1. Identificación de genotipos de papa con tolerancia al déficit hídrico

Abstract

Con el objetivo de identificar genotipos de papa (Solanum spp.) con tolerancia al déficit hídrico, se implementó un ensayo en invernadero en la EESC del INIAP. Se evaluaron 39 genotipos con y sin déficit hídrico. Las variables evaluadas fueron: potencial de recuperación (PR), contenido relativo de agua (CRA), potencial hídrico (Ψ h), número de tubérculos por planta (NTP), rendimiento por planta (RP) y promedio geométrico del rendimiento (PGR). Se encontró un efecto significativo de genotipos (G), déficit hídrico (E) y su interacción G x E. La variedad INIAP-Josefina mostró tolerancia al déficit hídrico en la mayoría de variables. Esta investigación mostró genotipos con un mejor PR que otros, a los 16 días de déficit hídric o y a las 24 horas de recuperación. Para CRA se encontraron genotipos a los 13 y 16 días de déficit hídrico con valores superiores a los 66,98 y 62,98% respectivamente. Los clones 11-9-108, 12-4-145 e INIAP-Josefina con más de 9 tubérculos por planta se ubicaron en los primeros rangos, mientras INIAP-Josefina, 11-9-85, 11-9-45 y 12-4-50 presentaron rendimientos superiores a 132 g/planta. El PGR estableció a INIAP-Josefina, 11-9-45 y 11-9-85 en los primeros rangos con valores superiores a 122,54. Al evaluar el Ψh con déficit hídrico se encontró a INIAP-Catalina, INIAP-Estela y los clones 11-9-66, 11-9-85, 11-9-28 y 11-9-92 mostraron el menor efecto del estrés hídrico con valores menores. Existió variación en la respuesta de los genotipos al déficit hídrico, se han identificado genotipos con tolerancia que continuarán el proceso de evaluación dentro del esquema de mejoramiento.

Abstract

Abarca la climatología e hidrología de los departamentos de Tacna, Moquegua y Puno, con este fin describe el régimen pluvial y analiza los ciclos, duración e intensidad de las sequías, y determina la magnitud y velocidad de avenidas fluviales extremas. Evalúa además, el impacto económico del clima, la hidrología, las sequías y las inundaciones y examina la disponibilidad del recurso hídrico tanto en caudal como en oportunidad de uso. Finalmente, incide en la importancia de efectuar un uso óptimo del recurso agua particularmente en la agricultura y la necesidad de culminar los proyectos existentes de derivación de aguas hacia la cuenca del Pacífico.

Abstract

A nivel mundial, el papel del sector privado en el asesoramiento agrícola ha venido incrementándose desde los años ochenta y noventa. Una muestra de tal evolución se observa en el valle del Mantaro (Perú), en un contexto de pequeña agricultura. Para evaluar sus consecuencias, se realizaron entrevistas con proveedores deinsumos, extensionistas y productores. En este caso, el asesoramiento privado se realiza de manera asociada a la venta de insumos, lo cual, si bien favorece el acceso de un apoyo técnico a casi todos los productores, no considera sus necesidades globales. Esta investigación muestra la importancia de una mejor coordinación entre los actores públicos y privados del sistema de asesoramiento agrícola.

Abstract

El resultado del estudio es que 1500 ha., que comprenden las zonas denominadas la Boya y San José – Chulé, están afectadas por salinidad y mal drenaje y 570 ha. Están ubicadas en la zona de inundación estacional del río Camaná. Los problemas de drenaje de este valle son básicamente causados por el mal manejo del agua de riego. Esta se emplea en forma libre y sin control. En lo que a desagüe de excesos de riego se refiere, este no es eficiente pues el actual sistema carece de un adecuado mantenimiento. Propone hacer una evaluación de los actuales problemas de salinidad y drenaje que afectan el valle, a fin de servir de base para la selección de una zona aparente para ubicar un área piloto de drenaje. Comprende mediciones del nivel de la napa freática y su salinidad. Además, de medir la conductividad hidráulica del subsuelo y de observar el estado actual de los drenes existentes salidas al mar y el manejo del agua de riego en el Valle.

Abstract

International audience; As decisions on climate change adaptation involve stakeholders with different values, beliefs and attitudes (VBA), decision outcomes depend on how stakeholders interact and how power is distributed. In this paper, we explore the VBA of stakeholders involved in three water management projects focusing on dams, micro-reservoirs, or wetlands in a Peruvian watershed facing droughts. We apply a framework with the core ideas of the hydrosocial cycle, the decision context perspective, and the VBA hierarchy to show how stakeholders’ perspectives and power influence practices on the ground. The analysis of VBA reveals three different perspectives on water management held by different stakeholder groups. First, a community-based perspective, frequent among local communities, favors micro-reservoirs managed by communities. Second, an infrastructure-based perspective, frequent among public sector stakeholders, shows a preference for dams managed by the private sector. Third, a nature-based perspective, with a preference for wetlands managed by the public sector, is found across stakeholder groups. In the three water management projects, different power distributions determine which VBA dominate and influence practices on the ground. Dams on the ground represent power from the public and private sectors, while micro-reservoirs represent local grassroot control. In the wetland project, the outcomes of the evolving hydrosocial cycle are still unclear and will depend on how multiple perspectives are considered. Examining and questioning the decision context in which adaptation occurs can help excluded stakeholders achieve more power and agency and tackle the fundamental question of ‘adaptation of what and for whom’.

