Math anxiety is a common experience that interferes with learning and achievement in mathematics. Considering that mathematics learning mostly takes place within the classroom, it is critical to examine how math anxiety develops in this context.The purpose of the current scoping review was to identify classroom-learning environment factors associated with math anxiety in elementary and high school students.Out of an initial sample of 3011 studies, 28 were eligible for inclusion.Data on author(s), publication year, and study location; sample demographics; classroom variables; intervention details (if applicable); measures; and key results were extracted from articles.Numerous protective and vulnerability factors were identified.Directions for future research and methodological implications were explored.

Objective: This prospective longitudinal cohort aims to identify biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to maternal perinatal mental health, family well-being, and child development. Method: Pregnant individuals (N=1130) were recruited between 8-20 gestation weeks. Questionnaire data were collected through a web-based platform together with biosamples for genetic analysis. Baseline characteristics of the cohort are described. A Bayesian model explored potential pandemic-associated changes in baseline maternal mental health symptoms throughout recruitment. Results: At baseline, 28.3% and 11.6% of pregnant participants reported clinically significant symptoms of anxiety (Spielberger Trait Anxiety Inventory ≥ 40) or depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale ≥ 13). The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased likelihood of elevated scores on brief screening instruments for anxiety and depression. There was insufficient evidence for such effects using other screening tools. Conclusion(s): We further highlight anxiety and depression as common complications of pregnancy but find a modest impact of the pandemic on mental health within this cohort. Leveraging the unique data collected through this study we seek to inform screening practices and health policy to improve the well-being of mothers and families.

Background Social anxiety (SA), a prevalent comorbid condition in psychotic disorders with a negative impact on functioning, requires adequate intervention relatively early. Using a randomized controlled trial, we tested the efficacy of a group cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention for SA (CBT-SA) that we developed for youth who experienced the first episode of psychosis (FEP). For our primary outcome, we hypothesized that compared to the active control of group cognitive remediation (CR), the CBT-SA group would show a reduction in SA that would be maintained at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. For secondary outcomes, it was hypothesized that the CBT-SA group would show a reduction of positive and negative symptoms and improvements in recovery and functioning. Method Ninety-six patients with an FEP and SA, recruited from five different FEP programs in the Montreal area, were randomized to 13 weekly group sessions of either CBT-SA or CR intervention. Results Linear mixed models revealed that multiple measures of SA significantly reduced over time, but with no significant group differences. Positive and negative symptoms, as well as functioning improved over time, with negative symptoms and functioning exhibiting a greater reduction in the CBT-SA group. Conclusions While SA decreased over time with both interventions, a positive effect of the CBT-SA intervention on measures of negative symptoms, functioning, and self-reported recovery at follow-up suggests that our intervention had a positive effect that extended beyond symptoms specific to SA. Increased stressful experiences are pervasive among healthcare providers (HCPs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Identifying resources that help mitigate stress is critical to maintaining HCPs’ well-being. However, to our knowledge, no instrument has systematically examined how different levels of resources help HCPs cope with stress during COVID-19. This cross-sectional study involved 119 HCPs (64 nurses and 55 physicians) and evaluated the perceived availability, utilization, and helpfulness of a list of personal, hospital, and healthcare system resources. Participants also reported on their level of burnout, psychological distress, and intentions to quit. Results revealed that HCPs perceived the most useful personal resource to be family support; the most useful hospital resources were a safe environment, personal protective equipment, and support from colleagues; the most useful system resources were job protection, and clear communication and information about COVID. Moreover, HCPs who perceived having more available hospital resources also reported lower levels of psychological distress symptoms, burnout, and intentions to quit. Finally, although training and counseling services were perceived as useful to reduce stress, training was not perceived as widely available, and counseling services, though reported as being available, were underutilized. This instrument helps identify resources that support HCPs, providing implications for healthcare management.

