In this paper, we present a quantitative holographic relation between a microscopic measure of randomness and the geometric length of the wormhole in the black hole interior. To this end, we perturb an AdS black hole with Brownian semiclassical sources, implementing the continuous version of a random quantum circuit for the black hole. We use the random circuit to prepare ensembles of states of the black hole whose semiclassical duals contain Einstein-Rosen (ER) caterpillars: long cylindrical wormholes with large numbers of matter inhomogeneities, of linearly growing length with the circuit time. In this setup, we show semiclassically that the ensemble of ER caterpillars of average length $k\ell_{\Delta}$ and matter correlation scale $\ell_{\Delta}$ forms an approximate quantum state $k$-design of the black hole. At exponentially long circuit times, the ensemble of ER caterpillars becomes polynomial-copy indistinguishable from a collection of random states of the black hole. Random magnetic field configurations are ubiquitous in nature. Such fields lead to a variety of dynamical phenomena, including localization and glassy physics in some condensed matter systems and novel transport processes in astrophysical systems. Here we consider the physics of a charged quantum particle moving in a ``magnetic maze'': a high-dimensional space filled with a randomly chosen vector potential and a corresponding magnetic field. We derive a path integral description of the model by introducing appropriate collective variables and integrating out the random vector potential, and we solve for the dynamics in the limit of large dimensionality. We derive and analyze the equations of motion for Euclidean and real-time dynamics, and we calculate out-of-time-order correlators. We show that a special choice of vector potential correlations gives rise, in the low temperature limit, to a novel scale-invariant quantum theory with a tunable dynamical exponent. Moreover, we show that the theory is chaotic with a tunable chaos exponent which approaches the chaos bound at low temperature and strong coupling.

In quantum information science, Clifford operators and stabilizer codes play a central role for systems of qubits (or qudits). In this paper, we study the analogous objects for systems of Majorana fermions. A crucial role is played by fermion parity symmetry, which is an unbreakable symmetry present in any system in which the fundamental degrees of freedom are fermionic. We prove that the subgroup of parity-preserving fermionic Cliffords can be represented by the orthogonal group over the binary field $\mathbb{F}_2$, and we show how it can be generated by braiding operators and used to construct any (even-parity) Majorana stabilizer code. We also analyze the frame potential for this so-called p-Clifford group, proving that it is equivalent to the frame potential of the ordinary Clifford group acting on a fixed-parity sector of the Hilbert space., Comment: 16 pages, small errors fixed, comments welcome

We study the dynamical generation of randomness in Brownian systems as a function of the degree of locality of the Hamiltonian. We first express the trace distance to a unitary design for these systems in terms of an effective equilibrium thermal partition function, and provide a set of conditions that guarantee a linear time to design. We relate the trace distance to design to spectral properties of the time-evolution operator. We apply these considerations to the Brownian $p$-SYK model as a function of the degree of locality $p$. We show that the time to design is linear, with a slope proportional to $1/p$. We corroborate that when $p$ is of order the system size this reproduces the behavior of a completely non-local Brownian model of random matrices. For the random matrix model, we reinterpret these results from the point of view of classical Brownian motion in the unitary manifold. Therefore, we find that the generation of randomness typically persists for exponentially long times in the system size, even for systems governed by highly non-local time-dependent Hamiltonians. We conjecture this to be a general property: there is no efficient way to generate approximate Haar random unitaries dynamically, unless a large degree of fine-tuning is present in the ensemble of time-dependent Hamiltonians. We contrast the slow generation of randomness to the growth of quantum complexity of the time-evolution operator. Using known bounds on circuit complexity for unitary designs, we obtain a lower bound determining that complexity grows at least linearly in time for Brownian systems. We argue that these bounds on circuit complexity are far from tight and that complexity grows at a much faster rate, at least for non-local systems., Comment: 40 pages + appendices. v3: added references

Monitored random circuits, consisting of alternating layers of entangling two-qubit gates and projective single-qubit measurements applied to some fraction $p$ of the qubits, have been a topic of recent interest. In particular, the resulting steady state exhibits a phase transition from highly correlated states with "volume-law" entanglement at $pp_{c}$. It is hard to access this transition experimentally, as it cannot be seen at the ensemble level. Naively, to observe it one must repeat the experiment until the set of measurement results repeats itself, with likelihood that is exponentially small in the number of measurements. To overcome this issue, we present a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm which creates a matrix product state (MPS) based "unitary mirror" of the projected circuit. Polynomial-sized tensor networks can represent quantum states with area-law entanglement, and so the unitary mirror can well-approximate the experimental state above $p_{c}$ but fails exponentially below it. The breaking of this mirror can thus pinpoint the critical point. We outline the algorithm and how such results would be obtained. We present a bound on the maximum entanglement entropy of any given state that is well-represented by an MPS, and from the bound suggest how the volume-law phase can be bounded. We consider whether the entanglement could similarly be bounded from below where the MPS fails. We study the equilibrium thermodynamics of quantum hard spheres in the infinite-dimensional limit, determining the boundary between liquid and glass phases in the temperature-density plane by means of the Franz-Parisi potential. We find that as the temperature decreases from high values, the effective radius of the spheres is enhanced by a multiple of the thermal de Broglie wavelength, thus increasing the effective filling fraction and decreasing the critical density for the glass phase. Numerical calculations show that the critical density continues to decrease monotonically as the temperature decreases further, suggesting that the system will form a glass at sufficiently low temperatures for any density.