Abstract

International audience; Establishment of an embryo cryobank will permit genetic pool preservation of both native breeds and scientifically valuable strains of guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). The aim of the present work was to test a simple vitrification procedure usable directly in field conditions. Female guinea pigs between 6 and 12 months of age weighing from 1.0 to 1.5 kg were housed under farming conditions in an experimental station in La Molina National Agrarian University of Lima (Peru). The protocol of oestrus synchronisation and embryo production was described in our previous studies (Grégoire et al. 2012 Theriogenology 78, 842–847). An ovariohysterectomy was performed 72 h after fertilisation and embryos were flushed from the uterus horn and oviducts with 1 mL lactated Ringer’s solution supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum. Only grade 1 and 2 embryos at 8–16 cells/early morulae stage according to IETS guidelines were selected for cryopreservation and for in vitro control. Embryos (n = 24) were equilibrated for 5 min at room temperature (22–25°C) in a droplet of VS1 solution: VS1 = embryo-holding medium® ([HM], IMV Technologies) + 0.1 M trehalose + 5% ethylene glycol (EG) + 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Then, embryos were transferred to a droplet of VS2 solution (VS2 = HM + 0.2 M trehalose + 10% EG + 10% DMSO) for 3 min, and finally transferred into a VS3 solution (VS3 = HM + 0.4 M trehalose + 20% EG + 20% DMSO) for 30 s. A batch of four embryos was loaded into a 0.25-mL plastic straw using two columns of HM + 0.5 M sucrose separated by air bubbles from the central column (18–20 µL) containing the embryos into VS3. The straws were plunged immediately into liquid nitrogen after VS3 bath. Straws were warmed for 10 s in air at room temperature and 20 s in a 25°C water bath. Immediately after thawing, embryos were expelled and diluted successively 5 min in HM + 0.5 M sucrose, 5 min in HM + 0.25 M sucrose, and 5 min in HM. All the embryos were then in vitro cultured in potassium-enriched simplex optimised medium (EmbryoMax® KSOM Embryo Culture, Millipore) for 48 h at 38.5°C, under 5% CO2 in air and 98% humidity. In vitro survival of embryos was assessed by their ability to develop into hatching or hatched blastocysts after the culture period. A control group of 17 fresh embryos was also in vitro cultured directly after collection in order to test the efficiency of the culture medium. All fresh 8–16 cell embryos developed to the expanded blastocyst stage (17/17) after in vitro culture in KSOM. Regarding the vitrified embryos (8–16 cells to first morulae), all were intact (24/24) after thawing and 2 hours of in vitro culture, and 10/24 (41.7%; 95% Clopper-Pearson confidence interval [22.11;63.36]) reached the expanded blastocyst stage after 48 h of in vitro culture. These results lead us to consider KSOM as an appropriate culture medium for embryo development in guinea pigs. For the first time, vitrified-thawed embryos have been evaluated through a 48 h in vitro culture in Cavia porcellus species.

Abstract

International audience; This article proposes through the theoretical position of a branch of cognitivism: cognitive grammar, the cognitive strategy that the human being executes when using the language. The objective of the study is to logically graph the cognitive processes in the function of thinking-meaning, of expressing oneself linguistically. The application of the cognitive strategy of the use of language is made effective in the linguistic pragmatics of the sociolect of the Sars CoV-2 pandemic. The research methodology is qualitative of the discourse analysis type. The results show the cognitive natureof linguistic innovations and show the executive process in the thinking-meaning of the statements. The main conclusion is that the linguistic-cognitive analysis of the proposed discourse graphs and shows the cognitive condition of the language. It is recommended to apply the analysis model in the interpretation of various speeches.; El presente artículo propone a través de la postura teórica de una rama del cognitivismo: la gramática cognitiva, la estrategia cognitiva que el ser humano ejecuta al usar la lengua. El objetivo del estudio es graficar de forma lógica los procesos cognitivos en la función del pensar-significar, del expresarse lingüísticamente. La aplicación de la estrategia cognitiva del uso del lenguaje se efectiviza en la pragmática lingüística del sociolecto de la pandemia Sars CoV-2. La metodología de la investigación es cualitativa del tipo análisis del discurso. Los resultados evidencian la naturaleza cognitiva de las innovaciones lingüísticas y grafican el proceso ejecutivo en el pensar-significar de los enunciados. La conclusión principal es que el análisis lingüístico-cognitivo del discurso propuesto grafica y evidencia la condición cognitiva del lenguaje. Se recomienda aplicar el modelo de análisis en la interpretación de diversos discursos.

Abstract

International audience; The cultural ecosystem services (CES) construct has evolved to accommodate multiple worldviews, knowledge systems and conceptualizations of nature and values, including relational and mental health values.Cultural ecosystem services research and practice has mostly focused on cognitive ways of constructing and expressing intangible values of, and relationships with, nature. But our non-material relationships with nature are not exclusively cognitive: sensory and affective processes are fundamental to how we build, enact and experience these relationships.Building on the core ideas of relational values, embodied experiences and connectedness with nature, we present a simple framework to explore the sensory, affective and cognitive dimensions of human–nature interactions, as well as the settings and activities that frame them.We demonstrate its use in a case study in the Peruvian Andes, where we applied an inductive, exploratory approach to elicit personal imageries and imaginings related to nature, place and recreation. The narratives shared were rich with symbolism and personal sensory experiences, emotions and memories, which the interviewees linked with general assertions about people, place and nature.We discuss the usefulness of such a perspective for CES research, and for human well-being, environmental justice and landscape management.

Abstract

24 Páginas Daucus has traditionally been estimated to comprise 21–25 species, but a recent study expanded the genus to c. 40 species. The present study uses ten nuclear orthologues to examine 125 accessions, including 40 collections of 11 species (D. annuus, D. arcanus, D. decipiens, D. durieua, D. edulis, D. gracilis, D. minusculus, D. montanus, D. pumilus, D. setifolius and D. tenuissimus) newly examined with nuclear orthologues. As in previous nuclear orthologue studies, Daucus resolves into two well-defined clades, and groups different accessions of species together. Maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses provide concordant results, but SVD quartets reveals many areas of disagreement of species within these two major clades. With maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses Daucus montanus (hexaploid) is resolved as an allopolyploid between D. pusillus (diploid) and D. glochidiatus (tetraploid), whereas with SVD quartets it is resolved as an allopolyploid between D. glochidiatus and an unknown Daucus sp. We propose the new combination Daucus junceus (Durieua juncea) for a neglected species endemic to the south-western Iberian Peninsula often referred to as D. setifolius, and we place D. arcanus in synonymy with D. pusillus. Abstract

Daily precipitation concentration in the Amazon basin (AB) is characterized using concentration index (CI), which is computed from HYBAM Observed Precipitation (HOP) data set, for 1980–2009 period. The ability of four satellite precipitation data sets (TMPA V7, TMPA RT, CMORPH and PERSIANN) to estimate CI is evaluated for 2001–2009 period. Our findings provide new information about the spatial irregularity of daily rainfall distribution over the AB. In addition, the spatial distribution of CI values is not completely explained by rainfall seasonality, which highlights the influence of different weather systems over the AB. The results of rainfall concentration indicate that the distribution of daily rainfall is more regular over northwest (northern Peru) and central Andes. Conversely, Roraima region and a large area of Bolivian Amazon register the highest irregularity in the daily rainfall. Bolivian Amazon also represents regions where the large percentage of total rainfall arises from extreme events (>90th percentile). Heavy rainfall episodes over Roraima region are induced by humidity influx come from Caribbean region, while heavy rainfall events over Bolivian Amazon and Andes region are induced by the northwards propagation of cold and dry air along both sides of Andes Mountains, but only propagate in all tropospheric levels for the Andes. The results also show that PERSIANN and TMPA7 data sets better estimates the daily precipitation concentration for whole AB, but with a relative error 8%. CI estimated from satellites does not agree well with HOP over the Andes and northern Peruvian Amazon. On the other hand, the temporal variability of CI can partly be detected using CMORPH and TMPAV7 data sets over the Peruvian Andes, and central and southern Brazil. Errors in CI estimating might be related to inaccurate estimation of daily rainfall. Finally, we conclude that satellite‐based precipitation data sets are useful for analysing rainfall concentration in some regions of AB.

