Several power take-off (PTO) architectures for wave-powered reverse osmosis (RO) desalination of seawater are introduced and compared based on the annual average freshwater production and the size of the components, which strongly relate to the costs of the system. The set of architectures compared includes a novel series-type PTO architecture not previously considered. These seawater hydraulic PTO architectures are composed of a WEC-driven pump, an RO module, an intake charge pump driven by an electric motor, and a hydraulic motor driving an electric generator for electric power production. This study is performed using an efficient two-way coupled steady-state model for the average performance of the system in a given sea state, including freshwater permeate production, electric power production, and electric power consumption. A multi-objective design problem is formulated for the purposes of this comparative study, with the objectives of maximizing annual freshwater production, minimizing the displacement of the WEC-driven pump, and minimizing the installed RO membrane area. This establishes a framework for comparison in the absence of a mature techno-economic model. The requirement that the system produces enough electric power to meet its consumption is applied as a constraint on the operation of the system. The oscillating wave surge converter Oyster 1 is assumed as the WEC. Weights on performance of the system in a given sea state are based on historical data from Humboldt Bay, CA. This study finds that (1) architectures in a series configuration allow for a reduction in the WEC-driven pump size of 59–92% compared to prior work, (2) varying the displacement of the WEC-driven pump between sea conditions does not provide any significant advantage in performance, and (3) varying the active RO membrane area between sea condition offers improvements between 7% and 41% in each design objective. Previous work comparing power take-off (PTO) architectures for ocean wave-powered reverse osmosis suggests that variable displacement in the wave energy converter (WEC)-driven pump does not offer a significant performance advantage. A limitation of that study is that the WEC was subject to a constant load within a given sea state ("Coulomb damping") and did not account for controlled, moment-to-moment variation of the PTO load enabled by a variable displacement pump. This study explores the potential performance advantage of a variable PTO load over Coulomb damping. Model predictive control is used to provide optimal load control with constraints on the PTO load. The constraints include minimum and maximum loads and a limit on the rate of load adjustment. Parameter studies on these constraints enable conclusions about PTO design requirements in addition to providing an estimated performance advantage over Coulomb damping. Numerical simulation of the Oyster 1 WEC is carried out with performance weighted by historical sea state data from Humboldt Bay, CA. The results show a performance advantage of up to 20% higher yearly-average power absorption over Coulomb damping. Additionally, the parameter studies suggest that the PTO load should be adjustable down to at least 25% of the maximum load and should be adjustable between the minimum and maximum loads within a few seconds. Reed valves are a type of check valve commonly found in a wide range of applications including air compressors, internal combustion engines, musical instruments, and even the human heart. While reed valves have been studied extensively in these applications, published research on the modeling and application of reed valves in hydraulic systems is sparse. Because the spring and mass components of a reed valve are contained in a single element, it is light and compact compared to traditional disk, poppet, or ball style check valves. These advantages make reed valves promising for use in high-frequency applications such as piston pumps, switch-mode hydraulics, and digital hydraulics. Furthermore, the small size and fast response of reed valves provide an opportunity to design pumps capable of operating at higher speeds and with lower dead volumes, thus increasing efficiency and power density. In this paper, a modeling technique for reed valves is presented and validated in a hydraulic piston pump test bed. Excellent agreement between modeled and experimentally measured reed valve opening is demonstrated. McKibben actuators, comprised of an elastomeric tube wrapped in inextensible fibers, were developed in the 1950s and have been used primarily in pneumatic applications. Mc-Kibben actuators provide superior force and power density at a lower cost compared to many conventional actuators due to their simple design. This paper explores driving McKibben actuators with high-pressure hydraulics and reflects on some challenges associated with modeling the actuators at hydraulic pressures. Twelve actuators were designed, fabricated, and tested experimentally over a range of contraction ratios. Four modeling approaches were evaluated against experimental data including a new model that eliminates some of the limitations of existing models by predicting output force as a function of initial actuator geometry only and capturing the nonlinear variation in elastomer wall thickness as the actuator is strained. The experimental results suggest that the existing McKibben force models presented in this paper are not as accurate as the new model for tracking total axial force generation. The absolute value of the error from experimental values of each of the four models ranged from 9.1% for the new model developed in this paper to 9.9%, 10.0%, and 10.5% for the three other existing approaches, but the new model has unique advantages in modeling hydraulic McKibben actuators