Cinnamomum balansae H. Lec. is an endemic forest tree species of Vietnam. The species has valuable essential oil and timber used for furniture. Growing this species has a high potential for poverty reduction in mountainous areas. Therefore, the effects of storage and pre-sowing treatment on seed germination of C. balansae were studied. Three treatments of seed storage included in a refrigerator at 5oC, room condition, and moisture sand. Three temperature levels for pre-sowing treatment included 30oC, 40oC, and 50oC waters. The results indicated that seeds stored in a refrigerator at 5oC had the highest germination rate of 75.7% after 15 days. However, the rate was still lower than the control (84.3%) by sowing seeds immediately after collecting from mother trees. The longer storage duration led to a lower seed germination rate in all three treatments. Seeds treated in 30oC water for 6 hours had the highest germination rate (84%). While seed germination reduced with increased temperature. In conclusion, seeds of C. balansae must be sown right after collecting from mother trees. Before sowing to the sand bed, seeds should be treated by soaking in 30oC water for 6 hours.

An ecological understanding of natural forests after anthropogenic intervention is important for sustainable forest management. This study analyzed the overstory characteristics (species composition, growth, and diameter distribution) and regeneration (species richness, density, and height distribution) in natural limestone forests in Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam. Data were collected in nine study plots established in selective-logged (SLF), clear-cut (CCF), and unlogged (UF) forests. Results indicated that the overstory characteristics of SLF and CCF were lower than that of UF (species richness was 33 in UF, 20 in SLF, and 16 in CCF; DBH was 20.6 ±13.7 cm in UF, 16.9 ±9.7 cm in SLF, and 10.5 ±3.8 cm in CCF; Basal area was 38.2 m2 ha-1 in UF, 24.0 m2 ha-1 in SLF, and 11.4 m2 ha-1 in CCF). For regeneration, species richness also varied from UF (25) to SLF (13) and CCF (5), while seedling density reversely increased. We concluded that a 20-year restoration was insufficient for artificially disturbed forests to recover their ecological functions, regardless of logging intensities and techniques applied.

This study mapped potential areas for planting golden camellias in Cao Bang province, North Vietnam. Natural conditions (elevation above sea level, annual precipitation, and annual air temperature), where 6 golden camellia species (Camellia impressinervis, C. kirinoi, C. megasepala, C. tuyenquangensis, C. hamyenensis, and C. tienii) naturally distribute, were used for mapping. Three map layers (topography, precipitation, and air temperature) were used. Each main condition was classified into 3 levels for planting, “not suitable”, “suitable”, and “very suitable”. The results indicated that 1,970 ha, accounting for 0.3 % of the total land area of Cao Bang province, was classified as “very suitable” for planting golden camellias. “Suitable” areas counted for 62.7 %, and “not suitable” areas accounted for 37 % of the total land area, respectively. Mapping suitable planting areas is the 1st step for the successful planting of any species. It is recommended that golden camellias should be first planted in very suitable areas, after which planting may be extended to some suitable areas.

Soil provides nutrients, water, and growing space for plants, and thus is the basis for life on earth. Soil nutrient availability impacts productivity of terrestrial ecosystems i.e. forest. However, support for this phenomenon in the tropics remains elusive. In this study, the effects of soil properties including texture, organic matter and nutrients on production of Acacia hybrid and A. mangium plantations in Northeast Vietnam were studied. Thirtythree sample plots of 500 m2 (20 m × 25 m) each were established in plantations of 1–14 years old for measuring stem diameter at breast height and height for all Acacia trees. In each plot, a 0–30 cm depth soil sample was taken for analyzing soil texture, organic matter, and nutrients. While allometry was used to estimate standing volume (production) of all measured stems. The results indicated that both species had rapid growth until 8th year after planting, then growth speed decreases as age increasing. The ratio of loam particles in soil controls production of both species, as higher loam ratios lead to lower production in terms of the standing volume. While higher phosphorous availability in the soil will lead to higher production of A. mangium but not A. hybrid. There weren’t any relationships between production and soil nitrogen and potassium for both species. It is concluded that A. hybrid and A. mangium should be logged at the age earlier than 8 years old for pulpwood to maximize production, rapid reinvestment, and benefit return. Fertilizing phosphorus to acacia plantations should be conducted to increase production, while potassium and nitrogen should not be applied.

