Abstract The gut microbiota (GM) exerts a strong influence over the host immune system and dysbiosis of this microbial community can affect the clinical phenotype in chronic inflammatory conditions. To explore the role of the GM in lupus nephritis, we colonized NZM2410 mice with Segmented Filamentous Bacteria (SFB). Gut colonization with SFB was associated with worsening glomerulonephritis, glomerular and tubular immune complex deposition and interstitial inflammation compared to NZM2410 mice free of SFB. With SFB colonization mice experienced an increase in small intestinal lamina propria Th17 cells and group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s). However, although serum IL-17A expression was elevated in these mice, Th17 cells and ILC3s were not detected in the inflammatory infiltrate in the kidney. In contrast, serum and kidney tissue expression of the macrophage chemoattractants MCP-1 and CXCL1 were significantly elevated in SFB colonized mice. Furthermore, kidney infiltrating F4/80+CD206+M2-like macrophages were significantly increased in these mice. Evidence of increased gut permeability or “leakiness” was also detected in SFB colonized mice. Finally, the intestinal microbiome of SFB colonized mice at 15 and 30 weeks of age exhibited dysbiosis when compared to uncolonized mice at the same time points. Both microbial relative abundance as well as biodiversity of colonized mice was found to be altered. Collectively, SFB gut colonization in the NZM2410 mouse exacerbates kidney disease, promotes kidney M2-like macrophage infiltration and overall intestinal microbiota dysbiosis.

Abstract Background Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) might be required as a treatment option in patients with critical pulmonary embolism (PE). However, the clinical features and outcomes of the use of ECMO for critical acute PE are still limited. The present study aimed to clarify the clinical characteristics, management strategies and outcomes of patients with acute PE requiring ECMO in the current era using data from a large-scale observational database. Methods We analyzed the data of the COMMAND VTE Registry-2: a physician-initiated, multicenter, retrospective cohort study enrolling consecutive patients with acute symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE). Among 2035 patients with acute symptomatic PE, there were 76 patients (3.7%) requiring ECMO. Results Overall, the mean age was 58.4 years, and 34 patients (44.7%) were men. Cardiac arrest or circulatory collapse at diagnosis was reported in 67 patients (88.2%). The 30-day incidence of all-cause death was 30.3%, which were all PE-related deaths. The 30-day incidence of major bleeding was 54.0%, and the vast majority of bleedings were procedure site-related bleeding events and surgery-related bleeding (22.4%). The 30-day incidence of all-cause death was 6.3% in 16 patients with surgical intervention, 43.8% in 16 patients with catheter intervention, 25.0% in 16 patients with thrombolytic therapy, and 39.3% in 28 patients with anticoagulation only. Conclusions The current large real-world VTE registry in Japan revealed clinical features and outcomes of critical acute PE requiring ECMO in the current era, which suggested several unmet needs for future clinical trials.

Background: Ischemic stroke is a serious complication in patients with cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (CAVTE), although data remain scarce in the direct oral anticoagulant era. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and identify predictive risk factors of ischemic stroke in patients with CAVTE. Methods: From the Contemporary Management and Outcomes in Patients With Venous Thromboembolism Registry-2 enrolling 5197 venous thromboembolism (VTE) patients across 31 centers in Japan between January 2015 and August 2020, we selected 1507 patients with active cancer. We calculated the cumulative incidence function of ischemic stroke accounting for the competing risk of death and investigated risk factors for ischemic stroke in a subdistribution hazard model of multivariable analysis. Results: During a median follow-up period of 1020 days, 71 patients (4.7%) developed ischemic stroke, and the cumulative incidence of ischemic stroke was 4.0% at 1 year and 4.7% at 3 years. Independent risk factors of ischemic stroke included pancreatic cancer (hazard ratio [HR], 4.24; 95% CI, 2.13-8.43), ovarian cancer (HR, 2.82; 95% CI, 1.31-6.08), lung cancer (HR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.20-4.57), dyslipidemia (HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.01-3.09), metastasis (HR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.02-2.82), higher D-dimer at VTE diagnosis (HR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.04-1.14), and younger age (HR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.71-0.999). Conclusion: In this large VTE registry in the direct oral anticoagulant era, the cumulative incidence of ischemic stroke was 4.0% at 1 year and 4.7% at 3 years in patients with CAVTE, and several independent risk factors of ischemic stroke were identified, including pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, dyslipidemia, metastasis, higher D-dimer at VTE diagnosis, and younger age.

