Background: Soluble Fas (sFas) plays various roles in carcinogenesis and tumor dissemination by preventing apoptosis via binding to Fas ligand. We analyzed associations of serum sFas levels with the incidence of liver cancer in a prospective case–control study nested in the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study. Methods: A baseline survey was conducted from 1988, with blood samples obtained from 39,242 subjects. Patients diagnosed with liver cancer were regarded as cases. Two or three controls were selected and matched for sex, age, and geographic area. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate ORs for cancer incidence associated with sFas. Results: This study contained 86 cases and 249 controls. After controlling for alcohol intake, body mass index, smoking, and hepatitis viral infection, participants with high sFas showed elevated risk of cancer (Ptrend = 0.003) and the third tertile of sFas showed a higher risk compared with the first tertile [OR, 3.53; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.28–9.69]. In hepatocellular carcinoma, high sFas was associated with elevated risk (Ptrend < 0.001). In men and the elderly, subjects in the highest tertiles showed higher cancer risk. Limiting subjects to those followed for 3 years, high sFas was related to liver cancer risk (Ptrend = 0.033) and the third tertile showed a higher risk compared with the first (OR, 2.94; 95% CI, 0.94–9.14). Conclusions: High serum sFas may be related to future risk of liver cancer. Impact: Our findings highlight this biomarker for further analysis in pooled investigations with different/larger prospective cohorts.

Heyde's syndrome is a disease in which patients with aortic stenosis (AS) bleed from angiodysplasia. An 80-year-old woman with a history of severe AS was referred to our hospital with melena and anemia. The patient underwent jejunal resection after repeated blood transfusions. A pathological examination revealed angiodysplasia, and the patient's plasma lacked high-molecular-weight von Willebrand factor (VWF) multimers, leading to the diagnosis of Heyde's syndrome. The patient underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) one year after the diagnosis, and the VWF index recovered. This is a valuable case in which the pathological analysis of angiodysplasia associated with Heyde's syndrome was possible.

The tumor microenvironment plays an essential role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). We recently reported that crosstalk between CRC cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) via serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) promotes invasion by T1 CRCs. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the role of neutrophils in early CRCs.Immunohistochemical analysis of CD66b, chemokine CXC motif ligand 8 (CXCL8 or interleukin-8, IL-8) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) was performed using primary T1 CRCs (n = 49). The HL-60 human promyelocytic leukemia cell line and THP-1 human monocytic leukemia cell line were used to obtain neutrophil-like and macrophage-like cells, respectively. Boyden chamber assays were used to analyze cell migration and invasion, and quantitative RT-PCR was used to analyze gene expression.Immunohistochemical analysis revealed accumulation of neutrophils at the SAA1-positive invasive front of T1 CRCs. Experiments using HL-60 cells suggested that treatment with SAA1 induced neutrophil migration and expression of CXCL8 and MMP-9 in neutrophils and that neutrophils promote CRC cell migration and invasion. Immunohistochemistry confirmed accumulation of CXCL8- or MMP-9-positive neutrophils at the SAA1-positive invasive front of T1 CRCs. Moreover, co-culture experiments using CRC, THP-1 and HL-60 cells suggested that CRC cells activated by macrophages upregulate CXCL8 and MMP-9 in neutrophils.Our results suggest that interplay between macrophages and CRC cells leads to recruitment of neutrophils to the invasive front of T1 CRCs and that SAA1 secreted by CRC cells activate neutrophils to promote invasion.

Impact: Our findings highlight this important biomarker for further analysis in large prospective cohorts and pooled investigation with other cohorts.

An 86-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with anemia. She had never experienced symptoms of serositis. Colonoscopy revealed colitis with erosions and a friable mucosa. First, she was diagnosed with unclassified inflammatory bowel disease (IBD-U). We suspected familial Mediterranean fever as a differential diagnosis of IBD-U, and MEFV gene analysis showed heterozygosity for Exon2 R202Q. The patient was treated with colchicine 0.5 mg. After 4 months, a follow-up colonoscopy showed remarkable improvement of the mucosal inflammation throughout the entire colon. MEFV gene-associated enterocolitis responding to colchicine may be observed in patients with IBD-U and elucidating the role of MEFV gene mutations in intestinal inflammation is a future challenge.