Background: Anoectochilus orchids have been widely used as medicine. However, it has been overharvested in nature because of high commercial values. This study aims at identifying distribution ranges and ecological characteristics of Anoectochilus orchids serving for sustainable development and describing traditional uses by ethnic people in Lai Chau Province, North Vietnam. Methods: Twenty-one plots of 100 m2 each (10 m × 10 m) were established for ecological survey and stand structures were analyzed for vegetation characteristics. While interviewing was applied to gather information on harvesting method, marketing, and medicinal uses. Results: Three Anoectochilus orchids (A. lanceolatus, A. calcareus, and A. setaceus) were found in Lai Chau Province, North Vietnam. These species distribute in both evergreen old-growth and secondary broadleaved forests, and mixed broadleaf-bamboo forest on the elevations of 996–2,134 m. They grow in forests with a high canopy cover of 67 m2 canopy area/ 100 m2 land and high cover (> 90% land) of low vegetation (< 2 m tall). It is believed that using the whole plant of Anoectochilus can treat hypertension and diabetes mellitus and improve the development of underdeveloped children. The folk uses include soaking in alcohol and boiled water for daily drinks like green tea, and consuming as a vegetable. The best harvesting season is during Autumn–Winter and fresh product is mainly marketed with the price of up to 100 U$D/1 kg fresh mass. Conclusion: A. lanceolatus, A. calcareus and A. setaceus are potential forest herbs for poverty reduction to ethnic communities in North Vietnam. The natural populations have been reduced remarkably because of overharvesting. Growing techniques are an urgent need for the conservation and sustainable development of such valuable orchids.

Carbon input to forest ecosystem is mainly from Net Primary Production (NPP), therefore estimating NPP becomes important to understand the global carbon cycle. In this study, allometry for aboveground biomass increment (ΔAGB) and litter trap technique for litterfall (LF) were used for estimating aboveground NPP in Acacia hybrid plantation, Northeast Vietnam. The experiment was conducted in a plot of 300 m2 (15×20 m) established in a 21 month old plantation and conducted in a duration of one year. Data were collected in 3 month intervals with a total of five field-measurements. The results indicated that LF and ΔAGB were seasonally dependent. Litterfall was highest (3.38 g m-2 day-1) during September-January (winter) and lowest (0.61 g m-2 day-1) during March-June (early summer). While ΔAGB was highest (7.7 g m-2 day-1) during June-September (summer) and lowest (2.3 g m-2 day-1) during January-March (winter). Total LF was 7.27 tones ha-1 year-1 and ΔAGB was 18.94 tones ha-1 year-1. The total aboveground NPP of Acacia hybrid plantation was 26.31 tones ha-1 year-1. It is concluded that LF plays an important role in soil nutrient cycling in Acacia hybrid plantation.

One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global ground-sourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are ∼73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). These findings highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to anthropogenic changes in land use and climate, which disproportionately threaten rare species and thus, global tree richness., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 119 (6), ISSN:0027-8424, ISSN:1091-6490

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers. Fineroots (≤ 2 mm diameter) are dynamic components of the forest ecosystems and play important role in water and nutrient acquisition in forests. These roots are sensitive to forest fertilization and therefore, the response of fineroots to nutrient application would provide better understanding of the forest carbon and nutrient dynamics that will be helpful in sustainable forest management plans. Two fertilization treatments, including (1) F400: 400 g P2O5 (16.5%)/tree and (2) F600: 600 g P2O5 /tree, and F0: control (without fertilization), were applied in an Acacia mangium plantation with a planting density of 1100 trees/ha (3 m × 3 m). The evaluation of fineroot growth across seasons showed that fertilization significantly increased production and subsequent mortality and decomposition. The total decomposition associated with F600 application was 7.95 tons ha−1 year−1, equaling 121% of F400 and 160% of the control. Mortality in F600 was 8.75 tons ha−1 year−1, equaling 111% of F400 and 198% of F0, while production in F600 was 10.40 tons ha−1 year−1, equaling 127% of F400 and 143% of F0. Fineroot production, mortality, and decomposition are seasonally dependent, with higher values measured in the rainy season than in the dry season. Stand basal area increment was significantly correlated with fineroot production (R2 = 0.75), mortality (R2 = 0.44), and decomposition (R2 = 0.48). This study showed that fertilization could facilitate fineroot production, which can then lead to a higher turnover of carbon and nutrients through the decomposition of the greater mass of the fineroots.