We analyze a model of qubits which we argue has an emergent quantum gravitational description similar to the fermionic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. The model we consider is known as the quantum $q$-spin model because it features $q$-local interactions between qubits. It was previously studied as a model of a quantum spin glass, and while we find that the model is glassy for $q=2$, $q=3$, and likely $q=4$, we also find evidence for previously unexpected SYK-like behavior for the quenched free energy down to the lowest temperatures for $q \geq 5$. This SYK-like physics includes power-law correlation functions and an extensive low temperature entropy, so we refer to the model as Spin SYK. The model is generic in that it includes all possible $q$-body couplings, lacks most symmetries, and has no spatial structure, so our results can be construed as establishing a certain ubiquity of quantum holography in systems dominated by many-body interactions. Furthermore, we discuss a generalized family of models which includes Spin SYK and which provably exhibit SYK-like physics in the solvable limit of large local Hilbert space dimension. We also comment on implications of a bosonic system with SYK-like properties for the study of holography, Hamiltonian complexity, and related topics.

We employ matrix product state simulations to study energy transport within the non-integrable regime of the one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_3$ chiral clock model. To induce a non-equilibrium steady state throughout the system, we consider open system dynamics with boundary driving featuring jump operators with adjustable temperature and footprint in the system. Given a steady state, we diagnose the effective local temperature by minimizing the trace distance between the true local state and the local state of a uniform thermal ensemble. Via a scaling analysis, we extract the transport coefficients of the model at relatively high temperatures above both its gapless and gapped low-temperature phases. In the medium-to-high temperature regime we consider, diffusive transport is observed regardless of the low-temperature physics. We calculate the temperature dependence of the energy diffusion constant as a function of model parameters, including in the regime where the model is quantum critical at the low temperature. Notably, even within the gapless regime, an analysis based on power series expansion implies that intermediate-temperature transport can be accessed within a relatively confined setup. Although we are not yet able to reach temperatures where quantum critical scaling would be observed, our approach is able to access the transport properties of the model over a broad range of temperatures and parameters. We conclude by discussing the limitations of our method and potential extensions that could expand its scope, for example, to even lower temperatures., Comment: Published version, 10+3 pages, 4+2 figures

We discuss families of approximate quantum error correcting codes which arise as the nearly-degenerate ground states of certain quantum many-body Hamiltonians composed of non-commuting terms. For exact codes, the conditions for error correction can be formulated in terms of the vanishing of a two-sided mutual information in a low-temperature thermofield double state. We consider a notion of distance for approximate codes obtained by demanding that this mutual information instead be small, and we evaluate this mutual information for the SYK model and for a family of low-rank SYK models. After an extrapolation to nearly zero temperature, we find that both kinds of models produce fermionic codes with constant rate as the number, $N$, of fermions goes to infinity. For SYK, the distance scales as $N^{1/2}$, and for low-rank SYK, the distance can be arbitrarily close to linear scaling, e.g. $N^{.99}$, while maintaining a constant rate. We also consider an analog of the no low-energy trivial states property which we dub the no low-energy adiabatically accessible states property and show that these models do have low-energy states that can be prepared adiabatically in a time that does not scale with system size $N$. We construct entangled microstates of a pair of holographic CFTs whose dual semiclassical description includes big bang-big crunch AdS cosmologies in spaces without boundaries. The cosmology is supported by inhomogeneous heavy matter and it partially purifies the bulk entanglement of two disconnected auxiliary AdS spacetimes. We show that the island formula for the fine grained entropy of one of the CFTs follows from a standard gravitational replica trick calculation. In generic settings, the cosmology is contained in the entanglement wedge of one of the two CFTs. We then investigate properties of the cosmology-to-boundary encoding map, and in particular, its non-isometric character. Restricting our attention to a specific class of states on the cosmology, we provide an explicit, and state-dependent, boundary representation of operators acting on the cosmology. Finally, under genericity assumptions, we argue for a non-isometric to approximately-isometric transition of the cosmology-to-boundary map for ``simple'' states on the cosmology as a function of the bulk entanglement, with tensor network toy models of our setup as a guide., Comment: 62 pages, 22 figures + appendices. v2: minor corrections, updated references and Fig. 18. v3: minor corrections in Section 5, updated Fig. 22