Background Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a life‐threatening complication post‐acute pulmonary embolism (PE). The assessment of CTEPH incidence and risk factors post‐acute PE in the era of direct oral anticoagulants remains insufficient. Methods and Results The COMMAND VTE Registry‐2 (contemporary management and outcomes in patients with venous thromboembolism registry‐2) is a multicenter registry that recruited consecutive patients with acute symptomatic venous thromboembolism from 31 centers across Japan. The primary outcome was to demonstrate the detection rate of CTEPH after acute PE in routine clinical practice. Out of the 5197 patients with venous thromboembolism included in the COMMAND VTE Registry‐2, 2787 were diagnosed with acute PE. Following a median follow‐up duration of 747 days, 48 cases of CTEPH were detected, and the cumulative diagnosis of CTEPH in routine clinical practice was 2.3% at 3 years. Independent risk factors for the detection of CTEPH by multivariable Cox regression analysis included women (hazard ratio [HR] 2.09 [95% CI, 1.05–4.14]), longer interval from symptom onset to diagnosis of PE (each 1 day, HR 1.04 [95% CI, 1.01–1.07]), hypoxemia at diagnosis (HR 2.52 [95% CI, 1.26–5.04]), right heart load (HR 9.28 [95% CI, 3.19–27.00]), lower D‐dimer value (each 1 μg/mL, HR 0.96 [95% CI, 0.92–0.99]), and unprovoked PE (HR 2.77 [95% CI, 1.22–6.30]). Conclusions In the direct oral anticoagulant era, the cumulative diagnosis of CTEPH after acute PE was 2.3% at 3 years, and several independent risk factors for CTEPH were identified, which could be useful for screening a high‐risk population after acute PE.

Vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been distributed in most countries for the prevention of onset and aggravation of COVID-19. Recently, there have been increasing numbers of reports on new-onset autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases following COVID-19 vaccination, however, only little information is available on the long-term safety of these vaccines. Here, we experienced three cases of new-onset rheumatic diseases following COVID-19 vaccination, one case each of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The symptom onset ranged from one day to a few days following vaccination. The patients of AAV and SLE were treated successfully with glucocorticoid therapy, and the patient of RA died due to COVID-19. In the literature review of new-onset rheumatic diseases following COVID-19 vaccination, which including seven cases of RA, 37 cases of AAV and 18 cases of SLE, the mean time from vaccination to onset was approximately 11 to 12 days. Most cases improved with glucocorticoid, immunosuppressive drugs and biologic agents. Although such adverse effects are rare, and vaccines are useful in prevent onset and severity of infections, continued accumulation of similar cases is important in terms of examining the long-term safety and understanding pathogenic mechanism of rheumatic diseases.

Background The simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) score could help identify low‐risk patients with pulmonary embolism for home treatment. However, the application of the sPESI score and selection for home treatment have not been fully evaluated in the direct oral anticoagulants era. Methods and Results The COMMAND VTE (Contemporary Management and Outcomes in Patients With Venous Thromboembolism) Registry‐2 is a multicenter registry enrolling consecutive patients with acute symptomatic venous thromboembolism. The current study population consists of 2496 patients with hemodynamically stable pulmonary embolism (2100 patients [84%] treated with direct oral anticoagulants), who were divided into 2 groups: sPESI scores of 0 and ≥1. We investigated the 30‐day mortality, home treatment prevalence, and factors predisposing to home treatment using the Kaplan‐Meier method and logistic regression model. Patients with an sPESI score of 0 accounted for 612 (25%) patients, and only 17% among 532 patients with out‐of‐hospital pulmonary embolism were treated at home. Background There have been limited data on the changes in clinical outcomes after the introduction of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in real clinical practice. We evaluated the changes in management strategies and long‐term outcomes from the warfarin era to the DOAC era. Methods and Results We compared the 2 series of multicenter COMMAND VTE (Contemporary Management and Outcomes in Patients With Venous Thromboembolism) registries in Japan enrolling consecutive patients with acute symptomatic VTE: Registry 1: 3027 patients in the warfarin era (2010–2014) and Registry 2: 5197 patients in the DOAC era (2015–2020). Introduction: Hemobilia, which refers to bleeding from the bile duct, is rare and difficult to treat. We report a case of successful hemostasis of a pancreatic tumor complicated by hemobilia. Case Presentation: A 76-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a pancreatic head tumor. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasonography-FNA were performed, and the patient was diagnosed with pancreatic metastasis of renal cell carcinoma. After discharge, the patient noted worsening jaundice and progressive anemia and was readmitted. ERCP reveals active bleeding from the duodenal papillae. The patient was placed on a fully covered metallic stent and discharged after confirming hemostasis. Conclusion: Renal cell carcinoma is a tumor with abundant blood flow. If hemobilia occurs, bleeding from pancreatic metastatic tumors should be considered. Additionally, hemostasis using a fully covered metallic stent is useful for treating hemobilia in tumors.

