International audience; We present a numerical approach for the solution of EM scattering from a dielectric cylinder partially covered with graphene. It is based on a clas- sical Fourier-Bessel expansion of the fields inside and outside the cylinder to which we apply the ad-hoc boundary conditions in the presence of graphene. Due to the singular nature of the electric field at the ends of the graphene sheet, we introduce auxiliary boundary conditions to better take this reality into ac- count. The result is a very simple and very efficient method allowing the study of diffraction from such structures. Our ultimate goal is to apply this approach to radiative heat transfer between graphene coated cylinders and planes.

This work demonstrates the magnetic field-induced spectral properties of metamaterials incorporating both indium antimonide (InSb) and tungsten (W) in the terahertz (THz) frequency regime. Nanostructure materials, layer thicknesses and surface grating fill factors are modified, impacting light-matter interactions and consequently modifying thermal emission. We describe and validate a method for determining spectral properties of InSb under an applied direct current (DC) magnetic field, and employ this method to analyze how these properties can be tuned by modulating the field magnitude. Notably, an InSb-W metamaterial exhibiting unity narrowband emission is designed, suitable as an emitter for wavelengths around 55 µm (approximately 5.5 THz), which is magnetically tunable in bandwidth and peak wavelength.

International audience; We will discuss recent results: (i) on the Casimir torque between two metallic one-dimensionalgratings rotated by an angle θ with respect to each other; and (ii) on the Casimir force occurring between interpenetrating gratings. These findings pave the way to the design of acontactless quantum vacuum torsional spring, and sensors with possible relevance to microand nanomechanical devices.

Twisted two-dimensional bilayer materials exhibit many exotic physical phenomena. Manipulating the twist angle between the two layers enables fine control of the physical structure, resulting in development of many novel physics, such as the magic-angle flat-band superconductivity, the formation of moire exciton and interlayer magnetism. Here, combined with analogous principles, we study theoretically the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two twisted hyperbolic systems. This two twisted hyperbolic systems are mirror images of each other. Each twisted hyperbolic system is composed of two graphene gratings, where there is an angle {\phi} between this two graphene gratings. By analyzing the photonic transmission coefficient as well as the plasmon dispersion relation of twisted hyperbolic system, we prove that the topological transitions of the surface state at a special angle (from open (hyperbolic) to closed (elliptical) contours) can modulate efficiently the radiative heat transfer. Meanwhile the role of the thickness of dielectric spacer and vacuum gap on the manipulating the topological transitions of the surface state and the NFRHT are also discussed. We predict the hysteresis effect of topological transitions at a larger vacuum gap, and demonstrate that as thickness of dielectric spacer increase, the transition from the enhancement effect of heat transfer caused by the twisted hyperbolic system to a suppression. This technology could novel mechanism and control method for NFRHT, and may open a promising pathway for highly efficient thermal management, energy harvesting, and subwavelength thermal imaging.

We perform a detailed analysis of electronic polarizability of graphene with different theoretical approaches. From Kubo's linear response formalism, we give a general expression of frequency and wave-vector dependent polarizability within the random phase approximation. Four theoretical approaches have been applied to the single-layer graphene and their differences are on the band-overlap of wavefunctions. By comparing with the \textit{ab initio} calculation, we discuss the validity of methods used in literature. Our results show that the tight-binding method is as good as the time-demanding \textit{ab initio} approach in calculating the polarizability of graphene. Moreover, due to the special Dirac-cone band structure of graphene, the Dirac model reproduces results of the tight-binding method for energy smaller than \SI{3}{\electronvolt}. For doped graphene, the intra-band transitions dominate at low energies and can be described by the Lindhard formula for two-dimensional electron gases. At zero temperature and long-wavelength limit, with the relaxation time approximation, all theoretical methods reduce to a long-wave analytical formula and the intra-band contributions agree to the Drude polarizability of graphene. Effects of electrical doping and temperature are also discussed. This work may provide a solid reference for researches and applications of the screening effect of graphene., 10 pages, 6 figures

International audience; We present a theoretical study of near-field radiative thermal rectification combining phase-transition and high-infrared-transmittance materials. The phase-transition material vanadium dioxide (VO2), with a metal–insulator transition near 341 K, is utilized under a reasonable temperature. Four types of high-infrared-transmittance materials, including potassium bromide, sodium chloride, polyethylene, andmagnesium fluoride, are introduced as thin film substrates under a VO2 grating on one side of the near-field rectifier. We explore the effects of various high-infrared-transmittance thin-film substrates and relevant geometric parameters on the thermal rectification of the device. The results show that thermal rectification can be greatly enhanced by using a one-dimensional VO2 grating backed with a high-infraredtransmittance thin-film substrate. With the introduction of a high-infrared-transmittance substrate, the rectification ratio is dramatically boosted due to the enhancement of the substrate transmittance. This work predicts a remarkable rectification ratio as high as 161—greater than the recently reported peak values for comparable near-field radiative thermal rectification. The results outlined herein will shed light on the rapidly expanding fields of nanoscale thermal harvesting, conversion, and management.