The future Super-FRS separator-spectrometer at FAIR will provide rare-isotope beams for key experiments in nuclear structure, astrophysics and nuclear reactions. The Super-FRS will use large-aperture magnets, which is important for the acceptance of nuclear reaction products with a large transverse and longitudinal emittance. In the standard ion-optical separator mode, magnetic rigidity analysis in combination with atomic energy-loss will be performed for clean isotopic spatial separation, once in the Pre-Separator and second in the Main-Separator. New ion-optical developments, prepared for different categories of experiments, are presented in this article. The operating modes described in the early publications of the project are updated in the first part of the paper. In the second part, special ion-optical modes mainly for the experiments of the Super-FRS Experiment Collaboration are discussed. This collaboration is the succession of the FRS Collaboration which has concentrated on separator-spectrometer experiments with the present facility at GSI since 1990.

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 is a potent mitogen, but IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 inhibits IGF1. To elucidate the relationship between both IGF1 and IGFBP and the risk of tumorigenesis, the association between IGF1 and IGFBP3 serum levels and of malignant tumor incidence was investigated in a prospective case–control study nested in the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study. A baseline survey was started in 1988–1990, 110,585 subjects were enrolled, and 35% of participants donated blood samples. Those who had been diagnosed with malignant tumors by 1997 were considered cases. The analysis involved 1,349 cases and 4,012 controls. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate ORs for cancer incidence associated with IGF-related molecules. After controlling for alcohol intake, body mass index (BMI), and smoking, participants with high total-IGFBP3 and free-IGFBP3, which is estimated by the molar difference of (IGFBP3 − IGF1), had a risk of future neoplasms (Ptrend = 0.014 and 0.009, respectively), but those with IGF1 did not. People in the second to fifth quintiles had a lower risk than those in the first quintile (ORs 0.676–0.736 and 0.657–0.870, respectively). Limiting subjects to those followed for 3 years weakened the negative associations of total- and free-IGFBP3, whereas a positive relationship of free-IGF1, which was estimated by the molar ratio of IGF1/IGFBP3, was seen (Ptrend = 0.004, 0.002, and 0.013, respectively). After controlling for alcohol intake, smoking, BMI, and diabetes mellitus, the results were confirmed. These findings suggest that serum IGF1 and IGFBP3 are related to future risk of malignant neoplasms.

International audience; Spectroscopy of an unbound nucleus $^{17}$C was performed using the SAMURAI spectrometer at RIBF of RIKEN. Six resonances were observed for the $^{16}$C+n system with relative energies of 0.52, 0.77, 1.36, 1.91, 2.22 and 3.20 MeV. The excitation energies ($E_x$) of the observed resonances were deduced, by taking into account the states of the $^{16}$C fragments identified by coincident $\gamma $ rays, as $E_x$=(3.02), 1.51, (3.86), 2.65, (4.72) and 3.94 MeV. The orbital angular momenta of the two observed states in $^{17}$C at $E_x$=2.65 and 3.94 MeV were determined as 1 by comparing parallel momentum distributions with theoretical predictions.

Neutron-rich Pm ( Z = 61 ) isotopes were studied by delayed γ -ray spectroscopy at RIBF, RIKEN Nishina Center using the in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon U 238 beam. A cluster-type Ge detector array, EURICA, was used to measure the delayed γ rays from stopped ions. Isomeric γ decays were observed in Pm 159 and Pm 161 with half-lives of 4.97(12) μ s and 0.79(4) μ s , respectively. Level schemes for Pm 159 and Pm 161 were constructed in this study. The isomeric states of Pm 159 and Pm 161 could be interpreted as two quasiparticle excitations of neutrons with the configurations of ν ( 7 / 2 [ 633 ] ⊗ 5 / 2 [ 523 ] ) and ν ( 7 / 2 [ 633 ] ⊗ 1 / 2 [ 521 ] ) , respectively. They are analogous to the isomers that have been observed systematically in other even-mass N = 98 and N = 100 isotones in this region. A projected shell model calculation was performed and it reproduced the order of three-quasiparticle states only if new Nilsson parameters with an N -dependent spin-orbit interaction were used. This work demonstrates that the strength of spin-orbit interactions in standard Nilsson parameters needs to be modified to study the properties of neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei around A = 165 , and provides new evidence supporting the existence of the deformed N = 98 subshell gap in odd-mass nuclei for the first time.