The spectral form factor (SFF) is an important diagnostic of energy level repulsion in random matrix theory (RMT) and quantum chaos. The short-time behavior of the SFF as it approaches the RMT result acts as a diagnostic of the ergodicity of the system as it approaches the thermal state. In this work we observe that for systems without time-reversal symmetry, there is a second break from the RMT result at late time around the Heisenberg time. Long after thermalization has taken hold, and after the SFF has agreed with the RMT result to high precision for a time of order the Heisenberg time, the SFF of a large system will briefly deviate from the RMT behavior in a way exactly determined by its early time thermalization properties. The conceptual reason for this second deviation is the Riemann-Siegel lookalike formula, a resummed expression for the spectral determinant relating late time behavior to early time spectral statistics. We use the lookalike formula to derive a precise expression for the late time SFF for semi-classical quantum chaotic systems, and then confirm our results numerically for more general systems.

The recently introduced Quantum Lego framework provides a powerful method for generating complex quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) out of simple ones. We gamify this process and unlock a new avenue for code design and discovery using reinforcement learning (RL). One benefit of RL is that we can specify \textit{arbitrary} properties of the code to be optimized. We train on two such properties, maximizing the code distance, and minimizing the probability of logical error under biased Pauli noise. For the first, we show that the trained agent identifies ways to increase code distance beyond naive concatenation, saturating the linear programming bound for CSS codes on 13 qubits. With a learning objective to minimize the logical error probability under biased Pauli noise, we find the best known CSS code at this task for $\lesssim 20$ qubits. Compared to other (locally deformed) CSS codes, including Surface, XZZX, and 2D Color codes, our $[[17,1,3]]$ code construction actually has \textit{lower} adversarial distance, yet better protects the logical information, highlighting the importance of QECC desiderata. We study the thermalization properties of one-dimensional open quantum systems coupled to baths at their boundary. The baths are driven to their thermal states via Lindblad operators, while the system undergoes Hamiltonian dynamics. We specifically consider multi-site baths and investigate the extent to which the late-time steady state resembles a Gibbs state at some controllable temperature set by the baths. We study three models: a non-interacting fermion model accessible via free-fermion technology, and two interacting models, the XZ model and the chiral clock model, which are accessible via tensor network methods. We show that, by tuning towards the weak coupling and slow relaxation limits, one can engineer low temperatures in the bulk of the system provided the bath size is big enough. We use this capability to study energy transport in the XZ model at lower temperatures than previously reported. We extend the results of arXiv:2209.12903 by studying local projective measurements performed on subregions of two copies of a CFT${}_2$ in the thermofield double state and investigating their consequences on the bulk double-sided black hole holographic dual. We focus on CFTs defined on an infinite line and consider measurements of both finite and semi-infinite subregions. In the former case, the connectivity of the bulk spacetime is preserved after the measurement. In the latter case, the measurement of two semi-infinite intervals in one CFT or of one semi-infinite interval in each CFT can destroy the Einstein-Rosen bridge and disconnect the bulk dual spacetime. In particular, we find that a transition between a connected and disconnected phase occurs depending on the relative size of the measured and unmeasured subregions and on the specific Cardy state the measured subregions are projected on. We identify this phase transition as an entangled/disentangled phase transition of the dual CFT system by computing the post-measurement holographic entanglement entropy between the two CFTs. We also find that bulk information encoded in one CFT in the absence of measurement can sometimes be reconstructed from the other CFT when a measurement is performed, or can be erased by the measurement. Finally, we show that a purely CFT calculation of the Renyi entropy using the replica trick yields results compatible with those obtained in our bulk analysis., Comment: 55 pages, 22 figures

Motivated by the ground state structure of quantum models with all-to-all interactions such as mean-field quantum spin glass models and the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, we propose a tensor network architecture which can accomodate volume law entanglement and a large ground state degeneracy. We call this architecture the non-local renormalization ansatz (NoRA) because it can be viewed as a generalization of MERA, DMERA, and branching MERA networks with the constraints of spatial locality removed. We argue that the architecture is potentially expressive enough to capture the entanglement and complexity of the ground space of the SYK model, thus making it a suitable variational ansatz, but we leave a detailed study of SYK to future work. We further explore the architecture in the special case in which the tensors are random Clifford gates. Here the architecture can be viewed as the encoding map of a random stabilizer code. We introduce a family of codes inspired by the SYK model which can be chosen to have constant rate and linear distance at the cost of some high weight stabilizers. There is an ambiguity in how to apply the replica trick to spin glass models which have additional order parameters unrelated to spin glass order -- with respect to which quantities does one minimize vs maximize the action, and in what sequence? Here we show that the correct procedure is to first maximize with respect to "replica" order parameters, and then minimize with respect to "conventional" order parameters. With this result, we further elucidate the relationship between quenched free energies, annealed free energies, and replica order -- it is possible for the quenched and annealed free energies to differ even while all replica order parameters remain zero., Comment: Updated following referee comments and publication