IntroductionTherapeutic hypothermia (TH) became the standard of care treatment for neonates with moderate and severe neonatal encephalopathy (NE) in most industrialized countries about 10 years ago. Although TH is effective in reducing mortality and the incidence of severe developmental disabilities, the recent literature converges in reporting frequent cognitive and behavioural difficulties at school entry in children with NE-TH. Although these challenges are deemed minor compared with cerebral palsy and intellectual disability, their impacts on a child’s self-determination and family’s well-being are quite significant. Therefore, the nature and extent of these difficulties need to be comprehensively described so that appropriate care can be offered.Methods and analysisThe current study will be the largest follow-up study of neonates with NE treated with TH to characterize their developmental outcomes and associated brain structural profiles at 9 years of age. Specifically, we will compare executive function, attention, social cognition, behaviour, anxiety, self-esteem, peer problems, brain volume, cortical features, white matter microstructure and myelination between children with NE-TH and matched peers without NE. Associations of perinatal risk factors and structural brain integrity with cognitive, behavioural and psycho-emotional deficits will be evaluated to inform about the potential aggravating and protective factors associated with function.Ethics and disseminationThis study is supported by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (202203PJT-480065-CHI-CFAC-168509), and received approval from the Pediatric Ethical Review Board of the McGill University Health Center (MP-37-2023-9320). The study findings will be disseminated in scientific journals and conferences and presented to parental associations and healthcare providers to inform best practices.Trial registration numberNCT05756296.

Background To clarify the direction of the association between frequency of cannabis use, depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation from 15 to 20 years using cross-lagged analyses. Method We included 1606 adolescents from the province of Quebec followed since 1997 with information on frequency of cannabis use (none/monthly/weekly), depression (defined as being in the top 10% symptoms) and serious suicidal ideation at ages 15, 17 and 20 years. Results The prevalence of weekly cannabis use increased from 7.0% at age 15 years to 15.6% by age 20 years. Adolescents who reported using cannabis weekly at one age were 11 to 15 times more likely to continue using cannabis over time. In longitudinal cross-lagged analyses, weekly cannabis use at age 15 was associated with greater odds (OR=2.19, 95% CI=1.04-4.58) of suicidal ideation two years later. However, other substance use (alcohol, tobacco, other drugs) fully explained this association. Further, depression predicted subsequent weekly cannabis use, even after adjusting for comorbid other substance use (eg, for depression at 15 years predicting cannabis use at 17 years: OR=2.30, 95% CI=1.19-4.43). Limitations Quantity of cannabis consumed was not measured. Conclusion Findings suggest that depressive symptoms in adolescence may represent a risk factor for weekly cannabis consumption, which once initiated is likely to remain chronic. Weekly cannabis use increased risk for suicidal ideation, but not independently from other substance use including alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Adults who have experienced child maltreatment report problems with emotion regulation (ER) and parenting difficulties, which have been associated with maladaptation in the next generation. However, parental emotion socialization is understudied in survivors of child maltreatment. The aim of the present study was to examine whether childhood polyvictimization would influence parental ER skills and parents’ use of unsupportive contingencies in response to anger, sadness, and anxiety. A secondary aim was to determine whether these variables would predict children’s emotional inhibition. Parents (n = 175) of children between the ages of 8 and 12 participated in an online study. Participants completed self-report measures assessing their child maltreatment history; their regulation and socialization of anger, sadness, and anxiety; and a measure of their child’s emotional inhibition. A sequential mediation model revealed that childhood polyvictimization predicted lower levels of parental ER skills, which in turn, increased the likelihood of parents reporting unsupportive contingencies. Further, parents’ use of unsupportive contingencies predicted higher levels of emotional inhibition in children. The present study provides preliminary evidence to support the relationship between a history of child maltreatment, parents’ use of unsupportive contingencies, and emotional inhibition in the next generation. Practitioners working with parents who have been maltreated should focus on enhancing parental ER in order to help parents scaffold healthy emotional development in their children.

