Hugo Bondy (1900–1985), a fairly unknown Austrian scientist working in academia in the twentieth century made important contributions to the development of double-focusing sector field mass spectrometers. This article describes his life and scientific contributions in a fascinating biography meriting his achievements in the development and construction of new mass spectrometers. The article divides into three sections according to Bondy’s biography. In the first section, his education, career in academia, and research in mass spectrometry are displayed. The second section reconstructs his expulsion from the university, his persecution and resistance in the Nazi era, and his failed attempt to be reinstated at his position as a scientist. In the third and last section, Bondy’s career in the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education is depicted by focusing on his youth work, a controversy of his political affiliations, and his accomplishments and character in the civil service. Bondy’s life is taken as an example to uncover the process of exclusion in science with all its consequences. But also, the ethical aspects of science for education and the application of a scientific attitude to society are revealed by his actions. Graphical abstract

Seven plant certified reference materials (NIST SRM1515 Apple Leaves, NIST SRM1547 Peach Leaves, BCR-129 Hay Powder, BCR-670 Aquatic Plant, GBW07603 Bush Twigs and Leaves, GBW10015 Spinach Leaves and NCS ZC73036a Green Tea) were analysed for their mass fractions of 48 elements by inductively coupled plasma tandem-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS): Li, Be, Na, Mg, Al, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Nb, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sb, Te, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Ta, Tl, Pb, Bi, Th, U. Special focus was put on the determination of technology-critical elements (TCEs), to which, e.g. Li, Be, Ga, Ge, Nb, Sb, Ta, Tl, Bi, and the rare-earth elements (REEs, lanthanides and Y) are counted. Closed-vessel microwave digestion was performed using HNO3, H2O2 and HBF4. The average bias for certified values is − 1% ± 13% (SD). Limits of detection (xL) in the measured solutions lie between 13 fg g−1 (Tb) and 52 ng g−1 (Ca). This article seeks to provide an optimised measurement procedure for the determination of element mass fractions of emerging importance in environmental samples, which are challenging to analyse with more traditional techniques such as single-quad ICP-MS. In addition, it aims to improve the characterisation of commonly used plant reference materials by providing mass fraction data for rarely studied elements. Graphical abstract

Gas cell interactions of 73 elements with nitrous oxide (N2O) have been evaluated using inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS). Recommendations for the reduction of interferences are provided.

The table of standard atomic weights (TSAW) provides of the numbers included in all reprints of the periodic tables of the elements, in all textbooks in schools, high schools and universities, found on the internet, and numerous databases [1]. Whenever one needs to relate masses of an element to molar quantities, standard atomic weights come into the play. They are of fundamental importance in science, education, technology, industries, trade and commerce. It is therefore not surprising that the determination of atomic weights has a central role in chemistry. Also, it is not surprising that it needs a whole commission of experts to set-up such table with highest confidence even though at first sight it seems to be a simple compilation of numbers. In inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, the most abundant Ca isotope (40Ca) suffers from isobaric interference with argon, hindering the potential for low detection limits of Ca. A powerful approach is to remove the interference by using a reaction gas in a reaction cell. Ammonia (NH3) has proven to be an effective reaction gas by process of a charge transfer reaction. However, NH3 is highly corrosive and toxic and cannot remove isobaric 40 K. Therefore, this work proposes the use of nitrous oxide (N2O) to mass shift the target analyte 40Ca to 40Ca16O+ as a non-corrosive and non-toxic alternative. Instrument performance testing demonstrated that N2O was capable of reaching equivalent detection limits (0.015 ng g−1) and background equivalence concentrations (0.041 ng g−1) to that of NH3 and limited by the blank only. Further investigation of matrix interferences with synthetic standards highlighted that the N2O approach supports the separation of potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg)–based interferences at tested concentrations of more than 600 times and almost 800 times higher than Ca respectively, whereas NH3 was found to only support the removal of Mg. This work highlights a clear advantage of N2O for low-level Ca determinations with high matrix loads, as well as compatibility with other instrumentation sensitive to corrosion that supports reaction cell technology. The application of Ca isotopic analysis in biomedical studies has great potential to identify changes in Ca metabolism and bone metabolism. Reliable measurement of Ca isotope-amount ratios is challenging considering limited Ca amounts and significant procedural blank levels. In this study, Ca purification was performed using the DGA Resin, optimized for low procedural blanks and separation of Ca from matrix elements and isobaric interferences (Na, Mg, K, Ti, Fe, Ba), while maintaining quasi-quantitative recoveries which are sufficient since a 42Ca–48Ca double-spike (DS) was applied. Ca isotopic analysis was performed using multicollector thermal ionization mass spectrometry (MC TIMS). The obtained procedural Ca blank of ≤10 ng enables processing of limited Ca amounts down to 670 ng. Data reduction of the measured Ca isotope-amount ratios was performed using an in-house developed software solving the DS algorithm. Data quality was improved by extension of equilibration time of the sample-DS mixture and implementation of a normalization strategy for raw isotopic data. The reported δ(44Ca/40Ca)NIST SRM 915a of NIST SRM 915a processed as a sample was found to be 0.01 ‰ ± 0.08 ‰ (2 SD, n = 15). Ca isotope-amount ratios of the reference material NIST SRM 1400 (bone ash), NIST SRM 1486 (bone meal), GBW07601 (human hair), and IAPSO (seawater) were in good agreement within uncertainty with literature data. Novel data on additional reference materials for biological tissues (hair) is presented, which might indicate a potential fractionation of Ca incorporated into hair tissue when compared to the blood pool.