Passive radiative cooling, drawing heat energy of objects to the cold outer space through the atmospheric transparent window, is significant for reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Daytime and nighttime radiative cooling have been extensively investigated in the past. However, radiative cooling which can continuously regulate its cooling temperature, like a valve, according to human need is rarely reported. In this study, we propose a reconfigurable photonic structure, based on the effective medium theory and semi-analytical calculations, for the adaptive radiative cooling by continuous variation of the emission spectra in the atmospheric window. This is realized by the deformation of a one-dimensional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) grating and nanoparticle-embedded PDMS thin film when subjected to mechanical stress/strain. The proposed structure reaches different stagnation temperatures under certain strains. A dynamic tuning in emissivity under different strains results in a continuously variable “ON”/“OFF” mode in a particular atmospheric window that corresponds to the deformation-induced fluctuation of the operating temperatures of the reconfigurable nanophotonic structure.

Quantum fluctuations give rise to Casimir forces between two parallel conducting plates, the magnitude of which increases monotonically as the separation decreases. By introducing nanoscale gratings to the surfaces, recent advances have opened opportunities for controlling the Casimir force in complex geometries. Here, we measure the Casimir force between two rectangular gratings in regimes not accessible before. Using an on-chip detection platform, we achieve accurate alignment between the two gratings so that they interpenetrate as the separation is reduced. Just before interpenetration occurs, the measured Casimir force is found to have a geometry dependence that is much stronger than previous experiments, with deviations from the proximity force approximation reaching a factor of ~500. After the gratings interpenetrate each other, the Casimir force becomes non-zero and independent of displacement. We consider thermal machines powered by locally equilibrium reservoirs that share classical or quantum correlations. The reservoirs are modelled by the so-called collisional model or repeated interactions model. In our framework, two reservoir particles, initially prepared in a thermal state, are correlated through a unitary transformation and afterwards interact locally with the two quantum subsystems which form the working fluid. For a particular class of unitaries, we show how the transformation applied to the reservoir particles affects the amount of heat transferred and the work produced. We then compute the distribution of heat and work when the unitary is chosen randomly, proving that the total swap transformation is the optimal one. Finally, we analyse the performance of the machines in terms of classical and quantum correlations established among the microscopic constituents of the machine., Comment: Accepted version

We study the near-field radiative heat transfer between two twisted finite-size polar dielectric nanoparticle gratings. Differently from previous studies of the same configuration, we do not rely on any approximated effective medium theory to describe the gratings. By the full many-body radiative heat transfer theory we are able to investigate how the size, distance and relative orientation between the gratings influence the radiative heat flux. By changing the twisting angle $\theta$, we show a significant oscillation of the thermal conductance $G(\theta)$, due to the size effect for gratings of both square and circular shapes. The distance- and twisting-dependent coupling between the gratings accounts for a strong and characteristic modulation of radiative thermal conductance with implications for the energy management, sensing, and NEMS/MEMS devices., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

International audience; Radiative heat transfer (RHT) and radiative thermal energy (RTE) for two-dimensional (2D) nanoparticle en- sembles are investigated in the framework of many-body radiative heat transfer theory. We consider nanoparticles made of different materials: metals (Ag), polar dielectrics (SiC), or insulator-metallic phase-change materials (VO2). We start by investigating the RHT between two parallel 2D finite-size square-lattice nanoparticle ensembles, with particular attention to many-body interactions (MBI) effects. We fix the particle radius (a) as the smallest length scale, and we describe the electromagnetic scattering from particles within the dipole approximation. Depending on the minimal distance between the in-plane particles (the lattice spacing p for periodic systems), on the separation d between the two lattice and on the thermal wavelength λT = h ̄c/kBT, we systematically analyze the different physical regimes characterizing the RHT. Four regimes are identified, rarefied regime, dense regime, non-MBI regime, and MBI regime, respectively. When p ≪ λT , a multiple scattering of the electromagnetic field inside the systems gives rise to a MBI regime. MBI effects manifest themselves in different ways, depending on the separation d: (a) If d > λT , due to the pure intra-ensemble MBI inside each 2D ensemble, the total heat conductance is less affected, and the thermal conductance spectrum manifests a single peak which is nonetheless shifted with respect to the one typical of two isolated nanoparticles. (b) If d < λT , there is a strong simultaneous intra-ensemble and inter-ensemble MBI. In this regime there is a direct quantitative effect on the heat conductance, in addition to a qualitative effect on the thermal conductance spectrum, which now manifests a new second peak. As for the RTE, to correctly describe the radiation emitted by metallic nanoparticles, we derive an expression of the Poynting vector including also magnetic contribution, in addition to the electric one. By analyzing both periodic and nonperiodic ensembles, we show that the RTE emitted by a single 2D nanoparticle ensemble is sensitive to the particle distribution. As instance, we see that the RTE emitted by 2D concentric-ring-configuration ensemble has an inhibition feature near the center of the ensemble.

