The increasing demand for heating/cooling is of grave concern due to the ever-increasing population. One method that addresses this issue and uses renewable energy is Thermochemical Energy Storage (TCES), which is based on the reversible chemical reactions and/or sorption processes of gases in solids or liquids. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), composed of transition metal ions (Zn, Co, etc.) and imidazolate linkers, have gained significant interest recently as porous adsorbents in low temperature sorption-based TES (sun/waste heat). In this study, we examined two different sodalite-type ZIF structures (ZIF-8 and ZIF-90) for their potential heat storage applications, based on the adsorption of water, methanol and ethanol as adsorbates. Both ZIF structures were analysed using PXRD, TGA, SEM and N2 physisorption while the % adsorbate uptake and desorption enthalpy was evaluated using TGA and DSC analysis, respectively. Among the studied adsorbent–adsorbate pairs, ZIF-90-water showed the highest desorption enthalpy, the fastest sorption kinetics and, therefore, the best potential for use in heat storage/reallocation applications. This was due to its significantly smaller particle size and higher specific surface area, and the presence of mesoporosity as well as polar groups in ZIF-90 when compared to ZIF-8.

Microporous triclinic AlPO4-34, known as APO-Tric, serves as an excellent water adsorbent in thermal energy storage, especially for low temperature thermochemical energy storage. Increased water adsorption capacity of thermochemical material usually leads to higher thermal energy storage capacity, thus offering improved performance of the adsorbent. The main disadvantage of aluminophosphate-based TCM materials is their high cost due to the use of expensive organic templates acting as structure directing agents. Using ionic liquids as low cost solvents with associated structure directing role can increase the availability of these water adsorbents for TES applications. Here, a green synthesis of APO-Tric crystals at elevated and ambient pressure by using 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide ionic liquid is presented. Large 200 µm romboid shaped monocrystals were obtained at 200 °C after 6 days. The structure of APO-Tric and the presence of 1,3-dimetylimidazolium cation in the micropores were determined by single crystal XRD at room temperature and 150 K. Water sorption capacity of APO-Tric prepared by ionothermal synthesis at elevated pressure increased in comparison to the material obtained at hydrothermal synthesis most probably due to additional structural defects obtained after calcination. The reuse of exhausted ionic liquid was also confirmed, which adds to the reduction of toxicity and cost production of the aluminophosphate synthesis.

Cellulose obtained from oat hulls by bleaching with peracetic acid was modified, employing an ultrasound method that resulted in an esterification reaction with different vegetable oils (soybean, sunflower, and coconut) to produce modified cellulose (MC) with increased hydrophobicity. MC samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and their wettability and oil and water absorption capacities. FTIR indicated that the reaction occurred with all oils, which was observed by forming a new band associated with ester carbonyl groups at 1747 cm−1. The modification did not affect the crystalline structure or surface morphology of the cellulose. MC samples modified with all oil sources showed a 6 to 9-fold decrease in water absorption capacity, a 3-fold increase in oil absorption capacity, and a higher affinity for nonpolar solvents. The modified samples adsorbed lower amounts of water at a slower rate. Different oil sources did not affect the main properties of MC. The ultrasonication-assisted process was not only effective in modifying cellulose by esterification with vegetable oils but was also an eco-friendly and simple strategy that does not require toxic reagents, providing reassurance of its sustainability.

In this study, the ability of natural hemp fibers (HF) to act as fillers in biodegradable biocomposites has been evaluated by mixing different concentrations of HF with commercially- available biodegradable polyesters, aiming at incorporating the maximum amount of HF to obtain a cost-effective new material in a sustainable approach. Blends of poly(hydroxy‑butyrate) (PHBV) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) were used as polymeric matrix. HF were washed and ground before use. They were mainly composed of lignin (̴ 22 %) and carbohydrates (̴ 62–67 %) but a significant amount of proteins (̴ 8.77 %) was also detected. The polymer-HF composites were produced by melt-compounding using mild conditions and shaped as films by compression-molding to obtain test specimens used in the characterization of the biocomposites. The effect of HF loading on the final performance of the biocomposites was investigated. Interestingly, up of 40 % of HF could be incorporated as fillers into the PHBV-PBAT polymeric matrix. The incorporation of HF improved mechanical performance when compared to the polyester blends. In order to reduce its water sensitivity of the composites, food-grade beeswax or carnauba wax were incorporated within the polymeric matrix filled with HF, and the resulting biocomposites showed similar mechanical properties than their counterparts prepared without waxes but displayed significantly higher hydrophobicity.

Two genera (Chamaemyces and Hydropus) and 20 species of fungi were recorded for the first time for the Montenegrin funga (mycobiota), comprising 27 records from seven municipalities. Basic geographical and ecological data are given for all the records. Each species is shown with a photograph of the basidiomata in the field and is briefly annotated.

Brazil is a country with strong agricultural production, annually producing a large amount of lignocellulosic residues. The valorization of these residues as ingredients for the food industry aims at environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Coffee hull is a by-product generated by the coffee industry that can be used to produce new food ingredients with high added value. This study aimed to obtain a multifunctional fiber-rich ingredient from a coffee hull using a one-step process based on reactive extrusion with alkaline hydrogen peroxide or sulfuric acid. For this purpose, we submitted a coffee hull to extrusion with sulfuric (1% and 3%) acid or alkaline hydrogen peroxide (1% and 3%) in one-step processes. Then, the obtained materials were characterized through their physicochemical and techno-functional properties. All treated samples had an increase in their cellulose and insoluble dietary fiber contents and also presented an increase in their porosity as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The sample modified with 3% alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP3) had the highest cellulose content (45.17%), insoluble dietary fiber (78.20%), density (3.54), water absorption capacity (1.96 g/g), and oil absorption capacity (0.86 g/g). All samples had thermal stability from room temperature to 300 °C and in all samples, the crystallinity indexes decreased after treatment. Reactive extrusion was effective in modifying the coffee hull. Our study proposes a green route to obtain a higher value-added product from lignocellulosic waste, with some advantages including short reaction times, low reagents concentrations, little or no effluent generation, and the possibility of scaling to industrial scale.