Ca isotopes have gained increasing interest as a diagnostic tool for bone diseases due to the variations in abundances as a consequence of changes in bone-mineral balance. Optimized Ca/matrix separation prior to analysis is a prerequisite for reliable isotope ratio measurements in complex biological matrices such as blood, serum, or urine. The online analysis of analyte/matrix separation by ICP-MS enables direct assessment of elution profiles supporting the optimization process. The integration of transient signals and signal suppression challenge the quantification and interpretation of the elution profiles. Mn and Co remain unretained by the DGA Resin (TrisKem International) from nitric acid. Hence, in the present study, these elements were investigated for their application as standards to monitor signal suppression. Successful analyte quantification was accomplished using a dynamic correction strategy applying a linear gradient of a suppression factor based on Mn and Co intensities. Two different strands of hair taken from Beethoven's head after his death were examined for heavy metals using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser ablation-ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy). The results revealed the presence of small lead particles on the surface of Beethoven's hairs and fluctuating lead levels in hair medulla along the length of the hair due to alternating lead exposure, with an average lead exposure of 100 times the normal value. The time-line attached to the peaks of these fluctuating values correlate with the pneumonia treatment and the paracenteses performed, including the subsequent treatment of the procedure wounds. While the administration of lead-containing drugs and treatments had been proven to resolve the pneumonia, it had simultaneously caused massive liver failure, accelerated by pre-existing cirrhosis. The question as to whether Beethoven's death was a case of malpractice can only be answered from a forensic point of view ex ante, since the state of the medical knowledge of the time has to be taken into account.Zwei verschiedene Haarsträhnen, die postmortal vom Kopf Beethovens entnommen worden waren, wurden mittels REM (Rasterelektronenmikroskop) und Laserablation-ICP-MS („inductively coupled plasma–mass spectroscopy“) auf Schwermetalle untersucht. Während die Anwendung bleihaltiger Medikamente und Behandlungen die Pneumonie nachweislich zum Abklingen brachte, bewirkte sie gleichzeitig ein schweres Leberversagen, das durch die bereits vorbestehende Zirrhose beschleunigt wurde. Die Frage, ob Beethovens Tod die Folge ärztlichen Fehlverhaltens war, kann aus forensischer Sicht nur ex ante beantwortet werden, da der Stand des medizinischen Wissens der damaligen Zeit zu berücksichtigen ist.

The potential of enriched Pb (

The Upper Palaeolithic double burial of newborns and the single burial of a ca. 3-month-old infant uncovered at the Gravettian site of Krems-Wachtberg, Austria, are of paramount importance given the rarity of immature human remains from this time. Genome-wide ancient DNA shows that the male infants of the double grave are the earliest reported case of monozygotic twins, while the single grave´s individual was their 3rd-degree male relative. We assessed the individuals´ age at death by applying histological and µCT inspection of the maxillary second incisors (i2) in conjunction with C- and N-isotope ratios and Barium (Ba) intake as biomarker for breastfeeding. The results show that the twins were full-term newborns, and that while individual 2 died at birth, individual 1 survived for about 50 days. The findings show that Gravettian mortuary behaviour also included re-opening of a grave and manipulation of its layout and content., Maria Teschler-Nicola et al. use ancient DNA sequencing to report the earliest known case of human monozygotic twins found in a previously discovered Upper Palaeolithic burial site. Using bioanthropological and archaeological techniques, they also find that the twins were full-term newborns and that ancient mortuary behavior included re-opening of grave sites to bury related individuals together.

Because of its acidic and oxidative nature, iron gall ink promotes the endogenous degradation of paper manuscripts. Mechanical damage in areas of concentrated ink application or along mechanically stressed edges or folds results in problems during storage and handling. So far, such strongly degraded areas have usually been stabilized locally with thin Japanese paper and adhesives. A new and innovative material—nanocellulose—is being evaluated as a stabilizer for manuscripts that have been degraded by iron gall ink. The aim of this study is to integrate the nanocellulose application into a multi-stage calcium phytate/calcium hydrogencarbonate treatment to combine deacidification and stabilization, thus avoiding an additional stabilization and drying step. Two different types of fibrillated nanocelluloses were applied on manuscripts damaged by iron gall inks in different treatment steps. The newly formed, interlinked network of nanocellulose and paper was characterised before and after accelerated degradation in closed vials. The effects on the paper cellulose were studied by size exclusion chromatography and light scattering with carbonyl group profiling to follow cellulose hydrolysis and oxidation pathways. In addition, the migration behavior of iron ions was examined by laser ablation coupled with metal analysis (ICP-MS). This paper discusses the applicability and stability of nanocellulose on paper damaged by iron gall ink with regard to its long-term performance. Advantages and limitations are covered in detail.