Glasses have the interesting feature of being neither integrable nor fully chaotic. They thermalize quickly within a subspace but thermalize much more slowly across the full space due to high free energy barriers which partition the configuration space into sectors. Past works have examined the Rosenzweig-Porter (RP) model as a minimal quantum model which transitions from localized to chaotic behavior. In this work we generalize the RP model in such a way that it becomes a minimal model which transitions from glassy to chaotic behavior, which we term the "Block Rosenzweig-Porter" (BRP) model. We calculate the spectral form factors of both models at all timescales. Whereas the RP model exhibits a crossover from localized to ergodic behavior at the Thouless timescale, the new BRP model instead crosses over from glassy to fully chaotic behavior, as seen by a change in the slope of the ramp of the spectral form factor., Comment: 41 pages, 10 figures

Motivated by traversable wormhole constructions that require large amounts of negative energy, we explore constraints on the amount of negative energy that can be carried by a free Dirac field in a slab-shaped region between two parallel spatial planes. Specifically, we ask what is the minimum possible uniform energy density that can exist at some time, considering all possible states and all possibilities for the physics outside the slab. The vacuum state where we identify the two sides of the slab with antiperiodic boundary conditions gives one possible state with uniform negative energy, but we argue that states with more negative energy exist above 1+1 dimensions. Technically, we reduce the problem to studying a massive Dirac field on an interval in 1+1 dimensions and numerically search for states with uniform energy density in a lattice regulated model. We succeed in finding states with enhanced negative energy (relative to the antiperiodic vacuum) which also appear to have a sensible continuum limit. Our results for the mass-dependence of the minimum uniform energy density in 1+1 dimensions suggest that for a 3+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermion, it is possible to have states with arbitrarily large uniform negative energy density in an arbitrarily wide slab., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, LaTeX

A large class of $\Lambda < 0$ cosmologies have big-bang / big crunch spacetimes with time-symmetric backgrounds and asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuations suggesting a possible holographic realization. We argue that these models generically have time-dependent scalar fields, and these can lead to realistic cosmologies at the level of the homogeneous background geometry, with an accelerating phase prior to the turnaround and crunch. We first demonstrate via explicit effective field theory examples that models with an asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuation can also exhibit a period of accelerated expansion without fine tuning. We then show that certain significantly more tuned examples can give predictions arbitrarily close to a $\Lambda$CDM model. Finally, we demonstrate via an explicit construction that the potentials of interest can arise from a superpotential, thus suggesting that these solutions may be compatible with an underlying supersymmetric theory., Comment: 26 pages + appendices. v2: corrected affiliations, added references

We study the spectral form factor (SFF) for hydrodynamic systems with a sound pole, a large class including any fluid with momentum conservation and energy conservation, or any extended system with spontaneously broken continuous symmetry. We study such systems in a finite volume cavity and find that the logarithm of the hydrodynamic enhancement to the SFF is closely related to the spectral form factor of a quantum particle moving in the selfsame cavity. Depending upon the dimensionality and nature of the effective single-particle physics, these systems exhibit a range of behaviors including an intricate resonance phenomenon, emergent integrability in the SFF, and anomalously large fluctuations of the SFF., Comment: 31 pages

In this paper, we explore the possibility of building a quantum memory that is robust to thermal noise using large $N$ matrix quantum mechanics models. First, we investigate the gauged $SU(N)$ matrix harmonic oscillator and different ways to encode quantum information in it. By calculating the mutual information between the system and a reference which purifies the encoded information, we identify a transition temperature, $T_c$, below which the encoded quantum information is protected from thermal noise for a memory time scaling as $N^2$. Conversely, for temperatures higher than $T_c$, the information is quickly destroyed by thermal noise. Second, we relax the requirement of gauge invariance and study a matrix harmonic oscillator model with only global symmetry. Finally, we further relax even the symmetry requirement and propose a model that consists of a large number $N^2$ of qubits, with interactions derived from an approximate $SU(N)$ symmetry. In both ungauged models, we find that the effects of gauging can be mimicked using an energy penalty to give a similar result for the memory time. According to holography, entanglement is the building block of spacetime; therefore, drastic changes of entanglement will lead to interesting transitions in the dual spacetime. In this paper, we study the effect of projective measurements on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model's thermofield double state, dual to an eternal black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We calculate the (Renyi-2) mutual information between the two copies of the SYK model upon projective measurement of a subset of fermions in one copy. We propose a dual JT gravity model that can account for the change of entanglement due to measurement, and observe an entanglement wedge phase transition in the von Neumann entropy. The entanglement wedge for the unmeasured side changes from the region outside the horizon to include the entire time reversal invariant slice of the two-sided geometry as the number of measured Majorana fermions increases. Therefore, after the transition, the bulk information stored in the measured subsystem is not entirely lost upon projection in one copy of the SYK model, but rather teleported to the other copy. We further propose a decoding protocol to elucidate the teleportation interpretation, and connect our analysis to the physics of traversable wormholes., Comment: 35 pages + appendices, 21 figures

