- Abstract
Therapy resistance is a major roadblock in oncology. Exacerbation of molecular dysfunctions typical of cancer cells have proven effective in twisting oncogenic mechanisms to lethal conditions, thus offering new therapeutic avenues for cancer treatment. Here, we demonstrate that selective agonists of Transient Receptor Potential cation channel subfamily M member 8 (TRPM8), a cation channel characteristic of the prostate epithelium frequently overexpressed in advanced stage III/IV prostate cancers (PCa), sensitize therapy refractory models of PCa to radio, chemo or hormonal treatment. Overall, our study demonstrates that pharmacological-induced Ca2+ cytotoxicity is an actionable strategy to sensitize cancer cells to standard therapies.

- Abstract
In this thesis we present a new interesting version of the mixed flow shop se-quencing problem, which at the same time is a version of the classic flow shop,a very common topic on operations research.We propose a genetic algorithm to solve it that we will compare at the endwith a simple initial genetic-based algorithm previously design. For that wefirst focus on the crossover operator as we consider it the most challenging parton a sequencing problem. We study and compare 5 different crossover operatorsand we choose the one that performs better. Finally we calibrate the populationsize, the weight of mutation and crossover operators on the algorithm and alsothe mutations operator itself.The goal of the thesis is to better understand the specific mixed flow shopproblem version presented and design a genetic algorithm that clearly improvesthe performance of the initial algorithm

- Abstract
Following a recent experimental study [Wenz et al. Science 342, 457 (2013)] on the achievement of the thermodynamic limit in a system of one-dimensional (1D) fermions, the project aims to investigate theoretically a similar problem for 1D Bose gases. By considering a system of bosons confined in a 1D harmonic trap and interacting with a single impurity, the plan is to calculate the binding energy of the impurity as the number of bosons in the bath is increased. The analysis will be performed by varying both the coupling strength of the bath and the interspecies interactio, The main objective of this project is to find the binding energy of an impurity interacting with a one-dimensional bosonic system of increasing size for different coupling strengths g. Both the bosons as well as the impurity interact in pairs by means of a contact potential. The coupling strength between the bosons and between the impurity and the bosons is assumed to be the same. The bosonic bath is placed in an harmonic trap to mimic a very likely experimental situation. The methods used will be based on variational and diffusion Monte-Carlo simulations which allow for an exact treatment of the problem. Apart from this numerical calculation, a theoretical study combining Lieb-Liniger theory and local density approximation will be performed in order to determine the binding energy between the impurity and the bosonic bath in the thermodynamic limit. Comparing this theoretical prediction with the DMC results, we can determine when the system has reached a sufficiently large size in order to be properly described by the thermodynamic limit., El principal objetivo de este proyecto es encontrar la energía de unión de una impureza interaccionando con un sistema bosónico unidimensional para distintos valores de la constante de acoplamiento g y tamaños de baño creciente. Tanto los bosones como la impureza interaccionan en pares a través de un potencial de contacto. La fuerza de acoplamiento entre los bosones y entre los bosones y la impureza se ha considerado igual. El baño de bosones se ha colocado en una trampa armónica unidimensional para imitar una situación experimental altamente probable. Los métodos utilizados se han basado en simulaciones variacionales y de difusión Monte Carlo que permiten un tratamiento exacto del problema. A parte de este cálculo numérico, también se realiza un estudio teórico combinando la teoría de Lieb-Liniger y la aproximación de densidad local para determinar la interacción entre la impureza y el baño de bosones en el límite termodinámico. Comparando esta predicción teórica con los resultados DMC, podemos determinar cuando el sistema ha alcanzado un tamaño lo suficientemente grande para ser descrito por teoría termodinámica., El principal objectiu d'aquest projecte és trobar l'energia d'unió entre una impuresa que interacciona amb un bany de bosons per un nombre de bosons creixent i vàries forces d'interacció g diferents. Il contenuto della tesi riguarda gli aspetti delle fonti rinnovabili e dell' efficienza energetica degli edifici per Italia in generale e per la regione del Trentino Alto Adige in particolare. Inizialmente viene riassunta la situazione della produzione di energia da fonte rinnovabile, facendo un confronto tra la situazione dell Italia e quella Spagna, che ha delle capacità e delle risorse energetiche rinnovabili simili a quelle dell Italia. La parte fondamentale della tesi ha riguardato l'analisi dell' efficienza energetica degli imianti e dell' edificio, sede della società di transporti pubblici Trentino Trasporti, L'edificio è sitio in via Innsbruck 65 nella città di Trento ed +e dotato di un impianto fotovoltaico della potenza nominale di 1600 kWp, realizzato sulla copertura del parcheggio dei pullman. L'analisi energetica ha preso in esame i consumi elettrici e termici degli impianti dell' edificio: Sono stati calcolati gli indici di consumo energetico specifico rferiti alla superficie dell' edificio e sono state calcolate le emissioni complessive di CO2. Infine sono state elaborate alcune ipotesi di intervento per migliorare le condizioni di efficienza e ridurre i consumi energetici., Outgoing

