Abstract

Calorimetric measurements of AC loss are made on [Nb.sub.3]Sn Rutherford cables furnished with cores in the face-on (FO) and edge-on (EO) orientations of the applied AC field. The losses of the partial width cables are relatively high due to drifting of the narrower cores and shrinkage of the effective width of the widest core as a result of severe texturization.

Abstract

Calorimetric and magnetic AC loss measurements are made on a pair of technology quadrupole (TQ) class cables, one with and the other without a stainless steel core. The coupling losses are compared to the cables' hysteretic losses determined at the same time, the latter being compared to the magnetically measured hysteretic losses of individual strand segments.

The growth kinetics of the fine grain A15 layer in the multifilamentary composites are examined at different reaction temperatures for samples with varying Cu-Sn ratios. The variation of grain size and morphology with temperature and composition and the activation energy for grain growth in the fine and coarse grain A15 regions are studied.

The testing of a react and wind coil with a 56 cm bore and 828 m of Mg[B.sub.2] wire is discussed. Findings reveal that the react and wind coil achieved 168 A and 0.17 T at 5 K.

Abstract

A finite element method (FEM) was used for the numerical modeling of transport ac losses of parallel arrays of superconducting tapes of an elliptical cross-section carrying mutually anti-parallel critical currents. Findings reveal that an x-array increased the losses, whereas a y-array declined them.

The current limiting properties of different kinds of Mg[B.sub.2] wires at 50 Hz in the temperature range of 20-30 K are examined. Findings reveal fast transition to the normal state during the first half of the first cycle and a limiting effect during the subsequent six cycles.

Investigating the effects of resistivity of Bi:2223/Ag multifilmentary strands at higher temperatures is larger than expected from the standard Block-Gruneisen expression is discussed. The influence of these factors on effective resistivity of the Bi:2223/Ag composite is successfully described by a simple analytical model.

Investigating the finite element method (FEM) used to discuss the hydrostatic extrusion of Nb/bronze mono-core rods and to compute the stress, strain and temperature distribution in the billet is presented. It shows that the peak temperature occurs at the surface of the billet and a larger extrusion ratio corresponds to a higher peak temperature.

Investigating the rod-in-tube technique developed for the fabrication of Nb3Sn precursor wire for RHQ treatment is discussed. It is concluded that the addition of Bi seems not to negatively influence the superconducting the properties of Nb3Sn.

Exploring the characteristics of flux jumping in high performance Nb3Sn strands for HEP and other applications have been discussed. The difference in flux jump character at high and low fields is observes and is attributed to increase FJ instability in higher fields.