Many simulation tasks require that one first prepare a system's Gibbs state. We present a family of quantum circuits for variational preparation of thermal Gibbs states on a quantum computer; we call them the thermal multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (TMERA). TMERA circuits transform input qubits to wavepacket modes localized to varying length scales and approximate a systems Gibbs state as a mixed state of these modes. The TMERA is a based on the deep multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (DMERA); a TMERA modifies a ground-state DMERA circuit by preparing each input qubit as a mixed state. The excitation probabilities for input qubits serve as variational parameters used to target particular temperature Gibbs states. Since a TMERA is a special case of the product spectrum ansatz for thermal states, it is simple to prepare, analyze, and optimize. We benchmark the TMERA on the transverse field Ising model in one dimension and find that for $D=6$ it produces global fidelities $\mathcal F > 0.4$ for 512-site systems across all temperatures., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We use non-equilibrium steady states to study the effect of dissipation-assisted operator evolution (DAOE) on the scaling behavior of transport in one-dimensional spin chains. We consider three models in the XXZ family: the XXZ model with staggered anisotropy, which is chaotic; XXZ model with no external field and tunable interaction, which is Bethe ansatz integrable and (in the zero interaction limit) free fermion integrable; and the disordered XY model, which is free-fermion integrable and Anderson localized. We find evidence that DAOE's effect on transport is controlled by its effect on the system's conserved quantities. To the extent that DAOE preserves those symmetries, it preserves the scaling of the system's transport properties; to the extent it breaks those conserved quantities, it pushes the system towards diffusive scaling of transport., Comment: Published version, 14+5 pages, 11+5 figures

We summarize current and future applications of quantum information science to theoretical high energy physics. Three main themes are identified and discussed; quantum simulation, quantum sensors and formal aspects of the connection between quantum information and gravity. Within these themes, there are important research questions and opportunities to address them in the years and decades ahead. Efforts in developing a diverse quantum workforce are also discussed. Holography has taught us that spacetime is emergent and its properties depend on the entanglement structure of the dual theory. In this paper, we describe how changes in the entanglement due to a local projective measurement (LPM) on a subregion $A$ of the boundary theory modify the bulk dual spacetime. We find that LPMs destroy portions of the bulk geometry, yielding post-measurement bulk spacetimes dual to the complementary unmeasured region $A^c$ that are cut off by end-of-the-world branes. Using a bulk calculation in $AdS_3$ and tensor network models of holography, we show that the portions of the bulk geometry that are preserved after the measurement depend on the size of $A$ and the state we project onto. The post-measurement bulk dual to $A^c$ includes regions that were originally part of the entanglement wedge of $A$ prior to measurement. This suggests that LPMs performed on a boundary subregion $A$ teleport part of the bulk information originally encoded in $A$ into the complementary region $A^c$. In semiclassical holography an arbitrary amount of bulk information can be teleported in this way, while in tensor network models the teleported information is upper-bounded by the amount of entanglement shared between $A$ and $A^c$ due to finite-$N$ effects. When $A$ is the union of two disjoint subregions, the measurement triggers an entangled/disentangled phase transition between the remaining two unmeasured subregions, corresponding to a connected/disconnected phase transition in the bulk description. Our results shed new light on the effects of measurement on the entanglement structure of holographic theories and give insight on how bulk information can be manipulated from the boundary theory. They could also be extended to more general quantum systems and tested experimentally, and represent a first step towards a holographic description of measurement-induced phase transitions., Comment: 60 pages + appendices, 27 figures

