Abstract: This article uses a survey amongst students at European universities to explore whether Russia's invasion of Ukraine has affected attitudes towards European integration. Some respondents completed the survey just before Russia's assault on 24 February 2022, and some did so just afterwards, thus delivering a quasi-experimental design situation, which we exploit. Our results suggest that the ominous news about the Russian attack increased the participants' interest in EU politics, consolidated their attachment to the EU and made them more mindful and appreciative of the benefits of deeper European integration. In effect, the war so close to the EU Eastern border provoked a rally around the supranational EU flag, with convergence of public opinion towards shared European values.

Abstract: International audience; Cellular materials, in particular metal or polymer foams and beam lattices, are characterized by a complex architecture where the material is concentrated in slender struts. This study is concerned with the construction of numerically efficient samplespecific digital twin for the analysis and characterization of the mechanical behavior of such meta-materials. A method to build an explicit, light, and analysis-suitable isogeometric beam model directly from digital images is proposed. More precisely, as a main contribution, the Virtual Image Correlation method is extended to the case of multiple interconnected beams with varying cross-sections. Special care is also given to the initialization for better efficiency and robustness. Synthetic and real examples of increasing complexity, i.e. curved beams, lattices, and foams, are presented to account for the performance of the developed workflow from digital images to an isogeometric twin for mechanical modelling and simulation.

Abstract: International audience; High-performance computing is not only a race towards the fastest supercomputers but also the science of using such massive machines productively to acquire valuable results-outlining the importance of performance modelling and optimization. However, it appears that more than punctual optimization is required for current architectures, with users having to choose between multiple intertwined parallelism possibilities, dedicated accelerators, and I/O solutions. Witnessing this challenging context, our paper establishes an automatic feedback loop between how applications run and how they are launched, with a specific focus on I/O. One goal is to optimize how applications are launched through moldability (launch-time malleability). As a first step in this direction, we propose a new, always-on measurement infrastructure based on state-of-the-art cloud technologies adapted for HPC. In this paper, we present the measurement infrastructure and associated design choices. Moreover, we leverage an existing performance modelling tool to generate I/O performance models. We outline sample modelling capabilities, as derived from our measurement chain showing the critical importance of the measurement in future HPC systems, especially concerning resource configurations. Thanks to this precise performance model infrastructure, we can improve moldability and malleability on HPC systems.

Abstract: International audience; At the nanoscale, the properties of materials depend critically on the presence of crystal defects. However, imaging and characterising the structure of defects in three dimensions inside a crystal remain a challenge. Here, by using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging, we observe an unexpected anomalous {110} glide plane in two Pt sub-micrometer crystals grown by very different processes and having very different morphologies. The structure of the defects (type, associated glide plane and lattice displacement) is imaged in these faceted Pt crystals. Using this non-invasive technique both plasticity and unusual defect behaviour can be probed at the nanoscale.

Abstract: International audience; Additive manufacturing (AM) is an attractive processing route to make efficient use of rare-earths in systems containing complex-shaped rare-earth based magnets. Powder bed fusion using laser beam (PBF-LB) is one of the most promising technologies to obtain fully dense printed parts and has seen significant recent research. However, most works use commercial NdFeB-type powders with a composition more suited for binder based AM methods, which reduces the printing parameter window and does not allow property enhancement by the application of annealing cycles. In this work, a close-to-industrial process route was developed in order to produce a narrow-distributed 40-µm Nd-Fe-B powder, derived from strip casting, hydrogen decrepitation and milling, with a composition close to the usual sintered magnet grades. The composition was adjusted by preliminary small-scale experiments focused on the reduction of cracking and the promotion of fine-grained equiaxed microstructures. This powder was then used to build magnets by the PBF-LB method. The best magnetic properties could be achieved with building conditions providing just enough energy to completely melt the material, yielding nano-grained microstructures almost deprived of α-Fe phase. After laser parameter optimization and post-process annealing, properties of B$_r$ = 0.62T, H$_{cj}$ = 1790 kA.m$^{-1}$ and BH$_{max}$ = 65 kJ.m$^{-3}$ were obtained.

