During the education emergency, teachers' leadership was indicative of their capacity to stay resilient and innovative in a changed educational environment. This study analyses their capacity to act as leaders and to promote equity in relation to the specific aspects of the French and Italian school systems. A pool of 16 interviews constitutes a unique case study of teacher leadership for equity under similar contextual conditions. Teacher leadership encountered very similar limitations in both countries. The education emergency per se represented an opportunity for some teachers to explore innovative equitable approaches, different from their actual practices and pedagogical cultures, as well as more professional dialogue. The margins for empowerment proved to be both of an instructional and of a transformative type. In particular, in systems with weak senior leadership and flat organisational structures, the margins for empowerment are at the classroom level. In such cases, a certain amount of collaboration and, quite often, hidden pedagogical innovation occurs in schools where school leadership and the wider organisational culture may offer some support. The articulation of school autonomy into practice nationally, regionally and locally is highly situated in terms of what it enables or impedes with regard to the professional autonomy of principals and teachers. Principal autonomy does not necessarily mean greater teacher professional autonomy. In this paper, we draw on a three-year qualitative study investigating the social justice implications of school autonomy reform in Australia. We present interview data from a case study of a large secondary college to present two conflicting stories of autonomy. Supported by a managerial restructure reflecting distributed leadership, we juxtapose the positive account of autonomy expressed by the leadership team with the negative one expressed by teachers. We explore the justice implications of this disjuncture and argue the importance of critically examining the complex ways in which the intentions and enactments of distributed leadership can be differently articulated and understood within the context of school autonomy reform. To leverage the role of universities in serving the balanced development of basic education, the author was appointed as the founding principal of No. 5 Experimental School Affiliated to Shanghai Normal University in 2021 by Shanghai Normal University. Based on years of experience in basic education research and management, the author has established the educational philosophy of " a children's university with a visible future," as well as the teaching goal of " teaching for the future, learning for the future", which focuses on establishing the subjectivity of children and and cultivating teachers who can serve for children's future development, developing courses that better serve for children's future life, and finally cultivating children who can think big and embrace the future with broad vision, excellent self-expression skills, hands-on capabilities, and creative capacity. This article presents a duoethnographic study by two lecturers of German in a B.A. program at Waipapa Taumata Rau - The University of Auckland (UoA) in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). With an abrupt change to online teaching in March 2020, we had to redesign our language acquisition courses at different levels. Retrospectively, we conducted a duoethnography to investigate our development of courses that are inclusive for onshore as well as offshore students and lecturers. Our personal experiences across different courses are the main data sources, and include our e-mail exchanges, written narrative reflections, and dialogic oral reflections. They served to interrogate and critically reflect our unique experiences while attempting to foster location-based inclusivity. We used thematic analysis to interpret the data into emerging themes. This analysis provided us with a better understanding of the development of our course designs and the role of spatial and geographical inclusion in these courses. Informed by the collaborative reflection of our experiences, as the main finding, we identified three setups and four variations of these for location-based inclusive course designs. In our reflections we illustrate how these designs provided multiple opportunities for contributing to a place-sensitive teacher and learner autonomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research examines the relationship between teachers' perceptions of autonomy and their instructional emotions. The sample included 264 teachers working at various educational levels in Konya, Turkey. The findings showed that teachers had the highest perception of autonomy at the classroom level and the lowest perception at the school level. When teachers' instructional emotions were examined, it was found that among the positive emotions, the highest was the feeling of enjoyment and the lowest was the feeling of pride. Among the negative emotions, the highest was the feeling of disappointment and the lowest was the feeling of anxiety. Importantly, higher perceptions of autonomy were found to be associated with more positive and fewer negative emotions, suggesting that autonomy may have a positive effect on teachers' instructional emotional states. The research indicates that fostering teacher autonomy could be an important strategy for enhancing teachers' positive emotional experiences in the classroom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transformative impact of advancements in educational technology, particularly those powered by artificial intelligence (AI), on the landscape of education and the teaching profession has been substantial. This study explores the repercussions of AI-powered technologies on teachers’ autonomous behavior, digital burnout, and professional development. The study involved a cohort of 320 high school teachers in China segregated into control and experimental groups. The experimental group received instructions on AI-integrated applications and how they might be used in