Quantum sensors based on solid-state defects, in particular nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, enable precise measurement of magnetic fields, temperature, rotation, and electric fields. However, the sensitivity of leading NV spin ensemble sensors remains far from the intrinsic spin-projection noise limit. Here we move towards this quantum limit of performance by introducing (i) a cavity quantum electrodynamic (cQED) hybrid system operating in the strong coupling regime, which enables high readout fidelity of an NV ensemble using microwave homodyne detection; (ii) a comprehensive nonlinear model of the cQED sensor operation, including NV ensemble inhomogeneity and optical polarization; and (iii) ``spin refrigeration'' where the optically-polarized spin ensemble sharply reduces the ambient-temperature microwave thermal noise, resulting in enhanced sensitivity. Applying these advances to magnetometry, we demonstrate a broadband sensitivity of 580 fT/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ around 15 kHz in ambient conditions. We then discuss the implications of this model for design of future magnetometers, including devices approaching 12 fT/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ sensitivity. A central challenge in quantum networking is transferring quantum states between different physical modalities, such as between flying photonic qubits and stationary quantum memories. One implementation entails using spin-photon interfaces that combine solid-state spin qubits, such as color centers in diamond, with photonic nanostructures. However, while high-fidelity spin-photon interactions have been demonstrated on isolated devices, building practical quantum repeaters requires scaling to large numbers of interfaces yet to be realized. Here, we demonstrate integration of nanophotonic cavities containing tin-vacancy (SnV) centers in a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Out of a six-channel quantum micro-chiplet (QMC), we find four coupled SnV-cavity devices with an average Purcell factor of ~7. Based on system analyses and numerical simulations, we find with near-term improvements this multiplexed architecture can enable high-fidelity quantum state transfer, paving the way towards building large-scale quantum repeaters., Comment: to be published in Optica Quantum

While infrared and optical single-photon detectors exist at high quantum efficiencies, detecting single microwave photons has been an ongoing challenge. Specifically, microwave photon detection is challenging compared to its optical counterpart as its energy scale is four to five orders of magnitude smaller, necessitating lower operating temperatures. Here, we propose a hybrid spin-optomechanical interface to detect single microwave photons. The microwave photons are coupled to a phononic resonator via piezoelectric actuation. This phononic cavity also acts as a photonic cavity with an embedded Silicon-Vacancy (SiV) center in diamond. Phonons mediate the quantum state transfer of the microwave cavity to the SiV spin, in order to allow for high spin-mechanical coupling at the single quantum level. From this, the optical cavity is used to perform a cavity-enhanced single-shot readout of the spin-state. Here, starting with a set of experimentally realizable parameters, we simulate the complete protocol and estimate an overall detection success probability $P_s^0$ of $0.972$, Shannon's mutual information $I^{0}(X;Y)$ of $0.82\ln(2)$, and a total detection time of $\sim2$ $\mu s$. We also talk about the experimental regimes in which $P_s^0$ tends to near unity and $I^{0}(X;Y)$ tends to $\ln(2)$ indicating exactly one bit of information retrieval about the presence or absence of a microwave photon.