In this study, a better knowledge of the influence of cross-linking mechanism on the mechanical properties of starch films is presented. Thus, waxy starch and cassava starch films, cross-linked with trisodium trimetaphosphate (STMP), were produced and characterized concerning their morphology, transport, and mechanical properties. Starch cross-linking was verified by RAMAN spectroscopy and by iodine binding capacity (IBC) values, which were determined by color analysis of digital images. Although cross-linking affects the morphology and crystallinity of the films, it was not observed a relationship between the mechanism of the cross-linking reaction of the starch chain (amylose-amylopectin and amylopectin-amylopectin) and the transport properties. The lower Young Modulus and IBC value and the higher elongation at break observed for cross-linking cassava starch films relative to control and waxy films indicate that cross-linking mechanism influences the mechanical properties of starch films and should be considered to tailor the final properties of packaging and biobased products.

A totally green process based on reactive extrusion was used for the production of cassava starch hydrogels through reaction with two organic crosslinking agents, citric (CA) and tartaric (TA) acids. CA and TA were used at different concentrations (0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, and 20.0%). Degree of substitution (DS) of hydrogels ranged from 0.023 to 0.365. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed a new band appearing at 1730 cm−1 associated with ester carbonyl groups. X-ray diffraction indicated that reactive extrusion resulted in the disappearance of diffraction peaks of native starch and samples with lower crystallinity indices ranging from 37% (native starch) to 8–11% in starch hydrogels. Morphology analysis showed that the original granular structure of starch was lost and replaced by a rougher and irregular structure. Water holding capacity values of starch hydrogels obtained by reactive extrusion were superior to those of native starch and the control sample (extruded without the crosslinking agents). Hydrogels obtained with the highest CA or TA concentration (20.0%) resulted in the higher DS and swelling capacities, resulting in samples with 870 and 810% of water retention, respectively. Reactive extrusion was effective in obtaining starch hydrogels by reaction with organic acids.

Orange bagasse (OB) could be considered a sustainable, renewable, and low-cost biomass for the extraction of cellulose. In this context, reactive extrusion can be considered an excellent, eco-friendly, alternative process for the extraction of cellulose from lignocellulosic materials. Thus, the present study aimed to obtain cellulose-based materials with a reactive extrusion process and also to investigate the impact of pectin on the delignification process. Two groups of samples (OB and depectinizated OB) were submitted to extrusion with sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide in one-step processes. The cellulose content of extruded materials was highly affected by pectin content in the raw material; the thermal profile (TGA curves) and crystallinity also changed. The cellulose content of modified materials ranged from 18.8% to 58.4%, with a process yield of 30.6% to 79.2%. The alkaline reagent provided the highest cellulose content among all extrusion treatments tested, mainly for OB without pectin. The extrusion process was considered an efficient and promising process for extracting cellulose from citrus residue. Materials produced in this study can be used as sources of cellulose fiber for various products and processes, such as in the food industry, fermentation substrates, or refined applications after subsequent treatments.

As a potential candidate for membership in the European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country committed to the Euro-Atlantic integration process has committed itself to strengthening the rule of law and strengthening institutions in the field of justice and home affairs. One of the important activities in this process is the adoption and implementation of public policies in the field of combating money laundering, bearing in mind that this social scourge in its manifestations is the greatest threat to the stability and smooth functioning of a country. Money laundering is a global problem of the twenty-first century. As a form of economic crime, the money laundering process is represented both nationally and internationally. Although there are a large number of definitions of money laundering, it can be said that it consists of shorter or longer movements of funds acquired through illegal activities, in order to obtain seemingly legal means through the cycle of transformation. The complexity of the fight against money laundering and the problems of combating various forms of money laundering go beyond the possibilities and efforts undertaken by the competent authorities and government institutions. All countries should go ahead of money launderers, that is, they should go ahead in designing and prescribing methods and ways of fighting, but they should also not allow criminals to use a corrupt and unregulated institutional framework and gain lucrative money laundering income.

Cellulose is a natural, unbranched, and fibrous homopolymer that is a major component in several agroindustrial residues. The aim of this study was to extract cellulose from oat hulls and then to modify it using a green route to obtain esterified cellulose through reaction with organic acids employing the reactive extrusion process, which is a process that presents some advantages, including low effluent generation, short reaction times, and it is scalable for large scale use. Citric (CA) and succinic (SA) acids were employed as esterifying agents in different concentrations (0, 5, 12.5, and 20%). Modified cellulose samples were characterized by their degree of substitution (DS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (DRX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wettability, oil and water absorption capacities, and thermal stability. DS of modified samples ranged from 2.28 to 3.00, and FTIR results showed that the esterification occurred in all samples for both acids by observation of important bands at 1720 and 1737 cm−1 for samples modified with CA and SA, respectively. All modified samples presented increased hydrophobicity. The modification did not have an influence on the morphological structure or crystallinity pattern of all samples. This study proved to be possible to modify cellulose using a simple and ecofriendly process based on reactive extrusion with organic acids.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the composition and techno-functional properties of fiber-rich ingredients that were obtained from three agroindustrial residues (oat, soybean, and coffee hulls) through a one-step hydrothermal-chemical combined process. The residues were subjected to an alkaline hydrogen peroxide treatment (2%, pH 11.5) combined with a hydrothermal treatment in an autoclave (121 °C/30 min/1.5 atm). Ash, protein, and lipid contents decreased for all residues, and total (up to 86 g/100 g) and insoluble dietary (up to 83 g/100 g) fiber contents increased for all processed residues. All treated samples exhibited an increase in hydration capacity, with values ranging from 5.2 to 6.6 g/g of water absorption capacity and 5.6 to 5.7 g/g of swelling capacity. The one-step process was efficient in improving the nutritional and techno-functional quality of the residues of oat, soybean, and coffee, and it can be considered a promising alternative for future obtaining of new fiber-rich ingredients.

