9. Simulation guided design of the MRcollar: a MR compatible applicator for deep heating in the head and neck region

Abstract

Purpose: To develop a head and neck hyperthermia phased array system compatible with a 1.5 T magnetic resonance (MR) scanner for noninvasive thermometry. Methods: We designed a dielectric-parabolic-reflector antenna (DiPRA) based on a printed reflector backed dipole antenna and studied its predicted and measured performance in a flat configuration (30 mm thick water bolus and muscle equivalent layer). Thereafter, we designed a phased array applicator model (‘MRcollar’) consisting of 12 DiPRA modules placed on a radius of 180 mm. Theoretical heating performance of the MRcollar model was benchmarked against the current clinical applicator (HYPERcollar3D) using specific (3D) head and neck models of 28 treated patients. Lastly, we assessed the influence of the DiPRA modules on MR scanning quality. Results: The predicted and measured reflection coefficients (S 11) of the DiPRA module are below −20 dB. The maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) in the area under the antenna was 47% higher than for the antenna without encasing. Compared to the HYPERcollar3D, the MRcollar design incorporates 31% less demineralized water (−2.5 L), improves the predicted TC25 (target volume enclosed by 25% iso-SAR contour) by 4.1% and TC50 by 8.5%, while the target-to-hotspot quotient (THQ) is minimally affected (−1.6%). MR experiments showed that the DiPRA modules do not affect MR transmit/receive performance. Conclusion: Our results suggest that head and neck hyperthermia delivery quality with the MRcollar can be maintained, while facilitating simultaneous noninvasive MR thermometry for treatment monitoring and control.

Abstract

Recording fetal magnetoencephalographic (fMEG) signals in-utero is a demanding task due to biological interference, especially maternal and fetal magnetocardiographic (MCG) signals. A method based on orthogonal projection of MCG signal space vectors (OP) was evaluated and compared with independent component analysis (ICA). The evaluation was based on MCG amplitude reduction and signal-to-noise ratio of fetal brain signals using exemplary datasets recorded during ongoing studies related to auditory evoked fields. The results indicate that the OP method is the preferable approach for attenuation of MCG and for preserving the fetal brain signals in fMEG recordings. Abstract

Synthetic gradiometer systems for magnetoencephalography (MEG) were introduced in 1992 and have evolved from 64-channel to 151-channel, adjustable orientation models which are suitable for MEG measurements on subjects that are in seated, reclining or supine positions. A brief review of the basic principles of synthetic gradiometers including typical system properties and the results of the noise cancellation operation at different sites is presented. Examples of MEG measurements are also discussed.

Abstract

The European Red List is a review of the status of European species according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level — in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This publication is a summary of the conservation status of the European species of mosses, liverworts and hornworts, collectively known as bryophytes. It provides the first comprehensive, region-wide assessment of bryophytes and it identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at a European level, so that appropriate policy measures and conservation actions, based on the best available evidence, can be taken to improve their status. The geographical scope is continentwide, extending from Iceland in the west to the Urals in the east, and from Franz Josef Land in the north to the Canary Islands in the south. The Caucasus region is not included.

Noise performance of three types of high-transition-temperature direct current superconducting quantum interference device (DC SQUID) magnetometers fabricated from YBCO and STO films and operating at or near 77 K is investigated. Results indicate low frequency energy sensitivities in uncoupled SQUIDs and excess low-frequency noise in flip-chip coupled magnetometers.

Abstract

The noise characteristics of three whole-vortex 64 channel magnetoencephalography systems equipped with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are studied in both unshielded and shielded environments. Results show that the the SQUIDs act as spatial filters to allow optimum electromagnetic noise cancellation or reduction in unshielded and shielded conditions.

Abstract

A whole cortex, 64 channel superconducting quantum interference device biomagnetometer system for detecting biomagnetic signals over large areas of the brain cortex is presented. The system does not rely on magnetic shielding commonly used in conventional biomagnetic systems for noise suppression. It performs noise elimination by spatial filtering using higher order gradiometers implemented in the system software and firmware. Preliminary magnetoencephalographic measurements verify the viability of the new system.

Abstract

This paper introduces an online centered normalized least mean squares (OC-NLMS) algorithm for linear adaptive finite impulse response (FIR) filters and neural networks. As an extension of the normalized least mean squares (NLMS), the OC-NLMS algorithm features an approach of online input centering according to the introduced filter memory. This key feature can compensate the effect of concept drift in data streams, because such a centering makes the filter independent from the nonzero mean value of signal. This approach is beneficial for applications of adaptive filtering of data with offsets. Furthermore, it can be useful for real-time applications like data stream processing where it is impossible to normalize the measured data with respect to its unknown statistical attributes. The OC-NLMS approach holds superior performance in comparison to the NLMS for data with large offsets and dynamical ranges, due to its input centering feature that deals with the nonzero mean value of the input data. In this paper, the derivation of this algorithm is presented. Several simulation results with artificial and real data are also presented and analysed to demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm in comparison with NLMS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this article, a known concept and measurement probe geometry for the estimation of the dielectric properties of oils have been adapted. The new probe enables the~measurement in the frequency range of 1 to 3000 MHz. Additionally, the measurement probe has been equipped with a~heat exchanger, which has enabled us to measure the dielectric properties of sunflower and olive oil as well as of two commercial emulsion concentrates. Subsequently, corresponding linear empirical temperature and frequency dependent models of the dielectric properties of the above mentioned oils and concentrates have been created. The dielectric properties measured here as well as the values obtained based on the empirical models created here match the data published in professional literature very well.

Abstract

The doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG ) is a key constituent of energy conversion plants. The control of a DFIG is a challenge, whenever the primary energy supply (e.g., the wind velocity field) is characterised by intermittency. The mathematical model and control of a DFIG rely on the Blondel-Park transformation, which is known to simplify the governing equations. The distinctive feature of this contribution consists of showing how the Blondel-Park transformation derives from a set of conditions to be met by a group. Such a group is shown to exist and to continuously depend on one parameter. The uniqueness of its infinitesimal generator is also shown. As an application, the well-known electric torque theorem is proved in a simple way, which relies on a “product of matrices” formula. The latter, in turn, is a by-product of the axiomatic deduction of the Blondel-Park transformation.

Abstract

Inverse problems aimed at locating cracks and voids inside a dielectric medium by means of electromagnetic waves involve knowledge of transmission eigenvalues. The subject has been actively investigated by many Authors for some years and results have been presented in articles and books. Unfortunately, the frequency dependence of dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability of the material has not been taken into account. A theorem which provides existence and asymptotic properties of real transmission eigenvalues is shown to be physically inconsistent, because it ignores the Kramers-Kronig relations.