Abstract: We report on the structural, electric and magnetic properties of $(\mathrm{Ni}_x\mathrm{Co}_{1-x})\mathrm{B}$ ferromagnetic nanotubes, displaying azimuthal magnetization. The tubes are fabricated using electroless plating in polycarbonate porous templates, with lengths several tens of micrometers, diameters from 100nm to 500nm and wall thicknesses from 10nm to 80nm. The resistivity is $\sim 1.5\times10^{-6}\mathrm{\Omega/m}$, and the anisotropic magnetoresistance~(AMR) of 0.2-0.3%, one order of magnitude larger~(resp. smaller) than in the bulk material, which we attribute to the resistance at grain boundaries. We determined the azimuthal anisotropy field from M(H) AMR loops of single tubes contacted electrically. Its magnitude is around 10mT, and tends to increase with the tube wall thickness, as well as the Co content. Abstract: International audience; Fluoride (F) is important for enhancing illogical activity of bioceramics. To increase fluoride content of derived Hench bioactive glass (BaG), bioactive fluorosilicate glasses (BaG-Fx) were synthesized by using melting method and characterized using different physico-chemical analyses. Fluoride-containing BaGs were synthesized at a temperature of 1350 degrees C. Structural and thermal effect of calcium fluoride (CaF2) insertion into the glass network in the BaG: SiO2-CaO-Na2O-P2O5 quaternary system was studied. Indeed, the incorporated amounts of fluorine (CaF2) (from 5% to 20% by mass) induced significant physico-chemical changes. Through the structural study by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the amorphous character of our fluorosilicate glasses is proven. Infrared (IR) spec-troscopy proved the incorporation of fluorine into the glass matrix. In the microstructural framework, we revealed the morphological changes of the glass powders as a function of the CaF2 content. These results were confirmed by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) measurements. Through Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) thermal analysis we established the impact of fluoride ions on the structural dynamics and thermodynamic properties of these newly developed bioactive glasses. Accordingly, it was possible for the first time to incor-porate as much as 20 wt% of CaF2 in BaG respecting the conditions of bioactivity and biodegradability required by Hench. After detailed analyses of the transformation entropies of BG-Fx as a function of the added CaF2 content, it can be stated that the intermolecular movements within the fluorosilicate network are more limited as a function of the added CaF2 amount. This slows down the ion exchange phenomena and subsequently the dissociation of the material in vitro, which can be anticipated to occur after implantation in vivo.

Abstract: Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) allows lateral edge epitaxy of transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures. Critical for carrier and exciton transport is the material quality and the nature of the lateral heterojunction. Important details of the optical properties were inaccessible in as-grown heterostructure samples due to large inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. Here we perform optical spectroscopy of CVD grown MoSe2-WSe2 lateral heterostructures, encapsulated in hBN. Photoluminescence (PL), reflectance contrast and Raman spectroscopy reveal optical transition linewidths similar to high quality exfoliated monolayers, while PL imaging experiments uncover the effective excitonic diffusion length of both materials. The typical extent of the covalently bonded MoSe2-WSe2 heterojunctions is 3 nm measured by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Tip-enhanced, sub-wavelength optical spectroscopy mapping shows the high quality of the heterojunction which acts as an excitonic diode resulting in unidirectional exciton transfer from WSe2 to MoSe2.

Abstract: International audience; Image plates (IPs) are a popular detector in the field of laser driven ion acceleration, owing to their high dynamic range and reusability. An absolute calibration of these detectors to laser-driven protons in the routinely produced tens of MeV energy range is, therefore, essential. In this paper, the response of Fujifilm BAS-TR IPs to 1–40 MeV protons is calibrated by employing the detectors in high resolution Thomson parabola spectrometers in conjunction with a CR-39 nuclear track detector to determine absolute proton numbers. While CR-39 was placed in front of the image plate for lower energy protons, it was placed behind the image plate for energies above 10 MeV using suitable metal filters sandwiched between the image plate and CR-39 to select specific energies. The measured response agrees well with previously reported calibrations as well as standard models of IP response, providing, for the first time, an absolute calibration over a large range of proton energies of relevance to current experiments.