This study aimed to produce modified cellulose extracted from oat hulls by an esterification reaction with citric acid (CA) employing ultrasonication and reactive extrusion assisted processes. Modified samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (DRX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wettability, oil and water absorption capacities, water adsorption capacity, and thermal stability. From FTIR results it can be observed a new band for all modified samples at 1735 cm−1, confirming the esterification. The morphology and crystallinity pattern of fibers were not affected by esterification, and crystallinity indexes ranged from 43% (unmodified cellulose) to 44–49% in modified samples. Both groups of samples, obtained by ultrasonication and reactive extrusion, showed decreases in water absorption capacities (1.63–1.71 g/g) compared to unmodified cellulose (9.38 g/g). It was observed an increase in oil retention capacity from 1.80 g/g (unmodified cellulose) to 4.57–7.31 g/g after esterification, and also the modified samples presented higher affinity by a non-polar solvent in the wettability test. The new properties of modified cellulose expand its use in the industry and prove that ultrasonication and reactive extrusion can be used to obtain esterified cellulose, being eco-friendly, simple, and convenient processes with short reaction times.

The subject of this review is to discuss some aspects related to the use of biopolymeric matrices as carriers for plant-growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) in agricultural systems as a possible technological solution for the establishment of agricultural production practices that result in fewer adverse impacts on the environment, reporting some promising and interesting results on the topic. Results from the encapsulation of different PGPB on alginate, starch, chitosan, and gelatin matrices are discussed, systematizing some advances made in this area of knowledge in recent years. Encapsulation of these bacteria has been shown to be an effective method for protecting them from unsuitable environments, and these new products that can act as biofertilizers and biopesticides play an important role in the establishment of a sustainable and modern agriculture. These new products are technological solutions for replacing deleterious chemical fertilizers and pesticides, maintaining soil fertility and stability, and improving crop productivity and food security. Finally, in the near future, scale-up studies will have to provide new information about the large-scale production of these materials as well as their application in the field under different biotic and abiotic stress conditions.

Despite the considerable progress toward the eradication of meningococcal disease with the introduction of glycoconjugate vaccines, previously unremarkable serogroup X has emerged in recent years, recording several outbreaks throughout the African continent. Different serogroup X polysaccharide-based vaccines have been tested in preclinical trials, establishing the principles for further improvement. To elucidate the antigenic determinants of the MenX capsular polysaccharide, we generated a monoclonal antibody, and its bactericidal nature was confirmed using the rabbit serum bactericidal assay. The antibody was tested by the inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and surface plasmon resonance against a set of oligosaccharide fragments of different lengths. The epitope was shown to be contained within five to six α-(1–4) phosphodiester mannosamine repeating units. The molecular interactions between the protective monoclonal antibody and the MenX capsular polysaccharide fragment were further detailed at the atomic level by saturation transfer difference nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The NMR results were used for validation of the in silico docking analysis between the X-ray crystal structure of the antibody (Fab fragment) and the modeled hexamer oligosaccharide. The antibody recognizes the MenX fragment by binding all six repeating units of the oligosaccharide via hydrogen bonding, salt bridges, and hydrophobic interactions. In vivo studies demonstrated that conjugates containing five to six repeating units can produce high functional antibody levels. These results provide an insight into the molecular basis of MenX vaccine-induced protection and highlight the requirements for the epitope-based vaccine design.

The objective of this work was to manufacture biodegradable films based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and also to evaluate the effect of the different degrees of hydrolysis (DH) and degrees of polymerization (DP) of PVA on the properties of these films. Four different types of PVA with DH ranging from 88.0 to 98.4% and DP ranging from 150 to 2000 were used to produce the films by casting, and glycerol was used as plasticizer. Films based on PVA with lower DH (SelvolTM 540 and 203) showed higher solubility, water vapor permeability and water sorption capacity, and also were less rigid, and had lower glass transition and melting temperatures when compared to films obtained from higher DH PVA (SelvolTM 325 and 107). The DP affected the solubility of the films, the film produced with the higher DP (SelvolTM 325 - DP = 1000????1500) showed lower solubility value. Films based on PVA with higher DP (SelvolTM 540 and 325) showed higher elongation values. Both DH and DP affected PVA films properties, resulting in materials with different possibilities of applications, however, it was observed that however the effect of DH was most important for PVA films properties than DP effect.

The use of starches in food and materials areas requires processing at elevated temperatures. The study of thermal degradation kinetics of starches and their relationship with amylose content, crystallinity, viscosity and thermal properties can help to design the processing conditions. The crystallinity and ordering of corn, cassava and waxy maize starches determined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. Correlation between crystallinity, viscosity and amylose content was found. The kinetic parameters (activation energy (Ea), order and pre-exponential factor (A)) were determined through three models: Coats-Redfern, Broido and van Klevelen, using the best linear fit method. The overall order of thermal degradation process of all the starches was found to be of first order. The Ea increases following the order: corn < cassava < waxy maize. The higher A and Ea values found for waxy maize starch indicate that structural differences influence the thermal degradation process.