Color centers in diamonds have emerged as a leading solid-state platform for advancing quantum technologies, satisfying the DiVincenzo criteria and recently achieving a quantum advantage in secret key distribution. Recent theoretical works estimate that general-purpose quantum computing using local quantum communication networks will require millions of physical qubits to encode thousands of logical qubits, which presents a substantial challenge to the hardware architecture at this scale. To address the unanswered scaling problem, in this work, we first introduce a scalable hardware modular architecture "Quantum System-on-Chip" (QSoC) that features compact two-dimensional arrays "quantum microchiplets" (QMCs) containing tin-vacancy (SnV-) spin qubits integrated on a cryogenic application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). We demonstrate crucial architectural subcomponents, including (1) QSoC fabrication via a lock-and-release method for large-scale heterogeneous integration; (2) a high-throughput calibration of the QSoC for spin qubit spectral inhomogenous registration; (3) spin qubit spectral tuning functionality for inhomogenous compensation; (4) efficient spin-state preparation and measurement for improved spin and optical properties. QSoC architecture supports full connectivity for quantum memory arrays in a set of different resonant frequencies and offers the possibility for further scaling the number of solid-state physical qubits via larger and denser QMC arrays and optical frequency multiplexing networking., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures. Atom-like defects or color centers (CC's) in nanostructured diamond are a leading platform for optically linked quantum technologies, with recent advances including memory-enhanced quantum communication, multi-node quantum networks, and spin-mediated generation of photonic cluster states. Scaling to practically useful applications motivates architectures meeting the following criteria: C1 individual optical addressing of spin qubits; C2 frequency tuning of CC spin-dependent optical transitions; C3 coherent spin control in CC ground states; C4 active photon routing; C5 scalable manufacturability; and C6 low on-chip power dissipation for cryogenic operations. However, no architecture meeting C1-C6 has thus far been demonstrated. Here, we introduce a hybrid quantum system-on-chip (HQ-SoC) architecture that simultaneously achieves C1-C6. Key to this advance is the realization of piezoelectric strain control of diamond waveguide-coupled tin vacancy centers to meet C2 and C3, with ultra-low power dissipation necessary for C6. The DC response of our device allows emitter transition tuning by over 20 GHz, while the large frequency range (exceeding 2 GHz) enables low-power AC control. We show acoustic manipulation of integrated tin vacancy spins and estimate single-phonon coupling rates over 1 kHz in the resolved sideband regime. Combined with high-speed optical routing with negligible static hold power, this HQ-SoC platform opens the path to scalable single-qubit control with optically mediated entangling gates.

A quantum register coupled to a spin-photon interface is a key component in quantum communication and information processing. Group-IV color centers in diamond (SiV, GeV, and SnV) are promising candidates for this application, comprising an electronic spin with optical transitions coupled to a nuclear spin as the quantum register. However, the creation of a quantum register for these color centers with deterministic and strong coupling to the spin-photon interface remains challenging. Here, we make first-principles predictions of the hyperfine parameters of the group-IV color centers, which we verify experimentally with a comprehensive comparison between the spectra of spin active and spin neutral intrinsic dopant nuclei in single GeV and SnV emitters. In line with the theoretical predictions, detailed spectroscopy on large sample sizes reveals that hyperfine coupling causes a splitting of the optical transition of SnV an order of magnitude larger than the optical linewidth and provides a magnetic-field insensitive transition. This strong coupling provides access to a new regime for quantum registers in diamond color centers, opening avenues for novel spin-photon entanglement and quantum sensing schemes for these well-studied emitters.

A contemporary challenge for the scalability of quantum networks is developing quantum nodes with simultaneous high photonic efficiency and long-lived qubits. Here, we present a fibre-packaged nanophotonic diamond waveguide hosting a tin-vacancy centre with a spin-1/2 $^{117}$Sn nucleus. The interaction between the electronic and nuclear spins results in a signature 452(7) MHz hyperfine splitting. This exceeds the natural optical linewidth by a factor of 16, enabling direct optical nuclear-spin initialisation with 98.6(3)% fidelity and single-shot readout with 80(1)% fidelity. The waveguide-to-fibre extraction efficiency of our device of 57(6)% enables the practical detection of 5-photon events. Combining the photonic performance with the optically initialised nuclear spin, we demonstrate a spin-gated single-photon nonlinearity with 11(1)% contrast in the absence of an external magnetic field. These capabilities position our nanophotonic interface as a versatile quantum node in the pursuit of scalable quantum networks.

Tin-vacancy centers in diamond are promising spin-photon interfaces owing to their high quantum-efficiency, large Debye-Waller factor, and compatibility with photonic nanostructuring. Benchmarking their single-photon indistinguishability is a key challenge for future applications. Here, we report the generation of single photons with $99.7^{+0.3}_{-2.5}\%$ purity and $63(9)\%$ indistinguishability from a resonantly excited tin-vacancy center in a single-mode waveguide. We obtain quantum control of the optical transition with $1.71(1)$-ns-long $\pi$-pulses of $77.1(8)\%$ fidelity. A modest Purcell enhancement factor of 12 would enhance the indistinguishability to $95$\%. The greater than $100$ ms spectral stability shown would then enable strings of up to $10^6$ identical photons to be generated.

