Abstract: The Anderson transition in random graphs has raised great interest, partly because of its analogy with the many-body localization (MBL) transition. Unlike the latter, many results for random graphs are now well established, in particular the existence and precise value of a critical disorder separating a localized from an ergodic delocalized phase. However, the renormalization group flow and the nature of the transition are not well understood. In turn, recent works on the MBL transition have made the remarkable prediction that the flow is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Here we show that the Anderson transition on graphs displays the same type of flow. Our work attests to the importance of rare branches along which wave functions have a much larger localization length $\xi_\parallel$ than the one in the transverse direction, $\xi_\perp$. Importantly, these two lengths have different critical behaviors: $\xi_\parallel$ diverges with a critical exponent $\nu_\parallel=1$, while $\xi_\perp$ reaches a finite universal value ${\xi_\perp^c}$ at the transition point $W_c$. Indeed, $\xi_\perp^{-1} \approx {\xi_\perp^c}^{-1} + \xi^{-1}$, with $\xi \sim (W-W_c)^{-\nu_\perp}$ associated with a new critical exponent $\nu_\perp = 1/2$, where $\exp( \xi)$ controls finite-size effects. The delocalized phase inherits the strongly non-ergodic properties of the critical regime at short scales, but is ergodic at large scales, with a unique critical exponent $\nu=1/2$. This shows a very strong analogy with the MBL transition: the behavior of $\xi_\perp$ is identical to that recently predicted for the typical localization length of MBL in a phenomenological renormalization group flow. We demonstrate these important properties for a smallworld complex network model and show the universality of our results by considering different network parameters and different key observables of Anderson localization., Comment: 36 pages, 32 figures. Abstract: This work is focused on the recycling of natural rubber industry waste by means of thermo-mechanical devulcanization. With that aim, tests were carried out in an industrial twin-screw extruder, at different barrel temperatures, ranging from 80 to 220 °C. The extrusion was done with a screw profile specifically designed for the devulcanization process. The extent and quality of devulcanization were evaluated through the measurements of crosslink density, soluble fraction and Mooney viscosity, and by using the Horikx diagram. Results showed that a high degree of reclaiming (˜90%) was obtained, independently of the barrel temperature. The samples with the best devulcanization quality, i.e. the samples with a more selective sulfur bond scission, were found to be those treated at a lower input temperature. This was explained by the effect of the rubber homogenous self-heating which contributes to the local increase of the material temperature, during the devulcanization process. Moreover, it was found that the properties of the devulcanized rubber/virgin rubber blends were not significantly affected by the addition of the treated rubber. Results suggest that the entire natural rubber industry waste could be recycled into new competitive products, with low energy consumption. This would present a real contribution to the industrial recycling and thus a noticeable improvement of the environment.

Abstract: Quantum multifractality is a fundamental property of systems such as non-interacting disordered systems at an Anderson transition and many-body systems in Hilbert space. Here we discuss the origin of the presence or absence of a fundamental symmetry related to this property. The anomalous multifractal dimension $\Delta_q$ is used to characterize the structure of quantum states in such systems. Although the multifractal symmetry relation \mbox{$\Delta_q=\Delta_{1-q}$} is universally fulfilled in many known systems, recently some important examples have emerged where it does not hold. We show that this is the result of two different mechanisms. The first one was already known and is related to Gaussian fluctuations well described by random matrix theory. The second one, not previously explored, is related to the presence of an algebraically localized envelope. While the effect of Gaussian fluctuations can be removed by coarse graining, the second mechanism is robust to such a procedure. We illustrate the violation of the symmetry due to algebraic localization on two systems of very different nature, a 1D Floquet critical system and a model corresponding to Anderson localization on random graphs., Comment: Closest to published version

Abstract: International audience; Elephant seals, Mirounga spp., are highly dimorphic, having different energetic requirements according to age and sex, and foraging in various ecological and oceanographic contexts. Resource partitioning has been shown for the sub‐Antarctic populations of southern elephant seals, M. leonina, where colonies are surrounded by narrow shelves that deepen abruptly. In contrast, seals from Península Valdés (Argentina), in the northernmost extent of the breeding range, face an extended, shallow, temperate, and productive continental shelf. We integrated tracking data from 98 animals (juveniles and adults, males and females) gathered over more than two decades, and found that although all available habitats were used, individuals segregated by age and sex. Juvenile males favored shelf habitats, whereas subadult and adult males also used the shelf break. Juvenile females preferred the shelf and the more distant Argentine Basin used by postbreeding and postmolt adult females. Males showed the highest proportion of area‐restricted search locations, suggesting more spatially concentrated feeding activity, and likely reflecting a preference for foraging habitat and prey. Our results are consistent with those from other populations, implying that elephant seals show remarkable similarities in habitat use by age and sex classes, despite broad differences in the offshore habitats between sub‐Antarctic and temperate ecosystems.