A new-generation radioactive-isotope (RI) beam facility, RI Beam Factory (RIBF), has been operating at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science since 2007. A large variety of RI beams have been produced using the BigRIPS in-flight RI separator. To manage the large amount of data regarding RI-beam production, we have been developing a database system of RI beams produced with the BigRIPS separator. The RI-beam database contains data on the production cross sections and yields along with other detailed experimental conditions. The graphical user interface has been developed as a web application. The RI-beam database system is indispensable when considering RI-beam production procedures, optimizing BigRIPS setting, and implementing particle identification in isotope separation. Further, it is useful in discussing models and formula of the cross section.

BigRIPS is a powerful two-stage in-flight separator for the research with exotic nuclei studied in frontier experiments since more than a decade. The ion-optical system is very versatile due to the multi-stage structure of BigRIPS combined with the ZeroDegree spectrometer or the Superconducting Ring Cyclotron (SRC). Various optical modes can be flexibly realized according to the purpose of experiments. Two categories of developments are presented here. One is a new operating mode of BigRIPS aiming at higher ion-optical resolving power. BigRIPS itself has a two-stage structure. Spatial isotope separation is made at both the first and second stages. In the standard operating mode of BigRIPS, at the second stage the two spatial separations with energy degraders are subtractive in their resolving powers. Here, we present the additive mode. With the resulting increased spatial separation power, the isotopic background can be substantially reduced. Higher ion-optical resolving powers of the first and second BigRIPS degrader stages are also investigated with the goals to reduce further the background and to yield access to new isotopes of heavier elements. The other development is a dispersion-matched system with BigRIPS for high-resolution spectrometer experiments. The BigRIPS and ZeroDegree spectrometer are presently two independent, coupled achromatic systems. A new dispersion-matched mode of BigRIPS and ZeroDegree will enable novel experiments. For high-resolution spectroscopy experiments with high-intensity light projectiles, SRC and BigRIPS can be operated as a dispersion-matched system. The described different ion-optical developments are a base for a new category of experiments exploring exotic nuclei and mesic atoms. Characteristic future experiments with these new ion-optical developments are exemplified in this report.

The separation of heavy RI beams, produced from an 238U primary beam using the fragment separator BigRIPS, was considered by taking into account the charge-state change of the RI beam in beam-line materials. If the charge-state combination of the He-like and fully-stripped ions at the first and second dipole magnets is selected for the 208Rn beam, respectively, it is found that the Li-like or Be-like ions are required at the first dipole magnet for major contaminants which are the in-flight fission fragments of 238U. Because of the low probability of these charge states, the fission fragments are expected to be much suppressed. The experiment of the heavy-RI beam production was performed at RIKEN RI beam factory (RIBF). The fission fragments were successfully eliminated from the RI beam for the first time at RIBF. The RI beam with a narrow slit setting was simulated by applying software gates on the positions measured at two achromatic foci. A purity of 25% was obtained for 208Rn in the simulated RI beam.