education. However, the teachers assigned to the control group did not receive information on the use of AI educational applications. Three distinct questionnaires probing autonomous behaviors, digital burnout, and online professional development were administered, and the ensuing data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests. The findings elucidate a discernible positive impact of AI-integrated technology intervention on teachers’ professional development and autonomous behaviors. The incorporation of AI-enhanced tools facilitated an augmentation in teachers’ professional growth and bolstered their independent and self-directed instructional practices. Notably, using AI-integrated technology significantly reduced teachers’ susceptibility to digital burnout, signifying a potential alleviation of stressors associated with technologymediated teaching. This research provides valuable insights into the multifaceted effects of AI-powered technologies on educators, shedding light on enhancing professional competencies and mitigating digital burnout. The implications extend beyond the confines of this study, resonating with the broader discourse on leveraging technology to augment the teaching profession and optimize the learning environment. Purpose: This research sought to document the volume, development trend and geographical distribution of the research on teacher autonomy, identify high-impact journals, authors and documents and reveal the intellectual structure of the field. Design/methodology/approach: This paper analyzed the articles published on the related subject in the Web of Science (WoS) and/or Scopus. Based on certain exclusion criteria, analyses were conducted on a total of 259 articles. The data were then subjected to descriptive analyses and bibliometric analyses. Findings: The review found that the teacher autonomy knowledge base has grown dramatically since 2004. In the co-citation analysis, it was determined that four clusters focused on the themes of professionalism and professional development, leadership and self-efficacy, autonomy in language teaching and learning and self-determination theory. According to the co-word analysis in this review, the most co-occurring keywords were revealed to be "teacher autonomy," "autonomy," "teachers," "teacher professionalism" and "professional development." Originality/value: Despite increasing numbers of systematic reviews focusing on educational administration and leadership, this paper represents the first bibliometric review conducted to reveal the development of research on teacher autonomy using both the WoS and Scopus databases. Teacher autonomy can be regarded as an emerging field of study backed up by a theoretical background. Teachers have faced a multitude of demands over the past two years and faced new challenges as schools returned in the fall of 2021. Using the Job Demands-Resources model as a framework, the current study identified factors contributing to teacher burnout following the COVID-19 pandemic. To examine predictors of teacher burnout, the authors collected survey data from 779 teachers across the USA. The analysis included hierarchical regression models including demographics, COVID-19 implementations, and demands/resources to predict teacher burnout. The results found using learning management systems, administrative support, teacher autonomy, and teacher mental health were all significant predictors of teacher burnout at the end of the 2021–22 school year. The results are important to consider for teacher retention and teacher well-being. School leaders must find ways to support teacher learning of learning management systems, provide administrative support within each building, allow for teacher autonomy within the classroom, and support teacher well-being. This study examines the sustainability of educational innovations within a high school setting, focusing on a case study involving at-risk students. The purpose of the research is to explore how the principles of Self Determination Theory (SDT)—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—contribute to the sustainability of educational innovations. Methodology involved semi-structured interviews with two teachers and one school leader to gather qualitative data on their experiences and perspectives regarding the implemented curriculum. Results indicate that teacher autonomy, as facilitated by distributed leadership, plays a pivotal role in sustaining innovation. Teachers reported significant discretion in developing and adapting their instructional methods, which enhanced their job satisfaction and promoted self-reflection. School administrators highlighted the necessity of decentralized leadership and collaborative sense-making to balance autonomy effectively, ensuring the innovation's viability. The need for continuous professional development was emphasized to enhance teacher competence, linking it to the flow of learning and the overall success of the innovation. Conclusions drawn from the study suggest that a balanced approach to autonomy, fostering competence through ongoing professional development, and enhancing relatedness are critical for the long-term sustainability of educational innovations. Recommendations for future research include exploring these dynamics in diverse educational contexts to develop comprehensive strategies for supporting sustainable innovation. The aim of this study lies in the use of theoretically comparative and historically methodological approaches to elaborate, compare, and recapitulate the features, history and the relationship of evidence-based education and the concept of Bildung. The relationship of the continental European didactic and Anglo-American curricular tradition, as well as to the meaning of teacher autonomy and (inter)national external evaluations of student achievements will be given special attention. Evidence-based education degrades teacher autonomy. Constituting the synergy of these two concepts can be considered the contemporary Holy Grail of education, which will probably not be found in the theoretical-methodological differences.