Plus tree selection is the first step to improve production and quality in forestry. An individual-based method is widely used to select plus trees for timber production, timber form, freedom from diseases and insects. In this study, a method to select plus trees for flower production is described and named as a crown-area-based method. Both individual-based and crown-area-based methods were used to select plus trees for Camellia impressinervis, a golden camellia; its yellow flowers have been used to treat sore throat and diarrhea, and to prevent cancers in China and Vietnam. Flower production of 21 concerned individuals was compared to the population mean and it was generated as a percentage. The population mean of the individual-based method is the mean of production of 21 trees as mean production/tree. While population mean of the crown-area-based method is mean production/m2 crown area (first production/m2 crown area for each tree was generated, then mean for population). The results indicated that both methods show seven individual trees with flower production >100% population mean. However, individual trees are different. Only five of 7 trees are the same in both methods. The tree rankings by flower production percentage in both methods are totally different. The highest ranking by individual-based method (310% mean) is 4th ranking by crown-area-based method (181% mean). While the highest ranking by crown-area-based method (270% mean) is third ranking by individual-based method (260% mean). It is concluded that crown-area-based method is better in selecting plus trees for flower purpose, as it considers the crown area which is known as a productive part of a tree to form flowers.

Net primary production (NPP) is an important index for understanding carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. In this study, aboveground NPP at Acacia mangium plantation was estimated basing on allometry for aboveground biomass increment (ΔM) and litter trap technique for litterfall (Lf). The experiment was conducted in two plots of 300 m2 each (15 × 20 m), established at a 21-month old plantation. Data were collected five times of 3-month intervals in a total duration of 357 days. The results indicated that Lf and ΔM were seasonal-dependent. Litterfall was highest (4.06 g m-1 day-1) during Sep-Jan (late rainy season, early winter) and lowest (1.10 g m-1 day-1) during Mar-Jun (early rainy season, early summer). While, ΔM was highest (13.51 g m-1 day-1) during Jun-Sep (rainy season, summer) and lowest (3.10 g m-1 day-1) during Jan-Mar (dry season, winter). Total Lf in a duration of 357 days was 9.69 tons ha-1 and ΔM was 27.71 tons ha-1, leading to total aboveground NPP of the present study plantation of 37.40 tons ha-1. It is concluded that aboveground NPP of acacia plantation was much higher than other forests of different types and ages around the world. Such difference indicates the importance of acacia plantation in soil nutrient cycling through litterfall decomposition and carbon sequestration through aboveground biomass increment.

Biotic and abiotic factors control aboveground biomass (AGB) and the structure of forest ecosystems. This study analyses the variation of AGB and stand structure of evergreen broadleaved forests among six ecoregions of Vietnam. A data set of 173 1-ha plots from 52 locations in undisturbed old-growth forests was developed. The results indicate that basal area and AGB are closely correlated with annual precipitation, but not with annual temperature, evaporation or hours of sunshine. Basal area and AGB are positively correlated with trees > 30 cm DBH. Most areas surveyed (52.6%) in these old-growth forests had AGB of 100–200 Mg ha−1; 5.2% had AGB of 400–500 Mg ha−1, and 0.6% had AGB of > 800 Mg ha−1. Seventy percent of the areas surveyed had stand densities of 300–600 ind. ha−1, and 64% had basal areas of 20–40 m2 ha−1. Precipitation is an important factor influencing the AGB of old-growth, evergreen broadleaved forests in Vietnam. Disturbances causing the loss of large-diameter trees (e.g., > 100 cm DBH) affects AGB but may not seriously affect stand density.

Carya tonkinensis Lecomte is a multipurpose tree species, naturally distributing in India, China, and Vietnam. Extract from leaves of C. tonkinensis contains pinostrobin acting as anti-bacteria and anti-infection. It is used as traditional medicine. Seeds are edible and contain oil. In addition, seed cover can be used to produce activated charcoal. Therefore, growing C. tonkinensis may contribute to poverty reduction in mountainous areas. This study aims to analyze suitable planting method and density for growing C. tonkinensis in Son La province, Northwestern Vietnam. Three treatments in planting method were considered: mixed planting of C. tonkinensis and Chukrasia tabularis, pure planting and scattered planting. Four treatments in planting density were considered: 625 plants/ha, 830 plants/ha, 1,000 plants/ha and 1,100 plants/ha. Stem height and stump diameter (Do) were measured at one year after planting, and death trees were counted for survival rate. The results indicated that scattered planting is the most suitable for C. tonkinensis and pure planting could also be applied. Meanwhile, planting density of 625 plants/ha (spacing of 4 × 4 m) and 830 plants/ha (spacing of 3 × 4 m) achieved the best performance. In both planting densities, the survival rate of the plants achieved >90%, their growths were >80 cm in height and >0.8 cm in Do after planting one year. It is recommended that site preparation should be conducted by cutting bands of 2 m width and un-cutting bands of 2 m. In addition, seedlings of >1-year old, which are taller than 0.6 m, should be used to ensure higher survival and growths of plants.