that require thicker tube walls. Switch-mode hydraulic control is a compact and theoretically efficient alternative to throttling valve control or variable displacement pump control. However, a significant source of energy loss in switch-mode circuits is due to throttling during valve transitions. Hydraulic soft switching was previously proposed as a method of reducing the throttling energy loss, by absorbing, in a small variable volume chamber, the flow that would normally be throttled across the transitioning high-speed valve. An active locking mechanism was previously proposed that overcomes the main challenge with soft switching, which is a lock mechanism that releases quickly and with precise timing. This prior work demonstrated a reduction in energy losses by 66% compared to a control circuit. In this paper, a numerical model is developed for a switch-mode virtually variable displacement pump (VVDP) circuit, utilizing the proposed soft switch. The model is then used as a means of designing a proof of concept prototype to validate the model. The prototype design includes methods for controlling the soft switch spring preload, travel distance, piston displacement required to unlock the soft switch, valve command duty cycle, switching cycle period, and load pressure. Testing demonstrated that the soft switch circuit performed as expected in a baseline condition. The operating region for this prototype was found to be quite narrow. Switched inertance hydraulic systems (SIHS) use inductive, capacitive, and switching elements to boost or "buck" (reduce) a pressure from a source to a load in an ideally lossless manner. Real SIHS circuits suffer a variety of energy losses, with throttling of flow during transitions of the high-speed valve resulting in as much as 44% of overall losses. These throttling energy losses can be mitigated by applying the analog of zero-voltage-switching, a soft switching strategy, adopted from power electronics. In the soft switching circuit, the flow that would otherwise be throttled across the transitioning valve is stored in a capacitive element and bypassed through check valves in parallel with the switching valves. To evaluate the effectiveness of soft switching in a boost converter SIHS, a lumped parameter model was constructed. In order to improve the thermodynamic efficiency of an internal combustion engine (ICE), a Stephenson-III six-bar linkage is optimized to serve as a replacement for the traditional slider-crank. Novel techniques are presented for formulating the design variables in the kinematic optimization that guarantee satisfaction of the Grashof condition and of transmission angle requirements without the need for an explicit constraint function. Additionally, a nested generalization of the popular NSGA-II algorithm is presented that allows simultaneous optimization of the kinematic, dynamic, and thermodynamic properties of the mechanism. This approach successfully solves the complex six-objective optimization problem, with challenges for future refinement including improvement of the combustion simulation to attain better accuracy without prohibitive computational expense. In this paper, general strategies are presented by which a multi-domain, multi-objective, mechanism-based optimization problem may be efficiently formulated and solved by means of a genetic algorithm. These strategies include integration of traditional precision position techniques with genetic optimization, efficient selection of design variables and search bounds, and a nested optimization structure. A case study illustrating these methods is presented in which a hydraulic rescue spreader is simultaneously optimized for four objectives relating to structural efficiency and kinematic behavior. Abstract: The switch-mode continuously variable transmission is the mechanical analog of a DC–DC boost converter circuit and allows coupling a high speed flywheel to a mechanical load. The system requires a high-frequency clutch with a variable duty ratio and low slip during engagement and disengagement. In this paper, the synthesis and baseline testing of a novel digital clutch for this application are presented. The custom clutch design utilizes a double dwell axial cam with a profile that varies with radius. The duty cycle of the clutch is controlled through positioning the radial location of three translating followers, connected through a linkage. The axial clamping force of the clutch is generated through designed deflection of the system components and springs in series with the cam followers. Through baseline testing, the clutch was operated at angular velocities up to 45rad/s, creating clutch switching frequencies up to 22Hz. The average clutch efficiency at 20% duty cycle was 55%, yet the efficiency is highly dependent on the duty cycle and can be improved in future testing. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Switch-mode hydraulic circuits are a theoretically efficient, compact, fast responding, and inexpensive control option. Despite the many potential benefits of switch-mode hydraulic circuits, the control method suffers from large energy losses during transitions of the high-speed valve due to throttling and fluid compressibility. Rannow and Li previously proposed utilizing soft switching to minimize the throttling energy loss (Rannow and Li, "Soft Switching Approach to Reducing Transition Losses in On/Off Hydraulic Valve," J. Dyn. Syst., Measure. Control (in press)). A major challenge of this approach is a locking soft switch that releases quickly and with precise timing, while under load. In this paper, a novel soft switch locking mechanism is presented that utilizes the pressure signal in the switched volume to trigger the release. A dynamic model is developed of three unique soft switch circuits and two control circuits that create a virtually variable displacement pump. The model is used to perform a grid search optimization of the soft switch parameters for the three circuits. The three soft switch circuits reduce the throttling and compressibility energy losses between 49% and 66% compared with the control circuit. The simulation results demonstrated that the soft switch circuits perform as expected for duty cycles and pressures below the design conditions. At higher duty cycles and pressures, the short time the circuit is connected to tank prevented the soft switches from resetting between cycles, preventing proper function. This novel lock and release soft switch mechanism enables soft switching in switch-mode hydraulic circuits, which significantly reduces throttling and compressibility energy losses during valve transitions. Abstract: Hydraulic accumulators are used in a variety of applications to minimize the pressure variation in hydraulic circuits and to store energy. Conventional hydraulic accumulators suffer from two major limitations, the hydraulic system pressure varies with the quantity of energy stored and the energy density is significantly lower than other energy domains. In this paper, a novel hydraulic accumulator is presented that uses a piston with an area that varies with stroke to maintain a constant hydraulic system pressure while the gas pressure changes. The variable area piston is sealed with a fabric reinforced rolling diaphragm. In this work, the piston radius profile is developed as a function of the piston displacement and then transformed into a function of the axial contact location between the piston and the diaphragm. The piston profile was solved numerically for a variety of conditions using both transformation methods to illustrate the geometric design trade-offs. Using a variable area gas piston with a fixed cylinder area, the maximum gas volume ratio was 1.8:1. An analysis of the energy density revealed that the constant pressure accumulator provides a 16% improvement in energy density over a conventional accumulator at a volume ratio of 2.71:1 and also exceeds the maximum energy density of a conventional accumulator at the lower volume ratio of 1.8:1. This new promising technology maintains a constant hydraulic system pressure independent of the quantity of energy stored, easing system control and allowing other circuit components to be downsized to meet the same power requirements, while also increases the energy storage density. Fluid compressibility has a major influence on the efficiency of switch-mode hydraulic circuits due to the release of energy stored in fluid compression during each switching cycle and the increased flow rate through the high-speed valve during transition events. Multiple models existing in the literature for fluid bulk modulus, the inverse of the com-pressibility, are reviewed and compared with regards to their applicability to a switch-mode circuit. In this work, a computational model is constructed of the primary energy losses in a generic switch-mode hydraulic circuit with emphasis on losses created by fluid compressibility. The model is used in a computational experiment where the system pres-sure, switched volume, and fraction of air entrained in the hydraulic fluid are varied through multiple levels. The computational experiments resulted in switch-mode circuit volumetric efficiencies that ranged from 51% to 95%. The dominant energy loss is due to throttling through the ports of the high-speed valve during valve transition events. The throttling losses increase with the fraction of entrained air and the volume of fluid experi-encing pressure fluctuations, with a smaller overall influence seen as a result of the sys-tem pressure. The results of the computational experiment indicate that to achieve high efficiency in switch-mode hydraulic circuits, it is critical to minimize both the entrained air in the hydraulic fluid and the fluid volume beh\'een the high-speed valve and the pump, motor, or actuator. Abstract: Conventional mobile hydraulic power supplies involve numerous kinematic connections and are limited by the efficiency, noise, and emissions of internal combustion engines. The Stirling cycle possesses numerous benefits such as the ability to operate from any heat source, quiet operation, and high theoretical efficiency. The Stirling engine has seen limited success due to poor heat transfer in the working chambers, difficulty sealing low-molecular weight gases at high pressure, and non-ideal piston displacement profiles. As a solution to these limitations, a liquid piston Stirling engine pump is proposed. The liquid pistons conform to irregular volumes, allowing increased heat transfer through geometry features on the interior of the working chambers. Creating near-isothermal operation eliminates the costly external heat exchangers and increases the engine efficiency through decreasing the engine dead space. The liquid pistons provide a positive gas seal and thermal transport to the working chambers. Controlling the flow of the liquid pistons with valves enables matching the ideal Stirling cycle and creates a direct hydraulic power supply. Using liquid hydrogen as a fuel source allows cooling the compression side of the engine before expanded the fuel into a gas and combusting it to heat the expansion side of the engine. Cooling the compression side not only increases the engine power, but also significantly increases the potential thermal efficiency of the engine. A high efficiency Stirling engine makes energy regeneration through reversing the Stirling cycle practical. When used for regeneration, the captured energy can be stored in thermal batteries, such as a molten salt. The liquid piston Stirling engine pump requires further research in numerous areas such as understanding the behavior of the liquid pistons, modeling and optimization of a full engine pump, and careful selection of materials for the extreme operating temperatures. Abstract: A liquid piston concept is proposed to improve the efficiency of gas compression and expansion. Because a liquid can conform to an irregular chamber volume, the surface area to volume ratio in the gas chamber can be maximized using a liquid piston. This creates near-isothermal operation, which minimizes energy lost to heat generation. A liquid piston eliminates gas leakage and replaces sliding seal friction with viscous friction. The liquid can also be used as a medium to carry heat into and out of the compression chamber. A simulation is presented of the heat transfer and frictional forces for a reciprocating piston and a liquid piston. In the application of an air compressor, with a pressure ratio of 9.5:1 and a cycle frequency of 20Hz, the liquid piston decreased the energy consumption by 19% over the reciprocating piston. The liquid piston and the reciprocating piston exhibited a total efficiency of 83% and 70% respectively. The liquid piston demonstrated significant improvements in the total compression efficiency in comparison to a conventional reciprocating piston. This gain in efficiency was accomplished through increasing the heat transfer during the gas compression by increasing the surface area to volume ratio in the compression chamber. Gaps at part interfaces pose a major challenge for laser transmission welding (LTW) of thermoplastics due to the reliance on contact conduction between the absorptive and transmissive parts. In industrial applications, gaps between parts can occur for a variety of tolerance and process control reasons. Previous experimental and modeling work in LTW has focused on gap-free joints, with little attention to bridging a gap with thermal expansion of the absorbing material. A two-dimensional comprehensive numerical model simulated bridging gaps in LTW. Using the model, operating parameters were selected for welding across a 12.7 μm gap and a 25.4 μm gap by creating sufficient thermal strain to bridge the gap and form a weld. Using these operating parameters, PVC samples were welded in a T-joint geometry with a designed gap. The quality of the welds was assessed visually, by destructive force testing and by measuring the weld size to quantify the weld strength. All the experimental samples, for the two gap sizes, bridged the gap and formed welds. The average weld strength of the 12.7 μm gap samples was 16.1 MPa, while the 25.4 μm gap samples had an average strength of 10.0 MPa Gaps were successfully bridged with LTW by using a two-dimensional model to design the operating parameters. Two laser transmission welding experiments involving polyvinyl chloride are presented that aim to validate a previously presented welding model while helping to further understand the relationship between welding parameters and weld quality. While numerous previous research papers have presented the results of laser welding experiments, there exists minimal work validating models of the welding process. The first experiment explores the interaction of laser power and welding velocity while the second experiment explores the influence of clamping pressure. Using the weld width as the primary model output, the agreement between the welding experiments and the model have an average error of 5.6%. This finding strongly supports the validity of the model presented in Part I of this two paper set (Van de Ven and Erdman, 2007, ASME J. Manuf. Sci. Eng., 129, pp. 849-858). Additional information was gained regarding the operating window for laser transmission welding and the thermal decomposition of polyvinyl chloride. This paper discusses the development of a model of laser transmission welding that can be used as an analytical design tool. Currently the majority of laser transmission welding (LTW) applications rely on trial and error to develop appropriate process parameters. A more rigorous design approach is not commonly used primarily due to the complexity of laser welding, where small material or process parameter changes can greatly affect the weld quality. The model developed in this paper also enables optimizing operating parameters while providing monetary and time saving benefits. The model is created from first principles of heat transfer and utilizes contact conduction that is a function of temperature and pressure, Gaussian laser distribution, and many material properties that vary with temperature including the absorption coefficient. The model is demonstrated through a design example of a joint between two polyvinyl chloride parts. The model is then validated with samples welded with a diode laser system using the operating parameters developed in a design example. A challenge in realizing switch-mode hydraulic circuits is the need for a high-speed valve with fast transition time and high switching frequency. The work presented includes the design and modeling of a suitable valve and experimental demonstration of the prototype in a hydraulic boost converter. The design consists of two spools driven by crank-sliders, designed for 120 Hz maximum switching frequency at a flow rate of 22.7 lpm. The fully open throttling loss is designed for <2% of the rated pressure of 34.5 MPa. The transition time is less than 5% (0.42 ms at 120 Hz) of the total cycle and the duty cycle is adjustable from 0 to 1. Leakage and viscous friction losses in the design are less than 2% of the rated hydraulic energy per cycle. The experimental results agreed well with the model resulting in a 3% variation in transition time. Transmission angle control is well studied