Despite the divisions within Northern Ireland's education system along religious and academic lines, it has managed to maintain relative stability, or at least a functional inertia, over the past four decades. The full potential, however, of this system and in particular, the Northern Ireland Curriculum (NIC), has yet to be realised. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the intricate interplay between the NIC and Initial Teacher Education (ITE), bringing to the fore the footprint of Lawrence Stenhouse. It critically examines the salient features of the NIC, particularly its alignment with Stenhouse's pedagogical tenets, and its subsequent ramifications on ITE, for both its content and pedagogical strategies. The ambitions are, however, not without their challenges. The overarching shadow of an exam‐centric system stymies the NIC's full realisation, presenting a dichotomy between curriculum goals and pragmatic educational realities. The absence of a coherent Teacher Professional Learning framework also inhibited curriculum development. The Learning Leaders strategy, although yet to be implemented due to the collapse of the Northern Ireland Assembly and consequently lack of financial support, has the potential to pick up the baton of reform and help teachers and school leaders move closer to implementing the NIC in the way it was intended. Despite increasing support for models in physical education, ambiguity exists concerning the role of teachers in the implementation of models. Very generally, some scholarship seems to suggest that teachers should work as technicians and use models in an instrumental manner. Other scholarship suggests that teachers should use models in ways that are responsive to the contexts in which they are working. This suggestion positions teachers more as craftspeople. Ambiguity is problematic given that teachers have been identified as 'key players' when it comes to the implementation of models. How teachers are positioned in research may have a significant impact on further research and pedagogical practices. This paper has two specific aims. First, we aim to provide a detailed map of how scholars have positioned teachers within physical education models literature. Second, we aim to provide a reinterpretation of our findings using Deweyan theory. The scoping review conducted here is based on the framework provided by Arksey and O'Malley [2005. "Scoping Studies: Towards a Methodological Framework." International Journal of Social Research Methodology 8 (1): 19–32]. It involved: (1) the development of a research question which was: in which ways does PE models literature position teachers? (2) the identification of potentially relevant literature through searches of the Web of Science, SPORT Discus and Google Scholar databases. The search terms used were: 'Physical education' AND 'Models-based practice;' OR; 'Pedagogical model;' OR; 'Instructional model;' OR; 'Curriculum model;' OR; 'Model;' OR; 'Teacher,' and literature needed to be published between 2010 and 2021 in English, (3) the selection of literature for the review. This occurred as an iterative process that involved going back and forth between the potentially relevant literature and our research question, (4) charting of the literature, done through inductive thematic analysis. This involved a close inspection of the included texts and the identification of recurring types of positioning in the corpus, and (5) a theoretical reinterpretation of teacher positioning achieved in models scholarship. In the physical education scholarship on pedagogical models, teachers are positioned as: (1) resistant to using models; (2) incapable of using models correctly; (3) mechanical reproducers of models; (4) struggling implementers of models; (5) needing models to change their ordinary practices; (6) capable of using models correctly with support; (7) adapters of models, and (8) collaborators with researchers when implementing models. Three issues are raised for discussion. The first relates to the potential disempowerment of teachers achieved by models. The second relates to the relationship between teachers and researchers. Pacing guides are commonplace yet controversial in American public schools. For teachers who question their usefulness, one means to circumvent them is to exercise autonomy in pedagogical decision-making, though doing so comes with challenges. Through interviews, we examined how 87 gifted and general education 4th and 5th grade math and reading/language arts teachers in one large, diverse public school district expressed their autonomy and reported enacting it in their classrooms. Findings indicated teachers' perceptions of autonomy differed, and their reported pacing guide deviations also differed accordingly. Teacher professional autonomy is important to teachers' work satisfaction, efficiency, well-being, and empowerment. However, it cannot simply be defined as freedom from control because it is relational and contextual. In this paper, we examine the relationality and contextual sensitivity of teacher professional autonomy at 'Newstall' College, a senior secondary government school in Australia. The paper draws on a larger study that examined the social justice implications of school autonomy reform in four Australian state education systems. Newstall College was one of the five case study schools included in this study. Findings generated through in-depth interviews with eighteen staff members (including teachers, professional staff, the deputy principal and the principal) are presented that examine teacher professional