Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory condition based on both dyslipidemia and inflammation. Therefore, even when dyslipidemia is controlled, the risk of atherosclerosis remains. Among the most efficient inflammatory mediators used as therapeutic tools in cardiovascular disease are the interleukins, which are pro-inflammatory mediators like cytokines. Moreover, a protein kinase inhibitors, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor, and an inhibitor of a leukocyte adhesion molecule, P-Selectin, have also presented therapeutic potential for this disorder. Colchicine, being an inexpensive therapeutic option, has been proved to be suitable for the prevention of atherosclerosis. In this review, we summarize all the studies, from 2010 to 2020, in which treatment approaches based on the agents mentioned above are evaluated in the management of atherosclerosis.Keywords: cytokines, interleukins, losmapimod, colchicine, p-selectin, inclacumab

Cushing's syndrome (CS) causes hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anovulatory infertility due to hypercortisolism, and it is very rare in pregnancy. CS in pregnancy is associated with important maternal-foetal morbidity and mortality, such as preeclampsia and premature delivery. A systematic search was conducted in the MEDLINE library to retrieve articles reporting cases of CS in pregnant women, during the period between 2010 and 2020. Thirty-five reported cases are presented focusing on the ability of diagnosis, treatment therapies, and foetal outcomes. Diagnosis of CS during pregnancy can be challenging and is often delayed, adrenal adenoma being the predominant cause. Both medical treatment and surgery aiming at restoring the cortisol balance reduce maternal and foetal complications.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer (BC) and accounts for 10-20% of cases. Due to the lack of expression of several receptors, hormone therapy is largely ineffective for treatment purposes. Nevertheless, TNBC often responds very well to chemotherapy, which constitutes the most often recommended treatment. New beneficial targeted therapies are important to be investigated in order to achieve enhanced outcomes in patients with TNBC. This review will focus on recent therapeutic innovations for TNBC, focusing on various inhibitors such as phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway inhibitors, poly-ADP-ribosyl polymerase (PARP) inhibitors, aurora kinase inhibitors, histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs), and immune checkpoint inhibitors.

The flossing method is an emerging therapeutic intervention based on the use of a floss-band that is circumnavigated at the various points of the body being treated. It is optimally combined with an appropriate exercise program to induce ischemia and release the fascia by applying pressure and movement to functional models. The Pilates method teaches the person to focus on the muscles, especially those responsible for the correct posture. It also helps the individual to become aware of the way he/she breathes. Both methods have positive effects on exercise and rehabilitation. However, medical flossing has not been as well researched as the Pilates method. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of both methods on the strength, endurance, and functionality of healthy individuals. A review of the literature on medical flossing and Pilates was conducted. A systematic research took place from 2014 to 2019. Publications in non-English or non-Greek language were excluded. The articles were retrieved from not only PubMed, Scielo, and Elsevier databases, but also Google Scholar. Both methods are understudied in relation to their effectiveness on the strength, endurance, and functionality of healthy individuals. More studies are required to estimate the effects of both methods on healthy individuals.