However, the fractional FKPP description is potentially subject to strong quantum fluctuation effects, so it is not clear a priori if it provides a suitable effective description for generic chaotic systems with power-law interactions. Here we study this problem using a model of coupled quantum dots with interactions decaying as $\frac{1}{r^{\alpha}}$, where each dot hosts $N$ degrees of freedom. The large $N$ limit corresponds to the mean-field description, while quantum fluctuations contributing to the OTOC can be modeled by $\frac{1}{N}$ corrections consisting of a cutoff function and noise. Within this framework, we show that the parameters of the effective theory can be chosen to reproduce the butterfly light cone scalings that we previously found for $N=1$ and generic finite $N$. In order to reproduce these scalings, the fractional index $\mu$ in the FKPP equation needs to be shifted from the na\"ive value of $\mu = 2\alpha - 1$ to a renormalized value $\mu = 2\alpha - 2$. A large class of flat big bang - big crunch cosmologies with negative cosmological constant are related by analytic continuation to asymptotically AdS traversable wormholes with planar cross section. In recent works (arXiv: 2102.05057, 2203.11220) it was suggested that such wormhole geometries may be dual to a pair of 3D holographic CFTs coupled via auxiliary degrees of freedom to give a theory that confines in the infrared. In this paper, we explore signatures of the presence of such a wormhole in the state of the coupled pair of 3D theories. We explain how the wormhole geometry is reflected in the spectrum of the confining theory and the behavior of two-point functions and entanglement entropies. We provide explicit algorithms to reconstruct the wormhole scale factor (which uniquely determines its geometry) from entanglement entropies, heavy operator two-point functions, or light operator two-point functions (which contain the spectrum information). In the last case, the physics of the bulk scalar field dual to the light operator is closely related to the quantum mechanics of a one-dimensional particle in a potential derived from the scale factor, and the problem of reconstructing the scale factor from the two-point function is directly related to the problem of reconstructing this Schr\"odinger potential from its spectrum., Comment: 37 Pages + appendices, 4 Figures

We consider cosmological models in which the cosmology is related via analytic continuation to a Euclidean asymptotically AdS planar wormhole geometry defined holographically via a pair of three-dimensional Euclidean CFTs. We argue that these models can generically give rise to an accelerating phase for the cosmology due to the potential energy of scalar fields associated with relevant scalar operators in the CFT. We calculate the frame potential for Brownian clusters of $N$ spins or fermions with time-dependent all-to-all interactions. In both cases the problem can be mapped to an effective statistical mechanics problem which we study using a path integral approach. We argue that the $k$th frame potential comes within $\epsilon$ of the Haar value after a time of order $t \sim k N + k \log k + \log \epsilon^{-1}$. Using a bound on the diamond norm, this implies that such circuits are capable of coming very close to a unitary $k$-design after a time of order $t \sim k N$. We also consider the same question for systems with a time-independent Hamiltonian and argue that a small amount of time-dependent randomness is sufficient to generate a $k$-design in linear time provided the underlying Hamiltonian is quantum chaotic. We study tensor network states defined on an underlying graph which is sparsely connected. Generic sparse graphs are expander graphs with a high probability, and one can represent volume law entangled states efficiently with only polynomial resources. We find that message-passing inference algorithms such as belief propagation can lead to efficient computation of local expectation values for a class of tensor network states defined on sparse graphs. As applications, we study local properties of square root states, graph states, and also employ this method to variationally prepare ground states of gapped Hamiltonians defined on generic graphs. The Spectral Form Factor (SFF) measures the fluctuations in the density of states of a Hamiltonian. We consider a generalization of the SFF called the Loschmidt Spectral Form Factor, $\textrm{tr}[e^{iH_1T}]\textrm{tr} [e^{-iH_2T}]$, for $H_1-H_2$ small. If the ensemble average of the SFF is the variance of the density fluctuations for a single Hamiltonian drawn from the ensemble, the averaged Loschmidt SFF is the covariance for two Hamiltonians drawn from a correlated ensemble. This object is a time-domain version of the parametric correlations studied in the quantum chaos and random matrix literatures. We show analytically that the averaged Loschmidt SFF is proportional to $e^{i\lambda T}T$ for a complex rate $\lambda$ with a positive imaginary part, showing in a quantitative way that the long-time details of the spectrum are exponentially more sensitive to perturbations than the short-time properties. The holographic principle and its realization in the AdS/CFT correspondence led to unexpected connections between general relativity and quantum information. This set the stage for studying aspects of quantum gravity models, which are otherwise difficult to access, in table-top quantum-computational experiments. Recent works have designed a special teleportation protocol that realizes a surprising communication phenomenon most naturally explained by the physics of a traversable wormhole. In this work, we have carried out quantum experiments based on this protocol on state-of-the-art quantum computers. The target quantum processing units (QPUs) included the Quantinuum's trapped-ion System Model H1-1 and five IBM superconducting QPUs of various architectures, with public and premium user access. We report the observed teleportation signals from these QPUs with the best one reaching 80% of theoretical predictions. We outline the experimental challenges we have faced in the course of implementation, as well as the new theoretical insights into quantum dynamics the work has led to. We also developed QGLab -- an open-source end-to-end software solution that facilitates conducting the wormhole-inspired teleportation experiments on state-of-the-art and emergent generations of QPUs supported by the Qiskit and tket SDKs. We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a one-dimensional complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chain by directly solving for the steady state Green's functions in terms of small perturbations around their equilibrium values. The model exhibits strange metal behavior without quasiparticles and features diffusive propagation of both energy and charge. We explore the thermoelectric transport properties of this system by imposing uniform temperature and chemical potential gradients. We then expand the conserved charges and their associated currents to leading order in these gradients, which we can compute numerically and analytically for different parameter regimes. This allows us to extract the full temperature and chemical potential dependence of the transport coefficients. In particular, we uncover that the diffusivity matrix takes on a simple form in various limits and leads to simplified Einstein relations. At low temperatures, we also recover a previously known result for the Wiedemann-Franz ratio. Furthermore, we establish a relationship between diffusion and quantum chaos by showing that the diffusivity eigenvalues are upper bounded by the chaos propagation rate at all temperatures. Our work showcases an important example of an analytically tractable calculation of transport properties in a strongly interacting quantum system and reveals a more general purpose method for addressing strongly coupled transport., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures

It is widely expected that systems which fully thermalize are chaotic in the sense of exhibiting random-matrix statistics of their energy level spacings, whereas integrable systems exhibit Poissonian statistics. In this paper, we investigate a third class: spin glasses. These systems are partially chaotic but do not achieve full thermalization due to large free energy barriers. We examine the level spacing statistics of a canonical infinite-range quantum spin glass, the quantum $p$-spherical model, using an analytic path integral approach. We find statistics consistent with a direct sum of independent random matrices, and show that the number of such matrices is equal to the number of distinct metastable configurations -- the exponential of the spin glass "complexity" as obtained from the quantum Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations. We also consider the statistical properties of the complexity itself and identify a set of contributions to the path integral which suggest a Poissonian distribution for the number of metastable configurations. Our results show that level spacing statistics can probe the ergodicity-breaking in quantum spin glasses and provide a way to generalize the notion of spin glass complexity beyond models with a semi-classical limit., Comment: 38 pages, comments welcome

We argue that standard tools of holography can be used to describe fully non-perturbative microscopic models of cosmology in which a period of accelerated expansion may result from the positive potential energy of time-dependent scalar fields evolving towards a region with negative potential. In these models, the fundamental cosmological constant is negative, and the universe eventually recollapses in a time-reversal symmetric way. The microscopic description naturally selects a special state for the cosmology. In this framework, physics in the cosmological spacetime is dual to the vacuum physics in a static planar asymptotically AdS Lorentzian wormhole spacetime, in the sense that the background spacetimes and observables are related by analytic continuation. The dual spacetime is weakly curved everywhere, so any cosmological observables can be computed in the dual picture via effective field theory without detailed knowledge of the UV completion or the physics near the big bang. We present a summary of recent progress and remaining challenges in applying the methods and ideas of quantum information theory to the study of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. This tutorial article introduces the physics of quantum information scrambling in quantum many-body systems. The goals are to understand how to precisely quantify the spreading of quantum information and how causality emerges in complex quantum systems. We introduce a general framework to study the dynamics of quantum information, including detection and decoding. We show that the dynamics of quantum information is closely related to operator dynamics in the Heisenberg picture, and, under certain circumstances, can be precisely quantified by the so-called out-of-time ordered correlator~(OTOC). The general behavior of OTOC is discussed based on several toy models, including the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, random circuit models, and Brownian models, in which OTOC is analytically tractable. We introduce numerical methods, including exact diagonalization and tensor network methods, to calculate OTOC for generic quantum many-body systems. In the context of chaotic quantum many-body systems, we show that operator growth, as diagnosed by out-of-time-order correlators of local operators, also leaves a sharp imprint in out-of-time-order correlators of global operators. In particular, the characteristic spacetime shape of growing local operators can be accessed using global measurements without any local control or readout. Building on an earlier conjectured phase diagram for operator growth in chaotic systems with power-law interactions, we show that existing nuclear spin data for out-of-time-order correlators of global operators are well fit by our theory. We also predict super-polynomial operator growth in dipolar systems in 3d and discuss the potential observation of this physics in future experiments with nuclear spins and ultra-cold polar molecules., Comment: 10+7 pages, 14 figures

Microscopic speed limits that constrain the motion of matter, energy, and information abound in physics, from the "ultimate" speed limit set by light to Lieb-Robinson speed limits in quantum spin systems. In addition to these state-independent speed limits, systems can also be governed by emergent state-dependent speed limits indicating slow dynamics arising, for example, from slow low-energy quasiparticles. Here we describe a different kind of speed limit: a situation where complex information/entanglement spreads rapidly, in a fashion inconsistent with any speed limit, but where simple signals continue to obey an approximate speed limit. If we take the point of view that the motion of simple signals defines the local spacetime geometry of the universe, then the effects we describe show that spacetime locality can be compatible with a high degree of non-local interactions provided these are sufficiently chaotic. With this perspective, we sharpen a puzzle about black holes recently raised by Shor and propose a schematic resolution., Comment: 38 pages