Abstract

International audience; During recent years, mass mortalities of cultured scallops became more frequent in Peruvian bays. One of the main drivers related to these mortalities was hypoxic events. This study was designed to understand the hypoxia phenomenon in these bays and to assess how the Peruvian scallop, Argopecten purpuratus, can cope with reduced oxygen levels in seawater based on individual size. First, we analyzed the relationships between dissolved oxygen saturation and other environmental parameters (the Coastal El Niño Index, temperature, salinity and pH) in bottom seawater, the frequency and intensity of hypoxic events in two main culture areas (Sechura and Paracas Bays), and their relationship with scallop mass mortalities. Then, we performed experiments with two size groups of A. purpuratus (31 and 80 mm shell height; seed and commercial size, respectively) to assess their respective survival time under severe hypoxia (1% oxygen saturation) at 16°C and a salinity of 35. Finally, the results of the field records and the experimental data are used to suggest ways to improve scallop cultivation along the Peruvian coast.

Abstract

Inbreeding, the mating between genetically related individuals, often results in reduced survival and fecundity of offspring, relative to outcrossing. Yet, high inbreeding rates are commonly observed in seaweeds, suggesting compensatory reproductive traits may affect the costs and benefits of the mating system. We experimentally manipulated inbreeding levels in controlled crossing experiments, using gametophytes from 19 populations of Macrocystis pyrifera along its Eastern Pacific coastal distribution (EPC). The objective was to investigate the effects of male-female kinship on female fecundity and fertility, to estimate inbreeding depression in the F1 progeny, and to assess the variability of these effects among different regions and habitats of the EPC. Results revealed that the presence and kinship of males had a significant effect on fecundity and fertility of female gametophytes. Females left alone or in the presence of sibling males express the highest gametophyte size, number, and size of oogonia, suggesting they were able to sense the presence and the identity of their mates before gamete contact. The opposite trend was observed for the production of embryos per female gametes, indicating higher costs of selfing and parthenogenesis than outcrossing on fertility. However, the increased fecundity compensated for the reduced fertility, leading to a stable overall reproductive output. Inbreeding also affected morphological traits of juvenile sporophytes, but not their heatwave tolerance. The male-female kinship effect was stronger in high-latitude populations, suggesting that females from low-latitude marginal populations might have evolved to mate with any male gamete to guarantee reproductive success. Abstract

Field photographs of plant species are crucial for research and conservation, but the lack of a centralized database makes them difficult to locate. We surveyed 25 online databases of field photographs and found that they harboured only about 53% of the approximately 125,000 vascular plant species of the Americas. These results reflect the urgent need for a centralized database that can both integrate and complete the photographic record of the world’s flora. Field photographs are essential for research and conservation, but are difficult to access since there is no central database or connection between archives. The 25 leading databases hold only 53% of the plant species of the Americas, illustrating the need for increased work on collecting and standardizing this valuable data.

Abstract

The biodiversity and productivity of the Amazon floodplain depend on nutrients and organic matter transported with suspended sediments. Nevertheless, there are still fundamental unknowns about how hydrological and rainfall variability influence sediment flux in the Amazon River. To address this gap, we analyzed 3069 sediment samples collected every 10 days during 1995–2014 at five gauging stations located in the main rivers. We have two distinct fractions of suspended sediments, fine (clay and silt) and coarse (sand), which followed contrasting seasonal and long-term patterns. By taking these dynamics into account, it was estimated, for first time, in the Amazon plain, that the suspended sediment flux separately measured approximately 60% fine and 40% coarse sediment. We find that the fine suspended sediments flux is linked to rainfall and higher coarse suspended sediment flux is related with discharge. Additionally this work presents the time lag between rainfall and discharge, which is related to the upstream area of the gauging. This result is an important contribution to knowledge of biological and geomorphological issues in Amazon basin.

Abstract

Las turberas alto andinas, llamadas tambien bofedales, presentan altas tasas de acumulacion de carbono y sensibilidad a los cambios climaticos, motivo por el cual son consideradas como excelentes registros para estudios ambientales de alta resolucion. El presente estudio reconstruye, a traves del analisis del testigo APA01 ubicado en la cabecera de cuenca del rio Cachi en Ayacucho, la historia paleoambiental de los ultimos 2 500 anos. Las dataciones del testigo se determinaron por radiocarbono usando un Espectrometro de Masas con Acelerador de Particulas (AMS), la estimacion del carbono organico se realizo a traves de un analizador elemental PDZ Europa ANCA-GSL. Los resultados evidencian cambios en las tasas de acumulacion de carbono y en el clima local durante el Holoceno Tardio; especificamente durante los ultimos 2 500 anos antes del presente. Durante el periodo denominado Anomalia Climatica Medieval (ACM), alrededor de 1040 Despues de Cristo (DC) a 1300 DC, el clima mas seco provoco una desaceleracion en la acumulacion de carbono debido a una reduccion del nivel freatico que induce a una reduccion en la produccion de materia organica con un pico negativo en la concentracion de carbono. Al final de la Pequena Edad de Hielo (PEH), entre 1600 DC y 1890 DC, la acumulacion de carbono presento alta variabilidad. Posteriormente, el ambiente de turba se caracteriza principalmente por un aumento considerable de las tasas de acumulacion de carbono debido al aumento de la tasa de sedimentacion que posiblemente este relacionado con el retroceso de los glaciares en los Andes centrales. El reciente aumento drastico en la tasa de sedimentacion y la reduccion de las concentraciones de carbono advierten de una posible disminucion futura de estos ecosistemas.