Il presente documento ha come obiettivo lo studio, il disegno e lo sviluppo di uno scaffale per una biblioteca. Cominciando da i prodotti che attualmente esistono e combinandoli con nuovi disegni, idee e tecnologie, si è arrivato a l’elaborazione di un prodotte efficace, attrattivo e innovatore. Per il suo corretto svoluppo si sono elaborati tutti i tipi di studi e analisi usando i metodi più funzionali e pratici che si conoscono. Così si sono analizzati i tipi di utenti che intervengono e interagiscono con il prodotto, lo stato della tencica e di mercato attuale e anche le funzioni che danno al prodotto e infine i rischi. Per il suo disegno è intervenuta la creatività e gli obiettivi che si voleva che compissero per arrivare a un prodotto soddisfacente e promettente. L’incorporazione delle nuove tecnologie digitali ha elevato il prodotto ad un livello diverso di quello che all’inizio si era previsto facendolo molto interesante per introdurlo nel mercato. Un sistema di ricerca del materiale apporta al prodotto un plus che può portare un gran avanzamento per lo sviluppo di nuove librerie o che così almeno si è voluto. Inoltre l'incorporazione di nuovi tipi di complementi, aggiunti a quelli già conosciuti, concedono al prodotto un'aria speciale che lo fa caratteristico ed unico. Come risultato si è ottenuto non solo l'ottenimento di una libreria molto attraente in presenza dell'utente ma anche molto pratica e moderna. Da qui, giudicate voi stessi., Outgoing

28. Policy sull’accesso aperto (Open Access) alla letteratura scientifica

- Abstract
On January 29th 2014 the University of Trento adopted an Open Access policy which applies to all its members and their publications (scientific literature), except the works destined to commercial publishing with payment of royalties (unless otherwise specified by the author). The policy consists in an Immediate Deposit and Optional Access (ID-OA) mandate: as soon as a work is accepted for publication, it must be deposited in the University Open Access Current Research Information System (CRIS) in the digital final accepted draft (whenever possible, the publisher’s proprietary PDF version). The deposit consists in the full text and bibliographic/contextual metadata. Upon careful check of the intellectual property rights, the work is published in OA through the University Institutional Open Access Repository, immediately after the deposit or within six (twelve for human or social sciences) months from the date of acceptance.

International audience; We focus on the problem of satellite rendezvous between two spacecraft in elliptic orbits. Using a linearized model of the relative dynamics, we first propose a periodic similarity transformation based on Floquet-Lyapunov theory, leading to a set of coordinates under which the free motion is linear time-invariant. Then we address the problem of impulsive control of satellite rendezvous as a hybrid dynamical system, and we show that the arising elegant representation enables designing impulsive control laws with different trade-offs between computational complexity and fuel consumption. The adopted hybrid formalism allows us to prove suitable stability properties induced by the proposed controllers. The results are comparatively illustrated on simulation examples.

