We measured the solid–liquid–vapor (SLV) equilibrium of binary mixtures during experiments that alternated between cooling the mixture and injecting the more-volatile component into the sample chamber; thus, the composition of the mixture changed (non-isoplethic) throughout the experiment. Four binary mixtures were used in the experiments to represent mixtures with miscible solid phases (N2/CO) and barely miscible solid solutions (N2/C2H6), as well as mixtures with intermediate solid miscibility (N2/CH4 and CO/CH4). We measured new SLV pressure data for the binary mixtures, except for N2/CH4, which are also available in the literature for verification in this work. While these mixtures are of great interest in planetary science and cryogenics, the resulting pressure data are also needed for modeling purposes. We found the results for N2/CH4 to be consistent with the literature. The resulting new SLV curve for CO/CH4 shows similarities to N2/CH4. Both have two density inversion points (bracketing the temperature range where the solid floats). This result is important for places such as Pluto, Triton, and Titan, where these mixtures exist in vapor, liquid, and solid phases. Based on our experiments, the presence of a eutectic is unlikely for the N2/CH4 and CO/CH4 systems. An azeotrope with or without a peritectic is likely, but further investigations are needed to confirm. The N2/CO system does not have a density inversion point, as the ice always sinks in its liquid. For N2/C2H6, new SLV pressure data were measured near each triple point of the pure components.

In 1977, while Apple II and Atari computers were being sold, a tiny dot was observed in an inconvenient orbit. The minor body 1977 UB, to be named (2060) Chiron, with an orbit between Saturn and Uranus, became the first Centaur, a new class of minor bodies orbiting roughly between Jupiter and Neptune. The observed overabundance of short-period comets lead to the downfall of the Oort Cloud as exclusive source of comets and to the rise of the need for a Trans-Neptunian comet belt. Centaurs were rapidly seen as the transition phase between Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs), also known as Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) and the Jupiter-Family Comets (JFCs). Since then, a lot more has been discovered about Centaurs: they can have cometary activity and outbursts, satellites, and even rings. Over the past four decades since the discovery of the first Centaur, rotation periods, surface colors, reflectivity spectra and albedos have been measured and analyzed. However, despite such a large number of studies and complementary techniques, the Centaur population remains a mystery as they are in so many ways different from the TNOs and even more so from the JFCs. On Titan, methane (CH4) and ethane (C2H6) are the dominant species found in the lakes and seas. In this study, we have combined laboratory work and modeling to refine the methane–ethane binary phase diagram at low temperatures and probe how the molecules interact at these conditions. We used visual inspection for the liquidus and Raman spectroscopy for the solidus. Through these methods, we determined a eutectic point of 71.15 ± 0.5 K at a composition of 0.644 ± 0.018 methane–0.356 ± 0.018 ethane mole fraction from the liquidus data. Using the solidus data, we found a eutectic isotherm temperature of 72.2 K with a standard deviation of 0.4 K. In addition to mapping the binary system, we looked at the solid–solid transitions of pure ethane and found that, when cooling, the transition of solid I–III occurred at 89.45 ± 0.2 K. The warming sequence showed transitions of solid III–II occurring at 89.85 ± 0.2 K and solid II–I at 89.65 ± 0.2 K. Ideal predictions were compared with molecular dynamics simulations to reveal that the methane–ethane system behaves almost ideally, and the largest deviations occur as the mixing ratio approaches the eutectic composition.

International audience; On July 14, 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft made its closest approach to Pluto at about 12,000 km from its surface (Stern et al., 2015). Using the LEISA (Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array) near-IR imaging spectrometer we obtained two scans across the encounter hemisphere of Pluto at 6-7 km/pixel resolution. By correlating each spectrum with a crystalline H 2 O-ice model, we find several sites on Pluto's surface that exhibit the 1.5, 1.65 and 2.0 µm absorption bands characteristic of H 2 O-ice in the crystalline phase. These sites tend to be isolated and small (≲ 5000 km 2 per site). We note a distinct near-IR blue slope over the LEISA wavelength range and asymmetries in the shape of the 2.0 µm H 2 O-ice band in spectra with weak CH 4-ice bands and strong H 2 O-ice bands. These characteristics are indicative of fine-grain (grain diameters < wavelength or ∼ 1 µm) H 2 O-ice, like that seen in the spectra of Saturnian rings and satellites. However, the best-fit Hapke models require small mass fractions (≲10 −3) of fine-grained H 2 O-ice that we can exchange for other refractory materials in the models with little change in χ 2 , which may mean that the observed blue slope is possibly not due to a fine-grained material but an unidentified material with a similar spectral characteristic. We use these spectra to test for the presence of amorphous H 2 O-ice and estimate crystalline-to-amorphous H 2 O-ice fractions between 30 and 100%, depending on the location. We also see evidence for heavy hydrocarbons via strong absorption at λ > 2.3 µm. Such heavy hydrocarbons are much less volatile than N 2 , CH 4 , and CO at Pluto temperatures. We test for CH 3 OH, C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 3 H 8-ices because they have known optical constants and these ices are likely to arise from UV and energetic particle bombardment of the N 2 , CH 4 , CO-rich surface and atmosphere. Finally, we attempt to estimate the surface temperature using optical constants of pure CH 4 , and H 2 O-ice and best-fit Hapke models. Our standard model gives temperature estimates between 40 and 90 K, while our models including amorphous H 2 O-ice give lower temperature estimates between 30 and 65 K.