Abstract

International audience; High-altitude cushion peatlands contain important records for high-resolution palaeoenvironmental studies, due to their high carbon accumulation rates and sensitivity to climatic changes. In this study, we present the paleoenvironmental history for the last 2 500 years based on the study of APA01 core, located in the headwaters of the Cachi river basin in Ayacucho. Radiocarbon dating by an accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) and by an elemental PDZ Europa ANCA-GSL analyzer to estimate particulated organic carbon were determined. Our results reveal changes in the peatlands during the Late Holocene. The palaeo climate varied significantly during the last 2 500 years. During the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (ACM) from around 1040 DC (Before Christ - BC, in spanish paper) to 1300 DC, the drier climate caused a slowdown in peat accumulation due to a reduced water table inducing a reduced organic matter production with a negative peak of carbon concentration. At the end of the Small Ice Age (PEH), between 1600 DC and 1890 DC, carbon accumulation showed high variability. Subsequently, the peat environment is mainly characterized by a considerable increase of carbon accumulation rates due to high sedimentation rates that is possibly related to the retreat of glaciers in the Central Andes. The recent drastic increase in the sedimentation rate and the reduction of carbon concentrations are a warning of a possible future decline of these ecosystems.

Abstract

We analyze the future state of Quelccaya Ice Cap (QIC), the world’s largest tropical ice cap with a summit elevation of 5680 m a.s.l., which, in terms of its elevation range (~5300–5680 m a.s.l.), is representative of many low-elevation glacierized sites in the tropical Andes. CMIP5 model projections of air temperature (Ta) at QIC indicate a warming of about 2.4 °C and 5.4 °C (respectively) for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios by the end of the 21st century, resulting in a pronounced increase in freezing level height (FLH). The impact of this warming on the QIC was quantified using equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) projections. The change in the ELA was quantified based on an empirical ELA–FLH relationship, and calibrated with observations of the highest annual snowline altitude (SLA) derived from LANDSAT data. Results show that from the mid-2050s onwards, the ELA will be located above the QIC summit in the RCP8.5 scenario. At that time, surface mass balance at QIC and most tropical glaciers at similar elevations will become increasingly negative, leading to their eventual complete disappearance. Our analysis further corroborates that elevation-dependent warming (EDW) contributes significantly to the enhanced warming over the QIC, and that EDW at Quelccaya depends on the rate of anthropogenic forcing.

Abstract

The Peruvian scallop (Argopecten purpuratus) is the second main contributor to the total catch of mollusks in Peru, after jumbo squid. There are two main scallop banks populations in northern Peru: Lobos de Tierra Island (LTI) and Sechura Bay (SB). Despite a continuous, intense relocation of seeds from LTI, the natural bank population still persists there. To understand this, we studied larval connectivity between LTI and SB using the first invertebrate larval transport biophysical model developed in the region. Larval local retention were 2.4% and 1.57% on average at LTI and SB respectively, while larval transport from SB to LTI was 0.02% on average and 0.07% in the opposite direction. Both larval retention and larval transport increased with spawning depth and were highest in austral summer. Two main larval transport paths from SB to LTI were identified, resulting from a combination of horizontal mesoscale circulation patterns and vertical flows. Potential management implications for these natural banks are discussed.

Abstract

Study region: Upper Madeira Basin (975,500 km2) in Southern Amazonia, which is suffering a biophysical transition, involving deforestation and changes in rainfall regime. Study focus: The evolution of the runoff coefficient (Rc: runoff/rainfall) is examined as an indicator of the environmental changes (1982–2017). New hydrological insights for the region: At an annual scale, the Rc at Porto Velho station declines while neither the basin-averaged rainfall nor the runoff change. During the low-water period Rc and runoff diminish while no changes are observed in rainfall. This cannot be explained by increase of evapotranspiration since the basin-averaged actual evapotranspiration decreases. To explain the decrease of Rc, a regional analysis is undertaken. While the characteristic rainfall-runoff time-lag (CT) at Porto Velho basin is estimated to 60 days, CT is higher (65–75 days) in the south and lower (50 days) over the Amazon-Andes transition regions. It is found that 1) the southern basin (south of 14 °S) best explains low-level Porto Velho runoff, 2) in the south, rainfall diminishes and the frequency of dry days increases. Both features explain the diminution of the runoff and the Rc in Porto Velho. Moreover, the increasing dryness in the south compensates for the rainfall and frequency of wet days (>10 mm) increase north of 14 °S and explains the lack of basin-averaged rainfall trends of the upper Madeira basin. Abstract

International audience; The issues of power and equity are gaining attention in research on ecosystem services (ESs). Stakeholders benefiting from ESs are not necessarily able or authorized to participate in ES management. Thus, we have proposed an analytical framework to identify and qualify stakeholders' roles in relation to ES flows. Building on existing frameworks in the ES literature, we aimed to unravel the different direct and indirect management contributions to ES flows and link them to ES benefits. Direct management targets the functioning of ecosystems, the flows of services, and the benefits received by society, whereas indirect management facilitates, controls, or restricts the activities of direct managers. We applied this framework to the Mariño watershed (Peru) to describe stakeholders' roles using a set of 8 ESs. We have discussed the implications of our findings in terms of equity and power distribution. We conducted face-to-face semistructured interviews with representatives of 52 watershed stakeholders to understand how they managed and benefited from ESs. We used statistical analysis (permutation tests) to detect significant differences in the number of received and managed ESs among stakeholder sectors, i.e., civil society, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), business, and the public sector, and scales, from local to national levels. Indirect forms of ES management were more frequent than direct ones for all ESs. Water quantity, water quality, and agricultural production were managed by the largest number of stakeholder types. The differences in the number of stakeholder types benefiting from and managing ESs could result from intentional choices, e.g., preferences for local benefits. We also found clear differences in the identity of stakeholders who managed or benefited from ESs. Local stakeholders and the business sector benefited from a higher number of ESs, and public organizations and NGOs were most involved in ES management. More equitable governance of ESs should aim to integrate more diverse stakeholders into decision making. Further empirical research could use our framework to explore the factors determining stakeholders' roles and power distribution. There is a particular need to understand how rights, endowments, and entitlements, as well as spatial configuration, underpin inequities in different social and cultural contexts.

Abstract

International audience; We investigated the rhythm of micro-striae formation in the shell of Argopecten purpuratus and environmental influence on micro-growth increments by monitoring growth over a 98-day period between April and July 2007 under bottom and suspended culture (2m above the bottom) rearing conditions. The transfer of individuals to the study site induced the formation of a notable growth mark that allowed us to count the number of micro-striae formed between transfer and sampling dates. Micro-striae counts showed a deposition rate of one stria per day independent of rearing condition. This result allowed us to analyse the relationships between growth increments and environmental conditions. We therefore examined the deviations between observed growth rates and growth rates predicted from a Von Bertalanffy growth function. Cross-correlation analysis revealed significant correlations, without time-lag, between these deviations and both particulate organic carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the bottom treatment. Additionally, we observed negative correlations with temperature and current speed at this depth with time-lags of 1 and 10 days respectively. In the suspended treatment, we observed a significant negative correlation with temperature, only with a 12-day lag-time. Our results show that growth response to environmental variability is not always instantaneous. This delay can be explained by the time delay over which metabolic processes need to be performed (e.g. digestion, use/movements of reserves, growth, reproduction). Further modeling studies could help to better understand these processes.