for both crank rocker and Grashof crank slider mechanisms. However, non-Grashof slider-crank mechanisms have received less attention. For these mechanisms, the fully rotatable crank constraint is removed increasing the complexity of the problem. Furthermore, methods of linkage synthesis by optimization are becoming more prevalent. When optimizing a mechanism, it is important to prevent the evaluation of non-constructible and undesirable linkages. Presented here is a method of solution rectification by means of transmission angle control for slider-crank mechanisms which can be used to parameterize a problem to prevent the evaluation of invalid linkages. The solution is kept general to include fully rotatable crank slider mechanisms as well. The solution considers both crank driven and slider driven mechanisms as well as a reversible driver mechanism. An example is provided to demonstrate the method. It will be shown that by defining a transmission angle, valid linkages can be generated preventing the evaluation of invalid solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydraulic applications requiring a variation in the speed or torque of actuators have historically used throttling valve control or a variable displacement pump or motor. An alternative method is switch-mode control that uses a high-speed valve to rapidly switch between efficient on and off states, allowing any hydraulic actuator to have virtually variable displacement. An existing barrier to switch-mode control is a fast and efficient high-speed valve. A novel high-speed valve concept is proposed that uses a phase shift between two tiers of continuously rotating valve spools to achieve a pulse-width modulated flow with any desired duty ratio. An analysis of the major forms of energy loss, including throttling, compressibility, viscous friction, and internal leakage, is performed on a disk spool architecture. This analysis also explores the use of a hydrodynamic thrust bearing to maintain valve clearance. A nonoptimized design example of a phase-shift valve operating at 100 Hz switching frequency at 10 l/min demonstrates an efficiency of 73% at a duty ratio of 1 and 64% at 0.75 duty ratio. Numerous opportunities exist for improving this efficiency including design changes and formal optimization. The phase-shift valve has the potential to enable switch-mode hydraulic circuits. A novel method of continuous microbubble generation is proposed in which an air–water mixture is pressurized in a chamber (up to 47 a t m), leading to complete gas dissolution, before being expelled through a restriction to induce bubble nucleation. This approach differs from existing methods for small-scale bubble generation due to the high pressure gas–liquid mixture, nucleation approach, and large gas concentrations, which range from saturation ratios of 2.85 to 9.56 at normal temperature and pressure. The flow of bubbles produced by the system is characterized through optical microscopy to determine the influence of various operating parameters on the volumetric bubble size distributions (VBSDs) at a fixed flow rate. In particular, the gas concentration, compressor pressure, restriction diameter, and restriction length are varied for two classes of restrictions: capillaries with large length-to-diameter ratios, and orifices with comparatively low ratios. VBSDs are modestly polydisperse under all conditions, but with tunable distributions in the 10–70 μ m diameter range. The VBSDs for each configuration collapse when non-dimensionalized by the Sauter mean diameter, which provides an opportunity to describe bubble size distributions using a predictor model for this reduced order quantity. The coefficients from the predictor model reveal a low sensitivity of the Sauter mean diameter to the gas concentration and a reduction of bubble diameters when the residence time of solution in the restriction is decreased. Analysis of the technique of bubble generation yields an energy balance to quantify the relative energy ratio of the bubble generation process, which is presently less than 0.2%. Insight from the energy balance suggests that the process could be optimized to generate smaller bubbles. This paper presents a comparison between the forward and inverse cam generation methods applied to the design of a multi-lobed cam-rocker slider mechanism for function generation. In the forward method, the cam profile is specified directly and then the linkage output is determined using kinematics. In the inverse method, the trajectory of the output link is specified first and then the cam profile is determined using inverse linkage kinematics. First, the cam-linkage mechanism is introduced, and relevant kinematic equations are presented. Then, the cam generation methods are thoroughly explained. The two cam generation methods are applied to a case study of a hydraulic motor using a multi-lobed cam and multiple linkage mechanisms. While the forward method has direct control of the cam shape, the inverse method has direct control of the linkage output and offers an advantage in calculation speed. For the mechanism selected, the cam designed with the inverse method achieved a reduction of at least 50.97% in the torque ripple when compared to the cam designed with the forward method. A high pressure, efficient and power dense air compressor/expander is a critical element in an isothermal compressed air energy storage (ICAES) system. Heat transfer is often the limiting factor in realizing efficient and power dense compression and expansion processes. Liquid piston compressor/expanders with porous media inserts have been proposed, in which the porous media serves as heat exchangers. While this concept has been studied through modeling and simulation, it has only been validated