Golden camellias or yellow camellias are species belonging to genus Camellia L., family Theaceae. Fifty two species were described in southern China and Vietnam. Active ingredients such as polysaccharides, polyphenols, saponins, and flavonoids are well known characteristics of golden camellias. Its leaves and flowers have been long traditionally used for health improvement. It was found to be able to inhibit transplanted cancer, lower blood pressure, lower blood lipid, lower cholesterol, and prevent atherosclerosis. Currently, it costs 320–700US$ per one kg of dry flowers. Such price attracts many local ethnic people to plant golden camellias for poverty reduction. This work reviews (1) species and natural distribution, (2) uses and healthcare values, (3) techniques for seedling production, planting and tending, and (4) opportunities and challenges for future development of golden camellias.

Aim Palms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical forests and reduce uncertainty about these ecosystems under climate change. Methods We assembled a pantropical dataset of 2,548 forest plots (covering 1,191ha) and quantified tree palm (i.e., ≥10cm diameter at breast height) abundance relative to co‐occurring non‐palm trees. We compared the relative abundance of tree palms across biogeographical realms and tested for associations with palaeoclimate stability, current climate, edaphic conditions and metrics of forest structure. Results On average, the relative abundance of tree palms was more than five times larger between Neotropical locations and other biogeographical realms. Tree palms were absent in most locations outside the Neotropics but present in >80% of Neotropical locations. The relative abundance of tree palms was more strongly associated with local conditions (e.g., higher mean annual precipitation, lower soil fertility, shallower water table and lower plot mean wood density) than metrics of long‐term climate stability. Life‐form diversity also influenced the patterns; palm assemblages outside the Neotropics comprise many non‐tree (e.g., climbing) palms. Finally, we show that tree palms can influence estimates of above‐ground biomass, but the magnitude and direction of the effect require additional work. Conclusions Tree palms are not only quintessentially tropical, but they are also overwhelmingly Neotropical. Future work to understand the contributions of tree palms to biomass estimates and carbon cycling will be particularly crucial in Neotropical forests.

Most tropical forests outside protected areas have been or will be selectively logged because the timber industry is a main income-generating resource for many developing countries. Therefore, understanding the composition of commercial timber species and logging types is key for sustainable forest management in countries like Vietnam as they move toward fulfilling Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) agreements. Seven 1-ha plots were surveyed in the Central Highland of Vietnam, and 18 commercial tree species from these plots, whose timber is widely used by local people for housing and furniture making and timber is easily sold at local markets for high prices, were analyzed. In total, 151 tree species with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of ≥ 10 cm were recorded. The 18 commercially valuable species assessed in this study accounted for 33.2% of all stems (total of 524 stems ha−1 for all species), 47.1% of basal area (total of 34.35 m2 ha−1 for all species), and 50.8% of aboveground biomass/AGB (total of 262.68 Mg ha−1 for all species). Practicing diameter-limit harvesting of all commercially valuable species with DBH of ≥ 40 cm, which is widely performed in Vietnam, will reduce the number of stems by 7%, basal area by 31.6%, and AGB by 38.2%. Because such harvesting practices cause severe ecological impacts on the remaining forest, logged forests may require > 40 years to recover the structure status of a pre-logged forest. In addition, the recovery of the 18 commercially valuable species may require a much longer time because they comprised 33.2% of stems. Permission for logging natural forests should be given in Vietnam to sustain lives of local communities, where logging has been prohibited. However, alternative harvesting systems, such as reduced-impact logging systems, should be considered. The systems selected must simultaneously generate economic returns for local people and respect the REDD+ agreements with regard to protecting biodiversity and reducing carbon emissions.