The application of the method of multipole images using re-expansion techniques to the general case of intersecting conducting spheres under an external potential is described. The method is applicable for cases of electrically floating, grounded, or energized conducting spheres that intersect each other and the numerical results for equal radii agree with the case of completely overlapped spheres and that of touching spheres.

This paper describes a simple and reliable method of improving the surface insulation strength of a spacer used in vacuum. The method is to roughen the spacer surface to an average roughness [R.sub.a] higher than 1 or 2 [micro]m. The material of the spacer examined is Si[O.sub.2], PMMA, PTFE or [Al.sub.2][O.sub.3] and their shape is a right cylinder with 10 mm in height and 54 mm in diameter. The spacer is subjected to a ramped dc voltage and its surface charging is observed by using an electrostatic probe embedded in the cathode. It has been found that [R.sub.a] decisively affects the charging, which decreases as [R.sub.a] increases. Increasing [R.sub.a] larger than about 2 [micro]m suppresses the charging until a higher applied voltage is reached, thus improving the insulation property. Summary: We used a step-wheel system to examine the activity of striatal projection neurons as mice practiced stepping on complexly arranged foothold pegs in this Ferris-wheel-like device to receive reward. Sets of dorsolateral striatal projection neurons were sensitive to specific parameters of repetitive motor coordination during the runs. They responded to combinations of the parameters of continuous movements (interval, phase, and repetition), forming “chunking responses”—some for combinations of these parameters across multiple body parts. Recordings in sensorimotor cortical areas exhibited notably fewer such responses but were documented for smaller neuron sets whose heterogeneity was significant. Striatal movement encoding via chunking responsivity could provide insight into neural strategies governing effective motor control by the striatum. It is possible that the striking need for external rhythmic cuing to allow movement sequences by Parkinson’s patients could, at least in part, reflect dysfunction in such striatal coding.

Mycoplasma mobile is a parasitic bacterium that forms gliding machinery on the cell pole and glides on a solid surface in the direction of the cell pole. The gliding machinery consists of both internal and surface structures. The internal structure is divided into a bell at the front and chain structure extending from the bell. In this study, the internal structures prepared under several conditions were analyzed using negative-staining electron microscopy and electron tomography. The chains were constructed by linked motors containing two complexes similar to ATP synthase. A cylindrical spacer with a maximum diameter of 6 nm and a height of 13 nm, and anonymous linkers with a diameter of 0.9–8.3 nm and length of 14.7±6.9 nm were found between motors. The bell is bowl-shaped and features a honeycomb surface with a periodicity of 8.4 nm. The chains of the motor are connected to the rim of the bell through a wedge-shaped structure. These structures may play roles in the assembly and cooperation of gliding machinery units.

Midbrain dopamine neurons impact neural processing in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) through mesocortical projections. However, the signals conveyed by dopamine projections to the PFC remain unclear, particularly at the single-axon level. Here, we investigated dopaminergic axonal activity in the medial PFC (mPFC) during reward and aversive processing. By optimizing microprism-mediated two-photon calcium imaging of dopamine axon terminals, we found diverse activity in dopamine axons responsive to both reward and aversive stimuli. Some axons exhibited a preference for reward, while others favored aversive stimuli, and there was a strong bias for the latter at the population level. Long-term longitudinal imaging revealed that the preference was maintained in reward- and aversive-preferring axons throughout classical conditioning in which rewarding and aversive stimuli were paired with preceding auditory cues. However, as mice learned to discriminate reward or aversive cues, a cue activity preference gradually developed only in aversive-preferring axons. We inferred the trial-by-trial cue discrimination based on machine learning using anticipatory licking or facial expressions, and found that successful discrimination was accompanied by sharper selectivity for the aversive cue in aversive-preferring axons. Our findings indicate that a group of mesocortical dopamine axons encodes aversive-related signals, which are modulated by both classical conditioning across days and trial-by-trial discrimination within a day.