International audience; Assessments of ecosystem services (ES) improve our understanding of social-ecological systems and can support decision-making and policy development. Integrative ES assessments are challenging because of the diversity of ES, ecosystems that supply services, and social groups that benefit from ES. Challenges are the greatest for nonmaterial benefits that people receive from nature (often called cultural ES), for example, through recreation, aesthetic experiences, spiritual enrichment, or cognitive development, particularly because of their subjectivity. As the definition of nonmaterial benefits differs between cultures and social groups, there is a need to assess cultural ES with transdisciplinary methods that recognize multiple worldviews on nature and explicitly link assessment results with the people concerned by ES. In other terms, the assessment should strongly integrate the “what” and the “for whom” questions, particularly because responses to the latter question determine how the former question should be addressed. We assessed several cultural ES related to recreation, scenic beauty and spiritual values in the Mariño watershed (Apurímac region) in Peru using several complementary methods, ranging from participatory methods (focus group discussions, interviews, and surveys) to big data modelling (analysis of geotagged pictures from the Internet). Discourse analysis applied to interview content allowed to understand the diversity of views on the nonmaterial interactions between people and ecosystems and helped us develop a framework for analyzing such interactions. Surveys showed what landscape or ecosystem attributes explained cultural ES, for example aesthetic preferences for certain landscape elements, and how ES perceptions differed among different social groups (e.g. by gender, age, and origin). The analysis of geotagged data from the Internet also revealed preferences on ES attributes and the location of ecosystem providing high levels of nonmaterial benefits. Results allow to discuss the complementary of different approaches for assessing ES related to recreation, scenic beauty and spiritual values.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we explore a speleothem δ18O record from Palestina cave, northwestern Peru, at a site on the eastern side of the Andes cordillera, in the upper Amazon Basin. The δ18O record is interpreted as a proxy for South American Summer Monsoon (SASM) intensity and allows the reconstruction of its variability during the last 1600 years. Two periods of anomalous changes in the climate mean state corresponding to the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA) periods identified in the Northern Hemisphere are recognized in the record, in which decreased and increased SASM activity, respectively, have been documented. Variations in SASM activity between the MCA and the LIA seem to be larger over the northern part of the continent, suggesting a latitudinal dependence of the MCA footprint. Our results, based on time series, composite and wavelet analyses, suggest that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) plays an relevant role for SASM modulation on multidecadal scales (∼65 years), especially during dry periods such as the MCA. Composite analyses, applied to evaluate the influence of the AMO on the Palestina cave δ18O and other δ18O-derived SASM reconstructions, allow insight into the spatial footprints of the AMO over tropical South America and highlight differences between records during key studied periods. This work also reveals that replicating regional climate signals from different sites, and using different proxies is absolutely essential for a comprehensive understanding of past changes in SASM activity.

Abstract

International audience; The response of Argopecten purpuratus (Peruvian scallop) to environmental conditions was studied in the upwelling-influenced Bay of Paracas (Peru). Scallops growth and reproduction were monitored weekly over a 7-month period under two conditions (culture depths): on the bottom and 2 m above (suspended culture). At the same time, a high-frequency environmental monitoring was realized at the aforementioned depths. The results indicate that environmental conditions in the Bay are highly variable, especially during the summer: temperature fluctuations up to 8∘C were recorded in less than one day while oxic conditions ranged from oversaturation to anoxia. Milky-turquoise waters discoloration events (sulphide presence suspected) were simultaneously observed together with anoxic conditions and sudden temperature drops. Increased stratification and upwelling favorable winds during the summer might be partly responsible for the observed environmental variability. Higher somatic and gonadal growth were observed in scallops growing in suspended culture compare with bottom culture. This pattern might be related to different environmental conditions at culture depth: turbidity was lower in suspended culture and hypoxic conditions occurred only 18% of the whole study period versus 48% on the bottom. The Gonadosomatic index varied according to an approx. 30-day cycle between winter and late spring and it was synchronous between the different scallop size groups. During summer, when milky waters and anoxic events occurred frequently, cessation of reproduction, somatic weight losses and increased scallop mortality were observed. Exposure to severe hypoxia and related environmental conditions clearly affected scallop bioenergetics and subsequently growth and reproduction. In addition, the occurrence of milky waters harmed the survival of the Peruvian scallop in culture. These results are discussed in terms of management strategies for sustainable scallop aquaculture in the Bay.

International audience; Assessment of ecosystem services (ES) can improve decision-making and policy development on land use and the environment. As the determinants of supply and demand for ES are spatially variable, ES assessments often need to be spatially explicit. ES mapping has gained increasing attention in research and has been used to identify priority areas for ES provision or with most pressing threats on ES. Mapping can be combined with scenarios of environmental, political, social or economic to investigate future ES changes, define sensitive areas to change and estimate the impact of changes on society. ES mapping is more often applied to provisioning and regulation services rather than cultural services. Among cultural ES (e.g., scenic beauty, recreation, spiritual, heritage, etc.), the recreation-related ES are the most often mapped because they are relatively simple to quantify (e.g., based on site visits), compared to other cultural services whose assessment require to understand personal preferences, beliefs or spiritual values (e.g., aesthetics or sense of place). We assessed several cultural ES related to recreation, scenic beauty and spiritual values in the Mariño watershed (Apurímac region) in Peru using several methods with a focus on spatial variations. We used participatory mapping methods during workshops and interviews to understand the spatial distribution of the supply and use of ES. We also used surveys to analyze what landscape or ecosystem attributes explain cultural ES, for example aesthetic preferences for certain landscape elements. We then used those attributes to map ES supply and we compared the maps produced by the two approaches (direct participatory mapping vs. mapping with attributes). We also compared differences in ES maps resulting from different information sources and stakeholders. Results allow to discuss the pros and cons of different approaches applied to ES related to recreation, scenic beauty and spiritual values.

