Abstract: This study aims to inventory plants and traditional medicinal recipes used by the population of Tanda (Gontougo region, Côte d’Ivoire) to boost milk production in women.Using a questionnaire, the methods consisted in carrying out a survey near the traditional medicine actors of 15 localities. Among 47 actors of traditional medicine aged from 34 to 80 years investigated, 70.21 % were women. These women had more knowledge on the galactagogue plants than the men (29.79 % of the actors). They were represented by matrons, specialists in lactation, healers and saleswomen of medicinal plants. Among about fifteen listed galactagogue plants, Euphorbia hirta (Euphorbiaceae) was the most used plant. Leaves represented the majority of the medicinal preparations (73.33 %). These preparations were in 66.67 % of the cases associated with various other biological or mineral ingredients (pepper, meat, vegetables, ash, kaolin…). The direct application of crushings on mammary glands (cutaneous way) by friction constituted the principal route of administration (66.67 % of the medical receipts).Traditional medicine actors of the town of Tanda are actively interested in the search of solutions to the lacteal secretion issues which occur in the breast-feeding mothers. They have about fifteen medicinal plants which enable them to stimulate the production of maternal milk when a need is expressed.

Abstract: Background: Biotic and abiotic disturbances such as frequent wildfires and herbivory contribute to maintain trees and grasses coexistence in savanna ecosystems. In comparison to stems and leaves, exposed to fire and herbivory, the roots, protected by being belowground, are less affected by these disturbances. Therefore, indirect estimation of belowground biomass (BGB) of savanna trees from simple allometric relations based on stem measurements can lead to major biases. Aims: In this study we explored how the Leaf ontogenetic change index (LOCI), a quantitative index based on leaf heteroblastic development, can provide an accurate estimate of BGB in Cussonia arborea, a widespread species in West African humid savannas. Methodology: We examined leaf morphometrics on post-fire resprouts of 40 individuals to assess whether LOCI can inform on plant age. We then analyzed by log-level regressions the variation of LOCI in relation to plant stem volume. Subsequently, we studied the variation of BGB according to stem volume, and as a function of both stem volume and LOCI, which allowed us to evaluate the contribution of LOCI to BGB estimation. BGB was obtained destructively by digging up roots and weighing total dry mass of 25 individuals including small and large trees. Statistical analyses were done with the R software. Place and Duration of Study: Study was performed in the Lamto Scientific Reserve, Côte d’Ivoire, between May 2020 and June 2021. Results: Using the stem volume as single explanatory variable of BGB, the regression model provided an adjusted R2 of 0.71. Association of the stem volume with LOCI increased the adjusted R2 from 0.71 to 0.90. Conclusion: Combining LOCI with a measure of stem size provides better estimate of BGB in C. arborea compared to estimate based on stem size only. Since a large proportion of woody species in frequently disturbed environments exhibit an overall strategies promoting persistence, future works should evaluate how these strategies are modulated during ontogeny and can explain biomass variation over time.

Abstract: International audience; Many anticounterfeiting tags rely on images intricate in different color and/or different polarization states to create optical effects invisible in conventional observation conditions. We build here an imaging micropolarimeter based on the dual rotating compensator system and using the color capabilities of cameras to yield the full polarimetric information for any color coordinates in one acquisition step. After correction for the camera response, the full color image reconstructed from the polarimetric response is validated by the comparison with images obtained in an optical microscope fitted with polarizers.

Abstract: Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Abstract: The supply of drinking water is a vital challenge for the people who live on the African continent, as this continent is experiencing strong demographic growth and therefore increasing water demands. To meet these needs, surface water resources are becoming increasingly mobilized because underground resources are not always available or have already been overexploited. This situation is the case in the region of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, where the drinking water deficit is a growing problem and it is therefore necessary to mobilize new water resources to ensure the supply of drinking water. Among the potential resources, local managers have identified a freshwater lagoon, Lagoon Aghien, That is in close proximity to the city of Abidjan. With the aim of enhancing knowledge on the ecological functioning of the lagoon and contributing to the assessment of its ability to provide drinking water, several physical and chemical parameters of the water and the phytoplankton community of the lagoon were monitored for 17 months (December 2016-April 2018) at six sampling stations. Our findings show that the lagoon is eutrophic, as evidenced by the high concentrations of total phosphorus (>140 μg L-1), nitrogen (1.36 mg L-1) and average chlorophyll-a (26 to 167 μg L-1) concentrations. The phytoplankton community in the lagoon is dominated by genera typical of eutrophic environments including mixotrophic genera such as Peridinium and by cyanobacteria such as Cylindrospermopsis/Raphidiopsis, Microcystis and Dolichospermum that can potentially produce cyanotoxins. The two rainfall peaks that occur in June and October appeared to be major events in terms of nutrient flows entering the lagoon, and the dynamics of these flows are complex. Significant differences were also found in the nutrient concentrations and to a lesser extent in the phytoplankton communities among the different stations, especially during the rainfall peaks. Overall, these results reveal that the quality of the lagoon’s water is already severely degraded, and this degradation could increase in future years due to increasing urbanization in the watershed. These results therefore raise questions about the potential use of the lagoon as a source of drinking water if measures are not taken very quickly to protect this lagoon from increasing eutrophication and other pollution sources.

Abstract: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak has highlighted the need for broad-spectrum antivirals against coronaviruses (CoVs). Here, pheophorbide a (Pba) was identified as a highly active antiviral molecule against human CoV-229E after bioguided fractionation of plant extracts. The antiviral activity of Pba was subsequently shown for SARS-CoV-2 and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and its mechanism of action was further assessed, showing that Pba is an inhibitor of coronavirus entry by directly targeting the viral particle. Interestingly, the antiviral activity of Pba depends on light exposure, and Pba was shown to inhibit virus-cell fusion by stiffening the viral membrane, as demonstrated by cryoelectron microscopy. Moreover, Pba was shown to be broadly active against several other enveloped viruses and reduced SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV replication in primary human bronchial epithelial cells. Pba is the first described natural antiviral against SARS-CoV-2 with direct photosensitive virucidal activity that holds potential for COVID-19 therapy or disinfection of SARS-CoV-2-contaminated surfaces.

Abstract: The alkali nitrate mixtures are promising phase change materials (PCMs) in the temperature range (373−573) K for the development of thermal storage systems. In this context, their thermochemical properties and phase diagrams which provide useful thermal information are needed for their better use. In the present paper, the mixtures based on cesium nitrate, lithium nitrate, and sodium nitrate are studied by both experimental and optimization techniques. Thus, a critical analysis of thermodynamic data from literature sources of the phases in the CsNO3-LiNO3-NaNO3 ternary system including the pure components is performed. Therefore, reliable phase change data (enthalpy and temperature) of pure nitrates CsNO3, LiNO3 and NaNO3 are proposed. In addition, by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA), the binary CsNO3-LiNO3 system and two vertical sections ( X C s N O 3 / X L i N O 3 = 1 and X N a N O 3 = 0.2) in the ternary CsNO3-LiNO3-NaNO3 system are investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique is also used to analyze phases in the CsNO3-LiNO3 binary system at room temperature. The CsNO3-LiNO3 binary system is characterized by a congruent equimolar compound Cs0.5Li0.5NO3 which appears at (334 ± 2) K. Two eutectic reactions are found at (445 ± 2) K and (435 ± 2) K, respectively. The system exhibits also a plateau at (427 ± 2) K corresponding to the polymorphic transition of CsNO3. The CsNO3-LiNO3-NaNO3 ternary system shows two ternary eutectic reactions at (408 ± 2) K and (405 ± 2) K, respectively. Combining our results with experimental data available in the literature, an optimization of the thermodynamic parameters in the ternary system is performed with the help of Calphad approach. A reasonable agreement between the calculated results and the experimental data is obtained.