Significance Identifying and explaining regional differences in tropical forest dynamics, structure, diversity, and composition are critical for anticipating region-specific responses to global environmental change. Floristic classifications are of fundamental importance for these efforts. Here we provide a global tropical forest classification that is explicitly based on community evolutionary similarity, resulting in identification of five major tropical forest regions and their relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. African and American forests are grouped, reflecting their former western Gondwanan connection, while Indo-Pacific forests range from eastern Africa and Madagascar to Australia and the Pacific. The connection between northern-hemisphere Asian and American forests is confirmed, while Dry forests are identified as a single tropical biome., Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world’s tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world’s tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Additionally, a northern-hemisphere Subtropical forest region was identified with representatives in Asia and America, providing support for a link between Asian and American northern-hemisphere forests.

Forest ecosystems can modify the atmospheric CO2 through biomass accumulation mostly in tree stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm. Aboveground biomass increment (ΔAGB), and changes in stand AGB, no. stems and basal area (BA) were calculated from mortality, recruitment, and growth data of tree stems in tropical evergreen broadleaved forest, Central Highland Vietnam. Data were derived from ten 1-ha permanent plots established in 2004, where all stems with DBH ≥ 10 cm were tagged, identified to species, and measured for DBH in 2004 and 2012. In an 8-year duration, the increment was 53 ± 10 stems ha–1, 7.8 ± 0.3 m2 ha–1 for BA and 86.0 ± 4.6 Mg ha–1 for AGB. The stem mortality rate was 0.9% year–1 and the stem recruitment rate was 2.2% year–1. Annual ΔAGB was 10.8 Mg ha–1 year–1, equaling to 5.4 Mg C ha–1 year–1. Laichau ginseng,Panax vietnamensisvar.fuscidiscus, has been contributing to poverty reduction for ethnic communities in Vietnam. Therefore, identifying suitable planting areas becomes important for sustainable development. Four main conditions were selected for mapping, including elevation above sea level, air temperature, precipitation, and vegetation types. It was then classified to three levels of suitable, less-suitable, and not-suitable. Four corresponding digital maps were used to overlap and met areas were generated. The results indicated that total suitable area for planting Laichau ginseng was 17,339.3 ha, accounting for 1.9 % total provincial land area, and the total less-suitable area was 22,438.1 ha, accounting for 2.5 %. It is concluded that Laichau ginseng should be only planted in suitable areas. In other areas, trials must be conducted for further recommendations.

[EN] The identity of the dominant root-associated microbial symbionts in a forest determines the ability of trees to access limiting nutrients from atmospheric or soil pools, sequester carbon and withstand the effects of climate change. Characterizing the global distribution of these symbioses and identifying the factors that control this distribution are thus integral to understanding the present and future functioning of forest ecosystems. Here we generate a spatially explicit global map of the symbiotic status of forests, using a database of over 1.1 million forest inventory plots that collectively contain over 28,000 tree species. Our analyses indicate that climate variables—in particular, climatically controlled variation in the rate of decomposition—are the primary drivers of the global distribution of major symbioses. We estimate that ectomycorrhizal trees, which represent only 2% of all plant species, constitute approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis dominates forests in which seasonally cold and dry climates inhibit decomposition, and is the predominant form of symbiosis at high latitudes and elevation. By contrast, arbuscular mycorrhizal trees dominate in aseasonal, warm tropical forests, and occur with ectomycorrhizal trees in temperate biomes in which seasonally warm-and-wet climates enhance decomposition. Continental transitions between forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal or arbuscular mycorrhizal trees occur relatively abruptly along climate-driven decomposition gradients; these transitions are probably caused by positive feedback effects between plants and microorganisms. Symbiotic nitrogen fixers—which are insensitive to climatic controls on decomposition (compared with mycorrhizal fungi)—are most abundant in arid biomes with alkaline soils and high maximum temperatures. Estimating production of fine roots (diameter ≤ 2 mm) is significant important to understand carbon cycle of forest ecosystem as it may contributes up to 70% of total net primary production. The estimation of fine root production is left behind in many parts, especially in developing countries including Vietnam.