Background It is presently estimated that as much as 10% of emerging adults are at risk for a gambling disorder. The consequences stemming from problematic gambling engagement include increased substance use, mental health disorders, suicidality, financial strain and legal issues. The present study explores whether deficits in emotion regulation explain the association between problem gambling severity and depression. Methods A sample of 820 emerging adult gamblers (Mage = 21.14 years-old, SD = 2.90, 50.9% female) completed an online survey including an assessment of problematic engagement in gambling over the past year, levels of anxious/depressive symptomology, and difficulties in emotion regulation. In total, 15.6% and 8.2% of this sample were at moderate or high risk for gambling disorder. Results Results from a linear regression model revealed that difficulties with impulse control positively contributed to problem gambling scores and engagement in goal-directed behavior positively contributed to problem gambling scores, even after accounting for symptoms of depression. Moreover, results from a mediation model revealed that the association between problem gambling and depression was explained by participants’ deficits in non-acceptance, goals, strategies, and clarity. Limitations Limitations include the use of self-report and cross-sectional data making it difficult to infer causality. Conclusions These findings add to our understanding of the mechanisms that appear to explain for the first time the affective consequences of problem gambling. Enhancing specific dimensions of emotion regulation will allow for tailored interventions among gamblers with depression, ultimately achieving better mental health outcomes.

Despite the burgeoning interest in the relationships between parental emotion socialization practices, emotion regulation (ER), and anxiety in youth, there is considerably less research focusing on the ways in which parental emotion socialization in childhood is associated with these variables in adulthood. A sample of 202 university students completed an online survey, which aimed to examine the relationships between retrospective reports of parental emotion socialization strategies in childhood, ER in adulthood, and trait anxiety. Adult perceptions of their parents’ use of unsupportive emotion socialization strategies in childhood was related to lower levels of ER skills and greater use of maladaptive ER strategies in adulthood, while perceptions of parents’ use of supportive strategies were related to higher levels of ER skills and greater use of adaptive ER strategies. Together, adult perceptions of unsupportive parental emotion socialization strategies in childhood and their ER skills and ER strategy use in adulthood predicted trait anxiety.

Cyberbullying has been associated with mental health issues, physical health, and achievement. Cybervictimized adolescents report increased levels of internalized disorders such as depression and anxiety, emotional distress, suicidal ideation and attempts, psychosomatic complaints, poorer physical health, and externalized issues such as increased delinquency and substance abuse in contrast to their nonbullied peers; and these difficulties persist over time. Emotion regulation plays a key role in the development of intervention and prevention efforts as it provides a theoretical framework by which to gain a greater understanding of the precursors of cyberbullying and cybervictimization risk. This chapter explores the implications of cyberbullying intervention development and design from a theory of mind framework, using a socio-ecological perspective by (1) providing an overview of theory of mind as a theoretical framework of cyberbullying, (2) better understanding the risk and protective factors of cyberbullying, (3) exploring the implications of existing intervention programs and prevention efforts, and (4) addressing evidence-based program development considerations. Adaptive emotion regulation abilities have unequivocal implications on the prevention of cyberbullying given the underlying unresolved emotional issues identified as precursors to related behaviors. Childhood represents a critical period to foster the development of these emotional competencies; laying the foundation for individuals to regulate their own emotions more adaptively and be able to later adjust to their environment. Further guidelines and considerations for specific cyberbullying interventions are also explored.

We aim to clarify whether type and timing of mental health symptoms in early pregnancy distinctly contribute to maternal-fetal vascular function, independent from the psychotropic medications given to treat these conditions.Data from a prospective cohort study (n = 1678) were used to test whether self-reported fears about giving birth and depressive symptoms prior to 16 weeks of gestation were associated with vascular outcomes predictive of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) i.e., systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP); uterine artery pulsatility index (UAPI); umbilical artery resistance index (UmbARI); and urine protein creatinine ratio. Multiple linear regressions models and mediation models were used to test for associations between predictors and outcomes, controlling for previously identified risk factors for vascular dysfunction such as maternal age and history of infertility.Fears about giving birth in early pregnancy were inversely associated with UmbARI (β = -0.33, p = 0.03, df = 51) mid- to late-pregnancy (≥20 weeks). Depressive symptoms in early pregnancy were also inversely associated with maternal systolic BP (β = -0.13, p = 0.01, df = 387) and diastolic BP (β = -0.10, p = 0.04, df = 387) during the first trimester.While fears about giving birth in early pregnancy were associated with lower vascular resistance in the fetal-placental unit, early depressive symptoms were associated with lower maternal vascular tone. At the very least, our results support the notion that early maternal psychological distress is unlikely to account for the development of HDP later during pregnancy and provide preliminary evidence to support distinct roles of pregnancy-related anxiety and depressive symptoms in maternal-fetal vascular function.