Experiencing tactile facial stimulation while seeing synchronous stimulations delivered to another's face induces enfacement, i.e. the subjective experience of ownership over the other's face. The synchronous Interpersonal Multisensory Stimulation (IMS) procedure leading to enfacement induces changes beyond the bodily sense of self, such as increased feeling of closeness between self and other. However, evidence for such an influence of IMS on higher-level self-other representations remains limited. Moreover, research has been restricted to settings involving a same-sex other. The current study tested, in female participants, whether IMS could promote social closeness and attraction toward an opposite-sex other. Across two experiments, enfacement with an opposite-sex face was successfully obtained. Synchronous (vs. asynchronous) IMS yielded greater closeness with the other and induced greater Liking and Attraction scores. These novel findings add further evidence to the existence of a link between body representation and social cognition. Implications for interpersonal attraction are discussed.

To facilitate the teaching of spoken French in class, the CLAPI-FLE platform gives access to some forty video and audio extracts of naturally occurring interactions. They are based on everyday situations and recorded in various private or professional contexts: dinner talks with friends or family, business meetings, medical consultations, purchases in small shops, guided tours, games, invitations and phone calls, etc. In addition to these extracts, which are described, transcribed and presented with pedagogical guidelines, the interactionists of the ICAR laboratory, in collaboration with a network of didactician partners, designed new thematic resources. They are based on their research and aim to match the needs of language teachers (Ravazzolo et al. 2015, Thomas et al. 2016, Alberdi et al. 2018). This article will develop our methodological approach and analyze how these resources can be used in classes according to different teaching purposes for French and French linguistic learnings. It will also shed light on the learners’ experience and perspective., Pour faciliter l'enseignement du français oral en situation de classe, la plateforme CLAPI-FLE rend disponible une quarantaine d'extraits vidéo et audio de corpus naturels d'interactions correspondant à des situations du quotidien dans des contextes privés ou professionnels variés : repas entre amis ou en famille, réunions professionnelles, consultations médicales, achats dans des commerces, visites guidées, sessions de jeux, invitations et appels téléphoniques. En parallèle de ces extraits décrits, transcrits et didactisés, les interactionnistes du laboratoire ICAR construisent, en collaboration avec un réseau de partenaires didacticiens, de nouvelles ressources thématiques basées sur leurs travaux de recherche et répondant aux besoins des enseignants (Ravazzolo et al. 2015, Thomas et al. 2016, Alberdi et al. 2018). Cet article développera l'approche méthodologique qui a conduit à cette plateforme et analysera l'exploitation de ces ressources et leur articulation en situation de classe pour des objectifs d'enseignement variés en français et en linguistique française. Il apportera également un éclairage sur les retours d'expérience vécus par les étudiants.

The impact of seasonal fluctuations linked to monsoon and irrigation generates redox oscillations in the subsurface, influencing the release of arsenic (As) in aquifers. Here, the biogeochemical control on As mobility was investigated in batch experiments using redox cycling bioreactors and As- and SO42−-amended sediment. Redox potential (Eh) oscillations between anoxic (−300–0 mV) and oxic condition (0–500 mV) were implemented by automatically modulating an admixture of N2/CO2 or compressed air. A carbon source (cellobiose, a monomer of cellulose) was added at the beginning of each reducing cycle to stimulate the metabolism of the native microbial community. Results show that successive redox cycles can decrease arsenic mobility by up to 92% during reducing conditions. Anoxic conditions drive mainly the conversion of soluble As(V) to As(III) in contrast to oxic conditions. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA amplified from the sediments revealed the presence of sulfate and iron – reducing bacteria, confirming that sulfate and iron reduction are key factors for As immobilization from the aqueous phase. As and S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy suggested the association of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides and the importance of pyrite (FeS2(s)), rather than poorly ordered mackinawite (FeS(s)), for As sequestration under oxidizing and reducing conditions, respectively. Finally, these findings suggest a role for elemental sulfur in mediating aqueous thioarsenates formation in As-contaminated groundwater of the Mekong delta.

With a continuous-time formulation of the multihop decomposition, we propose a distributed hybrid observer for a sensor network where the plant and local observers run in continuous time and the information exchange among the sensing nodes is sampled-data. Process disturbances, measurement noise and communication noise are considered, and we prove that under some necessary detectability assumptions the observer gains can be tuned to guarantee exponential ISS with a prescribeda convergence rate. Simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed observer.