We investigate the possibility of spatially and spectrally controlling the thermal infrared emission by exploitation of the Yagi-Uda antenna design. Hybrid antennas composed of both SiC and Au rods are considered and the contributions of emission from all the elements, at a given equilibrium temperature, are taken into account. We show that the detrimental effect due to thermal emission from the not ideal parasitic elements drastically affect the performances of conventional thermal Au antennas in the 12 micrometers wavelength range. Nevertheless, our results show that the hybrid approach allows the development of efficient narrow-band and high directivity sources. The possibility of exploiting the Yagi-Uda design both in transmission and in reception modes, may open the way to the realization of miniaturized, efficient, robust and cheap sensor devices for mass-market applications., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

By using the self-consistent Born approximation, we investigate disorder effect induced by the short-range impurities on the band-gap in two-dimensional Dirac systems with the higher order terms in momentum. Starting from the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model, we calculate the density-of-states as a function of the disorder strength. We show that due to quadratic corrections to the Dirac Hamiltonian, the band-gap is always affected by the disorder even if the system is gapless in the clean limit. Finally, we explore the disorder effects by using an advanced effective Hamiltonian describing the side maxima of the valence subband in HgTe~quantum wells. We show that the band-gap and disorder-induced topological phase transition in the real structures may differ significantly from those predicted within the BHZ model., Comment: 6 pages, 5 fugures and supplemental materials

International audience; In this Letter, active control of near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two isotropic materials is realized by a coating-twisting method. The two slabs are coated with graphene gratings, and then the NFRHT can be not only enhanced but also weakened, by tuning the twisted angle between the two gratings. The physical mechanism is attributed to the modes coupled by the graphene gratings and the isotropic material, which can vary with the twisted angle. The proposed method is also applicable for other kinds of anisotropic films and may provide a way to realize high-precision nanoscale thermal management, nimble thermal communications, and thermal switch.

International audience; Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface between a gyrotropic medium and a simple medium are studied in a newly recognized frequency regime wherein the SPPs form narrow, beam-like patterns due to quasi-hyperbolic dispersion. The SPP beams are steerable by controlling parameters such as the cyclotron frequency (external magnetic bias) or the frequency of operation. The bulk band structure along different propagation directions is examined to ascertain a common bulk bandgap, valid for all propagation directions, which the SPPs cross. In addition, group velocity and Poynting vector for the SPPs are presented. The case of a finite-thickness gyrotropic slab is also considered, for which we present the Green function and examine the thickness and loss level required to maintain a unidirectional SPP.

In this paper, magnetoplasmonic manipulation of near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) is realized using two twisted graphene gratings. As a result of the quantum Hall regime of magneto-optical graphene and the grating effect, three types of graphene surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) modes are observed in the system: near-zero modes, high-frequency hyperbolic modes, and elliptic modes. The elliptic SPPs modes, which are caused by the combined effect of magnetic field and grating, are observed in the graphene grating system for the first time. In addition, the near-zero modes can be greatly enhanced by the combined effect grating and magnetic field, rendering graphene devices promising for thermal communication at ultra-low frequency. In particular, the near-zero modes result in a unique enhancement region of heat transfer, no matter for any twisted angle between gratings. The combined effect of grating and magnetic field is investigated simultaneously. By changing the strength of magnetic field, the positions and intensities of the modes can be modulated, and hence the NFRHT can be tuned accordingly, no matter for parallel or twisted graphene gratings. The magnetic field endows the grating action (graphene filling factors and twisted angles) with a higher modulation ability to modulate the NFRHT compared with zero-field. Moreover, the modulation ability of twist can be tuned by the magnetic field at different twisted angles. In sum, the combined effect of magnetic field and grating provides a tunable way to realize the energy modulation or multi-frequency thermal communications related to graphene devices.

We address the problem of hybridization between topological surface states and a non-topological flat bulk band. Our model, being a mixture of three-dimensional Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang and two-dimensional pseudospin-1 Hamiltonian, allows explicit treatment of the topological surface state evolution by continuously changing the hybridization between the inverted bands and an additional "parasitic" flat band in the bulk. We show that the hybridization with a flat band lying below the edge of conduction band converts the initial Dirac-like surface states into a branch below and one above the flat band. Our results univocally demonstrate that the upper branch of the topological surface states is formed by Dyakonov-Khaetskii surface states known for HgTe since the 1980s. Additionally we explore an evolution of the surface states and the arising of Fermi arcs in Dirac semimetals when the flat band crosses the conduction band., 10 pages, 5 figures