Η Φωτοκατάλυση αποτελεί έναν ταχέως αναπτυσσόμενο τομέα κατάλυσης. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, εντείνονται οι προσπάθειες για χρήση ήπιων, οικολογικότερων μεθόδων αλλά και για τη χρήση φωτός σε φωτοκαταλυτικές αντιδράσεις, με σκοπό την ανάδειξη της Πράσινης Χημείας. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο της παρούσας διατριβής γίνεται μια εισαγωγή στη Φωτοχημεία. Στη δεύτερο κεφάλαιο γίνεται βιβλιογραφική αναφορά στην αντίδραση ριζικής προσθήκης σε ολεφίνες, χρησιμοποιώντας το βρωμοτριχλωρομεθάνιο και το βρωμοακετονιτρίλιο ως πηγή της αλκυλο-ομάδας. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται το βιβλιογραφικό υπόβαθρο της αντίδρασης ενεργοποίησης ενός δεσμού C-H, σε μια σειρά αντιδράσεων, μεταξύ των οποίων είναι η φωτοχημική αντίδραση αλδεϋδών με ενεργοποιημένα και μη αλκένια και οι φωτοχημικές αντιδράσεις ετεροκυκλικών ενώσεων με ενεργοποιημένα αλκένια, σουλφόνυλο εστέρες, αλλά και με αντιδραστήρια υπερσθενούς ιωδίου. Σκοπό της παρούσας διατριβής (τέταρτο κεφάλαιο) αποτέλεσε η ανάπτυξη ενός φωτοκαταλυτικών πρωτοκόλλων για τη σύνθεση βρωμοπαραγώγων από την προσθήκη βρωμοτριχλωρομεθανίου και βρωμοακετονιτριλίου σε ολεφίνες, η μελέτη της υδροακυλίωσης ενεργοποιημένων ολεφινών και η ανάπτυξη ενός φωτοκαταλυτικού πρωτοκόλλου για την υδροακυλίωση μη ενεργοποιημένων ολεφινών. Επιπλέον, σκοπό της παρούσας διατριβής αποτέλεσε η μελέτη αλκυλίωσης, αλκενυλίωσης και αλκυνυλίωσης ετεροκυκλικών ενώσεων. Στο πέμπτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται λεπτομερώς η ανάπτυξη της φιλικής προς το περιβάλλον μεθόδου για την προσθήκη βρωμοτριχλωρομεθανίου σε ολεφίνες, χρησιμοποιώντας το φαινυλογλυοξυλικό οξύ ως φωτοεκκινητή της αντίδρασης. Στο έκτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται η εκτενής μελέτη για την προσθήκη βρωμοακετονιτριλίου σε ολεφίνες, χρησιμοποιώντας έναν φωτοκαταλύτη ιριδίου. Στο έβδομο κεφάλαιο περιγράφεται η μελέτη της αντίδρασης προσθήκης βρωμοακετονιτριλίου σε αλκένια, χρησιμοποιώντας έναν φωτοκαταλύτη ρουθηνίου. Στο όγδοο κεφάλαιο περιγράφεται η μηχανιστική μελέτη ακυλίωσης άζω δικαρβοξυλικών εστέρων, παρουσία νιφάδων γραφίτη. Στο ένατο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται η μηχανιστική μελέτη της αντίδρασης υδροακυλίωσης ηλεκτρονιακά φτωχών ολεφινών από αλδεΰδες, παρουσία του φαινυλογλυοξυλικού οξέος, και η εφαρμογή μιας σειράς υποστρωμάτων στην αντίδραση. Στο δέκατο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται λεπτομερώς η ανάπτυξη ενός φιλικού προς το περιβάλλον πρωτοκόλλου για την υδροακυλίωση ηλετρονιακά πλούσιων ολεφινών από αλδεΰδες, χρησιμοποιώντας το φαινυλογλυοξυλικό οξύ ως φωτοεκκινητή. Στο ενδέκατο κεφάλαιο περιγράφεται η μηχανιστική μελέτη της αντίδρασης αλκυλίωσης ετεροκυκλικών ενώσεων από ενεργοποιημένα αλκένια, παρουσία του φαινυλογλυοξυλικού οξέος και η εφαρμογή της μεθόδου σε μια σειρά υποστρωμάτων. Στο δωδέκατο κεφάλαιο περιγράφεται η μηχανιστική μελέτη της αντίδρασης αλκενυλίωσης ετεροκυκλικών ενώσεων από σουλφόνυλο εστέρες, παρουσία του φαινυλογλυοξυλικού οξέος και η σύνθεση και εφαρμογή μια σειράς υποστρωμάτων στην αντίδραση. Στο δέκατο τρίτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται εκτενώς η ανάπτυξη μιας φιλικής προς το περιβάλλον μεθόδου για την αλκυνυλίωση αιθερικών παραγώγων από αντιδραστήρια υπερσθενούς ιωδίου, χρησιμοποιώντας το φαινυλογλυοξυλικό οξύ ως φωτοεκκινητή, αλλά και η σύνθεση και η εφαρμογή μιας σειράς αντιδραστηρίων υπερσθενούς ιωδίου στην αντίδραση. Στο δέκατο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται λεπτομερώς η ανάπτυξη ενός πρωτοκόλλου για την σύνθεση αλκυνυλιωμένων παραγώγων από κυκλικά και μη σουλφίδια και αντιδραστήρια υπερσθενούς ιωδίου, παρουσία του φαινυλογλυοξυλικού οξέος ως φωτοεκκινητή. Στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο της διατριβής παρουσιάζονται όλες οι πειραματικές πορείες που ακολουθήθηκαν και ο χαρακτηρισμός όλων των ενώσεων που απομονώθηκαν. Photocatalysis constitutes a rapidly expanding sector. In recent years, more efforts are focusing οn the case of mild, environmentally safe methods and light in organic reactions, as a mean to emphasize its turn to Green