Recent fMRI studies have investigated brain activity involved in the feeling of regret and disappointment by manipulating the feedback participants saw after making a decision to play certain gambles: full-feedback (regret: participant sees the outcomes from both the chosen and unchosen gamble) vs. partial-feedback (disappointment: participant only sees the outcome from chosen gamble). However, regret and disappointment are also characterized by differential agency attribution: personal agency for regret, external agency for disappointment. In this study, we investigate the neural correlates of these two characterizations of regret and disappointment using magnetoencephalography (MEG). To do this, we experimentally induced each emotion by manipulating feedback (chosen gamble vs. unchosen gamble), agency (human vs. computer choice) and outcomes (win vs. loss) in a fully randomized design. At the behavioral level the emotional experience of regret and disappointment were indeed affected by both feedback and agency manipulations. These emotions also differentially affect subsequent choices, with regret leading to riskier behavior. At the neural level both feedback and agency affected the brain responses associated with regret and disappointment, demonstrating differential localization in the brain for each. Notably, feedback regret showed greater brain activity in the right anterior and posterior regions, with agency regret producing greater activity in the left anterior region. These findings extend the evidence for neural activity in processing both regret and disappointment by highlighting for the first time the respective importance of feedback and agency, as well as outlining the temporal dynamics of these emotions. Revealing universal behaviours is a hallmark of statistical physics. Phenomena such as the stochastic growth of crystalline surfaces(1) and of interfaces in bacterial colonies(2), and spin transport in quantum magnets(3-6) all belong to the same universality class, despite the great plurality of physical mechanisms they involve at the microscopic level. More specifically, in all these systems, space-time correlations show power-law scalings characterized by universal critical exponents. This universality stems from a common underlying effective dynamics governed by the nonlinear stochastic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation(7). Recent theoretical works have suggested that this dynamics also emerges in the phase of out-of-equilibrium systems showing macroscopic spontaneous coherence(8-17). Here we experimentally demonstrate that the evolution of the phase in a driven-dissipative one-dimensional polariton condensate falls in the KPZ universality class. Our demonstration relies on a direct measurement of KPZ space-time scaling laws(18,19), combined with a theoretical analysis that reveals other key signatures of this universality class. Our results highlight fundamental physical differences between out-of-equilibrium condensates and their equilibrium counterparts, and open a paradigm for exploring universal behaviours in driven open quantum systems.

International audience; Human activity and associated landscape modifications alter the movements of animals with consequences for populations and ecosystems worldwide. Species performing long-distance movements are thought to be particularly sensitive to human impact. Despite the increasing anthropogenic pressure, it remains challenging to understand and predict animals' responses to human activity. Here we address this knowledge gap using 1206 Global Positioning System movement trajectories of 815 individuals from 14 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 14 elk (Cervus canadensis) populations spanning wide environmental gradients, namely the latitudinal range from the Alps to Scandinavia in Europe, and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in North America. We measured individual-level movements relative to the environmental context, or movement expression, using the standardized metric Intensity of Use, reflecting both the directionality and extent of movements. We expected movement expression to be affected by resource (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) predictability and topography, but those factors to be superseded by human impact. Red deer and elk movement expression varied along a continuum, from highly segmented trajectories over relatively small areas (high intensity of use), to directed transitions through restricted corridors (low intensity of use). Human activity (Human Footprint Index, HFI) was the strongest driver of movement expression, with a steep increase in Intensity of Use as HFI increased, but only until a threshold was reached. After exceeding this level of impact, the Intensity of Use remained unchanged. These results indicate the overall sensitivity of Cervus movement expression to human activity and suggest a limitation of plastic responses under high human pressure, despite the species also occurring in human-dominated landscapes. Our work represents the first comparison of metric-based movement expression across widely distributed populations of a deer genus, contributing to the understanding and prediction of animals' responses to human activity.