In dense systems composed of numerous nanoparticles, direct simulations of near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) require considerable computational resources. NFRHT for the simple one-dimensional nanoparticle chains embedded in a non-absorbing host medium is investigated from the point of view of the continuum by means of an approach combining the many-body radiative heat transfer theory and the Fourier law. Effects of the phase change of the insulator-metal transition material (VO$_2$), the complex many-body interaction (MBI) and the host medium relative permittivity on the characteristic effective thermal conductivity (ETC) are analyzed. The ETC for VO$_2$ nanoparticle chains below the transition temperature can be as high as 50 times of that above the transition temperature due to the phase change effect. The strong coupling in the insulator-phase VO$_2$ nanoparticle chain accounts for its high ETC as compared to the low ETC for the chain at the metallic phase, where there is a mismatch between the characteristic thermal frequency and resonance frequency. The strong MBI is in favor of the ETC. For SiC nanoparticle chains, the MBI even can double the ETC as compared to those without considering the MBI effect. For the dense chains, a strong MBI enhances the ETC due to the strong inter-particles couplings. When the chains go more and more dilute, the MBI can be neglected safely due to negligible couplings. The host medium relative permittivity significantly affects the inter-particles couplings, which accounts for the permittivity-dependent ETC for the VO$_2$ nanoparticle chains., Comment: 10 figures with captions,27 pages

Metasurfaces, the two-dimensional (2D) counterpart of metamaterials, have recently attracted a great attention due to their amazing properties such as negative refraction, hyperbolic dispersion, manipulation of the evanescent spectrum. In this work, we propose a theory model for the near field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two nanoparticles in the presence of an anisotropic metasurface. Specifically, we set the metasurface as an array of graphene strips (GS) since it is an ideal platform to implement any metasurface topology, ranging from isotropic to hyperbolic propagation. We show that the NFRHT between two nanoparticles can not only be significantly amplified when they are placed in proximity of the GS, but also be regulated over several orders of magnitude. In this configuration, the anisotropic surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) supported by the GS are excited and provide a new channel for the near-field energy transport. We analyze how the conductance between two nanoparticles depends on the orientation, the structure parameters and the chemical potential of the GS, on the particle-surface or the particle-surface distances by clearly identifying the characteristics of the anisotropic SPPs such as dispersion relations, propagation length and decay length. We show that periodic multilayered structures allow to drastically enhance near-field radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles. In particular, when the two nanoparticles are placed on each side of the multilayered structure, at the same interparticle distance the resulting heat transfer is more than five orders of magnitude higher than that in the absence of the multilayered structure. This enhancement takes place in a broad range of distances and is due to the fact that the intermediate multilayered structure supports hyperbolic phonon polaritons with the key feature that the edge frequencies of the Type I and Type II Reststrahlen bands coincide with each other at a value extremely close to the particle resonance. This allow a very high-k evanescent modes resonating with the nanoparticles. Our predictions can be relevant for effective managing of energy at the nano-scale., 6 pages,4 figures

International audience; Heat flux exchanged between two hot bodies at subwavelength separation distances can exceed the limitpredicted by the blackbody theory. However, this super-Planckian transfer is restricted to these separationdistances. Here we demonstrate the possible existence of a super-Planckian transfer at arbitrary large separationdistances if the interacting bodies are connected in the near field with weakly dissipating hyperbolic waveguides.This result opens the way to long-distance transport of near-field thermal energy.

International audience; We investigate the quantum optical torque on an atom interacting with an inhomogeneous electromagneticenvironment described by the most general linear constitutive relations. The atom is modeled as a two-levelsystem prepared in an arbitrary initial energy state. Using the Heisenberg equation of motion (HEM) and underthe Markov approximation, we show that the optical torque has a resonant and nonresonant part, associated,respectively, with a spontaneous-emission process and Casimir-type interactions with the quantum vacuum,which can both be written explicitly in terms of the system Green function. Our formulation is valid forany three-dimensional inhomogeneous, dissipative, dispersive, nonreciprocal, and bianisotropic structure. Weapply this general theory to a scenario in which the atom interacts with a material characterized by strongnonreciprocity and modal unidirectionality. In this case, the main decay channel of the atom energy is representedby the unidirectional surface waves launched at the nonreciprocal material-vacuum interface. To provide relevantphysical insight into the role of these unidirectional surface waves in the emergence of nontrivial optical torque,we derive closed-form expressions for the induced torque under the quasistatic approximation. Finally, weinvestigate the equilibrium states of the atom polarization, along which the atom spontaneously tends to aligndue to the action of the torque. Our theoretical predictions may be experimentally tested with cold Rydbergatoms and superconducting qubits near a nonreciprocal material. We believe that our general theory may findbroad application in the context of nanomechanical and biomechanical systems.

International audience; Based on the theory of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we generalize the expression of theCasimir force for nonreciprocal media. The essential ingredient of this result is the Green’s tensor betweentwo nonreciprocal semi-infinite slabs, including a reflexion matrix with four coefficients that mixes opticalpolarizations. This Green’s tensor does not obey Lorentz’s reciprocity and thus violates time-reversal symmetry.The general result for the Casimir force is analyzed in the retarded and nonretarded limits, concentrating on theinfluences arising from reflections with or without change of polarization. In a second step, we apply our generalresult to a photonic topological insulator whose nonreciprocity stems from an anisotropic permittivity tensor,namely InSb. We show that there is a regime for the distance between the slabs where the magnitude of theCasimir force is tunable by an external magnetic field. Furthermore, the strength of this tuning depends on theorientation of the magnetic field with respect to the slab surfaces.