Large scale control over thousands of quantum emitters desired by quantum network technology is limited by power consumption and cross-talk inherent in current microwave techniques. Here we propose a quantum repeater architecture based on densely-packed diamond color centers (CCs) in a programmable electrode array. This 'electric-field programmable spin array' (eFPSA) enables high-speed spin control of individual CCs with low cross-talk and power dissipation. Integrated in a slow-light waveguide for efficient optical coupling, the eFPSA serves as a quantum interface for optically-mediated entanglement. We evaluate the performance of the eFPSA architecture in comparison to a routing tree design and show increased entanglement generation rate into thousands of qubits regime. A fundamental result of quantum mechanics is that the fluctuations of a bosonic field are given by its temperature $T$. An electromagnetic mode with frequency $\omega$ in the microwave band has a significant thermal photon occupation at room temperature according to the Bose-Einstein distribution $\bar{n} = k_BT / \hbar\omega$. The room temperature thermal state of a 3 GHz mode, for example, is characterized by a mean photon number $\bar{n} \sim 2000$ and variance $\Delta n^2 \approx \bar{n}^2$. This thermal variance sets the measurement noise floor in applications ranging from wireless communications to positioning, navigation, and timing to magnetic resonance imaging. We overcome this barrier in continuously cooling a ${\sim} 3$ GHz cavity mode by coupling it to an ensemble of optically spin-polarized nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in a room-temperature diamond. The NV spins are pumped into a low entropy state via a green laser and act as a heat sink to the microwave mode through their collective interaction with microwave photons. Using a simple detection circuit we report a peak noise reduction of $-2.3 \pm 0.1 \, \textrm{dB}$ and minimum cavity mode temperature of $150 \pm 5 \textrm{K}$. We present also a linearized model to identify the important features of the cooling, and demonstrate its validity through magnetically tuned, spectrally resolved measurements. The realization of efficient mode cooling at ambient temperature opens the door to applications in precision measurement and communication, with the potential to scale towards fundamental quantum limits.

We introduce a hybrid tripartite quantum system for strong coupling between a semiconductor spin, a mechanical phonon, and a microwave photon. Consisting of a piezoelectric resonator with an integrated diamond strain concentrator, this system achieves microwave-acoustic and spin-acoustic coupling rates $\sim$MHz or greater, allowing for simultaneous ultra-high cooperativities ($\sim 10^3$ and $\sim 10^2$, respectively). From finite-element modeling and master equation simulations, we estimate photon-to-spin quantum state transfer fidelities exceeding 0.97 based on separately demonstrated device parameters. We anticipate that this device will enable hybrid quantum architectures that leverage the advantages of both superconducting circuits and solid-state spins for information processing, memory, and networking.

We propose a coherent mechanical interface between defect centers in diamond and telecom optical modes. Combining recent developments in spin-mechanical devices and optomechanical crystals, we introduce a 1D diamond nanobeam with embedded mechanical and electric field concentrator with mechanical and optical mode volumes $V_\mathrm{mech}/\Lambda_\mathrm{p}^3\sim 10^{-5}$ and $V_\mathrm{opt}/\lambda^3\sim 10^{-3} $, respectively. By placing a Group IV vacancy in the concentrator we demonstrate exquisitely high spin-mechanical coupling rates approaching 40 MHz, while retaining high acousto-optical couplings. We theoretically show that such a device, used in an entanglement heralding scheme, can provide high-fidelity Bell pairs between quantum repeaters. Using the mechanical interface as an intermediary between the optical and spin subsystems, we are able to directly use telecom optics, bypassing the native wavelength requirements of the spin. As the spin is never optically excited or addressed, we do not suffer from spectral diffusion and can operate at higher temperatures (up to 40 K), limited only by thermal losses. We estimate that based on these metrics, optomechanical devices with high spin-mechanical coupling will be a useful architecture for near-term quantum repeaters.