This paper studies the possibility of applying a gas mixture containing c-[C.sub.4][F.sub.8] in the gas insulation of power equipment. Environmental aspects such as global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, recycling loss and toxicity are discussed. Insulation characteristics of gas mixtures such as c-[C.sub.4][F.sub.8]/[N.sub.2], c-[C.sub.4][F.sub.8]/air, and c-[C.sub.4][F.sub.8]/C[O.sub.2] are examined experimentally under a quasi-homogeneous or an inhomogeneous electric field condition. Most of the characteristics are compared with those of S[F.sub.6]/[N.sub.2], which is now widely studied as the most plausible alternative to pure S[F.sub.6], for gas insulation. The experimental results, together with the discussion, suggest that gas mixtures containing c-[C.sub.4][F.sub.8] are possible substitutes for S[F.sub/6] and S[F.sub.6]/[N.sub.2].

The electric field behavior, in particular the field intensification at a contact point, is very important in complex dielectric systems with gaseous or vacuum insulation. The paper describes the electric field behavior at and near a contact point in various arrangements with a zero contact angle when volume conductivity is present in the solid dielectric. Contact conditions are separated into line, point, and surface contact. The effect of volume conductivity is investigated analytically, and numerically by using the boundary element method. The electric field behavior near a contact point principally depends on the absolute value of complex relative permittivity, and volume conductivity usually promotes the field intensification. In the arrangements of point contact or line contact, the position of peak electric field shifts from a contact point when the volume conductivity is higher than a certain value, while in the arrangement of surface contact, the position is usually more or less remote from the contact point, whether volume conductivity is present or not.

By using an electrostatic probe located close to the triple junction on the cathode surface, we have conducted real-time observations of the change in electric field due to surface charging of an insulator in vacuum. A cylindrical sample made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) or [Al.sub.2][O.sub.3] has been exposed to HVDC. An axisymmetric simulation based on the secondary electron emission avalanche secondary emission electron avalanche (SEEA) theory has been performed. The measured results agreed with the simulation concerning the polarity of the accumulated charge as well as the field strength. The simulation also predicts the inception of charging at a voltage well below the measured flashover voltage. These results clearly support the SEEA theory as a macroscopic mechanism of surface charging of an insulator in vacuum.

We discuss the method for measuring surface charge density accumulated on the surface of a solid dielectric (insulating specimen) such as a supporting spacer in gas and vacuum insulated equipment. For such thick specimens, the probe response does not correspond to the charge density directly below the probe, so the measurement necessitates multipoint data together with the aid of numerical field calculations. The probe gives either induced charge or floating potential in response to the surface charge. We compare various previously proposed techniques and give a reasonable procedure for analyzing the data.

A MCS (Monte Carlo simulation) method of charge accumulation based on the SEEA (secondary emission electron avalanche) mechanism is applied to the design of effective corrugation on an insulator surface used in vacuum. The electric field distribution on cathode in the vicinity of a triple junction is analyzed taking the SEEA charge accumulation into account. Considerable relaxation of field strength takes places due to negative charge accumulation with appropriate corrugation. The flashover voltage obtained experimentally increases as the field strength decreases. The result of the MCS thus agrees well with the experimental result.

