The problem of estimating event truths from conflicting agent opinions in a social network is investigated. An autoencoder learns the complex relationships between event truths, agent reliabilities and agent observations. A Bayesian network model is proposed to guide the learning process by modeling the relationship of the autoencoder's outputs with different variables. At the same time, it also models the social relationships between agents in the network. The proposed approach is unsupervised and is applicable when ground truth labels of events are unavailable. A variational inference method is used to jointly estimate the hidden variables in the Bayesian network and the parameters in the autoencoder. Experiments on three real datasets demonstrate that our proposed approach is competitive with, and in most cases better than, several state-of-the-art benchmark methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wedevelop a privacy-preserving distributed projection least mean squares (LMS) strategy over linear multitask networks, where agents’ local parameters of interest or tasks are linearly related. Each agent is interested in not only improving its local inference performance via in-network cooperation with neighboring agents, but also protecting its own individual task against privacy leakage. In our proposed strategy, at each time instant, each agent sends a noisy estimate, which is its local intermediate estimate corrupted by a zero-mean additive noise, to its neighboring agents. We derive a sufficient condition to determine the amount of noise to add to each agent’s intermediate estimate to achieve an optimal trade-off between the network mean-square-deviation and an inference privacy constraint. We propose a distributed and adaptive strategy to compute the additive noise powers, and study the mean and mean-square behaviors and privacy-preserving performance of the proposed strategy. Graph signal processing (GSP) has become an important tool in many areas such as image processing, networking learning and analysis of social network data. In this paper, we propose a broader framework that not only encompasses traditional GSP as a special case, but also includes a hybrid framework of graph and classical signal processing over a continuous domain. Our framework relies extensively on concepts and tools from functional analysis to generalize traditional GSP to graph signals in a separable Hilbert space with infinite dimensions. We consider a crowdsourcing platform where workers' responses to questions posed by a crowdsourcer are used to determine the hidden state of a multi-class labeling problem. As workers may be unreliable, we propose to perform sequential questioning in which the questions posed to the workers are designed based on previous questions and answers. We propose a Partially-Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) framework to determine the best questioning strategy, subject to the crowdsourcer's budget constraint. As this POMDP formulation is in general intractable, we develop a suboptimal approach based on a $q$q-ary Ulam-Rényi game. We also propose a sampling heuristic, which can be used in tandem with standard POMDP solvers, using our Ulam-Rényi strategy. We demonstrate through simulations that our approaches outperform a non-sequential strategy based on error correction coding and which does not utilize workers' previous responses. In the quickest change detection problem in which both nuisance and critical changes may occur, the objective is to detect the critical change as quickly as possible without raising an alarm when either there is no change or a nuisance change has occurred. A window-limited sequential change detection procedure based on the generalized likelihood ratio test statistic is proposed. A recursive update scheme for the proposed test statistic is developed and is shown to be asymptotically optimal under mild technical conditions. In the scenario where the post-change distribution belongs to a parametrized family, a generalized stopping time and a lower bound on its average run length are derived. The proposed stopping rule is compared with the finite moving average (FMA) stopping time and the naive 2-stage procedure that detects the nuisance or critical change using separate CuSum stopping procedures for the nuisance and critical changes. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed rule outperforms the FMA stopping time and the 2-stage procedure, and experiments on a real dataset on bearing failure verify the performance of the proposed stopping time. Although a rich academic literature examines the use of fake news by foreign actors for political manipulation, there is limited research on potential foreign intervention in capital markets. To address this gap, we construct a comprehensive database of (negative) fake news regarding U.S. firms by scraping prominent fact-checking sites. We identify the accounts that spread the news on Twitter (now X) and use machine-learning techniques to infer the geographic locations of these fake news spreaders. Our analysis reveals that corporate fake news is more likely than corporate non-fake news to be spread by foreign accounts. At the country level, corporate fake news is more likely to originate from African and Middle Eastern countries and tends to increase during periods of high geopolitical tension. At the firm level, firms operating in uncertain information environments and strategic industries are more likely to be targeted by foreign accounts. Finding the infection sources in a network when we only know the network topology and infected nodes, but not the rates of infection, is a challenging combinatorial problem, and it is even more difficult in practice where the underlying infection spreading model is usually unknown a priori. In this paper, we are interested in finding a source estimator that is applicable to various spreading models, including the susceptible–infected (SI), susceptible–infected–recovered (SIR), susceptible–infected–recovered–infected (SIRI), and susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) models. We show that under the SI, SIR, and SIRI spreading models and with mild technical