Abstract

International audience; Research efforts are unevenly distributed between categories of ecosystem services, with regulating services receiving more interest from scientists than provisioning and cultural services. Whereas food provision is the most commonly studied provisioning services, products collected from ecosystems for medicinal and aromatic purposes are overlooked. Ethnopharmacologists have studied the contribution of wild plants to human well-being, but there have been few attempts to relate this contribution to the concept of ecosystem services. Existing studies highlighted the fact that the poorest populations are the most dependent on biological products for their two contributions to human health (medicine) and livelihoods (incomes through medicinal product trade). In developing countries, the cost and the accessibility of formal health care systems explains the use of alternative medicine and medicinal plants even though it has been observed that people may also prefer traditional medicine for cultural, religious or spiritual reasons. Plant collector are often rural dwellers that are economically marginalized, such as landless people or women. Using semi-structured interviews and participative workshops, we identified the most used wild medicinal plants in two watersheds of Apurimac region, Peru. We analyzed their distribution and harvesting patterns (maps of ecosystem service supply or use) and we described their uses and contributions to different component of well-being. Results showed that most people collected wild plants for medicinal purposes and that more than 80% of interviewees had a strong to medium economic dependence to plant harvesting. These elements offer interesting insight for local decision-makers since a restriction or control of harvest could deeply affect livelihoods with high economic dependence. Small-scale cultivation and the diffusion of sustainable harvesting practices could be considered as alternative strategies for wild plant conservation.

Abstract

International audience; This paper documents the spatiotemporal evolution of wet-day and dry-day frequency (WDF and DDF) in the western Amazon, its relationships with oceanic and atmospheric variability and possible impact on vegetation. WDF and DDF changed significantly during the 1980–2009 period (p < 0.05). An increase in WDF is observed after 1995 over the northern part of the western Amazon (Marañón basin). The average annual value of WDF changed from 22 days/yr before 1995 to 34 days after that date (+55% after 1995). In contrast, DDF increased significantly over the central and southern part of this region (Ucayali basin) after 1986. Average annual DDF was 16.2 days before 1986 and 23.8 days afterward (+47% after 1986). Interannual variability in WDF appears to be modulated by changes in Pacific SST and the Walker cell during the November–March season. This mechanism enhances convective activity over the northern part of the western Amazon. The increase in DDF is related to warming of the North Tropical Atlantic SST, which produces changes in the Hadley cell and subsidence over the central and the southern western Amazon. More intense seasonal hydrological extremes in the western Amazon therefore appear to be related to changes in WDF and DDF that occurred in 1995 and 1986, respectively. During the 2001–2009 period, an index of vegetation condition (NDVI) appears negatively correlated with DDF (r = -0.95; p < 0.0001). This suggests that vegetation in the western Amazon is mainly water limited, rather than light limited and indicates that the vegetation is highly sensitive to concentration of rainfall.

National audience; Dans la région nord-ouest du bassin amazonien, on observe des variabilités saisonnière etinterannuelle très importantes des hauteurs d’eau des rivières. Un marnage d’en moyenne 9mètres autorise des cultures de décrue sur les berges et dans les plaines d’inondation, une pêcheplus aisée dans les points d’eau restants. Mais la chasse est rendue plus difficile car elle s’opèresur de vastes territoires. En conséquence, on observe une variation saisonnière de ladisponibilité et du coût de la nourriture. Produits agricoles et poissons sont plus abondants etmoins chers pendant la saison d’étiage tandis que les produits de la chasse deviennent plusrares. Nous montrerons que les années de très fortes crues ou sécheresses, devenues trèsfréquentes depuis les années 1990, modifient elles-aussi les niveaux de production et les prixdes aliments. Ces travaux sont réalisés à partir d’enquêtes sur le terrain et des donnéesstatistiques d’organismes publics.

Abstract

International audience; The water level of the Amazon and of its tributaries varies significantly from one season to another. For instance, at Iquitos station (Peru), the water level varies from 18 meters in May-June to 8 meters in September-October. That is why, during the low-flow period, cultivating becomes possible and is important on the riverbanks and in the inundation plains. Agricultural production in a family-based system on the riverbanks and inundation plains is very important in terms of guarantee of supply for food security. In order to understand the important relation between agriculture, food security and hydrological system some characteristics of the local agriculture in the Amazonian region located between Iquitos (Peru) and the triple frontier between Brazil, Peru and Colombia are first presented using results from field observations, survey and data from the Peruvian and Brazilian Agricultural agencies. Then, information about the interannual variability (1980-2014) of the hydrological cycle of the Solimões River are presented: discussion and definition of the dates of the beginning and of the end of the low-flow period, duration of the low flow period, velocity of the water level changes during the increasing and decreasing flow periods, presence of “false alarm” at the beginning or at the end of the dry and the wet period, … This part is developed using water level data from the national hydrological services of Peru and Brazil and from the Environmental Research Observatory SOHYBAM (Geodynamical, hydrological and biogeochemical control of erosion/alteration and material transport in the Amazon basin). Finally, as a shorter than usual length of the low flow season, a rapid increase of the water level, a “false” beginning of the low water season, etc. are hazards that may put at risk sowing and plant development, hydrological parameters are related to yield values seeking possible correlations between extreme events and food security in the region.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of dairy supply chains in developing countries often shows a large diversity of organization usually based on smallholder farmers' involvement. This paper investigates how a dual supply chain combining both formal and informal markets with predominantly smallholder farmers impacts farmer–processor interactions at technical and organizational level in a Peruvian Andean valley. The analysis is based on three complementary field studies conducted between 2009 and 2012. Results show a large diversity of supply channels in formal and informal chains. Milk flows are observed between formal and informal processors based on a mix of competition and complementarity depending on the season of the year and the level of consumer demand. Smallholder farmers can change processors frequently according to the milk price and services offered, since no contracts link stakeholders. This organization allows smallholder farmers to be involved in the dairy sector but with low profitability. While the informal sector shows better profits per liter of milk than the formal ones, it remains sensitive to the State's willingness to apply stricter quality regulations.

