2. Performance and cost evaluations of synthetic resin technology for the removal of methyl tert-butyl ether from drinking water

Abstract

This study investigated the performance of synthetic carbonaceous resin technology for the treatment of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) contaminated waters using rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs). The RSSCTs were conducted using Ambersorb 563 carbonaceous resin (Rohm and Haas Corp., Philadelphia, Pa.) under multisolute conditions of typical municipal water source, soluble fuel components or additive/by-product, and MTBE. Specifically. one RSSCT column run was conducted with groundwater from Arcadia Well field, Santa Monica, Calif., with tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and MTBE, while the other RSSCT column run was performed with surface water from Lake Perris, Calif., with benzene, toluene, p-xylene (BTX) and MTBE. The results obtained were compared to RSSCTs performed using PCB coconut shell granulated activated carbon (GAC) (Calgon Corp., Philadelphia, Pa.). The adsorbent comparisons indicate that the performance (as characterized by indicators such as carbon usage rates or integrated column capacity) of the Ambersorb 563 synthetic resin in multisolute conditions of TBA or BTEX with MTBE in typical municipal water source is significantly superior to that of the coconut shell PCB GAC. Cost comparison for the coconut shell GAC and synthetic resin system was also performed. Under multisolute conditions of typical municipal water source, flow rates, and influent MTBE concentrations, the cost of the resin system, for most of the scenarios evaluated, is demonstrated to be significantly lower than the complementary GAC system under the costing procedure used. Further, when soluble fuel components such as BTX or fuel additives/byproducts such as TBA were present along with MTBE, the predicted higher adsorbent usage rates for the coconut shell GAC were translated into significantly higher treatment costs relative to the synthetic carbonaceous resin system. Abstract

Tests on compost odor control were performed with an ash material made of incinerated whole tree chips. Various amounts of ash/compost volume ratios were used, and emissions were measured for volatile fatty acids, sulfur compounds, aldehydes and ketones, and ammonia. Ash was found to be an effective and economic means of odor control.

Abstract

The United States has seen resurgence in petroleum production, mainly driven by technology improvements in unconventional oil and gas stimulation from shale formations. Hydraulic fracturing, one of the unconventional oil and gas stimulation technologies, has caught a lot of public attention that has led to more research on it and its impacts as well increased debate over more regulatory oversight. Other unconventional oil stimulation techniques have more or less been left out of the discussion. One of these less frequently discussed techniques is acidizing. Acidizing is a term used for all types of acid use that increase or keep up well productivity or injectivity. The use of these unconventional stimulation techniques has greatly increased over the past decade. The expansion of tight oil and shale gas extraction using unconventional oil stimulation has raised concerns about its potential environmental and health impacts. These concerns include potential direct impacts to groundwater and surface water quality, water supplies, and air quality. Much attention has been on the impacts of hydraulic fracturing with little to no attention on acidizing. This research looks at the acidizing process and for the first time defines what the chemicals of acidization are, in what amount they are used, and what their toxicity is. The analysis of the present data shows there have been over 600 instances of acidizing in urbanized Southern and Central California from April 2013 to August 2015. Although most of the chemicals of acidizing are similar to hydraulic fracturing, those used most frequently are different. There are close to 200 specific chemicals used in acidization, with at least 28 of them being F-graded hazardous chemicals, which are known carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, or high acute toxicity chemicals.