assumptions, the Jordan center is the infection source associated with the most likely infection path in a tree network with a single infection source. This conclusion applies for a wide range of spreading parameters, while it holds for regular trees under the SIS model with homogeneous infection and recovery rates. Since the Jordan center does not depend on the infection, recovery, and reinfection rates, it can be regarded as a universal source estimator. We also consider the case where there are $k>1$ infection sources, generalize the Jordan center definition to a $k$ -Jordan center set, and show that this is an optimal infection source set estimator in a tree network for the SI model. Simulation results on various general synthetic networks and real-world networks suggest that Jordan center-based estimators consistently outperform the betweenness, closeness, distance, degree, eigenvector, and pagerank centrality-based heuristics, even if the network is not a tree. We study the problem of identifying multiple rumor or infection sources in a network under the susceptible-infected model, and where these sources may start infection spreading at different times. We introduce the notion of an abstract estimator that, given the infection graph, assigns a higher value to each vertex in the graph it considers more likely to be a rumor source. This includes several of the single-source estimators developed in the literature. We introduce the concepts of a quasi-regular tree and a heavy center, which allows us to develop an algorithmic framework that transforms an abstract estimator into a two-source joint estimator, in which the infection graph can be thought of as covered by overlapping infection regions. We show that our algorithm converges to a local optimum of the estimation function if the underlying network is a quasi-regular tree. We further extend our algorithm to more than two sources, and heuristically to general graphs. Simulation results on both synthetic and real-world networks suggest that our algorithmic framework outperforms several existing multiple-source estimators, which typically assume that all sources start infection spreading at the same time. We formulate and study a multi-user multi-armed bandit problem that exploits the temporal–spatial opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) of primary user (PU) channels, so that secondary users (SUs) who do not interfere with each other can make use of the same PU channel. We first propose a centralized channel allocation policy that has logarithmic regret, but requires a central processor to solve an NP-complete optimization problem at exponentially increasing time intervals. To overcome the high computation complexity at the central processor, we also propose heuristic distributed policies that, however, have linear regrets. Our first distributed policy utilizes a distributed graph coloring and consensus algorithm to determine SUs’ channel access ranks, while our second distributed policy incorporates channel access rank learning in a local procedure at each SU at the cost of a higher regret. We compare the performance of our proposed policies with other distributed policies recently proposed for temporal (but not spatial) OSA. We show that all these policies have linear regrets in our temporal–spatial OSA framework. We consider the problem of estimating local sensor parameters, where the local parameters and sensor observations are related through linear stochastic models. We study the Gaussian Sum-Product Algorithm over a Wireless Network (gSPAWN) procedure. Compared with the popular diffusion strategies for performing network parameter estimation, whose communication cost at each sensor increases with increasing network density, gSPAWN allows sensors to broadcast a message whose size does not depend on the network size or density, making it more suitable for applications in wireless sensor networks. We show that gSPAWN converges in mean and has mean-square stability under some technical sufficient conditions, and we describe an application of gSPAWN to a network localization problem in non-line-of-sight environments. Numerical results suggest that gSPAWN converges much faster in general than the diffusion method, and has lower communication costs per sensor, with comparable root-mean-square errors. Identifying the infection sources in a network, including the index cases that introduce a contagious disease into a population network, the servers that inject a computer virus into a computer network, or the individuals who started a rumor in a social network, plays a critical role in limiting the damage caused by the infection through timely quarantine of the sources. We consider the problem of estimating the infection sources and the infection regions (subsets of nodes infected by each source) in a network, based only on knowledge of which nodes are infected and their connections, and when the number of sources is unknown a priori. We derive estimators for the infection sources and their infection regions based on approximations of the infection sequences count. We prove that if there are at most two infection sources in a geometric tree, our estimator identifies the true source or sources with probability going to one as the number of infected nodes increases. When there are more than two infection sources, and when the maximum possible number of infection sources is known, we propose an algorithm with quadratic complexity to estimate the actual number and identities of the infection sources. Simulations on various kinds of networks, including tree networks, small-world networks and real world power grid networks, and tests on two real data sets are provided to verify the performance of our estimators. We design a impulse radio ultrawideband radar monitoring system to track the chest wall movement of a human subject during respiration. Multiple sensors are placed at different locations to ensure that the backscattered signal could be detected by at least one sensor no matter which direction the human subject faces. We design a hidden Markov model to infer the subject facing direction and his or her chest movement. We compare the performance of our