The contemporary performative scene is defined by the interaction of the means of artistic expression, which determines a permanent renewal of the scenic language. This article discusses the multiple stage practices that animate in the play the theater and music, in their complementarity or dynamic confrontation. These interactions are presented here from the perspective of the specific musical work of the artist Jean-Jacques Lemêtre, who facilitated a voice and movement rhythm workshop at the Faculty of Theater and Film of the Babeș-Bolyai University, March 2023. Unique figure in the theatrical musical landscape, he has been the musician, composer, luthier, and interpreter of the sound universe of the Théâtre du Soleil company's performances for more than forty years. This work aims to demonstrate that music for theater is a special genre born through the process of organic integration of the theatricality of the stage, by assuming the risk of being contaminated by the impurity generated by the actors' bodies that emit their own sound universe. The music for theater is enriched and energized by these experiences born from the osmosis of sound-enhanced image into organic and fruitful connections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyses the varied functions and ways of application of the clown and circus motifs in the more than 54-year-long history of the Théâtre du Soleil. Clowns have passed into the theatre of Ariane Mnouchkine from the “sources” of her theatre inspiration: from Oriental forms, commedia dell’arte, and fair spectacles, from the pedagogic practice of Jacques Lecoq as well as from the space of the abandoned Montmartre (former Médano) circus, where the Thèâtre du Soleil, homeless back then, set the action of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1968). In later productions, clowns reappeared as constitutive elements of the world represented on stage in two guises: as jesters in glimpses of the revolutionary cabaret in Mephisto (1979) and as a kind of buffer introducing new qualities of experience in the instalments of the Shakespearean cycle. In each instance, the personages of clowns in performances of the Théâtre du Soleil broaden the dimensions of the world represented on stage; revealing its complexity and opacity, they become signs of pure theatricality and expose to view numerous paradoxes that can be seen at the individual, social, and transcendent level.

FEMINISM , *FEMINISTS , *FEMINIST theory , *GENDER identity , *FEMININITY - Abstract
As one of the most influential feminist theorists in Western academic circles, Hélène Cixous is often associated with écriture feminine (feminine writing), a term she coined in 1977, and with a fluid, poetic style both in her essays and in her fiction. This article investigates how Hélène Cixous uses the concept of the ‘feminine’ in her plays as a container for heterogeneity, liminality and difference, mobilizing it to animate feminist strategies that interrupt male, white and/or hegemonic forms of subjectivity. If for Cixous the practice of feminine writing is fundamentally characterized by the desire to create a mode of expression in which (gendered, embodied, racial) difference and otherness would retain their alterity, in dramatic writing she found an especially conducive medium for the realization of that desire. This article examines Cixous’s anti-realist postdramatic works, from her first produced play Portrait of Dora (1976) to her works for Ariane Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil, in the context of a feminist aesthetics of estrangement, and considers how her plays enact feminist theory’s own movement away from the psychoanalytical discourses of the 1970s and 1980s to postcolonial and materialist critiques. The article employs a range of intersectional critical methodologies for situating Cixous’s dramatic writing within a broader feminist praxis, using the work of feminist performance scholars like Elin Diamond, Rebecca Schneider and Jill Dolan to consider the liminal Other as a precarious feminine figure that Cixous re-inscribes into discourse. Feminine writing, the progressive movement away from realism towards postdramatic theatre, and Cixous’s artistic collaboration with Mnouchkine are each considered as feminist strategies towards a rendition of the subject that can reiterate its otherness on stage. The central argument is that it is the enactment of these strategies in live performance that makes Hélène Cixous’s concept of femininity as liminal difference so relevant for feminist politics today. This paper seeks to explore certain prescriptive theorisations of the Nāṭyaśāstra and link them, in a comparative vein, with the often radical directorial approaches and experiments in post-WW2 European dramaturgical practice, especially as seen in the work of the eminent French metteur en scène, Ariane Mnouchkine (1939-), who founded the avant-garde stage ensemble Théâtre du Soleil in 1964, in Paris. Mnouchkine's L'Indiade ou L'Inde de leurs Rêves (1987-1988), based on the learning experiences which Hélène Cixous--who wrote the play for and with her--and she had had in India during their stay and travels there, was an almost ground-breaking exploration of Indic motifs and stagement-configurations. The play will be viewed here from the perspective of 'total theatre', as also envisaged in the Nāṭyaśāstra. Finally, this paper will also seek to engage with theatrical and ritual boundaries in Mnouchkine's work by looking at the reception of Indic forms of ritual-theatre in L'Indiade. This roundtable discussion with Hélène Cixous took place at St John's College, Cambridge, on 20 September 2014 as part of the Cambridge ‘Conference for a Poetics of Critical Political Theatre in Europe’. It was subsequently transcribed and prepared for publication by Joseph Long and Eva Urban to pay homage to the acclaimed critical theorist, novelist, and dramatist Hélène Cixous on her eightieth birthday on 5 June 2017, and to celebrate her important contribution in particular to political European theatre. The conversation centres on the recurring themes of her major plays, many of which were written in creative collaboration with Ariane Mnouchkine and the Théâtre du Soleil, where they were performed. Her epic modern tragedies are deeply concerned with ethics, politics, social criticism, and ideas of utopian social projects and their tragic failures. Here Cixous, with Maria Shevtsova, Joseph Long, Eric Prenowitz, Marta Segarra, and Eva Urban highlight both the passionate political commitment of her plays and their innovative textual and poetic forms within the wider context of Cixous's writings for the theatre.1 The conversation followed a keynote address by NTQ co-editor Maria Shevtsova, attended by Hélène Cixous, prior to the roundtable discussion, and published as ‘Political Theatre in Europe: East to West, 2007–2014’, in New Theatre Quarterly, XXXII, No. 2 (May 2016). Based on the author’s assistantship experience with Théâtre du Soleil during the rehearsal process of Les Atrides in 1990, this study offers an insight into the aesthetics and working strategy of the French theatre director Ariane Mnouchkine. The study focuses on the relationship of the Théâtre du Soleil to the oriental theatre sources, seeking to prove that it cannot be reduced to quotations of oriental elements in Mnouchkine’s works. In fact, the lessons from the various oriental forms are integrated into her artistic thought to the point that is no more possible to isolate the “oriental details” as they participate with all the rest on the creation of the exact stage metaphor.

ATROCITIES , *RETRIBUTION , *FORGIVENESS - Abstract
In the article, I examine Hélène Cixous's play La Ville parjure ou le Réveil des Erinyes ( The Perjured City) as a political contribution to the debate over memory and justice. The focus is on the question of how the telling of a story of atrocities may be therapeutic to both the victim and to society. I stress Cixous's alternative way of addressing justice: through forgiveness instead of criminal prosecution or other forms of retribution or reconciliation. Referring to Jacques Derrida's work, the main argument revolves around the question of whether forgiveness for unspeakable crimes should be unconditional or conditional. Instead of seeing Cixous's play as an unequivocal stance on restorative justice in general, and on conditional forgiveness in particular, I stress that the main protagonist, the Mother, is not willing to forgive the crime itself because of its unforgivable nature. Taking Kuddiyattam and Théâtre Du Soleil as theatrical strands that create scenic expedients (creative process and theater performance) based on the relationship between actress/actor and musician, we present some elements of this relationship that carries the idea of ‘Music of the Theater’ (a term created by Jean-Jacques Lemêtre). Listening is one of the main aspects, usually linked to an improvisational approach present both in the creation process and in the presentation itself, where the play between the actress/actor and the musician focuses on the creation of characters, scenes, and in establishing the atmosphere of the performance., Tomando o Kuddiyattam e o Théâtre Du Soleil como vertentes teatrais que criam expedientes cênicos (processo criativo e apresentações) pautados na relação entre atriz/ator e musicista/músico, apresentamos alguns elementos desta relação que carregam a ideia de ‘Música do Teatro’ (termo criado por Jean-Jacques Lemêtre).

Le Theatre du Soleil traces the company's history from a group of young, barely trained actors, directors and designers struggling to match their political commitment to a creative strategy, to their grappling with the concerns of migration, separation and exile in the early decades of the 21st century. Beatrice Picon-Vallin recounts how, in the fifty years since their founding, Theatre du Soleil have established themselves as one of the foremost names in modern theatre. Ariane Mnouchkine and her collaborators have developed a unique and ever-evolving style that combines a piercing richness of shape, colour, and texture with precision choreography, innovative musical accompaniment, and multi-layered, metaphorical dreamscapes. This rich, storied history is illustrated by a wealth of spectacular rehearsal and production photos from the company's own archive and interviews with dozens of past and present members, including Mnouchkine herself.Judith G. Miller's timely translation of the first comprehensive history and analysis of a remarkable, award-winning company is a compelling read for both students and teachers of Drama and Theatre Studies.