Chestnuts have historical importance as a food source worldwide. Planting of chestnuts has focused on a few species, including Castanea dentata, Castanea sativa, Castanea mollissima, and Castanea crenata, although others species are also edible. Castanea species are members of the beech family (Fagaceae) and are native to tropical and temperate areas. In this study, the yield and nut quality of Castanopsis piriformis in natural forests of the Central Highlands of Vietnam were investigated to provide evidence that C. piriformis is worth growing as a food species. Data were collected from 12 plots of 50 m × 50 m size located in four altitude zones. Nuts were collected from three to five chestnut trees in each plot judged to be of typical sized based on diameter at breast height and crown diameter. Average dry yield of nuts was found to be elevation-dependent, being highest at 500–1000 m (1152 kg/ha/year), decreasing to 815 kg/ha/year below 500 m, and to 770 kg/ha/year at 1000–1500 m. The lowest yield was observed at above 1500 m (252 kg/ha/year). Protein and lipid contents in the kernels of C. piriformis chestnut were 4.4 and 0.1 %, respectively. Glucose accounted for 73.1 % and was significantly higher than that of commercially grown Castanopsis boisii chestnuts in Northern Vietnam. With the current price of 0.6 US$/kg nuts, collecting nuts growing in natural forest can bring at least 480 US$/ha/year to local people. These results indicate the possibility of growing and consuming C. piriformis chestnut as a crop to decrease poverty. However, governmental support is required for the sustainable development of C. piriformis.

Current studies indicate that fine roots of different diameter classes show different rates of decomposition. This study developed a new method to estimate fine-root production by considering the difference in the production of fine roots of two size classes, fine roots thinner than 1 mm and those between 1 and 2 mm, and their corresponding rates of decomposition. A litter bag experiment was used to estimate the decomposition rates, while the sequential soil core technique was used to identify mass values of live roots and dead roots at a given period of observation. The continuous inflow method was applied to estimate the amount of root decomposition, mortality and production with a framework of two diameter classes of fine roots and for quantification of the amount of mass transfer from the thicker fine-root class to the coarser root category (>2 mm). The results indicated that the estimate of fine-root production was greater when two size classes of fine roots were distinguished. Using a framework of two size classes developed in this study resulted in 21.3% higher fine-root production than a method that did not recognize fine-root size classes or mass transfer to the category of coarse roots. In addition, using shorter collection intervals led to higher production estimates than longer intervals. The production estimate with a 1-month interval was 21.4% higher than that with a 6-month interval. We consider that the use of the sequential soil core technique with continuous inflow estimate method by differentiating size classes of fine roots is likely to minimize the underestimation of the parameters of fine-root dynamics by accounting for decomposition and mortality of fine roots more appropriately.

The effect of environmental variables on the presence and abundance of tree species in a tropical lowland undisturbed limestone and non-limestone forest in Ben En National Park, Vietnam was investigated. The relationships between 13 environmental variables and 29 tree species with a DBH ≥10 cm, as well as between six 6 physical variables with 26 species of seedling and sapling communities were assessed by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Data concerning all tree species ≥10 cm DBH were collected from eighteen 400 m 2 sample plots, while the abundance of regeneration (all individuals ≤5 cm DBH) was counted in fifty 2x20 m strip-plots. The significance of species-environments correlations were tested by distribution-free Monte Carlo tests. The CCA of the 29 examined tree species and 13 environmental variables indicated that the presence and abundance of the tree species were closely related to topographic factors. We may confirm that soil properties including pH, soil moisture content, and soil textures, were the most crucial factor in tree species composition and their distribution. Several species including Pometia pinnata, Amesiodendron chinense, Gironniera cuspidate, Cinnamomum mairei, and Caryodaphnopsis tonkinensis were not controlled by soil properties and topographic variables. The CCA also indicated that the abundance of regeneration tree species at all sites had positive and significant correlations with soil depth, while the occurrence of several other tree species (such as Koilodepas longifolium and Aglaia dasyclada) was positively correlated with a higher slope and rocky outcrop.Key Words: Undisturbed limestone and non-limestone forest, environmental factors, canonical correspondence analysis, vegetation-environment relationship

Agarwood trade has been growing rapidly due to its active ingredients composed of volatile substances, which are widely used in the cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. However, the formation time of agarwood in nature is quite long and little is known about its formation agents and mechanisms in planted Aquilaria crassna trees. In this study, biological, chemical and mechanical treatments were applied to 5-, 8-, and 11-year-old A. crassna plantations in north central, Vietnam. Agarwood samples were collected at 1 and 2 years after treatment. Oil content (Oc) in dry wood of A. crassna and sesquiterpene content in extracted oil were analyzed using hydrodistillation method and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The results indicated that 1 year after treatment, control (no treatment) and mechanical treatment (nails hammered to tree stems) had highest Oc (0.061–0.079 %) but lowest sesquiterpene content (2.1–7.1 %). Chemical treatment (mixture of acid sulfuric and sodium methyl bisulfate) had lowest Oc (0.038–0.039 %) but highest sesquiterpene content (15.8–20.8 %). While, 1 year after treatment biological treatments had Oc of 0.050–0.077 % and sesquiterpene content of 2.4–11.1 %. Two years after treatment, control still had lowest sesquiterpene content (3.2–7.0 %), while highest content (13.9–44.2 %) belonged to biological treatment (a mixture of fungi Phialophora spp. and Fusarium spp.). There was a total of 56 sesquiterpenes found in extracted oil from wood samples in biological treatments, which included eight highly commercially-valuable sesquiterpenes on international trade. Biological treatment with a mixture of fungi P. spp. and F. spp. should be encouraged to apply to 11-year-old A. crassna plantation, which resulted in highest sesquiterpene content (44.2 %).