Background/Aims: Fundic gland polyps (FGPs), hyperplastic polyps (HPs), and xanthomas (XTs) are common benign gastric lesions that can be diagnosed by endoscopic appearance alone in most cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between gastric cancer and these benign lesions. Methods: Two expert endoscopists reviewed a series of gastroscopy images. FGPs, HPs, and XTs were diagnosed by endoscopic appearance, whereas all gastric cancers were confirmed pathologically. Results: Of the 1,227 patients reviewed, 114 (9.3%) had a concurrent or past history of gastric cancer. The overall prevalences of FGPs, HPs and XTs were 9.4%, 6.3% and 14.2%, respectively. HPs and XTs coexisted in 1.6% of patients, whereas other combinations were rarer. XTs were observed in 39.3% and 11.5% of patients with and without gastric cancer, respectively (p

Submucosal invasion and lymph node metastasis are important issues affecting treatment options for early colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we aimed to unravel the molecular mechanism underlying the invasiveness of early CRCs. We performed RNA‐sequencing (RNA‐seq) with poorly differentiated components (PORs) and their normal counterparts isolated from T1 CRC tissues and detected significant upregulation of serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) in PORs. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that SAA1 was specifically expressed in PORs at the invasive front of T1b CRCs. Upregulation of SAA1 in CRC cells promoted cell migration and invasion. Coculture experiments using CRC cell lines and THP‐1 cells suggested that interleukin 1β (IL‐1β) produced by macrophages induces SAA1 expression in CRC cells. Induction of SAA1 and promotion of CRC cell migration and invasion by macrophages were inhibited by blocking IL‐1β. These findings were supported by immunohistochemical analysis of primary T1 CRCs showing accumulation of M1‐like/M2‐like macrophages at SAA1‐positive invasive front regions. Moreover, SAA1 produced by CRC cells stimulated upregulation of matrix metalloproteinase‐9 in macrophages. Our data suggest that tumor‐associated macrophages at the invasive front of early CRCs promote cancer cell migration and invasion through induction of SAA1 and that SAA1 may be a predictive biomarker and a useful therapeutic target., We identified that serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) is upregulated in the poorly differentiated regions at the invasive front of T1 stage colorectal cancer (CRC). We found that tumor‐associated macrophages accumulated at the invasive front, where they stimulated SAA1 upregulation in CRC cells via interleukin 1β and promoted CRC cell migration and invasion. We also show that SAA1 secreted by CRC cells stimulates matrix metalloproteinase‐9 upregulation in macrophages at the invasive front.

We report here the results of a study of the $\beta$ decay of the proton-rich Ge isotopes, $^{60}$Ge and $^{62}$Ge, produced in an experiment at the RIKEN Nishina Center. We have improved our knowledge of the half-lives of $^{62}$Ge (73.5(1) ms), $^{60}$Ge (25.0(3) ms) and its daughter nucleus, $^{60}$Ga (69.4(2) ms). We measured individual $\beta$-delayed proton and $\gamma$ emissions and their related branching ratios. Decay schemes and absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. A total $\beta$-delayed proton-emission branching ratio of 67(3)% has been obtained for $^{60}$Ge. New information has been obtained on the energy levels populated in $^{60}$Ga and on the 1/2$^-$ excited state in the $\beta p$ daughter $^{59}$Zn. We extracted a ground state to ground state feeding of 85.3(3)% for the decay of $^{62}$Ge. Eight new $\gamma$ lines have been added to the de-excitation of levels populated in the $^{62}$Ga daughter.