A combination band due to a mechanism whereby a photon excites two or more vibrational modes ({\it e.g.} a bend and a stretch) of an individual molecule is commonly seen in laboratory and astronomical spectroscopy. Here, we present evidence of a much less commonly seen combination band $-$ one where a photon simultaneously excites two adjacent molecules in an ice. In particular, we present near-infrared spectra of laboratory CO/N$_2$ ice samples where we identify a band at 4467.5 cm$^{-1}$ (2.239 $\mu$m) that results from single photons exciting adjacent pairs of CO and N$_2$ molecules. We also present a near-infrared spectrum of Neptune's largest satellite Triton taken with the Gemini-South 8.1 meter telescope and the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) that shows this 4467.5 cm$^{-1}$ (2.239 $\mu$m) CO-N$_2$ combination band. The existence of the band in a spectrum of Triton indicates that CO and N$_2$ molecules are intimately mixed in the ice rather than existing as separate regions of pure CO and pure N$_2$ deposits. Our finding is important because CO and N$_2$ are the most volatile species on Triton and so dominate seasonal volatile transport across its surface. Saturn’s moon Titan is the only extraterrestrial body known to host stable lakes and a hydrological cycle. Titan’s lakes predominantly contain liquid methane, ethane, and nitrogen, with methane evaporation driving its hydrological cycle. Molecular interactions between these three species lead to nonideal behavior that causes Titan’s lakes to behave differently than Earth’s lakes. Here, we numerically investigate how methane evaporation and nonideal interactions affect the physical properties, structure, dynamics, and evolution of shallow lakes on Titan. We find that, under certain temperature regimes, methane-rich mixtures are denser than relatively ethane-rich mixtures. This allows methane evaporation to stratify Titan’s lakes into ethane-rich upper layers and methane-rich lower layers, separated by a strong compositional gradient. At temperatures above 86 K, lakes remain well mixed and unstratified. Between 84 and 86 K, lakes can stratify episodically. Below 84 K, lakes permanently stratify and develop very methane-depleted epilimnia. Despite small seasonal and diurnal deviations (

The methane–nitrogen phase diagram of Prokhvatilov and Yantsevich (1983. Sov. J. Low Temp. Phys. 9, 94–98) indicates that at temperatures relevant to the surfaces of icy dwarf planets like Pluto, two phases contribute to the methane absorptions: nitrogen saturated with methane N 2 ‾ : CH 4 and methane saturated with nitrogen CH 4 ‾ : N 2 . No optical constants are available so far for the latter component limiting construction of a proper model, in compliance with thermodynamic equilibrium considerations. New optical constants for solid solutions of methane diluted in nitrogen ( N 2 : CH 4 ) and nitrogen diluted in methane ( CH 4 : N 2 ) are presented at temperatures between 40 and 90 K, in the wavelength range 1.1–2.7 μm at different mixing ratios. These optical constants are derived from transmission measurements of crystals grown from the liquid phase in closed cells. A systematic study of the changes of methane and nitrogen solid mixtures spectral behavior with mixing ratio and temperature is presented.