In contemporary society, social networks accelerate decision dynamics causing a rapid switch of opinions in a number of fields, including the prevention of infectious diseases by means of vaccines. This means that opinion dynamics can nowadays be much faster than the spread of epidemics. Hence, we propose a Susceptible-Infectious-Removed epidemic model coupled with an evolutionary vaccination game embedding the public health system efforts to increase vaccine uptake. This results in a global system ``epidemic model + evolutionary game''. The epidemiological novelty of this work is that we assume that the switching to the strategy ``pro vaccine'' depends on the incidence of the disease. As a consequence of the above-mentioned accelerated decisions, the dynamics of the system acts on two different scales: a fast scale for the vaccine decisions and a slower scale for the spread of the disease. Another, and more methodological, element of novelty is that we apply Geometrical Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) to such a two-scale model and we then compare the geometric analysis with the Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (QSSA) approach, showing a criticality in the latter. Later, we apply the GSPT approach to the disease prevalence-based model already studied in (Della Marca and d'Onofrio, Comm Nonl Sci Num Sim, 2021) via the QSSA approach by considering medium-large values of the strategy switching parameter., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures

Low-dimensional materials have remarkable properties that are distinct from their bulk counterparts. A paradigmatic example is Ising superconductivity that occurs in monolayer materials such as NbSe2 which show a strong violation of the Pauli limit. In monolayers, this occurs due to a combination of broken inversion symmetry and spin-orbit coupling that locks the spins of the electrons out-of-plane. Bulk NbSe2 is centrosymmetric and is therefore not an Ising superconductor. We show that bulk misfit compound superconductors, (LaSe)1.14(NbSe2) and (LaSe)1.14(NbSe2)2, comprised of monolayers and bilayers of NbSe2, exhibit unexpected Ising protection with a Pauli-limit violation comparable to monolayer NbSe2, despite formally having inversion symmetry. We study these misfit compounds using complementary experimental methods in combination with first-principles calculations. We propose theoretical mechanisms of how the Ising protection can survive in bulk materials. We show how some of these mechanisms operate in these bulk compounds due to a concerted effect of charge-transfer, defects, reduction of interlayer hopping, and stacking. This highlights how Ising superconductivity can, unexpectedly, arise in bulk materials, and possibly enable the design of bulk superconductors that are resilient to magnetic fields., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 4 extended data items

We propose a compartmental model for a disease with temporary immunity and secondary infections. From our assumptions on the parameters involved in the model, the system naturally evolves in three time scales. We characterize the equilibria of the system and analyze their stability. We find conditions for the existence of two endemic equilibria, for some cases in which $\mathcal{R}_0 < 1$. Then, we unravel the interplay of the three time scales, providing conditions to foresee whether the system evolves in all three scales, or only in the fast and the intermediate ones. We used the electroencephalogram (EEG) to investigate whether positive and negative performance feedbacks exert different long-lasting modulations of electrical activity in a reasoning task. Nine college students serially tested hypotheses concerning a hidden rule by judging its presence or absence in triplets of digits, and revised them on the basis of an exogenous performance feedback. The scaling properties of the transition period between feedback and triplet presentation were investigated with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). DFA showed temporal scale-free dynamics of EEG activity in both feedback conditions for time scales larger than 150 ms. Furthermore, DFA revealed that negative feedback elicits significantly higher scaling exponents than positive feedback. This effect covers a wide network comprising parieto-occipital and left frontal regions. We thus showed that specific task demands can modify the temporal scale-free dynamics of the ongoing brain activity. Putative neural correlates of these long-lasting feedback-specific modulations are proposed.

Oxide-glass matrices, in particular, offer the advantage of relatively simple fabrication processes--both for bulk glasses and optical fibers--and have demonstrated quite good properties in the 1.5 µm wavelength band. Here we present some results we have obtained in the development of different silica-based glasses and in their application to the production of integrated optical amplifiers and microspherical lasers. As to the former application, two classes of silica glasses have been produced and investigated, namely a melted soda-lime-alumino-silicate glass and a sol-gel silica-hafnia glass. Both of them exhibit a wide emission bandwidth and seem quite promising for broadband optical amplifiers. We also demonstrated low-threshold microlasers, based on whispering gallery mode spherical resonators, fabricated in different oxide glasses.