Net primary production (NPP) is an important index for evaluating the patterns, processes, and dynamics of carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. In this study, we estimated the NPP in a warm-temperate old-growth evergreen broad-leaved forest in southwestern Japan. The estimation was based on four compartments: aboveground stand increment (ΔM), aboveground litterfall (Lf), fine-root production (Fr), and coarse root increment (ΔCr). The data for ΔM and ΔCr were collected from a permanent 200 × 200 m2 plot over a 4-year interval, while Lf and Fr were collected over a 1-year interval. The NPP was 4.65 g m−2 day−1, of which ΔM accounted for 25.2 %, Lf accounted for 38.7 %, Fr accounted for 33.4 %, and the remaining 2.7 % was attributed to ΔCr. SUMMARY This is the first study on carbon stock estimation in the tropical evergreen broadleaf forests in Central Highland, Vietnam. As result of selective logging and shifting cultivation, remaining forests are silviculturally classified to five categories by governmental standard basing on standing volume (V), including very poor forest (V ≤ 10 m3/ha), poor forest (10 300 m3/ha). Carbon stock of four pools including big trees (diameter at breast height/dbh ≥ 5 cm), short vegetation layer (dbh < 5 cm), necromass, and soil was measured by using 150 plots of 50 m × 50 m each. Soil carbon stock was assessed from soil samples taken to 30 cm depth. The results indicated total carbon stock increased from 75 tons C/ha in very poor forest to 199 tons C/ha in medium forest, and to 255 tons C/ha in very rich forest. In recent years, ecologists have focused on estimating Net Ecosystem Production (NEP) to understand the role of forests against increasing concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere, a major concern in researches and debates on global warming. This is due to the fact that NEP of a forest is the amount of carbon accumulated in a unit of area and time. This chapter discusses NEP in tropical broad-leaved forests of the Copia Natural Reserve, northwest Vietnam and the need for a carbon certificate to support the local community. Based on field research in northwest Vietnam, this chapter proposes a modified and easily applicable method for estimating NEP. Research results indicate that one hectare of secondary broad-leaved forest in Vietnam can accumulate 6.57 Mg C y−1, more than twice that of old-growth forest at 2.57 Mg C y−1. Research suggests that NEP is higher than some other forests around the world. We suggest that a price should minimally sustain the livelihood of forest protectors, at around 10 US$/ton carbon, a price much higher than current government payments of 10 US$ ha y−1, regardless of carbon accumulation. This chapter asserts the importance of issuing forest carbon certificate to forest protectors so that local communities can raise their bargaining power to improve their income while at the same time, protect the natural forests sustainably.

Ba Vi National Park (BNP) is known as one of the first parks established in Vietnam and has been well pre served against human disturbances. A study was conducted to understand altitudinal changes and aspect differences of species diversity and stand structure in evergreen broadleaf forest in BNP. Twenty plots (40 m x 50 m), distributing between 130 and 1,195 m above sea level were used for stem census, which were equally established in both eastern and western aspects. All stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were identified to species and measured for DBH. Results indicated significant linear relationships between elevation and basal area (G), top canopy height, species density, Shannon diversity index, and E venness. Elevation zone of > 1,000 m above sea level had highest species density, Shannon diversity index, Evenness, stem density, G, and top canopy height, which were significant higher than that in 500 - 1,000 m and < 500 m elevational zones. Species compo sition in BNP was different between eastern aspect and western aspect, and both aspects shared 86 species in total 219 species found. While, stand structure and species diversity were not significant different between two aspects.