Increased participation in structured exercise (SE) routines has positive effects on physiological, cognitive, and social development (SD) for students of all ages and abilities. SE offers unique opportunities for social learning in a non-academic context. SE allows students to practice vital social skills such as observation, imitation, and self-regulation. Unfortunately, SD during SE is often overshadowed by more commonly known physiological benefits. Researchers of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are encouraged by SE findings which offer alternative methods for learning social skills the students struggle to develop. Examining the social impact of increased SE for these students bolsters the value of SE findings beyond physiological effects, illuminating the complex, often overlooked positive relationship between SD and exercise for students with ASD.

Background It is presently estimated that as much as 10% of emerging adults are at risk for a gambling disorder. The consequences stemming from problematic gambling engagement include increased substance use, mental health disorders, suicidality, financial strain and legal issues. The present study explores whether deficits in specific dimensions of emotion regulation coupled with the motivation to escape negative emotions (i.e., coping motives) increases the likelihood of problem gambling severity, while controlling for variables such as gambling frequency, age, and sex. Methods A sample of 919 emerging adult gamblers (Mage = 21.16 years-old, SD = 2.90, 48.1% female) completed an online survey including an assessment of problematic engagement in gambling over the past year, gambling motivations, and difficulties in emotion regulation. In total, 15.2% and 8.1% of this sample were at moderate or high risk for gambling disorder. Results A series of six moderation analyses revealed that the total models accounted for approximately 37–38% of the variance in problem gambling and that coping motives interacted with less difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior, increased lack of emotional clarity, and increased lack of emotional awareness to create a toxic mixture for problem gambling. Conclusions These findings reveal the importance of considering both psychological factors such as emotion regulation and motivational factors in understanding who is at greatest risk for gambling problems

Psychology and more importantly, school psychology has undergone many changes in French Quebec since the last special issue was published on the subject matter, close to two decades ago. Quebec is a “breeding ground” for psychologists as more than two thirds of Canada’s psychology professionals practice in this province alone. Since the mid 2000’s, a doctoral degree is now required for licensing and registration to the professional order, the Order of Psychologists of Quebec (OPQ). Although this field has since evolved, other aspects of the profession remain unchanged. For one, professional shortages and recruitment challenges (i.e. unrealistic student to psychologist ratios) represent a major obstacle to service provision. Hence, the primary duty of psychologists working in schools remains to perform psychoeducational assessments for coding purposes. Much work and advocacy is still needed to further the practice of school psychology in Quebec. Professional practice, training and, future perspectives of school psychology are further discussed in the current paper.

Social anxiety has received scant attention in studies of schizophrenia and related psychoses. However, some data suggest it may be an obstacle to vocational and functional outcome. This pilot study investigated the feasibility of a group-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBGT) to reduce social anxiety in those at risk for developing psychosis or in the early phase. Twenty-nine patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) or at ultra high risk for developing psychosis or often referred to as at-risk mental state (ARMS) with comorbid social anxiety attended a CBGT intervention weekly for 14 weeks in 90-minute sessions. Baseline, post-treatment, and follow-up ratings of social anxiety were measured using the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, the Social Phobia Inventory, and the Brief Social Phobia Scale. Psychotic symptoms and general psychopathology were also measured before and after the intervention. Trait anxiety is an important predictor of dispositional mindfulness since several symptoms of anxiety controvert key elements of mindfulness, making it more challenging to achieve a mindful state. Moreover, emotion regulation (ER) strategies are important contributors to both anxiety and mindfulness. Cognitive reappraisal has been linked to decreased symptoms of anxiety and identified as an important contributor to mindfulness. Using a cross sectional moderation analysis, the present exploratory study (N = 205 university students, 67.3% female) investigated whether ER strategies moderated the association between trait anxiety and dispositional mindfulness. Participants completed self-report measures online. Greater use of cognitive reappraisal, viewed as an adaptive ER strategy, weakened the negative relation between cognitive anxiety and mindfulness. Additionally, results suggest that infrequent use of emotional suppression, though perceived as a maladaptive strategy, may not compromise reliance on mindful awareness as much in individuals who present with low levels of anxiety (somatic and cognitive). Findings provide insight into the importance of promoting adequate ER strategies more importantly in individuals with moderate to high levels of anxiety as a means to increase mindful awareness and well-being.