Group-IV color centers in diamond are a promising light-matter interface for quantum networking devices. The negatively charged tin-vacancy center (SnV) is particularly interesting, as its large spin-orbit coupling offers strong protection against phonon dephasing and robust cyclicity of its optical transitions towards spin-photon entanglement schemes. Here, we demonstrate multi-axis coherent control of the SnV spin qubit via an all-optical stimulated Raman drive between the ground and excited states. We use coherent population trapping and optically driven electronic spin resonance to confirm coherent access to the qubit at 1.7 K, and obtain spin Rabi oscillations at a rate of $\Omega/2\pi$=3.6(1) MHz. All-optical Ramsey interferometry reveals a spin dephasing time of $T_2^*$=1.3(3)$\mu$s and two-pulse dynamical decoupling already extends the spin coherence time to $T_2$=0.33(14) ms. Combined with transform-limited photons and integration into photonic nanostructures, our results make the SnV a competitive spin-photon building block for quantum networks.

We propose and optimize a vertically-loaded diamond microdisk resonator (VLDMoRt) coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond for efficient collection of zero-phonon-line emission into low numerical aperture ($\text{NA}$) free-space modes. The VLDMoRt achieves a Purcell enhancement of 172 with $39\%$ of the emitted light collected within a $\text{NA}$ of 0.6, leading to a total external spin-photon collection efficiency of 0.33. As the design is compatible with established nanofabrication techniques and couples to low-NA modes accessible by cryogenic free-space optical systems, it is a promising platform for efficient spin-photon interfaces based on diamond quantum emitters.

Quantum emitters in diamond are leading optically-accessible solid-state qubits. Among these, Group IV-vacancy defect centers have attracted great interest as coherent and stable optical interfaces to long-lived spin states. Theory indicates that their inversion symmetry provides first-order insensitivity to stray electric fields, a common limitation for optical coherence in any host material. Here we experimentally quantify this electric field dependence via an external electric field applied to individual tin-vacancy (SnV) centers in diamond. These measurements reveal that the permanent electric dipole moment and polarizability are at least four orders of magnitude smaller than for the diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers, representing the first direct measurement of the inversion symmetry protection of a Group IV defect in diamond. Moreover, we show that by modulating the electric-field-induced dipole we can use the SnV as a nanoscale probe of local electric field noise, and we employ this technique to highlight the effect of spectral diffusion on the SnV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have emerged as a leading quantum sensor platform, combining exceptional sensitivity with nanoscale spatial resolution by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). Because fluorescence-based ODMR techniques are limited by low photon collection efficiency and modulation contrast, there has been growing interest in infrared (IR)-absorption-based readout of the NV singlet state transition. IR readout can improve contrast and collection efficiency, but it has thus far been limited to long-pathlength geometries in bulk samples due to the small absorption cross section of the NV singlet state. Here, we amplify the IR absorption by introducing a resonant diamond metallodielectric metasurface that achieves a quality factor of Q ~ 1,000. This "plasmonic quantum sensing metasurface" (PQSM) combines localized surface plasmon polariton resonances with long-range Rayleigh-Wood anomaly modes and achieves the desired balance between field localization and sensing volume to optimize spin readout sensitivity. From combined electromagnetic and rate-equation modeling, we estimate a sensitivity below 1 nT/Hz$^{1/2}$ per um$^2$ of sensing area using numbers for present-day NV diamond samples and fabrication techniques. The proposed PQSM enables a new form of microscopic ODMR sensing with infrared readout near the spin-projection-noise-limited sensitivity, making it appealing for the most demanding applications such as imaging through scattering tissue and spatially-resolved chemical NMR detection.