Following the reviews of atomic-weight determinations and other cognate data in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021, the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (CIAAW) reports changes of standard atomic weights. The symbol A r°(E) was selected for standard atomic weight of an element to distinguish it from the atomic weight of an element E in a specific substance P, designated A r(E, P). Although there are common and well-established bioindicator organisms and tissues, there is still a need for reliable and sensitive bioindicators in aquatic environments. In the present pilot study, calcified structures in fish were applied as indicators of metal exposure in combination with commonly used fish soft tissues and intestinal parasites, therefore comprising short- and long-term indicators. Patterns of metal accumulation and distribution in soft (muscle, liver) and hard (scales, otoliths) tissues of brown trout (Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758) and their intestinal parasites, acanthocephalans (Dentitruncus truttae Sinzar, 1955), from the Krka River influenced by industrial and municipal wastewaters were estimated and compared. Most elements had higher levels in acanthocephalans, scales and liver than muscle and otoliths, possibly reflecting differences in metal uptake routes, tissue function and metabolic activity. Despite the recorded differences in metal contents, all applied bioindicators reflected environmental conditions in a similar way, indicating higher levels of most elements in fish from the contaminated rather than from the reference site. Acanthocephalans were confirmed as sensitive bioindicators due to effective metal accumulation capacity, while the combination of soft and hard tissues provided extended temporal information on metal exposure. Wastewater impact was evidenced as moderate metal pollution by all applied indicators and pointed to present but also long-term disturbances in the Krka River and the importance of continuous monitoring and protective actions.

Objectives: Since the late 1970s, when the first human skeletal remains from a pit (V1141) located within the Late Bronze Age hillfort at Stillfried an der March, Austria, were discovered, their deviation from the predominant burial rite of cremation became the subject-matter of a variety of archaeological and bioanthropological studies. Through continuous archaeological excavations, further settlement pits with unusual human inhumation burials or depositions of isolated skeletal remains became apparent and posed the question of their possible non-local origin. The human samples in this study come from the Pits V841 and V1133, furthermore we re-investigate two individuals from V1141. The aim is to get a better understanding of Stillfried’s population structure and to enrich the debate about the mortuary practices of the Urnfield culture. Material and Methods: Here we present and discuss the radiogenic Sr isotope ratios determined in the enamel of eleven individuals from three settlement pits: eight individuals from Pit V841 and one individual, represented by a skull without mandible (calvarium) of a 12–13-year-old child from Pit V1133; two individuals were taken from Pit V1141 and re-investigated for comparative reasons. We compared all data to signals of the local environment derived from modern environmental samples and to the autochthonous signal of the Late Bronze Age derived from archaeological faunal remains (incl. mussels) and archaeological plants. Further, we investigated and discussed the potential of a mathematical approach to access biogenic Sr isotopic information from diagenetically altered dentine. Results: It has been shown that both supposedly autochthonous and allochthonous (non-local) individuals are buried within the settlement pits of Stillfried, which shows that burial practices do not relate to the individual’s origins. In particular, the n(87Sr)/n(86Sr) isotopic values of six individuals match the supposedly autochthonous Sr signature, while the other five individuals represent allochthonous individuals. Three of the latter showed n(87Sr)/n(86Sr) values that were higher and two that were lower compared to the autochthonous Sr range, thereby indicating at least two different homelands. Despite the small sample size which constrains the validity of the data, the diversity of the inhabitants’ provenance reflects a high mobility. This may support the interpretation of Stillfried as a ‘central site’ – a finding which is also important in the wider context of the European Late Bronze Age.

Sr isotopes were applied to identify possible allochthony of skeletal remains retrieved from Tomb 26 of the pharaonic cemetery SAC5 on Sai Island (Nubia). Tooth enamel of nine individuals, including the Overseer of Goldsmiths Khummose and his presumed ‘wife’, dating from the New Kingdom, were investigated to gain information whether these individuals were first generation immigrants from Egypt (= allochthonous) or members of the local population inhabiting the area of Sai Island (= autochthonous). The interpretation of supposed allochthony and autochthony was based on the comparison of the Sr of human enamel to an assumed autochthonous Sr isotopic composition. The autochthonous Sr signal on Sai Island during the New Kingdom was derived from archaeological animal samples (rodent, sheep/goat, dog and local mollusc shells dating from the New Kingdom) in combination with local environmental samples (paleo sediments dating from the New Kingdom and literature Sr isotope value of Nile River water for the New Kingdom era). As the Sr values in enamel of all individuals investigated lay within the determined autochthonous Sr range on Sai Island during the New Kingdom, all individuals were classified as supposed members of the local population on Sai Island. Elevated Sr, V, Mn and U mass fractions indicated a high degree of post-mortem alterations of human primary dentine. Hence, a mathematical approach was tested in order to correct the Sr isotope ratios in human primary dentine for diagenetic alteration considering a diagenetic Sr proportion and the Sr isotopic composition of the repository material. The rich funerary equipment associated with the burials in Tomb 26 allowed a dating of the family members of Khnummose and illustrated that they belonged to the Egyptian elite on Sai Island as far as their cultural identity is concerned. In combination with the Sr isotopic analysis, Tomb 26 provided fresh information on the complex coexistence and biological and cultural entanglement of Egyptians and Nubians on Sai Island during the New Kingdom.