autonomy. Conceptualising teacher autonomy as relational and contextual, the paper provides insight into the ways in which teacher autonomy was enabled at this school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In addition to pre- and in-service teacher education programmes, teachers' autonomous reading of content related to their work contributes significantly to their professional development. This study investigated the factors that influenced the professional reading of 10,469 language teachers in the 2018 dataset of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Two machine learning models – logistic regression and Support Vector Machines (SVM) – were used to classify light and heavy readers. Nineteen variables related to teachers, including various aspects of their life, education and instructional practices, were used as predictors for classification. The results indicate that the two models had very similar accuracy scores around 65%. Moreover, the length of the reading texts that teachers assign to their students, instruction of reading comprehension strategies, and teachers' own general reading habits were found to be the most important predictors of professional reading time. Grouping by attainment is a relatively new and contested practice in Norway, where strong historical discourses of heterogeneous education are under pressure from international test comparisons, particularly in mathematics. At the same time, research indicates that Norwegian teachers have a high degree of autonomy in education policy enactment. Analysing thirteen Norwegian mathematics teachers' reflections on grouping practices, we seek to understand their decision-making processes within this context. Our findings indicate that teachers report a high degree of autonomy in grouping practices which is exercised through considerable diversity in practice and defended when necessary. Using an ecological model of teacher agency reveals how teachers explore and explain their highly situated practice and its tensions and contradictions. We find that teachers who are removed from the central locus of autonomy have less to draw on in making and justifying their pedagogic choices, while those who are more central are able to continually reassess in this highly sensitive arena. We note the implications for practice and research on attainment grouping, particularly the need for teacher autonomy and support for professionally-based local decision-making. Teachers' innovative behavior contributes to students' academic achievements, school innovation, and even the quality of education. This study aims to investigate the correlations between teacher autonomy, creative self-efficacy, and innovative behavior from the perspectives of Chinese university EFL teachers. The significance of the current study lies in exploring how different motivational mechanisms influence teachers' innovative behavior, providing references for improving their teaching effectiveness and professional development. The main research question that guided this study was: What are the interrelationships between teacher autonomy, creative self-efficacy, and innovative behavior among EFL teachers? This study recruited 297 Chinese university EFL teachers as the sample, inviting them to fill in a self-reported questionnaire to assess teacher autonomy, creative self-efficacy, and innovative behavior. Results showed that teacher autonomy positively predicted teachers' creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior; creative self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between teacher autonomy and innovative behavior. The findings suggest that education administrators should offer teachers autonomous support and tailored training programs to inspire their innovation. Additionally, teachers may work collaboratively with their colleagues and obtain peer support to execute innovative practices, which facilitates both students' innovative performance and teachers' professional development. Finally, as innovative behavior is complex and dynamic, future research may add other organizational and individual factors while considering cultural differences and institutional systems to explore teachers' innovative behavior. Purpose: This study addressed a relatively understudied process of school leadership: the principal-teacher conversation about instructional change. Two distinct conversation structures were examined: controlling conversation and transformative leadership conversation (TLC). Self-determination theory (SDT) was used to make the case that TLC is a better fit for instructional change than controlling conversation. Hypotheses were developed on the relationship between principal-teacher conversation and teacher trust in the principal, teacher autonomy and teacher vitality. These mental states were identified for empirical testing because of their influence on change processes. Design/methodology/approach: The empirical study used a correlational research design with survey data. The data came from a random sample of 2,500 teachers from the population of certified teachers in a southwestern state in the USA. Useable survey responses were obtained from 1,615 teachers, for a response rate of 65 percent. Teachers in the sample averaged 15 years of teaching experience, with 7 years in their current school. Around 81% of teachers identified as female and 18 percent as male and 79% of teachers listed a racial identification as white. Hypotheses were tested in a path model using AMOS 28.0 with robust maximum likelihood (MLR). Findings: As hypothesized, TLC had