proposed scheme on \15 human volunteers with the medical gold standard using respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP) belts, and show that on average, our estimation is over \81\% correlated with the measurements of a RIP belt system. Furthermore, in order to automatically differentiate between periods of normal and abnormal breathing patterns, we develop a change point detection algorithm based on perfect simulation techniques to detect changes in the subject’s breathing. We consider the decentralized binary hypothesis testing problem in networks with feedback, where some or all of the sensors have access to compressed summaries of other sensors' observations. We study certain two-message feedback architectures, in which every sensor sends two messages to a fusion center, with the second message based on full or partial knowledge of the first messages of the other sensors. We also study one-message feedback architectures, in which each sensor sends one message to a fusion center, with a group of sensors having full or partial knowledge of the messages from the sensors not in that group. Under either a Neyman–Pearson or a Bayesian formulation, we show that the asymptotically optimal (in the limit of a large number of sensors) detection performance (as quantified by error exponents) does not benefit from the feedback messages, if the fusion center remembers all sensor messages. However, feedback can improve the Bayesian detection performance in the one-message feedback architecture if the fusion center has limited memory; for that case, we determine the corresponding optimal error exponents. We study the problem of inferring network topology from information cascades, in which the amount of time taken for information to diffuse across an edge in the network follows an unknown distribution. Unlike previous studies, which assume knowledge of these distributions, we only require that diffusion along different edges in the network be independent together with limited moment information (e.g. the means). We introduce the concept of a separating vertex set for a graph, which is a set of vertices in which for any two given distinct vertices of the graph there exists a vertex whose distance to them is different. We show that a necessary condition for reconstructing a tree perfectly using distance information between pairs of vertices is given by the size of an observed separating vertex set. We then propose an algorithm to recover the tree structure using infection times whose differences have means corresponding to the distance between two vertices. To improve the accuracy of our algorithm, we propose the concept of redundant vertices, which allows us to perform averaging to better estimate the distance between two vertices. Though the theory is developed mainly for tree networks, we demonstrate how the algorithm can be extended heuristically to general graphs. Simulations using synthetic and real networks and experiments using real-world data suggest that our proposed algorithm performs better than some current state-of-the-art network reconstruction methods. The spanning tree heuristic is a commonly adopted procedure in network inference and estimation. It allows one to generalize an inference method developed for trees, which is usually based on a statistically rigorous approach, to a heuristic procedure for general graphs by (usually randomly) choosing a spanning tree in the graph to apply the approach developed for trees. However, there are an intractable number of spanning trees in a dense graph. In this paper, we represent a weighted tree with a matrix, which we call a Gromov matrix. We propose a method that constructs a family of Gromov matrices using convex combinations, which can be used for inference and estimation instead of a randomly selected spanning tree. This procedure increases the size of the candidate set and hence enhances the performance of the classical spanning tree heuristic. On the other hand, our new scheme is based on simple algebraic constructions using matrices, and hence is still computationally tractable. Hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) can simultaneouslyharness the advantages of batteries and supercapacitors (SCs) in various loading situations. Coupled with communication links, cyber-physical HESSs would be threatened by unexpected cyber attacks that may cause damage to electrical devices and even collapse the entire system. To overcome the adverse impacts of attacks, a resilience control scheme is proposed in this article. The proposed scheme provides a unified form integrated with adaptive laws to guarantee multifunctional HESS operations, i.e., dc bus voltage restoration, transient current allocation between batteries and SCs, proportional battery current sharing, and battery state-of-charge balancing, under cyber attacks. The proposed resilience control allows us to establish communication links only among batteries, whereas SCs are free of the data exchange process, which can save system capital costs. The stability of the proposed control is proved by the Lyapunov stability theory. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach are validated on a hardware-in-the-loop testing platform. Recovery of a graph signal from samples has many important applications in signal processing over networks and graph-structured data. To capture very high or even unlimited dynamic range signals, modulo sampling has been investigated. Folded signals are signals generated from a modulo operation. In this paper, we investigate the problem of recovering bandlimited graph signals from folded signal samples. We derive sufficient conditions to achieve successful recovery of the graph signal, which can be achieved via integer programming. To resolve the scalability issue of integer programming, we propose a sparse optimization recovery method for graph signals satisfying certain technical conditions. Such an approach requires a novel graph sampling scheme that selects vertices with small signal variation. The proposed algorithm exploits the inherent relationship among the graph vertices in both the vertex and time domains to recover the graph signal from folded samples.
