considering the properties of a Next Generation Grid, the second one specifying the facilities provided by an NGG, and the third one comprising the models that are needed for orchestrating Grid services. For clarity, a number of research topics have explicitly been excluded as falling outside the scope of this paper.

A broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) system optimized for single shot measurements in turbulent flames is described. The CARS spectrometer incorporates an intensified photodiode array (IPDA) with a P46-phosphor based intensifier that is shown to have an order of magnitude less image persistence than P20-phosphor based IPDAs, and thus largely eliminates the temperature errors that can result from this image persistence. The low and high signal nonlinearity of IPDAs incorporating both P20 and P46 phosphor based intensifiers is described. The CARS signal is dispersed with a single element concave holographic diffraction grating, which is fiber-optically coupled. To provide the necessary dynamic range (approximately 1000:1) to handle CARS spectra whose temperatures can vary from 300 K to adiabatic flame temperatures a fiber-optic splitter was employed and the nonlinearity of the IPDA detectors characterized. A method of determining the nonlinearity was developed that was convenient and the fiber-optic link was shown to provide a stable calibration of this nonlinearity. The problem of dye laser spectral drift, which is particularly severe in a long duration experiment, was addressed by constructing a compact high resolution spectrometer to continuously monitor the dye laser. The dye laser center frequency was maintained constant by manually adjusting an intracavity tuning filter. The accuracy of this technique and its effect on CARS derived temperatues was evaluated. The standard method of determining the instrument function by fitting to 295 K air spectra was compared to other methods and its use was shown to result in an uncertainty of less than 0.5% in CARS derived temperatures. The operation of this CARS instrument was demonstrated in a turbulent diffusion flame. The varying composition of these flames was accounted for by fitting C, tha ratio of the nitrogen mole fraction to the total third order nonlinear susceptibility.