This interview has been taken at the Theatre du Soleil, on the 6
th of April 2011, in the very laboratory of master Jean Jacques Lemêtre, the famous theatre music composer and more than 30 year close collaborator of Ariane Mnouchkine. Talking about the paths leading to creation in this enigmatic field of theatre music, Jean-Jacques Lemêtre gives us a few keys to the understanding of the art of acting and listening, to the access to what he and Ariane Mnouchkine consider to be the most important values for a real actor: to be sincere, truthful and to keep the right balance in acting on scene but also in the Theatre of Life. THEATER & society , *EMIGRATION & immigration in art - Abstract
In 2003, the Paris-based theatre company Theatre du Soleil launched Le Dernier Caravanserail: Odyssees, a collaborative creation based on stories that company members had collected from refugees at the Sangatte refugee camp outside Calais, among other locations. Scenes of moral reasoning dotted the six-hour spectacle, calling to mind the international media frenzy that followed the short lifetime (1999-2003) of the camp: if Sangatte was the ultimate embodiment of French compassion toward those in need, why did many resist confinement and hope to escape? By way of a closer look at the Sangatte scenes in Caravanserail, this paper asks several questions: How did the company engage the recent turn toward 'humanitarian' effort in French immigration policy in its depiction of the refugee experience? What were the structures of care and compassion with which the performance itself approached its subjects? And finally, how was performance practice, with its sensitivity to questions of affect and corporeality, taken to complicate the forms that human care can take? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Théâtre du Soleil's latest production, Le Dernier Caravansérail (The Last Caravanserai), staged the stories and experiences of immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers from around the world. In this article, William McEvoy argues that the company was motivated both by a political agenda to make migrants more visible and a concern to investigate the ethical implications of its own creative processes. This led to a potential conflict between representing migrants directly on stage and a performance that reflected the company's worries about turning migrants' traumatic narratives into theatre and spectacle. Focusing on the concept of balance in the production, the article shows how Théâtre du Soleil presented the ethical negotiations between creative self and represented other through exploring the links between text and performance, writing and the body, and manipulation and resistance. William McEvoy is a lecturer in the English Department the University of Sussex, specializing in contemporary theatre and performance. He has published work on Peter Brook and Ariane Mnouchkine, and his current research deals with the shifting role of the text in experimental and physical theatre. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A performance of Tibetan music and dance by the nuns of Khachoe Ghakyil Ling nunnery at the American Museum of Natural History invites a comparison between this event and a theatrical production about Tibet by the French theatre company Theatre du Soleil. Although the political plight of the Tibetan people shapes the daily lives of the nuns, it is not overtly addressed in their performance, which sets the viewer up as a removed observer of Tibetan culture. The Theatre du Soleil's production, by contrast, foregrounds the political issues and involves the audience on every level in a cultural exchange that is, nonetheless, fictional. The comparison addresses questions of cultural authenticity, the ability of performance to bring the spectator to political engagement, and the relative contributions of cultural performance on the one hand and theatre on the other. Claudia Orenstein is assistant professor of theatre at Hunter College, CUNY. She received her Ph.D. in directing and criticism from Stanford University and has taught at Barnard College and Pomona College. Her current research focuses on intercultural issues in theatre East and West and on political theatre in the United States and Asia. Her book Festive Revolution: The Politics of Popular Theatre and the San Francisco Mime Troupe was published by the University Press of Mississippi. She also works as an actor and director. The play The Terrible but Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia by Hélène Cixous, and directed by Ariane Mnouchkine at the Théâtre du Soleil in 1987, deals with the systemic failure of a political culture – transcending spatial and temporal parameters – and its genocidal consequences in national and international contexts, as well as individual and collective resistance. The article aims to study the political and geopolitical narrative as well as Cixous’ interpretation of history, with references to the civil war in Cambodia, the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Our approach to the play, which marks the beginning of the collaboration between the director Ariane Mnouchkine and Hélène Cixous, is that of an exploration and contextualization of its political and historical content to show how, in the words of Cixous, it « pollinates » its literary representation. We will analyze the interaction between discourses on traditionalism and modernization, imperialism and resistance, territoriality and exile. This also includes a study of the meaning of space as a « place of memory », since pay particular attention will be paid to the action of the play and the struggles of power, constantly changing places – whether these are interior or transnational – through Phnom Penh, Beijing, Washington, Paris and Moscow.

Whereas Peter Brook’s theatre company, the International Centre for Theatre Research, founded in 1971 in Paris, displays its “international” character in its title, the Théâtre du Soleil, created in 1964 and installed in 1970 at the Cartoucherie de Vincennes, welcomed foreigners little by little. Their presence was neither a statement of principle nor a manifesto, but a reality. Accents were worked on, softened or kept as long as they could be understood. These theatre companies with their different approaches were the two major venues where, during this period, French theatrical language involved a mix, making its words sing out to the extent where people heard them differently, more strongly, as coming from elsewhere. This issue is essential and merits an in-depth study. The present article is a first approach to the history, already quite lengthy, of the inclusion of accents, regional or non-native, into the original theatrical speech of the Théâtre du Soleil, a history further enriched by the inclusion of languages and their translations, which intersects with the former without encompassing it. This approach concerns the actors, the teams that support them in all needed positions and the spectators at the Cartoucherie.