International audience; Light-matter interactions in conventional nanophotonic structures typically lack directionality. For example, differently from microwave antenna systems, most optical emitters (e.g., excited atoms/molecules and simple nanoantennas) exhibit quasi-isotropic dipolar radiation patterns with low directivity. Furthermore, surface waves supported by conventional material substrates do not usually have a preferential direction of propagation, and their wavefront tends to spread as it propagates along the surface, unless the surface or the excitation is properly engineered and structured. In this article, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of realizing unidirectional and diffractionless surface plasmon polariton modes on a nonreciprocal platform, namely, a gyrotropic magnetized plasma. Based on a rigorous Green’s function approach, we provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis of all the available physical mechanisms that may bestow the system with directionality, both in the sense of one-way excitation of surface waves and in the sense of directive diffractionless propagation along the surface. The considered mechanisms include (i) the effect of strong and weak forms of nonreciprocity, (ii) the elliptic-like or hyperbolic-like topology of the modal dispersion surfaces, and (iii) the source polarization state, with the associated possibility of chiral surface-wave excitation governed by angular-momentum matching. We find that three-dimensional gyrotropic plasmonic platforms support a previously unnoticed wave-propagation regime that exhibit several of these physical mechanisms simultaneously, allowing us to theoretically demonstrate unidirectional surface plasmon polariton modes that propagate as a single ultranarrow diffractionless beam. We also assess the impact of dissipation and nonlocal effects. Our theoretical findings may enable a new generation of plasmonic structures and devices with highly directional response.

Micro-nanoparticle systems have wide applications in thermal science and technology. In dense particulate system, the particle separation distance may be less than the characteristic thermal wavelength and near field effect will be significant and become a key factor to influence thermal radiation transfer in the system. In this study, radiative heat transfer (RHT) between two metallic nanoparticles clusters are explored using many-body radiative heat transfer theory implemented with the coupled electric and magnetic dipole (CEMD) approach, which effectively takes into account the contribution of magnetic polarization of metallic nanoparticles on heat exchange. As the focus, the effects of magnetic polarization and many-body interaction (MBI) on RHT were analyzed. The effects of fractal dimension and relative orientation of the clusters were also analyzed. Results show that the contribution of magnetically polarized eddy-current Joule dissipation dominates the RHT between Ag nanoparticle clusters. If only electric polarization (EP approach) is considered, the heat conductance will be underestimated as compared with the CEMD approach in both near field and far field regime. The effect of MBI on the RHT between Ag nanoparticle clusters is unobvious at room temperature, which is quite different from the SiC nanoparticle clusters. For the latter, MBI tends to suppress RHT significantly. The relative orientation has remarkable effect on radiative heat flux for clusters with lacy structure when the separation distance is in the near field. While for the separation distance in far field, both the relative orientation and the fractal dimension has a weak influence on radiative heat flux. We present a semi-analytical model of the resonance phenomena occurring in a hybrid system made of a 1D array of periodic subwavelength slits deposited on an insulator/graphene layer. We show that the spectral response of this hybrid system can be fully explained by a simple semi-analytical model based on a weak and strong couplings between two elementary sub-systems. The first elementary sub-system consists of a 1D array of periodic subwavelength slits viewed as a homogeneous medium. In this medium lives a metal-insulator-metal lattice mode interacting with surface and cavity plasmon modes. A weak coupling with surface plasmon modes on both faces of the perforated metal film leads to a broadband spectrum while a strong coupling between this first sub-system and a second one made of a graphene-insulator-metal gap leads to a narrow band spectrum. Black phosphorus (BP), as a two-dimensional material, has exhibited unique optoelectronic properties due to its anisotropic plasmons. In the present work, we theoretically propose a radiative thermal switch (RTS) composed of BP gratings in the context of near-field radiative heat transfer. The simply mechanical rotation between the gratings enables considerable modulation of radiative heat flux, especially when combined with the use of non-identical parameters, i.e., filling factors and electron densities of BP. Among all the cases including asymmetric BP gratings, symmetric BP gratings, and BP films, we find that the asymmetric BP gratings possess the most excellent switching performance. The optimized switching factors can be as high as 90% with the vacuum separation d=50 nm and higher than 70% even in the far-field regime d=1 µm. The high-performance switching is basically attributed to the rotatable-tunable anisotropic BP plasmons between the asymmetric gratings. Moreover, due to the twisting principle, the RTS can work at a wide range of temperature, which has great advantage over the phase change materials-based RTS. The proposed switching scheme has great significance for the applications in optoelectronic devices and thermal circuits.