Abstract: The advance of mobile network technologies and components heavily relies on data-driven techniques. This is especially true for fifth generation (5G) and the upcoming sixth generation (6G) networks, as the optimization of network components and protocols is expected to be fueled by artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions. When using real-world radio access measurement traces, the identity of individual users is not directly accessible because at runtime operation Base Stations (BSs) assign Radio Network Temporary Identifiers (RNTIs) to users. RNTIs are not bound to a user but are reused upon expiration of an inactivity timer, whose duration is operator dependent. This implies that, over time, multiple users are mapped to the same RNTI. In fact, the allocation of RNTIs to users is implemented in diverse and proprietary ways by operators and equipment vendors. Distinguishing individual users within the RNTI space is a non-trivial task and key to analyze traffic traces properly. In this paper, we make the following contributions: i) we propose and validate two complementary methodologies to identify the RNTI inactivity threshold, and we characterize ii) the RNTI allocation process of network operators, and iii) the user traffic patterns given the specific RNTI allocation process. Our study is based on a large dataset we collected from production BSs of several mobile network operators across five different countries. We find that there exist heterogeneous strategies for RNTI allocation that BSs dynamically use depending on the traffic load and daytime. We further observe that the RNTI expiration threshold is in the order of minutes, and demonstrate how using thresholds around 10 seconds, as in the vast majority of the literature, can bias subsequent analyses. Overall, our work provides an important step towards dependable mobile network trace analysis, and lays solid foundations to research relying on traffic traces for data-driven analysis. Abstract: International audience; The present work deals with ice particle fragmentation resulting from impact on a solid wall. First, a semi-empirical model to predict the size of the largest reemited fragment is presented. It is based on the energy-horizon theory of fragmentation developed by Grady (1988) in combination with a strain rate scaling based on the indentation radius formed upon impact. Model predictions are in good agreement with experimental data from six different sources.In addition, an empirical fit to the ice fragment volume distribution is sought. Different candidate fits, namely power law, Weibull and lognormal are proposed and evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The fragment volume distributions appear to exhibit different trends for impact conditions representative of ice crystals and hailstones. For this reason, a less accurate yet more robust power law fit is proposed to model the available fragment volume distribution data.

Abstract: Optical Mie resonators based on silicon nanostructures allow tuning of light-matter-interaction with advanced design concepts based on CMOS compatible nanofabrication. Optically active materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers can be placed in the near-field region of such Mie resonators. Here, we experimentally demonstrate and verify by numerical simulations coupling between a MoSe2 monolayer and the near-field of dielectric nanoresonators. Through a comparison of dark-field (DF) scattering spectroscopy and photoluminescence excitation experiments (PLE), we show that the MoSe2 absorption can be enhanced via the near-field of a nanoresonator. We demonstrate spectral tuning of the absorption via the geometry of individual Mie resonators. We show that we indeed access the optical near-field of the nanoresonators, by measuring a spectral shift between the typical near-field resonances in PLE compared to the far-field resonances in DF scattering. Abstract: Electron scattering on radioactive nuclei could provide nuclear observables with an unprecedented radial sensitivity for exotic systems. In these nuclei, unique quantum phenomena occur but basic properties such as charge densities are still completely unknown. Precise densities extracted from the scattering data could be confronted to modern structure calculations. Such studies would provide better insight both on the accuracy of the many-body treatment of the new techniques and on the validity of the microscopic characteristics of realistic nuclear interactions used in state-of-the-art nuclear models.Our goal is to build an electron beam accelerator implanted at a facility providing a variety of radioactive ion beams (RIBs), such as GANIL, to perform electron-radioactive ion (e-RI) collisions and measure cross sections and excitation spectra. The measurements of electron scattering can be renewed taking advantage of the combined progress done in the fields of theory, accelerator techniques and experiments.Developments in the accelerator design and electron-ion collision techniques would offer the increased luminosities required for the project from 10$^{26}$ up to 10$^{28-29}$ cm$^{-2}$.s$^{-1}$ for the main physics cases of the first step, expanding to 10$^{29-31}$ cm$^{-2}$.s$^{-1}$ in the long-term range for the inelastic form factors.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the computational complexity of a problem arising in the context of sparse optimization, namely, the projection onto the set of k-cosparse vectors w.r.t. some given matrix Ω. We show that this projection problem is (strongly) NP-hard, even in the special cases where the matrix Ω contains only ternary or bipolar coefficients. Interestingly, this is in stark contrast to the projection onto the set of k-sparse vectors, which is trivially solved by keeping only the k largest coefficients.