Atom-like quantum systems in solids have been proposed as a compact alternative for atomic clocks, but realizing the potential of solid-state technology will requires an architecture design which overcomes traditional limitations such as magnetic and temperature-induced systematics. Here, we propose a solution to this problem: a `solid-state spin clock' that hybridizes a microwave resonator with a magnetic-field-insensitive spin transition within the ground state of the diamond nitrogen-vacancy center. Detailed numerical and analytical modeling of this `polariton-stabilized' spin clock (PSSC) indicates a potential fractional frequency instability below $10^{-13}$ at 1 second measurement time, assuming present-day experimental parameters. We introduce a method for high-fidelity quantum state transduction between a superconducting microwave qubit and the ground state spin system of a solid-state artificial atom, mediated via an acoustic bus connected by piezoelectric transducers. Applied to present-day experimental parameters for superconducting circuit qubits and diamond silicon vacancy centers in an optimized phononic cavity, we estimate quantum state transduction with fidelity exceeding 99\% at a MHz-scale bandwidth. By combining the complementary strengths of superconducting circuit quantum computing and artificial atoms, the hybrid architecture provides high-fidelity qubit gates with long-lived quantum memory, high-fidelity measurement, large qubit number, reconfigurable qubit connectivity, and high-fidelity state and gate teleportation through optical quantum networks., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Artificial atom qubits in diamond have emerged as leading candidates for a range of solid-state quantum systems, from quantum sensors to repeater nodes in memory-enhanced quantum communication. Inversion-symmetric group IV vacancy centers, comprised of Si, Ge, Sn and Pb dopants, hold particular promise as their neutrally charged electronic configuration results in a ground-state spin triplet, enabling long spin coherence above cryogenic temperatures. However, despite the tremendous interest in these defects, a theoretical understanding of the electronic and spin structure of these centers remains elusive. In this context, we predict the ground- and excited-state properties of the neutral group IV color centers from first principles. We capture the product Jahn-Teller effect found in the excited state manifold to second order in electron-phonon coupling, and present a non-perturbative treatment of the effect of spin-orbit coupling. Importantly, we find that spin-orbit splitting is strongly quenched due to the dominant Jahn-Teller effect, with the lowest optically-active $^3E_u$ state weakly split into $m_s$-resolved states. The predicted complex vibronic spectra of the neutral group IV color centers are essential for their experimental identification and have key implications for use of these systems in quantum information science., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Quantum technologies such as quantum sensing, quantum imaging, quantum communications, and quantum computing rely on the ability to actively manipulate the quantum state of light and matter. Quantum emitters, such as color centers trapped in solids, are a useful platform for the realization of elementary building blocks (qubits) of quantum information systems. In particular, the modular nature of such solid-state devices opens up the possibility to connect them into quantum networks and create non-classical states of light shared among many qubits. The function of a quantum network relies on efficient and controllable interactions among individual qubits. In this context, we present a scheme where optically active qubits of differing excitation energies are mutually coupled via a dispersive interaction with a shared mode of an optical cavity. This generally off-resonant interaction is prohibitive of direct exchange of information among the qubits. However, we propose a scheme in which by acoustically modulating the qubit excitation energies it is in fact possible to tune to resonance a pre-selected pair of qubits and thus open a communication channel between them. This method potentially enables fast ($\sim$ns) and parallelizable on-demand control of a large number of physical qubits. We develop an analytical and a numerical theoretical model demonstrating this principle and suggest feasible experimental scenarios to test the theoretical predictions., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

A central challenge in developing quantum computers and long-range quantum networks lies in the distribution of entanglement across many individually controllable qubits. Colour centres in diamond have emerged as leading solid-state 'artificial atom' qubits, enabling on-demand remote entanglement, coherent control of over 10 ancillae qubits with minute-long coherence times, and memory-enhanced quantum communication. A critical next step is to integrate large numbers of artificial atoms with photonic architectures to enable large-scale quantum information processing systems. To date, these efforts have been stymied by qubit inhomogeneities, low device yield, and complex device requirements. Here, we introduce a process for the high-yield heterogeneous integration of 'quantum micro-chiplets' (QMCs) -- diamond waveguide arrays containing highly coherent colour centres -- with an aluminium nitride (AlN) photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Our process enables the development of a 72-channel defect-free array of germanium-vacancy (GeV) and silicon-vacancy (SiV) colour centres in a PIC. Photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals long-term stable and narrow average optical linewidths of 54 MHz (146 MHz) for GeV (SiV) emitters, close to the lifetime-limited linewidth of 32 MHz (93 MHz). Additionally, inhomogeneities in the individual qubits can be compensated in situ with integrated tuning of the optical frequencies over 100 GHz. The ability to assemble large numbers of nearly indistinguishable artificial atoms into phase-stable PICs provides an architecture toward multiplexed quantum repeaters and general-purpose quantum computers., Comment: 5 figures