International audience; The study of open quantum systems often relies on approximate master equations derived under the assumptions of weak coupling to the environment. However when the system is made of several interacting subsystems such a derivation is in many cases very hard. An alternative method, employed especially in the modeling of transport in mesoscopic systems, consists in using local master equations (LMEs) containing Lindblad operators acting locally only on the corresponding subsystem. It has been shown that this approach however generates inconsistencies with the laws of thermodynamics. In this paper we demonstrate that using a microscopic model of LMEs based on repeated collisions all thermodynamic inconsistencies can be resolved by correctly taking into account the breaking of global detailed balance related to the work cost of maintaining the collisions. We provide examples based on a chain of quantum harmonic oscillators whose ends are connected to thermal reservoirs at different temperatures. We prove that this system behaves precisely as a quantum heat engine or refrigerator, with properties that are fully consistent with basic thermodynamics.

We study the radiative heat transfer between multilayer structures made by a periodic repetition of a graphene sheet and a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slab. Surface plasmons in a monolayer graphene can couple with a hyperbolic phonon polaritons in a single hBN film to form hybrid polaritons that can assist photon tunneling. For periodic multilayer graphene/hBN structures, the stacked metallic/dielectric array can give rise to a further effective hyperbolic behavior, in addition to the intrinsic natural hyperbolic behavior of hBN. The effective hyperbolicity can enable more hyperbolic polaritons that enhance the photon tunneling and hence the near-field heat transfer. However, the hybrid polaritons on the surface, i.e. surface plasmon-phonon polaritons, dominate the near-field heat transfer between multilayer structures when the topmost layer is graphene. The effective hyperbolic regions can be well predicted by the effective medium theory (EMT), thought EMT fails to capture the hybrid surface polaritons and results in a heat transfer rate much lower compared to the exact calculation. The chemical potential of the graphene sheets can be tuned through electrical gating and results in an additional modulation of the heat transfer. We found that the near-field heat transfer between multilayer structure does not increase monotonously with the number of layer in the stack, which provides a way to control the heat transfer rate by the number of graphene layers in the multilayer structure. The results may benefit the applications of near-field energy harvesting and radiative cooling based on hybrid polaritons in two-dimensional materials., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

International audience; We investigate the quantum recoil force acting on an excited atom close to the surface of a nonreciprocal photonic topological insulator (PTI). The main atomic emission channel is the unidirectional surface plasmon propagating at the PTI-vacuum interface, and we show that it enables a spontaneous lateral recoil force that scales at short distances as 1/d^4, where d is the atom-PTI separation. Remarkably, the sign of the recoil force is polarization and orientation independent, and it occurs in a translation-invariant homogeneous system in thermal equilibrium. Surprisingly, the recoil force persists for very small values of the gyration pseudovector, which, for a biased plasma, corresponds to very low cyclotron frequencies. The ultrastrong recoil force is rooted in the quasihyperbolic dispersion of the surface plasmons. We consider both an initially excited atom and a continuous pump scenario, the latter giving rise to a steady lateral force whose direction can be changed at will by simply varying the orientation of the biasing magnetic field. Our predictions may be tested in experiments with cold Rydberg atoms and superconducting qubits.

Photonic topological insulator plates violate Lorentz reciprocity which leads to a directionality of surface-guided modes. This in-plane directionality can be imprinted via an applied magnetic field. On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in nonreciprocal media, we show that two photonic topological insulator surfaces are subject to a tuneable, magnetic-field dependent Casimir torque. Due to the directionality, this torque exhibits a unique $2\pi$ periodicity, in contradistinction to the Casimir torques encountered for reciprocal uniaxial birefringent media or corrugated surfaces which are $\pi$-periodic. Remarkably, the torque direction and strength can be externally driven in situ by simply applying a magnetic field on the system, and we show that this can be exploited to induce a control the rotation of small objects. International audience; We investigate the quantum optical torque on an atom interacting with an inhomogeneous electromagnetic environment described by the most general linear constitutive relations. The atom is modeled as a two-level system prepared in an arbitrary initial energy state. Using the Heisenberg equation of motion (HEM) and under the Markov approximation, we show that the optical torque has a resonant and nonresonant part, associated, respectively, with a spontaneous-emission process and Casimir-type interactions with the quantum vacuum, which can both be written explicitly in terms of the system Green function. Our formulation is valid for any three-dimensional inhomogeneous, dissipative, dispersive, nonreciprocal, and bianisotropic structure. We apply this general theory to a scenario in which the atom interacts with a material characterized by strong nonreciprocity and modal unidirectionality. In this case, the main decay channel of the atom energy is represented by the unidirectional surface waves launched at the nonreciprocal material-vacuum interface. To provide relevant physical insight into the role of these unidirectional surface waves in the emergence of nontrivial optical torque, we derive closed-form expressions for the induced torque under the quasistatic approximation. Finally, we investigate the equilibrium states of the atom polarization, along which the atom spontaneously tends to align due to the action of the torque. Our theoretical predictions may be experimentally tested with cold Rydberg atoms and superconducting qubits near a nonreciprocal material. We believe that our general theory may find broad application in the context of nanomechanical and biomechanical systems.