Abstract: International audience; The eVADER project endeavors to enhance the technology of lectric-vehicles for the safety of pedestrians, especially the visually-impaired. The research presented here focused on eVADER's goal to isolate features of replacement sounds for electric-vehicles, maximizing pedestrian safety while minimizing noise pollution. It was predicted that 3 sound features (complexity, amplitude-modulation, frequency-modulation) could be the most informative to listeners, allowing for quieter emission. Sounds were synthesized using different combinations of the 3 (features) X 3 (levels). The 9 synthesized sounds were normalized (dBA), Doppler-shifted, and superimposed onto a binaural-recording of a moving electric-vehicle (prototype-sounds). Stimuli were embedded in a noisy background (traffic or traffic + rain), emulating a suburban soundscape. In this simulation, participants were virtual pedestrians, waiting to cross a street, using only sound. In a fractional, repeated measures design, 111 participants (29 visually-impaired) heard 11 stimuli (9-prototype-sounds, 1-electric-vehicle, 1-diesel) over 88 trials. Participants localized approaching cars (perpendicularly). Results indicated that detection of some prototype-sounds was equivalent to that of the diesel car. This was achieved without significantly increasing SPL. Despite normalization, detection varied among prototype-sounds via the 3 (feature) X 3 (level) combinations. This effect was magnified in noisier backgrounds. The practical and theoretical implications will be discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Electric or hybrid vehicles are very quiet at low speeds, which represents a very good opportunity to reduce traffic noise annoyance in cities. On the other hand, this may be very hazardous for vulnerable pedestrians (e.g. visually impaired people). The aim of the eVADER project is to propose solutions in order to add warning sounds to such cars, while fulfilling two contradictory goals : sounds should be detectable but should not contribute to traffic noise annoyance. Different perceptual experiments have been conducted : the first one evaluated the influence of various timbre parameters on sound detectability. It was shown that an electric vehicle equipped with one particular sound was as easily detected as a diesel one, while keeping a very low level. Then the influence of some timbre parameters (pitch and temporal modulation frequency) on the distance and speed as perceived by listeners was measured. Finally, a third experiment was devoted to the consequence on traffic noise annoyance of such warning sounds.

Abstract: International audience; The melting process is studied for the case of snowflakes of aggregate type. Snowflakes are placed in the center of an acoustic levitator with a warm air flow. The evolution of the shape of the snowflake is recorded over time by a camera and the total melting time is measured. A model is proposed to describe the melting process. It is based on a simplified 3D geometric representation of the snowflake (spheroidal shape for the convex hull) and an accurate estimation of its bulk density throughout the melting process. This allows taking into account the very important change of the shape of the aggregate during the melting step and thus to be able to predict the total melting time with a much better accuracy than the existing models.

Abstract: Estuaries are key ecosystems with unique biodiversity and are of high economic importance. Along the estuaries, variations in environmental parameters, such as salinity and light penetration, can modify the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Nevertheless, there is still limited information about the atomic-level transformations of DOM in this ecosystem. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy provides unique insights into the nature of functional groups in DOM. A major limitation of this technique is its lack of sensivity, which results in experimental time of tens of hours for the acquisition of 13 C NMR spectra and generally precludes the observation of 15 N nuclei for DOM. We show here how the sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments on DOM of Seine estuary can be enhanced using dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) under magic-angle spinning. This technique allows the acquisition of 13 C NMR spectra of these samples in few minutes, instead of hours for conventional solid-state NMR. Both conventional and DNP-enhanced 13 C NMR spectra indicate that the 13 C local environments in DOM are not strongly modified along the Seine estuary. Furthermore, the sensitivity gain provided by the DNP allows the detection of 15 N NMR signal of DOM, in spite of the low nitrogen content. These spectra reveal that the majority of nitrogen is in the amide form in these DOM samples and show an increased disorder around these amide groups near the mouth of the Seine.