At a mean diameter of ~650 m, the near-Earth asteroid (455213) 2001 OE84 (OE84 for short) has a rapid rotation period of 0.486542+-0.000002 hours, which is uncommon for asteroids larger than ~200 m. We revisited OE84 14 years after it was first, and last, observed by Pravec et al. (2002) in order to measure again its spin rate and to search for changes. We have confirmed the rapid rotation and, by fitting the photometric data from 2001 and 2016 using the lightcurve inversion technique, we determined a retrograde sense of rotation, with the spin axis close to the ecliptic south pole; an oblate shape model of a/b=1.32+-0.04 and b/c=1.8+-0.2; and no change in spin rate between 2001 and 2016. Using these parameters we constrained the body's internal strength, and found that current estimations of asteroid cohesion (up to ~80 Pa) are insufficient to maintain an intact rubble pile at the measured spin rate of OE84. Therefore, we argue that a monolithic asteroid, that can rotate at the rate of OE84 without shedding mass and without slowing down its spin rate, is the most plausible for OE84, and we give constraints on its age, since the time it was liberated from its parent body, between 2-10 million years., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We present spectra of Eris from the MMT 6.5 meter telescope and Red Channel Spectrograph (5700-9800 angstroms; 5 angstroms per pix) on Mt. Hopkins, AZ, and of Pluto from the Steward Observatory 2.3 meter telescope and Boller and Chivens spectrograph (7100-9400 angstroms; 2 angstroms per pix) on Kitt Peak, AZ. In addition, we present laboratory transmission spectra of methane-nitrogen and methane-argon ice mixtures. By anchoring our analysis in methane and nitrogen solubilities in one another as expressed in the phase diagram of Prokhvatilov and Yantsevich (1983), and comparing methane bands in our Eris and Pluto spectra and methane bands in our laboratory spectra of methane and nitrogen ice mixtures, we find Eris' bulk methane and nitrogen abundances are about 10% and about 90%, and Pluto's bulk methane and nitrogen abundances are about 3% and about 97%. Such abundances for Pluto are consistent with values reported in the literature. It appears that the bulk volatile composition of Eris is similar to the bulk volatile composition of Pluto. Both objects appear to be dominated by nitrogen ice. Our analysis also suggests, unlike previous work reported in the literature, that the methane and nitrogen stoichiometry is constant with depth into the surface of Eris. Finally, we point out that our Eris spectrum is also consistent with a laboratory ice mixture consisting of 40% methane and 60% argon. Although we cannot rule out an argon rich surface, it seems more likely that nitrogen is the dominant species on Eris because the nitrogen ice 2.15 micron band is seen in spectra of Pluto and Triton., The manuscript has 44 pages, 15 figures, and four tables. We describe optical spectroscopic observations of the icy dwarf planet Eris with the 6.5 meter MMT telescope and the Red Channel Spectrograph. We report a correlation, that is at the edge of statistical significance, between blue shift and albedo at maximum absorption for five methane ice bands. We interpret the correlation as an increasing dilution of methane ice with another ice component, probably nitrogen, with increasing depth into the surface. We suggest a mechanism to explain the apparent increase in nitrogen with depth. Specifically, if we are seeing Eris 50 degrees from pole-on (Brown and Schaller, 2008), the pole we are seeing now at aphelion was in winter darkness at perihelion. Near perihelion, sublimation could have built up atmospheric pressure on the sunlit (summer) hemisphere sufficient to drive winds toward the dark (winter) hemisphere, where the winds would condense. Because nitrogen is more volatile and scarcer than methane, it sublimated from the sunlit hemisphere relatively early in the season, so the early summer atmosphere was nitrogen rich, and so was the ice deposited on the winter pole. Later in the season, much of the nitrogen was exhausted from the summer pole, but there was plenty of methane, which continued to sublimate. At this point, the atmosphere was more depleted in nitrogen, as was the ice freezing out on top of the earlier deposited nitrogen rich ice., This paper will appear in Icarus. Accurate absolute optical magnitude values ( H V and H R ) for Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) and Centaurs are becoming increasingly important as observations in other wavelengths, particularly SIRTF thermal infrared measurements, become available for large samples of objects. We present accurate H V and H R values for 90 KBOs and Centaurs, based on our published optical photometry. We find that our H V values are in good agreement with those available from the European photometric survey of minor bodies in the outer Solar System. Comparison with H V values from the JPL Horizons database and the Minor Planet Center database shows that these sources are systematically brighter than ours by about 0.3 mag.

We present optical photometry of the Centaur 5145 Pholus during 2003 May and 2004 April using the facility CCD camera on the 1.8-m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Mt. Graham, Arizona. We derive a double-peaked lightcurve and a rotation period of 9.980 ± 0.002 h for Pholus, consistent with periods of 9.9825 ± 0.004 and 9.9823 ± 0.0012 h by Buie and Bus (1992, Icarus 100, 288–294) and Farnham (2001, Icarus 152, 238–245). We find a lightcurve peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.60 mag, significantly larger than peak-to-peak amplitude determinations of 0.15 and 0.39 mag by Buie and Bus and Farnham. We use the three observed amplitudes and an amplitude-aspect model to derive four possible rotational pole positions as well as axial ratios of a / b = 1.9 and c / b = 0.9 . If we assume an albedo of 0.04, we find Pholus has dimensions of 310 × 160 × 150 km . If we assume Pholus is a strengthless rubble-pile and its non-spherical shape is due to rotational distortion, our axial ratios and period measurements indicate Pholus has a density of 0.5 g cm−3, suggestive of an ice-rich, porous interior. By combining B-band and R-band lightcurves, we find B − R = 1.94 ± 0.01 and any B − R color variation over the surface of Pholus must be smaller than 0.06 mag (i.e., much smaller than the 1.0 B − R 2.0 range seen among the Centaur and Kuiper belt object populations). By combining our V − R measurements with values in the literature, we find no evidence for any color variegation between the northern and southern hemispheres of Pholus. Observations of the Kuiper belt object 2004 DW (90482) over a time interval of seven hours show no color variation Our observations add to the growing body of evidence that individual Centaurs and KBOs exhibit homogeneous surface colors and hence gray impact craters on radiation reddened crusts are probably not responsible for the surprising range of colors seen among the Centaur and Kuiper belt object populations.

As a result of our continuing photometric survey, we report here optical colors for 36 Kuiper Belt objects, increasing our sample size to 91 objects. We find that certain dynamical classes of objects exhibit distinctive colors—21 out of 21 objects on small-inclination and small-eccentricity orbits with perihelion distances larger than 40 AU exhibit red surface colors (B-R > 1.5), while 17 out of 20 objects on large-inclination and large-eccentricity orbits with aphelion distances larger than 70 AU exhibit gray surface colors (B-R < 1.5). Our observations are consistent with a primordial origin for Kuiper Belt surface colors, if we assume that gray objects formed closer to the Sun than red objects, and as Neptune migrated outward it scattered gray objects onto dynamically hot orbits. By this model, the contrasting dynamically cold and red objects beyond 40 AU remained far enough away from Neptune that they were never perturbed by the planet.