Abstract: Eutrophication is a widespread environmental change that usually reduces the stabilizing effect of plant diversity on productivity in local communities. Whether this effect is scale dependent remains to be elucidated. Here, we determine the relationship between plant diversity and temporal stability of productivity for 243 plant communities from 42 grasslands across the globe and quantify the effect of chronic fertilization on these relationships. Unfertilized local communities with more plant species exhibit greater asynchronous dynamics among species in response to natural environmental fluctuations, resulting in greater local stability (alpha stability). Moreover, neighborhood communities that have greater spatial variation in plant species composition within sites (higher beta diversity) have greater spatial asynchrony of productivity among communities, resulting in greater stability at the larger scale (gamma stability). Importantly, fertilization consistently weakens the contribution of plant diversity to both of these stabilizing mechanisms, thus diminishing the positive effect of biodiversity on stability at differing spatial scales. Our findings suggest that preserving grassland functional stability requires conservation of plant diversity within and among ecological communities., Eutrophication has been shown to weaken diversity-stability relationships in grasslands, but it is unclear whether the effect depends on scale. Analysing a globally distributed network of grassland sites, the authors show a positive role of beta diversity and spatial asynchrony as drivers of stability but find that nitrogen enrichment weakens the diversity-stability relationships at different spatial scales.

Abstract: The module category of any artin algebra is filtered by the powers of its radical, thus defining an associated graded category. As an extension of the degree of irreducible morphisms, this text introduces the degree of morphisms in the module category in terms of the induced natural transformations between representable functors on this graded category. When the ground ring is a perfect field, and the given morphism behaves nicely with respect to covering theory (as do irreducible morphisms with indecomposable domain or indecomposable codomain), it is shown that the degree of the morphism is finite if and only if its associated natural transformation has a representable kernel. As a corollary, generalisations of known results on the degrees of irreducible morphisms over perfect fields are given. Abstract: We consider a massive particle driven with a constant force in a periodic potential and subjected to a dissipative friction. As a function of the drive and damping, the phase diagram of this paradigmatic model is well known to present a pinned, a sliding, and a bistable regime separated by three distinct bifurcation lines. In physical terms, the average velocity $v$ of the particle is nonzero only if either (i) the driving force is large enough to remove any stable point, forcing the particle to slide, or (ii) there are local minima but the damping is small enough, below a critical damping, for the inertia to allow the particle to cross barriers and follow a limit cycle; this regime is bistable and whether $v > 0$ or $v = 0$ depends on the initial state. In this paper, we focus on the asymptotes of the critical line separating the bistable and the pinned regimes. First, we study its behavior near the "triple point" where the pinned, the bistable, and the sliding dynamical regimes meet. Just below the critical damping we uncover a critical regime, where the line approaches the triple point following a power-law behavior. We show that its exponent is controlled by the normal form of the tilted potential close to its critical force. Second, in the opposite regime of very low damping, we revisit existing results by providing a simple method to determine analytically the exact behavior of the line in the case of a generic potential. The analytical estimates, accurately confirmed numerically, are obtained by exploiting exact soliton solutions describing the orbit in a modified tilted potential which can be mapped to the original tilted washboard potential. Abstract: We study the eigenstates of open maps whose classical dynamics is pseudointegrable and for which the corresponding closed quantum system has multifractal properties. Adapting the existing general framework developed for open chaotic quantum maps, we specify the relationship between the eigenstates and the classical structures, and quantify their multifractality at different scales. Based on this study, we conjecture that quantum states in such systems are distributed according to a hierarchy of classical structures, but are multifractal instead of ergodic at each level of the hierarchy. This is visible for sufficiently long-lived resonance states at scales smaller than the classical structures. Abstract: We present a full description of the nonergodic properties of wavefunctions on random graphs without boundary in the localized and critical regimes of the Anderson transition. We find that they are characterized by two critical localization lengths: the largest one describes localization along rare branches and diverges with a critical exponent $\nu_\parallel=1$ at the transition. The second length, which describes localization along typical branches, reaches at the transition a finite universal value (which depends only on the connectivity of the graph), with a singularity controlled by a new critical exponent $\nu_\perp=1/2$. We show numerically that these two localization lengths control the finite-size scaling properties of key observables: wavefunction moments, correlation functions and spectral statistics. Our results are identical to the theoretical predictions for the typical localization length in the many-body localization transition, with the same critical exponent. Abstract: The use of hybrid materials, where a matrix sustains nanoparticles controlling the release of the chemotherapeutic drug, could be beneficial for the treatment of primary tumors prior or after surgery. This localized chemotherapy would guarantee high drug concentrations at the tumor site while precluding systemic drug exposure minimizing undesirable side effects. We combined bacterial cellulose hydrogel (BC) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) including doxorubicin (Dox) as a drug model. NLCs loaded with cationic Dox (NLCs-H) or neutral Dox (NLCs-N) were fully characterized and their cell internalization and cytotoxic efficacy were evaluated in vitro against MDA-MB-231 cells. Thereafter, a fixed combination of NLCs-H and NLCs-N loaded into BC (BC-NLCs-NH) was assayed in vivo into an orthotopic breast cancer mouse model. NLCs-H showed low encapsulation efficiency (48%) and fast release of the drug while NLCs-N showed higher encapsulation (97%) and sustained drug release. Both NLCs internalized via endocytic pathway, while allowing a sustained release of the Dox, which in turn rendered IC50 values below of those of free Dox. Taking advantage of the differential drug release, a mixture of NLCs-N and NLCs-H was encapsulated into BC matrix (BC-NLCs-NH) and assayed in vivo, showing a significant reduction of tumor growth, metastasis incidence and local drug toxicities., Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Fermentaciones Industriales, Centro de Química Inorgánica