We study existence, uniqueness, and regularity properties of the Dirichlet problem related to fractional Dirichlet energy minimizers in a complete doubling metric measure space $(X,d_X,\mu_X)$ satisfying a $2$-Poincar\'e inequality. Given a bounded domain $\Omega\subset X$ with $\mu_X(X\setminus\Omega)>0$, and a function $f$ in the Besov class $B^\theta_{2,2}(X)\cap L^2(X)$, we study the problem of finding a function $u\in B^\theta_{2,2}(X)$ such that $u=f$ in $X\setminus\Omega$ and $\mathcal{E}_\theta(u,u)\le \mathcal{E}_\theta(h,h)$ whenever $h\in B^\theta_{2,2}(X)$ with $h=f$ in $X\setminus\Omega$. We show that such a solution always exists and that this solution is unique. We also show that the solution is locally H\"older continuous on $\Omega$, and satisfies a non-local maximum and strong maximum principle. People often confuse smell loss with taste loss, so it is unclear how much gustatory function is reduced in patients self-reporting taste loss. Our pre-registered cross-sectional study design included an online survey in 12 languages with instructions for self-administering chemosensory tests with ten household items. Between June 2020 and March 2021, 10,953 individuals participated. Of these, 3,356 self-reported a positive and 602 a negative COVID-19 diagnosis (COVID+ and COVID-, respectively); 1,267 were awaiting test results (COVID?). The rest reported no respiratory illness and were grouped by symptoms: sudden smell/taste changes (STC, N=4,445), other symptoms excluding smell or taste loss (OthS, N=832), and no symptoms (NoS, N=416). Taste, smell, and oral irritation intensities and self-assessed abilities were rated on visual analog scales. Compared to the NoS group, COVID+ was associated with a 21% reduction in taste (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 15-28%), 47% in smell (95%-CI: 37-56%), and 17% in oral irritation (95%-CI: 10-25%) intensity. In all groups, perceived intensity of smell (r=0.84), taste (r=0.68), and oral irritation (r=0.37) was correlated. Our findings suggest most reports of taste dysfunction with COVID-19 were genuine and not due to misinterpreting smell loss as taste loss (i.e., a classical taste-flavor confusion). Assessing smell and taste intensity of household items is a promising, cost-effective screening tool that complements self-reports and helps to disentangle taste loss from smell loss. However, it does not replace standardized validated psychophysical tests.

International audience; This volume collects the lecture notes of the school TiME2019 (Treasures in Mathematical Encounters). The aim of this book is manifold, it intends to overview the wide topic of algebraic curves and surfaces (also with a view to higher dimensional varieties) from different aspects: the historical development that led to the theory of algebraic surfaces and the classification theorem of algebraic surfaces by Castelnuovo and Enriques; the use of such a classical geometric approach, as the one introduced by Castelnuovo, to study linear systems of hypersurfaces; and the algebraic methods used to find implicit equations of parametrized algebraic curves and surfaces, ranging from classical elimination theory to more modern tools involving syzygy theory and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Since our subject has a long and venerable history, this book cannot cover all the details of this broad topic, theory and applications, but it is meant to serve as a guide for both young mathematicians to approach the subject from a classical and yet computational perspective, and for experienced researchers as a valuable source for recent applications.

International audience; The reliability evaluation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) executed on Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) is a challenging problem since the hardware architecture is highly complex and the software frameworks are composed of many layers of abstraction. While software-level fault injection is a common and fast way to evaluate the reliability of complex applications, it may produce unrealistic results since it has limited access to the hardware resources and the adopted fault models may be too naive (i.e., single and double bit flip). Contrarily, physical fault injection with neutron beam provides realistic error rates but lacks fault propagation visibility. This paper proposes a characterization of the DNN fault model combining both neutron beam experiments and fault injection at software level. We exposed GPUs running General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) and DNNs to beam neutrons to measure their error rate. On DNNs, we observe that the percentage of critical errors can be up to 61%, and show that ECC is ineffective in reducing critical errors. We then performed a complementary software-level fault injection, using fault models derived from RTL simulations. Our results show that by injecting complex fault models, the YOLOv3 misdetection rate is validated to be very close to the rate measured with beam experiments, which is 8.66× higher than the one measured with fault injection using only single-bit flips.