From July 2001 to June 2002, an HST snapshot program obtained V, R and I photometry for 72 TNOs. The TNOs were sorted by dynamical class, and Spearman rank correlation statistics were calculated for each combination of color and orbital parameter. No strong correlations were found for the combined sample of TNOs, the resonant TNOs, or the non-resonant TNOs (classical). The results presented here suggest that if correlations reported by other authors are real, they are evident only at shorter wavelengths than observed in our survey.

Images of the trans-Neptunian objects 1997 CQ29 and 2000 CF105 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2 camera show them to be binary. The two components of 1997 CQ29 were separated in our images by 0.20 arcsec in November 2001 and by 0.33 arcsec in June/July 2002. The corresponding minimum physical distances are 6100 km and 10,200 km. The companion to 2000 CF105 was 0.78 arcsec from the primary, at least 23,400 km. Six other objects in the trans-Neptunian region, including Pluto and its moon Charon, are known to be binaries; 1997 CQ29 and 2000 CF105 are the seventh and eighth known pair. Binarity appears to be a not-uncommon characteristic in this region of the solar system, with detectable companions present in 4% of the objects we have examined.

The Kuiper belt stretches beyond the orbit of Neptune to an orbital distance of about 50 astronomical units from the Sun. The known objects in the Kuiper belt are icy bodies of up to about the size of Pluto, one of the biggest objects in the Kuiper belt. Centaurs are icy bodies that have escaped from the Kuiper belt by dynamical interaction with outer solar system bodies. This chapter describes the discoveries of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) and Centaurs and our knowledge about their physical properties, mostly from telescope observations. The data include brightnes, albedo and chemistry, diameter and mass, and period of rotation. The New Horizons mission will fly by Pluto as the first KBO in 2015 and possibly other KBOs thereafter.

We present new optical colors for 28 Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) and 35 Centaur objects measured with the 1.8 m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope and the 4.3 m Discovery Channel Telescope. By combining these new colors with our previously published colors, we increase the sample size of our survey to 154 objects. Our survey is unique in that the uncertainties in our color measurements are less than half the uncertainties in the color measurements reported by other researchers in the literature. Small uncertainties are essential for discerning between a unimodal and a bimodal distribution of colors for these objects as well as detecting correlations between colors and orbital elements. From our survey, it appears red Centaurs have a broader color distribution than gray Centaurs. We find red Centaurs have a smaller orbital inclination angle distribution than gray Centaurs at the 99.3% confidence level. Furthermore, we find that our entire sample of KBOs and Centaurs exhibits bimodal colors at the confidence level. KBOs and Centaurs with H V > 7.0 have bimodal colors at the 99.96% confidence level and KBOs with H V < 6.0 have bimodal colors at the 96% confidence level.

Very little is known about the physical properties of Kuiper-belt objects1, due to their relatively small size and large distance from the Earth. For example, a Kuiper-belt object with a diameter of 300 km at a typical distance of ∼30 AUwould subtend an angle of only 0.014 arcsec. It is therefore possible to investigate their surface markings, shapes and rotational properties only through variations in the light that they reflect (their light curves). Here we report a survey of optical light curves from Kuiper-belt objects. Variations are observed only for the faintest objects in the survey. We can rule out eclipsing binary objects and variations in the surface markings as the origin of these light curves, suggesting that the observed variations are due to the rotation of irregularly shaped objects. Irregular shapes may be limited to the smallest Kuiper-belt objects because the material strength in their inner regions is sufficient to maintain the shape against the weight of the overlying material. If, however, all of the objects in our survey are of essentially the same size, then the intrinsically faintest ones may be composed of a stronger and darker material than the brighter ones.

Solid CO2 films have been grown on a stainless steel substrate and processed by X-ray bombardment for up to 6 hr.. The reactions induced were monitored using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mass spectrometry. The XPS results are twofold: direct X-ray photolysis of the CO2 ice produced CO and an unidentified O product, possibly atomic O; secondary effects resulting from surface reactions between CO, O, and residual H from the vacuum environment produced H2CO, CH3OH, and a water ice cap on the CO2 film. The rate of production of CO from direct X-ray photolysis of CO2 is measured to be 5.4 × 102 molecule photon-1, corresponding to a formation cross section of 4.7 × 10-20 cm2. The growth rate for the water cap is calculated to be 2.6 × 10-4 monolayers s-1 for a partial pressure of H equal to 2 × 10-10 Torr. The appearance of gas-phase products from the film showed a time lag which indicates that the diffusion of the product species in the bulk CO2 is affected by some time-dependent process, possibly the creation of defects in the film. A model for the observed time dependence of the dissociation products in the gas phase yields diffusion coefficients in the CO2 of 5 × 10-12 and 1 × 10-12 cm2 s-1, for O and CO, respectively.