moderate to strong positive relationships with teacher trust in the principal, teacher autonomy and teacher vitality. Controlling conversation had small, negative relationships with teacher trust in the principal and teacher autonomy. Controlling conversation was not related to teacher vitality in the path analysis. Compared with controlling conversation, TLC had stronger relationships with teacher mental states. Originality/value: The results of this study begin to reveal useful evidence on the inherent social-psychological mechanisms active in principal-teacher conversations. With results indicating that conversation structure has consequences for positive teacher mental states, the study directs attention to a ubiquitous yet understudied leadership process. The Covid-19 pandemic and the associated school closures have challenged teachers to quickly develop and implement effective distance learning concepts. This article examines the success of teachers in meeting these challenges by analysing their performance during the pandemic. Using a mixed-method approach, the study conducts a secondary data analysis of 135 questionnaires from a pupil and parent survey conducted by a German elementary school. These surveys are analysed across the three basic dimensions of teaching quality, elucidating the teaching experiences during the pandemic. The results reveal a considerable variation in teacher performance, highlighting instances where some teachers made inadequate decisions regarding the selection of teaching content or supporting strategies, while also displaying limited engagement with their students. Given the identical school conditions across the research setting for all teachers, this article focuses on individual effectiveness and efficiency of teachers during the pandemic, prompting an inquiry into the extent to which the high degree of teacher autonomy may have influenced performance. To address this further, this article introduces a framework based on current interdisciplinary research findings, which predicts a “too-much-of-a-good-thing” effect of teacher autonomy on teacher performance and integrates numerous established research approaches. This article contributes to a better insight into the performance of teachers during the pandemic and the identification of effective distance learning teaching approaches. Simultaneously, this article proposes a theoretically grounded framework for varying teacher performance, the exploration of which provides a compelling avenue for enhancing teacher performance and serves as a well-founded starting point for further research.

This paper comprehensively examines how school leaders in Kazakhstan managed schools during the COVID-19 school closures. An online survey was conducted with 1,298 school leaders, representing 17.5% of all Kazakhstani schools. Anchored in the concept of crisis leadership, the instrument measured school leaders' views regarding teachers' digital competence, their support toward teachers in digital pedagogy, as well as their practices in communicating with parents and teacher autonomy and monitoring. The results of bivariate tests indicate that a significant proportion of schools offered teachers online professional development opportunities to improve their digital instruction, with school location and size influencing the level of training in digital pedagogy received by teachers. Notably, school leaders' confidence in their teachers' ability to teach effectively online increased significantly after receiving training in digital pedagogy. School leaders also maintained regular communication with parents, but this increased their workload, particularly for women and urban school leaders. Most school leaders allowed teachers to choose online platforms and revise curriculum content, while also monitoring teachers' attendance and observing online lessons. These practices varied based on the school's medium of instruction. This study significantly contributes to crisis leadership by examining practices during school closures in addressing teachers' digital competence, communication challenges, and teacher autonomy, with insights on variations by school type, location, and leaders' gender. The study's findings have significant implications for post-pandemic school leadership, emphasizing equity in professional development opportunities for teachers, effective communication with stakeholders, and striking the right balance between teacher autonomy and monitoring. This article presents the findings of a study measuring perceptions of teacher autonomy of practitioners of English as a foreign language (EFL). This study also sought to identify areas in which Indonesian secondary schools need to improve to enable teachers to enjoy a greater degree of freedom while completing teaching-related activities. Additionally, it aimed to explore correlations between practitioners' perceptions of teacher autonomy and their gender, school location, school status and teaching experience. This was a mixed-methods study comprising a sequential explanatory design with two consecutive stages: quantitative and qualitative. The data were gathered using two instruments: a closed-ended questionnaire and a focus group. The sample consisted of 185 (74 male and 111 female) Indonesian secondary school EFL teachers, recruited using convenience sampling. The findings indicated that teachers' sense of autonomy in relation to seven specific areas of their work was relatively high. Specifically, they perceived themselves to have a considerable amount of autonomy with respect to teaching