Diamond photonics is an ever growing field of research driven by the prospects of harnessing diamond and its colour centres as suitable hardware for solid-state quantum applications. The last two decades have seen the field been shaped by the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre both with breakthrough fundamental physics demonstrations and practical realizations. Recently however, an entire suite of other diamond defects has emerged. They are M V colour centres, where M indicates one of the elements in the IV column of the periodic table Si, Ge, Sn and Pb, and V indicates lattice vacancies, i.e. missing next-neighbour carbon atoms. These centres exhibit a much stronger emission into the zero phonon line then the NV centre, they display inversion symmetry, and can be engineered using ion implantation all attractive features for scalable quantum photonic architectures based on solid-state, single-photon sources. In this perspective, we highlight the leading techniques for engineering and characterizing these diamond defects, discuss the current state-of-the-art of group IV-based devices and provide an outlook of the future directions the field is taking towards the realisation of solid-state quantum photonics with diamond.

The simultaneous imaging of magnetic fields and temperature (MT) is important in a range of applications, including studies of carrier transport, solid-state material dynamics, and semiconductor device characterization. Techniques exist for separately measuring temperature (e.g., infrared (IR) microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and thermo-reflectance microscopy) and magnetic fields (e.g., scanning probe magnetic force microscopy and superconducting quantum interference devices). However, these techniques cannot measure magnetic fields and temperature simultaneously. Here, we use the exceptional temperature and magnetic field sensitivity of nitrogen vacancy (NV) spins in conformally-coated nanodiamonds to realize simultaneous wide-field MT imaging. Our "quantum conformally-attached thermo-magnetic" (Q-CAT) imaging enables (i) wide-field, high-frame-rate imaging (100 - 1000 Hz); (ii) high sensitivity; and (iii) compatibility with standard microscopes. We apply this technique to study the industrially important problem of characterizing multifinger gallium nitride high-electron-mobility transistors (GaN HEMTs). We spatially and temporally resolve the electric current distribution and resulting temperature rise, elucidating functional device behavior at the microscopic level. The general applicability of Q-CAT imaging serves as an important tool for understanding complex MT phenomena in material science, device physics, and related fields.

Solid-state quantum emitters that couple coherent optical transitions to long-lived spin qubits are essential for quantum networks. Here we report on the spin and optical properties of individual tin-vacancy (SnV) centers in diamond nanostructures. Through cryogenic magneto-optical and spin spectroscopy, we verify the inversion-symmetric electronic structure of the SnV, identify spin-conserving and spin-flipping transitions, characterize transition linewidths, measure electron spin lifetimes and evaluate the spin dephasing time. We find that the optical transitions are consistent with the radiative lifetime limit even in nanofabricated structures. The spin lifetime is phononlimited with an exponential temperature scaling leading to $T_1$ $>$ 10 ms, and the coherence time, $T_2$ reaches the nuclear spin-bath limit upon cooling to 2.9 K. These spin properties exceed those of other inversion-symmetric color centers for which similar values require millikelvin temperatures. With a combination of coherent optical transitions and long spin coherence without dilution refrigeration, the SnV is a promising candidate for feasable and scalable quantum networking applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond has emerged as a leading solid-state quantum sensor for applications including magnetometry, electrometry, thermometry, and chemical sensing. However, an outstanding challenge for practical applications is that existing NV-based sensing techniques require bulky and discrete instruments for spin control and detection. Here, we address this challenge by integrating NV based quantum sensing with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Through tailored CMOS-integrated microwave generation and photodetection, this work dramatically reduces the instrumentation footprint for quantum magnetometry and thermometry. This hybrid diamond-CMOS integration enables an ultra-compact and scalable platform for quantum sensing and quantum information processing.

We report on quantum emission from Pb-related color centers in diamond following ion implantation and high temperature vacuum annealing. First-principles calculations predict a negatively-charged Pb-vacancy center in a split-vacancy configuration, with a zero-phonon transition around 2.3 eV. Cryogenic photoluminescence measurements performed on emitters in nanofabricated pillars reveal several transitions, including a prominent doublet near 520 nm. The splitting of this doublet, 2 THz, exceeds that reported for other group-IV centers. These observations are consistent with the PbV center, which is expected to have the combination of narrow optical transitions and stable spin states, making it a promising system for quantum network nodes.

