6. Green rewards for optimizing employee environmental performance: examining the role of perceived organizational support for the environment and internal environmental orientation.

Abstract

Over the last decade, much attention has been paid to the effectiveness of green reward practices in fostering employee achievement of environmental performance. The current literature reports contradictory findings and points to several gaps in our understanding. First, the effect of green rewards on individual environmental performance is mixed, at best. Second, the role of internal environmental orientation on this effect has been overlooked. Using data from two independent studies, this paper provides findings that help address these issues. The results show that organizational support for the environment conveys the effect of green reward practices on employee environmental performance and indicates that internal environmental orientation only strengthens the indirect effect at high levels. The findings are discussed in light of the literature. The findings draw on two independent samples. POSE conveys the effect of green rewards on employee environmental performance. Abstract

Recent research on green human resource management suggests that the social exchange process is conducive to employees behaving pro-environmentally. Previous studies have focused exclusively on reciprocal exchange and have largely overlooked the possibility that negotiated exchange also occurs. In this paper, a research model is developed to test whether the effect of green human resource management on employee eco-initiatives through the mediation of supervisory support for the environment is conditioned by felt responsibility for change and negotiated exchanges. Using data from a two-wave study, the findings show that the mediating effect is stronger at high levels of negotiated exchange only for employees displaying low levels of felt responsibility for change. The results also indicate that negotiated exchanges do not intervene in the case of employees exhibiting high levels of felt responsibility for change. 20. Commitment-based persistence in the face of venture decline: towards a renewed approach to small business orientation.

Abstract

The development of a nation or a region depends on saving existing businesses as much as on creating new ones. Small business orientation theories suggest that small business owners' long-term commitment may contribute to the robustness of their venture. Our study further investigates the relationship between small business owners' affective, continuance and normative commitment and intention to persist with an underperforming venture. Based on a sample of 298 small business owners from Reunion Island, our results first confirm a negative effect of venture decline on small business owners' intention to persist with their venture. Second, they show a positive effect of affective and continuance commitment on venture persistence. Finally, our main finding is that venture performance positively moderates the effect of normative commitment, with the latter only becoming significant when venture performance declines. This research renews small business orientation theory by suggesting that robustness is not always straightforward and sometimes means persisting in the face of decline, and by arguing that these adverse circumstances put small business owners to the test and fully reveal the strength of their commitment. Abstract

International audience; A travers l’étude exploratoire des parcours de quinze paysans malgaches ayant bénéficié de plusieurs microcrédits, nous questionnons les relations possibles entre ce dispositif et le réengagement entrepreneurial des bénéficiaires dans le cadre de très petites entreprises agricoles au sein de sociétés rurales traditionnelles. Transposant le modèle établi par Valéau (2007) à ce contexte, nous focalisons notre attention sur les dimensions psychologiques de ce processus. Nous examinons tout d’abord les doutes et les contradictions liées aux conditions de vie, mais aussi à un contexte traditionnel rural où l’innovation n’est pas la norme. Nos résultats montrent qu’à partir de conditions relativement similaires, les individus rencontrés se différencient progressivement les uns des autres au regard de leur réengagement entrepreneurial et, ce faisant, des stratégies et des performances de leur très petite entreprise. Nous identifions trois formes de réengagements tour à tour fondés sur la subsistance, la diversification et la croissance. Différentes pistes pour de futures recherches et des implications pratiques en matière de sélection et d’accompagnement des bénéficiaires sont discutées en opposant à un point de vue exclusivement commercial, des approches sociales et solidaires.

International audience; PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent to which the influence of professional commitment on intention to leave a profession is contingent on the combined effect of job search and sportsmanship.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on a sample of professional employees (N = 327). Moderated moderation was the approach used for testing the hypotheses.FindingsFindings showed that the moderating effect of job search on the relationship between professional commitment and intention to leave a profession is higher at a low level of sportsmanship and lower when sportsmanship is high.Originality/valueThe research indicates that job search does not necessarily constitute a sign of acceleration of intention to leave one’s profession. In the case of professionals expressing a high level of sportsmanship, job search appears more like a precaution.

Abstract

This study investigates the contingent effect of felt obligation to care about and aid the organization on the indirect effect of green training on employee environmental commitment through perceived organizational support for the environment. As hypothesized, based on data from 384 employees, our study found that the positive mediating effect is strengthened when felt obligation is low. The implications of these findings are twofold: They indicate that the development of employee environmental commitment is based on employees' perception that their employer supports their environmental initiatives by improving environmental skills. They also suggest that this process has little additional effect of employees already feeling obliged to do whatever they can to help their organization reach its goals, whatever they may but is crucial for employees with low-felt obligation. The article ends with a discussion of the findings in the light of the relevant environmental literature. Limitations and future research are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