During the period of 96 Oct. 7.16 to Oct. 12.14 comet P/Wirtanen was observed with our CCD system at the 154 cm Catalina Observatory telescope at a heliocentric distance near 2.1 AU. The comet exhibited a coma of about 7 in in diameter with a tail of about 14 in. The observed B, V and R magnitudes within a 9.3 in diameter aperture were 19.94, 19.11 and 18.73, respectively. The large majority of our observations were carried out with a filter combining the V and R passbands (V+R). The average V+R magnitudes for Oct. 7.16, 8.14, 9.12 and 10.15, respectively, were 18.91, 18.87, 18,87 and 18.86. The data did not allow the extraction of a lightcurve but hopefully can be used in conjunction with other observations to constrain the comet's rotation period. An attempt to separate the nucleus contribution from the coma resulted in an upper limit to the nuclear magnitude of ≈20.6 in V+R at a phase of 26° or ≈19.6 at 0° phase angle. This results in an upper limit of 1.2 km for the comet's radius assuming a geometric albedo of 0.04. Calculating the Afϱ yielded a value of 7 cm which is a factor of 170 smaller than P/Halley at a comparable heliocentric distance and phase angle. Making the simple assumption that the comet's activity is proportional to its surface area makes the surface area of Wirtanen about 2.4 km2, equivalent to an effective radius of ≈0.44 km.

We present visible and near-infrared broadband photometry of the Centaur objects 1995 GO and 5145 Pholus. Our data confirm the extremely redV−Jcolor and nearly solarJ−HandH−Kcolors of 5145 Pholus. OurV−Jdata reveal that 1995 GO is as red as the reddest D-type asteroid, 1748 Mauderli, but not nearly as red as 5145 Pholus. We suggest that the red color of 1995 GO is probably due to the presence of organic-rich materials produced by eons of particle bombardment and ultraviolet irradiation of surface grains, a process that may be widespread among the Centaur and trans-neptunian object populations. We show that theV−Jdata for the Centaurs suggest thatV−Jincreases with increasing semimajor axis. If this correlation is correct, then the red colors of the Centaurs 5145 Pholus and 1993 HA2may be typical of fairly pristine Centaur objects. In contrast, the progressively less red colors of 1995 GO and 2060 Chiron may be the result of an increased rate of resurfacing of these objects as they migrate progressively closer to the Sun.

We present B–V and V–R colors for trans-neptunian objects (TNOs) 1994 TB and 1993 SC. We have found that these TNOs have colors almost as red as 5145 Pholus which are therefore consistent with surfaces rich in complex organic molecules. We have measured B–V colors of 1.10 ± 0.15 and 1.27 ± 0.11 for 1994 TB and 1993 SC, respectively, as well as V–R colors of 0.68 ± 0.06 and 0.70 ± 0.04 for 1994 TB and 1993 SC, respectively. Currently, there are only four TNOs with published broadband colors (1992 QB1, 1993 FW, 1993 SC, and 1994 TB). TNO colors range from solar (a single V–R measurement of 1993 FW in the literature) to nearly the reddest objects in the solar system (our measurements of 1993 SC and 1994 TB). Although we have concluded 1993 SC is a very red TNO, a measurement in the literature has suggested that there is nothing special about the color of 1993 SC. Because there are so few TNOs with color measurements and because colors for 1993 SC are inconsistent, we cannot say yet with any certainty whether the surfaces of TNOs exhibit a diversity of colors and hence a diversity of surface compositions.