Medium-scale ensembles of coupled qubits offer a platform for near-term quantum technologies including computing, sensing, and the study of mesoscopic quantum systems. Atom-like emitters in solids have emerged as promising quantum memories, with demonstrations of spin-spin entanglement by optical and magnetic interactions. Magnetic coupling in particular is attractive for efficient and deterministic entanglement gates, but raises the problem of individual spin addressing at the necessary nanometer-scale separation. Current super-resolution techniques can reach this resolution, but are destructive to the states of nearby qubits. Here, we demonstrate the measurement of individual qubit states in a sub-diffraction cluster by selectively exciting spectrally distinguishable nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. We demonstrate super-resolution localization of single centers with nanometer spatial resolution, as well as individual control and readout of spin populations. These measurements indicate a readout-induced crosstalk on non-addressed qubits below $4\times10^{-2}$. This approach opens the door to high-speed control and measurement of qubit registers in mesoscopic spin clusters, with applications ranging from entanglement-enhanced sensors to error-corrected qubit registers to multiplexed quantum repeater nodes., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + supplementary information

A central challenge in quantum technologies based on atom-like defects is the efficient collection of the emitter's fluorescence. Optical antennas are appealing as they offer directional emission together with spontaneous emission rate enhancement across a broad emitter spectrum. In this work, we introduce and optimize metal-dielectric nanoantenna designs recessed into a diamond substrate and aligned with quantum emitters. We analyze trade-offs between external quantum efficiency, collection efficiency, Purcell factor, and overall collected photon rate. This analysis shows that an optimized metal-dielectric hybrid structure can increase the collected photon rate from a nitrogen vacancy center by over two orders of magnitude compared to a bare emitter. As a result, these metal-dielectric antennas should enable single-shot electron spin measurements of NV centers at room temperature., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We propose a general protocol for low-control refrigeration and thermometry of thermal qubits, which can be implemented using electronic spins in diamond. The refrigeration is implemented by a probe, consisting of a network of interacting spins. The protocol involves two operations: (i) free evolution of the probe; and (ii) a swap gate between one spin in the probe and the thermal qubit we wish to cool. We show that if the initial state of the probe falls within a suitable range, and the free evolution of the probe is both unital and conserves the excitation in the $z$-direction, then the cooling protocol will always succeed, with an efficiency that depends on the rate of spin dephasing and the swap gate fidelity. Furthermore, measuring the probe after it has cooled many qubits provides an estimate of their temperature. We provide a specific example where the probe is a Heisenberg spin chain, and suggest a physical implementation using electronic spins in diamond. Here the probe is constituted of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers, while the thermal qubits are dark spins. By using a novel pulse sequence, a chain of NV centers can be made to evolve according to a Heisenberg Hamiltonian. This proposal allows for a range of applications, such as NV-based nuclear magnetic resonance of photosensitive molecules kept in a dark spot on a sample, and it opens up possibilities for the study of quantum thermodynamics, environment-assisted sensing, and many-body physics.

We report on wide-field optically detected magnetic resonance imaging of nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVs) in type IIa polycrystalline diamond. These studies reveal a heterogeneous crystalline environment that produces a varied density of NV centers, including preferential orientation within some individual crystal grains, but preserves long spin coherence times. Using the native NVs as nanoscale sensors, we introduce a 3-dimensional strain imaging technique with high sensitivity ( $< 10^{-5}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$) and diffraction-limited resolution across a wide field of view.

The controlled creation of defect center---nanocavity systems is one of the outstanding challenges for efficiently interfacing spin quantum memories with photons for photon-based entanglement operations in a quantum network. Here, we demonstrate direct, maskless creation of atom-like single silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond nanostructures via focused ion beam implantation with $\sim 32$ nm lateral precision and $< 50$ nm positioning accuracy relative to a nanocavity. Moreover, we determine the Si+ ion to SiV center conversion yield to $\sim 2.5\%$ and observe a 10-fold conversion yield increase by additional electron irradiation. We extract inhomogeneously broadened ensemble emission linewidths of $\sim 51$ GHz, and close to lifetime-limited single-emitter transition linewidths down to $126 \pm13$ MHz corresponding to $\sim 1.4$-times the natural linewidth. This demonstration of deterministic creation of optically coherent solid-state single quantum systems is an important step towards development of scalable quantum optical devices.