Studies assessing the dynamics and duration of antibody responses following SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination are an invaluable tool for vaccination schedule planning, assessment of risk groups and management of pandemics. In this study, we developed and employed ELISA assays to analyze the humoral responses to Nucleocapsid and Spike proteins in vaccinated health-care workers (HCW) and critically ill COVID-19 patients. Sera of more than 1000 HCWs and critically ill patients from the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka were tested across a one-year period, encompassing the spread of major SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs). We observed 97% of seroconversion in HCW cohort as well as sustained anti-Spike antibody response in vaccinees for more than 6 months. In contrast, the infection-induced anti-Nucleocapsid response was waning significantly in a six-month period. Furthermore, a substantial decrease in vaccinees’ anti-Spike antibodies binding to Spike protein of Omicron VOC was also observed. Critically ill COVID-19 patients had higher levels of anti-Spike and anti-Nucleocapsid antibodies compared to HCWs. No significant differences in anti-Spike and anti-Nucleocapsid antibody levels between the critically ill COVID-19 patients that were on non-invasive oxygen supplementation and those on invasive ventilation support were observed. However, stronger anti-Spike, but not anti-Nucleocapsid, antibody response correlated with a better disease outcome in the cohort of patients on invasive ventilation support. Altogether, our results contribute to the growing pool of data on humoral responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination.

Abstract The aims of this work were to produce hyaluronic acid (HA) by Streptococcus zooepidemicus ATCC 39920 in a low cost sugarcane molasses fermentation medium and to employ the produced HA to obtain films blends based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The films were produced using solution casting method and they were characterized according to their microstructure, mechanical and barrier properties. HA was added in different concentrations (0, 5, 10 and 15% (w/w)), and glycerol was used as a plasticizer (25 g/100 g solids). All formulations resulted in easily manipulated films with good appearance. The addition of HA on PVA films increased their thermal stability, solubility, swelling index, water vapor permeability and elongation. Microbial HA sample combined with PVA showed to be a promising material to biomedical application, and an addition between 5 and 10% (w/w) was sufficient to improve PVA films properties.

Abstract The objectives of this work were to determine the biodegradability of starch/glycerol foam and of poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/starch film using respirometric methods and also to compare these results with conventional polymers – expanded polystyrene and low-density polyethylene. A matured organic compost was utilized as inoculum and sucrose was used as positive reference material. Biodegradation efficiencies (BE) after 47 days were: 35% for sucrose; 34% for starch/glycerol; and 38% for PBAT/starch. Starch/glycerol and PBAT/starch presented BE statistically equal to sucrose, whilst both the conventional packaging used were not degraded (p> 0.05). Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses showed that the microbiota rather degraded the starch over the PBAT in the PBAT/starch blend, and also that some starch remained intact in the internal polymeric matrix. This study verified that starch/glycerol foam and PBAT/starch film are highly biodegradable materials and may then be used to enhance the biodegradability of some products such as disposable trays and supermarket bags.

In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic sparked a global crisis that continues to pose a serious threat to human health and the economy. Further advancement in research is necessary and requires the availability of quality molecular tools, including monoclonal antibodies. Here, we present the development and characterization of a collection of over 40 new monoclonal antibodies directed against different SARS-CoV-2 proteins. Recombinant SARS-CoV-2 proteins were expressed, purified, and used as immunogens. Upon development of specific hybridomas, the obtained monoclonal antibody (mAb) clones were tested for binding to recombinant proteins and infected cells. We generated mAbs against structural proteins, the Spike and Nucleocapsid protein, several non-structural proteins (nsp1, nsp7, nsp8, nsp9, nsp10, nsp16) and accessory factors (ORF3a, ORF9b) applicable in flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, or Western blot. Our collection of mAbs provides a set of novel, highly specific tools that will allow a comprehensive analysis of the viral proteome, which will allow further understanding of SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis and the design of therapeutic strategies.

Introduction: According to the International Urogynecological Association and International Continence Society people with normal pelvic floor muscle function should have the ability to voluntarily and involuntarily contract and relax these muscles. However, many women are unaware of their pelvic floor, and it is estimated that about 30–50% do not know how to actively contract these muscles. Within this context, therapeutic strategies to improve pelvic floor muscle strength and function are particularly relevant. Aims: To compare the use of an intravaginal vibratory stimulus (IVVS) versus intravaginal electrical stimulation (IVES) on pelvic floor muscle functionality in women with pelvic floor dysfunctions who cannot voluntarily contract these muscles. Materials and methods: Randomized clinical trial performed at a tertiary care hospital from June 2016 to September 2017. The sample comprised adult women with pelvic floor dysfunction who were unable to contract their pelvic floor muscles voluntarily. Women with latex allergy or other allergies in the pelvic region, vaginal or urinary tract infection, gynecological cancer, significant pain on palpation, or pelvic floor training over the preceding 6 months were excluded. After baseline assessment, women that met the inclusion criteria were randomized to receive once-weekly 20-minute sessions of IVVS or IVES for 6 weeks. Results: Twenty-one women were randomly assigned to each group; 18 completed the IVVS and 17 completed the IVES protocols. The IVVS group presented a significant increase in PFM strength in relation to the IVES group (p = 0.026). There was a significant interaction between time and type of intervention for the same variable (p = 0.008) in the IVVS group. Conclusion: Both techniques were beneficial, but IVVS was significantly superior to IVES in improving pevic floor muscle strength. Additional studies are warranted to consolidate the utility of IVVS as a treatment modality for pelvic floor dysfunction. Keywords: Vibration, Electric stimulation, Physical therapy, Pelvic floor