15 pags., 10 figs., 4 tabs., Newly observed decay schemes of the nuclei Sb137 and Sb138 are reported. The neutron-rich Sb isotopes were produced by the in-flight fragmentation of a U238 primary beam with an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon. Several new excited states of Te137 with tentatively assigned spin-parities of (5/2-), (9/2-), and (7/2) have been established which play an important role in the evolution of neutron levels beyond N=82. The study of the ß decay of Sb138 led to a considerable extension of the level scheme of Te138 including the identification of several nonyrast states. 6 pags., 4 figs., 2 tabs., The change of the shell structure in atomic nuclei, so-called “nuclear shell evolution”, occurs due to changes of major configurations through particle-hole excitations inside one nucleus, as well as due to variation of the number of constituent protons or neutrons. We have investigated how the shell evolution affects Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions that dominate the β decay in the region below 132Sn using the newly obtained experimental data on a long-lived isomer in 127Ag. The T1/2=67.5(9) ms isomer has been identified with a spin and parity of (27/2+) at an excitation energy of 1942−20+14 keV, and found to decay via an internal transition of an E3 character, which competes with the dominant β-decay branches towards the high-spin states in 127Cd. 11 pags., 8 figs., 2 tabs., The β decay of the semimagic Sn isotopes Sn136,137,138 has been studied at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The first experimental information on excited states was obtained for Sb137 while, in the case of Sb136, the established excitation scheme could be extended by ten previously unidentified levels. In the decay of the most-neutron-rich isotope Sn138, two γ rays were observed for the first time. The new experimental results, in combination with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations, provide the first information with respect to the evolution of the 0g7/2 and 1d5/2 proton single-particle states with increasing neutron number beyond N=84., We thank the staff of the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator complex for providing high-intensity beams to the experiment. We performed the first direct mass measurements of neutron-rich scandium, titanium, and vanadium isotopes around the neutron number 40 at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory using the time-of-flight magnetic-rigidity technique. The atomic mass excesses of ^{58-60}Sc, ^{60-62}Ti, and ^{62-64}V were measured for the first time. The experimental results show that the two-neutron separation energies in the vicinity of ^{62}Ti increase compared to neighboring nuclei. This shows that the masses of Ti isotopes near N=40 are affected by the Jahn-Teller effect. Therefore, a development of Jahn-Teller stabilization appears below the Cr isotopes, and the systematics in Sc, Ti, and V isotopes suggest that ^{62}Ti is located close to the peak of the Jahn-Teller effect.

We report on new γ-ray spectroscopy results from β decays of In99 and Sn101. 30 new γ rays were observed following the β decay of In99, and inconsistencies in the literature with respect to the γ rays following the β decay of Sn101 were addressed with two confirmed cases and two new transitions. The experimental γ-ray energies, intensities, and coincidence relationships are discussed with shell model calculations, where theoretical β-decay branching ratios from the parent nuclei and γ-ray cascades of excited states from the daughter nuclei were combined to generate hypothetical βγ spectra and βγγ coincidence matrices. The most intense β-delayed γ-ray branches in both Cd99 and In101 were well reproduced with this approach, and several γ rays were assigned to new excited states based on their good agreement with shell model predictions.

We report a rare case of undifferentiated-type intramucosal gastric cancer that occurred in the fornix of the stomach without Helicobacter pylori infection, which consisted mainly of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. A 49-year-old man visited our hospital for a follow-up endoscopic examination of a small depressed lesion of the gastric fornix detected by surveillance esophagogastroduodenoscopy. On magnifying endoscopy with blue laser imaging, the depressed lesion (approximately 10 mm in diameter) was regarded as undifferentiated-type early gastric cancer that proved to be a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma by histological examination of biopsied specimens. The cancerous lesion was successfully treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection and microscopically showed an intramucosal cancer that invaded the whole mucosal layer with predominant growth of a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma component. The patient status was verified as Helicobacter pylori-naive according to the strict diagnostic criteria, thereby confirming this case as an undifferentiated-type Helicobacter pylori-uninfected gastric cancer. Helicobacter pylori-uninfected intramucosal poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma occurring in the gastric fornix has not been previously reported.

The heaviest bound isotope of boron ^{19}B has been investigated using exclusive measurements of its Coulomb dissociation, into ^{17}B and two neutrons, in collisions with Pb at 220 MeV/nucleon. Enhanced electric dipole (E1) strength is observed just above the two-neutron decay threshold with an integrated E1 strength of B(E1)=1.64±0.06(stat)±0.12(sys) e^{2} fm^{2} for relative energies below 6 MeV. This feature, known as a soft E1 excitation, provides the first firm evidence that ^{19}B has a prominent two-neutron halo. Three-body calculations that reproduce the energy spectrum indicate that the valence neutrons have a significant s-wave configuration and exhibit a dineutronlike correlation.