Abstract: International audience; The idea that tropical forest and savanna are alternative states is crucial to how we manage these biomes and predict their future under global change. Large-scale empirical evidence for alternative stable states is limited however and comes mostly from the multimodal distribution of structural aspects of vegetation. These approaches have been criticized, as structure alone cannot separate out wetter savannas from drier forests for example, and there are also technical challenges to mapping vegetation structure in unbiased ways. Here, we develop an alternative approach to delimit the climatic envelope of the two biomes in Africa, using tree species lists gathered for a large number of forest and savanna sites distributed across the continent. Our analyses confirm extensive climatic overlap of forest and savanna, supporting the alternative stable states hypothesis for Africa, and this result is corroborated by paleo-ecological evidence. Further, we find the two biomes to have highly divergent tree species compositions and to represent alternative compositional states. This allowed us to classify tree species as forest vs savanna specialists, with some generalist species that span both biomes. In conjunction with geo-referenced herbarium records, we mapped the forest and savanna distributions across Africa and quantified their environmental limits, which are primarily related to precipitation and seasonality, with a secondary contribution of fire. These results are important for the ongoing efforts to restore African ecosystems, which depend on accurate biome maps to set appropriate targets for the restored states, but also provide novel empirical evidence for broad scale bistability. Significance statement: We develop a biogeographic approach to analyzing the presence of alternative stable states in tropical biomes. Whilst forest-savanna bistability has been widely hypothesized and modeled, empirical evidence has remained scarce and controversial, and here, applying our method to Africa, we provide large scale evidence that there are alternative states in tree species composition of tropical vegetation. Furthermore, our results have produced novel and more accurate maps of the forest and savanna distributions in Africa, which takes into account differences in tree species composition, and a complex suite of determinants. This result is not only important for understanding the biogeography of the continent, but also to guide large-scaled tree planting and restoration efforts planned for the region.

Abstract: International audience; Crinum jagusis a medicinal species of botanical family Amaryllidaceae, widely used in traditional medicine. In present investigation on total alkaloid extracts from leaves, bulbs and roots, the objective was to highlight qualitative and quantitative composition of alkaloids and to determine their antioxidant capacity toward DPPH compared to vitamin C. Qualitative analyses showed in addition and independently of alkaloids, the presence of coumarins and terpenes. DPPH test demonstrated that the total alkaloid extract from Crinum jagusbulbs has a very significant in vitroantioxidant activity with regard to its median DPPH reduction concentration (CR50= 0.026 mg/ml). Alkaloid content estimated of 1.468 ± 0.026 % proves that Crinum jagusbulbs constitute a reservoir of alkaloids.

Abstract: Background Mycobacterium ulcerans is an environmental mycobacterium responsible for an opportunistic, noncontagious tropical infection named Buruli ulcer that necrotizes the skin and the subcutaneous tissues. M. ulcerans is thought to penetrate through breached skin after contact with contaminated wetland environments, yet the exact biotopes where M. ulcerans occurs remain elusive, hence obscuring the epidemiological chain of transmission of this opportunistic pathogen. Methodology/Principal findings Polymerase chain reaction investigations detected M. ulcerans in 39/46 (84.7%) rhizosphere specimens collected in 13 Buruli ulcer-endemic areas in Côte d’Ivoire and 3/20 (15%) specimens collected in a nonendemic area (P = 5.73.E-7); only 3/63 (4.7%) sediment specimens from sediment surrounding the rhizospheres were positive in endemic area (P = 6.51.E-12). High-throughput sequencing further detected three PCR-positive plants, Croton hirtus, Corton kongensis and Oriza sativa var. japonica (rice), in the rectal content of two M. ulcerans-positive wild Thryonomys swinderianus grasscutters that were hunted in Buruli ulcer-endemic areas, while no PCR-positive plants were detected in the rectal content of two negative control animals that were farmed in a nonendemic area. Conclusions/Significance Our data suggest an alimentary chain of transmission of M. ulcerans from plants to T. swinderianus grasscutters and people that utilize T. swinderianus as bush meat in Buruli ulcer-endemic areas in Côte d’Ivoire. Guidance to adopt protective measures and avoid any direct contact with potentially contaminated rhizospheres and with grasscutter intestinal content when preparing the animals for cooking should be established for at-risk populations., Author summary Buruli ulcer caused by inoculated Mycobacterium ulcerans is a tropical infection fibrosing subcutaneous tissues thus causing severe disabilities. The reservoir and the mode of transmission of M. ulcerans remain elusive. Here, using molecular approaches, we traced M. ulcerans along an alimentary chain comprising some plants and a small herbivore named Thryonomys swinderianus (grasscutters), in Côte d’Ivoire. Grasscutters are hunted animals, sold as bush meat. People in Buruli ulcer endemic regions spend much time in close contacts with this animal during hunting and subsequent evisceration with unprotected hands increasing their risk of contamination. Our findings demonstrate for the first time, the transmission of M. ulcerans through a food-chain and propose prophylactic measures against Buruli ulcer in Côte d’Ivoire.

Abstract: Palmyrah trees (Borassus aethiopum Mart., Arecaceae) are more or less concerned by threat in their ecological area. This work aims to determine the spatial structure and dynamics of Palmyrah population in Lamto reserve, in the transition area of forest-savannah.Land cover characterization by the neural net algorithm was carried out. Environmental characterization was possible thanks to ground temperature like (LST, Land Surface Temperature), ground moisture (NDWI, Normalized Difference Water Index) algorithms on LANDSAT data (TM 1988, ETM+ 2002 & OLI+ 2015) and Elevation digital model of SRTM data, and formulated using ENVI 5.1 software. Pattern analysis like multidistances Ripley Function K (d) and neighbors distances (Average Nearest Neighbor) were applied to determine the extrinsic structure of Palmyrah trees. Cluster and outlier analysis (Local Anselin Moran’s I) was used for intrinsic structuring. The crossing in GIS of environmental data of Cluster and Outlier Analysis makes it possible to emphasize the environmental influence through clusters responses pace and the plants abundances. Detection and delineation of Palmyrah foliar crown on a very high resolution multispectral image data (GeoEye 1) were carried out using rule classification (rule-based classification) in ENVI. This study shows that forests area is increase of 240 ha. It passed from 21.42 % (610.42 ha) in 1988 to 29.85% (850.67 ha) in 2015, in spite of the bush fires. Palmyrah trees are aggregated and heterogeneous at seedling stage. Adults’ structure shows a random distribution with a homogeneous character. Palmyrah trees are more abundant with unimodal responses paces. Favorable ground temperatures and moistures to palmyrah trees abundance are function to the savannah type which shelters it. This analysis shows that the environmental factors control Palmyrah trees distribution. The detection assessment of Palmyrah trees to the search threshold for 10 meters made it possible to obtain a good precision according to the biological stage. It is more than 90% among palmyrah adult’s trees and nearly 50% at the juvenile’s stages.; Les rôniers (Borassus aethiopum Mart., Arecaceae) sont plus ou moins concernés par la menace dans leur milieu écologique. La détection et délinéation de la couronne foliaire des rôniers sur une image multispectrale (GeoEye 1) de très haute résolution ont été effectuées à l’aide de la classification à base de règle (rule-based classification) dans ENVI. Il ressort de cette étude que la superficie des forêts est en hausse de 240 ha, malgré les feux de brousses. Elle est passée de 21,42% (610,42 ha) en 1988 à 29,85% (850,67 ha) en 2015. Les rôniers sont répartis au niveau plantule en agrégat, de caractère hétérogène. Celle des adultes présente une répartition aléatoire avec un caractère homogène. Les rôniers sont plus abondants avec des allures de réponses unimodales. Les températures et humidités de surface favorables à l’abondance des rôniers sont fonction de la formation de savane qui l’abrite. Cette analyse montre que les facteurs environnementaux contrôlent la répartition des rôniers. L’évaluation de la détection des rôniers au seuil de recherche de 10 mètres a permis d’obtenir une bonne précision en fonction du stade de développement. Elle est de plus de 90% chez les rôniers adultes et près de 50% chez les juvéniles.