Agroforestry has been practiced for a long time in Vietnam. In this study, the cost - benefit was analyzed in four agroforestry systems, which have been widely established in north mountainous provinces with Star Anise ( Illicium verum ) + t ea (IT), bead tree ( Melia azedarach ) + cassava (MC), Acacia hybrid + cassava (AC) and Acacia mangium + maize (AM). A questionnaire was used to obtain information on (1) Inputs , which included costs for seeds/seedlings, fertil izers, pesticides, and labor costs, and (2) Incomes , which included benefits from selling fruits, leaves, corns, and timbers. The results indicated that IT had the highest economic benefit (6,527 US$ ha - 1 y - 1 ), followed by MC (2,905 US$ ha - 1 y - 1 ), AC (1,043 US$ ha - 1 y - 1 ), and AM (870 US$ ha - 1 y - 1 ), respectively. However, even with such economic benefits, these agroforestry models could not be established across all mountainous regions because of site specific ecological requirements of tree species and crops. In addition, unstable market and fluctuating price of agroforestry product s is a big concern leading to un sustainability of these agroforestry systems. It is recommended that

Fertilization has been widely applied to increase and sustain productivity of plantations, especially in poor soils. N, P, K, and compost are usually used for forest plantation in Vietnam. The amount of fertilizer and rates of concerned nutrient are decided basing on species and edaphic condition. In this study, four fertilizer applications were used at planting; 100 g NPK+200 g compost, 150 g NPK+150 g compost, 200 g NPK+100 g compost, and control (no fertilization) for Eucalyptus urophylla plantation grown in North Central and Southern, Vietnam with planting density of 1,330 trees ha-1 (spacing 2.5 × 3 m). Growth data were collected after planting three years. Fertilizer applications had significant effects on diameter at breast height (DBH), crown diameter (Dc), and dry biomass of 3-year-old plantations in both sites. A 3-year-old. E. urophylla plantation had largest DBH (9.7 cm) and dry biomass (67.2 Mg ha-1) in fertilizer application of 200 g NPK+100 g compost in Southern site, and smallest DBH (6.4 cm) and dry biomass (38.2 Mg ha-1) in control also in Southern site. Comparing between two sites at three treatments with fertilizer indicated the significant higher dry biomass in Southern site than that in North Central site. While, it was converted in control, indicating higher dry biomass in North Central site. To grow E. urophylla, 200 g NPK+100 g compost should be applied at planting for Southern site. While, 100 g NPK+200 g compost is encouraged for North Central site.

Live shelterbelts are common elements in coastal land areas and play an important role in reducing wind speed and sand drift. A simple measured index, that well represents relationship between shelterbelt structure and wind speed reduction, is required by landowners to enable them in establishing more effective shelterbelts. A three-dimensional crown (3D) density is proposed, which can be easily identified through shelterbelt parameters including maximum height, shelterbelt width, vertical crown/stem area ratio, and horizontal crown/stem area ratio. Aims: Apply different silvicultural approaches to improve oil productivity and quality from abandoned stands and analyze cost-benefit of developing tea oil camellias. Study Design: Three experiments were conducted as (1) Changing canopy of 36-yearold plantation by grafting, (2) Using Bortrac fertilizer for promoting fruiting by spraying to canopy, and (3) Stem/branch thinning and fertilizing. Place: North Central, Vietnam at 19o16’N and 105o23’E. Methodology: Shoots of 4 – 6 mm in diameter and 3 -5 cm long from improved cultivar were used to graft to 36-year-old trees. Bortrac fertilizer was used to spray to canopy of 15-year-old plantation when trees bloomed. While three treatments of stem/branch thinning and fertilizing at different intensities was applied to 29-year-old plantation of 830 trees ha. Results: The results showed that old stand, which has low seed productivity, could be replaced by a new canopy through grafting with improved cultivars. Meanwhile, fertilizing through spraying on canopy at early blooming peak with Bortrac fertilizer increased seed Original Research Article Thang et al.; AJAEES, Article no. In addition, applying 0.5 kg inorganic fertilizer (NPK) and 5 kg organic manure per tree coupled with thinning under crown-old branches and diseased branches increased up to 60% seed productivity and improved oil ratio and quality. Costbenefit analysis indicated that by applying different intensities of stem/branch thinning and fertilizing to 29-year-old plantation, profit margin increased from US$ 502 to as much as US$ 549 ha year for growers selling dry seeds as final product. Meanwhile, it increased from US$ 1,791 to US$ 2,426 ha year by extracting oil for final product. Conclusion: There is a potentiality of growing tea oil camellia with the increased profit of as much as US$ 2,426 ha year for 29-year-old plantation by applying intensive silvicultural approach.