Aim In psychotic disorders, a limited number of studies have documented the presence of symptoms of anxiety, especially in first-episode psychosis (FEP). There is a growing interest in better understanding how these symptoms may affect the severity of psychotic symptoms and clinical outcome. This study examined the association between symptoms of anxiety, as measured by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and short-term clinical outcome. We first examined the potential association between anxiety symptom severity among FEP patients and remission. A secondary objective explored the relation between the PANSS single item subscale ‘anxiety’ item and the total score value of the HARS. Method Data were collected on 201 FEP patients divided into remitted and unremitted groups based on clinical data at 6 months. Anxiety ratings were compared between 67 remitted and 99 unremitted patients with the HARS, and for 72 remitted and 103 unremitted patients with the (G2) PANSS. Results A significant interaction Time × Group was observed on the HARS and on the PANSS G2 item. Looking at the two time points specifically, groups did not significantly differ at baseline on either the HARS or the PANSS. At 6 months, these two groups were significantly different on both anxiety rating scores – HARS [t(170) = 3.48, P = 0.001)] and PANSS G2 [t(173) = 2.51, P = 0.013)]. Conclusion Anxiety severity is marked in FEP, and appears to be linked to poor short-term clinical outcome. The PANSS single item (G2) seems to represent a good indicator of anxiety as it significantly correlates with a more systematic measure of anxiety, namely the HARS score. Anxiety severity appears to vary across diagnosis type.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between adherence to antipsychotic medication and working alliance (WA) ratings as reported separately by case manager (CM) and patient in first-episode psychosis (FEP) and to identify whether other factors previously related to adherence influence this relationship. METHODS Adherence was evaluated every month in 81 participants who met criteria for a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, psychotic disorder (affective or nonaffective) and were treated in a specialized early intervention program. Adherence was measured, taking into account information from patient and clinician reports and pill counting. The WA, as assessed by both CM and patient, was assessed using the Working Alliance Inventory. RESULTS The WA was stable during the course of the study as rated by both patient and CM. The "task" domain of WA was the subdomain most significantly correlated to adherence in cross-sectional analysis. The WA as measured by CM at study baseline was a significant predictor of the number of subsequent months with "good" adherence independently of other variables, including adherence at treatment onset (β = 0.011; P = 0.020; 95% confidence interval, 0.002-0.020). However, the WA as measured by patients was not similarly predictive of subsequent adherence (β = 0.003; P = 0.31; 95% confidence interval, -0.003 to 0.010). CONCLUSIONS The CM-rated WA is a significant predictor of future medication adherence in FEP, suggesting that good alliance can improve adherence in this population.

In psychotic disorders, impairments in cognition have been associated with both clinical and functional outcome, while deficits in social cognition have been associated with functional outcome. As an extension to a recent report on neurocognition and short-term clinical outcome in first-episode psychosis (FEP), the current study explored whether social cognitive deficits could also identify poor short-term clinical outcome among FEP patients.We defined the social-cognition domain based on the scores from the Hinting Task and the Four Factor Tests of Social Intelligence. Data were collected in 45 FEP patients and 26 healthy controls. The patients were divided into good- and poor-outcome groups based on clinical data at six months following initiation of treatment. Social cognition was compared among 27 poor-outcome, 18 good-outcome, and 26 healthy-control participants.Outcome groups significantly differed in the social cognition domain (z-scores: poor outcome=-2.0 [SD=1.4]; good outcome=-1.0 [SD=1.0]; p=0.005), with both groups scoring significantly lower than the control group (p0.003). Moreover, outcome groups differed significantly only on the Cartoon Predictions subtest (z-scores: poor outcome=-2.7 [SD=2.7]; good outcome=-0.7 [SD=1.8]; p=0.001) among the five subtests used.Overall, social cognition appears to be compromised in all FEP patients compared to healthy controls. More interestingly, significant differences in social cognitive impairments exist between good and poor short-term clinical outcome groups, with the largest effect found in the Cartoon Predictions subtest.