Abstract: International audience; Fundamental understanding of ion electroadsorption processes in porous electrodes on a molecular level provides important guidelines for next-generation energy storage devices like electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). Porous carbons functionalized by heteroatoms show enhanced capacitive performance, but the underlying mechanism is still elusive, due to the lack of reliable tools to precisely identify multiple N species and establish clear structure property relations. Here, we use advanced analytical techniques such as lowtemperature solid-state NMR (ssNMR) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) to relate the complex nitrogen functionalities to the charging mechanisms and capacitive performance. For the first time, it is demonstrated at a molecular level that N-doping strongly influences the electroadsorption mechanism in EDLCs. Without N-doping, anion (SO 4 2−) adsorption−desorption dominates the charging mechanism, whereas after doping, Li + electroadsorption plays a key role. With the help of EQCM, it is demonstrated that SO 4 2− is strongly immobilized on the Ndoped surface, leaving Li + as the main charge carrier. The smaller size and higher concentration of Li + compared to SO 4 2− benefit a higher capacitance. Amine/amide N is responsible for high capacitance, but surprisingly the pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic N groups have no significant influence. 2D 1 H-15 N NMR spectroscopy indicates that the conversion from pyridinium to pyrrolic N gives rise to a slightly decreased capacitance. This work not only demonstrates ssNMR as a powerful tool for surface chemistry characterization of electrode materials but also uncovers the related charging mechanism by EQCM, paving the way toward a comprehensive picture of EDLC chemistry.

Abstract: International audience; Evidence-based medicine aims at making decisions about the care of individual patients based on the explicit use of the best available evidence in the patient clinical history and the medical literature results. Argumentation represents a natural way of addressing this task by (i) identifying evidence and claims in text, and (ii) reasoning upon the extracted arguments and their relations to make a decision. ACTA 2.0 is an automated tool which relies on Argument Mining methods to analyse the abstracts of clinical trials to extract argument components and relations to support evidence-based clinical decision making. ACTA 2.0 allows also for the identification of PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) elements, and the analysis of the effects of an intervention on the outcomes of the study. A REST API is also provided to exploit the tool's functionalities.

Abstract: International audience; We propose an approach to self-optimizing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which are able to find, in a fully distributed way, a solution to a coverage and lifetime optimization problem. The proposed approach is based on three components: (a) a multi-agent, social-like interpreted system, where the modeling of agents, discrete space, and time is provided by a 2-dimensional second-order cellular automata, (b) the interaction between agents is described in terms of the spatial prisoner’s dilemma game, and (c) a local evolutionary mechanism of competition between agents exists. Nodes of a WSN graph created for a given deployment of WSN in the monitored area are considered agents of a multi-agent system that collectively make decisions to turn on or turn off their batteries. Agents are controlled by cellular automata (CA)-based players participating in a variant of the spatial prisoner’s dilemma iterated game. We propose for players participating in this game a local payoff function that incorporates issues of area coverage and sensors energy spending. Rewards obtained by agent players depend not only on their personal decisions but also on their neighbor’s decisions. Agents act in such a way to maximize their own rewards, which results in achieving by them a solution corresponding to the Nash equilibrium point. We show that the system is self-optimizing, i.e., can optimize in a distributed way global criteria related to WSN and not known for agents, provide a balance between requested coverage and spending energy, and result in expanding the WSN lifetime. The solutions proposed by the multi-agent system fulfill the Pareto optimality principles, and the desired quality of solutions can be controlled by user-defined parameters. The proposed approach is validated by a number of experimental results.

Abstract: International audience; The presence of natural elements in the urban environment improves wellbeing. Comparisons of the different psychophysiological reactions to both auditory and visual perceptions of urban environments are proposed as a method for shedding light on the mechanisms involved in the perceptual audiovisual interaction phenomenon, by which visual context influences auditory perception, and vice versa. The results from combined psychophysical and physiological methodology should improve knowledge of the perceptual consequences of variations in the presence of nature in the city. In this study, 61 participants, mainly students, were exposed to urban soundscapes accompanied by street scenes. Audio excerpts of bird song or road traffic were paired with images with or without vegetation. Half of the participants (n=30) were asked to judge the auditory pleasantness after each audiovisual presentation, whereas the other half (n=31) judged the visual pleasantness of the scene. Heart rate, pupil area, gaze fixations and electromyography of the eyebrow muscle (corrugator supercilii) were concurrently recorded. We demonstrated a strong perceptual audiovisual interaction: auditory pleasantness was higher when accompanied by a natural visual context, and visual pleasantness was higher when accompanied by natural sounds. Electromyography and heart rate were particularly sensitive to the presence of nature in the soundscapes, whereas gaze behavior discriminated only visual nature elements. The natural sounds were associated with lower heart rate and corrugator supercilii electromyographic activity, whereas natural images were associated with slower gaze behavior. Pupil area was sensitive to both auditory and visual stimulations. The pupil was relatively constricted by all natural stimuli and discriminated different unpleasant traffic noise samples and the modulation of visual pleasantness by these sounds. This suggests a distinctive role of arousal level in the modulation of pupil reactions, which appear well suited to the study of audiovisual interactions and the perceptual effects of natural elements in urban environments.