Copper-based fungicides have been used for a long time in viticulture and have accumulated in many vineyard soils. In this study, incrementing Cu(OH)2-based fungicide application from 0.05 to 5 g Cu kg−1 on two agricultural soils (an acidic sandy loam (L, pH 4.95) and an alkaline silt loam (D, pH 7.45)) resulted in 5 times more mobile Cu in the acidic soil. The most sensitive parameters of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) growing in these soils were the root nodule number, decreasing to 34% and 15% of the control at 0.1 g Cu kg−1 in soil L and at 1.5 g Cu kg−1 in soil D, respectively, as well as the nodule biomass, decreasing to 25% and 27% at 0.5 g Cu kg−1 in soil L and at 1.5 g Cu kg−1 in soil D, respectively. However, the enzymatic N2-fixation was not directly affected by Cu in spite of the presence of Cu in the meristem and the zone of effective N2-fixation, as illustrated by chemical imaging. The strongly different responses observed in the two tested soils reflect the higher buffering capacity of the alkaline silt loam and showed that Cu mitigation and remediation strategies should especially target vineyards with acidic, sandy soils.

Ambient air pollutants are a global public health problem accounting for millions of annual deaths. A mobile module-based wind tunnel (WT) was developed to investigate the interaction between airborne particulate matter and various surface structures. The external dimensions were 4.33 m × 1.96 m × 1.73 m (lwh). The tunnel provided a cross-section of 0.40 m × 1.10 m (wh) and a total volume of 2.84 m3. An exchangeable test section in the WT offered a vertical area of one square meter to introduce variable installations. Due to the modular design, the WT could be divided into seven segments. This enables flexibility in setting, easy transport and set up at different locations. Atmospheric parameters (temperature, humidity, flow speeds and flow directions) were measured. At the test section, determined flow speeds ranged from 0.3 to 2.6 m s−1, with turbulence intensities detected between 9% and 11% and Reynold numbers from 10,000 to 90,000. Losses of ambient PM within the blank tunnel were less than 10% for particle counts (&gt, 0.25 µm), while smaller losses were obtained for PM1 and PM2.5. Thus, the construction, performance, as well as the limitations and various possible applications of the WT are shown in this article.

The focus of this study was to assess the potential of otolith microchemistry as a fishery management tool for different European freshwater fish species in an Alpine foreland with a diverse range of different water bodies but low geological variation. 87Sr/86Sr isotope and Sr/Ca ratios in water samples from 26 habitat sites in a pre-alpine catchment region around lake Chiemsee, Germany, an important region for recreational and economic fisheries, were analysed. 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios and the Sr mass fractions in otoliths of 246 fish out of 16 species were determined using (laser ablation) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry ((LA)-ICP-MS). Habitats could be discriminated into three distinct strontium isotope regions (SIGs) and seven clusters with characteristic 87Sr/86Sr isotope and Sr/Ca ratios. The direct comparison of 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in water and otolith samples allowed to identify fish that might have been a) migrating b) transferred from other water bodies or c) stocked from fish farms. Sr/Ca ratios in water and the Sr mass fraction in otoliths were highly correlated, although significant differences between species from the same environment could be documented. Sr mass fractions in sagittae of Perca fluviatilis were about 60 % of those in sagittae of Coregonus spp and of lapilli of roach Rutilus rutilus from the same habitats. Different partition factors for water to otolith Sr/Ca mass fractions were determined for different species. Discrimination of fish otoliths by 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios and Sr mass fractions according to habitat clusters was possible with success rates ranging from 92 % to 100 % for cyprinids, European perch Perca fluviatilis, whitefish Coregonus spp. and European grayling Thymallus thymallus, and was 74 % for salmonids. Visualization and quantification of corrosion processes is essential in materials research. Here we present a new approach for 2D spatiotemporal imaging of metal corrosion dynamics in situ. The approach combines time-integrated Mg

Physical distancing and restriction of movements as measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 required people to change their work, home and social lives. Loneliness and social isolation have emerged as key public health issues during the pandemic. Traditionally when considering loneliness the focus is often on individual factors rather than within the context of structural and environmental dimensions. This paper will utilise data from the Coping with Loneliness, Isolation and Covid-19 global online survey which had over 20, 000 global responses from people aged 18+ in 2020. Analysis will use the lens of ‘place’ and the 5-item UCLA scale and 6-item Lubben social network scale to understand the social and demographic characteristics and structural and environmental factors associated with those experiencing loneliness and/or social isolation in rural and urban areas both before and during the pandemic. The paper will conclude with key messages from a public health perspective.

Little is known about woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) mobility and range. Here we use high temporal resolution sequential analyses of strontium isotope ratios along an entire 1.7-meter-long tusk to reconstruct the movements of an Arctic woolly mammoth that lived 17,100 years ago, during the last ice age. We use an isotope-guided random walk approach to compare the tusk’s strontium and oxygen isotope profiles to isotopic maps. Our modeling reveals patterns of movement across a geographically extensive range during the animal’s ~28-year life span that varied with life stages. Maintenance of this level of mobility by megafaunal species such as mammoth would have been increasingly difficult as the ice age ended and the environment changed at high latitudes.