Small near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) (

We present three near-infrared spectra of Pluto taken with the IRTF and SpeX, an optical spectrum of Triton taken with the MMT and the Red Channel Spectrograph, and previously published spectra of Pluto, Triton, and Eris. We combine these observations with a two-phase Hapke model, and gain insight into the ice mineralogy on Pluto, Triton, and Eris. Specifically, we measure the methane-nitrogen mixing ratio across and into the surfaces of these icy dwarf planets. In addition, we present a laboratory experiment that demonstrates it is essential to model methane bands in spectra of icy dwarf planets with two methane phases - one highly-diluted by nitrogen and the other rich in methane. For Pluto, we find bulk, hemisphere-averaged, methane abundances of 9.1 \pm 0.5%, 7.1 \pm 0.4%, and 8.2 \pm 0.3% for sub-Earth longitudes of 10\degree, 125\degree, and 257\degree. Application of the Wilcoxon rank sum test to our measurements finds these small differences are statistically significant. For Triton, we find bulk, hemisphere-averaged, methane abundances of 5.0 \pm 0.1% and 5.3 \pm 0.4% for sub-Earth longitudes of 138\degree and 314\degree. Application of the Wilcoxon rank sum test to our measurements finds the differences are not statistically significant. For Eris, we find a bulk, hemisphere-averaged, methane abundance of 10 \pm 2%. Pluto, Triton, and Eris do not exhibit a trend in methane-nitrogen mixing ratio with depth into their surfaces over the few cm range probed by these observations. This result is contrary to the expectation (Grundy & Stansberry 2000) that since visible light penetrates deeper into a nitrogen-rich surface than the depths from which thermal emission emerges, net radiative heating at depth would drive preferential sublimation of nitrogen leading to an increase in the methane abundance with depth., This paper will be published in Astrophysical Journal. The existence of strong absorption bands of singly deuterated methane (CH3D) at wavelengths where normal methane (CH4) absorbs comparatively weakly could enable remote measurement of D/H ratios in methane ice on outer solar system bodies. We performed laboratory transmission spectroscopy experiments, recording spectra at wavelengths from 1 to 6 \mum to study CH3D bands at 2.47, 2.87, and 4.56 \mum, wavelengths where ordinary methane absorption is weak. We report temperature-dependent absorption coefficients of these bands when the CH3D is diluted in CH4 ice and also when it is dissolved in N2 ice, and describe how these absorption coefficients can be combined with data from the literature to simulate arbitrary D/H ratio absorption coefficients for CH4 ice and for CH4 in N2 ice. We anticipate these results motivating new telescopic observations to measure D/H ratios in CH4 ice on Triton, Pluto, Eris, and Makemake., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Kuiper-belt objects (KBOs) are an ancient reservoir of comets beyond Neptune's orbit. Some of these objects were recently found to have the reddest optical colours in the Solar System, but the number of objects for which accurate colours were available was too small for any correlation to be discerned between colour and physical or dynamical properties, which might shed light on the origin of these objects. Here we report that all nine of the KBOs in our survey on near-circular (low-eccentricity) orbits with perihelion distances larger than 40 AU have extremely red surfaces, thereby connecting an observable property with a dynamical class. Of the objects with orbital eccentricities greater than 0.1, about half are also very red, while the rest have colours similar to the Sun, meaning that reflected sunlight is not strongly modified by the objects' surface properties. In addition, of the 13 'classical' KBOs (those with semimajor axis a approximately 45 AU and eccentricity e0.15), the ten that are very red are in orbits with small angles of inclination to the ecliptic, whereas the three with solar colours are all in high-inclination orbits. We suggest that these three 'grey' classical KBOs may be part of a dynamical group that is separate from the 'red' classical KBOs.

We present high signal precision optical reflectance spectra of 2005 FY9 taken with the Red Channel Spectrograph and the 6.5-m MMT telescope on 2006 March 4 UT (5000 - 9500 A; 6.33 A pixel-1) and 2007 February 12 UT (6600 - 8500 A; 1.93 A pixel-1). From cross correlation experiments between the 2006 March 4 spectrum and a pure CH4-ice Hapke model, we find the CH4-ice bands in the MMT spectrum are blueshifted by 3 +/- 4 A relative to bands in the pure CH4-ice Hapke spectrum. The higher resolution MMT spectrum of 2007 February 12 UT enabled us to measure shifts of individual CH4-ice bands. We find the 7296 A, 7862 A, and 7993 A CH4-ice bands are blueshifted by 4 +/- 2 A, 4 +/- 4 A, and 6 +/- 5 A. From four measurements we report here and one of our previously published measurements, we find the CH4-ice bands are shifted by 4 +/- 1 A. This small shift is important because it suggest the presence of another ice component on the surface of 2005 FY9. Laboratory experiments show that CH4-ice bands in spectra of CH4 mixed with other ices are blueshifted relative to bands in spectra of pure CH4-ice. A likely candidate for the other component is N2-ice because its weak 2.15 micron band and blueshifted CH4 bands are seen in spectra of Triton and Pluto. Assuming the shift is due to the presence of N2, spectra taken on two consecutive nights show no difference in CH4/N2. The Kuiper belt stretches beyond the orbit of Neptune to an orbital distance of about 50 astronomical units from the Sun. The known objects in the Kuiper belt are icy bodies of up to about the size of Pluto, one of the biggest objects in the Kuiper belt. Centaurs are icy bodies that have escaped from the Kuiper belt by dynamical interaction with outer solar system bodies. This chapter describes the discoveries of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) and Centaurs and our knowledge about their physical properties, mostly from telescope observations. The data include brightnes, albedo and chemistry, diameter and mass, and period of rotation. The New Horizons mission will fly by Pluto as the first KBO in 2015 and possibly other KBOs thereafter.

The discovery of the first member of the Kuiper belt1—a formerly hypothetical ancient reservoir of objects located beyond Neptune's orbit—started a revolution in our understanding of the outer Solar System: there is no longer a sharp edge at Pluto's orbit. About 60 Kuiper-belt objects, intermediate in size between comets and planets, are now known2 to exist on stable circular orbits around the Sun, and no doubt many more objects await discovery. But owing to the recent discovery and intrinsic faintness of these objects, little has been done to explore their physical and chemical properties3,4,5,6,7,8. Here we report the results of a two-year survey of the broad-band optical colours of about one-quarter of the known Kuiper-belt objects. We find that their colours indicate the presence of two distinct populations: one consists of objects whose surface colours are only slightly redder than the colour of the Sun, while the other consists of the reddest objects known in the Solar System.