methodology, instructional materials, course content, assessment, and, more recently, lesson planning. However, they expressed disappointment at being excluded from the decision-making process regarding the school curriculum. The findings also revealed that teachers expected more school support in relation to teaching facilities and professional development. Abstract The literature has widely recognized the significance of examining the influence of teacher professional identity (TPI), teacher autonomy (TA), and teacher work motivation (TWM) on teacher well-being. However, there is a noticeable gap in the research regarding the role of teacher immunity (TI) and teacher emotion regulation (TER) in TPI, TA, TWM among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. In light of this gap, the present study aimed to investigate the association between TI and TER with TPI, TA, and TWM of EFL teachers. A sample of 433 EFL teachers completed the Language Teacher Immunity Instrument, the Language Teacher Emotion Regulation Inventory, the Teacher Professional Identity Scale, the Teacher Autonomy Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were conducted to analyze the data. Findings disclosed that TI and TER were strong predictor of TPI, TA, and TWM among the EFL teachers. The study concludes by offering some pedagogical implications for different stakeholders and discussing potential areas of research that can be developed based on the findings.

A coronavirus disease (COVID)-related educational emergency is believed to have changed some of the aspects of the educational landscape. Sudden changes to traditional structures that are schools are undoubtedly an interesting issue to explore: complex phenomena such as assessment methods are highly related to many different factors such as normative base, the use of technological tools, etc. This article reports on the reorganization of assessment methods in the context of a rapid and forced transition to remote teaching mode, based on the results of a survey of Italian teachers. Findings indicate that pandemic-related educational emergency and the push toward the use of tools in teaching and learning practices, and the corresponding relaxation of certain established frames of operation, have created grounds for alternative forms of assessment. Results show that when entertaining different options and enjoying some level of autonomy, teachers can explore alternative forms of assessment. Assessment methods also change according to school subjects; while assessment changes are discipline specific, there is a clear trend toward product-based assessment.

However, there is a noticeable gap in the research regarding the role of teacher immunity (TI) and teacher emotion regulation (TER) in TPI, TA, TWM among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. In light of this gap, the present study aimed to investigate the association between TI and TER with TPI, TA, and TWM of EFL teachers. A sample of 433 EFL teachers completed the Language Teacher Immunity Instrument, the Language Teacher Emotion Regulation Inventory, the Teacher Professional Identity Scale, the Teacher Autonomy Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were conducted to analyze the data. Findings disclosed that TI and TER were strong predictor of TPI, TA, and TWM among the EFL teachers. The study concludes by offering some pedagogical implications for different stakeholders and discussing potential areas of research that can be developed based on the findings. The article, based on historical and dialectical materialism, derives from the following question-problem: what theoretical-conceptual and didactic-methodological aspects should be prioritized in the continuing education actions of literacy teachers? Taking as a starting point the experience of the researchers at the head of teacher training projects in public schools, the study aims to produce a contribution that critically confronts contemporary legal frameworks for literacy; for this, the main contradictions of such frameworks will be revealed. The point of arrival, which is also the additional objective and the intended result, is the presentation, didactic and with indications for further study, of guidelines for continuing education of literacy teachers, which bet on autonomy, as opposed to alienation. With learning contexts globally promoting putting learners in the centre, it is no surprise that autonomous learning will gain ground in contemporary classrooms. As there is no learner autonomy without autonomous teachers, investigating instructors' preferences about autonomous learning is necessary for more successful language education. The research assessed Georgian teachers' viewpoints on fostering autonomous learning in EFL acquisition. The study employed a close-ended questionnaire completed by over 100 teachers. The analysis concludes that Georgian teachers associate obstacles with a lack of resources, technical problems, and class size, while challenges linked to teachers include lack of experience, limited development opportunities, and time management. International trends promoting school diversity and choice have reshaped education across Europe, leading towards a multiplicity in ownership structures and varied governance configurations. More recently, this can also be seen in European countries with a long history of state-owned and governed public schools, such as in the Nordic states. The aim of this article is to explore autonomy and curriculum control in teacher's work in public and independent schools within a country context where there are