Abstract: International audience; The chemical composition of 44 leaf oil samples of Laggera pterodonta (DC.) SCH.BIP. EX OLIV. (Asteraceae) from Côte d'Ivoire was investigated, using combination of chromatographic (GC-FID) and spectroscopic (GC/MS, 13 C-NMR) techniques. Two oil samples chosen according to their chromatographic profiles were submitted to column chromatography and all fractions of CC were analyzed by GC-FID, GC/MS and 13 C-NMR. In total, 83 components accounting for 96.5 to 99.4 % of the whole chemical composition were identified. Significant variations were observed within terpene classes: monoterpene hydrocarbons (0.4-22.7 %), oxygenated monoterpenes (32.9-54.9 %), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (18.6-38.3 %) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (3.5-38.4 %). Thus, the 44 compositions were subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Two groups were differentiated according to their composition. All the samples contained 2,5-dimethoxy-p-cymene, α-humulene and (E)-β-caryophyllene among the main components. Other components were present at appreciable contents and allowed differentiation of two groups: sabinene and germacrene D for Group I; 10-epi-γ-eudesmol and eudesm-7(11)-en-4α-ol for Group II. All the samples collected in Eastern Côte d'Ivoire constituted Group I, while samples collected in the Central area of the country constituted Group II.

In this mini-review, we provide a series of information for respectively their targets and its selectivity, results on preclinical trial, clinical phase I, II and III trials, and some perspectives. We also describe the batch and flow steps used for the synthesis of this cancer drug.

Abstract: Alterations in the gut microbiota composition and diversity seem to play a role in the development of chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), leading to gut barrier disruption and induction of proinflammatory immune responses. This opens the door for the use of novel health-promoting bacteria. We selected five Parabacteroides distasonis strains isolated from human adult and neonates gut microbiota. We evaluated in vitro their immunomodulation capacities and their ability to reinforce the gut barrier and characterized in vivo their protective effects in an acute murine model of colitis. The in vitro beneficial activities were highly strain dependent: two strains exhibited a potent anti-inflammatory potential and restored the gut barrier while a third strain reinstated the epithelial barrier. While their survival to in vitro gastric conditions was variable, the levels of P. distasonis DNA were higher in the stools of bacteria-treated animals. The strains that were positively scored in vitro displayed a strong ability to rescue mice from colitis. We further showed that two strains primed dendritic cells to induce regulatory T lymphocytes from na&iuml, ve CD4+ T cells. This study provides better insights on the functionality of commensal bacteria and crucial clues to design live biotherapeutics able to target inflammatory chronic diseases such as IBD.

Abstract: International audience; Although there is a growing interest in Fenton oxidation processes based on natural catalysts, the use of laterite soil to promote sequential adsorption/oxidation treatments of fluoroquinolone antibiotics has been scarcely investigated. In this work, the ability of an african laterite containing goethite and hematite to remove flumequine (FLU), used as a representative compound of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, was evaluated under dark and UVA irradiation. Batch experiments and liquid chromatography analyses showed that the presence of laterite can enhance FLU removal from heavily contaminated water through both sorption and oxidation reactions (up to 94% removal of 77 μmol L−1 of FLU and 72% of mineralization). The heterogeneous reaction rate is dominated by the rate of intrinsic surface chemical reactions including sorption and oxidation of FLU, and light-induced reduction of FeIII sites to produce FeII. Based on the probe and scavenging experiments, [rad]OH radicals were mainly involved in the heterogeneous oxidation reaction. The photo-assisted Fenton process showed a high efficiency of FLU removal even in the presence of a second fluoroquinolone antibiotic, norfloxacin (NOR), which can be co-found with FLU in affected environments. Determinations of kinetic rate constants and total organic carbon (TOC) for five sequential adsorption/oxidation cycles showed that laterite exhibited no deactivation of surface sites and an excellent catalytic stability. This cost-effective and environmentally friendly remediation technology may appear as a promising way for the removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from multi-contaminated waters. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract: Urban malaria is currently considered as an "emerging" public health concern. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the exposure of human population to Anopheles vectors bites and the effectiveness of malaria vectors control strategies in an African urban area, the city Bouaké. This exposure was assessed using an original indicator, an immune-epidemiological biomarker (IgG antibody specific to an An. gambiae salivary peptide: gSG6-P1) of human exposure to Anopheles vector bites, thus measuring the real human-vector contact. Two cross-sectional studies were carried out (rainy season, August 2014 and dry season, March 2015) and anti-gSG6-P1 IgG responses were measured by ELISA in children aged 6 months to 14 years of age. In rainy season, the level of specific IgG was higher than that observed in the dry season, but did not vary according to the districts. However, it varied according to the districts in the dry season indicating a great heterogeneity of malaria transmission risk between districts within the same city (P = 0.034). Surprisingly, the levels of specific IgG observed in the urban area of Bouaké during the two seasons were not different from those observed in surround rural areas (P = 0.118), suggesting similar exposure to malaria vectors between urban and rural areas. In addition, another study carried out in rainy season of 2016 (August) to children and adults, showed that the effectiveness of mosquito nets on human-vector contact differed according to the neighborhood (P < 0.0001) and the socio-professional category (P = 0.029). People aged between [16-25 years] and [26-49 years] were more exposed to Anopheles bites, therefore at the risk of malaria.All these results reveal a high exposure of urban populations to Anopheles vectors in the rainy season and a district-dependent transmission risk in the dry season, thus in the season of low exposure to malaria vectors. The use of this biomarker could guide vector control campaigns in urban areas where the risk of malaria is the highest and accurately target populations mostly exposed to vectors, for a successful vector control implementation., Le paludisme urbain est aujourd’hui considéré comme un problème de santé publique « émergent ». L’objectif principal de cette thèse a été d’évaluer l’exposition des populations humaines aux piqûres des anophèles vecteurs et l’efficacité des moyens de lutte anti-vectorielle en milieu urbain africain (Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire). Cette exposition populationnelle et individuelle a été évaluée en utilisant un indicateur original, le biomarqueur immuno-épidémiologique (anticorps IgG spécifique au peptide gSG6-P1 de la salive d’Anopheles) d’exposition de l’Homme aux piqûres des Anopheles. Cet outil sérologique a été précédemment validé comme un outil pertinent mesurant le contact réel Homme-vecteur. Deux études transversales et multidisciplinaires ont été menées (saison des pluies, août 2014 et saison sèche, mars 2015) et les réponses IgG anti-peptide ont été mesurées par ELISA chez les enfants de 6 mois à 14 ans. En saison des pluies, le niveau des IgG spécifiques était plus élevé que celui observé en saison sèche, mais ne variait pas selon le quartier. En revanche, celui-ci variait en fonction des quartiers en saison sèche et indiquait la grande hétérogénéité de risque de paludisme entre quartiers au sein d’une même ville (P = 0.034). De manière surprenante, les niveaux des IgG spécifiques observés en zone urbaine durant les deux saisons n’étaient pas différents de ceux observés dans la zone rurale située à proximité (P = 0.118), suggérant ainsi une exposition similaire aux vecteurs de paludisme dans les deux milieux. De plus, une autre étude réalisée chez les enfants et adultes (saison des pluies 2016) a montré que l’efficacité des moustiquaires sur le contact Homme-vecteur différait en fonction du quartier (P < 0.0001) et de la catégorie socio-professionnelle (P = 0.029). Les personnes d’âge compris entre [16-25 ans] et [26-49 ans] étaient les plus exposées aux piqûres des Anopheles, donc au risque de paludisme.Tous ces résultats révèlent une forte exposition des populations urbaines aux Anopheles vecteurs en saison des pluies et un risque quartier-dépendant de transmission en saison sèche, donc saison de plus faible exposition aux vecteurs. L’utilisation de ce biomarqueur pourrait orienter les campagnes de lutte anti-vectorielle vers les quartiers urbains les plus à risque de paludisme et cibler avec précision les populations les plus exposées aux vecteurs, pour un succès des méthodes de lutte anti-vectorielles engagées.

Abstract: Questions Perennial tussock grasses represent the principal fuel source for savanna fires; however, basic information about the impact of fire on their demography remains scarce. Do dominant perennial grass species differ in their demographic parameters? What is the overall impact of tussock circumference and fire regimes on grass demographic parameters? Do grass species differ in the sensitivity of their demographic parameters to fire regimes and tussock circumference? Location The study site is located in the savanna of the Lamto reserve, in the center of Ivory Coast (6 degrees 9 ' to 6 degrees 18 ' N, 5 degrees 15 ' to 4 degrees 57 ' E). Methods Data on the nine dominant species of tussock grasses were sampled over one year under four fire treatments (early fire, mid-season fire, late fire and no fire). We studied the impact of these fire treatments and tussock circumference on five demographic parameters: mortality, fragmentation (the division of a tussock into several smaller ones), growth, retrogression (the decrease in tussock size) and fecundity. Results All demographic parameters varied among species and across the fire regimes. Late fire had the largest negative effect on all parameters except fecundity. Schizachyrium platyphyllum was the most disadvantaged species by fire in terms of mortality, retrogression and growth, whilst Andropogon ascinodis was the most prone to fragmentation. Hyparrhenia smithiana and Sorghastrum bipennatum produced the most seeds and Brachiaria brachylopha produced the most new tussocks. The circumference of perennial grasses impacted all demographic parameters. Small individuals had the highest mortality and growth rates, while large individuals showed the highest fragmentation and retrogression rates, and produced the most seeds. Conclusions This study showed that perennial grass species differed in their sensitivity to fire treatments. Nevertheless, the mid-season fire could be advised to managers for the sustainable management of the Lamto savanna.

Abstract: Holarrhena floribunda est une plante utilisée dans le traitement traditionnel du diabète en Côte d’Ivoire. Afin de vérifier son innocuité, l’extrait d’acétate d’éthyle des feuilles à la dose de 1000 mg/kg de poids corporel a été administré quotidiennement par voie orale sur une période de 90 jours aux rats wistar du lot essai. Un lot satellite a été constitué afin d’apprécier la persistance ou la réversibilité d’éventuels effets qui apparaitraient après l’arrêt du traitement. Des prélèvements sanguins ont été effectués aux temps J0 (avant le début de l’expérimentation), J7, J14, J21, J28, J60, J90 et J120 (un mois après l’arrêt des gavages), afin de déterminer les effets de l’extrait sur les paramètres biochimiques sanguins. Au terme des 90 jours (pour les rats de l’étude principale) et 120 jours (pour les rats des lots satellites), une l’étude histologique a été réalisée sur le cœur, le foie et les reins. Ces différentes études ont montré d’une part que l’extrait d’acétate d’éthyle des feuilles de H. floribunda n’a pas modifié de manière significative les masses relatives des différents organes (cœur, foie et reins) et les taux sériques de l’acide urique, des bilirubines, des triglycérides, les activités enzymatiques de l’ALAT, LDH, et de l’indice d’athérogénicité des rats traités (dans les deux sexes) par rapport aux rats témoins aussi bien durant toute la période de traitement qu’un mois après l’arrêt de celui-ci. D’autre part, l’extrait d’acétate d’éthyle des feuilles de H. floribunda a provoqué des modifications significatives soit chez les rats mâles pour les paramètres tels que : le chlore, le sodium et la PAL ; soit chez les rats femelles pour la créatinine le calcium et l’ASAT soit dans les deux sexes pour la glycémie, le cholestérol LDL, le cholestérol HDL et le cholestérol Total ou par rapport au temps pour la CPK. Cependant, ces variations étaient modérées et les valeurs obtenues sont restées dans les limites de leur valeur standard. Par ailleurs, les coupes histologiques n’ont pas révélé de lésions au niveau des trois organes étudiés à savoir le cœur, le foie et les reins. En définitive, la dose de 1000 mg/kg de poids corporel de l’extrait d’acétate d’éthyle des feuilles de H.a floribunda a été bien tolérée par l’organisme des rats après une administration par gavage de 90 jours.; Holarrhena floribunda is a medicinal plant used in traditional treatment of diabetes in Côte d’Ivoire. In order toverify its safety, the ethyl acetate extract of its leaves at a dose of 1000 mg / kg of body weight was administered daily over a period of 90 days to wistar rats of the test groups. A satellite group was established to assess the persistence or reversibility of any effects that would appear after discontinuation of treatment. Blood samples were taken on (day 0) (D0) (before the start of the experiment), D7, D14, D21, D28, D60, D90 and D120 (one month after stopping the Treatment) to determine the effects of the extract on serum biochemical parameters. At the end of the 90 days (for the rats of the main study) and 120 days (for the rats of the satellite batches), a histological study was carried out on rats heart, liver and kidneys. These different studies have shown that the ethyl acetate extract from the leaves of H. floribunda did not significantly change the relative body weight of the liver, kidneys and heart. Serum levels of uric acid, bilirubins, albumin, triglycerides, enzymatic activities of ALT, CPK, LDH and of the atherogenicity index of treated rats (in both sexes) were not affected compared to the control rats both throughout the treatment period and one month after stopping treatment. However, administration of the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves of H. floribunda caused significant changes in male rats for parameters such as chlorine, sodium potassium and PAL. In the female rats, the levels of creatinine, calcium and AST activity have been punctually modified. Otherwise, serum concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and blood glucose levels showed slight changes in both sexes. However, these changes were moderate and the values obtained remained within their standard values. In addition, histological sections did not show any lesions in the heart, liver and kidneys. Ultimately, the 1000 mg / kg body weight of the ethyl acetate extract of H. floribunda leaves was well tolerated by the rat organism after 90-day oral administration.

Abstract: International audience; The investigation of the stem essential oil of Laggera pterodonta(DC.) Sch. Bip. ex Oliv. (Asteraceae) from C^ote d’Ivoire was carriedout, using a combination of chromatographic (GC-RI, CC, pc-GC)and spectroscopic (GC-MS, 13C NMR) techniques. This study led tothe identification of fifty constituents of which two new naturalcompounds 7b,11b-epoxy-eudesman-4a-ol and 7a,11a-epoxyeudesman-4a-ol. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2DNMR spectroscopy after pc-GC purifying. Finally, 98.9% of thewhole composition of the oil was identified with a high amountof 2,5-dimethoxy-p-cymene (78.9%). The other significant componentswere a-humulene (6.2%), (E)-b-caryophyllene (1.7%), thymylmethyl oxide (1.7%), a-phellandrene (1.5%), p-cymene (1.2%),(3aH,4bH,6aH,1aMe)-1,6-epoxy-3-hydroxycarvotanacetone angelicacid ester (1.1%) and 10-epi-c-eudesmol (1.0%).

Abstract: International audience; This theoretical chemical reactivity study was conducted using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, at computational level B3LYP/6-31G (d). It involved a series of six (06) 5-arylidene rhodanines and allowed to predict the chemical reactivity of these compounds. DFT global chemical reactivity descriptors (HOMO and LUMO energies, chemical hardness, softness, electronegativity) were examined to predict the relative stability and reactivity of rhodanin derivatives. Thus, the compound 6 which has an energy gap between the orbitals of ΔEgap = 3.004 eV is the most polarizable, the most reactive, the least stable, the best electron donor and the softest molecule. Calculation of the local indices of reactivity as well as dual descriptors revealed that the sulfur heteroatom of the Rhodanine ring is the privileged site of electrophilic attack in a state of sp3 hybridization and privileged site of nucleophilic attack in a state of sp2 hybridization.

Abstract: This study assesses the impact of four fire treatments applied yearly over 3 y, i.e. early fire, mid-season fire, late fire and no fire treatments, on the grass communities of Lamto savanna, Ivory Coast. We describe communities of perennial tussock grasses on three replicated 5 × 5-m or 10 × 5-m plots of each fire treatment. Tussock density did not vary with fire treatment. The relative abundance of grass species, the circumference of grass tussocks and the probability of having a tussock with a central die-back, varied with fire treatment. Mid-season fire had the highest proportion of tussocks with a central die-back while the late fire had the smallest tussocks. Tussock density, circumference, relative abundance and probability of having a central die-back varied with species.Andropogon canaliculatusandHyparrhenia diplandrawere the most abundant of the nine grass species. They had the largest tussocks and the highest proportion of tussock with a central die-back.Loudetia simplexwas the third most abundant species but was very rare in no fire plots. The distribution of tussock circumferences was right skewed and dominated by small tussocks. The proportion of the tussocks with a central die-back strongly increased with circumference, which could lead to tussock fragmentation. Taken together, this study suggests that fire regimes impact grass demography and that this impact depends on grass species and tussock size.

Abstract: International audience; Background: In some African cities, urban malaria is a threat to the health and welfare of city dwellers. To improve the control of the disease, it is critical to identify neighbourhoods where the risk of malaria transmission is the highest. This study aims to evaluate the heterogeneity of malaria transmission risk in one city (Bouaké) in a West African country (Côte d'Ivoire) that presents several levels of urbanization.Methods: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted in three neighbourhoods (Dar-es-Salam, Kennedy and N'gattakro) in Bouaké during both the rainy and dry seasons. Data on insecticide-treated net (ITN) use and blood samples were collected from children aged between 6 months and 15 years to determine the parasite density and the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum and the level of IgG against the Anopheles gSG6-P1 salivary peptide, used as the biomarker of Anopheles bite exposure.Results: The specific IgG levels to the gSG6-P1 salivary peptide in the rainy season were significantly higher compared to the dry season in all neighbourhoods studied (all p < 0.001). Interestingly, these specific IgG levels did not differ between neighbourhoods during the rainy season, whereas significant differences in IgG level were observed in the dry season (p = 0.034). ITN use could be a major factor of variation in the specific IgG level. Nevertheless, no difference in specific IgG levels to the gSG6-P1 salivary peptide was observed between children who declared "always" versus "never" sleeping under an ITN in each neighbourhood. In addition, the prevalence of P. falciparum in the whole population and immune responders was significantly different between neighbourhoods in each season (p < 0.0001).Conclusion: This study highlights the high risk of malaria exposure in African urban settings and the high heteroge-neity of child exposure to the Anopheles vector between neighbourhoods in the same city. The Anopheles gSG6-P1 salivary peptide could be a suitable biomarker to accurately and quantitatively assess the risk of malaria transmission in urban areas.

Abstract: International audience; A series of (5Z) 5-arylidene 2-thioxo-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives 7(a-l) bearing a [4-(3-aminopropyl)piperazin-1-yl]propyl side chain in N-3 position was prepared using a solution phase protocol assisted by microwave dielectric heating. These new compounds were synthesized in four steps with overall yields ranging from 12 to 33% via a "one-pot two-steps" protocol based on Holmberg reaction followed by a stereocontrolled Knoevenagel condensation. The rhodanine intermediate 4' issued from Holmberg reaction under microwave was also isolated and identified by spectroscopic methods of analysis. The twelve deprotected products 7(a-l) have been obtained with a Z-geometry about their exocyclic double bond. All N-Boc intermediates 6(a-l) and deprotected rhodanine derivatives 7(a-l) issued from trifluoroacetic acid treatment have been characterized by 1H, 13C and HRMS.

Abstract: In recent decades, palm oil occupying a prominent place in the diet of African populations, is the center of controversy, as to its atherogenicity due to its high content of saturated fatty acids (50%). The aim of this study was to evaluate the lipid, lipoprotein and vitamin status of the palm oil-consuming inhabitants of the village of Grand-Alépé. This study was conducted in 120 subjects selected according to their palm oil consumption, following a food survey carried out beforehand among 2240 inhabitants of grand-Alépé, aged at least 18 years. Serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL cholesterol and lipoprotein (a) concentrations were measured by standard enzymatic methods after a blood sample was taken from these 120 subjects (65 consumers and 55 controls) that aged between 18 and 30 years old. The vitamin analyzes carried out by a HPLC, concerned 52 samples randomly chosen among the 120 subjects. Several statistical tests were used with a significance threshold of less than 5%. The dietary survey had shown that palm oil was consumed by 99.33% of the subjects surveyed with an average amount of 76.01 g / day, or 684.09 kcal / day. Serum total cholesterol varied insignificantly in both groups of subjects, as did triglycerides and HDL-C. In addition, 58.46% of palm oil consumers had hypoLDLemia. The serum lipoprotein (a) concentration was not significantly elevated (p> 0.05) in consumers compared with controls : 33.85% versus 29.09%, p = 0.55. α-Tocopherol was higher in the palm oil-consuming subjects compared to controls : 10.569 ± 0.35 mg / L versus 4.849 ± 0.525 mg / L, p = 0.0001. The mean serum concentration of β-carotene was elevated in both the consumer and control subjects, but without any significant difference : 3,413 ± 0,452 mg / L versus 2,70 ± 0,26 mg / L, p = 0,375. Palm oil did not seem to alter the BMI, the lipid, lipoprotein and antioxidant vitamin status of the consumers. On the contrary, this consumption revealed a decrease in the cholesterol level in these subjects.; Dans ces dernières décennies, l’huile de palme occupant une place de choix dans l’alimentation des populations africaines, est le centre de polémiques, quant à son athérogénicité du fait de sa forte teneur en acides gras saturés (50%). Les concentrations sériques des triglycérides, du cholestérol total, des Cholestérols HDL, LDL et la lipoprotéine (a) ont été mesurées par les méthodes enzymatiques classiques après un prélèvement sanguin effectué chez ces 120 sujets (65 consommateurs et 55 témoins) d’intervalle d’âge compris entre 18 et 30 ans. Les analyses vitaminiques effectuées grâce à un HPLC, ont concerné 52 échantillons choisis de manière aléatoire parmi les 120 sujets. Plusieurs tests statistiques ont été utilisés avec un seuil de significativité inférieur à 5%. L’enquête alimentaire avait montré que l’huile de palme était consommée par 99,33 % des sujets enquêtés avec une quantité moyenne de 76,01 g/jour, soit 684,09 kcal/jour. Le Cholestérol total sérique variait de manière non significative dans les deux groupes de sujets, de même que les triglycérides et le HDL-C. De plus, 58,46 % des consommateurs d’huile de palme avait une hypoLDLémie. Abstract: Arbovirus infections, mainly transmitted byAedesmosquito, are emerging in Africa. Efficient vector control requires an understanding of ecological factors which could impact on the risk of transmission, such as environmental changes linked to agricultural practices. The present study aims to assess the level of human exposure toAedesmosquito bites in different agroecosystem area, using an immunological tool which quantifies human IgG antibody response to oneAe. aegyptisalivary peptide. Specific IgG responses were assessed during dry and rainy seasons, in children living in different villages in Côte d’Ivoire: N’Zikro (rubber and oil palm exploitations), Ehania-V5 (oil palm), and Ayébo (without intensive agricultural activities). In the dry season, specific IgG levels were significantly lower in Ayébo compared to Ehania-V5 and N’Zikro and, interestingly, were similarly high in both villages with cultivations. In the rainy season, no difference of specific IgG was observed between villages. Specific IgG responses remained therefore high during both seasons in villages associated with intensive agricultural. The rubber and oil palm cultivations could maintain a high level of human exposure toAedesmosquito bites during both dry and rainy seasons. These agricultural activities could represent a permanent risk factor of the transmission of arboviruses.