We describe a method for two-dimensional (2D) visualization and quantification of the distribution of labile (i.e., reversibly adsorbed) inorganic nutrient (e.g., P, Fe, Mn) and contaminant (e.g., As, Cd, Pb) solute species in the soil adjacent to plant roots (the ‘rhizosphere’) at sub-millimeter (~100 µm) spatial resolution. The method combines sink-based solute sampling by the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique with spatially resolved chemical analysis by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The DGT technique is based on thin hydrogels with homogeneously distributed analyte-selective binding phases. The variety of available binding phases allows for the preparation of different DGT gel types following simple gel fabrication procedures. For DGT gel deployment in the rhizosphere, plants are grown in flat, transparent growth containers (rhizotrons), which enable minimal invasive access to a soil-grown root system. After a pre-growth period, DGT gels are applied to selected regions of interest for in situ solute sampling in the rhizosphere. Afterwards, DGT gels are retrieved and prepared for subsequent chemical analysis of the bound solutes using LA-ICP-MS line-scan imaging. Application of internal normalization using 13C and external calibration using matrix-matched gel standards further allows for the quantification of the 2D solute fluxes. This method is unique in its capability to generate quantitative, sub-mm scale 2D images of multi-element solute fluxes in soil-plant environments, exceeding the achievable spatial resolution of other methods for measuring solute gradients in the rhizosphere substantially. We present the application and evaluation of the method for imaging multiple cationic and anionic solute species in the rhizosphere of terrestrial plants and highlight the possibility of combining this method with complementary solute imaging techniques.

Surveys conducted in Eilat’s upper mesophotic coral ecosystem (MCE) revealed protruding columnar calcareous structures with a Sinularia octocoral colony growing atop of each. The current study addressed the hypothesis that these colonies produce spiculites, and sought to determine (a) the spatial occurrence and dimensions of the spiculite-forming colonies and their species affiliation; (b) their microstructural features; and (c) the elemental composition of the columnar spiculites in comparison to the sclerites of the colonies. All the spiculite-forming colonies were exclusively found in the upper MCEs and produced by S. vrijmoethi. This type of spiculite, including its elemental analysis, is reported here for the first time for coral reefs in general and for the MCE in particular. Examination of the spiculites by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed spindle shaped-sclerites cemented by crystallites. The elemental composition of the sclerites differed from that of the cementing crystallites, in featuring ~8% Mg in the former and none in the latter. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry revealed fragments of spiculite to be composed of 35% sclerites and 65% crystallites. X-ray powder diffraction analysis of individual sclerites indicated that they are composed exclusively of magnesium-calcite, and the spiculite fragments to also feature 9.3 ± 4% aragonite and 5–7% amorphous calcium carbonate. Consequently, it is proposed that the formation of the crystallites, which lithify the sclerites, is caused by a non-biogenic aragonite precipitation, and that the living colony might benefit from this protruding spiculite structure by means of enhanced exposure to water flow.

A versatile approach to determining the elemental content of more than 50 elements in different components of electronic devices on the example of smartphones was developed. The analytical protocol is based on accurate disassembly of smartphones, a single processing microwave-assisted acid digestion followed by ICP-OES and ICP-MS measurements. Method optimization and validation were performed using the certified reference material ERM®-EZ505 electronic scrap. Combined uncertainties revealed measurement uncertainty and sample heterogeneity as main contributors. The contents of up to 57 elements could be quantified in the certified reference material ERM®-EZ505 electronic scrap. The results of the certified elements Au, Be, Cu, In, Ni, Pd, and Pt overlapped within their uncertainties with the certified range and revealed recoveries of 100% ± 16%. Only Ag shows incomplete recoveries (75% ± 35%). The validated method was applied to all metal-containing components of selected smartphones, excluding batteries. The contents of up to 57 elements could be quantified and are presented exemplarily for printed circuit boards, which represent the most complex components in the investigated smartphones and thus limit the capability of the method. The ten most abundant elements in decreasing order are Cu, Fe, Si, Ni, Sn, Zn, Ba, Al, Cr, Ti, which comprise approx. 80% of the weight of the printed circuit boards. The method allows for the determination of metal content in various parts of modern smartphones, providing the basis for the estimation and prediction of future metal usage and thus the comprehensive investigation of recycling and circular economy aspects.