The past decade has seen great advances in developing color centers in diamond for sensing, quantum information processing, and tests of quantum foundations. Increasingly, the success of these applications as well as fundamental investigations of light-matter interaction depend on improved control of optical interactions with color centers -- from better fluorescence collection to efficient and precise coupling with confined single optical modes. Wide ranging research efforts have been undertaken to address these demands through advanced nanofabrication of diamond. This review will cover recent advances in diamond nano- and microphotonic structures for efficient light collection, color center to nanocavity coupling, hybrid integration of diamond devices with other material systems, and the wide range of fabrication methods that have enabled these complex photonic diamond systems.

A central challenge in developing magnetically coupled quantum registers in diamond is the fabrication of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers with localization below ~20 nm to enable fast dipolar interaction compared to the NV decoherence rate. Here, we demonstrate the targeted, high throughput formation of NV centers using masks with a thickness of 270 nm and feature sizes down to ~1 nm. Super-resolution imaging resolves NVs with a full-width maximum distribution of $26\pm7$ nm and a distribution of NV-NV separations of $16\pm5$ nm.

A central aim of quantum information processing is the efficient entanglement of multiple stationary quantum memories via photons. Among solid-state systems, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond has emerged as an excellent optically addressable memory with second-scale electron spin coherence times. Recently, quantum entanglement and teleportation have been shown between two NV-memories, but scaling to larger networks requires more efficient spin-photon interfaces such as optical resonators. Here, we demonstrate such NV-nanocavity systems with optical quality factors approaching 10,000 and electron spin coherence times exceeding 200 $\mu$s using a silicon hard-mask fabrication process. This spin-photon interface is integrated with on-chip microwave striplines for coherent spin control, providing an efficient quantum memory for quantum networks.

Solid-state quantum sensors are attracting wide interest because of their exceptional sensitivity at room temperature. In particular, the spin properties of individual nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond make it an outstanding nanoscale sensor of magnetic fields, electric fields, and temperature, under ambient conditions. Recent work on ensemble NV-based magnetometers, inertial sensors, and clocks have employed $N$ unentangled color centers to realize a factor of up to $\sqrt{N}$ improvement in sensitivity. However, to realize fully this signal enhancement, new techniques are required to excite efficiently and to collect fluorescence from large NV ensembles. Here, we introduce a light-trapping diamond waveguide (LTDW) geometry that enables both high fluorescence collection ($\sim20\%$) and efficient pump absorption achieving an effective path length exceeding $1$ meter in a millimeter-sized device. The LTDW enables in excess of $2\%$ conversion efficiency of pump photons into optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) fluorescence, a \textit{three orders of magnitude} improvement over previous single-pass geometries. This dramatic enhancement of ODMR signal enables broadband measurements of magnetic field and temperature at less than $1$ Hz, a frequency range inaccessible by dynamical decoupling techniques. We demonstrate $\sim 1~\mbox{nT}/\sqrt{\mbox{Hz}}$ magnetic field sensitivity for $0.1$ Hz to $10$ Hz and a thermal sensitivity of $\sim 400 ~\mu\mbox{K}/\sqrt{\mbox{Hz}}$ and estimate a spin projection limit at $\sim 0.36$ fT/$\sqrt{\mbox{Hz}}$ and $\sim 139~\mbox{pK}/\sqrt{\mbox{Hz}}$, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We report on controlling the spontaneous emission (SE) rate of a molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) monolayer coupled with a planar photonic crystal (PPC) nanocavity. Spatially resolved photoluminescence (PL) mapping shows strong variations of emission when the MoS$_2$ monolayer is on the PPC cavity, on the PPC lattice, on the air gap, and on the unpatterned gallium phosphide substrate. Polarization dependences of the cavity-coupled MoS$_2$ emission show a more than 5 times stronger extracted PL intensity than the un-coupled emission, which indicates an underlying cavity mode Purcell enhancement of MoS$_2$ SE rate exceeding a factor of 70., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures
