Abstract: Trees play a key role in the structure and function of many ecosystems worldwide. In the Mediterranean Basin, forests cover approximately 22% of the total land area hosting a large number of endemics (46 species). Despite its particularities and vulnerability, the biodiversity of Mediterranean trees is not well known at the taxonomic, spatial, functional, and genetic levels required for conservation applications. The WOODIV database fills this gap by providing reliable occurrences, four functional traits (plant height, seed mass, wood density, and specific leaf area), and sequences from three DNA-regions (rbcL, matK, and trnH-psbA), together with modelled occurrences and a phylogeny for all 210 Euro-Mediterranean tree species. We compiled, homogenized, and verified occurrence data from sparse datasets and collated them on an INSPIRE-compliant 10 × 10 km grid. We also gathered functional trait and genetic data, filling existing gaps where possible. Abstract: Aim: The Mediterranean Basin is a major hotspot of plant biodiversity, including forest trees. Over the past centuries, Mediterranean forests have been fragmented and over-exploited, to which the threats of climate change are now added. Our aim is to better understand patterns and processes of tree biodiversity in the Mediterranean and to provide indicators complementing the traditional approaches to biodiversity conservation based on species counts and occurrences, using georeferenced phylogenetic diversity and endemism analyses in a spatial ecological context. Location: Mediterranean Europe. Methods: Using a dated phylogeny of the 64 Euro-Mediterranean tree genera, we calculated phylogenetic diversity for all 50 × 50 km2 grid cells spanning Mediterranean Europe (n = 643) and compared values with those obtained for genus-level taxonomic diversity. Then, we tested the relative influence of geography, past and present climate, and soil on tree diversity (phylogenetic or taxonomic) and its geographical turnover. Geographical patterns of phylogenetic endemism were inferred using the Categorical Analyses of Neo- and Paleo-Endemism (CANAPE) methodology. Results: We showed that phylogenetic and taxonomic diversity within and among cells are correlated and influenced by soil parameters as well as current, Holocene and Late Glacial Maximum climate. Southern Spain, Cyprus and some Aegean islands contained areas of disproportionately high phylogenetic diversity and a concentration of phylogenetic paleo-endemics, while phylogenetic neo-endemism was high in eastern Sicily. Mixed phylogenetic endemism regions were detected in southern Spain and Portugal, in the Balkans and in Crete. Main conclusions: Our phylogenetic approach provides relevant indicators for better protecting forests of the Mediterranean, encompassing past and present evolutionary processes and factors. We consider areas that show a concentration of evolutionary history manifested by high phylogenetic endemism as high priority targets for the conservation of the European tree flora. Abstract: International audience; Cyclic dinuclear molybdenum(vi) complexes [MoO2(L1–3)]2 (1, 2-α, 2-β and 3) were synthesized through the use of coordination-driven self-assembly of a MoO22+ core and 4-aminobenzoylhydrazone ligands (salicylaldehyde (H2L1), 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde (H2L2) or 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde 4-aminobenzoylhydrazone (H2L3)). Their X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that these types of ligands could serve as organic linkers for cis-octahedral complexes containing a MoO22+ core. Mononuclear complexes [MoO2(L1–3)(MeOH)] (1a–3a) and [MoO2(L1–3)(EtOH)] (1b, 2b-α, 2b-β and 3b) were also obtained. In the presence of strong donors, such as dmf, ligand substitution occurred and the structures of 1–3 changed into [MoO2(L1)(dmf)] (1c), [MoO2(L2)(dmf)] (2c) and [MoO2(L3)(H2O)]·dmf (3c·dmf), respectively. The dioxidomolybdenum(vi) complexes were tested for catalytic epoxidation of cyclooctene under eco-friendly reaction conditions by using aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant without the addition of an organic solvent. The present study showed much better activity of the dinuclear catalysts than the mononuclear ones due to the weak donor properties of the amino group and high geometric constraints occurring in such small sized self-assembled systems as confirmed by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract: International audience; The focus of this work was on the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of Mo(vi) complexes with hemilabile polydentate ligands that show a high tendency to form discrete small-sized self-assembled structures. A series of mononuclear, [MoO2(L1 or 3)(MeOH)] (1a and 3a) and [MoO2(L1)(EtOH)] (1b), and dinuclear, [MoO2(L1–3)]2 (1–3), complexes was synthesised by using 2-aminobenzoylhydrazone ligands derived from salicylaldehyde (H2L1), 3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H2L2) and 4-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H2L3). Different reaction conditions led to the formation of several crystalline forms of the dinuclear cyclic species [MoO2(L1 or 3)]2 (1-α, 1-β, 1-γ, 1·CH3CN, 3-α, 3-β and 3·2CH3CN), a feature which is observed for the first time in the case of the metallosupramolecular compounds incorporating cis-MoO22+ subunits. These complexes were tested as catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation under eco-friendly reaction conditions by using aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant without the addition of an organic solvent. The use of the hemilabile ligands provided the opportunity to employ relatively stable coordinatively saturated dinuclear Mo(vi) complexes, which in turn offered access to highly reactive pentacoordinated species in the presence of olefins. Lastly, the hemilabile ligand induced catalytic enhancement was addressed by using density functional theory calculations.

Abstract: International audience; The mononuclear dioxotungsten(VI) complexes [WO2(L-3OMe)(D)] (1a and 1b), [WO2(L-4OMe)(D)] (2a and 2b) and [WO2(L-H)(D)] (3a and 3b) (D = EtOH (1a-3a) or MeOH (1b-3b); L-3OMe = 3-methoxy-2-oxybenzaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazonato, L-4OMe = 4-methoxy-2-oxybenzaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazonato, L-H = 2-oxybenzaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazonato) were synthesized by the reaction of [WO2(acac)(2)]center dot 0.5C(6)H(5)Me with the respective isoniazid-related hydrazone. The compounds were characterized by microanalysis, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction method. The crystal and molecular structures of 1a, 1b, 3a and [WO2(acac)(2)]center dot 0.5C(6)H(5)Me were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1a, 1b, 3a are mononuclear and form hydrogen bonded centrosymmetric dimers. In all three complexes, the dimers are also held together by pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions between aromatic rings. The catalytic performances (activity and selectivity) of 1a-3a and 1b-3b towards alkene epoxidation by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) were investigated under different conditions.

Abstract: International audience; A series of dinuclear and mononuclear oxovanadium(V) complexes containing tridentate Schiff base ligands derived from pyridoxal and appropriate thiosemicarbazide or hydrazide are reported. The compounds were characterised by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of the dioxido-vanadium(V) complex [VO2(HL5)]center dot MeOH center dot H2O (H2L5 = pyridoxal benzhydrazido ligand), determined by X-ray crystallography, reveals an unexpected distorted trigonal bipyramidal arrangement of the VO2 moiety. A DFT study of this molecule and of the related [VO2(H2L5)] complex of V-IV reveals a moderate effect of the oxidation state change on the bond distances and angles, pointing to solvation as the cause of the structural distortion. All complexes were tested as (pre) catalysts for olefin epoxidation by aqueous tert-butylhydroxyperoxide (TBHP) under solvent-free conditions. Low vanadium loadings (0.05% vs. olefin) resulted in good cyclooctene conversions and TOFs. The lifetime of one catalyst was explored through repeated runs with recovery/recycling. DFT calculations have also addressed the olefin epoxidation mechanism, which reveals the possible direct O atom transfer from the activated tert-butoxido (tBuOO(-)) ligand, without the need to generate a peroxido (022) ligand.

Abstract: Recent studies using convection-permitting (CP) climate simulations have demonstrated a step-change in the representation of heavy rainfall and rainfall characteristics (frequency-intensity) compared to coarser resolution Global and Regional Climate models. The goal of this study is to better understand what explains the weaker frequency of precipitation in the CP ensemble by assessing the triggering process of precipitation in the different ensembles of regional climate simulations available over Europe. We focus on the statistical relationship between tropospheric temperature, humidity and precipitation to understand how the frequency of precipitation over Europe and the Mediterranean is impacted by model resolution and the representation of convection (parameterized vs. explicit). We employ a multi-model data-set with three different resolutions (0.44°, 0.11° and 0.0275°) produced in the context of the MED-CORDEX, EURO-CORDEX and the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study "Convective Phenomena over Europe and the Mediterranean" (FPSCONV). The multi-variate approach is applied to all model ensembles, and to several surface stations where the integrated water vapor (IWV) is derived from Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements. The results show that all model ensembles capture the temperature dependence of the critical value of IWV (IWVcv), above which an increase in precipitation frequency occurs, but the differences between the models in terms of the value of IWVcv, and the probability of its being exceeded, can be large at higher temperatures. The lower frequency of precipitation in convection-permitting simulations is not only explained by higher temperatures but also by a higher IWVcv necessary to trigger precipitation at similar temperatures, and a lower probability to exceed this critical value. The spread between models in simulating IWVcv and the probability of exceeding IWVcv is reduced over land in the ensemble of models with explicit convection, especially at high temperatures, when the convective fraction of total precipitation becomes more important and the influence of the representation of entrainment in models thus becomes more important. Over lowlands, both model resolution and convection representation affect precipitation triggering while over mountainous areas, resolution has the highest impact due to orography-induced triggering processes. Over the sea, since lifting is produced by large-scale convergence, the probability to exceed IWVcv does not depend on temperature, and the model resolution does not have a clear impact on the results.

Abstract: International audience; Synthesis of the dioxomolybdenum(vi) complexes [MoO2(L-3OMe)(EtOH)) (1), (MoO2(L-4OMe)(EtOH)] (2) and [MoO2(L-H)(EtOH)] (3) and dioxotungsten(VI) complexes [WO2(L-3OMe)(EtOH)] (4), [WO2(L-4OMe)(EtOH)] (5) and [WO2(L-H)](n) (6a) was carried out using [MO2(C5H7O2)(2)] = Mo or W) and the corresponding aroythydrazone ligand H2LR (3-methoxysalicylaldehyde 4-hydroxybenzhydrazone (H2L3OMe), 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde 4-hydroxybenzhydrazone (H2L4OMe), or salicylaldehyde 4-hydroxybenzhydrazone (H2LH) in ethanol. Compounds obtained upon heating of the mononuclear complexes in acetonitrile or dichtoromethane, [MO2(L-R)](n) (1a-6a) or [MoO2(L-3OMe)](2) (1b), respectively, were also investigated. Crystal and molecular structures of the mononuclear 1, 2 and 3, polynuclear 1a.MeCN and dinuclear 1b complexes were determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. Powder X-ray diffraction showed isostructurality of 1 and 4, and 2 and 5. The complexes were further characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, TO and DSC analyses, and one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The catalytic performances of 1-5 and 6a were investigated for epoxidation of cyclooctene using aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant.

Abstract: The present chapter gives an overview of the application of Attenuated total reflection - Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) to the environmentally important mineral - aqueous electrolyte interface. At these interfaces the important adsorption processes occur that limit the availability of potentially toxic solutes. These retention processes may retard for example the migration of solutes in aquifer systems or even immobilize them on the aquifer material, which is usually a natural mineral. We give an introduction to the approach and an overview of its possible applicability (and in this context its use in contributing to the understanding of the acid-base chemistry of (oxy)(hydr)oxide mineral surfaces, the adsorption of anions and cations like the uranyl-ion, and the formation of ternary surface complexes can be mentioned in general). Our contribution focuses on a review on the interaction of small organic molecules with oxidic surfaces and we highlight previous studies and point to some controversary issues in selected studies that continue to exist despite extensive research. Obviously such studies relate to other vibrational spectroscopies like Raman or sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopies. Finally we discuss results from an experimental study on the mineral gibbsite (Al(OH)3) in the presence of 5-sulfosalicylic acid (5-SSA).

Abstract: 5 pages; International audience; This article documents the addition of 411 microsatellite marker loci and 15 pairs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Anopheles lesteri, Aspergillus clavatus, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus terreus, Branchiostoma japonicum, Branchiostoma belcheri, Colias behrii, Coryphopterus personatus, Cynogolssus semilaevis, Cynoglossus semilaevis, Dendrobium officinale, Dendrobium officinale, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Metrioptera roeselii, Myrmeciza exsul, Ochotona thibetana, Neosartorya fischeri, Nothofagus pumilio, Onychodactylus fischeri, Phoenicopterus roseus, Salvia officinalis L., Scylla paramamosain, Silene latifo, Sula sula, and Vulpes vulpes. Abstract: In this paper we give moduli of analytic classification for parabolic Dulac i.e. almost regular germs. Dulac germs appear as first return maps of hyperbolic polycycles. Their moduli are given by a sequence of Ecalle-Voronin-like germs of analytic diffeomorphisms. Abstract: Given the paucity of information about genome size in the genus Centaurea, nuclear DNA content of 15 Centaurea taxa, belonging to four subgenera and six different sections, has been investigated for the first time. The sample concerns 21 populations from the Dalmatia region of Croatia. The 2C DNA content and GC percentage were assessed by flow cytometry and chromosome number was determined using standard methods. Genome size of studied Centaurea ranged from 2C = 1.67 to 3.72 pg. These results were in accordance with chromosome number and especially with ploidy level that varies throughout this group; 2C DNA values ranged from 1.67 to 3.43 pg for diploid, and from 3.19 to 3.72 for polyploid taxa. No significant intraspecific variations of DNA amount were found between two subspecies of C. visiani and C. ragusina, nor between two varieties of C. gloriosa. However, some populations of C. glaberrima and C. cuspidata showed a significant difference in DNA amount. Three different basic chromosome numbers were observed in studied species (x = 9, 10, and 11). The most frequent basic number was x = 9. C. rupestris, C. ragusina ssp. ragusina, and C. r. ssp. lungensis possessed x = 10 and C. tuberosa x = 11. The species with a basic chromosome number of x = 9 had a small genome size and the smallest chromosomes (on average 0.09 to 0.12 pg/chromosome) but frequently present polyploidy. Centaurea ragusina ssp. ragusina and C. r. ssp. lungensis had a mean base composition 41.3 % GC.

Abstract: The increase in computational resources has enabled the emergence of multi-model ensembles of convection-permitting regional climate model (CPRCM) simulations at very high horizontal resolutions. An example is the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study on “Convective phenomena at high resolution over Europe and the Mediterranean”, a set of kilometre-scale simulations over an extended Alpine domain. This first-of-its-kind multi-model ensemble, forced by the ERA-Interim reanalysis, can be considered a benchmark dataset. This study uses a recently proposed metric to determine the added value of all the available Flagship Pilot Study hindcast kilometre-scale simulations for maximum and minimum temperature. The analysis is performed using state-of-the-art gridded and station observations as ground truth. This approach directly assesses the added value between the high-resolution CPRCMs against their driving global simulations and coarser resolution RCM counterparts. Overall, models display some modest gains, but also considerable shortcomings are exhibited. In part, these deficiencies can be attributed to the assimilation of temperature observations into ERA-Interim. Although the gains for the use of kilometre-scale resolution for temperature are limited, the improvement of the spatial representation of local atmospheric circulations and land–atmosphere interactions can ultimately lead to gains, particularly in coastal areas. Abstract: International audience; The wireless power transfer (WPT) efficiency to implanted bioelectronic devices is constrained by several frequency-dependent physical mechanisms. Recent works have developed several mathematical formulations to understand these mechanisms and predict the optimal operating conditions. However, the existing approaches rely on simplified body models, which are unable to capture important aspects of WPT. Therefore, this article proposes the efficiency analysis approach in anatomical models that can provide insightful information on achieving the optimum operation conditions. First, this approach is validated with a theoretical spherical wave expansion (SWE) analysis, and the results for a simplified spherical model and a human pectoral model are compared. The results show that although a magnetic receiver outperforms an electric one for near-field operation and both the sources could be equally use in the far-field range, it is in the mid-field that the maximum efficiency is achieved with an optimum frequency between 1 and 5 GHz depending on the implantation depth. The receiver orientation is another factor that affects the efficiency, with a maximum difference between the best and worst case scenarios around five times for the electric source and over 13 times for the magnetic one. This approach is used to analyze the case of a deep-implanted pacemaker wirelessly powered by an on-body transmitter and subjected to stochastic misalignments. We evaluate the efficiency and exposure, and we demonstrate how a buffered transmitter can be tailored to achieve maximum powering efficiency. Finally, design guidelines that lead to optimal implantable WPT systems are established from the results obtained with the proposed approach.

Abstract: 13 Pág., Preserving diversity of indigenous pig (Sus scrofa) breeds is a key factor to (i) sustain the pork chain (both at local and global scales) including the production of high-quality branded products, (ii) enrich the animal biobanking and (iii) progress conservation policies. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips offer the opportunity for whole-genome comparisons among individuals and breeds. Animals from twenty European local pigs breeds, reared in nine countries (Croatia: Black Slavonian, Turopolje; France: Basque, Gascon; Germany: Schwabisch-Hällisches Schwein; Italy: Apulo Calabrese, Casertana, Cinta Senese, Mora Romagnola, Nero Siciliano, Sarda; Lithuania: Indigenous Wattle, White Old Type; Portugal: Alentejana, Bísara; Serbia: Moravka, Swallow-Bellied Mangalitsa; Slovenia: Krškopolje pig; Spain: Iberian, Majorcan Black), and three commercial breeds (Duroc, Landrace and Large White) were sampled and genotyped with the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler (GGP) 70 K HD porcine genotyping chip. A dataset of 51 Wild Boars from nine countries was also added, summing up to 1186 pigs (~ 49 pigs/breed). The aim was to: (i) investigate individual admixture ancestries and (ii) assess breed traceability via discriminant analysis on principal components (DAPC). Albeit the mosaic of shared ancestries found for Nero Siciliano, Sarda and Moravka, admixture analysis indicated independent evolvement for the rest of the breeds. Abstract: Two closely related spruces, Picea abies and Picea omorika, a Balkan paleoendemic species, often share habitats, yet never hybridize in nature. The present study adresses their characteristics such as nuclear DNA content, base composition, heterochromatin and rDNA pattern. The genome size of P. abies was 10% larger than that of P. omorika when assessed by flow cytometry, respectively 2C=37.2 pg and 33.8 pg ; although when estimated as total chromosome length it was virtually the same. The heterochromatin Chromomycin-A (CMA)/DAPI fluorochrome banding patterns of both P. abies and P. omorika are given here for the first time. Simultaneous FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) using 18S-26S and 5S rDNA probes revealed 16 18S rDNA sites in P. omorika, 12 18S rDNA sites in P. abies, and a single 5S rDNA locus in both species. The genomes have about 41% GC. The number and position of CMA/DAPI bands and rDNA loci provide good chromosome markers to clarify the karyotypes of the two species.

Abstract: International audience; Pyridoxal hydrazonato molybdenum(VI) complexes were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding hydrazone (H2L1 = pyridoxal isonicotinic acid hydrazone, H2L2 = pyridoxal benzhydrazone, H2L3 = pyridoxal 4-hydroxy benzhydrazone) and [MoO2(acac)(2)] under appropriate conditions. The complexes can be classified into three categories: mononuclear [MoO2(L1-3)(MeOH)], polynuclear [MoO2(L1-3)](n) and hybrid organic-inorganic compounds with the Lindqvist polyoxomolybdate [MoO2(HL1-3)](2)Mo6O19. A unique example of a cationic polymer assembly with Lindqvist anions is reported herein for the first time. The compounds were characterised by elemental, TG and DSC analyses and by spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis, H-1, C-13 NMR) techniques. The crystal and molecular structure of the pyridoxal benzhydrazone H2L2, three mononuclear complexes [MoO2(L1-3)(MeOH)], and the Lindqvist-containing compounds [MoO2(HL2)](2)Mo6O19 center dot 2MeCN and (H4L1)Mo6O19 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. All complexes were tested as (pre)catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclooctene under solvent-free conditions with the use of aqueous TBHP (TBHP tert-butylhydroperoxyde) as an oxidant. Optimal results in terms of conversion, selectivity, TOF and TON were obtained at very low (pre)catalyst loadings (0.05% [Mo] vs. substrate). The influence of the Linqvist anion on catalytic performance is discussed.

We analyze the variation of the aforementioned invariants in a simple but informative example, in which the polynomial F is defined by a product of four lines. We study as well the relation of this behavior with the length of the corresponding Godbillon–Vey sequence. We formulate a conjecture motivated by the study of this example.

Abstract: Among europium compounds, pressure induced valence transitions and/or intermediate valence states are often observed. In such systems, applying pressure of several GPa can drive a Eu valence from divalent to almost trivalent. Non-centrosymmetric EuRhGe3 possesses magnetic Eu2+ ions and exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at ∼11 K at ambient pressure. Pressure resistant magnetic ordering and stable divalent Eu state have been reported in EuRhGe3. Here, we study the pressure evolution of the Eu valence of EuRhGe3 by high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy using the partial fluorescence yield method. Our study reveals a successive increase of the Eu valence with increasing pressure without any valence transition. The obtained mean Eu valence approaches ∼2.4 around 40 GPa at 300 K. The experimental data are also analyzed by a full multiplet configuration interaction calculation based on the single impurity Anderson model. The analysis reveals a decrease of the Eu 4f orbital occupation by applying pressure. Pressure evolution of the electronic structure studied by density functional theory suggests that the Rh ions have little contribution to the pressure evolution of the Eu valence, while it implies an active involvement of the Ge ions.

Abstract: International audience; The absolute separation of a polynomial is the minimum nonzero difference between the absolute values of its roots. In the case of polynomials with integer coefficients, it can be bounded from below in terms of the degree and the height (the maximum absolute value of the coefficients) of the polynomial. We improve the known bounds for this problem and related ones. Then we report on extensive experiments in low degrees, suggesting that the current bounds are still very pessimistic.

Abstract: We consider a class of power-logarithmic germs. We call them parabolic Dulac germs, as they appear as Dulac germs (first-return germs) of hyperbolic polycycles. In view of formal or analytic characterization of such a germ f by fractal properties of several of its orbits, we study the tubular $$\varepsilon $$ -neighborhoods of orbits of f with initial points $$x_0$$ . We denote by $$A_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ the length of such a tubular $$\varepsilon $$ -neighborhood. We show that, even if f is an analytic germ, the function $$\varepsilon \mapsto A_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ does not have a full asymptotic expansion in $$\varepsilon $$ in the scale of powers and (iterated) logarithms. Hence, this partial asymptotic expansion cannot contain necessary information for analytic classification. In order to overcome this problem, we introduce a new notion: the continuous time length of the $$\varepsilon $$ -neighborhood $$A^c_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ . We show that this function has a full transasymptotic expansion in $$\varepsilon $$ in the power, iterated logarithm scale. Moreover, its asymptotic expansion extends the initial, existing part of the asymptotic expansion of the classical length $$\varepsilon \mapsto A_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ . Finally, we prove that this initial part of the asymptotic expansion determines the class of formal conjugacy of the Dulac germ f.

Abstract: International audience; This contribution describes the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic implementation of the highly constrained molybdenum(VI) polymers [MoO2(LR)]n (with R = H (1), 3OMe (2), and 4OMe (3)) and cyclic tetramer [MoO2(L4OMe)]4·0.5MeCN (3′·0.5MeCN) with nicotinoyl hydrazonato ligands (LR) derived from salicylaldehyde (LH), 3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenaldehyde (L3OMe), or 4-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (L4OMe). In order to determine the most stable geometries, conformational analysis of the free and coordinated ligands in these assemblies was carried out through the potential energy surface scans using quantum-chemical methods. The mononuclear analogues [MoO2(HLR)(MeOH)]Cl (R = H (1a) and 3OMe (2a)), [MoO2(HLR)Cl] (R = 3OMe (2b) and 4OMe (3b)), and [MoO2(LR)(MeOH)] (R = H (1c), and 4OMe (3c-α and 3c-β)) were also synthesized and evaluated as potential precursors for reactions in the solid state. Vapor induced transformation of 2a quantitatively afforded complex 2b. The chemometric analysis using principal component analysis was applied to provide insight into the reaction profile. Thermally induced solid-state reactions resulted in the transformation of metallocycle 3′·0.5MeCN and monomeric complexes 1c, 2a, 3c-α, and 3c-β into the corresponding coordination polymers. The structural features responsible for these conversions are discussed in detail. Lastly, the metallosupramolecular architectures were tested as catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation by using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant in water or decane. Compound 3′ is shown to be the most effective and selective catalyst.

Abstract: International audience; Ceria (CeO$_2$) nanoparticles are known to be very often used in various applications from biomedicine to fuel cells. To optimize the applications, detailed information about the physicochemical properties such as size, shape, and charge of nanoparticles should be available. Therefore, in our study we performed a systematic study of ceria nanoparticles ranging from synthesis to comprehensive experimental and theoretical characterization. We synthesized ceria nanoparticles using two synthesis paths which led to the formation of two types of ceria nanoparticles. The structure and charging properties of both types of ceria nanoparticles were studied by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), particle charge detector (PCD) for surface charge density, and a ZetaPlus instrument for electrophoretic mobility measurements. The results suggested that in the case where hydrolysis of Ce(NO$_3$)$_3$ at room temperature was applied nanoparticles with morphology close to a spherical, more exactly truncated octahedron were synthesized. On the other hand, nanoparticles obtained by hydrothermal synthesis had characteristic cube-like morphology. Finally, for more complete understanding and interpretation of the studied system, we prepared a theoretical model based on the classical density functional theory for electrolyte solutions coupled with the surface charge regulation via the law of mass action. Even without using fitting parameters, the theory adequately describes the experimental data. All the results obtained in our study could serve as a basis for obtaining tuned and engineered ceria nanoparticles with optimized physicochemical properties which could lead to the improved applications of the nanotechnology in the biomedical research.

Abstract: Higher symmetries frequently amaze human beings because of the illusions and incredible landscapes such symmetries can produce. For example, imagine the unearthly pictures of the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. He made use of glide symmetry and reflection to produce unbelievable transitions and transformations of objects and beings, as illustrated in Figure 1(a). However, the history of higher symmetries started much earlier. Escher was partially inspired by the Moorish tessellations in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, such as the ones pictured in Figure 1(b). Special attention was addressed to the comparison of oxidizing agents, TBHP in water vs. TBHP in decane. The idea was to test the greenness of the complete process. Density Functional Theory calculations were used to support and explain experimental catalytic result for tetranuclear self-assembled systems.

Abstract: International audience; We present an in-depth investigation of the membrane interactions of peptidoglycan (PGN)-based immune adjuvants designed for lipid-based delivery systems using NMR spectroscopy. The derivatives contain a cargo peptidoglycan (PGN) dipeptide fragment and an adamantyl group, which serves as an anchor to the lipid bilayer. Furthermore, derivatives with a mannose group that can actively target cell surface receptors on immune cells are also studied. We showed that the targeting mannose group and the cargo PGN fragment are both available on the lipid bilayer surface, thereby enabling interactions with cognate receptors. We found that the nonmannosylated compounds are incorporated stronger into the lipid assemblies than the mannosylated ones, but the latter compounds penetrate deeper in the bilayer. This might be explained by stronger electrostatic interactions available for zwitterionic nonmannosylated derivatives as opposed to the compounds in which the charged N-terminus is capped by mannose groups. The higher incorporation efficiency of the nonmannosylated compounds correlated with a larger relative enhancement in immune stimulation activities upon lipid incorporation compared to that of the derivatives with the mannose group. The chirality of the adamantyl group also influenced the incorporation efficiency, which in turn correlated with membrane-associated conformations that affect possible intermolecular interactions with lipid molecules. These findings will help in improving the development of PGN-based immune adjuvants suitable for delivery in lipid nanoparticles.

Abstract: We report $^{105}$Pd NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$, where antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic orders develop at low temperature. From the analysis of NQR and NMR spectra, we have determined the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors and the anisotropic Knight shift ($K$) components for both inequivalent Pd sites - Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$). The observed EFG values are in excellent agreement with our state-of-the-art DFT calculations. The principal values of the quadrupolar coupling are $(20.37 \pm 0.02)$ MHz and $(5.45 \pm 0.02)$ MHz, for the Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$) site, respectively, which is large compared to the Larmor frequency defined by the gyromagnetic constant $\gamma = 1.94838$ MHz/T for $^{105}$Pd. Therefore, the complete knowledge of $K$ and the EFG tensors is crucial to establish the correspondence between NMR spectra and crystallographic sites, which is needed for a complete analysis of the magnetic structure, static spin susceptibility, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate data and a better understanding of the groundstate of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$., Comment: 7 pages; 6 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

Abstract: International audience; X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a non-destructive technique that offers a 3D insight into the microstructure of thick (opaque) samples with virtually no preliminary sample preparation. Since its first medical application in 1973, the technique has improved dramatically in terms of acquisition times and resolution. The best resolution achievable for both parallel-and cone-beam setups is presently sub-micron. The macroscopic properties (stiffness, resistance, permeability, durability,. . .) of cementitious materials are known to be significantly affected by their multiscale microstructure. This calls for x-ray CT investigations of cementitious materials down to the smallest length-scales. The present review first provides background information on the technique (including image-processing). It then covers various applications of x-ray CT to cementitious materials: imaging of the porous network, durability experiments, damage experiments,… , cutting-edge nanotomography experiments. Current challenges such as time-and chemically-resolved experiments are also discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Symmetrical disubstituted carbohydrazides (H4L1–6) when reacted with [MoO2(acac)2] (in 1 : 2 molar ratio) afford the corresponding discrete complexes, [(MoO2)2L1,5,6(MeOH)2], [(MoO2)2L1,5,6(Im)2] (Im = imidazole), and/or polymeric ensembles, [(MoO2)2L1–6]n, depending on the reaction solvent, the ligand framework and the presence of ancillary coordinating species. In these assemblies, asymmetrical dimolybdenum(vi) entities, [(MoO2)2L1–6], wherein the corresponding carbohydrazide acts as an adaptable two-compartment ligand offering ONO and ONN coordination environments, serve as the main building blocks. The solid-state structures of the obtained materials were elucidated via X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, whereas the behaviour of polymeric ensembles in DMSO-d6 solution was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance. Thermal studies revealed that the discrete species transform to the corresponding polymeric ensembles upon heating, whereas upon grinding they either remain intact or afford their reactive and coordinatively unsaturated (pentacoordinated) counterparts. While the discrete methanol-based complexes have a comparable spatial arrangement of ancillary ligands, imidazole-based ones offer substantially different scenario which was addressed in detail via density functional theory calculations. Finally, the polymeric ensembles were shown to be efficient catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation under eco-friendly conditions while employing aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant.

Abstract: Autochthonous pig breeds provide products of differentiated quality, among which quality control is difficult to perform and insufficient for current market requirements. The present research evaluates the predictive ability of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, combined with chemometric methods as a rapid and affordable tool to assure traceability and quality control. Thus, NIR technology was assessed for intact and minced muscle Longissimus thoracis et lumborum samples collected from 12 European autochthonous pig breeds for the quantification of lipid content and fatty acid composition. Different tests were performed using different numbers of samples for calibration and validation. The best predictive ability was found using minced presentation and set with 80% of the samples for the calibration and the remaining 20% for the external validation test for the following traits: lipid content and saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which attained both the highest determination coefficients (0.89, 0.61, and 0.65, respectively) and the lowest root mean square errors in external validation (0.62, 1.82, and 1.36, respectively). Lower predictive ability was observed for intact muscles. Abstract: We prove a sequence of limiting results about weakly dependent stationary and regularly varying stochastic processes in discrete time. After deducing the limiting distribution for individual clusters of extremes, we present a new type of point process convergence theorem. It is designed to preserve the entire information about the temporal ordering of observations which is typically lost in the limit after time scaling. By going beyond the existing asymptotic theory, we are able to prove a new functional limit theorem. Its assumptions are satisfied by a wide class of applied time series models, for which standard limiting theory in the space $D$ of \cadlag\ functions does not apply. To describe the limit of partial sums in this more general setting, we use the space~$E$ of so--called decorated \cadlag\ functions. We also study the running maximum of partial sums for which a corresponding functional theorem can be still expressed in the familiar setting of space $D$. We further apply our method to analyze record times in a sequence of dependent stationary observations, even when their marginal distribution is not necessarily regularly varying. Under certain restrictions on dependence among the observations, we show that the record times after scaling converge to a relatively simple compound scale invariant Poisson process., 40 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: A derivation of the model for a poroelastic elliptic membrane shell is undertaken. The flow and deformation in a three-dimensional shell domain is described by the quasi-static Biot equations of linear poroelasticity. We consider the limit when the shell thickness goes to zero and look for the limit equations. Using the technique developed in the seminal articles by Ciarlet, Lods, Miara et al.and the recent results on the rigorous derivation of the equations for poroelastic plates and flexural poroelastic shells by Marciniak-Czochra, Mikelić, and Tambača, we present a rigorous derivation of the linear poroelastic elliptic membrane shell model. After rescaling, the corresponding velocity and the pressure field are close in the C([0, T] ; (H1x)2×(L2x)2) norm and the stresses in C([0, T] ; (L2x)9) norm. We note the major difference with respect to the flexural case: (i) it is not anymore the rescaled total stress divided by the scaling parameter, but the rescaled total stress itself which converges ; (ii) the same comment applies to the pore fluid pressure ; and (iii) there is a deterioration of the convergence for the vertical component of the rescaled displacement. Consequence of the above differences is that the effective model remains of the 2nd order in space. In the case of a spherical membrane shell, we confirm the results by Taber from the literature.

Abstract: The synthesis and properties of a novel hetero-tetranuclear compound [Cr2(bpy)4(μ-O)4Nb2(C2O4)4]·3H2O (1 ; bpy = 2, 2′-bipyridine), investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization measurements, IR, UV/visible spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR ; X- and Q-bands and high-field), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, are reported. Crystal structure of 1 (orthorhombic Pcab space group) consists of a square-shaped macrocyclic {; ; ; ; ; Cr2(μ-O)4Nb2}; ; ; ; ; core in which CrIII and NbV ions are alternately bridged by oxo ions and three uncoordinated water molecules. The intramolecular CrIII···CrIII distances through the −O–NbV–O– bridges are 7.410(2) and 7.419(2) Å, while diagonal separation is 5.406(2) Å. The temperature dependence of magnetization M(T) evidences an anti-ferromagnetic ground state, which originates from a magnetic interaction between two CrIII ions of spin 3/2 through two triatomic −O–NbV–O– diamagnetic bridges. A spin Hamiltonian appropriate for polynuclear isolated magnetic units was used. The best-fitting curve for this model is obtained with the parameters gCr = 1.992(3), J = −12.77(5) cm–1, and |D| = 0.17(4) cm–1. The CrIII···CrIII dimer model is confirmed by EPR spectra, which exhibit a pronounced change of their shape around the temperature corresponding to the intradimer coupling J. The EPR spectra simulations and DFT calculations reveal the presence of a single-ion anisotropy that is close to being uniaxial, D = −0.31 cm–1 and E = 0.024 cm–1.

Abstract: The fundamental role of the ocean for life and well-being on Earth is more and more recognised at the highest political level. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development were adopted by world leaders. The SDG 14 ‘Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’ is dedicated to the oceans. The mention of the ocean in the Paris Agreement signed in 2016 marked a decisive milestone. In 2018, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) has been proclaimed (https://en.unesco.org/ocean-decade): The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO will gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework to foster evidence-based policy-making. In fall 2019, the IPCC special report on ocean and cryosphere will be published, and will provide an opportunity to increase awareness and action before COP251 (already claimed as ‘Blue COP’).

Abstract: International audience; Ageing a mixture of sodium molybdate, malonic acid, and tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(iii) chloride using different synthetic routes, namely, solution-based methods at room temperature or 110 degrees C, and a mechanochemically accelerated vapour-assisted method, yielded the polyoxomolybdate [Co(en)3]5Na[Mo7O24(mu-Mo8O26)Mo7O24].nH2O (1). The new polyoxomolybdate anion 1 comprised three fragments, namely, two {Mo7O24} units bridged by a {Mo8O26} unit, which were interconnected by the terminal oxygen atoms of MoO6 octahedra and represent a unique structural motif not yet described in the structurally versatile chemistry of polyoxomolybdates (POMos). The ageing reaction was found to occur via a series of intermediates, two of which were isolated and identified as the heptamolybdate coordination polymer [Co(en)3]2[NaMo7O24]Cl.nH2O (2), comprising {Mo7O24} units bridged by a sodium atom, and the heptamolybdate (H3O)[Co(en)3]2[Mo7O24]Cl.9H2O (3). An identical reaction procedure with [Co(C2O4)(en)2]+ instead of [Co(en)3]3+ yielded the orthomolybdate [Co(C2O4)(en)2]2[MoO4].9H2O (4) and the hydrogen malonate [Co(C2O4)(en)2]C3O4H3 (5). The new polyoxomolybdate [Co(en)3]5Na[Mo7O24(mu-Mo8O26)Mo7O24].nH2O was also examined as a catalyst for the epoxidation of cyclooctene, and was superior to both heptamolybdate and octamolybdate catalysts over 24 h. The heptamolybdate [Co(NH3)6]2[Mo7O24].8H2O (6) was isolated as the only reaction product of sodium molybdate and hexaamminecobalt(iii) nitrate in the presence of malonic acid using solution-based methods.

Abstract: First return maps in the neighborhood of hyperbolic polycycles have their asymptotic expansion as Dulac series, which are series with power-logarithm monomials. We extend the class of Dulac series to an algebra of power-logarithm transseries. Inside this new algebra, we provide formal normal forms of power-log transseries and a formal embedding theorem. The questions of classifications and of embeddings of germs into flows of vector fields are common problems in dynamical systems. Aside from that, our motivation for this work comes from fractal analysis of orbits of first return maps around hyperbolic polycycles. This is a joint work with Pavao Mardešić, Jean-Philippe Rolin and Vesna Županović.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this work is to estimate the parameters of elastoplastic and damage laws for nodular graphite cast iron from a cyclic uniaxial test on a dog-bone sample. The paper focuses on the identification of material parameters coupling finite element models and full-field measurements. The gap between the measured and simulated data is used to estimate the quality of the proposed constitutive postulates. Last, a cyclic uniaxial experiment is carried out in a lab tomograph to reveal the damage micro-mechanism. Digital volume correlation is used to measure displacement fields in the bulk of the sample. The correlation residuals are used to detect the damage mechanism occurring in the heterogeneous microstructure of the material.

Abstract: International audience; Compost amendments and tillage practices can modify soil structure and create heterogeneities at the local scale. Tillage affects soil physical properties and consequently water and solute transport in soil, while compost addition to soil influences pesticide sorption and degradation processes. Based on the long-term field experiment QualiAgro (a INRA–Veolia partnership), a modeling study was carried out using HYDRUS-2D to evaluate how two different compost types combined with the presence of heterogeneities due to tillage affect water and isoproturon dynamics in soil compared to a control plot. A municipal solid waste compost (MSW) and a co-compost of sewage sludge and green wastes (SGW) have been applied to experimental plots. In each plot, wick lysimeters, TDR probes, and tensiometers were installed to monitor water and solute dynamics. In the plowed layer, four zones differing in their structure were identified: compacted clods, non-compacted soil, interfurrows, and the plow pan. From 2004 to 2010, the unamended control (CONT) plot had the largest cumulative water outflow (1388 mm) compared to the MSW plot (962 mm) and SGW plot (979 mm). After calibration, the model was able to describe cumulative water outflow for the whole 2004–2010 period with a model efficiency value of 0.99 for all three plots. The CONT plot had the largest isoproturon cumulated leaching (21.31 μg) while similar cumulated isoproturon leaching was measured in the SGW (0.663 μg) and MSW (0.245 μg) plots. The model was able to simulate isoproturon leaching patterns except for the large preferential flow events that were observed in the MSW and CONT plots. The timing of these preferential flow events could be reproduced by the model but not their magnitude. Modeling results indicate that spatial and temporal variations in pesticide degradation rate due to tillage and compost application play a major role in the dynamics of isoproturon leaching. Both types of compost were found to reduce isoproturon leaching on the 6 year duration of the experiment.

Abstract: International audience; The emergence and early development of agro-pastoral activities in Mediterranean coastal areas were key drivers of ecosystem change. While the role of anthropogenic pressures is now well understood, the identification and chronology of the first human imprints on ecosystem dynamics is still an open debate in several countries, especially in the northeastern Adriatic where there is a paucity of palaeoecological data. For the period 5200-3200 cal BP, we here report a comprehensive and integrative study of Northern Adriatic Croatia (Istrian Peninsula, Busuja Bay), showing that: (i) significant human impacts on ecosystems began around 5000 years ago, during the Chalcolithic; (ii) anthropogenic pressures (agriculture and human-induced fire) were the main drivers of long-term ecological change; (iii) local coastal shifts (higher seawater inputs in the sheltered bay) also played a decisive role in ecosystem dynamics; and (iv) climate pressures compounded human impacts. We also suggest that wild olive trees (Olea europaea subsp. europaea var. sylvestris) were an integral part of early diversified agriculture, 500 years before the Bronze Age.

Abstract: Recent studies (J. Alloys Compd. 695 (2017) 2661) of the electronic structure and properties of (TiZrNbCu)1-xNix (x ≤ 0.25) amorphous high entropy alloys (a-HEA) have been extended to x = 0.5 in order to compare behaviours of a-HEA and conventional Ni-base metallic glasses (MG). The amorphous state of all samples was verified by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD indicated a probable change in local atomic arrangements, i.e. short-range-order (SRO) for x ≥ 0.35. Simultaneously, thermal parameters, such as the first crystallization temperature Tx and the liquidus temperature showed a tendency to saturate for x ≥ 0.35. The same tendency also appeared in the magnetic susceptibility χexp and the linear term in the low temperature specific heat γ. The Debye temperatures and Young's moduli also tend to saturate for x ≥ 0.35. These unusual changes in SRO and all properties within the amorphous phase seem correlated with the change of valence electron number (VEC) on increasing x.

Abstract: We present homogenization of the viscous incompressible porous media flows under stress boundary conditions at the outer boundary. In addition to Darcy’s law describing filtration in the interior of the porous medium, we derive rigorously the effective pressure boundary condition at the outer boundary. It is a linear combination of the outside pressure and the applied shear stress. We use the two-scale convergence in the sense of boundary layers, introduced by Allaire and Conca (1997) to obtain the boundary layer structure next to the outer boundary. The approach allows establishing the strong L 2 -convergence of the velocity corrector and identification of the effective boundary velocity slip jump. The theoretical results are confirmed through numerical experiments.

Abstract: Summary GRain is freely available software intended to enable and promote testing of hypotheses with respect to purging and heterogeneity of inbreeding depression. The program is based on a stochastic approach, the gene dropping method, and calculates various coefficients from large and complex pedigrees. GRain calculates, together with the ‘classical’ inbreeding coefficient, ancestral inbreeding coefficients proposed by Ballou, (1997) J. Hered., 88, 169 and Kalinowski et al., (2000) Conserv. Biol., 14, 1375 as well as an ancestral history coefficient (AHC), defined here for the first time. AHC is defined as the number that tells how many times during pedigree segregation (gene dropping) a randomly taken allele has been in IBD status. Furthermore, GRain enables testing of heterogeneity and/or purging of inbreeding depression with respect to different founders/ancestors by calculating partial coefficients for all previously obtained coefficients.