Abstract: Vitrimers are a new class of polymeric materials with very attractive properties since they can be reworked to any shape while being at the same time permanently cross-linked. Inspired by the principle of vinylogy, we explored transamination of vinylogous urethanes as exchange reaction for vitrimers. First, a kinetic study on model compounds revealed the occurrence of transamination of vinylogous urethanes in a good temperature window without side reactions. Next, poly(vinylogous urethane) networks with a storage modulus of ~2.4 GPa and a glass transition temperature above 80°C were prepared by bulk polymerization of cyclohexane dimethanol bisacetoacetate, m-xylylene diamine and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine. The vitrimer nature of these networks was examined by solubility, stress-relaxation and creep experiments. Relaxation times as short as 85 s at 170°C were observed without using any catalyst. In addition, the networks were recyclable up to four times by consecutive grinding/compression molding cycles without significant mechanical or chemical degradation. Fil: Denissen, Wim. Abstract: Police crash reports are often the main source for official data in many countries. However, with the exception of fatal crashes, crashes are often underreported in a biased manner. Consequently, the countermeasures adopted according to them may be inefficient. In the case of bicycle crashes, this bias is most acute and it probably varies across countries, with some of them being more prone to reporting accidents to police than others. Assessing if this bias occurs and the size of it can be of great importance for evaluating the risks associated with bicycling.This study utilized data collected in the COST TU1101 action "Towards safer bicycling through optimization of bicycle helmets and usage". The data came from an online survey that included questions related to bicyclists´ attitudes, behaviour, cycling habits, accidents, and patterns of use of helmets. The survey was filled by 8655 bicyclists from 30 different countries. After applying various exclusion factors, 7015 questionnaires filled by adult cyclists from 17 countries, each with at least 100 valid responses, remained in our sample.The results showed that across all countries, an average of only 10% of all crashes were reported to the police, with a wide range among countries: from a minimum of 0.0% (Israel) and 2.6% (Croatia) to a maximum of a 35.0% (Germany). Some factors associated with the reporting levels were type of crash, type of vehicle involved, and injury severity. No relation was found between the likelihood of reporting and the cyclist´s gender, age, educational level, marital status, being a parent, use of helmet, and type of bicycle.The significant under-reporting - including injury crashes that do not lead to hospitalization - justifies the use of self-report survey data for assessment of bicycling crash patterns as they relate to (1) crash risk issues such as location, infrastructure, cyclists´ characteristics, and use of helmet and (2) strategic approaches to bicycle crash prevention and injury reduction. Abstract: Reproductive timing in many taxa plays a key role in determining breeding productivity , and is often sensitive to climatic conditions . Current climate change may alter the timing of breeding at different rates across trophic levels, potentially resulting in temporal mismatch between the resource requirements of predators and their prey . This is of particular concern for highertrophic-level organisms, whose longer generation times confer a lower rate of evolutionary rescue than primary producers or consumers. However, the disconnection between studies of ecological change in marine systems makes it difficult to detect general changes in the timing of reproduction5 . Here, we use a comprehensive meta-analysis of 209 phenological time series from 145 breeding populations to show that, on average, seabird populations worldwide have not adjusted their breeding seasons over time (−0.020 days yr−1 ) or in response to sea surface temperature (SST) (−0.272 days °C−1 ) between 1952 and 2015. However, marked between-year variation in timing observed in resident species and some Pelecaniformes and Suliformes (cormorants, gannets and boobies) may imply that timing, in some cases, is affected by unmeasured environmental conditions. Abstract: The exponential increase of genomes’ sequencing has revealed the presence of NO-Synthases (NOS) throughout the tree of life, uncovering an extraordinary diversity of genetic structure and biological functions. Although NO has been shown to be a crucial mediator in plant physiology, NOS sequences seem present solely in green algae genomes, with a first identification in the picoplankton species Ostreococcus tauri. There is no rationale so far to account for the presence of NOS in this early-diverging branch of the green lineage and its absence in land plants. To address the biological function of algae NOS, we cloned, expressed and characterized the NOS oxygenase domain from Ostreococcus tauri (OtNOSoxy). We launched a phylogenetic and structural analysis of algae NOS, and achieved a 3D model of OtNOSoxy by homology modeling. We used a combination of various spectroscopies to characterize the structural and electronic fingerprints of some OtNOSoxy reaction intermediates. The analysis of OtNOSoxy catalytic activity and kinetic efficiency was achieved by stoichiometric stopped-flow. Our results highlight the conserved and particular features of OtNOSoxy structure that might explain its ultrafast NO-producing capacity. This integrative Structure-Catalysis-Function approach could be extended to the whole NOS superfamily and used for predicting potential biological activity for any new NOS. Abstract: The diagonal entropy was introduced as a good entropy candidate especially for isolated quantum systems out of equilibrium. Here we present an analytical calculation of the average diagonal entropy for systems undergoing unitary evolution and an external perturbation in the form of a cyclic quench. We compare our analytical findings with numerical simulations of various many-body quantum systems. Abstract: International audience; Nitric oxide (NO) functions as a signaling molecule in many biological processes in species belonging to all kingdoms of life. In animal cells, NO is synthesized primarily by NO synthase (NOS), an enzyme that catalyze the NADPH-dependent oxidation of L-arginine to NO and L-citrulline. Three NOS isoforms have been identified, the constitutive neuronal NOS (nNOS) and endothelial NOS (eNOS) and one inducible (iNOS). Plant NO synthesis is complex and is a matter of ongoing investigation and debate. Despite evidence of an Arg-dependent pathway for NO synthesis in plants, no plant NOS homologs to animal forms have been identified to date. In plants, there is also evidence for a nitrate-dependent mechanism of NO synthesis, catalyzed by cytosolic nitrate reductase. The existence of a NOS enzyme in the plant kingdom, from the tiny single-celled green alga Ostreococcus tauri was reported in 2010. O. tauri shares a common ancestor with higher plants and is considered to be part of an early diverging class within the green plant lineage.In this chapter we describe detailed protocols to study the expression and characterization of the enzymatic activity of NOS from O. tauri. The most used methods for the characterization of a canonical NOS are the analysis of spectral properties of the oxyferrous complex in the heme domain, the oxyhemoglobin (oxyHb) and citrulline assays and the NADPH oxidation for in vitro analysis of its activity or the use of fluorescent probes and Griess assay for in vivo NO determination. We further discuss the advantages and drawbacks of each method. Finally, we remark factors associated to the measurement of NOS activity in photosynthetic organisms that can generate misunderstandings in the interpretation of results.