International audience; We theoretically study the Casimir-Polder force on an atom in an arbitrary initial state in a rather general electromagnetic environment wherein the materials may have a nonreciprocal bianisotropic dispersive response. It is shown that under the Markov approximation the force has resonant and nonresonant contributions. We obtain explicit expressions for the optical force both in terms of the system Green function and of the electromagnetic modes. We apply the theory to the particular case wherein a two-level system interacts with a topological gyrotropic material, showing that the nonreciprocity enables exotic light-matter interactions and the opportunity to sculpt and tune the Casimir-Polder forces on the nanoscale. With a quasistatic approximation, we obtain a simple analytical expression for the optical force and unveil the crucial role of surface plasmons in fluctuation-induced forces. Finally, we derive the Green function for a gyrotropic material half-space in terms of a Sommerfeld integral.

International audience; We investigate both entanglement and energy transport properties for two-level systems in the vicinity of a photonic topological insulator (PTI) interface, which supports a nonreciprocal (unidirectional), scattering-immune and topologically-protected surface plasmon polariton in the bandgap of the bulk material. Moreover, we demonstrate that despite the presence of considerable imperfections at the interface of the PTI, the efficiency of the SPP-assisted energy transport is almost unaffected by discontinuities. We also show that the SPP properties allow energy transport over considerably much larger distances then in the reciprocal case, and we point out a particularly simple way to tune the transport. Finally, we analyze the specific case of a two-emitter-chain and unveil the origin of the efficiency amplification. The efficiency amplification and the practical advantages highlighted in this work might be particularly useful in the development of new devices intended to manage energy at the atomic scale, e.g. in quantum technologies.

International audience; We will discuss recent results on the theoretical and experimental investigations on solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover. On the theory side, by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter, it has been shown that a dark soliton at unitarity posses a large density contrast and fermionic bound states. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter. By solving the time dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, also the decay and collisions of dark solitons has been investigated. Recently, a cascade of Solitonic Excitations in a Superfluid Fermi gas has been experimentally observed.

International audience; We investigate the transport of energy in a linear chain of two-level quantum emitters ("atoms")weakly coupled to a blackbody radiation bath [1]. We show that, simply by displacing one ormore atoms from their regular-chain positions, the efficiency of the energy transport can beconsiderably amplified of at least one order of magnitude. Besides, in configurations providingan efficiency greater than 100% , the distance between the two last atoms of the chain canbe up to 20 times larger than the one in the regular chain, thus achieving a much longer-rangeenergy transport. By performing both a stationary and time-dependent analysis, we ascribethis effect to an elementary block of three atoms, playing the role of excitation injector fromthe blackbody bath to the extraction site. International audience; Radiative heat transfer between nanostructured objects is a new prolific research line, which open to new heat transfer modulation and amplification possibilities. We will consider the heat transfer between micro/nano-gratings. In particular, we calculate the radiative heat transfer between two identical metallic one-dimensional lamellar gratings [1]. To this aim we present and exploit a modification to the widely-used Fourier modal method, known as adaptive spatial resolution, based on a stretch of the coordinate associated to the periodicity of the grating. We first show that this technique dramatically improves the rate of convergence when calculating the heat flux, allowing to explore smaller separations. We then present a study of heat flux as a function of the grating height, highlighting a remarkable amplification of the exchanged energy, ascribed to the appearance of spoof-plasmon modes, whose behavior is also spectrally investigated. Differently from previous works, our method allows us to explore a range of grating heights extending over several orders of magnitude. By comparing our results to recent studies we find a consistent quantitative disagreement with some previously obtained results going up to 50%. In some cases, this disagreement is explained in terms of an incorrect connection between the reflection operators of the two gratings.

International audience; We show that the energy-transport efficiency in a chain of two-level emitters can be drastically enhanced by the presence of a photonic topological insulator (PTI). This is obtained by exploiting the peculiar properties of its nonreciprocal surface plasmon polariton (SPP), which is unidirectional, and immune to backscattering, and propagates in the bulk band gap. This amplification of transport efficiency can be as much as 2 orders of magnitude with respect to reciprocal SPPs. Moreover, we demonstrate that despite the presence of considerable imperfections at the interface of the PTI, the efficiency of the SPP-assisted energy transport is almost unaffected by discontinuities. We also show that the SPP properties allow energy transport over considerably much larger distances than in the reciprocal case, and we point out aparticularly simple way to tune the transport. Finally, we analyze the specific case of a two-emitter chain and unveil the origin of the efficiency amplification. The efficiency amplification and the practical advantages highlighted in this work might be particularly useful in the development of new devices intended to manage energy at the atomic scale.

