Total S.A. Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie believes that petroleum exploration in the Gulf of Mexico will take approximately 20% longer in the aftermath of the BP PLC oil spill due to tougher regulations that will cause delays in project approvals. This in turn would cause petroleum companys' costs to rise.

Total S.A. resumed fuel deliveries to service stations after workers agreed to call off their strike at five of Total's refineries in France. However, strikers continue to protest the planned closure of the refining complex near Dunkirk. Total recently announced it will reduce its global capacity by 20%.

Affected by decreased production and lower demand for oil and natural gas, Total S.A. reports a 54% second-quarter net profit drop to 2.17 billion euro, and Eni S.p.A.'s reports a second-quarter net profit drop of 76% to 832 million euro. Eni's production fell 2.2% in the quarter, while Total's declined 7.3%. Both companies plan to increase production in the near future as global demand begins to recover.

The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), Petroleos de Venezuela S.A., and France's Total S.A. will discuss plans for a 20-year pact to send 200,000 barrels of a day of Venezuela oil to China starting in 2013. CNPC and China would acquire a Venezuelan oil block, process the heavy crude at a Total-built facility in Venezuela, and then transport it to China to be made into gasoline and diesel for the Chinese market.

Bogged down by 942 million euro in charges and inventory changes, French petroleum and natural gas company Total S.A. reports a 2% third-quarter net profit drop to 3.05 billion euro, and a 24% jump in sales to 48.85 billion euro. Despite a drop in production of 5.1%, sales were boosted by increased demand and high energy prices.

TOTAL S.A. of France is considering using a nuclear power plant to extract oil from its oil sands project in Canada. Although the costs of producing and upgrading the petroleum from the oil sands is far greater than production costs of conventional crude oil, high petrolem and gas prices and low petroleum reserves are making production of the oil sands more feasible.