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) signaling regulates various physiological processes in both animals and plants. In animals, NO synthesis is mainly catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS) enzymes. Although NOS-like activities that are sensitive to mammalian NOS inhibitors have been detected in plant extracts, few bona fide plant NOS enzymes have been identified. We searched the data set produced by the 1000 Plants (1KP) international consortium for the presence of transcripts encoding NOS-like proteins in over 1000 species of land plants and algae. We also searched for genes encoding NOS-like enzymes in 24 publicly available algal genomes. We identified no typical NOS sequences in 1087 sequenced transcriptomes of land plants. In contrast, we identified NOS-like sequences in 15 of the 265 algal species analyzed. Even if the presence of NOS enzymes assembled from multipolypeptides in plants cannot be conclusively discarded, the emerging data suggest that, instead of generating NO with evolutionarily conserved NOS enzymes, land plants have evolved finely regulated nitrate assimilation and reduction processes to synthesize NO through a mechanism different than that in animals. Abstract: International audience; Astrocytes constitute active networks of intercommunicating cells that support the metabolism and the development of neurons and affect synaptic functions via multiple pathways. ATP is one of the major neurotransmitters mediating signaling between neurons and astrocytes. Potentially acting through both purinergic metabotropic P2Y receptors (P2YRs) and ionotropic P2X receptors (P2XRs), up until now ATP has only been shown to activate P2YRs in Bergmann cells, the radial glia of the cerebellar cortex that envelopes Purkinje cell afferent synapses. In this study, using multiple experimental approaches in acute cerebellar slices we demonstrate the existence of functional P2XRs on Bergmann cells. In particular, we show here that Bergmann cells express uniquely P2X7R subtypes: (i) immunohistochemical analysis revealed the presence of P2X7Rs on Bergmann cell processes, (ii) in whole cell recordings P2XR pharmacological agonists induced depolarizing currents that were blocked by specific antagonists of P2X7Rs, and could not be elicited in slices from P2X₇R-deficient mice and finally, (iii) calcium imaging experiments revealed two distinct calcium signals triggered by application of exogenous ATP: a transient signal deriving from release of calcium from intracellular stores, and a persistent one following activation of P2X7Rs. Our data thus reveal a new pathway by which extracellular ATP may affect glial cell function, thus broadening our knowledge on purinergic signaling in the cerebellum.