The $\beta$-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei $^{134-139}$Sn, $^{134-142}$Sb, $^{137-144}$Te, $^{140-146}$I, $^{142-148}$Xe, $^{145-151}$Cs, $^{148-153}$Ba, $^{151-155}$La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of $^{238}$U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of $r$ process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ($A$ $\approx$ 130) peak.

The BigRIPS in-flight fragment separator in the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory project has been operated for nine years. Intense beams of heavy ions up to uranium with the beam power of 1-13 kW and the energy of 230-45 MeV/nucleon were used to produce the radioactive isotope beams by the BigRIPS fragment separator. The first superconducting triplet quadrupoles (STQ1) is in close proximity of the production target in the BigRIPS fragment separator and has been exposed to high radiation. The STQ1 consists of three air-core NbTi coils, wound by the wet-winding method, assembled in the liquid-helium bath cryostat. Based on the operation records of the superconducting magnet and its cryogenic system, the accumulated dose to the coils is evaluated to be order of 1 MGy. The observed impurities in the helium gas, such as tritium and hydrocarbons in the STQ1 cryostat, are presented as a possible radiation effect. Based on the excitation data of training ramps, we discuss the movement of the coils and a possible degradation of coils. No distinct degradation in the coil performance can be observed after nine years of operation.

Aim Interval gastric cancers (IGC) are defined as those diagnosed after negative results of endoscopy carried out within the past 10 years. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of IGC and the natural history of gastric cancer (GC) from a retrospective view of endoscopic images of older patients with IGC. Methods We retrospectively reviewed endoscopic images of 240 patients with GC who were aged >60 years. We compared past endoscopic images with newer ones, in which GC was diagnosed. IGC were classified into two categories: missed cancers and new cancers. Results Of the 240 patients with GC, 32 had past endoscopic images that qualified for a precise review. A total of 14 cases involved new cancers, whereas 18 involved missed cancers. Most of the IGC were stage I for at least 2 years; however, a small subset was unresectable at >2 years after a negative endoscopy. Furthermore, the rate of endoscopic treatment was significantly higher for IGC compared with that for non-IGC. Conclusions In people aged >60 years, most IGC remain in an early stage for at least 2 years; however, at >2 years after a negative endoscopy, some are unresectable. These results suggest that most early-stage GC will not develop into advanced cancers within 2 years; thus, a 2-year interval might be within the permissible range for patients with negative endoscopy results for any lesions. A 62-year-old man with a chief complaint of dysphagia visited our hospital. Enhanced computed tomography showed the tumor near the duodenal wall and lymphadenopathy in the left supraclavicular fossa and para-aortic lymph node. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed an ulcer accompanied with a fistula in the anterior wall of duodenal bulb, suggesting that the tumor penetrated into duodenal wall. Biopsy from the lymph node in the left supraclavicular fossa indicated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Although chemotherapy was planned, massive arterial bleeding occurred from the part of duodenal penetration. Endoscopic hemostasis was unsuccessfully performed. Therefore, we performed transcathether arterial embolization for hemostasis. After the procedure, the patient received six cycles of chemotherapy, and he achieved complete response. He has been alive 5 years without recurrence. There were many cases of gastrointestinal bleeding from primary gastrointestinal lymphomas, while there were few cases with nodal involvement by malignant lymphoma resulting in bleeding from gastrointestinal tract. We herein report a case of duodenal bleeding by nodal involvement of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with review of literature.

Background and study aims Ischemic proctitis is a rare disease and comprises 2 % to 5 % of cases of ischemic colitis, because the rectum has abundant blood supply and rich collaterals. Herein, we report a case of a 73-year-old male patient with a pronounced rectal stricture caused by ischemic proctitis resulting from an abdominal aortic rupture and treated by endoscopic balloon dilation therapy. To date, only 3 cases of rectal stricture related to ischemic proctitis including our case have been reported, and this is the first case of rectal stricture related to ischemic proctitis, which was successfully treated by endoscopic balloon dilation.