experimentally at low pressures (10 bar). This paper studies experimentally the effect of porous media in a high pressure (7–210 bar) liquid piston air compressor/expander, which is the proposed pressure for the ICAES system. Cases with the porous media uniformly distributed and non-uniformly distributed in the chamber are studied with various compression and expansion rates. Results show that at 93% efficiency, the uniformly distributed 2.5 mm interrupted plate porous medium increases power density by 10 times in compression and 20 times in expansion; or at the same power, efficiency is increased by 13% in compression and 23% in expansion. Moreover, the porous medium, if deployed at the top of the chamber, is shown to be more effective than if deployed at the bottom. The results indicate that the added surface area provides the dominant benefits but the porous media also increase the heat transfer coefficient at the same efficiency regime. The efficiency and power density of gas compression and expansion are strongly dependent on heat transfer during the process. Since porous media inserts can significantly increase heat transfer surface area, their addition to a liquid piston compressor/expander has been hypothesized to reduce the time to complete the compression or expansion process and hence the power density for a given thermodynamic efficiency; or to increase the thermodynamic efficiency at a fixed power density. This paper presents an experimental investigation on heat transfer with porous inserts during compression for a pressure ratio of 10 and during expansion for a pressure ratio of 6. A baseline case without inserts and five cases with different porous inserts are tested in a compression experiment: 3 interrupted ABS inserts with plate spacing of 2.5, 5, and 10 mm and 2 aluminum foam inserts sized with 10 and 40 pores per inch. The 2.5 mm and 5 mm interrupted plate inserts were also tested in expansion experiments. Porous inserts are found, in compression, to increase power-density by 39-fold at 95% efficiency and to increase efficiency by 18% at 100 kW / m 3 power density; in expansion, power density is increased three fold at 89% efficiency, and efficiency is increased by 7% at 150 kW / m 3 . Surface area increase is found to be the predominant cause in the improvement in performance. Thus, a liquid piston compressor/expander together with a porous medium may be used in applications requiring high compression ratios, high efficiencies, and high power density such as in an open-accumulator compressed air energy storage (CAES) system or a compressor for compressed natural gas (CNG). Interrupted-plate heat exchangers are used as regenerators for absorbing and releasing thermal energy such as in a Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system in which the exchanger absorbs energy to cool the air being compressed or liberates energy to heat the air upon expansion. The exchanger consists of layers of thin plates in stacked arrays. In a given layer, the plates are parallel to one another and parallel to the exchanger axis. Each successive layer is rotated to have its plates be perpendicular to those of the layer below but still parallel to the exchanger axis. As flow passes from one layer to the next, new thermal boundary layers develop, beneficial to effective heat transfer. The interrupted-plate heat exchanger can also be seen as a porous medium. As such, it demonstrates strong anisotropic behavior when flow approaches the plates in a direction other than axially. Thus, pressure drops and heat transfer coefficients are dependent upon the attack angle. Mathematical models for anisotropic pressure drop and heat transfer behavior are proposed based on numerical calculations on a Representative Elementary Volume (REV), the unit cell model of the interrupted-plate medium. The anisotropic pressure drop is modeled by the traditionally used Darcy and inertial terms, with the addition of another term representing mixing effects. Heat transfer between the fluid and the plates is formulated in terms of Nusselt number vs. Reynolds number and approach angle of the mean flow. These models are used when solving, on the scale of the heat exchanger application, the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations that treat the exchanger region as a continuum. Efficient high-speed onloff valves are an enabling technology for applying digital control techniques such as pulse-width-modulation (PWM) to hydraulic systems. Virtually vari-able displacement pumps (WDPs) are one application where variable displacement functionality is attained using a fixed-displacement pump paired with an onl off valve and an accumulator. High-speed valves increase system bandwidth and reduce output pres-sure ripple by enabling higher switching frequencies. In addition to fast switching, onl off valves should also have small pressure drop and low actuation power to be effective in these applications. In this paper, a new unidirectional rotary valve designed for PWM is proposed. The valve is unique in utilizing the hydraulic fluid flowing through it as a power source for rotation. An unoptimized prototype capable of high flow rate (40 Ipm), high speed (2.8 ms transition time at 100 Hz PWM frequency), and low pressure drop (0.62 MPa), while consuming little actuation power (<0.5% full power or 30 W, scav-enged from fluid stream), has been constructed and experimentally validated. This paper describes the valve design, analyzes its perfoimance and losses, and develops mathematical models that can be used for design and simulation. The models are validated using experi-mental data from a proof-of-concept prototype. The valve efficiency is quantified and sugges-tions for improving the efficiency in future valves are provided.