Abstract

While Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, the abundance of trees is skewed strongly towards relatively few ‘hyperdominant' species. In addition to their diversity, Amazonian trees are a key component of the global carbon cycle, assimilating and storing more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth. Here we ask, using a unique data set of 530 forest plots, if the functions of storing and producing woody carbon are concentrated in a small number of tree species, whether the most abundant species also dominate carbon cycling, and whether dominant species are characterized by specific functional traits. We find that dominance of forest function is even more concentrated in a few species than is dominance of tree abundance, with only ≈1% of Amazon tree species responsible for 50% of carbon storage and productivity. Although those species that contribute most to biomass and productivity are often abundant, species maximum size is also influential, while the identity and ranking of dominant species varies by function and by region., The Amazon rainforest is dominated by relatively few tree species, yet the degree to which this hyperdominance influences carbon cycling remains unknown. Here, the authors analyse 530 forest plots and show that ∼1% of species are responsible for 50% of the aboveground carbon storage and productivity.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we explore a speleothem δ18O record from Palestina Cave, North Eastern Peru, at a site on the eastern side of the Andes cordillera, upper Amazon Basin, interpreted as a proxy for South America Summer Monsoon (SASM) intensity. This record allows reconstructing SASM activity with 5 yr time resolution over the last 1600 yr, spanning two major periods of climate variability: the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA; 900-1200 AD) and Little Ice Age (LIA 1400-1850 AD) recognized as periods of decrease and increase SASM activity respectively. Time series and wavelet analyses reveal decadal to multidecadal frequencies. Our results suggest that Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation mode (AMO) plays an important role for SASM modulation on multidecadal scale (~65 yr), especially over dry periods such as observed during MCA. Frequencies of 8 and 25 yr simultaneously with multidecadal signal (65 yr) are found over the LIA. and suggest that those modes could be related to North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation mode (IPO). Comparison with other South American Paleoprecipitation records shows that the Atlantic and Pacific decadal to multidecadal variability and their teleconnections play an important role in the intensity and the regional patterns of rainfall distribution during the last 1600 yr.

Abstract

In this work, the authors analyze the origin of the extreme floods in the Peruvian Amazonas River during the 1970–2012 period, focusing on the recent April 2012 flooding (55 400 m3 s−1). Several hydrological variables, such as rainfall, terrestrial water storage, and discharge, point out that the unprecedented 2012 flood is mainly related to an early and abundant wet season over the north of the basin. Thus, the peak of the Marañón River, the northern contributor of the Amazonas, occurred sooner than usual (in April instead of May), coinciding with the peak of the Ucayali River, the southern contributor. This concomitance caused a dramatic flood downstream in the Peruvian Amazonas. These results are compared to the amplitude and timing of the three most severe extreme floods (1970–2011). The analysis of the climatic features related to the most important floods (1986, 1993, 1999, and 2012) suggests that they are characterized by a La Niña event, which originates a geopotential height wave train near the ground, with positive anomalies over the subtropical South and North Pacific and Atlantic and over southeastern South America. These patterns contribute to 1) the origin of an abundant humidity transport flux from the tropical North Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea toward the northwestern Amazon and 2) the maintenance of the monsoon flux over this region. They both favor a strong convergence of humidity in the northern Amazonas basin. Finally, the authors suggest that the intensity of floods is more likely related to an early La Niña event (as observed during the 2011/12 season), early rainfall, and simultaneous peaks of both tributaries of the Amazonas River.

Abstract

International audience Because of climate change, much attention is drawn to the Amazon River basin, whose hydrology has already been strongly affected by extreme events during the past 20 years. Hydrological annual extreme variations (i.e. low/high flows) associated with precipitation (and evapotranspiration) changes are investigated over the Amazon River sub-basins using the land surface model ORCHIDEE and a multimodel approach. Climate change scenarios from up to eight AR4 Global Climate Models based on three emission scenarios were used to build future hydrological projections in the region, for two periods of the 21st century. For the middle of the century under the SRESA1B scenario, no change is found in high flow on the main stem of the Amazon River (Óbidos station), but a systematic discharge decrease is simulated during the recession period, leading to a 10% low-flow decrease. Contrasting discharge variations are pointed out depending on the location in the basin. In the western upper part of the basin, which undergoes an annual persistent increase in precipitation, high flow shows a 7% relative increase for the middle of the 21st century and the signal is enhanced for the end of the century (12%). By contrast, simulated precipitation decreases during the dry seasons over the southern, eastern and northern parts of the basin lead to significant low-flow decrease at several stations, especially in the Xingu River, where it reaches -50%, associated with a 9% reduction in the runoff coefficient. A 18% high-flow decrease is also found in this river. In the north, the low-flow decrease becomes higher toward the east: a 55% significant decrease in the eastern Branco River is associated with a 13% reduction in the runoff coefficient. The estimation of the streamflow elasticity to precipitation indicates that southern sub-basins (except for the mountainous Beni River), that have low runoff coefficients, will become more responsive to precipitation change (with a 5 to near 35% increase in elasticity) than the western sub-basins, experiencing high runoff coefficient and no change in streamflow elasticity to precipitation. These projections raise important issues for populations living near the rivers whose activity is regulated by the present annual cycle of waters. The question of their adaptability has already arisen.

Abstract

International audience; In this work we document and analyze the hydrological annual cycles characterized by a rapid transition between low and high flows in the Amazonas River (Peruvian Amazon) and we show how these events, which may impact vulnerable riverside residents, are related to regional climate variability. Our analysis is based on comprehensive discharge, rainfall and average suspended sediment data sets. Particular attention is paid to the 2010-11 hydrological year, when an unprecedented abrupt transition from the extreme September 2010 drought (8300 m3 s-1) to one of the four highest discharges in April 2011 (49 500 m3 s-1) was recorded at Tamshiyacu (Amazonas River). This unusual transition is also observed in average suspended sediments. Years with a rapid increase in discharge are characterized by negative sea surface temperature anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific during austral summer, corresponding to a La Niña-like mode. It originates a geopotential height wave train over the subtropical South Pacific and southeastern South America, with a negative anomaly along the southern Amazon and the southeastern South Atlantic convergence zone region. As a consequence, the monsoon flux is retained over the Amazon and a strong convergence of humidity occurs in the Peruvian Amazon basin, favoring high rainfall and discharge. These features are also reported during the 2010-11 austral summer, when an intense La Niña event characterized the equatorial Pacific.