Changes in protein glycosylation are related to different diseases and have a potential as diagnostic and prognostic disease biomarkers. Transferrin (Tf) glycosylation changes are common marker for congenital disorders of glycosylation. However, biological interindividual variability of Tf N-glycosylation and genes involved in glycosylation regulation are not known. Therefore, high-throughput Tf isolation method and large scale glycosylation studies are needed in order to address these questions. Due to their unique chromatographic properties, the use of chromatographic monoliths enables very fast analysis cycle, thus significantly increasing sample preparation throughput. Here, we are describing characterization of novel immunoaffinity-based monolithic columns in a 96-well plate format for specific high-throughput purification of human Tf from blood plasma. We optimized the isolation and glycan preparation procedure for subsequent ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) analysis of Tf N-glycosylation and managed to increase the sensitivity for approximately three times compared to initial experimental conditions, with very good reproducibility. Rice hull is a residue from agro-industry that can be used to produce nanocellulose. We produced nanocellulose from rice hulls through bleaching (with a 5% NaOH solution followed by a peracetic acid solution) and acid hydrolysis at a mild temperature (45ºC) followed by ultrasonication. We investigated the microstructure, crystallinity and thermal stability of these materials and studied their effects on the properties of starch films. After bleaching, the compact structure around the cellulosic fibers was removed, and the lignin content of the residue decreased from 7.22 to 4.22%. The obtained nanocellulose presented a higher crystallinity (up 70%), higher thermal stability than the raw material and lignin contents below 0.35%. The nanocellulose formed interconnected webs of tiny fibers (< 100 nm in diameter), which decreased the opacity, water vapor permeability and improved the mechanical properties when added as reinforcement in the starch films.

AbstractThe demand for renewably sourced biodegradable materials has increased the need to produce materials that combine appropriate functional properties at competitive costs. Thermoplastic starch and polyester blends are an interesting alternative to current materials due to the low cost of starch and the functional properties and processability of the resulting blends. Producing thermoplastic starch (TPS) requires using a plasticiser at concentrations between 20 and 30%wt (in relation to starch). Glycerol is the most common plasticiser due to its high plasticising capacity and thermal stability at processing temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate glycerol waste from the biodiesel industry, with different degrees of purification, as plasticisers for TPS / poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends. Different purities of glycerol produced films with similar mechanical, optical and barrier properties to those made with purified glycerol (99.7%). Therefore, crude glycerol is a renewable alternative plasticiser that reduces the cost of plasticisation by 6-fold.

ResumoForam produzidos 12 laminados com diferentes proporções de amido de mandioca, poli(vinil álcool) (PVA) e glicerol por extrusão usando um planejamento de mistura. A opacidade dos materiais variou entre 31 e 56%, e a concentração de PVA e a interação entre as concentrações de amido e PVA foram os principais responsáveis pelo aumento da opacidade. A diferença de cor (ΔE*) variou entre 20-30, sendo a concentração de amido o principal responsável pelo aumento da diferença de cor, por promover uma coloração mais amarelada nos laminados.

The objectives of this work were to investigate the microstructure, crystallinity and thermal stability of nanofibrillated cellulose obtained from oat hulls using bleaching and acid hydrolysis at a mild temperature (45 ºC) followed by ultrasonication. The oat hulls were bleached with peracetic acid, and after bleaching, the compact structure around the cellulosic fibers was removed, and the bundles became individualized. The extraction time (30 or 60 min) did not affect the properties of the nanofibrillated cellulose, which presented a higher crystallinity index and thermal stability than the raw material (oat hulls). The nanocellulose formed interconnected webs of tiny fibers with diameters of 70-100 nm and lengths of several micrometers, producing nanofibers with a relatively high aspect ratio, thus indicating that these materials are suitable for polymer reinforcement.

This study aims to prepare biodegradable films from cassava starch, poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and montmorillonite (MMT) using blow-extrusion process and analyze the effects of different types and concentrations of MMT on the microstructure, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of the resulting films. The films were produced by blending 30% of PBAT with glycerol (17.5%), starch (49.0-52.5%), and four different types of montmorillonite (Cloisite® Na+, 10A, 15A, and 30B) at two different concentrations (1.75% and 3.5%). All the films prepared in this study showed an increase in the basal spacing of MMT layers. In particular, the films with 10A and 30B showed the highest increase in intercalation basal spacing, suggesting the formation of intercalated composites. The addition of nanoclays decreased the elongation of films. The addition of Cloisite® 10A resulted in films with the lowest WVP values and the highest stability to water adsorption under different RH conditions.

A característica hidrofílica dos biomateriais a base de amido resulta em alta instabilidade diante de diferentes condições ambientais. O amido de aveia, por possuir um conteúdo maior de lipídios em relação a outros amidos, torna-se uma fonte interessante, uma vez que a hidrofobicidade aumentada pode atuar reduzindo sua capacidade de sorção de umidade. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar o comportamento de filmes e laminados de amido de aveia, produzidos por casting e extrusão, respectivamente, plastificados com glicerol, sorbitol e ureia e armazenados em diferentes condições de umidade relativa. Mesmo com a presença do lipídio nativo, os materiais ainda mostraram instabilidade diante do aumento da umidade relativa de armazenagem, sendo observado um decréscimo na força e um aumento na deformação nos testes de perfuração. Em geral os biomateriais plastificados com glicerol apresentaram maior capacidade de sorção de água. O sorbitol foi o plastificante mais efetivo, pois produziu materiais com propriedades mecânicas similares aos outros plastificantes mesmo sendo usado em menor concentração molar. O processo de extrusão resultou em materiais finais com estruturas mais abertas e fragmentadas.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thickness (between 80 and 120 µm) on apparent opacity, water vapor permeability and mechanical properties (tensile and puncture) of oat starch films plasticized with glycerol, sorbitol, glycerol:sorbitol mixture, urea and sucrose. Films were stored under 11, 57, 76 and 90% relative humidity (RH) to study the mechanical properties. It was observed that the higher the thickness, the higher was the opacity values. Films without the plasticizer were more opaque in comparison with the plasticized ones. Glycerol:sorbitol films presented increased elongation with increasing thickness at all RH. Puncture force showed a strong dependence on the film thickness, except for the films plasticized with sucrose. In general, thickness did not affect the water permeability.