Abstract: Seabirds are amongst the most globally-threatened of all groups of birds, and conservation issues specific to albatrosses (Diomedeidae) and large petrels (Procellaria spp. and giant petrels Macronectes spp.) led to drafting of the multi-lateral Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP). Here we review the taxonomy, breeding and foraging distributions, population status and trends, threats and priorities for the 29 species covered by ACAP. Nineteen (66%) are listed as threatened by IUCN, and 11 (38%) are declining. Most have extensive at-sea distributions, and the greatest threat is incidental mortality (bycatch) in industrial pelagic or demersal longline, trawl or artisanal fisheries, often in both national and international waters. Mitigation measures are available that reduce bycatch in most types of fisheries, but some management bodies are yet to make these mandatory, levels of implementation and monitoring of compliance are often inadequate, and there are insufficient observer programmes collecting robust data on bycatch rates. Intentional take, pollution (including plastic ingestion), and threats at colonies affect fewer species than bycatch; however, the impacts of disease (mainly avian cholera) and of predation by introduced species, including feral cats (Felis catus), rats (Rattus spp.) and house mice (Mus musculus), are severe for some breeding populations. Although major progress has been made in recent years in reducing bycatch rates and in controlling or eradicating pests at breeding sites, unless conservation efforts are intensified, the future prospects of many species of albatrosses and large petrels will remain bleak. Global efforts to model regional climate modes are in the process of being validated against, and integrated with, records of past vegetation change. For South America, however, the full potential of vegetation records for evaluating and improving climate models has hitherto not been sufficiently acknowledged due to an absence of information on the spatial and temporal coverage of study sites. This paper therefore serves as a guide to high-quality pollen records that capture environmental variability during the last 2 millennia. We identify 60 vegetation (pollen) records from across South America which satisfy geochronological requirements set out for climate modelling, and we discuss their sensitivity to the spatial signature of climate modes throughout the continent. Diverse patterns of vegetation response to climate change are observed, with more similar patterns of change in the lowlands and varying intensity and direction of responses in the highlands. Pollen records display local-scale responses to climate modes; thus, it is necessary to understand how vegetation-climate interactions might diverge under variable settings. We provide a qualitative translation from pollen metrics to climate variables. Additionally, pollen is an excellent indicator of human impact through time. We discuss evidence for human land use in pollen records and provide an overview considered useful for archaeological hypothesis testing and important in distinguishing natural from anthropogenically driven vegetation change. We stress the need for the palynological community to be more familiar with climate variability patterns to correctly attribute the potential causes of observed vegetation dynamics. Abstract: The sedentarism and wide global distribution of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis have made it a useful bioindicator to assess changes in the health status of the marine ecosystem in response to pollution and other environmental stresses. Effective biomonitoring of an ecosystem requires, however, that multiple biomarkers be used to obtain an accurate measure of the cumulative effects of different sources of environmental stress. Here, we provide a first integrated review of the biological, economical, and geographical characteristics of another species of mussels, the ribbed mussel Aulacomya ater. We discuss the use of Aulacomya ater as a complementary biomonitor to the blue mussel to assess the impact of pollutants and climate change. Recent findings have indeed shown that Mytilus edulis and Aulacomya ater have distinctive anatomy and physiology and respond differently to environmental stress. Monitoring of mixed beds containing blue and ribbed mussels may thus represent a unique opportunity to study the effect of environmental stress on the biodiversity of marine ecosystems, most notably in the Southern hemisphere, which is particularly sensitive to climate change and where both species often cohabitate in the same intertidal zones. Abstract: We present a comprehensive study of the destruction of quantum multifractality in the presence of perturbations. We study diverse representative models displaying multifractality, including a pseudointegrable system, the Anderson model and a random matrix model. We apply several types of natural perturbations which can be relevant for experimental implementations. We construct an analytical theory for certain cases, and perform extensive large-scale numerical simulations in other cases. The data are analyzed through refined methods including double scaling analysis. Our results confirm the recent conjecture that multifractality breaks down following two scenarios. In the first one, multifractality is preserved unchanged below a certain characteristic length which decreases with perturbation strength. In the second one, multifractality is affected at all scales and disappears uniformly for a strong enough perturbation. Our refined analysis shows that subtle variants of these scenarios can be present in certain cases. Abstract: We expose two scenarios for the breakdown of quantum multifractality under the effect of perturbations. In the first scenario, multifractality survives below a certain scale of the quantum fluctuations. In the other one, the fluctuations of the wave functions are changed at every scale and each multifractal dimension smoothly goes to the ergodic value. We use as generic examples a one-dimensional dynamical system and the three-dimensional Anderson model at the metal-insulator transition. Based on our results, we conjecture that the sensitivity of quantum multifractality to perturbation is universal in the sense that it follows one of these two scenarios depending on the perturbation. Abstract: Cloud-point curves of blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a series of oligodiols based on a bisphenol A nucleus and short branches of poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(propylene oxide) (BPA-EO or BPA-PO), and with PEO and PPO oligomers, were obtained using a light transmission device. Experimental results were fitted with the Flory- Huggins model using an interaction parameter depending on both temperature and composition. For PMMA/PEO and PMMA/PPO blends, the miscibility increased when increasing the size of the diol, due to the significant decrease in the entropic and enthalpic terms contributing to the interaction parameter. This reflected the decrease in the selfassociation of solvent molecules and in the contribution of terminal OH groups to the mismatching of solubility parameters. For PMMA/BPA-EO blends, a decrease of the entropic contribution to the interaction parameter when increasing the size of the oligodiol was also found. However, the effect was counterbalanced by the opposite contribution of combinatorial terms leading to cloud-point curves located in approximately the same temperature range. For PMMA/BPA-PO blends, the interaction parameter exhibited a very low value. In this case, the effect of solvent size was much more important on combinatorial terms than on the interaction parameter, leading to an increase in miscibility when decreasing the oligodiol size. For short BPA-PO oligodiols no phase separation was observed. The entropic contribution of the interaction parameter exhibited an inverse relationship with the size of the oligodiols, independent of the nature of the chains bearing the hydroxyls and the type of OH groups (primary or secondary). Abstract: Nanostructured thermosets may be obtained by self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers in a reactive solvent and fixation of the morphologies by the cross-linking reaction. Nanostructuration requires the presence of a bock that remains miscible in the polymer during polymerization. The selection of the miscible block depends on the particular system and in some cases (e.g., for epoxy-amine network based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, and 4,4'- diaminodiphenylsulfone) it is very difficult to find such a block. In this manuscript it is shown that random copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) containing different molar fractions of DMA, can be used as a miscible block for the nanostructuration of epoxies. The miscibility of the random copolymer during formation of the epoxy network was first analyzed determining cloud-point conversions as a function of the molar fraction of DMA in the copolymer. A thermodynamic model of the phase separation was performed using the Flory-Huggins model and taking the polydispersities of both polymers into account. A single expression of the interaction parameter based on the theory of random copolymers provided a reasonable fitting of the experimental cloud-point curves. The significant increase in the miscibility produced by using small DMA molar fractions in the copolymer was explained by the high negative value of the binary interaction energy between DMA and the epoxy-amine solvent, associated to the positive value of the interaction energy between DMA and MMA units. Block copolymers with poly(n-butyl acrylate) as the immiscible block and the random copolymer P(MMA-co-DMA) as the miscible block were used for the nanostructuration of epoxy networks. Abstract: International audience; Thermosetting polymers (also called thermosets) are a family of plastics characterized by the fact that they are formed starting from a liquid solution that irreversibly leads to a solid material during a heating step. This chapter focuses on some aspects of the chemistry of epoxy polymers because it provides examples of both step-growth and chain-growth polymerizations employed in the synthesis of polymer networks. The chapter explains structural transformations such as gelation, vitrification, that take place during network formation. Then, it talks about rules for processing thermosetting polymers. Processing techniques for thermosetting polymers are described in what follows in relation to the most extended applications.