Chemistry. In the first chapter of this thesis, Photochemistry is introduced. The second chapter refers to a literature report on radical addition on olefins, using bromotrichloromethane and/or bromoacetonitrile as the alkyl source. In the third chapter, the literature background on radical addition of aldehydes into electron deficient and electron rich alkenes, via C-H activation, is provided. The literature background on the reaction between heterocycles and electron deficient olefins, sulfonyl esters and hypervalent iodine reagents is also given. The aim of the present thesis (fourth chapter) was the development of a photocatalytic protocol for the radical addition of bromotrichloromethane and bromoacetonitrile on olefins, leading to bromoderivatives. The study of the hydroacylation of electron deficient alkenes and the development of a photocatalytic method for the hydroacylation of electron rich alkenes was also described. Moreover, the aim of the present thesis was the study of the alkylation, alkenylation and alkynylation of heterocycles. In the fifth chapter, we discuss thoroughly the development of an eco-friendly protocol for the radical addition of bromotrichloromethane on olefins, using phenylxlyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator. In the sixth chapter, the extensive research upon the radical addition of bromoacetonitrile on olefins, using an iridium-based photocatalyst, is described. In the seventh chapter, the radical addition of bromoacetonitrile on olefins, using a ruthenium-based photocatalyst, is presented. In the eighth chapter, the mechanistic study of the hydroacylation of dialkyl azodicarboxylates catalyzed by graphite flakes is presented. In the ninth chapter, the mechanistic study of the hydroacylation of electron deficient alkenes, using phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator is described. A number of substrates was also tested under the optimized reaction conditions. In the tenth chapter, the development of an eco-friendly protocol for the hydroacylation of electron rich alkenes, using phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator, is described. In the eleventh chapter, the mechanistic study of the alkylation of heterocycles by electron deficient alkenes, using phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator, is described. Numerous substrates were also tested in the reaction conditions. In the twelfth chapter, the mechanistic study of the alkenylation of heterocycles by sulfonyl esters, using phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator is described. A variety of substrates were synthesized and tested under the optimized reaction conditions. In the thirteenth chapter, the development of an eco-friendly protocol for the alkynylation of ether derivatives by hypervalent iodine reagents, using phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator, is described. A range of hypervalent iodine reagents was synthesized and tested in the reaction conditions. In the fourteenth chapter, the alkynylation of cyclic and non-cyclic sulfides by hypervalent iodine reagents, using phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator, is described. In the last chapter, the experimental procedures are provided.

The development of novel methodologies for the functionalization of saturated heterocycles is highly desirable. Herein, we report a cheap and efficient photochemical method for the C-H functionalization of saturated O-heterocycles, as well as the deconstructive ring-cleavage of S-heterocycles, employing hypervalent iodine alkynylation reagents (ethynylbenziodoxolones, EBX). This photochemical alkynylation is performed utilizing phenylglyoxylic acid as the photoinitiator, leading to the corresponding products in good to high yields, under household fluorescent light bulb irradiation. When O-heterocycles were employed, the expected alpha-C-H alkynylation took place. In contrast, oxidative ring-opening to form a thioalkyne and an aldehyde was observed with S-heterocycles. Preliminary mechanistic experiments are presented to give first insights into this puzzling divergent reactivity.