We develop a general framework for studying the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of arbitrary networks of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev clusters coupled to thermal baths. We proceed to apply this technique to the problem of energy transport, which is known to be diffusive due to the strange metal behavior of these models. We use the external baths to impose a temperature gradient in the system and study the emerging non-equilibrium steady state using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. We consider two different configurations for the baths, implementing either a boundary or bulk driving, and show that the latter leads to a significantly faster convergence to the steady state. This setup allows us to compute both the temperature and frequency dependence of the diffusion constant. At low temperatures, our results agree perfectly with the previously known values for diffusivity in the conformal limit. We also establish a relationship between energy transport and quantum chaos by showing that the diffusion constant is upper bounded by the chaos propagation rate at all temperatures. Moreover, we find a simple analytical form for the non-equilibrium Green's functions in the linear response regime and use it to derive exact closed-form expressions for the diffusion constant in various limits. We develop solvable models of large-$N$ hybrid quantum circuits on qubits and fermions with long-range power-law interactions and continuous local monitoring, which provide analytical access to the entanglement phase diagram and error-correcting properties of many-body entangled non-equilibrium states generated by such dynamics. In one dimension, the long-range coupling is irrelevant for $\alpha>3/2$, where $\alpha$ is the power-law exponent, and the models exhibit a conventional measurement-induced phase transition between volume- and area-law entangled phases. For $1/2<\alpha<3/2$ the long-range coupling becomes relevant, leading to a nontrivial dynamical exponent at the measurement-induced phase transition. More interestingly, for $\alpha<1$ the entanglement pattern receives a sub-volume correction for both area-law and volume-law phases, indicating that the phase realizes a quantum error correcting code whose code distance scales as $L^{2-2\alpha}$. While the entanglement phase diagram is the same for both the interacting qubit and fermionic hybrid Brownian circuits, we find that long-range free-fermionic circuits exhibit a distinct phase diagram with two different fractal entangled phases., Comment: 8+12 pages, 6 figures, v2 close to published version

We study the entanglement transition in monitored Brownian SYK chains in the large-$N$ limit. Without measurement the steady state $n$-th R\'enyi entropy is obtained by summing over a class of solutions, and is found to saturate to the Page value in the $n\rightarrow 1$ limit. In the presence of measurements, the analytical continuation $n\rightarrow 1$ is performed using the cyclic symmetric solution. The result shows that as the monitoring rate increases, a continuous von Neumann entanglement entropy transition from volume-law to area-law occurs at the point of replica symmetry unbreaking., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the effect of quantum errors on a monitored Brownian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model featuring a measurement-induced phase transition that can be understood as a symmetry-breaking transition of an effective $Z_4$ magnet in the replica space. The errors describe the loss of information about the measurement outcomes and are applied during the non-unitary evolution or at the end of the evolution. In the former case, we find that this error can be mapped to an emergent magnetic field in the $Z_4$ magnet, and as a consequence, the symmetry is explicitly broken independent of the measurement rate. R\'enyi entropies computed by twisting boundary conditions now generate domain walls even in the would-be symmetric phase at a high measurement rate. The entropy is therefore volume-law irrespective of the measurement rate. In the latter case, the error-induced magnetic field only exists near the boundary of the magnet. Varying the magnetic field leads to a pinning transition of domain walls, corresponding to error threshold of the quantum code prepared by the non-unitary SYK dynamics., Comment: 4.4 pages + supplemental material, 4 figures

Ensembles of quantum chaotic systems are expected to exhibit energy eigenvalues with random-matrix-like level repulsion between pairs of energies separated by less than the inverse Thouless time. Recent research has shown that exact and approximate global symmetries of a system have clear signatures in these spectral statistics, enhancing the spectral form factor or correspondingly weakening level repulsion. This paper extends those results to the case of spontaneous symmetry breaking, and shows that, surprisingly, spontaneously breaking a symmetry further enhances the spectral form factor. For both RMT-inspired toy models and models where the symmetry breaking has a description in terms of fluctuating hydrodynamics, we obtain formulas for this enhancement for arbitrary symmetry breaking patterns, including $Z_n$, $U(1)$, and partially or fully broken non-Abelian symmetries.

Recently it was proposed that microscopic models of braneworld cosmology could be realized in the context of AdS/CFT using black hole microstates containing an end-of-the-world brane. Motivated by a desire to establish the microscopic existence of such microstates, which so far have been discussed primarily in bottom-up models, we have studied similar microstates in a simpler version of AdS/CFT. On one side, we define and study boundary states in the charged Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and show that these states typically look thermal with a certain pattern of symmetry breaking. On the other side, we study the dimensional reduction of microstates in Einstein-Maxwell theory featuring an end-of-the-world brane and show that they have an equivalent description in terms of 2D Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to an end-of-the-world particle. In particular, the same pattern of symmetry breaking is realized in both sides of the proposed duality.