Studies on attribution biases in schizophrenia have produced mixed results, whereas such biases have been more consistently reported in people with anxiety disorders. Anxiety comorbidities are frequent in schizophrenia, in particular social anxiety disorder, which could influence their patterns of attribution biases. The objective of the present study was thus to determine if individuals with schizophrenia and a comorbid social anxiety disorder (SZ+) show distinct attribution biases as compared with individuals with schizophrenia without social anxiety (SZ−) and healthy controls. Attribution biases were assessed with the Internal, Personal, and Situational Attributions Questionnaire in 41 individual with schizophrenia and 41 healthy controls. Results revealed the lack of the normal externalizing bias in SZ+, whereas SZ− did not significantly differ from healthy controls on this dimension. The personalizing bias was not influenced by social anxiety but was in contrast linked with delusions, with a greater personalizing bias in individuals with current delusions. Future studies on attribution biases in schizophrenia should carefully document symptom presentation, including social anxiety.

Pictorial stimuli are commonly used by scientists to explore central processes; including memory, attention, and language. Pictures that have been collected and put into sets for these purposes often contain visual ambiguities that lead to name disagreement amongst subjects. In the present work, we propose new norms which reflect these sources of name disagreement, and we apply this method to two sets of pictures: the Snodgrass and Vanderwart (S&V) set and the Bank of Standardized Stimuli (BOSS). Naming responses of the presented pictures were classified within response categories based on whether they were correct, incorrect, or equivocal. To characterize the naming strategy where an alternative name was being used, responses were further divided into different sub-categories that reflected various sources of name disagreement. Naming strategies were also compared across the two sets of stimuli. Results showed that the pictures of the S&V set and the BOSS were more likely to elicit alternative specific and equivocal names, respectively. It was also found that the use of incorrect names was not significantly different across stimulus sets but that errors were more likely caused by visual ambiguity in the S&V set and by a misuse of names in the BOSS. Norms for name disagreement presented in this paper are useful for subsequent research for their categorization and elucidation of name disagreement that occurs when choosing visual stimuli from one or both stimulus sets. The sources of disagreement should be examined carefully as they help to provide an explanation of errors and inconsistencies of many concepts during picture naming tasks.

Throughout the last decades, numerous picture data sets have been developed, such as the Snodgrass and Vanderwart (1980) set, and have been normalized for variables such as name and familiarity; however, due to cultural and linguistic differences, norms can vary from one country to another. The effect due specifically to culture has already been demonstrated by comparing samples from different countries where the same language is spoken. On the other hand, it is still not clear how differences between languages may affect norms. The present study explores this issue by collecting and comparing norms on names and many other features from French Canadian speakers and English Canadian speakers living in Montreal, who thus live in similar cultural environments. Norms were collected for the photos of objects from the Bank of Standardized Stimuli (BOSS) by asking participants to name the objects, to categorize them, and to rate their familiarity, visual complexity, object agreement, viewpoint agreement, and manipulability. Names and ratings from the French speakers are available in Appendix A, available in the supplemental materials. The results show that most of the norms are comparable across linguistic groups and also that the ratings given are correlated across linguistic groups. The only significant group differences were found in viewpoint agreement and visual complexity. Overall, there was good concordance between the norms collected from French and English native speakers living in the same cultural setting.

There are currently stimuli with published norms available to study several psychological aspects of language and visual cognitions. Norms represent valuable information that can be used as experimental variables or systematically controlled to limit their potential influence on another experimental manipulation. The present work proposes 480 photo stimuli that have been normalized for name, category, familiarity, visual complexity, object agreement, viewpoint agreement, and manipulability. Stimuli are also available in grayscale, blurred, scrambled, and line-drawn version. This set of objects, the Bank Of Standardized Stimuli (BOSS), was created specifically to meet the needs of scientists in cognition, vision and psycholinguistics who work with photo stimuli.