Abstract: The composition of Enantia polycarpa Engl. & Diels leaf essential oil has been investigated for the first time using a combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The compositions of 52 leaf essential oil samples have been subjected to statistical analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Four groups were differentiated, of which the compositions were dominated by β-elemene and germacrene B (Group III, 22/52 samples); germacrene D (Group I, 16/52 samples); β-cubebene (Group IV, 8/52 samples) and by germacrene B and germacrene D (Group II, 6/52 samples). A special attention was brought to the quantification of the thermolabile components, germacrene A, germacrene B and germacrene C, as well as that of their rearranged compounds, β-elemene, γ-elemene and δ-elemene. 13 C-NMR data of β-cubebene have been provided.

Abstract: International audience; Urban malaria is an underestimated serious health concern in African countries. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of malaria transmission in an urban area by evaluating the level of human exposure to Anopheles bites using an Anopheles salivary biomarker (gambiae Salivary Gland Protein-6 peptide 1 [gSG6-P1] peptide). Two multidisciplinary cross-sectional studies were undertaken in five sites of Bouaké city (three urban districts and two surrounding villages, used as control; Côte d’Ivoire) during the rainy season and the dry season. Blood samples were obtained from children 6 months to 14 years of age for immunological tests. The level of anti-gSG6-P1 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies was significantly higher in the rainy season than the dry season in both urban and rural sites (P < 0.0001). Interestingly, children with the highest anti-gSG6-P1 IgG responses in the rainy season were infected by Plasmodium falciparum. Surprisingly, no difference of anti-gSG6-P1 IgG level was observed between urban and rural areas, for either season. The current data suggest that children in the urban city of Bouaké could be as highly exposed to Anopheles bites as children living in surrounding villages. The immunological biomarker of human exposure to Anopheles bites may be used to accurately assess the potential risk of malaria transmission in African urban settings.

Abstract: International audience; The chemical composition of 35 leaf oil samples from Polyalthia longifolia (Sonnerat) Thwait., growingin five districts in Abidjan and its suburbs, has been investigated by GC(FID) in combination withretention indices, GC–MS and 13C-NMR. In total, 30 individual components have been identified,mostly sesquiterpenes. The contents of the main components varied substantially from sample tosample: (E)-β-caryophyllene (18.9–31.4%), α-zingiberene (6.1–22.1%), allo-aromadendrene (12.4–17.3%) and α-humulene (6.4–11.0%). However, PCA was unable to differentiate groups within the35 compositions. The chemical composition of Ivorian P. longifolia leaf oils may be summarizedas follow: (E)-β-caryophyllene (M = 25.3%; SD = 1.2), allo-aromadendrene (M = 15.2%; SD = 0.5),α-zingiberene (M = 13.6%; SD = 3.6) and α-humulene (M = 8.4%; SD = 0.2).

Abstract: International audience; Although several emerging contaminants (e.g. fluoro(quinolones) (FQs)) have been simultaneously detected in environmental systems, there is very limited information on their elimination from contaminated waters in multi-component systems. In this study, removal of three FQs including flumequine (FLU), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and norfloxacin (NOR) were investigated in single and mixture systems, using natural laterite soil and persulfate (PS) under UVA irradiation. Both sorption and oxidation reactions contribute to the removal of FQs from aqueous phase, whereas quenching experiments showed that SO4[rad]− is mainly responsible for the FQs oxidation. The kinetic rate constants can be ranked as follows: CIP andgt; NOR andgt; FLU, regardless of whether the compound was alone or in mixture. The higher degradation rate constant of CIP relative to those of NOR and FLU could be explained by the high reactivity of SO4[rad]− radical with cyclopropane-ring containing compounds. Fall in oxidation performance was observed in synthetic wastewater, probably due to sulfate radical scavenging by wastewater components. However, degradation rate constants of CIP in wastewater remains unchanged in mixture systems as compared to single ones. This environmentally friendly remediation technology may appear as a promising way for the removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from multi-contaminated waters.

Abstract: International audience; Software Defined Network (SDN) is a concept based on a decoupling between the control plane and the data plane of a network. Thus, the network becomes programmable and can be adapted to the application requirements. The study that is discussed in this paper looks at load planning and load balancing in a SDN architecture where controllers are distributed. To do this, a model and theoretical methods for performance evaluation -with appropriate software tools to predict and control the quality of service offered to users- are exposed. This paper discribed also a distributed network architecture with SDN controllers and a module based on an adaptive load balancing algorithm that is fault tolerant and follows controller load. The experiments show a significant gain in efficiency of our solution.

Abstract: International audience; The feeding preferences of termites in a Guinean savanna (Lamto, Côte d'Ivoire) were studied in the field to better understand the incidence of termite damages observed on adult trees, which, on interaction with fire, affect the dynamics of the tree community. Two separate multiple-choice test experiments were conducted on the six dominant tree species, aiming at determining preferences for the species and for wood conditions naturally encountered and likely to affect termite consumption behaviour. The preferences of termites were determined by their occurrence on standard-sized wood pieces and their behaviour during the first attack. Two fungus-growing termites, Ancis-trotermes and Microtermes were frequently encountered on wood pieces, whereas wood feeders were absent. The two genera have different preferences, and they do not compete for the same food. Wood density and water content did not explain termite preference. Holes in the bark seem to facilitate termite entry into pieces of wood, whereas the action of fire on wood apparently makes it less attractive to termites. In the field, the decision by termites to forage on a given tree species seems to be more driven by habitat and accessibility differences than real food quality differences.

Abstract: International audience; A series of 16 new ethyl [Formula: see text]-amino benzimidazole acrylate derivatives 12(a-p) with a (2E)-s-cis/trans conformation and bearing two points of diversity was designed and synthesized by using a multi-step strategy (reductive amination, deprotection in acidic media and transamination) in moderate to good yields from ethyl 3-dimethylamino-2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)acrylate (5) and monosubstituted N-Boc diamines (7a,7b) as starting building blocks. Products 12 were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic potential against six selected human cell lines (Huh7-D12, Caco2, MDA-MB231, HCT116, PC3 and NCI-H727). Compounds 12a, 12e and 12l exhibited selective and micromolar antitumor activities against Huh7-D12 and Caco2 cell lines.

Abstract: The general trend in sorghum beer production is now the use of starter culture to alleviate the problems of variations in organoleptic quality and microbiological stability. In this study, we aimed to select strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida tropicalis to use as starter culture based on their ability to face ethanol toxicity. All the strains exhibited a relatively high resistance up to 5% ethanol. At 7.5% ethanol, S. cerevisiae F12-7 and C. tropicalis C0-7 were the most resistant strains with viability rate of 80-97% after 24 h of incubation. These two strains showed also the highest unsaturated/saturated fatty acids ratios. Values increased from 68.86% to 80.30% and from 72.97 to 85.96% respectively for S. cerevisiae F12-7 and C. tropicalis C0-7 cultivated under 0% and 7.5% ethanol. The cellular neutral lipid composition differed markedly according to the yeast strains. With proportion of 36.73% for S. cerevisiae F12-7 and 78.75% for C. tropicalis C0-7, ergosterol was the most abundant neutral lipid founded in the strains membranes. In addition, phosphatidylethanolamine contents decreased with the increase of ethanol concentration in the culture medium on contrary to phosphatidylcholine contents. These two strains were so suggested as starter cultures for sorghum beer production.