The objectives of this work were to produce biodegradable composites using starch and different agro-industrial wastes (coconut fiber, soy bran and sugarcane bagasse) using a baking process, and to study the effects of these components on the resultant composite properties. The addition of different residues yielded trays with different properties. Samples manufactured with soy bran showed the highest density and water uptake at relative humidities ≥ 60%. The addition of sugarcane bagasse resulted in less dense and resistant samples whereas coconut fiber composites showed the highest breaking stress. The samples fabricated in this study represent an alternative packaging option for foods with low water content.

Development of an effective vaccine against human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a need of utmost medical importance. Generally, it is believed that a live attenuated vaccine would best provide protective immunity against this tenacious pathogen. Here, we propose a strategy for an HCMV vaccine that aims at the simultaneous activation of innate and adaptive immune responses. An HCMV strain expressing the host ligand ULBP2 for the NKG2D receptor was found to be susceptible to control by natural killer (NK) cells, and preserved the ability to stimulate HCMV-specific T cells. Infection with the ULBP2-expressing HCMV strain caused diminished cell surface levels of MHC class I molecules. While expression of the NKG2D ligand increased the cytolytic activity of NK cells, NKG2D engagement in CD8+ T cells provided co-stimulation and compensated for lower MHC class I expression. Altogether, our data indicate that triggering of both arms of the immune system is a promising approach applicable to the generation of a live attenuated HCMV vaccine.

The objective of this work was to manufacture biodegradable films based on cassava starch, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT), using glycerol as a plasticizer. These films were characterized according to their microstructure, optical, mechanical, and barrier properties. The combination of starch-PVA-MMT resulted in films with a more homogeneous surface than starch films. The introduction of PVA into the starch matrix led to the formation of films with lower water vapor permeability (WVP), higher tensile strength and greater elongation. MMT was exfoliated in the films, resulting in greater stability for different relative humidities, lower WVP, higher resistance and lower flexibility.

The aim of this work was to manufacture the biodegradable nanocomposite films by extrusion from different combinations of cassava starch, xanthan gum and nanoclays (sodium montmorillonite - MMT- Na) and to characterize them according to their microstructure, optical, mechanical and barrier properties. Films were manufactured from nine starch/xanthan/nanoclay combinations, containing glycerol as plasticizer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the starch-xanthan extruded films showed reticulated surface and smooth interior, indicating that the gum was mostly concentrated on the surface of the films, while starch/xanthan/nanoclays films showed a more homogeneous surface, suggesting that the introduction of nanoclays provided a better biopolymeric interaction. In general, nanoclays addition (2.5 - 5.0, w%) generated more transparent and resistant films, with lower water vapor permeabilities and lower water sorption capacities and xanthan gum addition improved the elongation ofa starch films.

Biodegradable foams made from cassava starch, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sugarcane bagasse fibers and chitosan were obtained by extrusion. The composites were prepared with formulations determined by a constrained ternary mixtures experimental design, using as variables: (X1) starch / PVA (100 - 70%), (X2) chitosan (0 - 2%) and (X3) fibers from sugar cane (0 - 28%). The effects of varying proportions of these three components on foam properties were studied, as well the relationship between their properties and foam microstructure. The addition of starch/PVA in high proportions increased the expansion index and mechanical resistance of studied foams. Fibers addition improved the expansion and mechanical properties of the foams. There was a trend of red and yellow colors when the composites were produced with the highest proportions of fibers and chitosan, respectively. All the formulations were resistant to moisture content increase until 75% relative humidity of storage.

Citric acid was used as a compatibilizer in the production of starch and PBAT films plasticized with glycerol and processed by blow extrusion. Films produced were characterized by WVP, mechanical properties, FT-IR-ATR and SEM. WPV ranged from 3.71 to 12.73×10-11 g m-1 s-1 Pa-1, while tensile strength and elongation at break ranged from 1.81 to 7.15 MPa and from 8.61 to 23.63%, respectively. Increasing the citric acid concentration improved WVP and slightly decreased film resistance and elongation. The films micrographs revealed a more homogeneous material with the addition of citric acid. However, the infrared spectra revealed little about cross-linking esterification reaction