Abstract: International audience; In this article we investigate $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{40,48}$Ca peripheral and semi-peripheral reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon. Data were obtained using the unique coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector.The spectrometer allowed high resolution measurement of charge, mass and velocity of the cold projectile-like fragment (PLF), while the INDRA detector recorded coincident charged particles with nearly $4\pi$ acceptance.The measured isotopic composition of the PLF identified in VAMOS and the average light charged particle (LCP) multiplicities are promising observables to study the isospin diffusion.The detection of the PLF in coincidence with LCP allows the reconstruction of the mass, charge and excitation energy of the associated initial quasi-projectile nuclei (QP), as well as the extraction of apparent temperatures.We investigate the suitability of the isoscaling method with the PLF and the experimental reconstructed QP.The extracted $\alpha$ and $\Delta$ isoscaling parameters present a dependence on the considered system combination that could justify their use as a surrogate for isospin asymmetry in isospin transport studies.The reconstruction of the QP allows to observe an evolution of the $\alpha/\Delta$ with the size of the QP, the latter being consistent with a strong surface contribution to the symmetry energy term in finite nuclei. This leads to the conclusion that the reconstruction of the primary source is mandatory for the study of the symmetry energy term based on the isoscaling method for such reactions.

Abstract: To advance the widespread implementation of electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies, the development of inexpensive electrocatalysts is imperative. In this context, Fe/N/C-materials represent a promising alternative to the costly noble metals currently used to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and also display encouraging activities for the reduction of CO2. Nevertheless, the application of these materials in commercial devices requires further improvements in their performance and stability that are currently hindered by a lack of understanding of the nature of their active sites and the associated catalytic mechanisms. With this motivation, herein the authors exploit the high sensitivity of modulation excitation X-ray absorption spectroscopy toward species undergoing potential-induced changes to elucidate the operando local geometry of the active sites in two sorts of Fe/N/C-catalysts. While the ligand environment of a part of both materials' sites appears to change from six-/five- to fourfold coordination upon potential decrease, they differ substantially when it comes to the geometry of the coordination sphere, with the more ORR-active material undergoing more pronounced restructuring. Furthermore, these time-resolved spectroscopic measurements yield unprecedented insights into the kinetics of Fe-based molecular sites' structural reorganization, identifying the oxidation of iron as a rate-limiting process for the less ORR-active catalyst., Advanced Energy Materials, 12 (14)

Abstract: International audience; This publication lays the foundation for the description of the Multiscale Boiling Experiment, which was conducted within two measurement campaigns on the International Space Station between 2019 and 2021. The experiment addresses fundamental questions about two-phase heat transfer during boiling processes. For this purpose, single or few subsequential bubbles are selectively ignited on a heated substrate using a short laser pulse. A detailed investigation of the phenomena is possible, as the boiling process is temporally slowed down and spatially enlarged in microgravity. Within the Multiscale Boiling Project, the undisturbed growth of the bubbles, the influence of a shear flow, and the influence of an electric field are investigated within the same test facility using FC-72 as working fluid. Within the project, thirteen research groups from eight countries are collaborating. Over 3000 data sets have been generated over an 11-month measurement period. In the context of this publication, besides the motivation and necessity of such investigations, the basic structure of the experiment, the objectives of the investigations, and the organization are described. Finally, first results of the investigations are presented. Therefore, this publication has the primary aim to serve as a basis for many further planned publications and present the project as a whole.

