Dried blood spot succinylacetone (SA) is often used as a biomarker for newborn screening (NBS) for tyrosinemia type 1 (TT1). However, false‐positive SA results are often observed. Elevated SA may also be due to maleylacetoacetate isomerase deficiency (MAAI‐D), which appears to be clinically insignificant. This study investigated whether urine organic acid (uOA) and quantitative urine maleic acid (Q‐uMA) analyses can distinguish between TT1 and MAAI‐D. We reevaluated/measured uOA (GC–MS) and/or Q‐uMA (LC–MS/MS) in available urine samples of nine referred newborns (2 TT1, 7 false‐positive), eight genetically confirmed MAAI‐D children, and 66 controls. Maleic acid was elevated in uOA of 5/7 false‐positive newborns and in the three available samples of confirmed MAAI‐D children, but not in TT1 patients. Q‐uMA ranged from not detectable to 1.16 mmol/mol creatinine in controls (n = 66) and from 0.95 to 192.06 mmol/mol creatinine in false‐positive newborns and MAAI‐D children (n = 10). MAAI‐D was genetically confirmed in 4/7 false‐positive newborns, all with elevated Q‐uMA, and rejected in the two newborns with normal Q‐uMA. No sample was available for genetic analysis of the last false‐positive infant with elevated Q‐uMA. Our study shows that MAAI‐D is a recognizable cause of false‐positive TT1 NBS results. Although shame plays a vital role in psychosocial functioning and development, it has also been implicated in several mental health problems, such as depression, suicidal behavior, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Given the potentially debilitating impact of shame on adjustment, an understanding of resilience in the face of this emotion is essential. The purpose of this study was to explore how adults bounce back from significant shame experiences, based on the subjective perspectives of participants. Interviews were conducted with 13 adults who recalled events or situations that elicited intense feelings of shame. Grounded theory was used in the collection and analysis of the data. In the findings, shame is conceptualized as an assault on the self, where the individual's self-concept, social connection, and sense of power and control come under attack. Individuals bounce back from this adversity through a process of self-reconstruction. This process is represented by the core category rebuilding of the self and by 5 interrelated subcategories, including connecting, refocusing, accepting, understanding, and resisting. Implications for counseling and directions for further research are discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)

Given the serious challenges faced by female survivors of sexual assault, an understanding of how they heal after such an experience is vital. Yet little is known about how being in nature may be helpful in this regard. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop an in-depth understanding of how nature helps women heal from sexual assault. A narrative analysis of semi-structured interview data provided by four female sexual assault survivors generated four main themes. These themes point to how nature served as a source of emotion regulation and spiritual connection, as well as how it facilitated greater acceptance and reduced dissociation. Themes also indicated reduced negative thinking and rumination, and increased attention to the here and now. Findings are contextualized within the existing literature on sexual assault, and implications for counselling and psychotherapeutic practice with survivors are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to obtain an in‐depth understanding of supervisees' in‐the‐moment nondisclosure experiences, perceptions and internal processes as they occurred in clinical supervision involving videorecording review. The supervisees who participated in the study were students in their first year of a master's‐level counselling practicum in Western Canada. Utilising interpersonal process recall (IPR) interview methods, supervisees were asked to share their moment‐by‐moment nondisclosures that occurred during a recent videorecorded supervision session in which the supervisory dyad reviewed a videorecording of the supervisee's clinical work. Thematic analysis across cases yielded five overarching themes: (a) validation; (b) safety; (c) growth and accomplishment; (d) performance anxiety; and (e) avoidance. The findings revealed a broad range of positive and negative supervisee nondisclosures that were influenced by the supervision modality of videorecording review and the IPR interview. Implications for clinical supervision, limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although recent research has pointed to the potential benefits of self-compassion for youth, relatively little is known about the perspectives and lived experience of adolescents as they extend compassion toward themselves. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain an in-depth understanding of self-compassion from the adolescent perspective. Six adolescents, who had experienced a variety of life difficulties, were interviewed about their experiences of self-compassion in the context of their daily lives. Data were analyzed for common themes using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The resulting themes included putting oneself at the center, maintaining a positive outlook, engaging in pleasurable activities, connecting positively with others, working on self-improvement, making oneself attractive to others, accepting oneself, and experiencing emotional balance. Findings from this study add to self-compassion research by bringing attention to the contextualized meaning and experiences of self-compassion from the adolescent perspective. Background: Mental illness is among the most common causes of morbidity, mortality, and disability in childhood. Mindfulness‐based stress reduction (MBSR) has shown significant benefit in mental health; however, evidence of its effectiveness in youth is limited. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of MBSR plus usual care versus usual care alone for reducing mental health symptoms in youth. Methods: A two‐arm, mixed methods, randomized cluster‐controlled trial of 12–18 year olds who were residents of CASA House, a voluntary residential treatment program for adolescents, between January 2011 and March 2013 (clinicaltrials.gov, NCT01307943). Interventions: Treatment terms were randomized to usual care, or MBSR plus usual care, which included eight MBSR sessions of 2 hr/week. Outcomes: The primary outcome was impact on emotions and behavior at the end of the program, using the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC‐2). Secondary outcomes included perceived stress levels, mindfulness, and emotional regulation. Results: A total of 85 participants were randomized to either the MBSR arm (n = 45) or control arm (n = 40). Significant differences in favor of MBSR were found on Teacher ratings of the Internalizing Problems (p = .038) and Adaptive Skills subscales (p = .022) on the BASC‐2. No significant differences were found on other outcomes. A post hoc analysis found that the MBSR arm had a significantly shorter time to discharge (p = .02). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that MBSR is effective for improved coping with internalizing problems and adaptive emotional skills in our sample.