A preocupação com o volume de lixo tem gerado interesse no desenvolvimento de embalagens biodegradáveis capazes de substituir, ao menos em parte, os plásticos convencionais sintéticos, como é o caso das embalagens de poliestireno expandido (Isopor). Ojvetivou-se,neste trabalho caracterizar, quanto ao índice de expansão (IE), densidade, índice de absorção em água (IAA), índice de solubilidade em água (ISA) e cor (coordenadas L*, a* e b*), compósitos biodegradáveis expandidos produzidos via extrusão, a partir da mistura de amido de mandioca, glicerol (plastificante) e dois tipos de fibras vegetais. Os compósitos foram preparados em extrusora mono-rosca, com três diferentes teores de fibras de aveia ou de cana-de-açúcar (0, 5 e 10 g/100 g amido), dois teores de umidade (18 e 26%) e teor fixo de glicerol (20g/100 g sólidos). A adição das fibras não afetou significativamente o IE, a densidade e o IAA, porém diminuiu o ISA dos materiais, o que é uma vantagem, favorecendo a utilização das fibras no reforço dos compósitos. A adição de fibras levou ao escurecimento das amostras, com decréscimo da luminosidade (L*) e, ainda, ao aumento nos valores dos parâmetros de cor a* e b*. Este estudo é passo fundamental para produção em escala industrial dos compósitos, que necessitam de condições de processo que forneçam resultados reprodutíveis de expansão e capacidade de absorção e solubilidade em água, propriedades de grande importância nesses produtos.The concern with the volume of waste has generated interest in the development of biodegradable packaging able to replace, at least in part, the conventional synthetic plastics, such as packs of expanded polystyrene (Isopor). This study aimed to characterize the expansion index, density, the water absorption index (WAI), water solubility index (WSI) and color (coordinates L*, a* and b*) of expanded biodegradable composites produced by extrusion, from the mixture cassava starch, glycerol (plasticizer) and two different types of vegetable fibres. The composites were prepared in a single screw extruder, with three different levels of oat or sugar cane fibres (0, 5 and 10 g /100 g starch), two levels of humidity (18 and 26%) and a fixed level of glycerol (20 g/100 g solds). The addition of fibres did not affect significantly the expansion index, density and WAI of materials, and reduced WSI of products, which is an advantage and promotes the use of these fibres in the reinforcement of composites. The addition of fibers led to the darkening of the samples, with decrease in lightness (L*) and increase in the values of the color parameters a* and b*. This study is a key step for a future industrial scale production of these composites, which requires process conditions that provide reproducible results of expansion and absorption capacity and solubility in water, properties of great importance in these products.

There is an increasing interest in the utilization of renewable resources for the production of food packaging. Among the biopolymers, starches from several sources have been considered as one of the most promising material for this purpose, and the reasons for this are that starches are biodegradable, are inexpensive and available in the worldwide. This work presents a bibliography review about biodegradable starch films characterization and potential of utilization. Discusses the starch films mechanical and barrier properties, the cristallinity and the effects of the use of plasticizers over these properties. The discussed informations indicate that exist great possibilities for these materials in food packaging, which depend on the production of more stable materials and the development of production technology in industrial scale.O interesse no emprego de matérias-primas provenientes de recursos renováveis para a produção de embalagens de alimentos vem crescendo. Dentre os biopolímeros mais promissores para este fim estão os amidos de diversas fontes botânicas, que são biodegradáveis, têm custo baixo e estão disponíveis em todo o mundo. Diante disto, este trabalho apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a caracterização e o potencial de utilização de filmes biodegradáveis a base de amido. Discute as propriedades mecânicas, de barreira e a cristalinidade dos filmes de amido e o efeito do uso de plastificantes sobre estas propriedades. As informações disponibilizadas mostram que existem grandes possibilidades de utilização destes materiais como embalagens de alimentos que, no entanto, dependem da produção de materiais mais estáveis às condições de armazenamento e do desenvolvimento de tecnologia de produção em escala industrial.

The effect of monoglyceride on microstructural, barrier and mechanical properties of casted yam starch films were investigated in different relative humidities (RH) and compared with glycerol-starch films. A single screw extruder was used to produce the starch - monoglyceride complex before film production and this process was effective to inhibit the phase separation in films. The addition of the hydrophobic compound reduced hydrophobicity, transparency and water vapor permeability of films. This later value for starch-glycerol film (1.7 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) was higher than starch (1.2 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) and monoglyceride-starch films (1.0 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1). Films containing glycerol had higher relative crystallinity (B and V H) with a slight increase at higher RH values, while for monoglyceride films, the crystallinity was constant. Monoglyceride-starch films presented poor mechanical properties when compared to glycerol- starch ones but they presented a stable behavior under different relative humidities.Estudou-se o efeito da adição de monoglicerídeo nas propriedades microestruturais, mecânicas e de barreira de filmes de amido de inhame, em diferentes umidades relativas (UR), comparando-as com as de filmes de amido- glicerol. Uma extrusora mono-rosca foi usado para produzir o complexo amido-monoglicerídeo, antes de produzir o filme, e o processo foi efetivo para inibir a separação de fases que geralmente ocorre nesse tipo de filmes. A adição de monoglicerídeo, que é um composto hidrofóbico, reduziu a hidrofilicidade, a transparência e a permeabilidade ao vapor de água dos filmes. O valor desta, para os filmes de amido-glicerol (1,7 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) foi maior que para os de amido (1,2 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) e para os de amido-monoglicerídeo (1,0 x 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1). Os filmes com glicerol tiveram maior cristalinidade relativa (B e V H), com um ligeiro aumento em altas UR, enquanto que nos filmes com monoglicerídeo a cristalinidade foi constante. Os filmes de amido-monoglicerídeo apresentaram piores propriedades mecânicas que os filmes de amido-glicerol, mas foram mais estáveis sob diferentes umidades relativas.

In this work were studied the plasticizing – antiplasticizing effects of glycerol and sorbitol on moisture sorption and mechanical properties of cassava starch films. Films were produced by casting with cassava starch (3g starch/100 g filmogenic solution) and different concentrations of glycerol or sorbitol (0, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 40 g/100 g starch). Glycerol and sorbitol acted as antiplasticizers when used at a low concentration (?15 g/100 g starch) and low values of water activity (?0,58). The antiplasticizing effect could be demonstrated by the decrease in hydrophilicity and in flexibility of the films at these conditions. At higher concentrations and higher water activity values, the employed plasticizers exerted its plasticizing effect.Neste trabalho foram estudados os efeitos plastificante e antiplastificante do glicerol e do sorbitol sobre as propriedades de sorção de água e mecânicas de filmes de amido de mandioca. Os filmes foram produzidos por casting empregando-se amido de mandioca (3 g/ 100 g de solução filmogênica) e diferentes concentrações de glicerol ou sorbitol (0, 5, 10, 15, 30 e 40 g/100 g de amido). Glicerol e sorbitol apresentaram efeito antiplastificante quando empregados em baixas concentrações (? 15 g/100 g amido) e sob baixos valores de atividade de água (? 0,58). O efeito antiplastificante pode ser demonstrado pelo decréscimo da hidrofilicidade e da flexibilidade dos filmes nestas condições. Em concentrações mais elevadas de plastificante e sob maiores atividades de água, os plastificantes empregados exerceram o efeito esperado de plastificação.