This paper describes a detecting method of incomplete contact in gas insulated switches and bus connecting parts. The principle of the method is to measure the change in magnetic field caused by the current distribution at an abnormal contact point. Fundamental studies with small-size bus models have shown that incomplete contact can be reliably detected with an opto-magnetic sensor in the case of aluminum enclosures. A feasibility study was also conducted for a full-scaled 300kV GIS structure with more realistic incomplete contact conditions. Keywords: GIS, Contact failure, Diagnosis, Magnetic field sensor

Background/Aims Endoscopic ultrasound gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) is gaining attention as a treatment method for cholecystitis. However, only a few studies have assessed the outcomes of permanent stenting with EUS-GBD. Therefore, we evaluated the clinical outcomes of permanent stenting using EUS-GBD. Methods This was a retrospective, single-center cohort study. The criteria for EUS-GBD at our institution are a high risk for surgery, inability to perform surgery owing to poor performance status, and inability to obtain consent for emergency surgery. EUS-GBD was performed using a 7-Fr double-pigtail plastic stent with a dilating device. The primary outcomes were the recurrence-free rate of cholecystitis and the late-stage complication-avoidance rate. Secondary outcomes were technical success, clinical success, and procedural adverse events. Results A total of 41 patients were included in the analysis. The median follow-up period was 168 (range, 10–1,238) days. The recurrence-free and late-stage complication-avoidance rates during the follow-up period were 95% (38 cases) and 90% (36 cases), respectively. There were only two cases of cholecystitis recurrence during the study period. Conclusions EUS-GBD using double-pigtail plastic stent was safe and effective with few complications, even in the long term, in patients with acute cholecystitis.

Abstract Vacuoles change their morphology in response to stress. In yeast exposed to chronically high temperatures, vacuolar membranes get deformed and invaginations are formed. We show that phase-separation of vacuolar membrane occurred after heat stress leading to the formation of the invagination. In addition, Hfl1, a vacuolar membrane-localized Atg8-binding protein, was found to suppress the excess vacuolar invaginations after heat stress. At that time, Hfl1 formed foci at the neck of the invaginations in wild-type cells, whereas it was efficiently degraded in the vacuole in the atg8Δ mutant. Genetic analysis showed that the endosomal sorting complex required for transport machinery was necessary to form the invaginations irrespective of Atg8 or Hfl1. In contrast, a combined mutation with the vacuole BAR domain protein Ivy1 led to vacuoles in hfl1Δivy1Δ and atg8Δivy1Δ mutants having constitutively invaginated structures; moreover, these mutants showed stress-sensitive phenotypes. Our findings suggest that vacuolar invaginations result from the combination of changes in the physiochemical properties of the vacuolar membrane and other cellular factors.

Abstract Background Platelet (PLT) transfusion was the most practical way to increase patients’ PLT counts before invasive hepatic procedures such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A novel drug that raises the PLT count by acting on the thrombopoietin receptor has recently become available. Methods Lusutrombopag 3 mg was administered daily for 7 days to patients who underwent RFA for liver tumors with low PLT counts ( 50,000 PLT µL− 1 had higher PLT counts before lusutrombopag administration. The degree of splenomegaly did not affect the rate of PLT count elevation. There was no specific adverse effect by administrating lusutrombopag for patients with PLT counts of around 50,000 µL− 1 but > 50,000 µL− 1. Conclusions Lusutrombopag administration before RFA was effective and seemed to be relatively safe for hepatocellular carcinoma patients with low PLT counts. We propose the use of a specially designed polyurethane foam with a plateau region in its mechanical characteristics—where stress remains nearly constant during deformation—between the electromyography (EMG) electrode and clothing to suppress motion artifacts in EMG measurement. Wearable EMG devices are receiving attention for monitoring muscle weakening due to aging. However, daily EMG measurement has been challenging due to motion artifacts caused by changes in the contact pressure between the bioelectrode and the skin. Therefore, this study aims to measure EMG signals in daily movement environments by controlling the contact pressure using polyurethane foam between the bioelectrode on the clothing and the skin. Through mechanical calculations and finite element method simulations of the polyurethane foam’s effect, we clarified that the characteristics of the polyurethane foam significantly influence contact pressure control and that the contact pressure is adjustable through the polyurethane foam thickness. The optimization of the design successfully controlled the contact pressure between the bioelectrode and skin from 1.0 kPa to 2.0 kPa, effectively suppressing the motion artifact in EMG measurement.