We present high signal precision optical reflectance spectra of the large Kuiper belt objects 2005 FY9 and 2003 EL61. The spectrum of 2005 FY9 exhibits strong CH4-ice bands. A comparison between the spectrum and a Hapke model indicates the CH4 bands are shifted 3.25 +/- 2.25A relative to pure CH4-ice, suggesting the presence of another ice component on the surface of 2005 FY9, possibly N2-ice, CO-ice, or Ar. The spectrum of 2003 EL61 is remarkably featureless. There is a hint of an O2-ice band at 5773A; however, this feature needs to be confirmed by future spectroscopic observations of 2003 EL61 with a higher continuum signal precision, sufficient to detect a second weaker O2-ice band at 6275A., Comment: The paper will appear in the Astronomical Journal. We report the detection of a broad absorption band at 2165 cm-1 (4.619 microns) in the spectrum of L1551 IRS 5. New laboratory results over the 2200-2100 cm-1 wavenumber interval (4.55-4.76 microns), performed with realistic interstellar ice analogs, suggest that this feature is due to a CN-containing compound. We will refer to this compound as XCN. We also confirm the presence of frozen CO (both in nonpolar and polar matrices) through absorption bands at 2140 cm-1 (4.67 microns) and 2135 cm-1 (4.68 microns). The relative abundance of solid-state CO to frozen H2O is approximately 0.13 while the abundance of XCN seems comparable to that of frozen CO.

Optical and infrared observations of a bright object in the outer Solar System reveal it to be surprisingly large — almost as big as Pluto's moon. It could be the first of many such discoveries.

We obtained broadband photometry of the Trans-Neptunian Object 1993 SC with the Steward Observatory 1.5-m telescope near Mt. Bigelow, Arizona and the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory CCD on 8 October 1996. 1993 SC exhibited a constant brightness (V = 22.67) with a 1 sigma scatter about the average of 0.06 magnitudes during a five hour interval. In addition, we obtained observations of 1993 SC with the Steward Observatory 2.3-m telescope on Kitt Peak, Arizona during 24 - 27 November 1995. Once again 1993 SC exhibited a constant brightness (V = 22.73) with a 1 sigma scatter about the average of 0.04 magnitudes. If 1993 SC has a lightcurve, the amplitude must be at the level of 0.12 magnitudes or less. If the obliquity of 1993 SC is near zero degrees, then 1993 SC is spherical with a semi-major to semi-minor axis ratio less than or equal to 1.12. A spherical nature for 1993 SC may be the result of self gravity exceeding the tensile strength of the material in the interior of 1993 SC. If the obliquity of 1993 SC is large, then 1993 SC could have an irregular shape. The steady intrinsic brightness for 1993 SC suggests that the object has a relatively uniform surface albedo. Our photometry and the assumption of a comet-like albedo (0.04) indicates that the diameter of 1993 SC is ~ 240 km.

We report the detection of a broad absorption feature near 2166/cm in the spectrum of the Taurus cloud cource Elias 18. This pre-main-sequence source is the second in Taurus, the third in our survey, and the fifth known in the sky to show the broad 2166/cm absorption feature. Of equal importance, this feature is not seen toward several other embedded sources in our survey, nor is it seen toward the source Elias 16, located behind the Taurus cloud. Laboratory experiments with interstellar ice analogs show that such a feature is associated with a complex C triple bonded to N containing compound (called X(C triple bonded to N)) that results from high-energy processing (ultraviolet irradiation or ion bombardment) of simple ice components into more complex, organic components. We find a nonlinear anticorrelation between the abundance of X(C triple bonded to N) and frozen CO components in nonpolar lattices. We find no correlation between the abundance of X(C triple bonded to N) and frozen CO in polar lattices. Because the abundances of frozen CO and H2O are strongly correlated with each other and with visual extinction toward sources embedded in and located behind the Taurus molecular cloud, these ice components usually are associated with intracloud material. Our results indicate that X(C triple bonded to N) molecules result from chemical processing of dust grains dominated by nonpolar icy mantles in the local environments of pre-main-sequence stars. Such processing of icy grains in the early solar system may be an important source of organic compounds observed in minor solar system bodies. The delivery of these organic compounds to the surface of the primitive Earth through comet impacts may have provided the raw materials for prebiotic chemistry.

We present 3-5 micrometer spectra and a 2.2 micrometer polarimetric image of the T Tauri star RNO 91. We report the detection of three absorption bands centered at 3250 per cm (3.08 micrometer), 2139 per cm (4.68 micrometer), and 2165 per cm (4.62 micrometer) in spectra of RNO 91. These features are due to frozen H2O, CO, and possibly XCN along the line of sight toward RNO 91. Our 2187-2107 per cm spectrum of RNO 90, the only other T Tauri star in the dark cloud L43, does not show the CO or XCN absorption bands. By comparing our observed polarimetric image with modeled images of scattered light from bipolar nebulae or circumstellar disks as well as with known morphology of the RNO 91 bipolar outflow, we demonstrate that the reflection nebulosity seen in the near-infrared is most likely a circumstellar disklike structure with a radius of approximately 1700 AU. The location of both RNO 90 and RNO 91 in front of or near the front of L43 suggests that the intracloud optical depths toward both stars are small and, therefore, that the frozen H2O, CO, and XCN molecules are located on grains in circumstellar material around RNO 91 at distances from the central star of perhaps 10-1700 AU. This frozen material may represent precometary grains orbiting RNO 91.