long traditions of 'one public school for all'. The article draws on interviews with school leaders and teachers on a Waldorf school, an IB school, and a Norwegian public school as well as analysis of local school documents. The analysis shows that varying school contexts present both different and overlapping characteristics of curriculum control and teacher autonomy. All schools have accommodated to educational outcome governed regimes, however, teacher autonomy in the school context appears to differ. Teacher autonomy is more related to teachers' practices, not the educational outcomes required. The study shows how policies intending for the standardisation of schooling may work in conflict with policy intentions of educational diversity, provided by independent schools of different character. The series of responses in this article were gathered as part of an online mini conference held in September 2021 that sought to explore different ideas and articulations of school autonomy reform across the world (Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, the USA, Norway, Sweden and New Zealand). It centred upon an important question: what needs to happen for school autonomy to be mobilised to create more equitable public schools and systems of education? There was consensus across the group that school autonomy reform creates further inequities at school and system levels when driven by the logics of marketisation, competition, economic efficiency and public accountability. Against the backdrop of these themes, the conference generated discussion and debate where provocations and points of agreement and disagreement about issues of social justice and the mobilisation of school autonomy reform were raised. As an important output of this discussion, we asked participants to write a short response to the guiding conference question. The following are these responses which range from philosophical considerations, systems and governance perspectives, national particularities and teacher and principal perspectives. Teacher autonomy encompasses in its essence the (self)activity of the teacher, the right and opportunity to make decisions and choices, and finally accepting the consequences that come with those decisions. Accordingly, autonomy represents one of the core competences of the modern teacher and it is being increasingly in the focus of numerous pedagogical researches. The purpose of the study conducted and presented in this paper was to examine psychometric characteristics and determine factor structure of the Teaching Autonomy Scale (TAS). The study sampled 310 teachers of the upper-primary subjects and primary school grade teachers from 16 primary, mixed-sex public schools. The researchers have applied Horn’s parallel factor analysis and initially extracted three factors, but due to a low reliability of the third subscale, a shortened version was suggested with two factors and 10 items. The first factor represents Curriculum autonomy, while the second one refers to General autonomy. The conclusion is that the TAS scale can be used in its modified version of 10 items and with a two-factor structure of the instrument.

Student enrollment patterns have been studied during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many families seeking alternatives to traditional public schools. Less is known about teacher experiences in these alternatives. We explored predictors of teacher job satisfaction, burnout, and morale. Of particular interest was whether these presented differently across school types. We surveyed teachers nationwide (n = 798) in May 2022. Three linear regression models were tested. Results suggested that teacher autonomy and administrative support were significant predictors in each model. Private school teachers experienced greater job satisfaction and morale than traditional public school teachers; charter school teachers had greater levels of morale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to explore teacher autonomy from the perspective of teachers. The study has been designed as a case study and carried out using qualitative research approach. The participants consist of 10 teachers in elementary, lower secondary, and upper secondary schools in Milas county of Muğla province in Turkey. The study employed a maximum variation sampling technique to select study participants. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the authors. Content analysis technique was utilised in the analysis of the data. The results reveal that teachers have autonomy in teaching process and in professional communication with students and parents, but they lack autonomy in curriculum design, professional development, and professional communication with administrators. Teachers' autonomy is hindered by the centralised curriculum, centralised educational policy, and school administration. Enhancing teacher autonomy requires a flexible curriculum, an autonomy supportive environment, participatory decision-making processes, the empowerment of school administrators, and professional development opportunities for teachers. The results also reveal that increasing teacher autonomy will not only enhance teachers' self-confidence, performance, motivation, and sense of responsibility but also support students' achievements and their learner autonomy. This correlational research design study aims to examine the mediation role of 21st century skill between teachers' decision making styles and their professional autonomy, based on the theoretical framework. The population of this study consists of 910 teachers working