Abstract: Ce travail est issu de la collaboration entre le Laboratoire de Chimie Bio-Organique et de Substances Naturelles (LCBOSN) de l’Université Nangui Abrogoua et l’équipe "Chimie et Biomasse" de l’Unité Mixte de Recherches de l’Université de Corse associée au CNRS (UMR 6134) "Sciences pour l’environnement" (SPE). Son objectif est une contribution à la valorisation des plantes aromatiques de Côte d’ivoire. Il a consisté à la caractérisation de quatre plantes de Côte d’Ivoire à travers la composition chimique de leurs huiles essentielles. Différentes techniques chromatographiques et spectroscopiques ont été mises en oeuvre, en particulier la RMN 13C des mélanges, méthode mise au point et développée par l’équipe « Chimie et Biomasse ».Les potentialités de cette méthode ont permis l’identification et la quantification d’un composé thermosensible majoritaire, le germacrène A dans l’huile essentielle de feuilles d’Artabotrys insignis.Par ailleurs, le suivi de l’évolution de la composition chimique des HE de feuilles et d’écorces de tige d’Artabotrys jollyanus sur une période de 12 mois a révélé une homogénéité qualitative de ces HE qui sont dominées par des sesquiterpènes (plus de 80% de la composition chimique). Ces HE ont montré un faible pouvoir antioxydant vis-à-vis du DPPH.Ensuite, la caractérisation des HE extraites de différents organes de Beilschmiedia mannii a été réalisée. L’HE d’écorce de racines s’est révélée riche en sesquiterpènes avec comme composés majoritaires, le (E)-nérolidol, le cis-α-bergamotène et le β-barbatène. L’étude de 8 échantillons d’HE d’écorces de tronc a montré divers profils chromatographiques dominés soit des monoterpènes (δ-3-carène, myrcène) soit des sesquiterpènes ((E)-nérolidol, cis-α-bergamotène et β-bisabolène). Une grande variabilité chimique qualitative et quantitative de l’HE de feuilles a été prouvée au moyen de l’ACP et de la CHA réalisées sur 45 échantillons. Sept groupes de composition chimique ont été ainsi mis en évidence. Les composés qui les caractérisent sont : le δ-3-carène, l’α-phellandrène et le myrcène ; le (E)-β-ocimène ; le β-bisabolène ; le (E)-β-caryophyllène et α-humulène ; l’α-copaène ; l’α-pinène ; le myrcène.Enfin, nous avons menés des investigations sur les HE extraites d’écorce de racine, d’écorce de tronc et de feuilles de Dacryodes klaineana. Des similitudes ont été observées dans la composition chimique des HE d’écorces de racine et de tronc. Ces HE, riches en composés monoterpéniques, sont dominés par l’α- et/ou le β-pinène. L’étude statistique sur un ensemble de 51 échantillons d’HE d’écorces de troncs montre trois groupes homogènes de composition chimique. Le premier groupe est dominé par l’α-pinène, le second par le couple α-/β-pinène et le troisième groupe est caractérisé par l’association α-pinène/β-pinène/limonène. L’HE de feuilles, par contre, s’est montrée extrêmement variable dans sa composition chimique. L’étude statistique menée sur 30 échantillons de cette HE a mis en évidence une grande variabilité à la fois quantitative et qualitative. Il a été possible de dégager trois groupes sur la base des composés majoritaires qui sont soit des monoterpènes oléfiniques : terpinolène, myrcène, (Z) et (E)-β-ocimènes, soit des sesquiterpènes oléfiniques : (E)-β-caryophyllène, trans-α-bergamotène, isodaucène et α-humulène. Ces groupes sont néanmoins difficilement caractérisables par un ou plusieurs composés chimiques. Cette dernière étude souligne la difficulté à caractériser cette HE et la nécessité d’un échantillonnage plus large avant de pouvoir envisager la valorisation.; This work is the result of the collaboration between the Laboratory of Bio-Organic Chemistry and Natural Substances (LCBOSN) of the University Nangui Abrogoua and the team "Chemistry and Biomass" of the Joint Research Unit of the University of Corsica associated with the CNRS (UMR 6134) "Sciences for the environment" (SPE). Its objective was a contribution to the valorization of the aromatic plants from Côte d’Ivoire. It consisted of the characterization of four ivorian plants through the chemical composition of their essential oils. For this purpose, various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques have been implemented, in particular the 13C NMR of the mixtures, a method elaborated and developed by the team "Chemistry and Biomass".The potentialities of this method allowed the identification and quantification of a major thermosensitive compound, germacrene A in the essential oil of leaves of Artabotrys insignis.Moreover, monitoring the evolution of the chemical composition of the EOs of Artabotrys jollyanus leaves and stem bark over a 12-month period revealed a qualitative homogeneity of these EOs which were dominated by sesquiterpenes (more than 80% of the chemical composition). These EOs showed low antioxidant potency towards DPPH.Then, the characterization of the EOs extracted from different organs of Beilschmiedia mannii was carried out. The EO of root bark was rich in sesquiterpenes with (E)-nerolidol, cis-α-bergamotene and β-barbatene as major components. The study of 8 samples of EO from trunk bark showed various chromatographic profiles dominated by either monoterpenes (δ-3-carene, myrcene) or sesquiterpenes ((E)-nerolidol, cis-α-bergamotene and β-bisabolene). By the means of statistical analysis (PCA and hierarchical clustering), the leaves EOs showed a high qualitative and quantitative chemical variability. Seven groups of chemical composition were thus highlighted. The specific compounds of these different groups were: δ-3-carene, α-phellandrene and myrcene; (E)-β-ocimene; β-bisabolene; (E)-β-caryophyllene and α-humulene; α-copaene; α-pinene; myrcene.Finally, we investigated the EOs extracted from root bark, trunk bark and leaves of Dacryodes klaineana. We observed similarities in the chemical composition of the EOs of root and trunk bark. These EOs, rich in monoterpenic compounds, were dominated by α- and/or β-pinene. The statistical survey, led on 51 trunk barks EO samples showed three homogeneous groups of chemical composition. The first group was dominated by α-pinene, the second by α- and β-pinene and the third group was characterized by the association α-pinene/β-pinene/limonene. On the other hand, the leaves EO has been extremely variable in its chemical composition. The statistical study carried out on 30 samples of this EO showed a great quantitative and qualitative variability. It has been possible to highlight three groups on the basis of the major components which were either olefinic monoterpenes: terpinolene, myrcene, (Z) and (E)-β-ocimenes, or olefinic sesquiterpenes: (E)-β-caryophyllene, trans-α-bergamotene, isodaucene and α-humulene. Nevertheless, these groups were so difficult to characterize by the means of one or more chemical compounds. This final study underlined the difficulty of characterizing this EO and the need for a wider sampling before considering the valorization.

Abstract: International audience; The composition of four samples of essential oil isolated from the leaves of individual Monodora crispata trees growing wild in an Ivorian forest(Adiopodoumé) were investigated by a combination of chromatographic (GC(RI)) and spectrometric (GC-MS, 13C NMR) techniques. In total, fifty-sevencompounds accounting for 92.3-98.7% of the whole composition were identified. These oils were characterized by the preeminence of sesquiterpenehydrocarbons and the content of the main components varied substantially from sample to sample. Two samples were largely dominated by germacrene D(67.3% and 76.3%, respectively), a third sample was represented by germacrene D (28.3%), germacrene C (14.3%), -elemene (12.1%) and -elemene (9.3%)and the fourth sample was characterized by 3-dimethylallylindole (15.1%), germacrene D (12.0%) and cyperene (7.8%). 13C NMR spectroscopy wasparticularly efficient for the identification of heat-sensitive compounds