The radiative heat transfer between two dielectrics can be strongly enhanced in the near field in the presence of surface phonon-polariton resonances. Nevertheless, the spectral mismatch between the surface modes supported by two dissimilar materials is responsible for a dramatic reduction of the radiative heat flux they exchange. In the present paper we study how the presence of a graphene sheet, deposited on the material supporting the surface wave of lowest frequency, allows to widely tune the radiative heat transfer, producing an amplification factor going up to one order of magnitude. By analyzing the Landauer energy transmission coefficients we demonstrate that this amplification results from the interplay between the delocalized plasmon supported by graphene and the surface polaritons of the two dielectrics. We finally show that the effect we highlight is robust with respect to the frequency mismatch, paving the way to an active tuning and amplification of near-field radiative heat transfer in different configurations., 8 pages, 8 figures

A general theory of photon-mediated energy and momentum transfer in N-body planar systems out of thermal equilibrium is introduced. It is based on the combination of the scattering theory and the fluctuational-electrodynamics approach in many-body systems. By making a Landauer-like formulation of the heat transfer problem, explicit formulas for the energy transmission coefficients between two distinct slabs as well as the self-coupling coefficients are derived and expressed in terms of the reflection and transmission coefficients of the single bodies. We also show how to calculate local equilibrium temperatures in such systems. An analogous formulation is introduced to quantify momentum transfer coefficients describing Casimir-Lifshitz forces out of thermal equilibrium. Forces at thermal equilibrium are readily obtained as a particular case. As an illustration of this general theoretical framework, we show on three-body systems how the presence of a fourth slab can impact equilibrium temperatures in heat-transfer problems and equilibrium positions resulting from the forces acting on the system., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

International audience; We study the coupling between surface plasmons of a doped graphene sheet and those of a metal-like/dielectric/ metal-like plasmonic waveguide. In order to allow such a coupling, the metal-like media are chosen to be doped semiconductors with plasma energies close to the Fermi level of the doped graphene. We derive and compute numerically the full dispersion relation and study in detail the characteristics of the hybrid modes emerging from strong coupling.

We show that graphene-dielectric multilayers give rise to an unusual tunability of the Casimir-Lifshitz forces, and allow to easily realize completely different regimes within the same structure. Concerning thermal effects, graphene-dielectric multilayers take advantage from the anomalous features predicted for isolated suspended graphene sheets, even though they are considerably affected by the presence of the dielectric substrate. They can also archive the anomalous non-monotonic thermal metallic behavior by increasing the graphene sheets density and their Fermi energy. In addition to a strong thermal modulation occurring at short separations, in a region where the force is orders of magnitude larger than the one occurring at large distances, the force can be also adjusted by varying the number of graphene layers as well as their Fermi energy levels, allowing for relevant force amplifications which can be tuned, very rapidly and in-situ, by simply applying an electric potential. In this letter, we have demonstrated the possibility to efficiently relay the radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles by opening a smooth channel for heat transfer. By coating the nanoparticles with a silica shell and modifying the substrate with multilayered graphene sheets respectively, the localized phonon polaritons excited near the nanoparticles can couple with the multiple surface plasmon polaritons near the substrate to realize the heat relay in the long distance. The heat transfer can be enhanced by more than six orders of magnitude and the relay distance can be as high as 35 times in the far-field regime. The work may provide a way to realize the energy modulation or thermal communications especially in long distance., 10 pages, 4 figures

Based on the theory of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we generalize the expression of the Casimir force for nonreciprocal media. The essential ingredient of this result is the Green's tensor between two nonreciprocal semi-infinite slabs including a reflexion matrix with four coefficients that mixes optical polarizations. This Green's tensor does not obey Lorentz's reciprocity and thus violates time-reversal symmetry. The general result for the Casimir force is analyzed in the retarded and nonretarded limits, concentrating on the influences arising from reflections with or without change of polarization. In a second step we apply our general result to a photonic topological insulator whose nonreciprocity stems from an anisotropic permittivity tensor, namely InSb. We show that there is a regime for the distance between the slabs where the magnitude of the Casimir force is tunable by an external magnetic field. Furthermore the strength of this tuning depends on the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the slab surfaces., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Heat flux exchanged between two hot bodies at subwavelength separation distances can exceed the limit predicted by the blackbody theory. However this super-Planckian transfer is restricted to these separation distances. Here we demonstrate the possible existence of a super-Planckian transfer at arbitrary large separation distances if the interacting bodies are connected in near-field with weakly dissipating hyperbolic waveguides. This result opens the way to long distance transport of near-field thermal energy., 10 pages, 11 figures

We show that the electromagnetic forces generated by the excitations of a mode in graphene-based optomechanical systems are highly tunable by varying the graphene chemical potential, and orders of magnitude stronger than usual non-graphene-based devices, in both attractive and repulsive regimes. We analyze coupled waveguides made of two parallel graphene sheets, either suspended or supported by dielectric slabs, and study the interplay between the light-induced force and the Casimir-Lifshitz interaction. These findings pave the way to advanced possibilities of control and fast modulation for optomechanical devices and sensors at the nano- and micro-scales., 13 pages, 8 figures
