Abstract

International audience; When using object-oriented frameworks it is easy to overlook certain important method calls that are required at particular places in code. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive set of empirical facts on this problem, starting from traces of missing method calls in a bug repository. We propose a new system that searches for missing method calls in software based on the other method calls that are observable. Our key insight is that the voting theory concept of majority rule holds for method calls: a call is likely to be missing if there is a majority of similar pieces of code where this call is present. The evaluation shows that the system predictions go further missing method calls and often reveal different kinds of code smells (e.g. violations of API best practices).

Abstract

International audience; Advanced concurrency abstractions overcome the drawbacks of low-level techniques such as locks and monitors, freeing programmers that implement concurrent applications from the burden of concentrating on low-level details. However, with current approaches the coordination logic involved in complex coordination schemas is fragmented into several pieces including join patterns, data emissions triggered in different places of the application, and the application logic that implicitly creates dependencies among channels, hence indirectly among join patterns. We present JEScala, a language that captures coordination schemas in a more expressive and modular way by leveraging a seamless integration of an advanced event system with join abstractions. We validate our approach with case studies and provide a first performance assessment.

Abstract

Many business web-based applications do not offer applications programming interfaces (APIs) to enable other applications to access their data and functions in a programmatic manner. This makes their composition difficult (for instance to synchronize data between two applications). To address this challenge, this paper presents Abmash, an approach to facilitate the integration of such legacy web applications by automatically imitating human interactions with them. By automatically interacting with the graphical user interface (GUI) of web applications, the system supports all forms of integrations including bi-directional interactions and is able to interact with AJAX-based applications. Furthermore, the integration programs are easy to write since they deal with end-user, visual user-interface elements. Abstract

update for BASE on Sep 08 2018 22:43:36; International audience; On way to formalize system requirements is to express them using the object-oriented paradigm. In this case, the class model representing the structure of requirements is called a requirements metamodel, and requirements themselves are object-based models of natural-language requirements. In this paper, we show that such object-oriented requirements are well-suited to support a large class of requirements metrics. We define a requirements metamodel and use an automated measurement approach proposed in our previous work to specify requirements metrics. We show that it is possible to integrate 78 metrics from 11 different papers in the proposed framework. The software that computes the requirements metric values is fully generated from the specification of metrics.

Abstract

International audience; It is our great pleasure to host the seventh edition of the Domain-Specific Aspect Languages workshop (DSAL12), as part of AOSD 2012: Perspectives on Modularity, the 11th International Conference on Aspect-Oriented Software Development. The tendency to raise the abstraction level in programming languages towards a particular domain is also a major driving force in the research domain of aspect-oriented programming languages. As a matter of fact, pioneering work in this field was conducted by devising small domain-specific aspect languages (DSALs) such as COOL for concurrency management and RIDL for serialization, RG, AML, and others. After a dominating focus on general-purpose languages, research in the AOSD community is again taking this path in search of innovative approaches, insights and a deeper understanding of fundamentals behind AOP. Based on the successful DSAL'06-'11 workshops, and the special issue of IET Software journal on Domain- Specific Aspect Languages, this workshop series continues to support a growing trend in AOSD research. The workshop aims to bring the research communities of domain-specific language engineering and domain-specific aspect design together. In the previous successful editions held at GPCE06/OOPSLA06 and AOSD07 we approached domain-specific aspect languages both from a design and a language implementation point of view. At AOSD08-10 we also invited contributions of work on adding domain-specific extensions (DSXs) to general-purpose aspect languages (GPALs). Last year and this year our focus is on the use of multiple DSALs, or multidomain AOP, and how DSALs may ease composition issues. If an application uses multiple DSALs, one for each domain, how can interactions be treated and what advantages do DSALs bring to this setting? This year we accepted 6 papers for presentation and publication, 4 technical papers and 2 short papers. In addition to this, we have two invited talks: "Language-Oriented Modularity through Awesome DSALs", by David Lorenz, and "DiSL: An Extensible Language for Efficient and Comprehensive Dynamic Program Analysis", by Lukas Marek, Danilo Ansaloni, and Walter Binder. Both talks serve as a complement to the presentations of the respective authors in the research track of the AOSD12 conference.

Abstract

International audience; Event-driven programming style in OO languages based on imperatively triggered events does not support separate and more declarative event definitions by composition or transformation of other events. AO language mechanisms for defining events as declarative queries over implicitly available low-level events seem good candidates to approach these problems. However, being designed for modularizing mostly globally scoped, crosscutting concerns, AO mechanisms deliberately break with the OO design and modular reasoning style and are thus inappropriate for addressing modularity concerns related to event-based interactions in OO designs. The contribution of this paper is a language design that combines imperatively triggered events with AO-like mechanisms that are specifically designed to address modularity issues in event-driven object-oriented designs. In particular, they seamlessly integrate with OO-style encapsulation, late binding, and modular reasoning. We present an efficient and type-safe implementation of the proposed design as an extension to Scala.

Abstract

One common task of developing or maintaining software is searching the source code for information like specific method calls or write accesses to certain fields. This kind of information is required to correctly implement new features and to solve bugs. This paper presents an approach for querying source code with a natural language interface. It enables the developer to execute a huge range of precise searches while being as easy and intuitive to use as writing natural language. The evaluation shows that the prototype implementation, integrated with the Eclipse development environment for Java, supports a wide range of queries and is able to correctly understand most real developer queries.

Abstract

In object-oriented designs inversion of control is achieved by an event-driven programming style based on imperatively triggered events. An alternative approach can be found in aspect-oriented programming, which defines events as declarative queries over implicitly available events. This helps to localize definition of events and avoid preplanning, but lacks a clean integration with object-oriented features and principles. The contribution of this work is a concept of object-oriented events that combines imperative, declarative and implicit events and provides their seamless integration with object-oriented features, preserving encapsulation and modular reasoning. We present an efficient and type-safe implementation of the concept as an extension to the Scala language.; Dans une conception par objets, l'inversion de contrôle s'appuie sur un style de programmation événementiel utilisant des événements lancés de manière impérative. La programmation par aspects suggère une autre voie qui consiste à définir des événements sous la forme de requêtes déclaratives portant sur des événements prédéfinis. Il est ainsi possible de localiser la définition des événements sans planifier à l'avance l'existence de ces événements. Cette voie pose toutefois un problème d'intégration aux caractéristiques et aux principes de la programmation par objets. La contribution de ce travail est l'introduction d'un concept d'événement qui combine différents types d'événements, impératifs, déclaratifs et implicites tout en étant parfaitement intégré avec les principes des objets, préservant notamment l'encapsulation et le raisonnement modulaire propre aux objets. Nous présentons ici une implémentation typée et efficace de ce concept sous la forme d'un extension du langage de programmation Scala.

Abstract

International audience; This paper introduces a new model of event handling combining explicitly triggered events with events intercepted with aspect-oriented features. The model supports event abstraction, polymorphic references to events, and declarative definition of events as expressions involving references to events from other objects. We show that this model makes it easy to define a declarative and compositional notion of event-based context. We illustrate these ideas with examples in ECaesarJ, a language with concrete support for our model, and relate the events of ECaesarJ to other event-handling and context-handling models.