Abstract: We study a version of the mathematical Ruijsenaars-Schneider model, and reinterpret it physically in order to describe the spreading with time of quantum wave packets in a system where multifractality can be tuned by varying a parameter. We compare different methods to measure the multifractality of wave packets, and identify the best one. We find the multifractality to decrease with time until it reaches an asymptotic limit, different from the mulifractality of eigenvectors, but related to it, as is the rate of the decrease. Abstract: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Botrytis cinerea are closely related necrotrophic plant pathogenic fungi notable for their wide host ranges and environmental persistence. These attributes have made these species models for understanding the complexity of necrotrophic, broad host-range pathogenicity. Despite their similarities, the two species differ in mating behaviour and the ability to produce asexual spores. We have sequenced the genomes of one strain of S. sclerotiorum and two strains of B. cinerea. The comparative analysis of these genomes relative to one another and to other sequenced fungal genomes is provided here. Their 38–39 Mb genomes include 11,860–14,270 predicted genes, which share 83% amino acid identity on average between the two species. We have mapped the S. sclerotiorum assembly to 16 chromosomes and found large-scale co-linearity with the B. cinerea genomes. Seven percent of the S. sclerotiorum genome comprises transposable elements compared to, Author Summary Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Botrytis cinerea are notorious plant pathogenic fungi with very wide host ranges. They cause vast economic damage during crop cultivation as well as in harvested produce. These fungi are typical examples of necrotrophs: they first kill host plant cells and then colonize the dead tissue. The genome sequences of the two fungi were determined in order to examine commonalities in structure and content and in order to find unique features that may distinguish them from other pathogenic fungi and from saprotrophic fungi. The genomes show high sequence identity and a similar arrangement of genes. S. sclerotiorum and B. cinerea differ in their regulation of sexual reproduction, and the genetic basis and its evolution could be explained from the genome sequence. The genome sequence revealed a striking difference in the number and diversity of secondary metabolism gene clusters, which may be involved in the adaptation to different ecological niches. Altogether, there were no unique features in the genomes of S. sclerotiorum and B. cinerea that could be identified as “silver bullets,” which distinguish these aggressive pathogens from other pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi. These findings reinforce the quantitative, multigenic nature of necrotrophic pathogenesis.

Abstract: International audience; We investigated the concentrations of cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, lead and zinc among feather tissues in sexes of Black-browed Albatross killed in longliners off Argentina in 2005. We found no different metal concentration with sex for cadmium, copper, iron, lead and zinc in feathers of adult birds, though there were significant body-size differences between sexes. However, the concentrations of trace metals differed significantly among the type of feather within individual bird. The mean concentrations of copper, iron, and zinc in breast feathers of were lower than those reported for the species from Georgias del Sur/ South Georgia, the southern Indian Ocean and for other seabirds' worldwide. While cadmium fall within the known range of concentrations for bird feathers lead were not. Our results may be indicating that level of pollution in Patagonia may not be as negligible as previously thought at least for some trace metals.

Abstract: A sun eh-derived alpha-azide-omega-alkyne 1,4 3,6-dianhydrohexitol AB monomer and a novel symmetrical heterofunctional A(2)B(2) aliphatic cross-linker, i c 2,2-bis(azidomethyl)-1.3-bis(O-propargyl) propanediol, were copolymerized at various molar ratios to generate biosourced networks through thermal 1,3-dipolar Huisgen polyaddition The investigation of the cross-linking reactions through DSC analyses confirmed the highly exothermic character of the azide/alkyne cycloaddition (Delta H-(total) = 232 +/- 5 kJ/mol of functional groups of type A or B) and as predicted clearly underlined a one-to-one relationship between the glass transition temperature and the conversion Experimental values of conversion at the gel point estimated from DSC and rheological measurements deviated significantly from the ideal main-field theory of network formation On the basis of statistical calculations, this behavior was assigned to the occurrence of intramolecular cyclizations during the network formation Although a significant fraction of intramolecular cycles was generated during the curing process, the AB + A(2)B(2) thermal 1,3-dipolar Huisgen polyaddition strategy afforded relatively high glass transition temperature polytriazole networks (T-g >= 140 degrees C) using versatile processing conditions and in the absence of additives.

Abstract: A starch-derived α-azide-ω-alkyne 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitol AB monomer and a novel symmetrical heterofunctional A2B2 aliphatic cross-linker, i.e., 2,2-bis(azidomethyl)-1,3-bis(O-propargyl) propanediol, were copolymerized at various molar ratios to generate biosourced networks through thermal 1,3-dipolar Huisgen polyaddition. The investigation of the cross-linking reactions through DSC analyses confirmed the highly exothermic character of the azide/alkyne cycloaddition (ΔH(total) = 232 ± 5 kJ/mol of functional groups of type A or B) and as predicted clearly underlined a one-to-one relationship between the glass transition temperature and the conversion. Experimental values of conversion at the gel point estimated from DSC and rheological measurements deviated significantly from the ideal main-field theory of network formation. On the basis of statistical calculations, this behavior was assigned to the occurrence of intramolecular cyclizations during the network formation. Although a significant fraction of intramolecular cycles was generated during the curing process, the AB + A2B2 thermal 1,3-dipolar Huisgen polyaddition strategy afforded relatively high glass transition temperature polytriazole networks (Tg ≥ 140 °C) using versatile processing conditions and in the absence of additives. We apply this notion to the study of laura algebras and we use it to define a class of algebras with predictable Auslander–Reiten components.

