Surface adsorption of C$_{60}$ affects its chemical and electronic properties. Numerous studies have reported observation of bright and dark fullerenes on metal surfaces that suggest extensive surface reconstruction, however, the underpinning mechanism of the reconstruction remains under debate. Here we report tip-functionalised non-contact atomic force microscope (ncAFM) measurements which unambiguously reveal that C$_{60}$ fullerenes adsorb with three well-defined adsorption heights on the Cu(111) surface, consistent with theoretical reports of top-layer hollow site, single-atom vacancies, and surface nanopits. Using single molecule resolution $\Delta f(z)$ measurements we identify well defined adsorption heights specific to each site, confirming the presence of a complex vacancy model for C$_{60}$ monolayers on metal surfaces.

We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $\Lambda$, $\Sigma$, $\Xi$, and $\Omega$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cos\theta$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $K\pi$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(K\pi)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $\kappa/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. The design, simulation, fabrication, calibration, and performance of the GlueX Start Counter detector is described. The Start Counter was designed to operate at integrated rates of up to 9 MHz with a timing resolution in the range of 500 to 825 ps (FWHM). The Start Counter provides excellent solid angle coverage, a high degree of segmentation for background rejection, and can be utilized in the level 1 trigger for the experiment. It consists of a cylindrical array of 30 thin scintillators with pointed ends that bend towards the beam line at the downstream end. Magnetic field insensitive silicon photomultiplier detectors were used as the light sensors.

This paper describes the R package mvLSW. The package contains a suite of tools for the analysis of multivariate locally stationary wavelet (LSW) time series. Key elements include: (i) the simulation of multivariate LSW time series for a given multivariate evolutionary wavelet spectrum (EWS); (ii) estimation of the time-dependent multivariate EWS for a given time series; (iii) estimation of the time-dependent coherence and partial coherence between time series channels; and, (iv) estimation of approximate confidence intervals for multivariate EWS estimates. A demonstration of the package is presented via both a simulated example and a case study with EuStockMarkets from the datasets package. This paper has been accepted by the Journal of Statistical Software. Presented code extracts demonstrating the mvLSW package is performed under version 1.2.1.

A change in the number of motor units that operate a particular muscle is an important indicator for the progress of a neuromuscular disease and the efficacy of a therapy. Inference for realistic statistical models of the typical data produced when testing muscle function is difficult, and estimating the number of motor units from these data is an ongoing statistical challenge. We consider a set of models for the data, each with a different number of working motor units, and present a novel method for Bayesian inference, based on sequential Monte Carlo, which provides estimates of the marginal likelihood and, hence, a posterior probability for each model. To implement this approach in practice we require sequential Monte Carlo methods that have excellent computational and Monte Carlo properties. We achieve this by leveraging the conditional independence structure in the model, where given knowledge of which motor units fired as a result of a particular stimulus, parameters that specify the size of each unit's response are independent of the parameters defining the probability that a unit will respond at all. The scalability of our methodology relies on the natural conjugacy structure that we create for the former and an enforced, approximate conjugate structure for the latter. A simulation study demonstrates the accuracy of our method, and inferences are consistent across two different datasets arising from the same rat tibial muscle.

The barrel calorimeter is part of the new spectrometer installed in Hall D at Jefferson Lab for the GlueX experiment. The calorimeter was installed in 2013, commissioned in 2014 and has been operating routinely since early 2015. The detector configuration, associated Monte Carlo simulations, calibration and operational performance are described herein. The calorimeter records the time and energy deposited by charged and neutral particles created by a multi-GeV photon beam. It is constructed as a lead and scintillating-fiber calorimeter and read out with 3840 large-area silicon photomultiplier arrays. Particles impinge on the detector over a wide range of angles, from normal incidence at 90 degrees down to 11.5 degrees, which defines a geometry that is fairly unique among calorimeters. The response of the calorimeter has been measured during a running experiment and performs as expected for electromagnetic showers below 2.5 GeV. We characterize the performance of the BCAL using the energy resolution integrated over typical angular distributions for $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production of $\sigma_E/E$=5.2\%/$\sqrt{E(\rm{GeV})} \oplus$ 3.6\% and a timing resolution of $\sigma$\,=\,150\,ps at 1\,GeV., Comment: 46 pages, 33 figures