Abstract Three pollination methods are commonly used in the greenhouse cultivation of tomato. These are pollination using insects, artificial pollination (by manually vibrating flowers), and plant growth regulators. Insect pollination is the preferred natural technique. We propose a new pollination method, using flower classification technology with Artificial Intelligence (AI) administered by drones or robots. To pollinate tomato flowers, drones or robots must recognize and classify flowers that are ready to be pollinated. Therefore, we created an AI image classification system using a machine learning convolutional neural network (CNN). A challenge is to successfully classify flowers while the drone or robot is constantly moving. For example, when the plant is shaking due to wind or vibration caused by the drones or robots. The AI classifier was based on an image analysis algorithm for pollination flower shape. The experiment was performed in a tomato greenhouse and aimed for an accuracy rate of at least 70% for sufficient pollination. The most suitable flower shape was confirmed by the fruiting rate. Tomato fruit with the best shape were formed by this method. Although we targeted tomatoes, the AI image classification technology is adaptable for cultivating other species for a smart agricultural future.

Abstract A more accurate cut-off value of maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) in [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ([18F]FDG-PET/CT) is necessary to improve preoperative nodal staging in patients with lung cancer. Overall, 223 patients with lung cancer who had undergone [18F]FDG-PET/CT within 2 months before surgery were enrolled. The expression of glucose transporter-1, pyruvate kinase-M2, pyruvate dehydrogenase-E1α (PDH-E1α), and carbonic anhydrase-9 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Clinicopathological background was retrospectively investigated. According to PDH-E1α expression in primary lesion, a significant difference (p = 0.021) in SUVmax of metastatic lymph nodes (3.0 with PDH-positive vs 4.5 with PDH-negative) was found, but not of other enzymes. When the cut-off value of SUVmax was set to 2.5, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.529 and 0.562, respectively, and the positive and negative predictive values were 0.505 and 0.586, respectively. However, when the cut-off value of SUVmax was set according to PDH-E1α expression (2.7 with PDH-positive and 3.2 with PDH-negative), the sensitivity and specificity were 0.441 and 0.868, respectively, and the positive and negative predictive values were 0.738 and 0.648, respectively. The SUVmax cut-off value for metastatic lymph nodes depends on PDH-E1α expression in primary lung cancer. The new SUVmax cut-off value according to PDH-E1α expression showed higher specificity for [18F]FDG-PET in the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis.

Abstract Many studies conducted after the COVID-19 pandemic have examined the relationship between changes in social traits, such as attractiveness and wearing face masks. However, most studies examine the effect of wearing face masks at a single time point, and the time effect is not known. Additionally, few studies address wearing sunglasses, another facial occluding item. This study examined the effects of facial occluding (unoccluded face, face masks, sunglasses, or both) on perceived attractiveness, trustworthiness, and familiarity at two time points, September 2020, six months after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and April 2022, almost two years later, using Japanese higher and lower attractive faces. Results showed that only lower attractive faces wearing face masks had a time effect on attractiveness and familiarity and no time effect on social traits in higher attractive faces. Perceived all social traits were the highest for unoccluded faces, and faces wearing face masks had the same level of attractiveness and familiarity as unoccluded faces. Perceived trustworthiness was higher for unoccluded faces, faces wearing face masks, sunglasses, and both sunglasses and face masks, respectively. Additionally, faces wearing both sunglasses and face masks had the lowest perceived all social traits. These findings suggest that the positive and time effects of wearing face masks are limited in Japan, suggesting a greater positive impact of unoccluded faces. They also suggest that the negative impact of wearing sunglasses is significant.

In greenhouse tomato cultivation, three primary methods of flower pollination exist: insect pollination, physical pollination by vibrating flowers, and artificial pollination using hormone-based chemicals. Insect pollination, the natural method, involves insects (e.g., honeybees) vibrating flowers to collect pollen and nectar. This paper proposes an alternate approach, using small drones to search and pollinate flowers in place of bees autonomously. We report field experiments conducted using these drone technologies. The drone must locate flowers ready for pollination. We developed an artificial intelligence (AI) image classification system (AI classifier) using machine learning to identify these flowers. Equipped with an AI classifier, the drone searches for flowers through autonomous flight and positioning technology. Upon identifying a suitable flower during its search, the drone makes contact to pollinate it. Integrating AI-based flower detection, autonomous flight control for flower search, and a pollination control device allows the drone to perform pollination. This study devises these technologies, implements them in a drone, and evaluates their effectiveness through a pollination experiment.