Spallation reaction study has been performed for the long-lived fission products 137Cs, 90Sr and 107Pd. Isotopic cross sections on proton and deuteron were obtained by using the inverse kinematics technique at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. It was found that the deuteron-induced cross sections are larger than the proton-induced ones for the light-mass products. The experimental data were compared with the SPACS semi-empirical parameterization and a theoretical calculation including both the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation models by the PHITS transport code. It was found that the spallation reaction could be a promising mechanism for the transmutation of 137Cs and 90Sr due to the large total cross section.

In-flight fission of a 345 MeV per nucleon 238U primary beam on a 2 mm thick 9Be target has been used to produce and study the decays of a range of neutron-rich nuclei centred around the doubly mid-shell nucleus 170Dy at the RIBF Facility, RIKEN, Japan. The produced secondary fragments of interest were identified eventby- event using the BigRIPS separator. The fragments were implanted into the WAS3ABI position sensitive silicon active stopper which allowed pixelated correlations between implants and their subsequent β-decay. Discrete γ-ray transitions emitted following decays from either metastable states or excited states populated following beta decay were identified using the 84 coaxial high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors of the EURICA spectrometer, which was complemented by 18 additional cerium-doped lanthanum bromide (LaBr3)

Tumor angiogenesis is an important therapeutic target in colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to identify novel genes associated with angiogenesis in CRC. Using RNA sequencing analysis in normal and tumor endothelial cells (TECs) isolated from primary CRC tissues, we detected frequent upregulation of adipocyte enhancer‐binding protein 1 (AEBP1) in TECs. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that AEBP1 is upregulated in TECs and stromal cells in CRC tissues. Quantitative RT‐PCR analysis showed that there is little or no AEBP1 expression in CRC cell lines, but that AEBP1 is well expressed in vascular endothelial cells. Levels of AEBP1 expression in Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were upregulated by tumor conditioned medium derived from CRC cells or by direct coculture with CRC cells. Knockdown of AEBP1 suppressed proliferation, migration, and in vitro tube formation by HUVECs. In xenograft experiments, AEBP1 knockdown suppressed tumorigenesis and microvessel formation. Depletion of AEBP1 in HUVECs downregulated a series of genes associated with angiogenesis or endothelial function, including aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and periostin (POSTN), suggesting that AEBP1 might promote angiogenesis through regulation of those genes. These results suggest that upregulation of AEBP1 contributes to tumor angiogenesis in CRC, which makes AEBP1 a potentially useful therapeutic target., We identified that adipocyte enhancer‐binding protein 1 (AEBP1) is upregulated in tumor endothelial cells in primary colorectal cancers. Upregulation of AEBP1 in vascular endothelial cells promotes cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. We also found that AEBP1 might mediate tumor angiogenesis through regulating expression of angiogenesis‐related genes, including aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and periostin (POSTN).

Isotope-production cross sections for p-, d-, and C-induced spallation reactions on Nb93 at 113 MeV/nucleon were measured using the inverse-kinematics method employing secondary targets of CH2, CD2, and C. The measured cross sections for Mo90, Nb90, Y86,88 produced by p-induced reactions were found to be consistent with those measured by the conventional activation method. We performed benchmark tests of the reaction models INCL-4.6, JQMD, and JQMD-2.0 implemented in the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) and of the nuclear data libraries JENDL-4.0/HE, TENDL-2017, and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The model calculations also showed generally good agreement with the measured isotope-production cross sections for p-, d-, and C-induced reactions. It also turns out that, among the three nuclear data libraries, JENDL-4.0/HE provides the best agreement with the measured data for the p-induced reactions. We compared the present Nb93 data with the Zr93 data, that were measured previously by the same inverse kinematics method (Kawase et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2017, 093D03 (2017)2050-391110.1093/ptep/ptx110), with particular attention to the effect of neutron-shell closure on isotope production in p- and d-induced spallation reactions. The isotopic distributions of the measured production cross sections in the Zr93 data showed noticeable jumps at neutron number N=50 in the isotopic chains of ΔZ=0 and -1, whereas no such jump appeared in isotopic chain of ΔZ=0 in the Nb93 data. From INCL-4.6 + GEM calculations, we found that the jump formed in the evaporation process is smeared out by the intranuclear cascade component in Nb91 produced by the Nb93(p,p2n) and (d,d2n) reactions on Nb93. Moreover, for Nb93, the distribution of the element-production cross sections as a function of the change in proton number ΔZ is shifted to smaller ΔZ than for Zr93, because the excited Nb prefragments generated by the cascade process are more likely to emit protons than the excited Zr prefragments, due to the smaller proton-separation energies of the Nb isotopes.