The investigation of the fractionation of S compounds in forest soils is a powerful tool for interpreting S dynamics and S biogeochemistry in forest ecosystems. Beech stands on high pH (nutrient-rich) sites on Flysch and on low pH (nutrient-poor) sites on Molasse were selected for testing the influence of stemflow, which represents a high input of water and dissolved elements to the soil, on spatial patterns of sulfur (S) fractions. Soil cores were taken at six distances from a beech stem per site at 55 cm uphill and at 27, 55, 100, 150 and 300 cm downhill from the stem. The cores were divided into the mineral soil horizons 0–3, 3–10, 10–20, 20–30 and 30–50 cm. Soil samples were characterized for pH, Corg, pedogenic Al and Fe oxides and S fractions. Sequential extraction by NH4Cl, NH4H2PO4 and HCl yielded readily available sulfate-S (RAS), adsorbed sulfate-S (AS) and HCl-soluble sulfate-S (HCS). Organic sulfur (OS) was estimated as the difference between total sulfur (ToS) and inorganic sulfur (RAS + AS + HCS). Organic sulfur was further divided into ester sulfate-S (ES, HI-reduction) and carbon bonded sulfur (CS). On Flysch, RAS represented 3–6%, AS 2–12%, HCS 0–8% and OS 81–95% of ToS. On Molasse, RAS amounted 1–6%, AS 1–60%, HCS 0–8% and OS 37–95% of ToS. Spatial S distribution patterns with respect to the distance from the tree stem base could be clearly observed at all investigated sites. The presented data is a contribution to current reports on negative input–output S budgets of forest watersheds, suggesting that mineralization of OS on nutrient rich soils and desorption of historic AS on nutrient-poor soils are the dominant S sources, which have to be considered in future modeling of sulfur.

This pilot study highlights the substantial potential of using isotopically enriched (non-radioactive) metals to study the fate of biodegradable metal implants. It was possible to show that magnesium (Mg) release can be observed by combining isotopic mass spectrometry and isotopic pattern deconvolution for data reduction, even at low amounts of Mg released a from slowly degrading 26 Mg enriched (>99%) Mg metal. Following implantation into rats, structural in vivo changes were monitored by μCT. Results showed that the applied Mg had an average degradation rate of 16 ± 5 μm year −1 , which corresponds with the degradation rate of pure Mg. Bone and tissue extraction was performed 4, 24, and 52 weeks after implantation. Bone cross sections were analyzed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the lateral 26 Mg distribution. The 26 Mg/ 24 Mg ratios in digested tissue and excretion samples were analyzed by multi collector ICP-MS. Isotope pattern deconvolution in combination with ICP-MS enabled detection of Mg pin material in amounts as low as 200 ppm in bone tissues and 20 ppm in tissues up to two fold increased Mg levels with a contribution of pin-derived Mg of up to 75% (4 weeks) and 30% (24 weeks) were found adjacent to the implant. After complete degradation, no visual bone disturbance or residual pin-Mg could be detected in cortical bone. In organs, increased Δ 26 Mg/ 24 Mg values up to 16‰ were determined compared to control samples. Increased Δ 26 Mg/ 24 Mg values were detected in serum samples at a constant total Mg level. In contrast to urine, feces did not show a shift in the 26 Mg/ 24 Mg ratios. This investigation showed that the organism is capable of handling excess Mg well and that bones fully recover after degradation. Statement of Significance Magnesium alloys as bone implants have faced increasing attention over the past years. In vivo degradation and metabolism studies of these implant materials have shown the promising application in orthopaedic trauma surgery. With advance in Mg research it has become increasingly important to monitor the fate of the implant material in the organism. For the first time, the indispensible potential of isotopically enriched materials is documented by applying 26 Mg enriched Mg implants in an animal model. Therefore, the spatial distribution of pin-Mg in bone and the pin-Mg migration and excretion in the organism could be monitored to better understand metal degradation as well as Mg turn over and excretion.

An exploratory study for verifying regional geographical origin of carrots from specific production regions in Austria (“Genussregionen”) was performed by combining chemical fingerprinting methods, namely n(86Sr)/n(87Sr) isotope amount ratios, multi-elemental and metabolomic pattern. Chemometric classification models were built on individual and combined datasets using (data-driven) soft independent modelling of class analogies and (orthogonal) projections to latent structures-discriminant analysis to characterise and differentiate carrots grown in five regions in Austria. A predictive ability of 97% or better (depending on the classification technique) was obtained using combined Sr isotope amount ratios and multi-elemental data. The use of data fusion strategies, in particular the mid-level option (fusion of selected variables from the different analytical platforms), allowed highly efficient (99–100%, except soft independent modelling of class analogy with 97%) and correct classification of carrot samples.

Isotope pattern deconvolution (IPD) was used to determine the contribution of different Sr sources to the Sr isotopic composition of natural samples using the examples of sturgeon caviar and otoliths. For this purpose, the Sr isotopic composition of raw and salted sturgeon caviar, and otoliths as well as water, fish feed and salt (representing the assumed main contributors to the final isotopic composition of strontium in caviar) was analyzed using MC ICP-MS. The molar fractions and their uncertainties were determined using multiple-linear regression modeling and linear algebra calculations. The optimized approach was applied to caviar and otolith samples of different origin. The Sr isotopic composition of raw caviar and otoliths was formed of 79.8 ± 4.3% Sr from water and 20.2 ± 4.3% Sr from fish feed (1 SD, n = 5, between site variations). Deconvolution was possible even when the isotopic difference of the n(87Sr)/n(86Sr) between sources was less than 0.1%. The influence of salting on the isotopic composition of processed caviar accounted for up to almost 80% for samples treated with salt containing high concentrations of Sr. The developed methodology provides the basis for the accurate origin determination of samples by n(87Sr)/n(86Sr) isotopic-amount ratios, in cases, where the initial natural signature is modified by known additives.