Abstract: This work compares four different image processing algorithms for the analysis of image data obtained during the Multiscale Boiling Experiment of ESA, executed on-board the International Space Station. Two separate experimental campaigns have been performed in 2019 and 2020, aiming to investigate boiling phenomena in microgravity, with and without the presence of shear flow and electric field. A heated substrate, at the bottom of the test cell, creates a temperature profile across the liquid bulk above it. A laser beam hits a designated microcavity at the middle of the substrate, to initiate nucleation of a single, isolated bubble. In the presence of shear flow or electric field forces, the bubble slides or detaches respectively, leaving the cavity free for the nucleation and growth of a new bubble. The growth of such a bubble within the prescribed temperature profile is studied for varying experimental conditions (i.e. pressure, heat flux, subcooling temperature) by capturing high speed, black and white video images. The presence of light reflections at random locations around the bubble contour vary with bubble size and population. This, combined with the refraction induced optical distortion of vertical image dimension close to the heater, make the accurate detection of bubbles contour a real challenge. Four research teams, namely the University of Pisa (UNIPI), the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of Toulouse (IMFT), the joint group of Aix Marseille University (AMU) and Kutateladze Institute of Thermophysics (IT), and the joined group of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Technical University of Darmstadt (TUD) and Foundation of Research and Technology in Crete (FORTH), developed separate specialized algorithms to: a) detect bubble edges and b) use these edges to calculate basic bubble geometrical features, such as contact line diameter, bubble diameter and contact angles. These four different approaches diverge in complexity and concept. In the absence of reference measurements at microgravity conditions, measurements efficiency is evaluated based on the comparison of the estimated bubble geometrical features along with pertinent physical arguments. Results show that the efficiency of each approach varies with the nature of measurement. The studied benchmark dataset is published allowing other research groups to test further their own image processing algorithms.

Abstract: International audience; To ensure safe flight under snowy conditions, aircraft manufacturers must demonstrate that each engine and its air inlet system can operate throughout the flight power range of the engine (including idling) in snow, both falling and blowing. This study is part of an effort to develop models for snow accretion. More specifically, the focus is on the transport step, taking into account both dynamic aspects (with the estimation of the particle trajectory) and thermal effects (with possible melting of snow crystals/snowflakes). Experiments and numerical simulations are compared for the estimation of the drag coefficient in the context of a free falling snowflake. Thermal effects observed during the melting of a snowflake in forced convection are also studied.

Abstract: International audience; The present paper deals with the correlation between intramolecular and intermolecular interactions of polycarboxybetaines. The degree of coupling between the opposite charges within the polycarboxy-betaine molecules was varied by spacers of different length and by the substitution of additional alkyl chains at the quaternary nitrogen atom. In order to check intermolecular interactions between polycarboxybetaines, SANS measurements were carried out at aqueous polycarboxybetaines solutions. For getting information about the interaction with an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte, multilayers were formed by alternating adsorption of polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and polycarboxybetaines from aqueous solutions. The occurrence of a structure peak in SANS spectra and the ability to form polyelectrolyte multilayers provide an indicator for the polyelectrolyte character of some of the studied polycarboxybetaines. Not only the charge butalso the hydrophobicity of the polycarboxybetaines has a pronounced effect on the chain conformation and therefore on the thickness of the polyelectrolyte multilayers. The results show that small differences in molecular architecture lead to pronounced differences in intermolecular interactions.

Abstract: International audience; In practical applications, non-Gaussianity of the signal at the sensor array is detrimental to the performance of conventional Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimators developed under the Gaussian model. In this paper, we propose a novel robust DOA estimator from the data collected at the sensor array under the corruption of non-Gaussian interference and noise. Additionally, the Cramér-Rao bound for DOA parameters under the considered signal model is derived. Simulation results show that the proposed estimator exhibits near-optimal estimation performance under the assumed model while being robust to model mismatch and/or the presence of outliers.

Abstract: A straightforward one‐step process was developed, in which CO2 gas is directly converted into multi‐layer graphene via atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD). A bimetallic alloy film based on Cu and Pd was employed as the catalyst and substrate. In this study, we found that the quantity of Cu required for the CO2 conversion process is high (>82 at %). The findings gained in this study serve as a foundation for further studies of metallic alloys for the thermo‐reduction of CO2 to graphene under CVD conditions., Green graphene: Herein we report the direct conversion of CO2 gas to graphene. We achieve this one‐step process through a combination of the reductive power of hydrogen and the catalytic properties of a Cu–Pd alloy.