Abstract

The discharge variability of the main rivers that drain the Guyana Shield is analysed over the last 50 years using cross-wavelet, coherence and composite analysis involving oceanic and atmospheric variables. We highlight the overall hydro-climatological homogeneity of this region that allowed us to focus on the longest discharge time series available. Therefore, a wavelet cross-analysis was carried out between monthly and seasonal Maroni River discharge at the Langa Tabiki station and selected climate indices. This confirms a strong relationship between the hydrology of the Guyana Shield and the Pacific sea-surface temperature (SST) fluctuations. There is evidence of intermittent influence, of between inter-annual and near decadal scales, of the Atlantic SST fluctuations, in particular around 1970 and 1990. Finally, we show that the links between oceanic regions and high discharge in the rivers of Guyana are realized through the reinforcement of the Walker and Hadley cells between the Amazon and the adjacent oceans and through decreased trade winds and monsoon flux that favour the persistence of humidity over the Guyana Shield. Nous analysons la variabilité des principaux fleuves qui drainent le bouclier guyanais au cours des cinquante dernières années en utilisant les analyses en ondelettes croisées, la cohérence en ondelettes et l_analyse composite en prenant en compte des forçages océaniques et atmosphériques. Nous avons tout d_abord mis en évidence une homogénéité hydro-climatologique globale dans cette région qui nous a permis de nous concentrer sur les séries hydrologiques disponibles les plus longues. Ainsi, une analyse en ondelettes croisées a été réalisée entre les débits mensuels et saisonniers du fleuve Maroni à la station de Langa Tabiki et différents indices climatiques. Elle a confirmé une relation forte entre l_hydrologie du plateau guyanais et les variations des températures de surface du Pacifique. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence une influence intermittente des températures de surface de l_Océan Atlantique à des échelles interannuelles et décennales, en particulier autour des années 1970 et 1990. Enfin, nous avons montré que les liens entre les influences des différentes régions océaniques et les débits maximaux relevés dans les fleuves guyanais sont influencés d_une part par le renforcement des cellules de Walker et Hadley entre l_Amazone et les océans adjacents, et d_autre part par une diminution des vents et des flux issus de l_effet de mousson qui favorisent la persistance d_humidité au dessus du bouclier guyanais.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of the ORCHIDEE land surface model to simulate streamflows over each sub-basin of the Amazon River basin. For this purpose, simulations are performed with a routing module including the influence of floodplains and swamps on river discharge and validated against on-site hydrological measurements collected within the HYBAM observatory over the 1980–2000 period. When forced by the NCC global meteorological dataset, the initial version of ORCHIDEE shows discrepancies with ORE HYBAM measurements with underestimation by 15% of the annual mean streamflow at Óbidos hydrological station. Consequently, several improvements are incrementally added to the initial simulation in order to reduce those discrepancies. First, values of NCC precipitation are substituted by ORE HYBAM daily in-situ rainfall observations from the meteorological services of Amazonian countries, interpolated over the basin. It highly improves the simulated streamflow over the northern and western parts of the basin, whereas streamflow over southern regions becomes overestimated, probably due to the extension of rainy spots that may be exaggerated by our interpolation method, or to an underestimation of simulated evapotranspiration when compared to flux tower measurements. Second, the initial map of maximal fractions of floodplains and swamps which largely underestimates floodplains areas over the main stem of the Amazon River and over the region of Llanos de Moxos in Bolivia, is substituted by a new one with a better agreement with different estimates over the basin. Simulated monthly water height is consequently better represented in ORCHIDEE when compared to Topex/Poseidon measurements over the main stem of the Amazon. Finally, a calibration of the time constant of the floodplain reservoir is performed to adjust the mean simulated seasonal peak flow at Óbidos in agreement with the observations.

Abstract

Summary Former hydrological studies in the Amazon Basin generally describe annual discharge variability on the main stem. However, the downstream Amazon River only represents the mean state of the Amazonian hydrological system. This study therefore uses a new data set including daily discharge in 18 sub-basins to analyze the variability of regional extremes in the Amazon basin, after recalling the diversity of the hydrological annual cycles within the Amazon basin. Several statistical tests are applied in order to detect trends and breaks in the time series. We show that during the 1974–2004 period, the stability of the mean discharge on the main stem in Obidos is explained by opposite regional features that principally involve Andean rivers: a decrease in the low stage runoff, particularly important in the southern regions, and an increase in the high stage runoff in the northwestern region. Both features are observed from the beginning of the nineties. These features are also observed in smaller meridian sub-basins in Peru and Bolivia. Moreover we show that the changes in discharge extremes are related to the regional pluriannual rainfall variability and the associated atmospheric circulation as well as to tropical large-scale climatic indicators.

Abstract

To a certain degree, Eastern Boundary Current (EBC) ecosystems are similar: Cold bottom water from moderate depths, rich in nutrients, is transported to the euphotic zone by a combination of trade winds, Coriolis force and Ekman transport. The resultant high primary production fuels a rich secondary production in the upper pelagic and nearshore zones, but where O2 exchange is restricted, it creates oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) at shelf and upper slope (Humboldt and Benguela Current) or slope depths (California Current). These hypoxic zones host a specifically adapted, small macro- and meiofauna together with giant sulphur bacteria that use nitrate to oxydise H2S. In all EBC, small polychaetes, large nematodes and other opportunistic benthic species have adapted to the hypoxic conditions and co-exist with sulphur bacteria, which seem to be particularly dominant off Peru and Chile. However, a massive reduction of macrobenthos occurs in the core of the OMZ. In the Humboldt Current area the OMZ ranges between The properties described are valid for very cold and cold (La Niña and "normal") ENSO conditions with effective upwelling of nutrient-rich bottom water. During warm (El Niño) episodes, warm water masses of low oxygen concentration from oceanic and equatorial regions enter the upwelling zones, bringing a variety of (sub)tropical immigrants. The autochthonous benthic fauna emigrates to deeper water or poleward, or suffers mortality. However, some local macrofaunal species experience important population proliferations, presumably due to improved oxygenation (in the southern hemisphere), higher temperature tolerance, reduced competition or the capability to use different food. Both these negative and positive effects of El Niño influence local artisanal fisheries and the livelihood of coastal populations. In the Humboldt Current system the hypoxic seafloor at outer shelf depths receives important flushing from the equatorial zone, causing havoc on the sulphur bacteria mats and immediate recolonisation of the sediments by mega- and macrofauna. Conversely, off California, the intruding equatorial water masses appear to have lower oxygen than ambient waters, and may cause oxygen deficiency at upper slope depths. Effects of this change have not been studied in detail, although shrimp and other taxa appear to alter their distribution on the continental margin. Other properties and reactions of the two Pacific EBC benthic ecosystems to El Niño seem to differ, too, as does the overall impact of major episodes (e.g., 1982/1983(1984) vs. 1997/1998). The relation of the "Benguela Niño" to ENSO seems unclear although many Pacific-Atlantic ocean and atmosphere teleconnections have been described. Warm, low-oxygen equatorial water seems to be transported into the upwelling area by similar mechanisms as in the Pacific, but most major impacts on the eukaryotic biota obviously come from other, independent perturbations such as an extreme eutrophication of the sediments ensuing in sulphidic eruptions and toxic algal blooms. Similarities and differences of the Humboldt and California Current benthic ecosystems are discussed with particular reference to ENSO impacts since 1972/73. Where there are data available, the authors include the Benguela Current ecosystem as another important, non-Pacific EBC, which also suffers from the effects of hypoxia.