A systematic investigation of single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) signal profiles recorded with normal (ms-range) and high (μs-range) temporal resolution for spherical and rod-shaped gold nanoparticles was performed. The experiments with nanorods were carried out on hemispherically capped cylindrical particles synthesized in the aspect ratio range from 1.5 to 4.5. A comparison of NP signals and time profiles for spherical and rod-shaped NPs revealed that (i) the volume of the particles can be assessed by conventional spICP-MS measurements using a joint, linear calibration plot; and (ii) the shape of signal time profiles and transit times for equal-volume spherical and rod-shaped NPs are different, based on which the aspect ratio can be calculated. By using the statistical evaluation of the high resolution signal time profiles, an analytical method was developed for the discrimination and dimensional analysis of nanorod-shaped NPs. The method is based on observing the shortest and longest transit times for nanoparticles. In the case of spherical NPs, these transit times are very similar, whereas in the case of nanorods, the shortest and longest transit times correlate with the characteristic width and length of the particles, respectively. This method is the first nanorod dimensional characterization method in the literature, which is based solely on ICP-MS measurements. It was shown that the accuracy of the method is very good – the characteristic length and width of the particles could be determined with less than 6% error.

An interdisciplinary study, involving geologists, chemists and pedologists, started aiming at identifying a "Geo-Pedo-Fingerprint" (GPF) univocally linking the wine to its origin, namely, the Piedirosso vineyards growing in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area. The focal point of this research was the characterization of the whole parent material-soil-vineyard-wine system, achieved by correlating the elemental pattern - with special reference to micro-nutrients and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) - and Sr isotopic ratios, to identify a reliable and convenient 'GPF', as a guaranteed indicator of wine provenance. A representative soil/Piedirosso vineyard system was identified and characterized. Samples from each soil horizon as well as from vine branches, leaves, grapes and wine were collected and analyzed. All samples were analyzed by multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) to determine their 87Sr/86Sr isotopic composition, by ICP-Quadrupole MS to measure multi-elemental composition including REE, and by X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) for the quantitative evaluation of the mineral phases occurring in soil samples.Statistical analysis (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, Factor Analysis) revealed the existence of separate correlations of element distribution between: i) soil, as nutrient pool source, and vegetative compartments, i.e. branches and leaves, as biochemical yards for nutrient elaboration and marshaling, ii) vegetative compartments and the productive compartment, i.e. grapes as the metabolic outcome of the vine, and, iii) the productive compartment and its artifact produced by man, i.e. wine. However, no sequential correlation of elements from soil to wine did appear, likely because clusters of elements were discriminated due to the varying takeup and fractionation processes in plants, as well as during vinification processes. Therefore, none of the investigated elements was a liable 'GPF' as a candidate tracer from soil to wine.In contrast, the use of a petrogenetic tracer such as 87Sr/86Sr isotopic composition provided satisfactory responses. In fact, the values of such a ratio within the entire studied chain vary in a very small range from 0.7076 to 0.7084, thus falling within the typical range for volcanites of Campi Flegrei (0.7065-0.7086). These results currently represent the only study focusing on a geotracer, such as the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio, linked with a pedological survey to identify the volcanic Campanian wine-producing chains from soil parent material-to-wine. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This study is dedicated to the systematic investigation of the effect of interferences on Sr isotopic analyses in biological apatite and carbonate matrices using laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC ICP-MS). Trends towards higher 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios for LA-MC ICP-MS compared to solution-nebulization based MC ICP-MS when analysing bioapatite matrices (e.g. human teeth) and lower ratios in case of calcium carbonates (e.g. fish ear stones) were observed. This effect can be related to the presence of significant matrix-related interferences such as molecular ions (e.g. ( 40 Ca- 31 P- 16 O) + , ( 40 Ar- 31 P- 16 O) + , ( 42 Ca- 44 Ca) + , ( 46 Ca 40 Ar) + ) as well as in many cases concomitant atomic ions (e.g. 87 Rb + , 174 Hf 2 + ). Direct 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio measurements in Ca-rich samples are conducted without the possibility of prior sample separation, which can be accomplished routinely for solution-based analysis. The presence of Ca-Ar and Ca-Ca molecular ion interferences in the mass range of Sr isotopes is shown using the mass resolving capabilities of a single collector inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometer operated in medium mass resolution when analysing bioapatites and calcium carbonate samples. The major focus was set on analysing human tooth samples, fish hard parts and geological carbonates. Potential sources of interferences were identified and corrected for. The combined corrections of interferences and adequate instrumental isotopic fractionation correction procedures lead to accurate data even though increased uncertainties have to be taken into account. The results are discussed along with approaches presented in literature for data correction in laser ablation analysis.

A diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique, based on a strongly basic anion exchange resin (Amberlite IRA-400), was successfully tested for 34S/32S analysis in labile soil sulfate. Separation of matrix elements (Na, K, and Ca) that potentially cause non-spectral interferences in 34S/32S analysis by MC ICP-MS (multi-collector inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry) during sampling of sulfate was demonstrated. No isotopic fractionation caused by diffusion or elution of sulfate was observed below a resin gel disc loading of ≤79 μg S. Above this threshold, fractionation towards 34S was observed. The method was applied to 11 different topsoils and one mineral soil profile (0–100 cm depth) and compared with soil sulfate extraction by water. The S amount and isotopic ratio in DGT-S and water-extractable sulfate correlated significantly (r 2 = 0.89 and r 2 = 0.74 for the 11 topsoils, respectively). The systematically lower 34S/32S isotope ratios of the DGT-S were ascribed to mineralization of organic S.

We report on the long-term effects of degrading magnesium implants on bone tissue in a growing rat skeleton using continuous in vivo micro-Computed Tomography, histological staining and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Two different magnesium alloys—one rapidly degrading (ZX50) and one slowly degrading (WZ21)—were used to evaluate the bone response and distribution of released Mg and Y ions in the femur of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Regardless of whether the alloy degrades rapidly or slowly, we found that bone recovers restitutio ad integrum after complete degradation of the magnesium implant. The degradation of the Mg alloys generates a significant increase in Mg concentration in the cortical bone near the remaining implant parts, but the Mg accumulation disappears after the implant degrades completely. The degradation of the Y-containing alloy WZ21 leads to Y enrichment in adjacent bone tissues and in newly formed bone inside the medullary space. Locally high Y concentrations suggest migration not only of Y ions but also of Y-containing intermetallic particles. However, after the full degradation of the implant the Y-enrichment disappears almost completely. An optimized method is described for U/Pu separation and subsequent measurement of the amount contents of uranium isotopes by total evaporation (TE) TIMS with a double filament setup combined with filament carburization for age determination of plutonium samples. The use of carburized filaments improved the signal behavior for total evaporation TIMS measurements of uranium. Elevated uranium ion formation by passive heating during rhenium signal optimization at the start of the total evaporation measurement procedure was found to be a result from byproducts of the separation procedure deposited on the filament. This was avoided using carburized filaments. Hence, loss of sample before the actual TE data acquisition was prevented, and automated measurement sequences could be accomplished. Furthermore, separation of residual plutonium in the separated uranium fraction was achieved directly on the filament by use of the carburized filaments. Although the analytical approach was originally tailored to achieve reliable results only for the (238)Pu/(234)U, (239)Pu/(235)U, and (240)Pu/(236)U chronometers, the optimization of the procedure additionally allowed the use of the (242)Pu/(238)U isotope amount ratio as a highly sensitive indicator for residual uranium present in the sample, which is not of radiogenic origin. The sample preparation method described in this article has been successfully applied for the age determination of CRM NBS 947 and other sulfate and oxide plutonium samples.

53 metallic elements from smartphones were investigated with regard to metal prices, metal production, and content in comparison to mined ores. The metal content of the 7.42 billion smartphone devices sold from 2012 to 2017 could theoretically maintain the global supply for 91 days for Ga, 73 days for Ta, 23 days for Pd, 14 days for Au, and 6 days for REE. The pure metal value of a single smartphone device for the investigated metals currently sums to 1.13 US $; it averaged at 1.05 US $ from 2012 to 2017 with the highest value of 1.32 US $ in 2012. The Au content is low (16.83 mg per device), yet constitutes the highest value with a current share of approximately 72% of total value for all measured metals, followed by Pd (10%). Approximately 82% of total metal value can be recycled with current standard recycling methods for Au, Cu, Pd, Pt, which only comprise 6 wt% of the total device. The printed circuit board (pcb) contains 90% of the measured Au, 98% of Cu, 99% of Pd, 86% of In, and 93% of Ta. The Au, Pd, Cu, Pt, Ta, In, Ga contents in a smartphone pcb are significantly higher than the metal content in currently mined ores. Magnets contain 96% of the measured REE and 40% of the measured Ga, with higher concentrations than ores for REE and Ga. For Co and Ge, metal content in smartphones (w/o batteries) is lower than in ores.

Trace element concentrations in the rhizosphere were quantified to better understand why soil liming often fails to reduce cadmium (Cd) uptake by plants. Maize seedlings were grown on a soil with natural background levels of Cd and zinc (Zn). Soil liming increased soil pH from 4.9 to 6.5 and lowered the soil solution free ion activities by factor 7 (Cd) and 9 (Zn). In contrast, shoot Cd concentrations were unaffected by liming while shoot Zn concentrations were lowered by factor 1.9. Mapping of labile soil trace elements using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) in combination with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) revealed an almost complete depletion of Cd in the rhizosphere in all soil treatments, showing that Cd uptake is controlled by diffusion. The flux of Cd from soil to the DGT, with direct contact between the soil and the binding gel, was unaffected by liming whereas it decreased by factor 3 for Zn, closely mimicking the contrasting effects of liming on Cd and Zn bioavailability. This evidence, combined with additional flux data of freshly spiked Cd and Zn isotopes in soil and with modelling, suggests that the diffusive transport of Cd in unsaturated soil is more strongly controlled by the labile adsorbed metal concentration than by its concentration in solution.