Abstract: We study the degree of irreducible morphisms in any Auslander-Reiten component of a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. We give a characterization for an irreducible morphism to have finite left (or right) degree. This is used to prove our main theorem: An algebra is of finite representation type if and only if for every indecomposable projective the inclusion of the radical in the projective has finite right degree, which is equivalent to require that for every indecomposable injective the epimorphism from the injective to its quotient by its socle has finite left degree. We also apply the techniques that we develop: We study when the non-zero composite of a path of $n$ irreducible morphisms between indecomposable modules lies in the $n+1$-th power of the radical; and we study the same problem for sums of such paths when they are sectional, thus proving a generalisation of a pioneer result of Igusa and Todorov on the composite of a sectional path., 20 pages

Abstract: We study the thermally assisted relaxation of a directed elastic line in a two dimensional quenched random potential by solving numerically the Edwards-Wilkinson equation and the Monte Carlo dynamics of a solid-on-solid lattice model. We show that the aging dynamics is governed by a growing correlation length displaying two regimes: an initial thermally dominated power-law growth which crosses over, at a static temperature-dependent correlation length $L_T \sim T^3$, to a logarithmic growth consistent with an algebraic growth of barriers. We present a scaling arguments to deal with the crossover-induced geometrical and dynamical effects. This analysis allows to explain why the results of most numerical studies so far have been described with effective power-laws and also permits to determine the observed anomalous temperature-dependence of the characteristic growth exponents. We argue that a similar mechanism should be at work in other disordered systems. We generalize the Family-Vicsek stationary scaling law to describe the roughness by incorporating the waiting-time dependence or age of the initial configuration. The analysis of the two-time linear response and correlation functions shows that a well-defined effective temperature exists in the power-law regime. Abstract: Identifying the factors responsible for the structuring of genetic diversity is of fundamental importance for biodiversity conservation. However, arriving at such understanding is difficult owing to the many factors involved and the potential interactions between them. Here, we present an example of how such interactions can preclude us from arriving at a complete characterization of the demographic history and genetic structure of a species. Ctenomys rionegrensis is a species with restricted dispersal abilities and, as such, should exhibit an isolation by distance (IBD) pattern, which previous studies were unable to uncover. It was therefore concluded that this species underwent a recent population expansion. Using a novel hierarchical Bayesian method, we show that the inability to detect the IBD pattern is due to the interaction between elevation and geographical distance. We posit that populations in low areas suffer periodic floods that may reduce local population sizes, increasing genetic drift, a process that masks the effect of distance on genetic differentiation. Our results do not refute the possibility that the populations of C. rionegrensis underwent a recent population expansion but they indicate that an alternative scenario described by a metapopulation model at or near migration-drift equilibrium cannot be excluded either.

Abstract: The dynamics of supercooled liquid and glassy systems are usually studied within the Lagrangian representation, in which the positions and velocities of distinguishable interacting particles are followed. Within this representation, however, it is difficult to define measures of spatial heterogeneities in the dynamics, as particles move in and out of any one given region within long enough times. It is also nontransparent how to make connections between the structural glass and the spin glass problems within the Lagrangian formulation. We propose an Eulerian formulation of supercooled liquids and glasses that allows for a simple connection between particle and spin systems, and that permits the study of dynamical heterogeneities within a fixed frame of reference similar to the one used for spin glasses. Abstract: International audience; Several studies have recently reported the use of monofunctional octahedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (monofunctional POSS) to modify polymer networks. In most of these studies the final material is depicted as a network with pendent POSS units randomly dispersed in the structure. The aim of this paper is to show that this representation is generally not correct due to the occurrence of a polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) process. In this sense, monofunctional POSS are not different from different types of rubbers, thermoplastics, or liquid crystals used to modify polymer networks. Although some authors have noticed the occurrence of PIPS in particular systems, a comparative study of the effect of the chemical structure of POSS and its prereaction with one of the monomers on the morphologies generated has not been previously reported. Glycidyloxypropylheptaisobutyl POSS (iBu-GlyPOSS) and glycidyloxypropyl-heptaphenyl POSS (Ph-GlyPOSS) were used to modify an epoxy network based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-diethylaniline) (MDEA). POSS was introduced in the formulation either nonreacted or prereacted with MDEA (molar ratio POSS/MDEA: 1/10). While both nonreacted and prereacted iBu-GlyPOSS were soluble in the epoxy-amine precursors at the polymerization temperature (135 °C), only prereacted Ph-GlyPOSS could be dissolved in epoxy-amine precursors. For every case a polymerization-induced phase separation took place. For the nonreacted iBu-GlyPOSS this process led to a dispersion of spherical particles with sizes in the range of the micrometers that crystallized upon cooling. Both prereacted POSS led to different types of amorphous biphasic structures. Therefore, the nature of the organic inert group and the prereaction of a monofunctional POSS can be used to control the morphologies generated in the POSS-modified polymer network.