in the Nazilli district of Aydın province in the 2021-2022 academic year. In the study, the maximum diversity sampling method was used and responses were received from 435 teachers through 'Personal Information Form', 'Multidimensional 21st Century Skills Scale', 'Teacher Autonomy Scale' and 'Decision Making Styles Scale'. Inferential statistical calculations were made and construct validity and mediation tests were conducted. As a result, it was seen that the direct effect of teachers' decision making styles on their professional autonomy was 0.55; when 21st century skills were included in the model as a mediation variable, this effect decreased to 0.40 and this value was still statistically significant. In this respect, it was determined that there was a partial mediation role between teachers' 21st century skills, decision making styles, and professional autonomy. In addition, the Sobel Z test was applied to examine the mediation role and it was determined that the mediation effect was statistically significant (z=3.91; p<.05). In light of these findings, the fact that the effect of decision making style decreased after 21st century skills were added to the model, but this effect was still significant, showed that 21st century skills were a partial mediation variable in this relationship. Teachers with the high 21st century skill were found to be able to act professionally autonomous enough in decision making situations. It is expected that determining the direction and roles of the relationship between these variables and presenting them as a model will contribute to the literature, serve as a source for teachers and researchers, and provide inspiration for new studies. Becoming an effective language teacher does not only depend on how well the teacher knows the language but also on how the teacher can deal with the complex situations that emerge in the profession. Therefore, it is crucial to provide novice teachers with opportunities to share with others these complications during their teaching training programs. This document has the purpose of presenting the results of a research which aims to explore how novice language teachers mediate their discussions while they reflect on the emerging conflicts that they have faced during their initiating teaching practice. The study has a twofold purpose: to inquire about the main hardships these teachers deal with and the implications of mediation in their solution. Twelve English language teachers were involved as participants who were grouped in four groups of three each to discuss during 6 sessions. The study used a mixed method research approach that involved discourse analysis of the transcribed discussions, the teachers’ diaries and open observations by the researchers. The results show that socializing conflicts leads to cognitive, social and affective dimensions of mediation; in such a way that mediation reinforces teacher’s self-efficacy and decision making to solve their problems.

This study seeks to reveal the relationship between teachers' autonomy behaviors and their retention attitudes. The research is in the form of the relational survey model. The population is composed of teachers working in primary schools located in Diyarbakır. 18 primary schools were selected from this population, which was determined according to the rule of impartiality. 191 teachers working in these primary schools constituted the sample of the study. In the study, the disproportionate cluster sampling method, which is one of the random sampling methods, was used. In the study, data were obtained via the "Teacher Autonomy Scale" and "School Retention Attitude Scale". Correlation results showed that teacher autonomy and school retention attitude had a moderate, positive, and significant relationship. Following a partial regression analysis, it was determined that teacher autonomy behaviors significantly predicted the school retention attitude. As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was determined that teacher autonomy, curriculum, and professional communication autonomy sub-dimensions are significant predictors of the school retention attitude, while teaching autonomy and professional development autonomy sub-dimensions were not significant predictors of the school retention attitude. The school administrators should create a supportive climate for teachers' professional autonomy behaviors in their institutions in an attempt to reduce teachers' tendency to change schools. The growing body of knowledge on language teacher agency highlights the positive contributions of agency for teacher identity construction. However, teachers may face challenges in effectively exercising agency, and their agentive actions may be impeded by multiple contextual factors. The present study adopts a narrative inquiry methodology and reports on experiences that featured language teachers' impeded agency. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, narrative frames, and open-ended questionnaires. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings indicated that institutional policies were the major factor impeding the teachers' agentive initiatives. The top-down policies of the school had negatively influenced the teachers' autonomy, self-efficacy, and emotions, and had created tensions in and conflicts for the teachers' interpersonal and institutional identities. The study argues that agency may negatively influence language teacher identity construction when teachers' subjectivity clashes with power relations that leave little room for teachers' agentive action and performativity.