Dramatic cometary outbursts have been noted by observers for many years. These outbursts can sometimes increase the apparent brightness of a comet up to 9 mag and release energy on the order of 10 exp 19 ergs. A number of mechanisms have been suggested for outburst activity; however, none has been generally accepted. HCN is a known constituent of both interstellar icy grain mantles and cometary nuclei, and HCN polymers have been postulated to exist on the dark surface of comets such as P/Halley. Since polymerization is a strongly exothermic process, we investigate the possibility that HCN polymerization can provide the energy needed for outbursts. Polymerization may be continuing in the inhomogeneous interior of comets. In addition, the reactive CN groups in these oligomers can be hydrolyzed and may contribute to CO2 and CO pressure buildup in the interior of comets.

Simultaneous visible and near-infrared spectra of Comet Austin were obtained wit the 1.5 m and 2.3 m telescopes of the University of Arizona Observatories on 1990 May 16. The visible spectrum obtained with the IHW spectrograph covers the 3126-9490 A wavelength interval, while the near-infrared spectrum obtained with the germanium spectrometer covers the 9036-12794 A wavelength interval. Simultaneous measurements of integrated band fluxes are presented for the CN B 2Sigma(+) - X 2Sigma(+) (violet) and A 2Pi - X 2Sigma(+) (red) systems. A CN spectrum and CN band flux ratios calculated from a fluoresence equilibrium model are also presented. From a comparison between the observed and calculated CN spectra and band flux ratios, it is found that red system oscillator strengths determined from recent ab initio calculations appropriately describe the radiative properties of CN molecules.

Evidence consistent with NH3 ice in the nucleus of Comet Brorsen-Metcalf as the source of the NH2 observed in the comet coma is presented. The distribution of NH2 is symmetric and shows no evidence for jet structure at the 3-sigma significance level above background emission. An azimuthal average of the NH2 image produces an NH2 surface brightness profile for Comet Brorsen-Metcalf which yields a factor of about-10 improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio over previous 1D long-slit NH2 observations, and provides a significant constraint on the NH2 photodissociation time scale in comets. A Monte Carlo simulation of the comet coma, assuming that NH2 is the primary source of NH2, is described and compared with the observations. For an observed production rate, Q(H2O) is approximately equal to 7 x 10 exp 28 molecules/s, collisional effects on the NH3 and NH2 outflow had at most an approximately 10-percent effect on the NH2 surface brightness profile. Because Comet Brorsen-Metcalf showed no significant dust or gas production rate variability, it is argued that steady state conditions best match the comet at the time of the observations.

NH2 emission band strengths were measured in four comets and the NH2 column densities were determined in order to measure the ammonia content of the comets. The mean ammonia/water abundance ratio derived for the four comets is found to be 0.13 + or - 0.06 percent, with no significant variation among the comets. The uniformity of this abundance attests to a remarkable degree of chemical homogeneity over large scales in the comet-forming region of the primordial solar nebula, and contrasts with the CO abundance variations found previously in comets. The N2 and NH3 abundances indicate a condensation temperature in the range 20-160 K, consistent with virtually all comet formation hypotheses.

Data on the nitrogen-containing compounds that observed spectroscopically in the coma of Comet Halley are summarized, and the elemental abundance of nitrogen in the Comet Halley nucleus is derived. It is found that 90 percent of elemental nitrogen is in the dust fraction of the coma, while in the gas fraction, most of the nitrogen is contained in NH3 and CN. The elemental nitrogen abundance in the ice component of the nucleus was found to be deficient by a factor of about 75, relative to the solar photosphere, indicating that the chemical partitioning of N2 into NH3 and other nitrogen compounds during the evolution of the solar nebula cannot account completely for the low abundance ratio N2/NH3 = 0.1, observed in the comet. It is suggested that the low N2/NH3 ratio in Comet Halley may be explained simply by physical fractionation and/or thermal diffusion.

Spectra of comets Halley, Hartley-Good, Thiele and Borrelly were obtained with the 4-m telescopes at Cerro Tololo and Kitt Peak Observatories and with the Multiple Mirror Telescope. The emission band strengths of the NH 2 bands were measured to determine NH 2 column densities in all four comets. Production rates which were determined using two independent models (Haser and vectorial) agree within the observational errors and indicate that a simple two-step decay model approximates well the distribution of NH 2 in the comae of these four comets. If the observed NH 2 derives from a single parent with a point-source origin, the most likely parent is NH 3 which for the photolytic process, NH 3 + hν → NH 2 + H , has a branching ratio ∼95%. This branching ratio leads to ammonia-to-water abundance ratios ranging from 0.01% to 0.4% in the four comets, indicative of significant differences. Three independent determinations of the ratio in comet Halley give Q ( NH 3 )/ Q ( H 2 O ) = 0.002 ± 0.001. No significant difference in the ammonia abundance was found before and after perihelion in comet Halley, which indicates that the ice component of the nucleus is chemically homogeneous within the observational uncertainties. The ammonia abundance ratio determined for comet Halley 14 March 1986 is an order of magnitude smaller than that inferred from the spacecraft ion mass spectrometer data.