Abstract: One oil sample isolated from leaves of Artabotrys jollyanus Pierre, Annonaceae, from Côte d’Ivoire has been analyzed by GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C NMR. In total, thirty-seven compounds accounting for 96.9% of the relative composition have been identified. The composition of the essential oil was dominated by trans-calamenene (15.7%), α-copaene (14.8%), α-cubebene (10.4%), cadina-3,5-diene (10.3%), (E)-β-caryophyllene (6.3%) and cadina-1,4-diene (6.1%). 13C NMR spectroscopy was very useful in the identification of trans-calamenene, 7-hydroxycalamenene, cadina-3,5-diene and cadina-1,4-diene. Moreover, monitoring the evolution of the leaf essential oil composition and the yield on a 12-month period (one sample per month) was achieved. The twelve essential oil samples exhibited a chemical homogeneity but the yield varied from sample to sample (0.26–0.60%). Abstract: The aim of this work was to study the effect of tropical green forage on rabbit growth performance and apparent digestibility. Thirty rabbits weaned at 35 d of age were individually caged and allotted to 2 dietary treatments. From 35 to 90 d of age, the control group C was fed ad libitum with commercial pelleted diet C only, while the test group was fed the C diet and forage Pueraria phaseoloides (Pp) ad libitum. Individual water and feed intake, body weight gain, nutrient apparent digestibility, red and white blood cells were studied. Mean housing temperature was 27.7°C. Water intake (35-90 d) did not differ between the 2 groups (mean=128 mL/d), whereas feed intake (35-90 d) was twice as high, with Pp (114 vs. 56 g; P=0.02). Forage intake doubled every 2 wk, averaging 50% of the total intake from 35 to 90 d of age. The growth rate was higher (+30%) in the Pp group after weaning (35-49 d) but did not differ between groups thereafter. The feed conversion was higher for the Pp group after weaning only (+ 87%; P12 cells/L). However, the white blood cell count was higher in Pp than in C group (7.4×109 vs. 3.9×109 cells/L; PP. phaseoloides may be used as a complement to a balanced pelleted feed, but further studies with a large number of rabbits are necessary to analyse the potential impact on health status.

Abstract: International audience; Herein, we report on the 5-step synthesis of new 3-[4-(arylalkoxy)phenylethyl]-2-thioxo-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones without 5-arylidene fragments starting from tyramine The construction involved protection with Boc(2)O, regioselective O-alkylation, deprotection with 6 M HCl, neutralization, and finally reaction of bis(carboxymethyl) trithiocarbonate under microwave irradiation. The intermediates and the N-substituted rhodanine have been also evaluated for their in vitro inhibition of cell proliferation (Huh7, Caco 2, MDA-MB231, HCT 116, PC3, NCI-H727, HaCat). Two compounds have shown a selective potent activity against HCT116 cell line.

Abstract: The estimation of glycoalkaloids in the flesh of different types of decayed potatoes was evaluated. The results showed that turned green and also sprouting or rotting potato flesh contain high amounts of toxic solanine and chaconine, exceeding by 2-5-fold the recommended limit, and ranging from 2578 +/- 86 mg/kg to 5063 +/- 230 mg/kg of dry weight potato flesh. For safety consideration, these decayed potatoes should be systematically set aside. To avoid a net economic loss and encourage the removal of this hazardous food, a recycling process was investigated to generate added-value compounds from the toxic glycoalkaloids. A simple chemo-enzymatic protocol comprising a partial acidic hydrolysis followed by an enzymatic treatment with the beta-glycosidase from Periplaneta americana allowed the efficient conversion of alpha-chaconine to solanidine.

Abstract: The forest-savanna ecotone may be very sharp in fire-prone areas. Fire and competition for light play key roles in its maintenance, as forest and savanna tree seedlings are quickly excluded from the other ecosystem. We hypothesized a tradeoff between seedling traits linked to fire resistance and to competition for light to explain these exclusions. We compared growth- and survival-related traits of two savanna and two forest species in response to shading and fire in a field experiment. To interpret the results, we decomposed our broad hypothesis into elementary tradeoffs linked to three constraints, biomass allocation, plant architecture, and shade tolerance, that characterize both savanna and adjacent forest ecosystems. All seedlings reached similar biomasses, but forest seedlings grew taller. Savanna seedlings better survived fire after topkill and required ten times less biomass than forest seedlings to survive. Finally, only savanna seedlings responded to shading. Although results were consistent with the classification of our species as mostly adapted to shade tolerance, competition for light in the open, and fire tolerance, they raised new questions: how could savanna seedlings survive better with a 10-times lower biomass than forest seedlings? Is their shade intolerance sufficient to exclude them from forest understory?

Abstract: Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks are widely deployed today. Multimedia applications, IPTV (i.e. television on Internet network), video conferencing, which have multiple end users, are very greedy in terms of bandwidth. The concept of multicast was introduced in IP networks to optimize the use of network resources because of such applications. This concept was subsequently extended to WDM optical networks. These networks are frequently disrupted by events such as overloads, failures, adding or deleting of network resources by maintenance. To address these disturbing phenomena, network operators compute a new topology (a new routing) depending on network state. Then the initial routing is reconfigured to migrate to the new routing. Since some applications, such as IPTV, do not tolerate interruption of the network connections, the reconfiguration must be done without connection interruption. In addition, it must be quick to respond effectively to the triggering event. Finally, it must reduce the cost of network resources used.The problem studied in this thesis is the fast reconfiguration of multicast routing in WDM optical networks. This reconfiguration must be done without connection interruption, while reducing the process duration and the network resources used.The work did during this thesis is to propose different approaches to solve this problem. We prove that there is no algorithm which can reconfigure any initial tree into any final tree using only one wavelength and without connection interruption. We propose algorithms which use additional wavelengths. In a first approach, we proposed a branch-based reconfiguration algorithms. In a second approach, we proposed a sub-tree-based reconfiguration algorithm. The performances of these algorithms were evaluated on different network topologies commonly used in this area of research.; Les réseaux optiques à multiplexage en longueur d’onde ou réseaux optiques WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) sont largement déployés aujourd’hui. Les applications multimédias, la Télévision sur IP (Internet Protocol), les visioconférences, destinées à plusieurs utilisateurs sont très gourmandes en termes de bande passante. Le concept de multicast a été introduit dans les réseaux IP pour optimiser l’utilisation des ressources des réseaux pour de telles applications. Ce concept a été étendu aux réseaux optiques WDM. Ces réseaux sont fréquemment perturbés par des phénomènes tels que les surcharges, les pannes, l’ajout ou la suppression des ressources de réseau par des opérations de maintenance. Pour faire face à ces phénomènes perturbateurs, les opérateurs de réseau calculent une nouvelle topologie (un nouveau routage) en fonction de l’état du réseau. Ensuite le routage initial est reconfiguré pour migrer vers la nouvelle topologie. Certaines applications telles que la Télévision sur IP ne tolérant pas les interruptions de connexion, la migration doit se faire sans interruption de flux. De plus, elle doit être rapide pour faire face efficacement à l’évènement l’ayant déclenché. Enfin, elle doit réduire le coût des ressources réseau utilisées.Le problème étudié dans cette thèse est la reconfiguration rapide du routage multicast dans les réseaux optiques WDM. Cette reconfiguration doit se faire sans interruption de flux, tout en réduisant la durée du processus et les ressources du réseau utilisées.Les travaux réalisés durant cette thèse ont consisté à proposer différentes approches de résolution de ce problème. Nous avons prouvé qu’il n’existe pas d’algorithme pouvant reconfigurer tout arbre optique initial en tout arbre optique final en utilisant une seule longueur d’onde et sans interruption de flux. Nous avons proposé donc des algorithmes qui utilisent des longueurs d’onde additionnelles. Dans une première approche, nous avons proposé des algorithmes de reconfiguration par branche. Dans une seconde approche, nous avons proposé un algorithme de reconfiguration par sous-arbre. Les performances de ces algorithmes ont été évaluées dans différentes topologies couramment utilisées dans ce domaine de recherche.

Abstract: National audience; Les ressources de calcul sont généralement accédées au travers d'un gestionnaire de ressources dont l'objectif principal est de terminer au plus tôt les tâches qui lui sont soumises tout en garantissant une utilisation maximale des ressources et une bonne équité entre utilisateurs. Certains utilisateurs peuvent néanmoins ne pas avoir besoin que leurs tâches nissent au plus tôt mais seulement avant une certaine deadline. Dans cet article, nous considérons la prise en compte du caractère non-prioritaire de telles tâches dans la détermination de l'ordonnancement. Nous proposons un algorithme de faible complexité capable de tirer prot de ce degré de liberté supplémentaire. Puis nous évaluons par simulation l'impact de cet algorithme sur l'ordonnancement produit et la qualité de service rendue aux utilisateurs.