Previously unknown associated gamma-ray decay energies are reported for each nuclide, and through evaluating the intensity of the 2+ → 0+ E2 transition in the even-even palladium daughter nuclei, 120,122,124Pd, from the beta-tagged gamma-ray spectra an upper or lower limit of beta-delayed neutron emission is deduced for each nuclei. A record number of ^{100}Sn nuclei was detected and new isotopic species toward the proton dripline were discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Decay spectroscopy was performed with the high-efficiency detector arrays WAS3ABi and EURICA. Both the half-life and the β-decay end point energy of ^{100}Sn were measured more precisely than the literature values. The value and the uncertainty of the resulting strength for the pure 0^{+}→1^{+} Gamow-Teller decay was improved to B_{GT}=4.4_{-0.7}^{+0.9}. A discrimination between different model calculations was possible for the first time, and the level scheme of ^{100}In is investigated further.

The β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich 123;125Ag isotopes is investigated at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN and the long-predicted 1/2¯ β-emitting isomers in 123;125Ag are identified for the first time. With the new experimental results, the systematic trend of energy spacing between the lowest 9/2+ and 1/2¯ levels is extended in Ag isotopes up to N = 78, providing a clear signal for the reduction of the Z = 40 subshell gap in Ag towards N = 82. Shellmodel calculations with the state-of-the-art VMU plus M3Y spin-orbit interaction give a satisfactory description of the low-lying states in 123;125Ag. The tensor force is found to play a crucial role in the evolution of the size of the Z = 40 subshell gap. The observed inversion of the single particle levels around 123Ag can be well interpreted in terms of the monopole shift of the π1g9/2 orbitals mainly caused by the increasing occupation of ʋ1h11/2 orbitals.

BACKGROUND AND AIM Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1) is a potent mitogen and is inhibited by IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP3). High serum IGF1 and low IGFBP3 are associated with increased risk of several carcinomas. Here, we assessed the relationship of these peptides with the risk of gastrointestinal malignancies, in a prospective case-control study nested in the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study. METHODS The analysis involved 916 cases who had been diagnosed as gastrointestinal malignancies (C15-25) and 2306 controls. To estimate odds ratios for incidence of malignancies associated with these levels, a conditional logistic model was used. A decay spectroscopy experiment on proton-rich nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly magic Sn100 was carried out at RIKEN Nishina Center. More than 20 nuclei with 43≤Z≤50 and N≤51, produced by fragmentation reactions were investigated via analyses of β-decay, βp-decay, and subsequent γ-ray data. Owing to higher statistics, the precision on the half-lives of many of the ground states and isomers was improved. β-decay endpoint energies of 11 states in 8 nuclei were measured for the first time, and the corresponding QEC and excitation energies were generally consistent with various mass models. Many β-delayed proton emission branching ratios were measured either for the first time or with higher precision compared to literature values, and some of them differed by more than 2σ. Many of the large discrepancies were associated with nuclei with long-lived isomeric states, highlighting large systematic uncertainties involved in these measurements. Twenty-five new γ rays were observed, and ten new states are proposed with unambiguous excitation energies, spins, and parities. Most of the energies of the excited states were consistent within 300 keV or 20%, whichever was greater, compared to shell model predictions in the proton/neutron (p1/2,g9/2) model space assuming a Sr76 core. A signature of a new (1/2-) isomer in Cd97 with T1/2=0.73(7) s was found, in good agreement with shell model predictions.