Abstract: Parasitoids of three mealybug pests (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), Planococcus ficus (Signoret), Pseudococcus sociabilis Hambleton, and Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret) have been identified for the first time in Brazil. Mealybugs were collected in fruit-growing areas along southern Brazil during 2013-2016. An integrative approach, combining morphological and molecular methods, was used to identify the Brazilian parasitoids to the species level. Fifteen species were recorded, including 14 primary parasitoids belonging to Encyrtidae and Platygastridae and a single secondary parasitoid species belonging to Signiphoridae. Abstract: International audience; The bacterium Paenibacillus larvae and the mite Varroa destructor are two of the most severe biotic stressors affecting honeybees and are responsible for American foulbrood and varroosis respectively. To control these pathogens, beekeepers regularly apply synthetic acaricides or antibiotics to parasitized hives. However, antibiotic and acaricide overuse over time leads to resistance in bacteria strains and mite populations respectively, not to mention the residual contamination of bee products with these chemicals. The development of alternative and effective control methods of bee diseases is therefore crucial. In recent years, natural substances from plant extracts have emerged as the basis of suitable control methods to treat bee colonies parasitized by both P. larvae and V. destructor. Our aim was to evaluate the bioactivity of ethanolic and methanolic hop leaf extract (species: Humulus lupulus L, varieties: Victoria, Spalt, and Cascade) against P. larvae, V. destructor, and A. mellifera. The bactericidal activity against P. larvae was evaluated by the broth microdilution method. Topical administration protocols were used to determine the bioactivity of hop extracts on V. destructor and A. mellifera. Total polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, and antioxidant capacity were determined for each hop leaf extract tested. The Victoria extract had the highest concentration of phenolic compounds, whereas Cascade and Victoria extracts had higher concentrations of the glycoside saponin. All hop extracts presented low toxicity against A. mellifera bees after 48 h of topical administration (except for Cascade ethanolic extract which reached a maximum of 36% of bee mortality). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values ranged from 0.69 to 2.75 mg/kg for the Cascade variety, 1.38 to 5.5 mg/kg for the Spalt variety, and 5.5 to 11 mg/kg for the Victoria variety. After 48 h, the acaricidal activity for the ethanolic extract of the Victoria variety reached a value close to 80%, while the methanolic extract of Cascade showed an acaricidal activity close to 70%. The results reported in this study support the potential use of methanolic and ethanolic extracts of hop leaves from Argentina as promising natural alternatives for varroosis and American foulbrood control.

Abstract: International audience; A simple route to synthesize polyhedral silsesquioxanes, (RSiO1.5)n, by the hydrolytic condensation of modified aminosilanes, is reported. The starting material was N-(beta-aminoethyl)-gamma- aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, a trifunctional aminosilane. It was reacted with a stoichiometric amount of phenylglycidyl ether in sealed ampules at 50 °C for 24 h, leading to the trisubstituted product plus a series of oligomers arising from the intermolecular reaction between methoxysilane groups and the secondary hydroxyls generated by the epoxy-amine reaction. When this product was subjected to hydrolytic condensation using a variety of catalysts (HCl, NaOH, HCOOH) and a thermal cycle attaining 150 °C, polyhedral silsesquioxanes (SSQO) were obtained. Their molar mass was independent of reaction conditions as revealed by size exclusion chromatography. Characterization by 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR suggested that the main product was a mixture of polyhedral SSQO with n ) 8 and 10; i.e., T8 and T10. Due to the high OH functionality, i.e., 24 OH groups in T8 and 30 OH groups in T10 polyhedra, the synthesized product may be used as a cross-linking unit of very high functionality or as a modifier for several polymeric materials.

Abstract: International audience; The plant-growth-promoting bacterium Azospirillum brasilense is able to associate with the microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana. Attachment of A. brasilense increases the metabolic performances of the microalgae. Recent genome analyses have revealed that the A. brasilense Az39 genome contains two complete sets of genes encoding type VI secretion systems (T6SS), including the T6SS1 that is induced by the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) phytohormone. The T6SS is a multiprotein machine, widespread in Gram-negative bacteria, that delivers protein effectors in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Here we show that the A. brasilense T6SS is required for Chlorella-Azospirillum synthetic mutualism. Our data demonstrate that the T6SS is an important determinant to promote production of lipids, carbohydrates and photosynthetic pigments by the microalgae. We further show that this is likely due to the role of the T6SS during the attachment stage and for the production of IAA phytohormones. Finally, we demonstrate that the A. brasilense T6SS provides antagonistic activities against a number of plant pathogens such as Agrobacterium, Pectobacterium, Dickeya and Ralstonia species in vitro, suggesting that, in addition to promoting growth, A. brasilense might confer T6SS-dependent bio-control protection to microalgae and plants against bacterial pathogens.

Abstract: The influence of annealing temperature on the fracture behaviour of a commercial extrusion-grade isotactic polypropylene was studied. Fracture mechanics analysis was carried out at room temperature and at a low crosshead speed underJ-controlled conditions. Parameters characterizing fracture initiation,JIC, and crack propagation,TM, were determined. Some thermal treatments induced “ductile instability” after a certain amount of crack extension while others strongly enhanced the fracture toughness parameters and promoted completely stable behaviour. Aiming to correlate mechanical properties with the supermolecular structure, the different morphologies induced by thermal treatments were studied by differential thermal analysis. In addition, a qualitative fracture surface analysis was carried out by SEM. Craze formation appeared to be the principal plastic deformation mechanism present. The degree of crystallinity and the degree of interconnection related to the thermal treatment the sample had undergone, are the main structural factors controlling fracture performance.