This article presents the analysis of the electric field and dielectrophoretic force on spherical particles with a surface film. In the analysis, we use the method of images with the fundamental solutions given for the various types of particles composed of a core and a surface film. The concept of the apparent conductivity is introduced to clarify the difference between the particle types. The analysis shows that the response of a particle with a surface film to an external field is unique and generally cannot be obtained by replacing the particle with a homogeneous particle. Using numerical examples, we compare the field and force characteristics between the particles that are of different types but exhibit an identical response to a uniform external field. The electric field and force are found smaller on the conductor-core particle but greater on the dielectric-core particle compared with the particle without any surface film. We have calculated the electric field and force by using the boundary element method in which a surface film is treated as a zero-thickness medium. This article presents an analytical method for calculating electric field and dielectrophoretic force in three-dimensional arrangements of spherical particles. The analytical method is based on the method of images that utilizes the multipole re-expansion and the fundamental solutions for several arrangements of a multipole. It is capable of calculating electric field for various conditions of particles and energization. The method needs much less memory than the already proposed one. The calculation results show that force on a dielectric particle chain in a dielectric fluid depends on the number of particles and the chain direction. However, the maximal attractive and repulsive forces reach their saturation values at about 32 and 12 particles, respectively. When the lower particle of a two-particle chain is in contact with a plate electrode, the dielectrophoretic force on the chain becomes higher on the whole, and it always attracts the chain to the electrode. As a result, the particle chain is stabilized for a wider range of the angle between the chain and the applied field. Neglecting the interaction between the electrodes and particles usually gives adequate accuracy in the force calculation, unless the electrodes are not very close to particles. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Piping in nuclear power plants is subject to corrosion and erosion caused by the interaction with fluids it carries. In order to prevent accidents such as pipe rupture, it is necessary to non-destructively inspect the thickness of the pipe wall and predict the remaining pipe life. In contrast, signals obtained by non-destructive inspection are affected by various uncontrollable and unknown factors, which will result in uncertainty in evaluating pipe wall thickness. Ignoring the uncertainty would lead to a large error in the pipe reliability assessment. Therefore, it is important to develop a reasonable pipe wall thinning management that can takes the uncertainty of non-destructive testing into consideration. Based on this background, this study aimed to develop a piping wall thinning prediction model that accounts for the uncertainty in evaluating pipe wall thickness and to evaluate its applicability to ultrasonic testing. At first, ultrasonic tests were performed to measure the thickness of specimens simulating flow accelerated corrosion. The results of the measurements were statistically analysed to obtain a mathematical model correlating the evaluated and true thickness. A numerical model to predict the reduction of wall thinning with its uncertainty is developed. Compared to the conventional method, the proposed method is able to predict wall thickness with high accuracy.

Abstract Background The spread of COVID-19 infection increased the number of patients who underwent pulmonary resection for lung cancer after COVID-19 infection. It is unclear how previous infection with COVID-19 affects perioperative complications and acute exacerbation of interstitial pneumonia after surgery in patients with interstitial pneumonia. Case presentation An 80-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of a tumor in his left lung. Chest computed tomography showed a 28-mm nodule in the lower lobe of the left lung and usual interstitial pneumonia in bilateral lungs. Bronchoscopic examination was performed, which diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma. Pulmonary function testing revealed restrictive ventilatory impairment, and we planned to perform basal segmentectomy of the left lung. However, before the planned surgery, the patient contracted symptomatic COVID-19. Chest computed tomography revealed ground-glass opacities owing to COVID-19. The patient was admitted for surgery 7 weeks after COVID-19 infection. Preoperatively, pulmonary function testing was repeated, which revealed decreased % vital capacity (%VC) and % diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (%DLco). The 6-min walk test indicated a distance of 500 m, and the percutaneous oxygen saturation at the end of the test was 94%. Basal segmentectomy of the left lung was performed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The patient’s postoperative course was favorable, and he was discharged without the need for oxygen inhalational therapy 12 days after the surgery. Pathological examination of the resected specimen revealed usual interstitial pneumonia in the non-cancerous areas of the lung. Additionally, the infiltration of immature fibroblasts in the alveoli and perivascular infiltration of inflammatory cells were observed, which were consistent with fibrotic change after inflammation owing to COVID-19. Three months after the surgery, the patient was alive without recurrence or acute exacerbation of the interstitial pneumonia. Pulmonary function testing 6 weeks after surgery revealed decreased %VC and %DLco. Testing 12 weeks after surgery revealed persistently decreased %VC and improved %DLco (Table 1).