There is an increasing interest in the utilization of renewable resources for the production of food packaging. Among the biopolymers, starches from several sources have been considered as one of the most promising material for this purpose; and the reasons for this are that starches are biodegradable, inexpensive and available in all world. This work had the objective of evaluate the effect of yam starch biodegradable packaging on storage (30 days / 4oC) of comercial-processed cheese and to compare with conventional packaging. The results showed that conventional packaging presented the better behavior on weight and water activity retention of samples during all storage time than starch packaging. Considering microbiological counts, only control samples (unpackaged) showed contamination. Titratable acidity and pH of packaged samples did not differ for starch or conventional package (Tukey test, p ? 0.05) during all storage time. Considering the presented results, yam starch could be used as an alternative to package processed cheese, but more studies have to be done to improve starch films as a water vapor barrier.Há um interesse crescente no emprego de matérias-primas provenientes de recursos renováveis para a produção de embalagens para alimentos. Dentre os biopolímeros mais promissores para este fim estão os amidos de diversas fontes botânicas, que são biodegradáveis, têm custo baixo e estão disponíveis em todo o mundo. Assim sendo, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de embalagens biodegradáveis de amido de inhame no armazenamento (30 dias / 4oc) de queijo processado obtido de fonte comercial, e comparar o seu desempenho com o de embalagens convencionais. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a embalagem convencional foi mais eficaz na retenção do peso e atividade de água das amostras do que a embalagem de amido. Quanto à contagem microbiana, apenas as amostras não embaladas apresentaram contaminação. A acidez titulável e o ph não diferiram nas amostras embaladas durante todo o tempo de armazenamento (teste de tukey, p £ 0,05). Considerando os resultados apresentados, verificou-se que a utilização de embalagens de amido de inhame pode ser uma alternativa para este tipo de produto, desde que, mais estudos sejam realizados no sentido de aprimorar a embalagem de amido como barreira às trocas de vapor de água.

Yam tubers (Dioscorea alata) are a non-traditional starch source. Yam starch had been studied as a promising polymer for biofilm production because it contains about 30% of amylose, and amylose is responsible for the film-forming capacity of starches. Starches obtained from yam tubers were extracted employing two different methods and its chemical and functional characteristics and film forming capacity were analysed. The first method, described by Alves, Grossmann e Silva (1999) was executed in 6 days, generating from yam tubers 7% of yam starch with purity grade up to 95%. The second method, described by Cereda et al. (2003), yielded 13% of yam starch with purity grade around 84% and was developed in three days. Brabender amylograms showed that starch pastes maintained stability under heat treatment with lower viscosity values to the starch obtained by second extraction method. In film forming capacity, both starches presented similar results, forming films with high tensile strength, but the starch obtained by second extraction method formed films with high opacity values. To industry use, the second method seemed to be more appropriate, because had a higher yield and required fewer time.Tubérculos de inhame (Dioscorea alata) constituem-se em uma fonte não convencional de amido. O amido de inhame tem sido estudado como um polímero promissor na confecção de biofilmes por conter cerca de 30% de amilose, polímero responsável pela capacidade de formação de filmes nos amidos. Os amidos obtidos dos tubérculos de inhame foram extraídos por dois diferentes métodos e as características químicas e funcionais das amostras foram analisadas. O primeiro método, descrito por Alves, Grossmann e Silva (1999) foi executado em seis dias, gerando 7% de amido com grau de pureza acima de 95%. O segundo método, descrito por Cereda et al. (2003), rendeu 13% de amido com grau de pureza de 84% e foi realizado em três dias. Os amilogramas Brabender mostraram que as pastas de amido apresentaram estabilidade sob tratamento térmico, com menores valores de viscosidade para os amidos obtidos pelo segundo método de extração. A capacidade de formação de filmes das amostras extraídas pelos dois métodos foi similar, formando-se filmes com alta resistência mecânica, porém o amido obtido através do segundo método formou filmes mais opacos. Para adaptação à indústria, o segundo método de extração pareceu ser o mais adequado, porque o rendimento foi maior e requereu menos tempo.

Abstract The modification of lignocellulosic fibers can enhance their interaction with other materials and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) is a reagent widely used to promote such modification. This work aimed to modify oat hulls fibers by reactive extrusion using AHP (7 g 100 g-1 of hulls). The modified oat hulls displayed performances comparable to those observed by other researchers using conventional AHP method (without extrusion). The AHP treated oat hulls showed increased luminosity compared to the extruded ones. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed differences between the modified and unmodified structures. The removal of surface compounds resulted in a more open morphology, with greater surface area and greater porosity. Reactive extrusion can be an alternative method for fiber modification with several advantages, such as short processing time and no wastewater generation.

The largest consumption of plastics in the world is referred to the synthetic polymers, which are not biodegradable and have a non-renewable source, generating a large environmental impact, especially in urban centers. As a result, in the last two decades several polymers obtained from renewable sources (biopolymers) have been studied as potential raw materials for the production of new biodegradable materials with different applications. The objectives of this study were to produce biodegradable films based on cassava starch, pullulan and bacterial cellulose, and also to characterize these films according to their microstructure, barrier, thermal and mechanical properties. The addition of bacterial cellulose and pullulan to the starch films resulted in films with more homogeneous surfaces, and also decreased solubility and water vapor permeability, and increased elongation and thermal stability.
